notes Shannon Slattery is an artist and teacher. She was born and bred in Newton, is a member of the Newton Art Association, and has been teaching art at Newton North High School for the last 20 years. We’re delighted to share this painting with you; below are her words about it: “I have spent the last year or so painting the trees. I am drawn to the rhythm of the trunks and the rugged terrain around my summer home in Maine. I walk every day when I am there, and the route I take brings me up and down hills and through woods. Maine is famous for its craggy coast, and the ground is often uneven with granite ledge poking through the moss. Many of the trees cling to the surface, especially the white pines, which grow so straight and carpet the ground with their needles. I see them as struggling to hold on, and they represent to me the connection to the earth and nature that is essential. Other times a grouping of trees, perhaps all having sprung from a single parent, huddle or march together in rows, creating a kind of visual music. As a painter, I am guided by process; I apply paint by any and all means and will just as often wipe, sand, or scrape the board as paint with a brush. At the intersection of drawing and painting—color, line, and texture are the means to describe what I see and how I connect to my environment.”

fall 2018 meet our new director KAREN O’NEILL I am thrilled to welcome you to our fall catalog and introduce myself as the new Director of NCE. It is my honor to serve you, and I thank former Director Ed Hauben for his leadership and stewardship. I come to my role via an unorthodox career path—from engineering to afterschool program management to nonprofit leadership. But my journey is what makes me ready and eager to lead NCE. It started with a simple sentence: “I don’t know.” Those words filled me with dread as a kid. I was a stellar student, but my learning motivation was to get good grades, a degree, and a stable job. Ignorance was weakness. After graduation, I enrolled in an American Sign Language class at the local continuing education center, hoping to connect with people in my new city. There I experienced both the joy of learning simply because I wanted to know more, and the power of sharing the experience with my community. I was hooked. Since then, each class I’ve taken has connected me not only to others, but to a part of myself I didn’t recognize. I also discovered that I love to teach and help others embrace their own “I don’t know. Let’s learn this together.” It’s become my professional calling. I fervently believe an educated community is an empowered community and that education is a human right that must be safeguarded and nurtured. I commit to NCE, its staff, its commission, and the greater Newton community to not only continue the great work already underway, but also to ensure a sustainable future that meets the growing and evolving needs of our times. If you’re not already planning on joining us, I’ll close with a favorite quote that will hopefully inspire you to embrace your own “I don’t know.” “Curiosity is a willing, a proud, and eager confession of ignorance.” – S. Leonard Rubinstein Come be curious with us! We have an entire community ready to learn alongside you.

(Hungarian cooking classes)

Brian Scagliola (page 21)

Szonja Ruppert (page12) By the time this catalog comes out, I will have been to Budapest and back. I can’t wait to try some authentic Hungarian foods. Our Budapest Foodfest series brings Hungary’s favorite foods to you this fall. Come hungry to one or all, learn about the culture, and enjoy making a rich cuisine that’s more than just goulash.

Story Slam Tell Me a Story Your Legacy Story

Cindy Marshall (pages 15 & 29) I love a good story. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve my grandfather telling me stories about his escape from Russia. The stories were hard to believe, but his enthusiasm kept me mesmerized. If you have a story you’d like to share but can’t because you get tongue tied, get it straight with help from our professional storyteller. Take one or all three classes and you’ll be telling great stories in no time!

Impressionist Composers: Debussy & Ravel

Richard Knisely (page 31) I love when I get to check out music for a class—which brings me to composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. I haven’t stopped listening to their music since Richard Knisely sent me a class description. Listen for yourself (see the course description on our website), and you’ll understand why their sounds are pure magic. There’s no doubt you’ll want to hear more about these two geniuses.

Here are some of our favorite classes this fall and a little insight into why we picked them.

617 559-6999

The Nonantum Boxing Club is a gem, a neighborhood favorite down in “The Lake”. I love the reactions both men and women have going there for our class— they can’t get enough! It’s a terrific workout, yes, but it stretches people beyond typical exercise routines. Brian teaches because he was inspired by the sport— the rigor, precision, and tough workout. Grab a friend and sign up.

Burlesque Dance

Maureen McAnulty (page 19) Learning how to dance with a feather boa and gloves... how can you resist?! I have absolutely zero dance training, but I want to round up a couple of my friends and DO THIS. Maureen breaks down the moves into manageable bits and explains where to focus, how to move, and (most importantly!) how to look like you know what you’re doing.

Yoga

Ben, Barbara, and Diann (page 25) NCE is incredibly lucky to have terrific yoga instructors who inspire their students and know how to make class fun. Our yoga classes have some of our highest “repeat” rates of any classes we offer. Students come back time and time again to learn from Ben Cohen, Barbara Perlo, and— back this Fall (hooray!)—Diann Siegal.

Lisa’s picks Expert Architects & Business Sharks

Right Brain Science (page 49 & 52) Sometimes we hire individual teachers for our Kids classes, and sometimes we work with vendors who write curriculum and bring their own staff. Matt Bowling used to write curriculum for Chyten but he’s on his own now, with Right Brain Science. I love his ideas, and kids do too. But sign your kids up, and they’ll soon know more than you do.

Science Lab

Maire Anne Diamond (page 54) If I’d had Maire Anne as a teacher when I was in kindergarten, my life might have taken a different turn. She makes science so much fun! She’s taught for us for many summers, and kids just want more. So take advantage of this rare opportunity for an after-school class with Maire Anne, and see where she takes you.

Art Through the Ages

Nicole Donson (page 49) This teacher has so many ideas, her course proposals are like a novel! I love the combo of creativity and art history Nicole brings; pictures of her students’ finished projects are a treat too. In this moment in time, you should make art in her class.

Basic Drawing Paola Page, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. A materials list will be emailed.

A284-F18 $199 8 Tuesdays @ Russian School of Math 10am–12pm September 25–November 13

Intro to Classical Drawing Jack Neylan, Instructor Experience art school as it was in the 1800s and learn to draw like the modern masters. We’ll carefully study the human figure as they did, and we’ll focus on drawing proportionally and realistically rendering our subjects. Working with graphite and charcoal, we’ll begin by recreating master drawings and anatomical studies; then we’ll move to drawing from sculptures, and gradually working towards drawing a live model. If you missed out on art school 200 years ago, now’s your chance to make up for lost time. Bring a $5-$10 model fee payable to the instructor. A materials list will be emailed.

See the world in a new light and then draw it. Botanical drawing is the art of careful observation inspired by the natural world around us. We’ll use flowers, leaves, seed pods, and other organic objects as our subject matter. You’ll work on strengthening your powers of observation, and develop drawing skills to render shape, texture, size, and proportion with greater confidence. By the end of class, you’ll have a small portfolio of drawings as fine art or use as a basis for a continued edition of prints. All levels, new and returning students welcome. A materials list will be emailed.

Centered in the boardinghouse of Miss Griswold, the colony attracted many artists from the Tonalist and Impressionist movements. Why can some people’s legs open to nearly a 180 degree split in seated angle pose, and yours won’t even spread to 90 degrees? It’s not all skill and practice—a lot of it has to do with anatomy. Individual variation in bone structure can cause dramatic differences in joint range of motion. Learn to identify tension versus compression and discover how these sensations relate to how your body experiences yoga positions. We’ll discuss how to know when it is appropriate to go deeper into a pose and when it’s time to back off, so you can better understand and honor your natural limits. You’ll be guided through joint range of movement exercises and a sequence of yoga postures to help you feel the anatomical concepts discussed.

Beethoven is widely considered one of the greatest composers who ever lived. Join us for an evening of revelation as long-time classical radio host Richard Knisely guides you into the microcosmic world of this musical master. Learn to hear how these huge creations are made from tiny cells of ideas, cells that grow and transmute, and are inverted to create great pyramids from small stones. With instructor guidance and in-class exercises, you’ll learn to sew traditional block patterns as well as modern simplistic designs. You’ll also get tips on different techniques and styles for blending and matching colors and fabrics of various patterns. I really liked getting expert answers to my questions.

Student Success Stories! Jannie Ho (and Jen Betton) As an illustrator for children’s books for a long time, I’ve been wanting to transition into becoming an author/illustrator. I’ve had a story idea for a very long time, but writing and illustrating can be a lonely endeavor. My critique partner, Jen Betton, had told me about a class at NCE for illustrating children’s books, taught by Pam Levy. We both craved structure and a deadline to give us motivation, plus new sets of eyes for our work. The class was the perfect solution and we signed up together. I brought in my story, Bear and Chicken, to the class. Each week, I was able to receive feedback and fresh perspective to my story. I also learned how to assemble a physical dummy from Pam. It was an important part of my working process. About a year later, I was able to sell Bear and Chicken to Running Press Kids, and it was published last fall. I was also thrilled for Jen who was also able to sell her story, Hedgehog Needs a Hug, which was just published by Penguin this past June. Thank you NCE for being part of my author/illustrator journey. We’re hoping to offer Illustrating Children’s Books during our winter session!

We’ll also discuss other elements of the submission package: the letter of intent, budget, and supplementary materials. You’ll come away with ideas about how to approach funders through grant proposals, what makes a proposal readable and effective, what pitfalls to avoid, and what it takes to be noticed by foundations.

Art Through the Ages Student Success Stories! Connor Huang I first tried fencing around four years ago at Camp Innovations and immediately I was hooked. I continued fencing at Innovations for about two summers, then decided to take it to the next level. So I took a class at Brown Middle School offered by NCE, which started my interest in sabre fencing, the type of fencing I do now. The class also boosted my general enthusiasm for the sport. Now, I am a competitive fencer, and I practice four times a week. I travel around New England and sometimes even farther. This year, I’ve been to seven tournaments, four at the national level. In March, I went to Baltimore for the North American Cup, and in July, I went to the National Championships. I enjoy fencing because there is a lot of strategy involved—it’s like a physical chess match. It’s fast paced and exciting. Thanks to NCE for introducing me to my favorite sport!

Nicole Donson, Instructor Travel back in time and create art inspired by cave paintings, ancient Greece, and the Middle Ages, and learn about Renaissance, Modern, and Pop art. Build and illustrate your own ancient Greek vases with papier maché and paint. Draw medieval castles and design a coat of arms. View Renaissance paintings and learn to draw in one- and two-point perspective. Create pop-art like Lichtenstein and Warhol. Get inspired by famous artists through history as we focus on a period a week, and create art inspired by that time. Grades 1-4.

Start with the germ of an idea for a product and business and take it through the entire entrepreneurial process. Learn about wages, profits, and branding while designing print ads, acting out TV commercials, researching real estate locations, and creating replicas of your storefronts. As the class concludes, you’ll pitch your ideas to a panel of “celebrity” judges. Grades 3-5. See this class on our website for link to view business sharks in action!

Student Success Stories! Lanie McLeod When I was in 7th grade, I took a babysitting class over April break with NCE. The next fall, I started babysitting for families in my neighborhood. I quickly grew to love working with children—how they always have energy, and how individual each child is. So, it only made sense that when searching for my first summer job, I would pick a job at a camp where I could work with children. I saw that NCE was hiring, and so I applied and got the job! I have been assisting with various art camps (such as ceramics), and also with Camp Invention. And I wouldn’t be where I am today without that babysitting course.

General Info & Policies

POLICIES Access Our classes are open to everyone. Let us know if you have any special concerns or need special assistance.

Age Requirements Adult classes are open to students 18 years of age and older. Age requirements for Kids classes are listed per class.

Changes NCE reserves the right to cancel classes that are under-enrolled, and to change times, locations, and instructors when necessary.

Discounts/Scholarships We offer a 15% discount to seniors (age 65+), veterans, and employees of the City of Newton. The discount is available on most of our classes, but only if you register by phone and let us know at the time of registration. ELL, one-session, pairs-rate classes, and other select classes are excluded. Discounts do not apply to materials, food fees, or our Kids classes, and can not be combined. Partial

scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Please call 617-5596999 for more information.

Gift Certificates Gift certificates are available in any amount and can be used for any class we offer.

Parking For Evening Classes Free parking is available in lots at both high schools. There is additional parking on neighborhood streets; please pay attention to all official street signs, as parking laws are enforced.

Permissions We may occasionally post your work to our website or take pictures of students in our classes to use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.

Refunds/Withdrawals You can withdraw up to four days before the start-date of an adult class and seven days before the start-date of a Kids class to receive a refund minus a $10 processing fee, or a credit-on-account minus a $5 fee. The start date is the date printed in our catalog. The $6

registration fee is non-refundable. No other refunds or credits will be given, unless we cancel your class, in which case you’ll receive a full refund. To withdraw from a class, call us during office hours; we do not process withdrawals by email. There are no partial refunds for student absences, scheduling conflicts, or weather-related closings.

Trial Classes We do not offer trial classes.

Weather Cancellations If Newton public schools are closed due to inclement weather, our classes that run in school buildings are cancelled. Decisions about off-site classes are made individually; check your class listing on our website. Classes cancelled due to weather will be made up at the end of the term; there will be no refunds for weather-related closings.

We are Inclusive NCE does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of age, race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, veteran status, or any other category protected by federal or state law.

Additional info & policies for Kids school-year programs Behavior Policy

Getting To Class

Locations

It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.

Kids at each school typically walk themselves to our classes, but younger kids are sometimes escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school and/ or teacher. NCE teachers arrive when school ends (12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all other days). On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (you must provide your own lunches and snacks). Kids from all schools are welcome at all our classes. School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes from other schools.

We post room locations to our website as soon as we have that information.

Early-Release Days

Late Fees

Special Circumstances

Please respect our staff and pick up your child on time. There is a $10 fee for every 10 minutes you’re late. At the fourth occurrence, these fees will double.

Contact us to discuss any medical conditions, allergies, learning styles, or other special circumstances that could impact your child’s experience in our program.

Elementary school classes meet at their regular times on early-release days; check our website for middle school class schedules.

617 559-6999

Pick-Up After Class At the end of class, our teachers will bring all kids to the main entrance of the school to be picked up by parents, guardians, or after-school staff. Kids in grades K-2 must be signed out by an adult; kids in grades 3-5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian. To give your permission, send an email to staff@ newtoncommunityed.org stating your child’s name, grade, NCE class, and school.

Night Owls A hearty and somewhat belated welcome to the two ladies on our staff who rule the roost at night. Elyssa Klein runs the show at Newton South. During daytime hours she’s a stylist for Stella & Dot and sells for OneHope Wine. She has a background in marketing and has also worked as an aide at Williams and Underwood. And she’s been a great help at Lifetime Learning, our program for senior citizens. South students: stop and say hi to Elyssa. She is sure to greet you with her signature cheery smile. Kathleen Solange takes over at North when the rest of us go home. She crosses the city from Newton South, where she works during the day as a counselor. With the little free time she has left, Kathleen loves to travel, bake, and cook. She’s a great help to our students and team of interns at North. Make sure you meet her!
