notes cover artist Deb Perugi Deb Perugi is a visual artist who got her start with a ”John Nagy Learn to Draw” kit when she was growing up in Ohio. After graduating from Penn State University with an art degree, Deb moved to the Boston area and became an illustrator at a map company in Cambridge. Her next job was at the Boston Globe, where she worked as an information graphic designer and mapmaker in the editorial design department. After 10 years at the Globe, Deb left to become a freelance graphic and web designer, and she still does both today. After moving to Newton in 1992, Deb added more fun to her day by becoming a jewelry designer and getting involved in the Newton arts scene. After relocating to Framingham in 2013, she decided to change gears and go back to painting. She has retained her connections to Newton through Newton Open Studios. Our cover’s oil painting, “Vermont Valley,” was done four years ago in a plein-air landscape class Deb attended at Concord Art Association. She is currently painting in a more abstract, expressionist style using oil and cold wax as a medium. She finds painting every day a pleasure. See all of Deb’s paintings—old and new—at www.perugistudio.com.

summer 2019 featured teacher LISA WB WALKER “Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Walker! Do I have to make a heart coil pot? I want to make something different.” Mrs. Walker: “As long as you use the coil technique and scratch and attach with slip, you can explore any idea you would like.” As an art instructor here, I’ve appreciated that Newton Community Education has supported my style of teaching art to children, teens, and adults: I teach them the skills they need to succeed, then act as their guide as they define and work toward their own unique goals; along the way I add “tools to their toolbox” to increase their problem-solving skills. I allow students of all ages the opportunity to learn through play. Teaching art in this way lays the groundwork for a diverse community of creative thinkers. When I was a child, I would pretend to be sick so I could stay home from school and color. On rare occasions, my mother would agree to “give me the day off”. We’d eat grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup and we’d color. Creative play was something I needed as a child, and my wise mother gave me lots of opportunities. I fostered creative play with my own children, but as a working parent, my approach looked a little different from my childhood experience. I sought outside programs that encouraged creative play and learning opportunities. NCE has these amazing programs, and that’s why I’ve felt so privileged to teach for them. Sign-ups for my summer pottery class are now open for kids and adults. Take advantage of this great opportunity to explore a medium that has so much to offer, and enjoy your own creative play. To learn more about Lisa WB Walker, Artist and Instructor, see her website at www.lisawbwalker.com.

staff picks Robin’s picks Contemplate Before You Click Claudia Ruiz-Gustafson (page 7) As a photographer myself, I know how easy it is to take lots of pictures with my iPhone, and then just delete the ones not worth saving. But remember when you had to really think before you took a picture? That’s what this instructor is all about; she’ll teach you to slow down, take photos that are more meaningful to you, and bring more depth to your work. What a great idea!

Succulent Buttercream Cupcakes Sandra Frezza (page 10) Little, green succulents lined the walkway leading to my grandparents’ backyard when I was growing up. My mom keeps these cute plants on her windowsill and has given cuttings to my daughter, so we have them now too. Our instructor designs them on cupcakes. Come see why they’re becoming such a hit in the cake decorating scene. They’re adorable, and sweet too!

Organize, Clean & Renovate Faina Shapiro (page 21) I don’t know about you, but I sometimes find it difficult to get organized during the school year, especially in the dark winter months. That’s why I’m excited to offer this class over the summer, when I’m ready to open my windows, let the sunshine in, and tackle those home projects. Our instructor is passionate about getting organized, and I think you will be too after you take her class. She’s got great tips for cleaning and renovating too.

Canasta Linda Lourie (page 11)

NCE TECH Coding with Kids staff (page 42)

I’ve been looking for a canasta instructor for a while, and hooray I finally found one. Linda’s a retired second grade teacher who has introduced hundreds of folks to canasta; for her, it’s about bringing together friends who haven’t met yet. For the record, I’m also looking for instructors for pinochle and cribbage; I’m all about bringing back vintage games.

My son traveled to Boston and Waltham for summer technology camps years ago. But you don’t have to go that far. New this summer we have programming classes for high schoolers right here at NCE. Kids can learn to code with Java, Python or Arduino, without a car trip to do so.

Kickboxing Katina McClain (page 13) When our new Pilates instructor suggested that we try offering her kickboxing class too, I initially hesitated. Kickboxing seems to be on the opposite end of the workout spectrum from Pilates. But Katina explained why together they’re a good fit (pun intended!) for someone looking for a full-body workout. We’re running them back-to-back this summer, to see if you’re interested in more classes like this for the fall.

Don Quixote: Madman or Visionary? Tracy Marks (page 17) I hadn’t a clue as to how popular this novel is—nor how rich a story—until Tracy suggested doing The Ingenious Gentleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha for her summer reading program with us. Tracy’s fabulously well-prepared and her enthusiasm for this task really impressed me. It might be daunting to take on a book this long, but you can do it as a group!

Every kind of Art Studio! Various (pages 26–33) I hit the jackpot with art teachers of every kind this summer. It’s like we’re an arts camp—we have classes for serious and/or just-for-fun artists, actors, and cooks. There are too many new classes to talk about here, but I’m particularly excited to see what kids make in Modern Mosaics, how they act in Curtain Calls, and if they fool folks with Imposter Baking.

Chess Intensive Ross Eldridge & Nicholas Sterling (page 38) These two teachers have inspired a new generation of chess enthusiasts. They have followings at all the schools where they teach during the year, and their students are winning trophies in tournaments near and far. I’m delighted that both are teaching week-long classes for us this summer. A great strategy for your future triumphs is to sign up now.

Art & Photography

Art & Photography Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. Bring a $7 materials fee payable to the instructor, and a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener.

Academic Drawing for Beginners

Advanced Drawing with Still Life

Jack Neylan, Instructor

Paola Page, Instructor

Welcome to the academy! So that you don’t have to time-travel to Europe in the 16th century, we’re bringing that form of art education direct to you. You’ll learn the rigorous style of drawing, painting, and sculpture taught in the European academies, but in a much more relaxed setting. You’ll work with graphite and charcoal, beginning with recreating master drawings and anatomical studies, moving to drawing from sculptures, and gradually working towards drawing a live model. By the end of the course you’ll be a certified 16th-century realist artist.

See the world in a new light—then draw it. Still-life drawing starts with careful observation inspired by the natural world around us. You’ll work on strengthening your powers of observation, and you’ll develop the skills and confidence to render shape, texture, size, and proportion. By the end of class, you’ll have a small portfolio of drawings to display as fine art or use as a basis for an edition of prints.

A model fee of $5-$10 is payable in class. Bring a drawing pad (17x24) and graphite pencil. Additional materials will be discussed.

We’ll use flowers, leaves, seed pods, and other organic objects as our subject matter. You’ll work on strengthening your powers of observation, and develop drawing skills to render shape, texture, size, and proportion with greater confidence. By the end of class, you’ll have a small portfolio of drawings as fine art or use as a basis for a continued edition of prints. All levels, new and returning students welcome. A materials list will be emailed.

Bring a box of willow or vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, charcoal pencil, polymer, a kneaded eraser, an Ebony graphite pencil, and a 16 x 20 white paper drawing pad.

Portrait Painting Jack Neylan, Instructor Paint portraits with acrylic. Acrylic is a relatively new medium in the history of painting, but its vibrancy of color and quick-drying aspect make it perfect for portrait painting. In this class we’ll look at classical and contemporary works of art and examine what qualities make an effective portrait. We’ll start by making our versions of famous portrait paintings and photographs, then for a final project, you’ll create a painting based on a photograph of your choosing. A materials list will be emailed to students.

Crafting Wall Quilts

Make a Sculpture

Danielle Larosee, Instructor

Paul Angiolillo, Instructor

You don’t need a circle of friends or an abundance of time to make a quilt. Join us and make a small quilt to decorate that empty wall in your home. You’ll learn the essential skills: piecing techniques, seam pressing, how to use a rotary cutter, and how to assemble your top quilt. All of this can be done on your basic home sewing machine. You’ll leave class with an 18”x 24” quilted wall-hanging, and all the skills you need to make any size or purpose quilt in the future.

Create original 3-D artwork. Learn to come up with an engaging design, assemble materials, and finish and display your work. Just bring some favorite retired household objects, a cracked wooden bowl, or some eye-catching found objects, and learn to turn them into whimsical, durable sculptures. A grouping of natural materials with an old picture frame could become an evocative wall relief, or maybe you’d prefer a garden sculpture. We’ll discuss your ideas, demonstrate lots of tools, and reveal tricksof-the-trade for creating attractive and resilient works of art. By the end of class you’ll have the basic skills you need to work in your own space at your own pace.

Do you want your writing to sparkle with vivid sensory detail and imagery, capturing the essence of your message? To write more descriptively and precisely, generating metaphors and similes revealing multiple layers of meaning? To construct lyrical and rhythmic lines or sentences, with rich alliteration evoking sound as well as sight? Class examples will be from poetry and fiction, but nonfiction writers also will benefit from mini-lectures, discussion, in-class exercises, and workshopping of students’ writing.

Build your own Minecraft mods with Java, the most popular programming language in the world. You’ll run your own Minecraft server, where you can customize your Minecraft experience with code, landscapes, texture packs, and more, and you’ll create super swords, obstacle courses, and minigames. Using all the functionality of Java, you’ll take your mods to the next level, applying your creativity and developing your problem solving skills (which are essential for all computer programming). Whether or not you’re a Minecraft fan, building Minecraft mods is a great way to learn to program. Grades 9-12.

Combine electronics and programming principles to build a robot. You’ll build an Arduino-powered, wheeled robot and use the C programming language to make your own autonomous vehicle. Starting with individual components, you’ll assemble your vehicle’s wheels and chassis, wire together the motors and sensors, and use the Arduino board as the controller. You’ll learn to control your robot remotely, then use AI (artificial intelligence) concepts to create an autonomous vehicle using C++. All levels welcome; our small class size allows for lots of individual attention. Grades 9-12.

General Info & Policies

Adults & Kids Access Our classes are open to everyone from all communities. Let us know if you have any special concerns or need special assistance. Age Requirements Adult classes are open to students 18 years of age and older. Age requirements for Kids classes are listed per class. Changes NCE reserves the right to cancel classes that are under-enrolled, and to change times, locations, and instructors when necessary. Discounts/Scholarships We offer a 15% discount to seniors (age 65+), veterans, and employees of the City of Newton. The discount is available on most of our classes, but only if you register by phone and let us know at the time of registration. ELL, one-session, pairs-rate, and other select classes are excluded. Discounts do not apply to materials, food fees, or our Kids classes, and can not be combined. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Call us for more information. Permissions We may occasionally post student work to our website or take pictures of students in our classes for use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this. Refunds/Withdrawals You can withdraw up to four days before the start-date of an adult class and seven days before the start-date of a Kids school-year class to receive a refund minus a $10 processing fee, or a credit-on-account minus a $5 fee. The start date is the date printed in our catalog. The $6 registration fee is non-refundable. No other refunds or credits will be given, unless we cancel your class, in which case you’ll receive a full refund. To withdraw from a class, call us during office hours; we do not process withdrawals by email. There are no partial refunds for student absences, scheduling conflicts, or weather-related closings. See the next page for our Kids Summer Refund Policy. Registration Fee We charge a $6 registration fee per person per session.

Waitlist Status If the class you want is full, sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you. Weather Cancellations If Newton public schools are closed due to inclement weather, our classes that run in school buildings are cancelled. Decisions about off-site classes are made individually; check the class listing online. Classes cancelled due to weather are made up at the end of the term; there are no refunds for weather-related closings. We are Inclusive NCE does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of age, race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, veteran status, or any other category protected by federal or state law.

Kids Behavior Policy It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given. Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures Drop-off: Please bring your child directly to his or her class each day; there will be directional signs and friendly staff to guide you from the main lobbies of each high school. Pick-up: If anyone other than a parent or guardian will be picking up your child, contact the NCE office by email. If your child is in grade 3-6 and can self-dismiss, email us at staff@newtoncommunityed.org with your permission. State your child’s name and NCE classes(es). Kids in grades 7 & up can self-dismiss with no written permission. Kids who self-dismiss can not remain in the building and must leave the school campus.

Our afternoon program runs from 4-5:30pm; our staff will pick up students from their afternoon classes and bring them to Extended Day. Sports Extended Day runs from 3–4pm.
