Newton North High School, Room 101 As early as age three, Isabella Klimov wanted to be an artist. She had a career as an architect for a time, before rediscovering her passion right here at NCE. When she moved to Newton in 2007, she began taking art classes with our wonderful watercolor teacher, Gary Tucker. Gary helped Isabella lose her fear of watercolor, and he inspired her to draw and paint regularly. She later moved on to pastel painting with Jeanne Gugino and Cyrus Whittier, and has recently discovered jewelry-making and the gratification that comes from making art and wearing it too. Isabella’s painting Winter Stream came to life in Zhanna Cantor’s landscape painting class at NCE. A hopeless perfectionist, Isabella strives for realism in her work; she hopes to capture the unsurpassed beauty of the natural world in her paintings, and move others by sharing her work with them. The NCE staff was certainly moved by this cover painting and the calm of her winter stream, and we hope you are too. Isabella has exhibited her work extensively in Newton and beyond. All her creations can be found on her website: isabellasart.wordpress.com. Editor’s note: We’re indebted to Isabella not just for the use of her painting on our cover, but also for the talents of her son Jesse, a favorite technology teacher in our summer Kids program.

Many thanks to these donors to our scholarship fund and supporters of our program Paula Black, May Chin, Clifford R. Cohen, Lisa Cukier, Jane De Simone, Debra Doncov, Henry Goldman, Janice Goldstein, Ellen Kaplan, Michael Koran, Carol Litzler, Gabrielle Meyer, Angela Pitter, Afkham Salie and L’Aroma Cafe & Bakery, Don Scope, Renee Senes, Ken Tempkin, Olivia Truslow, United Methodist Church of Newton, Sharon Wanunu, Lauren Zalkind, and the other kind people whose contributions arrived after the production deadline for this catalog. Donations allow us to increase both the number and size of the scholarships we offer each term, providing greater opportunities for individuals and families in need. We accept contributions in any amount. Thank you in advance for your generosity. A thousand thanks to our inestimable tech whiz Meryl Miller. We’ve brought Meryl on board as a consultant; she works with Susan to help us customize reports to improve our communications with staff, custodians, and you, our students. Meryl makes it all look super easy, but we know it’s not! On behalf of our whole staff, a big THANK YOU to Meryl.
notes I’m Jenny Marcelin, part of the NCE Admin staff. I’m a proud Caribbean girl from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I migrated here 14 years ago, and besides speaking English, mwen pale Kreyol, je parle Français, y yo hablo Español un poquito. I am the proud mother of a three-year-old girl and a boy who will turn six three days after Christmas. (Yeap, so he gets two gifts, not one, for many more years to come.) I am the only one in the NCE office who is a parent of small children—everyone else is talking about everything from college to kids’ careers to grandchildren while I am talking about daycare and kindergarten! I started working at NCE as the GED Examiner six years ago. I loved meeting people and counseling them towards reaching this important goal in their lives: obtaining their GED diploma. I am a people person, so having that human contact and knowing I was a part of someone’s big accomplishment in life was a good reason to sleep well every night. Now that NCE is no longer a GED testing center and is only a test prep center, the flame is not the same for me. But my new passion is our Online Learning category. It makes me happy knowing that no one can feel left out when it comes to learning, because if you have schedule or mobility issues, guess what? All you need is an electronic device and Internet access, and the sky’s the limit in your learning zone. As far back as my memory goes, I always wanted to be in the armed forces. It turns out I would have made a great intelligence officer, because I now act as the NCE sleuth. I use my detective skills to solve office “mysteries” like, how did our database put a student in a class who doesn’t exist in real life? But most of all, I enjoy working with my coworkers, and I especially enjoy talking to you—on the phone, or when you visit our office, as I hope you’ll do this term. We have some great offerings for you. But remember: if you can’t come to a class, look for our Online Learning classes, and if you have any concerns, give me a call and I will be happy to assist you.

How did the American roots music genres emerge on commercial recordings in the 20’s and 30’s and evolve into their modern day forms? What sparked the folk music revival of the 1950s and 60s and why has much of this traditional music experienced a resurgence in the last 20 years? We’ll look at artists like Gene Autry, Blind Willie McTell, Lead Belly, Fisk Jubilee Singers, Thomas Dorsey, Woody Guthrie and many more. We’ll also include contemporary artists and recordings that have kept the spirit of the older music alive, like Ollabelle, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bruce Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions, and more. Art & Photography Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing is the most approachable form of visual art. It is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. Bring a 9” x 12” sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener. A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class. New and returning students welcome.

Sargent’s Method of Drawing with Models Jack Neylan, Instructor John Singer Sargent’s paintings are worldrenowned for their technique and beauty. However, during his lifetime as an artist and teacher, Sargent spent much of his time drawing. Sargent saw drawing not only as a valid medium in its own right, but as the fundamental medium for any artist. Learn Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin with recreating his drawings and then gradually work towards creating your own work utilizing his methods. The course will culminate in two live-model sessions. Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, and an 18” x 24” drawing pad to class. A $10-$20 model fee is payable to the instructor. All levels welcome.
Whether you work in fine detail or more broadly, join us and learn about linear strokes, cross-hatching, scumbling, feathering, and blending. There will be plenty of demonstrations to guide you along the way as you practice your technique on a wide variety of subjects from flowers to metal objects. Expect to progress from a restricted palette to full color compositions, focusing on how to identify and adjust the colors you observe. Bring a small box of medium grade vine charcoal sticks, two General’s 2B medium charcoal pencils, a kneadable and a Pink Pearl eraser, a chamois cloth, and a 14” x 17” pad of quality charcoal paper to the first class. Additional supplies will be discussed in class. All levels, new and returning students welcome.

Change Your Brain Jeanne Mayell, Instructor
Time Management Tips Lorena Prime, Instructor
We used to think we were stuck with the brains we had; that if we were melancholy, for example, we just had to accept it. We’d admire the upbeat, positive, Oprah Winfreys of the world, and think, “If only we had their brains...” Now, neuroscience reveals that we can change our brains with simple mental exercises, just as we can change our bodies with a daily workout. We can in fact become open, more positive, and genuinely happier, not by repressing our negative thoughts, but by building up the positive pathways in our brains. Before long we can develop a natural buoyancy in our thinking and, along with it, a boost in our creativity, intuition, love lives, and careers. Join us and learn how to jump start the process to a new you.
If you’re just too busy and can’t get a grip on managing your time, take a night off and gain valuable tips to help you get in control. You’ll learn techniques that will help you prioritize, handle emails and papers, and basically get it all together. You’ll also acquire practical information so you can be more productive on a daily basis. We’ll address the most common time-management issues through writing exercises, Q & A, and Powerpoint presentations, and we’ll demonstrate how to tackle your problems and get motivated to organize and manage your tasks.

Yoga and Your Anatomy Ben Cohen, Instructor Is your downward dog a little droopy? Why can some people’s legs open to nearly a 180 degree split in seated angle pose, and yours won’t even spread to 90 degrees? It’s not all skill and practice—a lot of it has to do with your anatomy. Individual variation in bone structure can cause dramatic differences in joint range of motion. In this workshop you’ll learn to identify tension versus compression and discover how these sensations relate to the way your body looks and feels in a range of yoga positions. We’ll discuss how to know when it is appropriate to go deeper into a pose and when it’s time to back off, so you can better understand and explore the natural limits of your body. The class will include discussion, demonstration, and joint range of movement exercises. Although the class will not include a guided yoga flow, we’ll enter into a few yoga poses in order to feel in our bodies the concepts discussed. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a yoga mat, and avoid wearing perfumes or strong scents This is a standalone class, but you’ll get a $5 discount if you enroll at the same time in one of our Yoga classes! Writing a Memoir Judith Poole, Instructor The focus of memoir is on eliciting meaning, a theme, an emerging pattern, or a noteworthy incident, from a section of one’s life. The specificity of this focus sets it apart from autobiography, which spans one’s entire lifetime. Autobiography requires greater historical accuracy and follows a more linear progression starting with early years. In this class we will identify important turning points, and use them to launch our stories. We will give thought to the audience we aim to reach, and the impression we wish to leave with our potential readers. Participants will read published memoirs of their choice and discuss in class what qualities appealed to them (or not). Writing cues will be offered to keep the pen moving, and all will be encouraged (but not forced) to read stories aloud in class.

We’ve changed our format! We’ve heard you ask for a school-byschool class listing in this catalog, so we have provided it here, on pages 50-51. To accommodate this information, we’ve had to cut back on copy elsewhere. Here’s what you need to know:
• Weekday classes for elementary
schoolers start at 3:15pm every day but Tuesday; Tuesday classes start at 12:45pm. The time between the end of school and the start of class is for snacks from home, and to allow travel time for kids coming from other schools.
• All classes are one hour long except where otherwise noted.
• Elementary school classes meet
at their regular times on early-release Wednesdays and Thursdays.
• Class times and lengths are listed for middle and high school classes.
• There are no classes on Newton
Public Schools school vacations or holidays; additional “no-class” dates are listed with each class.
• Some of our course descriptions
have been shortened to fit here. Please check our website for complete class information.
Questions? See our FAQs on page 52, or call us! We’re here to help (and we really like doing that).

NCE Kids FAQs and Behavior Policy (school year programs) We hope your questions about NCE Kids classes are answered below. If there’s something we missed, please call us at 617-559-6999 or email us at staff@ newtoncommunityed.org. Q: My child gets out of school at 3:00 but her NCE class starts at 3:15. How will she get to her class?
A: Kids at each school typically walk themselves to our classes, but sometimes younger kids are escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school and/or teacher.
Q: Who will supervise my child before the class starts?
A: NCE teachers arrive when school ends
(12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all other days). Our teachers supervise the kids until the class starts. On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (please provide your own lunches and snacks). Q: My child wants to attend an NCE class at a different school. How does that work?
A: We welcome kids from all schools (in and out of Newton) at all our classes. Our 3:15 (12:45 on Tuesday) start time is set to allow for travel time between schools. We do not arrange transportation between schools. Q: I want to sign up all three of my kids for an NCE class. Is there a sibling discount?
A: No, we do not offer sibling discounts. Q: Elementary and middle schools are locked during the day. How does this affect NCE classes?
A: School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes. At the end of class, our teachers will bring all kids to the main
52
617 559-6999
entrance of the school to be picked up by parents, guardians, or after-school staff. Kids in grades K–2 must be signed out by an adult; kids in grades 3–5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian. To give your permission, please send an email to staff@newtoncommunityed.org stating your child’s name, grade, NCE class, and school. Q: What happens on early-release Wednesdays and Thursdays?
A: Our classes run at their regular times on early-release days. Q: My child is in the after-school program at his school. How will he get to and from his NCE class?
Q: My child has special needs; how can I know if a class will be right for him? A: If you call us, we can discuss the nature of your child’s needs and help you make this decision. Q: My child’s class starts next week; where is it taking place?
A: We post room locations to our website as soon as we get them from the school. Occasionally this doesn’t happen until the day the class starts. If that’s the case with your class, please have your child check with the school secretary for his class location.
A: Please ask your after-school director
Q: My child enrolled in an NCE class but has changed her mind. What is your refund policy?
Q: My child is in 2nd grade but there’s a class for 3rd-5th graders that she would love to join. Would this be okay?
A: If you withdraw more than seven days before the start of your class, you will receive a refund minus $10. There are no other refunds or credits. The $6 registration fee is non-refundable.
about getting your child to and from his NCE class as this varies by school.
A: We can sometimes make exceptions to the grade range that is listed per class. Please call us. Q: I’m interested in an NCE class for my child but I’m not sure he will like it. Can he try one class to find out?
A: No, we do not offer trial classes. Q: The class I’m interested in for my child is full. What should I do? A: Sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you. Also, your interest helps us determine future course planning.
Q: My child has another activity that conflicts with the first few weeks of her NCE class. Can she join the class late and pay a pro-rated fee? A: No, we do not pro-rate tuition for kids who miss some of our classes. However, for some classes it’s perfectly fine to start late. Please call us.
Q: What is your behavior policy?
A: We have a “three strikes and you’re out” policy. It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. We ask students to use only materials designated for their NCE class, to use these appropriately, and to treat each other and their teacher with respect. If your child does not meet these expectations after two verbal or written warnings, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. We have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate physical behavior. If a child inappropriately touches or acts to harm others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn with no further warnings, and no refund will be given.
