notes I’m Ursula, the new Marketing/Special Events Coordinator at NCE. When friends learn about my new job, I frequently hear, “I love NCE!” followed by a story about how one of our programs has touched their lives. One friend described the mother-son bonding she experienced while taking several woodworking classes with her son. Another described resurrecting an interest in painting after a long break. Still another talked about how a Business & Career class set her down the road to starting her own small business. I have my own NCE stories, too, since over the 14 years we’ve lived in Newton, my three sons have taken 13 NCE classes among them. I am particularly grateful for the fencing program. My youngest son tried the mainstream sports that his brothers and friends played, but nothing ever clicked. Then he discovered Fencing through an NCE after-school program, and it has become his true passion. He is now fencing competitively at the national level. I will forever be thankful for the introduction to the sport he received through NCE. Having seen firsthand the difference a single class can make, I am thrilled to be a part of this incredible community resource where kids and adults pursue passions, develop skills, and discover new interests. I was very familiar with NCE’s classes before coming to work here, but I knew little about our special programs and events like Lifetime Learning (p.30), our continuing education program for seniors, and our Mindfulness program (p.31) which promotes improved well-being. I especially want to call your attention to Celebrate Newton (p.3), NCE’s annual juried crafts fair. Much of my time over the past few months has been spent assembling a talented group of artisans and craftspeople for the fair. I plan to do my holiday shopping at Celebrate Newton (Sunday, December 7th at Newton South High School). I hope that you will, too! NCE has something for everyone. Take a look at our fall catalog, and sign up for class that appeals to you. You never know where it might lead.

Time Management: The Key to Success at Home or Work Howard Fuchs, Instructor
Match Your Career to Your Personality: Work Happy! Ilene Rudman, Instructor
86,400: the number of seconds in a day. Everyone on the planet shares and manages the same amount of time–whether a student, stay-at-home parent, or company CEO. Those who manage it well are often the most successful both at home and at work. Do you ever procrastinate over tasks you should be completing? Do you complete menial tasks while large, important ones are left undone? Are you constantly interrupted at work or home? We’ll explore the common time robbers and ways to overcome them. It’s recommended–but not required–that you keep a 30-minute time log (emailed to students) for at least several days prior to the class. By doing this, you’ll each come away with an individual plan to get more out of your day at home and work. Take some time now to save lots of time in the future!
Believe it or not, some people actually enjoy going to work! If you aren’t one of those people, or if you can’t decide what sort of work would suit you best, this is the class for you. We’ll use the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to help you understand your innate personality and identify a range of satisfying career choices. We’ll explore how people get energized, process information, make decisions, and conduct their lives. The MBTI is a highly reliable instrument that has been used for decades to help people make career and other important life decisions. Bring $12 to the first class for the cost of the MBTI.

Time Management Tips Lorena Prime, Instructor
We used to think we were stuck with the brains we had, that if we were melancholy, for example, we just had to accept it. We’d admire the upbeat, positive, Oprah Winfreys of the world, and think, “If only we had their brains...” Now, neuroscience reveals that we can change our brains with simple mental exercises, just as we can change our bodies with a daily workout. We can in fact become open, more positive, and genuinely happier, not by repressing our negative thoughts, but by building up the positive pathways in our brains. Before long, we can develop a natural buoyancy in our thinking, and, along with it, a boost in our creativity, intuition, immune system, love lives, and careers. Join us and learn how to jump start the process to a new you.

Writing New
Critical Thinking & Essay Writing Lionel Claris, Instructor Do you want to improve your critical thinking skills? We all have opinions that would benefit from critical introspection. Essay writing is an effective way to deepen your thinking and to improve your communication skills as well. If you want to learn to think and write critically about pretty much anything under the sun, then this class is for you. In contrast to “creative writing,” the emphasis of critical writing is not so much on creating a literary narrative as on giving a voice to your opinions. This can take many forms, including articles, argumentative essays, Op-ed pieces, and what sometimes goes under the name of personal essay writing. Even with the latter, however, the focus is not just on telling your story— although that is a part of it—but it is on communicating effectively what you think and why. In this class you practice being reflective about topics of interest to you, learn to organize your thinking better and become more methodical about writing.

Don’t Fight It—Write It! John Lawless, Instructor
Write Now! Judith Poole, Instructor
Did you once love to write poetry but became bogged down by the rules and constraints? Our poet believes that “you can write whatever you want to, whenever you want to.” You’ll write, share, and recite poems you’ve already written, and do short writing exercises in class. You’ll have a chance to receive feedback, if you wish. We’ll spark your creativity, give your writing a boost, and renew your poetic license... let’s sharpen our pencils and get going!
Let your pen take the lead in this facilitated workshop, and discover what your “writer within” wants to say. Write for the sheer joy of it, bypassing your internal critic. Whether you write all the time, hope to do so but haven’t gotten around to it, or your writing has lost its spark, enjoy the magic that occurs when a group engages in the creative process together. We’ll use various exercises to call out the muse, and participants will have a chance to read and receive feedback if they wish. Suggested reading before class: Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg.

Why should big kids have all the fun? Toddlers, accompanied by an adult, can learn the basics of soccer in this fun, noncompetitive environment. Players will increase their sense of balance, improve their coordination and physical movement, and have a leg up when they join the big leagues! Please wear shin guards and bring a soccer ball and water bottle. Ages 2–3 with an adult (one child per adult please). In case of questionable or bad weather, please call 617-499-4820 to find out if your class is running.

You just never know what will come up in a crab trap, but it’s always an adventure. This is a spot known for migrating water fowl—we may even catch a glimpse of Chumly the Seal. Directions will be emailed to enrolled students. For kids of all ages with an adult.

Practices are one night per week (Monday–Thursday and possibly Sunday) beginning in November and running through early March. Teams play 10 to 12 games on Saturdays and/or Sundays. The number of games, when and where they are played, and practice locations, may vary by grade level. League information and online registration will be available on September 3. Writing a standout essay doesn’t happen overnight. In this class, you’ll work with a professional writer who will help you choose your topic and improve your writing style. We’ll start by discussing what colleges are looking for (an essay that reflects who you are), and then, you’ll write. By the end of the class, you’ll be well on your way towards completion of your two Common Application essays, and you’ll have a handle on other essays your college applications may require. Attention High-Schoolers If you’re 16 or older, you’re welcome to join any of our adult classes. We’ve got a great selection to choose from—call us with questions.
The ACT is the college-readiness standardized test of choice in most of our country, and it is steadily gaining in popularity here in Massachusetts. It is accepted by all colleges, as is the SAT. The ACT may be a better choice for some students: it is considered more straightforward than the SAT, it tests science knowledge as well as more advanced math, and its writing section is optional for some schools (and is not reflected in the composite score). NCE is pleased to offer its first ACT test preparation class this fall. As with our SAT prep classes, it will be offered in two sections—one for Math/Science and one for English/Reading—and students can choose to enroll in one or both.
ACT Math/Science Review Divya Balakrishnan, Instructor This class will cover both the Math and Science sections of the ACT exam. We’ll devote one hour to math—learning content, applying it to questions on the ACT, and developing skills to omit unlikely answers/increase the likelihood that you’ll answer a question correctly. In the other hour we’ll focus on the science section, developing your critical thinking skills so you can efficiently gather the information you need from a passage to correctly answer conceptual multiple choice questions.
KH12-F14-1 $185 4 Wednesdays @ Newton South 7–9pm September 24 – October 15
ACT English/ Reading Review Jacqueline Clark, Instructor This class will cover the English, Reading, and Writing sections of the ACT exam. We’ll devote the first class to English; we’ll work on rhetorical skills, and on answering questions about usage and mechanics. The second class will be about Reading; we’ll focus on reading for clear comprehension to
answer questions about the ACT passages. The third class will be devoted to Writing, and you’ll have the opportunity to receive feedback on an ACT writing assignment. In the final class, we will review all three sections based on your feedback about areas that require more attention.

SAT Math Review Divya Balakrishnan, Instructor Secrets to the SAT revealed! Prepare yourself for the math portion of the SAT Reasoning test. We’ll review concepts in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, and we’ll explore test-taking strategies as well so you can approach the exam with confidence. Please purchase a copy of The Official SAT Study Guide, published by the College Board, and bring it to the first class.

SAT Verbal Review Alan Reinstein, Instructor Become familiar with the structure of the verbal section of the SAT Reasoning test: learn to approach sentence completion, critical reading, and the writing component of the test. By getting comfortable with the types of questions and the methods used to answer them, you will become more confident in approaching the test. We’ll use class time to build your skills and to practice test-taking under time constraints and simulated conditions. Please purchase a copy of The Official SAT Study Guide, published by the College Board, and bring it to the first class.
