summer 2017

notes meet our staff Susanne Chan-Wong I’m Susanne, one of the Admin staff here at NCE. My family moved to Newton 21 years ago. My daughter Rachel and son Mitchel are products of the Newton Public Schools. When my kids were about to go off to colleges out of state, I reminded them that Newton is not like the rest of the world! Not all places are as open-minded and diverse as we are; we’re lucky to live in this great city. I graduated with a Computer Science degree from Northeastern and worked as a software engineer for over 20 years. When my company downsized, I decided to stay home and spend some quality time with my kids. (Parents out there know, this is the hardest job!) I did enjoy my new role as part-time chauffeur, which allowed my kids to do afternoon activities. One year turned into two… and next thing I knew my kids were off to college and I was semi-retired! Being out of the software industry for so long, I was behind on the ever-evolving technology. But I wanted to get out of the house, so I became a permanent substitute at Cabot. I only worked two days a week, but it was exhilarating and different each day. As a substitute, I didn’t know what I would be doing until I got to work that day. I was a classroom teacher, gym teacher, art teacher, and personal aide. At times it was challenging, but I always enjoyed getting to know the kids. After about a year, I decided to work full-time and landed here at NCE. NCE is completely different from anything I’ve done in the past. It’s my first time doing customer service. It’s been very interesting helping people by phone, via email, and in person. Although I’m typically on the phone for a just a few minutes with people, I feel that I’m able to make connections. I’m always appreciative and proud when someone tells me I helped them in some way. It’s the little things in life sometimes that make someone’s day (including mine). During the summer, I like to visit our Kids classes. There are so many different types of classes! When I see the kids engaged in various activities, I wish I were a kid again! I did take a cooking class here and that was great. (Note to self: find time for more classes!) Its been eye-opening to see how NCE serves the community in Susanne’s Wish List so many ways, whether it’s enrichment afSummer classes: for ter-school programs for kids, SAT prep classes Silk Scarf Painting page 9 or Driver’s Ed for high schoolers, or enrichPottery page 11 ment programs for adults. There’s something Alexander Technique page 20 for everyone here at NCE! Call me and I’ll help you find what’s right for you.

Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. Note: A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor. Bring a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener.

Sargent’s Method of Drawing for Beginners Jack Neylan, Instructor John Singer Sargent’s paintings are world-renowned for their technique and beauty. However, during his lifetime as an artist and teacher, Sargent spent much of his time drawing. Sargent saw drawing not only as a valid medium in its own right, but as the fundamental medium for any artist. Learn Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin with recreating his drawings and then gradually work towards creating your own work utilizing his methods. The course will culminate in a live-model session. Note: A $10-$20 model fee is payable to the instructor. Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, and an 18x24 drawing pad to class.

A141-S17 $139 5 Thursdays @ Newton North 7–9pm June 29–July 27

Willing Your Way Jeanne Mayell, Instructor Are you feeling stuck or frustrated simply because you can’t get what you want out of life—a new job, losing weight, launching a successful project, or writing a book? In fact, there’s a way to achieve your goals and desires by willing them. This class teaches you how to use the power of intention to change your life. Most people don’t realize that we direct our lives with our many unconscious intentions and expectations, which are largely driven by our childhood training. Without realizing it, we may be sending negative messages to ourselves and to the world that sabotage us from getting what we want. This class will show you how to take charge of your life by emitting the intentions you really want for yourself. Whether it’s in the realm of love, spirituality, or more “worldly” achievements, you can learn how to achieve greater success. Learn firsthand how to use a technique called, “inner visioning” to break through blocks and “will” your way to goals. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Change Your Brain Jeanne Mayell, Instructor

How to See Visions Jeanne Mayell, Instructor

We used to think we were stuck with the brains we had; that if we were melancholy, for example, we just had to accept it. We’d admire the upbeat, positive, Oprah Winfreys of the world, and think, “If only we had their brains...” Now, neuroscience reveals that we can change our brains with simple mental exercises, just as we can change our bodies with a daily workout. We can in fact become open, more positive, and genuinely happier, not by repressing our negative thoughts, but by building up the positive pathways in our brains. Before long we can develop a natural buoyancy in our thinking and, along with it, a boost in our creativity, intuition, love lives, and careers. Join us and learn how to jump start the process to a new you.

Did you know that when you close your eyes and look inside your mind, your brain has the capacity to access information about yourself, others, and our world that you cannot get with everyday sight? This inner seeing, also known clairvoyance or using your third eye, opens a world of treasures that can enrich your life once you learn how see those visions. Come discover how to access these visions to gain insight and inspiration for your life. You’ll practice inner visioning exercises with classmates to learn how to read other people and the world in order to get a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you.

Whispers from the Other Side David Cohen, Instructor It’s not every day that you can meet someone who has survived a near-death experience and recovered with an awareness of the afterlife. Join us for an evening with someone who had an extraordinary event happen to him: after almost dying from an illness, David Cohen discovered that he had the ability to connect with his loved ones and others who had passed away. Unusual as it sounds, the phenomenon has become a legitimate topic since the best-selling On Death and Dying (1969) by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. Join David for a frank discussion about questions such as: “Where do you go after you pass away?” “Are our loved ones still with us?” and “Are our lives predetermined?” Bring your questions and an open mind. The first hour David will lecture, the second hour will be open for readings.
