Newton North High School, Room 101 Bonnie Lerner has been an artist her entire life. As a child, given crayons, paper, and glue, she was happy to be left alone for hours. Her formal art education includes Rhode Island School of Design, and a BFA from Mass College of Art, where she was also certified as a teacher. She continues to take art courses throughout the New England area. After a lifetime of drawing and painting, Bonnie’s adventure with monoprints and monotypes began in Mexico in 2000. She loves the sensuality of the materials, the immediacy of the final image, and the mysteries that are unlocked in the relationships between ink, plate, and paper. The idea for our cover art, Hanging Out, was born on a trip to Italy, where Bonnie was attracted to the clotheslines full of laundry hanging between buildings. After completing the work, she realized it related to her happy childhood memory of running back and forth between sheets and clothing on clotheslines in the courtyard of her Philadelphia apartment. “It was sunny and beautiful and so carefree!” (Just what we love about Hanging Out.) Bonnie’s work has been accepted into numerous juried shows in the Greater Boston area. Her home and studio are in Newton, where she loves to play with paper and paint, as well as to sew; reupholster; and make mosaics, collages, and jewelry. Larry Eldridge Flies South It is with mixed emotion that we part ways with our veteran Chess instructor, Larry Eldridge. Larry taught for NCE for more years than anyone here can remember; his tenure with NCE included stints at most of Newton’s elementary schools. Larry’s most notable successes were with kids from Cabot School, who repeatedly won big at statewide tournaments under his tutelage, including as recently as this spring. Sadly for us, Larry has moved to warmer climes, at least for the winters. (You may still see him subbing in a fall term class from time to time.) We’re grateful for Larry’s many years of wonderful work for NCE—we miss him already, and know you do too.

notes FEATURED TEACHER: CHIP PIATTI Some 26 years ago, my dear friend Anncharlene Dresner became Director of Newton Community Education. She called one spring day to say she was starting a new summer camp and asked if could lead a couple of morning activities. I’ve been with NCE ever since. Trained as an anthropologist, microbiologist, theatrical producer, musician, and children’s group social worker, I have had a multi-faceted career. At M.I.T. I was sub-contracted out to NASA to make food for astronauts. As a community youth worker, I programmed and directed afterschool programs for kids. And, at the Museum of Science, I helped map Mt. McKinley. For much of this time, I was teaching evening classes at the Boston Architectural College, as I still do today. Where, one might ask, could a person with all of these interests (and many more) share all of this experience? The answer, of course, is NCE. And while I enjoy the tours and classes I offer for adults, my principal interest and work is Innovations, our camp like none other, now in its 26th year. The number and scope of activities at this successful program allow me to indulge in many of my favorite interests in a setting that many campers and parents have described as “much more of a family than a camp.” Although it runs for just two jam-packed, too-short weeks in August, we begin preparing for Innovations in late December. During January and February we hold interviews for potential Counselors-in-Training and additional instructors to join our loyal returning staff (and we fill the camp and look sadly at its long wait list). By April, preference ballots are sent to campers so I can design their camp experience based on their choices of activities. By June, we have our master schedule for all Chip’s classes this summer: 120+ Innovators (campers, C.I.T.s, and staff) and know Gelato & Cannolis: North End Tour what materials we’ll need to make it all happen. (Adults) page 11 Camp Director at Innovations is not my only role at Draw & Build Architecture Studio NCE, but it’s the one that is most rewarding, most (Kids) page 50 exhausting, and most fun. It makes the summer sing. Innovations Editor’s Note: Ask not what Chip has done, ask what he (sorry, this one’s sold out) has not done!

CREDITS Students seeking high school credit must get written authorization from their school and present it to our office prior to the start of their course(s).

DIRECTIONS Please see our website for maps, directions, and floorplans of the high schools, where most of our classs for adults take place.

DISCOUNTS If you’re a senior (age 65+), a veteran, or an employee of the City of Newton, you’re eligible for a 15% discount off the tuition of many of our classes, but only if you register by phone and let us know at the time of registration. The discount does not apply to ELL, one-session, and other select courses, and cannot be combined with any other discounts, such as couples rates. Discounts do not apply to materials or food fees, including those that are built into our tuition.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS If Newton public schools are canceled due to inclement weather, our on-site classes are cancelled. For inclement weather updates, call 617-559-9020 for the Newton Public School’s Building Hotline. Decisions about off-site classes are made individually; please check your class listing on our website.

OFFICE HOURS Our main office is at Newton North High School, 457 Walnut Street, Room 101, Newtonville. We are open from 8:30am to 5pm (or 8pm when classes are in session). Our satellite office at Newton South High School, 140 Brandeis Road, Newton Center, is open 5 to 8pm when evening classes take place, and during the day by appointment.

PARKING Free parking is available in lots at both high schools. There is additional parking on neighborhood streets; pay attention to all official street signs, as parking laws are enforced.

Photos We may occasionally take pictures of students in our classes for use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.

WITHDRAWALS/REFUNDS You must withdraw at least seven days before the class start date printed in our catalog to receive either a tuition refund minus a $10 processing fee, or a course voucher minus a $5 processing fee. We’re sorry, but no other refunds or vouchers will be given. Full refunds are given if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment. The $6 registration fee is non–refundable unless we cancel a class. NCE reserves the right to cancel classes that are under-enrolled and to change times, locations, and instructors when necessary. Refunds for checks and cash take four to six weeks; for credit cards, allow one week. To withdraw from a class, call us during office hours. Kids summer classes You must withdraw by May 27 to receive a refund minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds or credits will be given after May 27. Transfers are possible, space permitting. There will be a $50 fee for all transfers.

Sargent’s Method of Drawing with Models Jack Neylan, Instructor

Use the summer harvest as inspiration for your drawings. We’ll pick from Newton South’s student-run garden to draw a variety of still-life arrangements highlighting the harvest’s bounteous shapes and colors. Using graphite pencil, colored pencils, or pastels, you’ll capture the beauty of the season. Bring graphite pencils, and a kneaded eraser, board, and drawing paper to the first class. A $5 materials fee is payable to the teacher at the first class. All levels welcome.

John Singer Sargent is known for his paintings, but during his lifetime as an artist, Sargent spent much of his time drawing. He saw drawing both as a valid medium in its own right and the fundamental medium for any artist. Learn Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin by recreating his drawings and then work towards creating your own work utilizing his methods. The course will culminate in two live-model sessions. Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, and an 18x24 drawing pad to class. A $10–$20 model fee is payable to the instructor. All levels welcome.

Through the practice of drawing, we learn to see the world around us and then interpret it. In this class, you’ll work from a different still life each week; our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. Bring a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener. Learn a new art-making technique each week to create whimsical artwork for your home. You’ll combine materials such as acrylic paint, colored pencil, fabric, and wood to make unique creations. Techniques to be explored include Xerox transfer, acrylic paint texturing, collage layering, stamping, stenciling, and more. You will leave class with several personal pieces ready for hanging. Still Life with Watercolors Jeanne Gugino, Instructor Explore the elements of landscape and stilllife painting using watercolors. We’ll draw and paint fruits, flowers, bowls and vases, to gain an understanding of light, form, and dimension. Through layering and color-mixing exercises, you’ll develop techniques to capture the unique aspect of transparency in watercolor. We’ll also discuss the vision and techniques of great watercolor artists such as Sargent and Turner, and modernists such as Klee and Nolde. See online class listing for required materials list. Watercolor Painting: Advanced Gary Tucker, Instructor Improve your watercolor painting techniques. You’ll learn to create sparkling watercolors consistently and with confidence. Abstract Painting for Beginners Melissa Kulig, Instructor Explore abstract painting concepts as you learn to paint with acrylics, an extremely versatile medium that’s perfect for abstract painting. Inspired by abstract masters such as Pollock, Mondrian, and Kandinsky, you’ll experiment with shapes, textures, color fields, palette-knife techniques, and painting without brushes. Plus, we’ll discuss what makes a successful composition—there’s room for all styles with abstract art. Bring a different common household object to class each week (such as a sponge or toothbrush), and expect to learn many different abstract painting techniques. Introduction to Oil Painting Jack Neylan, Instructor Oil paint is a fluid medium; the paint is slow to dry and easy to blend, so you can make changes as your work evolves. In this class you’ll learn the basic color wheel and how to properly mix paints. Starting with still-life painting, moving to abstract, and working towards live-model painting, you’ll develop new skills and gain a solid understanding of this medium. We’ll use linseed oils and stand oils as you explore on canvas, linen and wood, and you’ll learn the proper precautions when using turpentine mixes. Expect to complete two paintings. Bring a small cotton canvas, paint brush and a selection of paints. Other materials will be discussed in the first class. All levels welcome.

Taking Better Pictures with your Digital Camera Steve McGrath, Instructor

Botanical Photography Workshop Steve McGrath, Instructor

If you’re just getting to know your digital camera and its features, take this opportunity to learn from an expert. Learn how and when to use your camera’s special features such as program and manual modes, aperture, and shutter priority. We’ll also discuss basic composition and how to best use light for different situations, such as shooting plants, people, extreme close-ups, and landscapes. Bring your camera and one or two of your prints to share with the class. Handouts provided.

Take your photography from good to great while shooting beautiful botanical gardens. We’ll focus on camera settings, composition, and lighting as you practice your technique. Learn to use wide-angle, normal, and telephoto lenses to strengthen composition for maximum impact. You’ll also get creative tips on how to use white balance and ISO to enhance and expand your images. We will review and critique photography during class. The first two Tuesday classes meet at Newton North. The third class will meet in the parking lot at the gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley. Dress for the weather. Digital Photography: Beyond Beginner Steve McGrath, Instructor Learn to operate your camera in semi-automatic and manual modes, and create sharp, high-quality images with the appropriate depth of field. We’ll discuss techniques like choosing the right combination of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO; using light in challenging situations to create interesting photos; and working with exposure compensation, light metering, and autofocus. We’ll also discuss how to best compose images for maximum artistic effect. The emphasis will be on outdoor photography; there will be plenty of opportunity to present your photography for group critique and analysis. Bring your digital SLR camera. Advanced Photography Steven Sulewski, Instructor Take pictures like a true visual storyteller. Through exercises in light, color, and composition, you’ll learn methods to improve your shooting techniques. We’ll review individual images as well as bodies of work by well-known photographers. We’ll break into teams for group photo shoots, and we’ll critique and fine-tune our projects as we evaluate what makes a successful image. You’ll have homework so you can practice what you learn in class. Expect to finish this course with a compilation of photographs and a greater understanding of this art form. WordPress is one of the most popular blogging tools on the web; it’s easy for anyone to post ideas, pictures, audio, and video. But it’s also much more than just a blog; you can use it to build a fully functional website, and its built-in content management system (CMS) makes it easy to maintain. We’ll go over how to buy a domain name, purchase a hosting package, and install WordPress on your own server. You’ll work through the fundamental elements of Wordpress, understand the various roles of its users, and get tips to get you up and running quickly. Microsoft Excel: Beginner* Michael Toon, Instructor If you have little or no knowledge of Microsoft Excel, join us and learn to create and edit professional-looking spreadsheets for a variety of purposes and situations. You’ll enter and edit data; format cells, rows, columns, and worksheets; and insert, position, and resize graphics. This class covers collaborating, and managing workbooks; creating and modifying hyperlinks; printing; and organizing workbooks. You’ll work with Microsoft Excel 2010 on PCs running Windows 7; this is not a Macintosh computer class.

Getting the Most From Your iPad Howard Loewinger, Instructor The iPad tablet can do just about everything a full-sized computer can do—in the palm of your hand. We’ll cover the basics: how to use the touchscreen interface, email, and the Internet, plus some more advanced features like how to customize your screen and watch movies. You’ll look at the various settings, like how to figure out how much storage you have left and how to delete apps you no longer use. Argentine Tango for Beginners Roger Wood, Instructor Argentine Tango began in the early 1900s in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and its popularity has since spread worldwide. Tango is best known for its outward display of romance and sensuality. Walking Tour of Olmsted’s Arboretum Brian Karlsson-Barnes, Instructor Join us for a docent-led garden tour at Arnold Arboretum where we will consider the design of America’s first landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Ikenobo: Japanese Flower Arranging Mimi Santini-Ritt, Instructor Achieve the peace of a Japanese monk with this beautiful style of flower arranging. Senno Ikenobo taught, “Not only beautiful flowers, but also buds and withered flowers have life, and each has its own beauty.” In this course, you’ll design arrangements in both the very traditional and more modern styles of Ikebana, making original floral designs that embody your vision of the plant’s beauty while holding the mark of your spirit. One of the most studied composers in the history of Western art music, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was one of the first in a long string of great Austro-German composers, from Beethoven to Brahms to Schoenberg. His music was revered by composers outside the German tradition, and has even inspired major compositions by Russian composers Stravinsky and Shostakovich. J.S. Bach composed numerous sacred works, including “The Mass in B Minor,” “St. John’s Passion,” and Lutheran cantatas. Going Solar: what’s really involved in adding A rooftop Solar System Craig Forman, Instructor

Did you know that some weeds and trees can help you stay healthy? Join us and learn to identify medicinal plants and trees commonly found in the woods and used by herbalists today. At this time of year, roots, barks and mushrooms are usually harvested, so we’ll focus on these and others. Expect to spot sassafras, nettle, birch, pine, wild cherry and maybe some wild medicinal mushrooms along our way. You’ve seen solar panels popping up on rooftops all over town and have probably been flooded by suppliers offering to give you a free quote. Due to generous tax incentives and the relatively high cost of electricity, MA is one of the best states in the country for adding a rooftop solar energy system. But selecting a supplier, understanding the real potential, and getting the project completed can be much more complex than the solar suppliers portray it. Darkroom Photography Ashley Saccoach, Instructor In the “dark” ages, people took pictures with huge boxes, covered by large blankets to block out all the light. Those days are behind us, but the modern era of darkroom photography is not, and this is how some of the most beautiful pictures are made. Join us to discover the art of darkroom photography. You’ll learn the basic functions of a camera, which apply to both film and digital cameras; we’ll shoot a variety of pictures, and experience the magic as photographs pass through different chemical solutions to come to life before our eyes. We’ll experiment with photograms; make pinhole cameras, handcolored photos, and collages; and discuss the history of photography and influential photographers. By the end of the week, you’ll have a portfolio of original photographs to take home, and our last class will include a show for family and friends. With fusing, you’ll create a plate, necklace, and decorative tiles. With mosaic, you’ll make a trivet, name plate, or decorated mirror. With jewelry-mosaic, you’ll place glass beads and pieces in a deep pendant to create a unique necklace. And with etching, you’ll apply a resist to a glass piece and cut out a design. ...and Sciences Camp Invention Judi Fitts, Director Enjoy high-energy activities that encourage inventive thinking and creative problem solving, while applying science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. In Week 1, Envision, you’ll become studio crew members for a TV show and work to create and test gadgets that solve viewer challenges; find a magnificent island by navigating upcycled ships while learning about buoyancy, orienteering, and magnetism; take a fantasy adventure in a time machine to explore important moments in invention history and make your own inventions. In Week 2, Epic, you’ll power a circuit using solar energy and engineer robotic inventions inspired by the unique biology of a cricket; design tree houses integrating simple machines and produce and promote prototypes for a new green energy-fueled park; and enter the Invention Lab, where you’ll use a wrecking ball and mock dynamite to demolish structures, code a programmable robot, conduct chemistry experiments, and more. In both weeks you’ll take apart machines and reconfigure their parts to make big innovations, explore the science of 3D printing, tinker with circuits to get your gears moving, and enjoy inventive outdoor games. Start by making a simple drawing in Photoshop, then add coloring, layering, and other effects to create dazzling art. Invent a cast of characters, and draw a background for them to inhabit; then transition them into a simple digital comic. Draw & Build— Architecture Studio Chip Piatti, Instructor Design your dream house and learn tricks of the trade used by real architects. You’ll draw floor plans and build models of your house, presenting your creative ideas for review by classmates. You’ll make drawings on graph paper with a variety of architectural pencils, and build models from cardboard, paper, and additional materials you’ll bring from home. We’ll provide the drawing materials: pencils, paper, erasers, squares, and scales. At the end of the week, you’ll have drawings and models of your creation to take home, and will share these in a presentation for family and friends on the last day. Game Creators Rachel Zakuta, Instructor Join other wannabe fiction writers and would-be computer programmers and write your own interactive online game. Using a specialized program called Choicescript, you’ll learn the computer code you need to design action-packed adventure games. You’ll work as a team to craft the story, create the characters, write the code, and of course sample the finished product. You’ll also analyze the personality type associated with your game-playing choices. No problem if you’re new to computer programming; this is a great place to start. But you must love to be creative and write. Your final games will be hosted on the Choice of Games website for friends and family to play.

Imagine a zero-pollution mix of bikes, electric vehicles, and buses, all sharing the road with state-ofthe-art lane markings and bike protections. Learn the skills you need to make your imagined streets a reality. We’ll assess hazards, then create and advocate for safe ways to get to Newton’s middle and high schools. You’ll collect and map data on origins, destinations, and obstacles, using GIS, Google Maps, and GoPro. You’ll design persuasive posters and materials to sway public opinion. As bonus attractions, we’ll have visits by some of Boston’s leading transportation experts to walk our streets and offer planning tips, and we’ll do a trial bike ride on our current streets, imagining our future ones (you must have access to a bike for this). Songwriting with GarageBand Deanna Mustachio, Instructor Learn to write a song and record it for posterity. You’ll coax out your most meaningful lyrics; create a catchy melody; and learn to structure a song, add instruments to the melody line, and record your song using GarageBand. If songwriting isn’t your thing, you can use GarageBand’s existing loops and incorporate jam packs or other sound effects to make an original music masterpiece.

Bring your instrument if you have one, but don’t worry if you’re not a musician; no musical or GarageBand experience is necessary. You’ll leave the class with a recorded copy of your original music. Grades 5–9.

Web Design Jesse Klimov, Instructor Build your own website from the ground up. Learn to create great web pages that include pictures, sound, and video. You’ll explore languages like HTML and CSS that are “under the hood” of all websites, and you’ll consider ways to organize colors, layouts, and content to make your pages stand out. You’ll use the Web as your primary source for images, but you can bring other materials that you’d like on your site too. Soccer for the Whole Family Soccer for Moms Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors Soccer is great exercise, lots of fun, and not just for kids. This class is for moms who have been watching their kids play soccer and want in on the action, or for any other grown-up girl who wants to play the game. Our coaches will officiate the games and give pointers to help improve your skills. Players at all levels are welcome (even if you’re not a soccer mom); our goal is to give you a good workout, plus some soccer inside scoop so you can maximize your enjoyment while cheering from those sidelines. Wear shin guards and bring a soccer ball and water bottle to every session; cleats are a good idea too. Warning: It’s not as easy as it looks! Ages: Adults!

Why should big kids have all the fun? Toddlers, accompanied by an adult, can learn the basics of soccer in this fun, noncompetitive environment. Players will increase their sense of balance, improve their coordination and physical movement, and have a leg up when they join the big leagues! Shin guards and soccer balls are optional, but please bring a water bottle. Ages 2–3 with an adult (one child per adult please).

NCE Kids Summer Policies Ages & Grades

How To Make A Full Day

Self-Dismissal

All grades listed are for Fall 2016. Please make sure you enroll your child in the appropriate class for his or her grade.

Choose the morning and afternoon programs you want (making sure they’re running at the same location) and sign up for lunch too. Our staff will take your child from the morning class to lunch and from lunch to the afternoon class, and you can pick up from there. There is no need to sign up for lunch  if your child is enrolled in a class that runs from 9–2:30 or later, as they will have lunch as a class. Lunch is not offered for kids who are enrolled in a single half-day program. You must bring your own lunch.

If you provide your child’s teacher with a signed note from you, your child can self-dismiss from his or her class.

Refunds Our summer classes fill fast, so we ask you to carefully consider your options before registering for a class. If you change your mind before May 27, you can have a refund minus a $25 processing fee. After May 27, no refunds or credits will be given. A transfer may be possible, space permitting. There is a $50 fee for each transfer.

Special Needs It is extremely helpful to us if you make us aware of your child’s special needs. Some classes are better suited than others for individual kids, and we can help you choose an appropriate class. However, most of our teachers were not trained as special education teachers, and if your child receives special attention during the school year, we may not be able to provide that level of attention in our programs.

Behavior Policy We have a “three strikes and you’re out” policy. We expect students in our classes to follow their teacher’s instructions and treat each other and their teachers with respect. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will bring this to your attention. If your child’s behavior continues to be inappropriate, you will receive a call from the NCE office and may be asked to remove your child from the program for the day. If after that there is still no change, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. We have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate physical behavior. If a child inappropriately touches or acts to harm others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn with no further warnings, and no refund will be given.

Extended Day Our staff will bring your child to the designated Extended Day location and you can pick up there. Extended Day runs until 5:30pm. We will not pro-rate our fee for Extended Day, but you are welcome to send your child for fewer than five days. Please let us know if you plan to do this. Please be prompt; there are no late pick-ups!

Snacks & Lunch Please bring your own snacks for half-day programs, and lunch as well for full-day ones.

Discounts/Scholarships We do not offer discounts on our Kids programs. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Call us for more information.

How To Find Your Class Come to the main entrance of the school and you’ll have help from there. We’ll have color-coded signs and friendly staff to guide you, and in some cases we may send you specific directions by email too.

Late Pick-Up Fees Late pick-ups will be charged as follows: 1st time: $25 for each 10 minutes you’re late. 2nd time: $50 for each 10 minutes you’re late. If you’re late three times over the summer, you will be asked to withdraw your child from our program and no refund will be given.

Allergies Please let us know ahead of time. We want to provide a safe environment for all of our students, so we’re glad to alert a student’s class when we learn of any specific allergies. However, we may have difficulty accommodating you in our cooking classes.

What To Do When A Class Is Full Always sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you.

Photos We may occasionally take pictures of kids in our classes for use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.
