notes cover artist: Nellie Robinson Nellie Robinson is equally enthusiastic about gouache painting, computer programming, and computer-generated animation. She grew up in Newton, attended Newton North High School, and graduated from the Brown/Rhode Island School of Design dual degree program with degrees in computer science and illustration. Having spent the first 22 years of her life on the East coast, Nellie decided it would be a good adventure to move to the other side of the country after graduation. She currently works as a computer programmer for a visual effects studio in Hollywood, and on the weekends she fills sketchbooks with gouache studies of Los Angeles landscapes. Though her current subjects are mostly mountains, palm trees, and smog, she occasionally creates more narrative pieces. This cover illustration, titled Peter, is a character concept exploring the comfort and discomfort of home: a Peter-Pan-like character who has outgrown his surroundings yet is hesitant about returning to the outside world. You can find Nellie on Instagram as @_narobins.

winter 2018 featured teacher Bridget Frey When I teach acting classes, my focus is always on the story the actor is telling. A good story has a hero facing twists and turns, challenging obstacles, and, if they are lucky, reliable allies to help them find the best path to reaching the ultimate goal. Understanding the journey of your character is the key to shaping a memorable performance, no matter what the age of the actor. I got a BA in Theatre and English from Chatham College in 1994, and then moved to Boston for a series of internships at local theatre companies. These led to a position as Literary Manager and Resident Dramaturg at Boston Theatre Works. My day jobs included working in several local box offices, keeping me in the theatre and able to talk about all the shows I loved. Eventually, I wanted to expand my opportunities, so I went back to school and got my MA in Theatre Education from Emerson College, which allowed me to return to long-neglected skills—acting, directing, and writing. I had two small children, and was drawn to projects that allowed me to share my love of theatre with them and other young children. I’ve been with NCE since 2014, teaching grades 1-5 in weekly classes after school, and weeklong summer classes. I also teach at the JFK Elementary School in Somerville and the Watertown Children’s Theatre. Beyond my teaching, I have directed short pieces for Open Theatre Project and Acme Theater, and will be directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Medford next summer. I live in Brookline with my husband, two sons, and an enormous cat. I hope to see you at the theatre! Bridget Bridget’s classes this Winter Actors Studio at Burr, Lincoln-Eliot, Zervas, and Horace Mann. Look for her summer classes, coming soon!

Intro to Classical Drawing Jack Neylan, Instructor Experience art school as it was in the 1800s and learn to draw like the modern masters. We’ll carefully study the human figure as they did, and we’ll focus on drawing proportionally and realistically rendering our subjects. Working with graphite and charcoal, we’ll begin by recreating master drawings and anatomical studies; then we’ll move to drawing from sculptures, and gradually working towards drawing a live model. If you missed out on art school 200 years ago, now’s your chance to make up for lost time. A model fee of $10 is payable in class. A materials list will be emailed.

Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life arrangement. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor. Bring a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener.

Botanical Drawing A Big Thank You...
Melissa Kulig, Instructor
to the Russian School of Math for opening up their doors to us. We couldn’t run our daytime classes without them.
See the world in a new light and then draw it. Botanical drawing is the art of careful observation inspired by the natural world around us. We’ll use flowers, leaves, seed pods, and other organic objects as our subject matter. You’ll work on strengthening your powers of observation, and develop drawing skills to render shape, texture, size, and proportion with greater confidence. By the end of class, you’ll have a small portfolio of drawings you can frame as fine art or use as a basis for a continued edition of prints. All levels, new and returning students welcome.
The Colored Pencil Cyrus Whittier, Instructor Colored pencils empower the artist to create works that incorporate aspects of both drawing and painting. In this class, we will work with simple still life setups to study key concepts for handling the medium in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere. Basic drawing skills are recommended but not required. New and returning students welcome. Bring a set of 36 Prismacolor Soft Lead Colored Pencils, a hand-held sharpener, a Mars Staedtler Plastic eraser, and a 9x12 pad of Stonehenge white paper to the first session.

Using a variety of media such as pen, pencil, conte crayon, colored pencil, and others, you’ll learn to create dimension and mass in your art. Focusing on this way of rendering, we’ll draw from still life setups, natural forms, and figures, as we explore abstraction in our work. We’ll also review some artists that are known for their technique, including Rubens, Michelangelo, Seurat, Rembrandt, and daVinci. Expect homework. All levels welcome. Bring an inexpensive sketchbook (at least 9x12), a kneaded eraser, and drawing pencils to class.

Acrylic Painting for Beginners Jack Neylan, Instructor Many artists enjoy working with acrylics for its advantages: it can be manipulated for various visual results, acrylics are water-based (instead of solvents, which are toxic), and they dry very fast—so it is easy to learn quickly! Explore art in this medium and learn to paint with acrylics. We will cover essential foundation skills such as how to set up your palette, color mixing and theory, and composition. Class work will include a variety of painting projects including observational painting from still lifes, photographs, and portraits. A materials list will be emailed to students.

Portrait Painting with Acrylics Jack Neylan, Instructor Acrylic is a relatively new medium in the history of painting, but its vibrancy of color and ability to dry quickly make it perfect for portrait painting. Portraiture is an essential and universal form of art and we will focus on portrait painting through the medium of acrylic paint in this class. We’ll look at both classical and contemporary works of art and examine what qualities make an effective portrait. We’ll also work from reproductions of famous paintings and photographs, and will have one session with a guest model. For a final project, you’ll create a painting based on a photograph of your choosing. A $10 model fee is payable to the instructor. A materials list will be emailed to students.

Homemade Pasta & Special Sauces
Classic Indian Cooking
Kimi Ceridon, Instructor
In a traditional Indian kitchen, there are some never-fail recipes that are handed down from generation to generation. They incorporate all the basic spices and oldworld techniques, but are deceptively simple to prepare. In this hands-on class, each region of India will be represented with one of its own classic recipes. We’ll make shreekhand (thickened and sweetened yogurt dessert), potatoes with stuffing, chhole (curried chickpeas), poori (deepfried whole wheat bread), coconut rice, and vegetable pakora. Learn about this rich and varied cuisine as you prepare these delicious traditional Indian dishes.
Who doesn’t love fresh pasta made from scratch? You don’t need a machine to make it; join us for this class to learn how. We’ll start with a basic egg pasta dough, and make pappardelle with bolognese sauce, squash ravioli with sage butter, and linguini with alfredo sauce. You’ll learn about the pasta maker and try your hand at various machine techniques, but you can replicate these recipes at home with nothing more than a rolling pin and sharp knife. A $15 food fee is payable to the instructor. Bring a sharp chef ’s knife, a rolling pin, several take home containers and an apron.

The Tea Room
Sandra Frezza, Instructor
Paul Angiolillo, Instructor Tea’s proper use is to amuse the idle, relax the studious, and dilute the full meals of those who cannot use exercise,” wrote English writer Samuel Johnson, who reputedly drank 25 cups of tea a day. No other plant has influenced history as has camellia sinensis—the tea plant. From China, India, and Russia, to Japan, the Middle East, and the U.S., tea has played a major role in trade, technology, religion, politics, and artistry. Join us to sample some delicious varieties from around the globe. Along with our tea-tasting, we’ll enjoy a lively slideshow on the fascinating history of tea, featuring fierce-looking Tibetan tea-route guards, vast English tea palaces, Japanese tea ceremony paintings, and more. We’ll sample several fine loose-leaf teas, with accompanying foods and plenty of samples to take home. A $5 fee is payable to the instructor. Bring a favorite mug or two to class.

Writing a Memoir Judith Poole, Instructor The focus of memoir is on eliciting meaning, a theme, an emerging pattern, or a noteworthy incident, from a section of one’s life. This focus sets it apart from autobiography, which spans one’s entire lifetime. We’ll identify important turning points, and use them to launch our stories. Then we’ll give thought to the audience we aim to reach, and the impression we wish to leave with our potential readers. You’ll read published memoirs of your choice and discuss in class what qualities appealed to you (or not!). The instructor will offer writing cues to keep your pen moving, and all will be encouraged (but not forced!) to read their stories aloud in class.
Do you want your writing to sparkle with vivid sensory detail and imagery capturing the essence of your message? To generate metaphors and similes which ripple across the page, revealing multiple layers of meaning? To write lyrically and rhythmically, with rich alliteration and assonance? Although many class examples will be from poetry, both fiction and nonfiction writers as well as poets will benefit from mini-lectures, discussion, in-class exercises, and workshopping of students’ writing.

Getting To Class
Locations
It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.
Kids at each school typically walk themselves to our classes, but younger kids are sometimes escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school and/ or teacher. NCE teachers arrive when school ends (12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all other days). On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (you must provide your own lunches and snacks). Kids from all schools are welcome at all our classes. School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes from other schools.
We post room locations to our website as soon as we have that information.

Pick-Up After Class At the end of class, our teachers will bring all kids to the main entrance of the school to be picked up by parents, guardians, or after-school staff. Kids in grades K-2 must be signed out by an adult; kids in grades 3-5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian. To give your permission, send an email to staff@ newtoncommunityed.org stating your child’s name, grade, NCE class, and school.

“As someone who drew and painted my entire life, I was shocked by how much I didn’t know when I took this class. Jack is the first formal art teacher I’ve had, and he was fabulous at teaching the basics. There’s always something more to learn!”
