Newton North High School, Room 101 The vibrant tulips on our cover are by Amy Kaufman, a Newton bornand-bred artist who is acclaimed for her unique painted monotypes and paintings. Amy received her B.A. from Brandeis University and her M.F.A. from University of Pennsylvania. She is a Corporate Artist of the DeCordova Museum, a member of the Boston’s School of Museum of Fine Arts Medici Society, and a juried artist member of both the Cambridge and Cape Cod Art Associations. Amy’s art is showcased in prominent private, university, and corporate collections nationwide. She has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout New England, Pennsylvania, and New York. Her paintings are in the Hollywood movie Bride Wars (starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway), and her art was featured in the annual Southern New England Home magazine. One of Amy’s pear paintings was selected as part of the first juried exhibition at the Newton mayor’s office and was used for the announcement. Bouquet, a mixed-media piece, was chosen for a full page in the Newton Art Association’s brochure. Displayed along the fence by the Newton Free Library, her Squares was a juried selection as part of Newton’s FenceART banners. Visit Amy this April during Newton Open Studios, and see more of her work at: www.kaufmanart.com.

Many thanks to these donors to our scholarship fund and supporters of our program Molly Ahearn, Paula Black, Lisa Cukier, Chris Gaffney, Joe Garozzo/ NEWTV, Michael Koran, Angela Pitter, Afkham Salie and L’Aroma Cafe & Bakery, Don Scope, Renee Senes, United Methodist Church of Newton, Sharon Wanunu, our Celebrate Newton raffle donors, the custodians and staff at Newton North and Newton South, and the other kind people whose contributions arrived after the production deadline for this catalog. Donations allow us to increase both the number and size of the scholarships we offer each term, providing greater opportunities for individuals and families in need. We accept contributions in any amount. Thank you in advance for your generosity. She’d prefer to stay behind the scenes, but we’d like to thank our designer, Elles. We think she’s great.
notes To paraphrase the president of that hair club in those commercials: I’m not just a student of Newton Community Ed and a volunteer; now I’ve been hired! I joined NCE as a volunteer in 2014. Since then I’ve helped in numerous capacities: covering our South office in late summer afternoons while Kids programs are running, helping Brenda run our Lifetime Learning program for seniors, helping Ursula with our Celebrate Newton craft fair, and proofing our catalogs and Kids brochures, to name a few. This September I was officially hired to manage the Kids Program onsite coordinators; in this capacity I’ve driven all over the city to look in on our after-school classes at the elementary and middle schools. Many of these schools are familiar to me, but the desks and chairs seem closer to the ground than I remember! Growing up in Newton, I attended the Spaulding School, Meadowbrook Junior High, and Newton South. (Uh oh! Now you can figure out how old I am!) My husband went to Ward, Bigelow, and North in the days of the underground tunnels (two buildings ago). My Mom graduated from Newton High School (when there was only one “Newton High”), and my two children also went through the Newton schools and graduated from South. My parents and I were always active volunteers in Newton, for our PTOs and other organizations. The annual pumpkin sale, spring fairs, and sports banquets are ingrained in my memory. You may have seen me on Election Day over the last 25 years working at the polls; I’m currently Warden of Ward 8 Precinct 2. Or if you have enjoyed Sunday concerts at the Newton Free Library, you may have seen me there as a volunteer as well. I was delighted to join NCE as a volunteer, because over the years I’ve taken so many NCE courses—from Belly Dancing to Digital Photography to our Mindfulness lectures, where I’m learning the value of living and working more compassionately and effectively. I hope you can take chances as I have done to learn new things and meet new people. Who knows where that may take you! And I hope to meet you you in the NCE office or elsewhere in my travels around town. Linda Greenberg NCE Admin Staff

Going Solar: what’s really involved in adding A rooftop Solar System Craig Forman, Instructor You have seen them popping up on rooftops all over town—solar panels. You’ve probably also been flooded by suppliers offering to give you a free quote. Due to generous financial (tax) incentives and relatively high cost of electricity, MA is actually one of the best states in the country for adding a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system. But selecting a supplier, understanding the real potential, and getting the project completed can be much more complex than the solar suppliers portray it. We will discuss the various components of a rooftop solar PV system and what it can do for both the environment and your household budget. We will investigate purchase versus leasing, what to look for when selecting a supplier, system design, financing, how to calculate break even time, and all the steps you need to follow bringing your rooftop solar system online.

NEW REAL LOVE WITH SHARON SALZBERG To love ourselves, we must know ourselves. To love one another, we must know one another. But our assumptions, distractions, fears, expectations, and personal sense of unworthiness obscure these kernels of truth. We yearn for connection with others -- but our minds get in the way, constantly spinning judgments about how we are fundamentally alienated from one another. As William James wisely explained, our view of the world is truly shaped by what we decide to hear. We can train ourselves to change--to hear more of what is out there -- and to listen less to our limiting (and often self-condemning) thoughts along the way. Using core mindfulness and lovingkindness techniques, and other meditation exercises, Sharon Salzberg will guide participants through the process of seeing through layers of habit, whether rooted in fear, self-condemnation or other mental conditioning, to find a truer meaning of love for themselves, their loved ones, and those they don’t know, but with whom they share this planet. This talk is suitable for both new and experienced mediators, and will include guided meditations, and a question & answer session.

Panoramic Photography Workshop Steve McGrath, Instructor
If you’re just getting to know your digital camera and its features, take this opportunity to learn from an expert in this seminar for beginners. Learn how and when to use your camera’s special features—program and manual modes, aperture, and shutter priority. We’ll also discuss basic composition and how to best use light for different situations such as shooting plants, people, extreme close-ups, and landscapes. It used to be that panoramic photos were taken only by professional photographers with wide-angle lenses and other expensive equipment. Now you can create your own beautiful panoramic pictures by combining multiple images with any photo-editing software on your computer. We’ll start by discussing what makes a good panoramic and how to capture that image with your camera. Then we’ll head outside and start shooting. Once we have worthy photos, we’ll work on editing; you can use any version of Photoshop, including Elements or Picasa, or similar software. Expect to leave class with your own professional-looking photographs. Natural Settings: Wood Sculptures Paul F. Angiolillo, Instructor
Simple Sewing Projects Susan Rae Downs, Instructor
Have you ever come across a captivating or charming natural scene and wished you could have it in your home? Painters have been doing so for centuries with their landscapes. Here’s another way to do it: take real materials or objects and create lively, eye-catching works of art. Bring in your favorite natural materials and “found” objects and learn how to design and assemble expressive or whimsical sculptures. The instructor will provide a variety of vintage frames to incorporate your art into wall hangings. You’ll learn how to use basic tools, adhesives, and other materials for creating any sculptural compositions.
Cabinetmaking & Woodworking Garrett Tingle & Molly Baring-Gould, Instructors Once you’ve learned the fundamentals of cabinetmaking and woodworking, you can build almost anything. You’ll learn the proper use of both hand and power tools, safety precautions, and how to navigate in a woodworking environment. Beginning students will learn the basics by fabricating a modest project, such as a bookshelf, coffee table, cutting board, or Adirondack chair—the project, which will vary from term to term, will be decided on by the group with instructor guidance. Returning students will build off the acquired skills and work towards independence as they progress through the program. You supply the wood for your project. A materials list will be discussed in the first class. Emphasis will be on safe and proper use of all carpentry tools for new and returning students.

While Naan is the king of breads, there are many lesser-known but equally delicious and healthier breads that fill the bread basket on an Indian table. We’ll prepare a variety of breads such as Aloo Paratha (whole-wheat roti stuffed with spiced potato mixture) and Gobhi Paratha (bread stuffed with cauliflower filling), as well as snacking breads like chick-pea flour pancakes with dill seeds, and cream of wheat uttapams (pancakes with tomatoes and cilantro). We’ll enjoy all of these breads in class along with a curry and a Raita (yogurt salad with cucumber). A $15 food fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Ikenobo: Japanese Flower Arranging Mimi Santini-Ritt, Instructor The Japanese art form of Ikebana is more than just putting flowers in a vase. It gives a new life to flowers. Rather than simply recreating the plant’s shape in nature, this art creates branches, leaves, and flowers in a new form which holds our impression of the plant’s beauty as well as the mark of our own spirit. The ikenobo school is the oldest of the over 3,000 schools of ikebana, but it has also developed many contemporary styles of arrangements. In this course, you will design arrangements in both the very traditional and more modern styles. Bring a suitable container to class along with a 2 1/2”-3” kenzan (pinholder), pebbles, scissors,

Finding Your Quiet Place: Mindfulness Skills for Children and Families
Growing Up Mindful: Encouraging Compassion and Connection in Children and Teens
Being a parent can be stressful. When your child has a meltdown, or won’t follow directions, it can be difficult to keep your cool— let alone help your child to calm down and focus. Mindfulness can help. In this talk, two mindfulness authors and clinical social workers will share their experience teaching parents and children how to pay attention to the present moment with kindness and curiosity. Participants will practice exercises that they can do to build more harmonious family relationships.
As our own practice deepens, many of us are seeking ways to share mindfulness with our children to prepare them for a world that is often less than compassionate. We cannot protect them from every challenge, but we can offer them the lifelong gift of mindful awareness. Mindfulness builds resilience for dealing with life’s challenges from childhood onward, and helps cultivate emotional, cognitive and spiritual intelligence in place of more stress, confusion and distraction. Dr. Willard will have copies of his new critically acclaimed book Growing Up Mindful for sale at the event.

Michelle Schou & Michael Koran, Instructors You’re facing a tense exchange with someone you’re close to ... a worrisome meeting with your supervisor... a conflict over your child’s behavior... or are “beating yourself up” for making a mistake. And you would like to simply create more loving communication with others and yourself. So how can we more compassionately communicate? It’s all too easy to repeat old patterns: miscommunicating, feeling defensive, and re-acting quickly or with anger. To more successfully communicate we’ll learn skills described in Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. Exercises each week will help us listen to ourselves and others with empathy to discover what we really feel and need. We’ll start with an intention to connect. Our first step will be to learn how to share evaluation-free observations. Separating feelings from thoughts will help us find what we and others really need and lead us to make doable requests. Learning these communication skills will help our relationships with parents, children, friends, colleagues and ourselves—inspiring joyful giving and receiving. To help you get the most out of class, the instructor suggests that you get a copy of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life from the library or bookstore, and bring it to the first class.

Going Solar: what’s really involved in adding A rooftop Solar System Craig Forman, Instructor
Birdsong identification is a lot like learning a foreign language. You start with a few basic bird songs as a reference, then add to your repertoire by repetition and practice. Learn the types of sound birds make, and why they make them. Unlock the key to “mnemonics” memorization techniques. The classes will explore common bird songs heard in Massachusetts and techniques used to remember them. Each class will focus on approximately 10-15 birds. Ample time will be spent listening to each bird song, finding ways to remember it and putting several different bird songs together for comparison. Michele is also leading an optional early morning weekend birding field trip in a Newton Park (described below).

You have seen them popping up on rooftops all over town—solar panels.

Publishing your book: for nearly free! Jerry Reilly, Instructor
Write Your Own Obituary (Or Someone Else’s) Alice Lesch Kelly, Instructor An obituary is an important document—a celebration of a person’s life. But for many people, it is written hastily by grief-stricken family members who lack important information about their loved one’s accomplishments. You can make sure your obituary says what you want by writing it yourself now, in this workshop. Or you can work together with your spouse, parent, or other loved one to write their obituary in advance. Obituaries can be written at any age, and can be added to in the future. By spending time writing an obituary beforehand, you can make sure it is a thoughtful, accurate reflection of a life well lived, rather than just a list of milestones.

In last year’s trial run of this class, we talked to composer Gaby Alter (Band Geeks), playwright Stephen Karam (The Humans), songwriter Joe Iconis (Smash), and others. Prior experience in playwriting or composing is not required, but a general familiarity with musical theatre and comfort playing an instrument or singing is strongly recommended. Grades 9–12.

Newton Summer Stage Dan Fabrizio, Director Chris Roppola, Music Director Brad Jensen, Choreographer NCE is thrilled to bring back Newton Summer Stage, the wildly-popular summer theatre program for high schoolers. Summer Stage got displaced for a few years in the transition from the old North to the new North, but now it’s back in the state-of-theart theatre wing of our wonderful new high school, with a new staff that’s raring to go! Join us this summer as we tell the story of Conrad Birdie, the rock and roll star who gets drafted into the army, as he stages one last publicity stunt in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio. Hone your acting skills, train your singing voice, and learn exciting choreography as we rehearse the much-beloved musical Bye Bye Birdie. Our experienced team will guide you through five weeks of rehearsals, culminating in two
fully-produced performances. In addition to working on the fundamentals of musical theatre, you’ll explore the many other aspects of a theatrical production—design, construction, publicity, and more. No previous experience necessary! Grades 9–12. Auditions will be held in late March/early April (the exact dates are TBA; check course ID KS152-S16 on our website for updates). Registration will open for cast members once casting is done. If you’d rather work behind the scenes, email: daniel_fabrizio@newton.k12.ma.us.

NCE Kids Summer Policies Ages & Grades
How To Make A Full Day
Photos
All grades listed are for Fall 2016. Please make sure you enroll your child in the appropriate class for his or her grade.
Choose the morning and afternoon programs you want (making sure they’re running at the same location) and sign up for lunch too. Our staff will take your child from the morning class to lunch and from lunch to the afternoon class, and you can pick up from there. There is no need to sign up for lunch if your child is enrolled in a class that runs from 9–2:30 or later, as they will have lunch as a class. Lunch is not offered for kids who are enrolled in a single half-day program. You must bring your own lunch.
We may occasionally take pictures of kids in our classes for use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.
Refunds Our summer classes fill fast, so we ask you to carefully consider your options before registering for a class. If you change your mind before May 27, you can have a refund minus a $25 processing fee. After May 27, no refunds or credits will be given. A transfer may be possible, space permitting. There is a $50 fee for each transfer.
Special Needs It is extremely helpful to us if you make us aware of your child’s special needs. Some classes are better suited than others for individual kids, and we can help you choose an appropriate class. However, most of our teachers were not trained as special education teachers, and if your child receives special attention during the school year, we may not be able to provide that level of attention in our programs.
Behavior Policy We have a “three strikes and you’re out” policy. We expect students in our classes to follow their teacher’s instructions and treat each other and their teachers with respect. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will bring this to your attention. If your child’s behavior continues to be inappropriate, you will receive a call from the NCE office and may be asked to remove your child from the program for the day. If after that there is still no change, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no re- fund will be given. We have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate physical behavior. If a child inappropriately touches or acts to harm others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn with no further warnings, and no refund will be given.

Extended Day Our staff will bring your child to the designated Extended Day location and you can pick up there. Extended Day runs until 5:30pm. We will not pro-rate our fee for Extended Day, but you are welcome to send your child for fewer than five days. Please let us know if you plan to do this. Please be prompt; there are no late pick-ups!
Self-Dismissal If you provide your child’s teacher with a signed note from you, your child can self-dismiss from his or her class.
Discounts/Scholarships We do not offer discounts on our Kids programs. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Call us for more information.
How To Find Your Class Come to the main entrance of the school and you’ll have help from there. We’ll have color-coded signs and friendly staff to guide you, and in some cases we may send you specific directions by email too.
Snacks & Lunch
Late Pick-Up Fees
Please bring your own snacks for half-day programs, and lunch as well for full-day ones.
Late pick-ups will be charged as follows: 1st time: $25 for each 10 minutes you’re late. 2nd time: $50 for each 10 minutes you’re late. If you’re late three times over the summer, you will be asked to withdraw your child from our program and no refund will be given.
Allergies Please let us know ahead of time. We want to provide a safe environment for all of our students, so we’re glad to alert a student’s class when we learn of any specific allergies. However, we may have difficulty accommodating you in our cooking classes.
What To Do When A Class Is Full Always sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you.
We’re here to help. Call us at 617-559-6999 or email us at staff@newtoncommunityed.org.
