what’s new? Outdoor Options

There are a lot of fabulously talented art and photography students in the Newton Public Schools! An NCE perk is that we pass by student art displays on our way to our office each day. Occasionally there’s a painting or photograph that grabs one or more of us, as did this cover image by junior photography student Sam Meiselman. This photo was done for a class project in Sam’s freshman year simply called “Wes Anderson”. The assignment was to imitate filmmaker Wes Anderson’s style, which includes specific colors, subjects, and symmetries. The subject of Sam’s photo is Great Point Light in Nantucket.

Meet the Birds If you’re an early “bird,” you’ll love our 7am nature walk at the Cove. Or if an evening walk is more your thing, join us at Cold Spring Park. Our naturalist guide will introduce you to the various species who call these parks home, and you’ll learn how to identify birds in the field by sight and sound.

Summer Bird Walks, page 10

Here’s what Sam told us about his background and inspiration for this project: For me, art has always been about something that exists in the world and needs to be captured, rather than about creating something myself. That’s why photography has started to fascinate me. Nature, landscapes, and man-made creations have always been my preferred subjects rather than people, because there is something intriguing with the stillness of it all. I’ve always preferred to leave my photos unedited, but sometimes, editing enhances the viewing experience. This particular photo was edited to imitate Wes Anderson.

Meet the Trees

Sam inherited his love of photography from his father. He loves nature and science too, as well as history. Sam hopes to have a career in law or politics, but we very much hope he does not leave his camera behind!

adult classes (3rd grade)

It all started when I was six or seven years old and my dad taught me to play chess. Before that, I knew similar strategy games like Connect4, which I learned from my school aide, Mr. Schwartz, who taught me how to think a few moves ahead. When I used the same strategy in chess, I even beat my dad a few times. Last summer, I went to the weeklong chess camp at Newton Community Ed. I really liked it, but wasn’t too serious about it at first. After the camp, I started to watch chess videos of real games on YouTube just for fun. Though I wasn’t watching to try to get better, I was accidentally improving. The commentators analyze the games and point out tactics, pins, forks, and skewers, and before I knew it, I had gotten a lot better and wasn’t a beginner any more. After two months of watching chess on YouTube and playing with my parents, my mom let me do another intensive chess week at NCE. My teacher Ross said I’d learned enough during the summer that I could join the advanced class after school at Mason Rice. I was really happy about that. In the fall, I started going to chess tournaments. I’ve done four so far. I’ve won bronze in the booster section of the Spiegel Cup State Championship Qualifier, and gold at the Boston Chess Foundation Scholastic tournament in the 8 and under section. I was happy to win trophies—it gives me hope that one day I can become a world champion. I can’t really explain why I love chess so much. Maybe it’s because of the trophies, or that I like playing a competitive game with other kids, or that though I am disabled, I can play chess on an equal level with my friends. I dream of becoming a better chess player in the future. I am already beating my mom and dad most of the time, and hopefully one day I can beat the current world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen. Find out how much you love chess Sign up for Chess Intensive this summer (see page 33).

Liz Orlando (page 12)

Ross Eldridge (page 33)

I first met Liz as a beloved teacher of our Young Broadway summer program for kids. What I didn’t know then is how passionate she is about yoga. Liz will inspire you to stretch your mind and body. This class is perfect for adults looking for a great start to their day, but it’s also a good fit for high schoolers in our sports camps who want to get warmed up and ready to play.

What I love about my job: the actual real stories of kids finding a passion through an NCE class. Oskar’s story (see page 3) moves me a lot. And he’s not the only student who has developed a love of Chess under Ross’ capable tutelage. We are ever so lucky to have this teacher in our program. I’m proud to offer his weeklong intensive classes each summer.

Burying Ground Walk

Fractured Fairy Tales

Historic Newton (page 10)

Deanna Mustachio (page 29)

Seriously, I’d never thought about the difference between a cemetery, graveyard, and a burying (or burial) ground (hint: it has to do with a church). The folks at Historic Newton have this distinction down, and they make history come alive. Spend a June afternoon learning about early Newton and gravestone art at the East Parish Burying Ground. I bet you’ve been past there a hundred times and never stepped inside.

In my time at NCE I have met few teachers as versatile as Deanna. By day she is Franklin’s music teacher, but she’s also an accomplished knitter and artist. She’s taught a variety of summer classes for us, but this new one promises to bring it all together. Art, performance, and, I’m sure, lots of laughs.

I love looking at framed art, but I hesitate when I have to hang it. (I always think I am going to mess up the wall.) Also, what’s that thingamajig called? I have no idea; I try to avoid fixing things. Don’t be like me. Brad can help alleviate your home maintenance fears.

Crystal Power

Elizabeth Colburn-Moraites (page 12) I find there’s something magical about crystals. I’m not sure whether it’s their texture, color, size, or weight that draws me to them, but I do wonder about their force. So, when Elizabeth contacted me to offer a crystals class, I must say I was definitely intrigued. Please join me in welcoming Elizabeth, and experience her expertise on the power of crystals.

Fabuleux French Macarons

Jeff Klein (page 9) Colorful, classic French macarons lined perfectly in a row... don’t they look like an edible rainbow? It seems it would be difficult to replicate these delicate baked desserts, but not with Jeff Klein as your instructor. His enthusiasm for whatever he’s doing is infectious. Take a class with him if you haven’t already—it’s a real treat (as are these colorful confections).

Bird Walks

Michele Grzenda (page 10) There’s a flock of robins outside my window right now, looking mighty peeved at this April snow. Like them, I’m looking forward to warmer weather. I’d love to learn more about them, and to recognize other birds this summer. That’s why I’m excited about our two local bird walks led by Michele, who knows more about bird songs and birds than anyone I know. Ask her to imitate the owl that hoots “who’s awake, me too?”

Archaeology Adventure & City Builders

Courtney Norton (pages 33 & 36) Confession: I’m partial to this teacher. Her dad was my grown daughter’s beloved 3rd grade teacher at Williams School many years ago. It was great fun working out these two summer courses with Courtney. She’s excited to teach a mix of math and archaeology through original hands-on projects, and if she’s anything like her dad, you’ll be in great hands!

Art & Photography

Art & Photography Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. Bring a $7 materials fee payable to the instructor, and a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener.

A100-S18 $195 5 Tuesdays @ Newton North 6–9pm June 26–July 31 No class July 3

Intro to Classical Drawing Jack Neylan, Instructor Experience art school as it was in the 1800s and learn to draw like the modern masters. We’ll carefully study the human figure as they did, and we’ll focus on drawing proportionally and realistically rendering our subjects. Working with graphite and charcoal, we’ll begin by recreating master drawings and anatomical studies; then we’ll move to drawing from sculptures, and gradually working towards drawing a live model. If you missed out on art school 200 years ago, now’s your chance to make up for lost time. Bring a $5-$10 model fee payable to the instructor. Check our website for the materials list.

Botanical Drawing

Abstract Painting

Paola Page, Instructor

Paola Page, Instructor

See the world in a new light and then draw it. Botanical drawing is the art of careful observation inspired by the natural world around us. We’ll use flowers, leaves, seed pods, and other organic objects as our subject matter. You’ll work on strengthening your powers of observation, and develop drawing skills to render shape, texture, size, and proportion with greater confidence. By the end of class, you’ll have a small portfolio of drawings you can frame as fine art or use as a basis for a continued edition of prints. All levels, new and returning students welcome.

Find your inner abstract painter. Explore this style of art as you learn to paint with acrylics. Inspired by the styles of artists such as Kandinsky, Frankenthaler, Rothko, and Noland, you’ll experiment with shape, texture, and color using brushes and palette knives. We’ll interpret traditional subjects such as landscape, still life, and portrait, and also explore conceptual themes as well as your own independent ideas. New and returning students at all levels welcome.

Bring one or two leaves, a plant or flower (they can be small), to the first class along with a pad of 9x11 drawing paper, an eraser, (1)2H, (1)2B and (1)6B drawing pencils, a portable pencil sharpener, and a kneadable (gray) eraser.

A144-S18 $169 5 Thursdays @ Newton North 6:30–9pm June 28–July 26

Painting for Beginners Jack Neylan, Instructor Oil paint is a fluid medium; the paint is slow to dry and easy to blend, so you can make changes as your work evolves. In this class you’ll learn the basic color wheel and how to properly mix paints. Starting with still-life painting, moving to abstract, and working towards live-model painting, you’ll develop new skills and gain a solid understanding of this medium. We’ll use linseed oils and stand oils as you explore on canvas, linen, and wood, and you’ll learn the proper precautions when using turpentine mixes. All levels welcome. Acrylic painters are welcome too.

Check our website for the materials list.

A786-S18 $169 5 Wednesdays @ Newton South 6:30–9pm June 27–August 1 No class July 4

Advancing with Watercolors Gary Tucker, Instructor If you have some prior experience with watercolor and drawing and wish to further develop as a watercolorist, join us. You’ll learn design, composition, and watercolor technique through a series of weekly projects. The projects will be supported by tutorials, short videos, and other teaching materials. Class time will include demonstrations, a review of homework, and time for practice. Classes will foster personal expression in a creative and relaxed environment. New and returning students welcome. Check our website for the materials list.

A563-S18 $195 5 Wednesdays @ Newton South 6–9pm June 27–August 1 No class July 4

Bring a small cotton canvas, a paint brush and a selection of paints. Other materials will be discussed in class.

Michele Grzenda, Instructor

Joe Cali, Instructor

Explore a local park with our knowledgeable guide and learn to identify birds by sight and sound. Summer is a great time to be outdoors—we’re sure to see and hear 15-20 bird species commonly found in our neighborhoods, wetlands, and forests. You’ll get an intro to field identification techniques such as general shape, color, and behavior, and learn to differentiate similar birds likely to be in and around Newton during the summer. We’ll stop to listen as well, since identifying bird song is sometimes easier than spotting the elusive creatures. Class takes place rain or shine and starts promptly; no late arrivals, please.

Gelli Plate Printing

Bonnie Lerner, Instructor

Make Perfect Scents

Unearth your inner potter and learn to create your own designs and future artifacts. Pottery is one of the world’s oldest and most widely used art forms, and clay is also one of the most enduring materials known to humankind; it’s one of the only materials on earth that doesn’t change with time. Our instructor will teach you the fundamentals of hand building and wheel throwing. You’ll practice forming cups, bowls, cylinders, and vases on the wheel, and learn techniques for creating pinch pots, slabs, coils, and sculptural pieces by hand. You’ll also glaze your pieces and learn about the firing process.

Learn to make beautiful one-of-a kind prints without a press. Working with acrylic paint, various household tools, and found objects, you’ll discover numerous ways to print with a Gelli plate. Think it’s easy making one of those dancing bears or blinking eyes you see online? You’re right! Join us to get all the tools you need. Start by making a simple drawing in Photoshop, then add coloring, layering, and other effects to create dazzling art. Then invent a cast of characters, draw/paint a background for them to inhabit, and transition them into a simple four-panel digital comic. You’ll create a concept for your own short animation, and learn frame animation in Photoshop to complete your film, adding sound too, if you’d like. For artists and techies alike; no experience necessary. Grades 3-5. Bring a USB flash drive to class.

Apply your creativity and building prowess. Design your dream house and learn tricks of the trade used by real architects. You’ll draw floor plans and build models of your house, presenting your creative ideas for review by classmates. You’ll make drawings on graph paper with a variety of architectural pencils, and build models from cardboard, paper, and additional materials you’ll bring from home. We’ll provide the drawing materials: pencils, paper, erasers, squares, and scales. At the end of the week, you’ll have drawings and models of your creation to take home, and you’ll share these in a presentation for family and friends on the last day. You can’t move in yet, but your dream house may be a reality one day! Grades 5-9.

Take a wrong turn and your character goes down the drain. Don’t like that ending? Then why not just write the game? Join other wannabe fiction writers and would-be computer programmers and write your own interactive online game. Using a specialized program called Choicescript, you’ll learn the computer code you need to design action-packed adventure games. You’ll work as a team to craft the story, create the characters, write the code, and of course sample the finished product. You’ll also analyze the personality type associated with your game-playing choices. No problem if you’re new to computer programming; this is a great place to start. But you must love to be creative and write. Your final games will be hosted on the Choice of Games website for friends and family to play. Grades 4-9.

Have an herbal education and make homemade, all-natural body products. Each day we’ll go on an “herb walk” to see what’s growing right here in Newton, and then you’ll make hand or body lotion, bath melts, herbal oils, and even bug spray. Use your creations as gifts for yourself or a friend, and replace those less healthy store-bought products. You’ll leave with a handout including recipes, and tips for where you can get the materials to have a product-making party at home! Grades 5-9.

With a creative eye and the tricks of technology, you can be a master photographer. You’ll choose a theme each day to photograph—perhaps portraits, nature, or even other NCE classes—or use the Internet to find a photo you like. Then you’ll transform your photos into expressive pieces of art, with the magic of Apple’s Photos program. You’ll utilize Photos’ editing tools to enhance your photographs, and then you’ll combine them to create thematic slideshows. You’ll finish the week with digital files of your work, and a new eye for what’s real, and what might not be. Grades 2-5.

Then you’ll script your own stop-motion animation film; you’ll make a storyboard, design your set, and use the Stop Motion and iMovie apps to create, edit, and present your film. Making the Musical

Critical Writing

Jaime Alberts, Instructor

Amanda Legare, Instructor If you often feel that your ideas are better than your papers, join us and improve your academic writing in all subjects. In this class, we’ll help you define a clear thesis and organize evidence to support it. You’ll practice structuring logical paragraphs, drawing convincing connections between them, and building up to a strong, emphatic conclusion. You’ll also learn to avoid common word use and grammatical errors that can detract from your arguments. You’ll finish this class with increased confidence to tackle your future writing assignments. Grades 9-12.

How do you write a musical? What comes first—the lyrics, music, plot? Join other musical theatre lovers to find out. We’ll study music and lyrics, talk to the composers and playwrights who make them, and finally, write an original musical. In past summers we’ve talked to composer Gaby Alter (Band Geeks), playwright/actor Susan Blackwell (title of show), lyricist Daniel Lazour (We Live in Cairo), and others. You don’t need playwriting or music composition experience to join us, but you should have general familiarity with musical theatre; comfort playing an instrument or singing would also be great. Grades 9-12.

Upon completion you will receive 1.5 credits. These credits count towards your general graduation requirements, but do not satisfy your English department credit requirements.

ACT Boot Camp Summit Educational Group staff, Instructors The ACT is the college-readiness standardized test of choice in most of our country, and it is steadily gaining in popularity here in Massachusetts. It is accepted by all colleges and may be a better choice for some students. The ACT tests math, science, reading, and writing (the writing portion of the test is optional). We are pleased to partner with Summit Educational Group to offer a comprehensive program that covers all sections of the ACT exam. We will cover fundamental academic skills like algebra, critical reading, and grammar, as well as essential test-taking strategies. The class includes an initial diagnostic practice exam followed by 9 hours of classroom instruction. All materials are provided.

In this required course, parents/guardians will learn about the Driver’s Ed curriculum, the junior operator’s law, and the driving skills and behaviors that your children will be taught. The fee is included in the Driver’s Ed class tuition.

General Info & Policies

Policies & Procedures Adults & Kids Access Our classes are open to everyone. Let us know if you have any special concerns or need special assistance.

Age Requirements Adult classes are open to students 18 years of age and older. Age requirements for Kids classes are listed per class.

Changes NCE reserves the right to cancel classes that are under-enrolled, and to change times, locations, and instructors when necessary.

Discounts/Scholarships We offer a 15% discount to seniors (age 65+), veterans, and employees of the City of Newton. The discount is available on most of our classes, but only if you register by phone and let us know at the time of registration. ELL, one-session, pairs’ rate, and other select classes are excluded. Discounts do not apply to materials, food fees, or our Kids classes, and can not be combined. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Call us for more information.

Permissions We may occasionally post your work on our website or take pictures of students in our classes to use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.

Refunds/Withdrawals For our adult, and school-year Kids classes, you must withdraw at least seven days before the class start date printed in our catalog to receive either a refund minus a $10 processing fee, or a credit-on-account minus a $5 fee. The $6 registration fee is non-refundable. No other refunds or credits will be given, unless we cancel your class, in which case you’ll receive a full refund. To withdraw from a class, call us during office hours; we do not process withdrawals by email. There are no partial refunds for student absences, scheduling conflicts, or weather-related closings. See the next page for our Kids Summer Refund Policy.

Waitlist Status

Extended Day

If the class you want is full, sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you. If Newton public schools are closed due to inclement weather, our classes that run in school buildings are cancelled. Decisions about offsite classes are made individually; check your class listing on our website. Classes cancelled due to weather will be made up at the end of the term; there will be no refunds for weather-related closings.

New this year: We have both morning and afternoon Extended Day. Our morning program runs from 8-9am; our staff will bring students to their 9am classes. Our afternoon program runs from 4-5:30pm; our staff will pick up students from their afternoon classes and bring them to Extended Day. Morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up will be at our designated Extended Day location. We don’t prorate our fee for Extended Day, but you are welcome to send your child for fewer than five days. (Let us know if you plan to do this). Please no early drop-offs or late pick-ups, as there is no supervision before 8am or after 5:30pm.

We are Inclusive

Grades/Ages

NCE does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of age, race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, veteran status, or any other category protected by federal or state law.

All grades and ages listed are for Fall 2018.

Weather Cancellations

Kids Behavior Policy It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.

Drop-off & Pick-up Procedures Please bring your child to his or her class each day and pick up from the classroom (Extended Day students, see below). If anyone other than a parent or guardian will be picking up your child, contact the NCE office by email at staff@ newtoncommunityed.org, or by phone at 617559-6999. If your child is in grade 3-9 and can self-dismiss, email us with your permission. Grades 10 & up can self-dismiss with no written permission.

Late Fees Please respect our staff and pick up your child on time. Late pick-ups will be charged as follows: 1st time: $25 for each 10 minutes you’re late. 2nd time: $50 for each 10 minutes you’re late. If you’re late three times over the summer, you will be asked to withdraw your child from our program and no refund will be given.

Locations To find your class, come to the main entrance of the school and you’ll have help from there. We’ll have color-coded signs and friendly staff to guide you, and in some cases we may send you specific directions by email too. Drop-off/ pick-up for summer sports varies by location; you’ll get an email with specifics for your class.

Make a Full Day Choose the morning and afternoon programs you want and sign up for Lunch too. Our staff will take your child from the morning class to Lunch and from Lunch to the afternoon class, and you can pick up from there. There is no need to sign up for Lunch if your child is enrolled in a class that runs from 9–2:30pm or later, as they will have lunch as a class. You must bring your own lunch, as lunch is not provided. Lunch is not offered for kids who are enrolled in a single half-day program.

Medical Attention Except where noted, NCE Summer Kids classes are not state-licensed camps. Our staff members are not authorized to administer medication. Please call our office to discuss any medical needs.

Where did the time go! 10 years ago Ed Hauben joined NCE as our Executive Director. Since then, he's acquired four additional great reasons to retire. Grandkids Mason, Teddy, Greysen, and Blair have joined 11 year-old Sydney in occupying space in Grandpa's heart, and come this June, they'll get more of his time too. NCE has come a long way since Ed took the helm: we’re now the proud sponsors of NAA Basketball, Newton Summer School, and the former Garden City Sports. But perhaps Ed’s greatest legacy is the Mindfulness program that he began here; it has brought many new clients to NCE and has introduced thousands of people to Mindfulness practice, something that’s long been near and dear to Ed. We wish Ed great happiness as he moves on from NCE; we will miss his wise counsel, his wife Jan (who's helped with many NCE programs and has become a member of the NCE family), and, last but not least, occasional visits from those cute grandkids.

Refunds/Withdrawals If you withdraw from a class before June 1, you can have a refund minus a $25 processing fee. After June 1, no refunds or credits will be given. A transfer may be possible, space permitting. There is a $50 fee for each transfer. Refund and transfer requests must be made by phone.

Snacks and Lunch Bring your own snacks for half-day programs, and lunch as well for full-day ones.
