Newton North High School, Room 101 Joan Glinert’s first love was puppet theater—sculpting ‘talking heads’ from plasticene and papier mâché, and creating characters that came alive with dialogue. She studied theater education at Emerson College, then moved to London to be the Creative Director for the London Jewish Puppet Theater, and Consultant to the Education Authority in the use of puppetry for multicultural education. Years later and living in Newton, Joan’s fascination with creating character morphed into capturing real people, in oil on canvas. She is moved by the matured face carved by personality and passing years, and the human spirit in the stages of life: men and women in their prime, children with their moods and dreams. Joan also sees that spirit in dogs, our most loyal of friends, through the glistening look in the eyes, the hues of the coat, the turn of the head, the way the dog holds itself. In her portraits of people and their dogs, she seeks to capture the pathos that binds them to us. Florence, the subject of this portrait, lives in a beautiful apartment in an exclusive part of Manhattan—a strong and very sociable woman, with discriminating tastes. This painting shows her in a casual moment, enjoying the comfort of her favorite chair and listening to the conversation of her guests. Visit Joan’s website at joanglinert.com.

notes I’m Susan, one of the two folks here at NCE who plans classes for adults. I’ve been here four years. and most people would say that’s enough time to get to know a job. But those people would be wrong! I figured that I had the inside scoop on the school system before coming to work for NCE. After all, my husband is a teacher; he and our two kids spend the majority of their waking hours at Newton North, home to NCE’s main office. But I joke with them that here at NCE I never know who is going to walk through the door or be at the other end of the phone. It could be an instructor proposing a new course, someone who just moved to this country and wants to improve his English, a high schooler excited to sign up for Driver’s Ed, or even a parent trying to find the just-right class for her kid. Or maybe it’s Aran, one of the indispensable custodians, returning equipment that was used in a classroom last night. Every day is a surprise here at NCE. I’m just back from meeting our long-time Cranberry Picking class instructor in Duxbury. (How New England-y, right?) You might wonder why NCE offers this class to the Newton community, but I have yet to find a cranberry bog within our city borders, and this gentleman is a diamond in the rough. Tomorrow I’m meeting someone who’s proposed a journal writing class. Next week I’m nailing down a hula hoop exercise course. And I’m trying to find a juggling teacher to offer a one-session class on learning how to—you guessed it— juggle. (Check the Recreation category to see if I’ve pulled that off.) I love the variety of this job; it certainly makes life interesting. As I write this, it is a sunny autumn day and hard to believe that winter is coming, but we’ve wrapped up planning for that season and I’m now working on our winter catalog. This means I close my door and go into production mode (all the while hoping that the current classes go smoothly). For the next three intense weeks, Lisa, Robin, Ed, and I check, double check, and (yes) triple check class details. What you’re holding in your hands right now is what the whole office has been working on since August. We know that in its pages you’ll find those classes you’ve been enjoying for years, but we hope you find a surprise here too.

Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor
Pastel Drawing Cyrus Whittier, Instructor
Drawing is the most approachable form of visual art. It is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, plus more. It is also satisfying and challenging on it’s own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. Bring a 9” x 12” sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener. A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class. New and returning students welcome.
Whether you work in fine detail or more broadly, join us and learn about linear strokes, cross-hatching, scumbling, feathering, and blending. You’ll practice drawing a wide variety of subjects from flowers to metal objects. There will be plenty of demonstrations to guide you along the way. You’ll progress from a restricted palette to full color compositions, focusing on how to identify and adjust the colors you observe. Bring a small box of medium grade vine charcoal sticks, two General’s 2B Medium Charcoal pencils, a kneadable eraser, a Pink Pearl eraser, a chamois cloth, and a 14” x 17” pad of quality charcoal paper to the first class. Intro to Acrylic Painting Morgan Mannino, Instructor
Impressionist Painting Zhanna Cantor, Instructor
Many artists enjoy working with acrylics for its advantages: it can be manipulated for various visual results, acrylics are water-based (instead of solvents, which are toxic), and they dry very fast—so it is easy to learn quickly! Class work will include a variety of painting projects including observational painting from still lifes, photographs, and portraits. A materials list will be emailed.
The Impressionist movement, which included artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Pissaro, developed in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though the ancient city of Rome fell into ruin, Latin, the language of her empire, lived on as the mother tongue in most European countries, and significantly shaped the English language. Because Latin is an “inflected” language and has “cases” the relationship between words in a sentence is far more precise than in English. Learn the fundamentals of Latin: its moods and tenses, and how cases work in an inflected language. From the first vocabulary words, you’ll see English grammar demystified, improve your vocabulary and general mastery of English, and be immersed in the elegance of ancient Roman civilization. Emphasis will be on learning forms by speaking them. Required text: Wheelock’s Latin (most recent edition). Bring the book to the first class.

Awakening Intuition & Opening the Heart Jeanne Mayell, Instructor Sometimes understanding is right under your nose, but only your intuition can separate the answers from the clutter. Join us to learn the art of inner sensing. The good news is that intuition can be cultivated with a little know-how, some exercises, and regular practice. The extra good news is that developing intuition requires opening your heart, which benefits you and those around you. In this fascinating and meaningful class, you will learn how a psychic taps into the intuition of others—and helps them find answers to some of their most pressing questions.

Change Your Brain Jeanne Mayell, Instructor We used to think we were stuck with the brains we had; that if we were melancholy, for example, we just had to accept it. We’d admire the upbeat, positive, Oprah Winfreys of the world, and think, “If only we had their brains...” Now, neuroscience reveals that we can change our brains with simple mental exercises, just as we can change our bodies with a daily workout. We can in fact become open, more positive, and genuinely happier, not by repressing our negative thoughts, but by building up the positive pathways in our brains. Before long we can develop a natural buoyancy in our thinking and, along with it, a boost in our creativity, intuition, love lives, and careers. Join us and learn how to jump start the process to a new you.

Yoga and Your Anatomy Ben Cohen, Instructor Is your downward dog a little droopy? Why can some people’s legs open to nearly a 180 degree split in seated angle pose, and yours won’t even spread to 90 degrees? It’s not all skill and practice—a lot of it has to do with your anatomy. Individual variation in bone structure can cause dramatic differences in joint range of motion. In this workshop you’ll learn to identify tension versus compression and discover how these sensations relate to the way your body looks and feels in a range of yoga positions. We’ll discuss how to know when it is appropriate to go deeper into a pose and when it’s time to back off, so you can better understand and explore the natural limits of your body. The class will include discussion, demonstration, and joint range of movement exercises. NCE Kids FAQs and Behavior Policy We get many phone calls with questions each session. We’ve answered our most frequently asked ones here.
3–5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian. To give permission, please send an email to staff@newtoncommunityed.org stating your child’s name, grade, NCE class, and school.
Q: My child gets out of school at 3:00 but her NCE class starts at 3:15. How will she get to her class?
Q: What happens on early-release Thursdays?
A: Kids typically walk themselves to our classes, but sometimes younger kids are escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school. Q: Who will supervise my child before the class starts?
A: NCE teachers arrive when the school day ends. Our teachers supervise the kids until the class starts. On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (please provide your own lunches and snacks). Q: My child wants to attend an NCE class at a different school. How does that work?
A: We welcome kids from all schools (and all communities) at our classes. Our 3:15 (12:45 on Tuesday) start time is set to allow for travel time between schools. We do not arrange transportation between schools.
A: Our classes run at their regular times on early-release days. Q: My child is in the after-school program at his school. How will he get to and from his NCE class?
A: Please ask your after-school director about getting your child to his NCE class as this varies by school. At the end of the class, pick-up for all kids is at the main entrance of the school; after-school staff will meet their kids there as well. Q: My child is in 2nd grade but there’s a class for 3rd-5th graders that she would love to join. Would this be okay?
A: We can sometimes make exceptions to the grade range listed. Please call us, but do not just enroll your child. Q: Can my child try out an NCE class to find out if he likes it?
Q: I want to sign up all of my kids for an NCE class. Is there a sibling discount?
A: No, we do not offer trial classes.
A: No, we do not offer sibling discounts.
Q: The class I’m interested in for my child is full. What should I do?
Q: Elementary and middle schools are locked during the day. How does this affect NCE classes?
A: Sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you. Also, your interest helps us determine future course planning.
A: School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes. At the end of class, our teachers will bring all kids to the main entrance to be picked up by parents, guardians, or after-school staff. Kids in grades K-2 must be signed out by an adult; kids in grades

Q: My child has another activity that conflicts with the first few weeks of her NCE class. Can she join the class late and pay a pro-rated fee?
A: No, we do not pro-rate tuition for missed classes. However, for some classes it’s perfectly fine to start late. Please call us. Q: My child has special needs. How can I know if a class will be right for him?
A: Call us; we can discuss the nature of your child’s needs and help you make a decision. Q: My child’s class starts next week; where is it taking place?
A: We post room locations to our website when we get them from the school. Sometimes this doesn’t happen until the day the class starts. If that’s the case with your class, please have your child check with the school secretary for his class location. Q: What is your refund policy?
A: If you withdraw more than seven days before the start of your class, you will receive a refund minus $10. There are no other refunds or credits. The $6 registration fee is non-refundable. Q: What is your behavior policy?
A: We have a “three strikes and you’re out” policy. It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. We ask students to use only materials designated for their NCE class, to use these appropriately, and to treat each other and their teacher with respect. If your child does not meet these expectations, our teacher or an NCE staff person will bring this to your attention. If your child’s behavior continues to be inappropriate, you will receive a call or email from the NCE office. If after that there is still no change, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given.
