winter 2017

cover artist: Marianne Karmel There are few things that satisfy like a walk on the beach. In the New England winter it is particularly serene as the crowds are gone and the sun is low in the sky. I am lucky to have a family beach house on the outer Cape, and I have spent many hours walking, and photographing the beach and the surrounding towns in the off- season. This particular photo, Winter Beach, was taken on December 27th, 2012.

what’s new? garden city sports and newton summer school are now part of nce!

Photography has always been a passion of mine. I grew up with a darkroom in my home, and although my path has taken me through several other careers, I have always considered myself a photographer.

We’ve got big changes in store for our Kids program this summer! Find all your sports programs with us—Garden City Sports and our own Soccer and Multi-Sports programs are now NCE Summer Sports; we’re offering sports options for everyone from fun-loving toddlers to competitive athletes. High schoolers, join us at NCE Summer School, where you can explore academic subjects just for pleasure or for preparation for your next school year. It’s all here at NCE. The big rollout is at Camp Fair. Be there!

While landscape photography brings me great personal satisfaction, my main focus and present occupation is that of a portrait photographer. I specialize in headshots and enjoy meeting the many interesting people who I am lucky enough to photograph. From CEOs, authors, and attorneys, to new parents with their babies—I love working with my clients to create images that they and I are proud to share.

About Us

I have raised my family in Newton and my portrait studio is also located in our fair city. Please visit my website www.photobymmk. com to see more of my landscapes, family portraits, and executive headshots. Is photography your thing? We can help you find out. Check out our Photography classes on pages 7 & 8 and see what moves you.

Newton Community Education is dedicated to your lifelong learning. We offer programs for everyone eager to explore—from toddlers to seniors—from Newton and beyond. We are a self-sustaining arm of the Newton Public Schools. When the school day ends, our classes begin, offering access to school facilities for community learning. notes featured teacher: Pam Levy When I first proposed my children’s book illustration class to NCE, I was told quite nicely that they really needed a ballroom dance teacher. “Okay…I can do that”, I said. Life as a freelance illustrator is solitary and sedentary, while teaching dance is just the opposite. Together those two jobs create a wonderful balance. But at that time, I was injured and the dance studio I’d been teaching at had just closed, so I’d decided to stick to art. Thankfully the NCE offer saved me from myself, and eventually I got to teach that illustration class too. I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t teach something—even in elementary school I helped younger kids with reading— but my paid teaching life began at 19 when our ballet teacher walked out on us. I can’t say I was good at it from Day 1, but I was willing to learn. My students at NCE have been very good teachers. They are amazingly varied in background, outlook, age, and temperament, and have myriad ways of learning. My own understanding improves whenever I have to develop a new way to present material; trying to see through the eyes of others is wonderful for anyone’s work. I love working with both beginners and very advanced students. There’s something amazing about watching first-time students’ pleasure and frustration as they explore a new subject. I’m always aware of their bravery: these are people who are willing to leave their accomplishments and egos at the door and be new (and maybe bad) at something. I also get a serious kick out of tinkering with the technique of advanced students—you can throw a million ideas at them without overwhelming them. Another teaching bonus: I get a boost as an artist every time a student comes up with a new technique, a new step, a new way of seeing things. I love it when they surprise me. Their creativity seems to surprise even them, sometimes. I’ve met some really wonderful folks in my classes. Some come back repeatedly and it thrills me to see them every time. I think this is my 12th year teaching Ballroom Dance and Swing at NCE, and maybe my 10th year teaching children’s book illustration. I hope someday one of my dance students will show up in my art class, or vice versa!

staff picks Robin’s picks Mah Jongg

With Mara Nislick Page 37 Wow, we’ve got a Mah Jongg craze going at NCE! We now offer daytime and evening classes. Our instructor grew up watching her mother play, but only started playing herself after she had kids. She took to the game immediately, has since been part of many Mah Jongg groups, plays in tournaments, and has even gone on a Mah Jongg cruise!

Klezmer Music Ensemble

With Barry Shapiro Page 35 We’ve never offered a class like this before and it brings me much pleasure to offer it now. Klezmer music is so joyful, it’s hard not to smile when I think of this class. Barry comes to us with years of experience and looks forward to starting up the band with NCE. Singers and musicians—come join the fun!

Machine Sewing 101

With Celeste Janey Page 11 I am really excited to have found Celeste to teach for us. She comes to us from years of working in the Boston Public Schools. She is a fourth-generation Bostonian, and third-generation seamstress. She literally learned to sew at her grandmother’s knee, picking up needles in their family-owned sewing shop on Warren Street in Roxbury, surrounded by her aunties. If you’ve ever thought about learning to sew, now is a great time to start!

Going Solar: What’s Really Involved...

Animal Art & Fashion Art Projects

With Craig Forman Page 32

With Susan Paquette Pages 47-48

Over the last few years, I’ve been inundated with offers from solar companies wanting to put panels on my roof. Maybe you’ve been equally overwhelmed. I know it’s the right thing to consider, but... is it worth it? How can you run the numbers, weigh the offers, and make the best choice? Well, Craig is a numbers guy and very thorough, and he wants to share how he got the best deal possible. You and I can do it, too!

As NCE program planners, we’re like parents: we love all our “children” equally. Nonetheless, I am going to make a pitch for a teacher here. Susan Paquette always has a new idea, and her projects are perfectly organized yet give every child a chance to shine. Catch her in action this February or April.

Classic Greek Dramas & their Relevance Today

With Tracy Marks Page 38

Animation Lab

With Alex Salsberg Page 41

Something we don’t do nearly often enough is look back, waaay back and reflect on what we can learn from ancient civilizations. Tracy has a real passion for these plays. She brings a wealth of information about the authors, the history, the culture, and even the language. You’ll want to go on a Greek spree after this.

I get it. Kids want technology these days. But I confess I am art-inclined. I love Alex’s class because it’s the merger of the two. We see computer animation all the time now and think nothing of it, but some of us remember the oldfashioned, labor-intensive art form. Get a little of both in Alex’s class.

Beekeeping

The Stock Market Game

With John Cheetham Page 37 You should see what John brings to class: for the second session he loads up his car with his beekeeping suit, an (EMPTY!) hive, a smoker.... and more. Lots more. And all the other sessions? Incredibly detailed handouts with more info than you could imagine about bees. Bring your “honey” and join us.

With Peter Yaffe Pages 45 & 50 Back in the old days all the NCE teachers were community members who wanted to give back. Peter Yaffe is a long-time Newton resident and investment advisor. I met him as a volunteer for Newton Girls Soccer, and later as a guest professional in Nicholas Sterling’s Stock Market Game class. Now Peter teaches his own class with us and takes great pride in educating young future investors.

try something new…

Art & Photography Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. Note: Bring a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser, pencils (2B, 4B, and 6B), and a pencil sharpener. A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

Drawing Without Straight Lines Jeanne Gugino, Instructor

Illustrating Children’s Books Pamela Levy, Instructor

If you can’t even draw a straight line, this is the art class for you! Drawing is a skill that’s developed by practice. Using a variety of media such as pen, pencil, conte crayon, colored pencil, and others, you’ll learn how to create dimension and mass in your art. Focusing on this way of rendering, we’ll draw from still life, natural forms, and figures, as we explore abstraction in our work. We’ll also review some artists that are known for their technique, including Rubens, Michelangelo, Seurat, Rembrandt, and daVinci. Expect to do at least three drawings for homework each week. All levels welcome.

Whether you’re planning a career in book illustration, want to add pictures to your own book, or just love to draw and are curious about illustrating books, join us and learn to illustrate a story of your own choosing. We’ll go through the process of developing small “thumbnails” into more finished sketches for a “dummy” book. We’ll discuss pacing; character- and book-design; and choosing your color palette, medium, and style. Bring a completed story (yours or another writer’s), and a book or two that you admire to the first class. Returning students are welcome to continue their projects in the second four weeks of class. We’ll talk about navigating the publishing market, and, if time allows, we’ll create a finished sample illustration. Expect to do work at home.

Note: Bring an inexpensive sketchbook of any size, a kneaded eraser, and drawing pencils to class.

We’ll explore several options, some local to your computer, some in the cloud, but all are painless ways to set up secure methods to save your data. Don’t delay; start backing up today. Note: This is a lecture and demo class, not a hands-on session.

Programming: Start From Scratch Gregory Baryza, Instructor

Computer & Software Tutoring John Walsh, Instructor

It’s now a given that our kids are ahead of us with technology. But it’s not too late for you to catch up, or at least to learn how it all works. Scratch is a programming language created at MIT to get folks started with computer programming. If you’ve never done any programming, this is a great way to learn. The end result is a video game, and the process is similar to other programming languages. You’ll explore simple animations, and then construct a basic arcade game and embellish it. By the end of class you’ll be well prepared to take on future programming endeavors, and, better yet, to engage in tech talk with your kids.

Get one-on-one tutoring sessions to help you with whatever computer or software applications are driving you nuts. Our instructors will meet with you in one of our computer labs to answer your particular questions about MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint), communications (email, Skype, and Twitter, to name a few), to simply organize your desktop, and more. Bring your laptop or use the computers in our lab. Sessions are two hours long and are scheduled in advance with the instructor. Upon registering, you’ll be asked whether you’re using a Macintosh or PC, and what you want help with. Bring your questions to make the most use of your time! The price below is for a single two-hour session.

Note: No experience necessary. No need to bring your own computer; class takes place in a computer lab. Parents: we offer a Kids Game Design with Scratch at several elementary schools this winter; see more info on page 43.

You’ll also get tips on different techniques and styles for blending and matching colors and fabrics of various patterns. Come on a sensory adventure in this hands-on cooking class, and discover the mysterious world of umami through several umami-rich dishes. Bach: Human & Divine Richard Knisely, Instructor Bach is universally admired as the greatest composer of his—or arguably any—time. Yet, he never established a radical new style. In fact, in his day, his style was considered “old fashioned.” Bach’s genius was his ability to elevate the fundamentals of composition beyond the levels of sophistication, elegance, and profundity any music had reached before. His instrumental, orchestral, and choral music all reflect this. In this course we will examine the fundamentals of composition as Bach perceived them, and explore how he expanded and built upon them. We’ll study his life and music to discover what made him one of the greatest geniuses of all time. Some knowledge of the basics of music is desirable, but not required.

Bridge for Beginners Jori Grossack, Instructor

Bridge for Intermediates Jori Grossack, Instructor

Bridge is an exciting game of logic and deductive reasoning that will fascinate and entertain you, all the while cross-training your brain. In this class, you will learn how to bid a hand, play a hand, and defend a hand. Lessons are hands-on, social and engaging. And, even though you will enjoy yourselves, we will be tackling some tough concepts and there will be (yikes!) homework. Prepare to do the work, participate and be amazed by this whole new world of bridge. You may just get hooked on bridge!

In this class we will test and challenge your skills in three important areas: bidding; play of the hand; and defense. Think of this class as a “technique” class: the better your leads and defensive signals, the better your partnership defense. And, the better your bidding, the better your chances of getting to and making an optimal contract. In this class, we will not stick to a syllabus. You will have a voice in what you learn and for how long. Together we may choose to concentrate our efforts on whatever aspect(s) of bridge we so choose. Class will be part instruction, but mostly learning by doing with lots of pre-dealt hands. This class is ideal for advanced bridge players actively trying to take their game to the next level. Caution: this class may be eye-opening!

The focus of memoir is on eliciting meaning, a theme, an emerging pattern, or a noteworthy incident, from a section of one’s life. The specificity of this focus sets it apart from autobiography, which spans one’s entire lifetime. Autobiography requires greater historical accuracy and follows a more linear progression starting with early years. We’ll identify important turning points, and use them to launch our stories. Then we’ll give thought to the audience we aim to reach, and the impression we wish to leave with our potential readers. You’ll read published memoirs of your choice and discuss in class what qualities appealed to you (or not!). The instructor will offer writing cues to keep your pen moving, and all will be encouraged (but not forced!) to read their stories aloud in class. GETTING TO CLASS

LOCATIONS

It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.

Kids at each school typically walk themselves to our classes, but younger kids are sometimes escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school and/ or teacher. NCE teachers arrive when school ends (12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all other days). On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (you must provide your own lunches and snacks). Kids from all schools are welcome at all our classes. School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes from other schools.

We post room locations to our website as soon as we have that information.
