Thanks to you
Our mission is to treat and care for all our patients and their families as we would a beloved family member.
Our mission is to treat and care for all our patients and their families as we would a beloved family member.
Every day we witness the extraordinary power of our shared mission in action.
Again this year, your unwavering support helped to make it all possible. Through your gifts, you’ve had an immediate and lasting impact on countless lives across our community.
By making Newton-Wellesley a philanthropic priority, you’ve advanced every one of the hospital’s priorities. You have invested in our family of caregivers, helping to build and sustain an extraordinary team devoted to the best care possible. You’ve kept us at the forefront of medicine, from renewing our facilities to bringing state-of-the-art technology to our patients. And at a time of such pervasive needs, you’ve been there for our neighbors, nurturing lifechanging community initiatives.
And we couldn’t be more grateful. It is our pleasure to share this Report of Giving with you as a reminder of our gratitude and a celebration of your vision and generosity. Here at Newton-Wellesley, you’ve made an incredible difference—for our patients, for their families, and for your community.
A healthier world is in our hands—and within our reach.
Our purpose, our why, has never been clearer. And we’re more confident than ever in what’s possible when we work together toward a shared vision. Already, with your support, we’re breaking new ground. The future of healthcare in this country lies in the community and in the home. We believe Newton-Wellesley is the future.
Thank you for all you do to bring our mission to life.
Kindest regards,
Ellen A. Moloney, MBA President & COO, Newton-Wellesley HospitalEvery gift tells a story. Your contributions—more than 3,000 in all this year— speak volumes for what our hospital means to you.
Whenever I listen to the stories behind your support, I hear so many wonderful accolades.
Newton-Wellesley stands apart. We’re your community hospital. Here for you. A trusted place of healing and wellness. Our caregivers treat everyone who comes through our doors “as a beloved family member.” In turn, our expert clinicians are beloved for their warmth and compassion.
The hospital that you treasure depends on your support.
Thanks to you, 2022 surpassed all expectations for philanthropy. You joined our devoted supporters in contributing more than $10.4 million in gifts and pledges. That number reflects a year-over-year increase of more than $2 million, or nearly a 25 percent leap!
Your generosity was simply phenomenal! Together, you helped in countless ways to address the hospital’s—and the community’s—most pressing needs.
Examples are everywhere. Thanks to your support, the Linear Accelerator expansion will be a game changer for cancer care, doubling our capacity for radiation oncology. Through your generosity, the newly launched Women in Medicine initiative is enabling our staff to thrive and provide our patients with the best, most equitable care. With every gift to the Community Collaborative, you’re empowering our neighbors to lead fuller, healthier lives.
The list goes on and on. Every gift made a difference—and showed again how deeply you care about the past, present, and future of this special place.
Thank you for your belief and investment in us.
Gratefully yours,

In Roger and Kathy Marino’s experience, the nurses and everyone on staff at Newton-Wellesley routinely go above and beyond.
At one recent visit, the level of kindness “blew us away,” says Roger. Afterward, they wondered how to reward those who take such great care not only of them but also of thousands of others.
When they learned of the wish for a long-overdue renovation of the operating room lounge, the couple jumped at the opportunity. In September, they came back to see how their timely gift helped transform the heavily used space into a vital spot for surgical teams to recharge.
In their minds, “We have such a high-quality hospital—right here in our community—that is the equal of the best in the Boston area.” They’re grateful to contribute.
Knowing its leadership and vision, they see even greater things ahead.
In our fiscal year 2022 honor roll of donors, Newton-Wellesley Hospital gratefully acknowledges all gifts, pledges and documented bequests totaling $1,881 or more received during our 2022 fiscal year. Pledges are recognized in the fiscal year they are made at the full pledge amount and subsequent pledge payments are acknowledged at the level of payment made in that fiscal year.
Highlighting 1881, the year of our community hospital’s founding, the 1881 Pillar Society recognizes those leadership donors who contribute $1,881 or more annually. Building on a tradition of leadership giving at NWH, members set a standard of generosity and demonstrate that they are truly “pillars of our community”.

After first hearing of the possibility, the Needham couple wanted to help make it a reality. Their family had just lost their beloved Goldendoodle, and supporting Buddy let them find joy in giving.
To them, “Buddy is such a clear symbol of happiness.”
The hospital already had a special place in their hearts. They credit the Emergency Department’s team with saving their son’s life after a swimming accident in 2019. “Not a day goes by that I don’t feel grateful,” reflects Nick. “We’re so lucky to have this world-class hospital right nearby.”
They count NWH as a top philanthropic priority. “With every gift, you’re keeping hope alive,” they believe.
Buddy’s presence is a gift. They delight in knowing the comfort he offers patients and staff alike.

Xuan Q. Zhang, MD
Xuan Zhang, MD, lives out Newton-Wellesley’s mission every day as a primary care physician.
He sees people of all ages in his family medicine practice, steps from the Green Line stop in Newton Centre. For more than 20 years, he’s supported the health and wellness of the community, right in the heart of the community.
He knows both the joys and challenges of the profession. “Newton-Wellesley always makes me feel very rewarded in my daily work,” he reflects. “I’m forever grateful!”
In 2022, he expressed his gratitude by becoming an inaugural member of the 1881 Pillar Society. With his generous gift to the NWH Fund, he stepped up as one of the true pillars of our community.
As his waiting room begins to fill up at the start of a new day, “I’m passionate about my patients,” Dr. Zhang says with a smile.
Year after year, Steve and Taryn Ratner have energetically stepped up as top fundraisers for cancer care, first through Hope Walks and, new this fall, as part of Team NWH at the Eversource Everyday Amazing Race.
In 2017, less than a year removed from Steve’s cancer diagnosis, “Team Ratner” committed themselves to helping “fellow cancer warriors on their own journey.”
No one is ever prepared to hear such news, especially at age 40. At the Mass General Cancer Center at NewtonWellesley, “we found an entire team who were experts
in their field and helped us feel supported at every step.” They discovered firsthand the extensive range of services that patients and families need—and how donations help make it possible.
“Knowing others will be diagnosed with this terrible disease and that we can impact their treatment by fundraising inspires us to keep doing our part,” they reflect.
When Steve and Taryn share their personal stories, they find others are just as inspired to contribute.

When Ed Chang’s family and friends remember how he touched their lives, they speak of his wonderful constancy. He was always kind, caring, thoughtful, perceptive. And he always had a smile.
Throughout a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, “he was always so positive,” recounts Susan Sylligardos, his wife and architectural partner of three decades.
While Ed passed away in August 2022, he had always kept his eyes on the future—including a wish to have a lasting impact on his caregivers at the Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley.
During his many cycles of treatment, “Ed was in awe of everyone,” Susan says. “All the nurses were compassionate and kind. He wanted to let them know what they meant to him.”
Together, Ed and Susan chose to establish The Chang and Sylligardos Family Fund for the MGCC at NewtonWellesley Infusion Center. “We wanted to do whatever we could do to preserve its sense of home and help make it an even more welcoming place,” she adds.
Their family’s generosity will forever be an inspiration.
Each year, hundreds of individuals pay tribute to patients, caregivers, family members and friends with gifts to Newton-Wellesley. The individuals listed below have been honored with tribute gifts between October 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022.

From the time their kids were young, “Newton-Wellesley has had a special place in our hearts,” say Steve and Rebecca Sullivan. Like so many local families, they treasured having high-quality care minutes away.
As they became more engaged through events and volunteering, their appreciation only grew. Wishing to make NWH a focus of their generosity, they were inspired by a budding program in Palliative Care. “Our sense was this could benefit so many families,” says Rebecca, thinking in part of her own elderly mom.
They became early champions of building community support. Yet knowing the program’s value and the vulnerability of funding, they wanted to make an even greater difference. They chose to endow the chief’s position “so it will always be there,” making a multi-year gift commitment together with a gift in their will.
Looking ahead, “we’re excited to think about the impact it will have in ways small and large.”
Our devoted supporters came together to raise more than $1.1 million through an engaging array of events in 2022. After two years apart, 500 guests reunited to celebrate Newton-Wellesley at June’s Gala, raising funds for the Community Collaborative. In September, the annual NWH golf tournament drew nearly 100 participants, supporting our youth summer interns. Team NWH contributed to a record-breaking year for the Eversource Everyday Amazing Race while directly benefitting the Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley. In November, the annual Leadership Donor Celebration expressed our thanks for the incredible difference that donors and volunteers make every day.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital is grateful to all community members and volunteer leadership who support the hospital’s mission to treat and care for all our patients and their families as we would a beloved family member. Members are listed as of October 1, 2022.

As the parents of three active kids between ages 7 and 11, Andy and Casey Bechtel count themselves lucky to have a world-class hospital so close to home.
All three were born at Newton-Wellesley, and they’ve relied on its caregivers ever since. “You always feel welcome,” says Andy. “The culture of the hospital is amazing, which starts with the people.”
In thinking about charities to get involved with supporting as a family, NWH rose to the top of their list.
Along with their kids, they’ve walked to raise funds for cancer care (including, pictured below, as past
participants in Hope Walks). Together with friends and family, they’ve enjoyed the vibrant energy of annual Galas. Andy has stepped up to serve on the Board of Advisors and both the Gala and golf tournament committees.
They see events as great ways to celebrate the hospital and connect more people to the cause.
Beyond what Newton-Wellesley means to their own family, they’re grateful for all that it does for the health and well-being of the community. “We want to give of our time and dollars so it continues to thrive.
Thank you again for your incredibly generous support of Newton-Wellesley Hospital. As meaningful as your gifts are to you, please know how much they mean to the individuals and families that we serve. With every gift, you also lift the spirits of our amazing staff by being there for them at crucial moments.
Your gifts took many forms, each with its own powerful impact. Your annual support of the NWH Fund gave our family of caregivers the flexibility to meet our patients’ most urgent needs. Gifts to capital projects allowed us to enhance and maintain our facilities while also investing in state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that our patients receive the safest, highest quality care close to home. Endowment gifts provide stability and sustainability to programs that are key to the present and future health and wellbeing of our community.
As always, gifts of every size made a difference. Through every dimension of your support, you truly made this your community hospital. We’re grateful for your ongoing partnership.
