SAY IT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A GAY MAN OF COLOR IN 2010? THE FIGHT TO KEEP BLACK PRIDE ALIVE IN NEW YORK. BY DERRICK REAVES • PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILSONMODELS his first time, so John Campbell is a little bit timid. Jacob Riis Beach stretches out under the crush of over a thousand people, the throngs zipping past him in bursts of uncontained excitement. In the distance ahead of him, famed early-’90s diva CeCe Peniston puts the large and comfortably gracious crowd in the mood. All around him Campbell sees fellow gay minority brothers and sisters, circling curiously or congregating in packs of family members, lovers, friends or all of the above. The sense of community calms him and, under that hot August sun, he swells with confidence: this is what it means to be gay, black and proud. Each August, New York’s black LGBT community gathers for Black Pride, a celebration of culture, community and mutual respect during an extended weekend of parties, ﬁlm screenings and other activities. For Campbell, one of Gotham’s premier promoters, that ﬁrst Black Pride left an indelible impression. “They created a series of amazing events and did a phenomenal job,” he says, grinning at the recollection. Indeed thousands of revelers would seem to agree—another blockbuster Black Pride is already underway, with parties taking place at Escuelita, The Gramercy Theater and elsewhere through Sunday, August 8. But in our increasingly changeable society, questions linger not only about the nature of Black Pride and how it will maintain itself, but also about what it will be 16 AUGUST 6, 2010

in the future—if it will be at all, that is. Despite its history in New York City, Black Pride is still a lesser-understood event for many Gothamites. “It’s a time for gay black folks to be ‘black and gay’ together,” says Nathan H. Williams, promoter of Thirst at Roam and Ocean at Splash. “[It’s where we] celebrate both our commonalities with and uniqueness within the larger LGBT community.” Black Pride began as an event called Pride in the City in the early part of the ’00s, under the umbrella of the People of Color in Crisis organization, or POCC. The POCC created PITC as both a cultural celebration and as a method of providing education about HIV/AIDS prevention in minority communities. “HIV awareness, prevention and testing is now and has always been a part of Black Pride,” explains Lee Soulja, a current organizer of the event. “We recognize the statistics and how disproportionately they aﬀect people of color.” The disproportion is striking: as of 2008, blacks comprised 52% of new infections in America. From the beginning, PITC handed out pamphlets and tested as many as 500 people at the event, all while patrons enjoyed live performances by recording stars Deborah Cox and Vivian Green, educational seminars, fashion shows, a family day picnic, and the Jacob Riis Beach party. Still, despite its good intentions, some may wonder why a multicultural city like New York needs a separate Pride celebration for people of color. Soulja likens Black Pride to other subculture celebrations like the Puerto Rican Day Parade. Others look at it as another Pride, another reason for the gay season, calling LGBTers to band together to celebrate their collective contributions, struggles and successes. Black Pride organizers think both points of view are correct. “Just because the word ‘black’ is in the title doesn’t exclude any other race from celebrating with us,” says Jahaan Norvell, an organizer of Black Pride in Charlotte, N.C. “Black Pride is an opportunity for all people to come together to celebrate.” It is a point that each of the promoters interviewed for this story emphasize. The mainstream gay community, they insist, is so large that some members inevitably fall through some holes and it’s up to the leaders of those communities to make sure that none of them falls alone. And it’s especially important to capitalize on the moment for blacks of the Obama generation, who are witnessing a groundswell of community and opportunity unseen since the days of Martin Luther King Jr.

While Black Pride attempts to emphasize the gay black experience for those marginalized by the Will & Grace’s and Brothers & Sisters of mainstream gay culture, the doors don’t close to everyone else; it’s just up to them to come. “We don’t say anything to those who think Black Pride is self-segregating,” Jahaan adds, “because we have [a] purpose to include all people.” Williams further clarifies, stating that “No one is excluded, but uplifting black LGBT people is the exclusive goal.” Despite the doors opened by President Obama’s election and the successes of the gay-rights movement, Black Pride still struggles for certainty. “We don’t have the funding or backing that we used to,” Campbell says with a sigh. “Black organizations in general have to fight to get the money they need.” When the POCC lost its state funding, Black Pride suffered. When the events offerings died down, so did the overwhelming crowds. It is a problem affecting black organizations across the nation. Norvell echoes Campbell’s sentiments, saying, “This year we were successful at creating partnerships, but we still lack sponsorship.” Organizers say Black Pride continues to struggle but they are all optimistic that the event will continue to grow as the black LGBT community continues to find its voice. Campbell believes the community is comforted by seeing blacks in local gay magazines and Williams emphasizes how diversity-friendly New York’s mainstream gay bars are. He says the black community needs to embrace itself because all minority groups—including gays— need a little extra self-love. Norvell reminds us that black pride is gay pride, stating, “The most beautiful part of being black and gay is that I am able to love who I love and celebrate everyday just as I am.” Black Pride started out pretty basic. “Our ambition was to simply make a nice weekend,” Soulja says, drifting off into a memory of standing on stage at Riis Beach years ago, looking out into a crowd of over a thousand people dancing. Soulja promises that New York’s Black Pride will be that big again—no, bigger. “There is still a lot of work to be done,” he admits. As he continues building up its resurgence—mentioning the dogged determination of this year’s committee, the fierce loyalty of the patrons and the strong support of organizers in other cities—Soulja makes it clear that the only thing Black Pride really needs to thrive is the one thing it already has: community. n July 31, New York’s gay firmament dimmed somewhat as Crown Height’s Starlite Lounge served its final drink. The closing heralded the loss one of New York’s historical queer watering holes and, by its owners reckoning, the oldest African-American gay bar in the city. Though less well-known than larger and flashier spaces like nearby Langston’s, Starlite’s welcoming atmosphere (think Cheers meets Noah’s Arc) invited camaraderie between young and old, black and white, male and female. On any given night, the vibe at the intersection of Bergen Street and Nostrand Avenue was brilliantly improvisational. Sassy banter and gestures flew fast and furious among bartender Karen, barback Willie and the regular patrons, while bar manager Tim La’Viticus kept the machinery of commerce running smoothly. Several regulars had been patronizing the bar since it opened in the 1960s, when safe spaces for gays were few and far between. And for gays of color, even rarer. Due to generational and cultural differences, many visitors were still not totally open about being “in the life” decades after Stonewall and Starlite provided a haven for them to let their hair down. vied with defiant discussion over the latest issues in the fight for gay rights. Frank talk was a given. “Get out of my bedroom!” was a commonly heard declaration. Straight ally Dennis Parrat-King, whose family owned the bar, says, “For people in their 60s and 70s, this was their oasis. You should [have seen] the comings and goings. It was like Peyton Place,” he jokes. “We got all kinds of characters around here. Despite a strong effort from the community over the past few months, the bar’s fate was sealed by ongoing conflicts with the building’s new owners, who bought it late last year. “They simply [didn’t] want us here,” says La’Viticus, who speculates their decision could have involved conservative religious beliefs. La’Viticus says the shuttering “is like losing a part of me.” Crown Heights had a healthy respect for Starlite, said a distinguished elderly patron on one of the bar’s final nights. Its closing, he suggests, means the neighborhood “will lose its integrity.” But there’s a chance this isn’t the last

we have seen of Starlite. La’Viticus says he and the owners want to reopen in a new location—ideally still in Crown Heights— to serve their loyal and devoted clientele. “We want to find somewhere else as soon as possible,” he says. But for now we mourn the loss of another piece of gay New York. Starlite was a true friend to the community, focused less on profits than people of all colors, ages and creeds. Take, for example, Willie, a regular from back when Starlite was just one of many gay bars near Atlantic Avenue. (He used to pick up pocket money as a barback.) At 67, Willie takes pride in both his age and his history of survival— a history that was intertwined with that of the bar. SOUNDCHECK INSIDE THE MINDS OF ART ROCK DUO B0DY H1GH ccording to writer performance artist and Billyburg Renaissance man Max Steele, synesthesia is crucial to what he and fellow zinester Daniel Sander are trying to do with their new band, B0DY H1GH. In case you’re scratching your head right now, synesthesia is, according to Wikipedia, (yeah, I had to look it up, too) “a neurologically based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.” So, for example, if you see a number, you’d associate it with a specific color. In other words, B0DY H1GH wants you to feel what you’re hearing. The band arose not so long ago out of conversations Steele and Sander had about music and their shared dissatisfaction with their day jobs. “We were like, ‘You know what would be so much better than this? Playing music!’” Steele says. “We talked about it for a long time before we started practicing. It came from having a lot of the same reference points, and then we started making sounds.” Their influences included The Need, old punk records, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, lesbian singer-songwriters, even rap. The pair is also obsessed with other duos. “Like, Bill and Ted. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson smoking a joint together,” says Steele. In fact, B0DY H1GH’s Tumblr blog features no music whatsoever. Just images: Courtney Love and Drew Barrymore; Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire; Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch in Ghost World. But what about the actual music that’s inspired by these quirky visual references? “Well, we recorded some demos…just to remember them!” Steele says with a laugh. “Every time we practice we record the rehearsal. Which means a lot of conversation and a lot of surprises. It’s been really productive. It’s been a process of editing.” There is one B0DY H1GH track on Steele’s blog, This Is Fag City. It’s a moody, sensual demo, with sharp, almost Eastern-sounding guitars, and Sander rapping a series of choices: “You can make a decision/Or you could make an incision…Go

high or go low/Go up or go down/Go straight or go around.” In a way, it’s all about what the band is doing right now: making decisions, carving songs out of hours of rehearsal recordings. Last month, B0DY H1GH played their first show at Dixon Place as part of the Hot! Festival. But at the moment, they have no concrete plans to play again anytime soon. “We talk a lot about shows,” says Steele. “It has to be special. We gotta be intentional about where we do this. I think we’d be good in art spaces or Laundromats or places where you can think about your body a lot. Maybe bathhouses.” Sander has a very particular vision of what a B0DY H1GH show should look like: “My primary contact with performers initially was being on the same level with them,” he says. “They’d be playing in the middle of the room with everyone around them dancing or something like that. More and more— I don’t see shows that much, but when I do, there’s always a stage involved. So I feel like trying to get off the stage.” B0DY H1GH. Coming to a…floor near you. N

THERIGHTTRACK rina is back and crazier than ever, and the chocolate rapper is ready to party like a “White Girl” on her latest single (along with special guests Flo Rida and Git Fresh). It’s a rather hysterical take on (or should we say read of) wasted white girls at the bar. Though if a white girl sang this same song about Taylor Momsen black girls—oh child!—it would be deemed all kinds of racist. We know all our hearts went out for Kelis and Robyn this week after their sold-out All Hearts Tour hearted New York with two shows! And both ladies will have lots more to love in the coming months. Robyn—in addition to her fantastic new single and video for “Hang with Me”—will release Body Talk Pt. 2 on September 6 and, we’re told, Pt. 3 just in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, Kelis will spread the love by headlining a European tour in support of her fantastic Flesh Tone album, hitting the U.K., France, Germany, Finland and more. And get ready to scream as third single “Scream” (produced by David Guetta) is unleashed in the coming weeks. Last week we mentioned Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” breaking U.S. radio records (with the highest weekly spincount of a record ever, at over 13,000). Well, her latest single— and the title track to her forthcoming sophomore album—“Teenage Dream” broke a record all its own last week. The dreamy new song was added to 87 radio stations over the course of a week—the highest number of adds for a song ever. Teenage Dream is shaping up to be a teenage dream indeed— it’s no sophomore slump! Speaking of pop princesses, Britney Spears is back. Unfortunately it’s not with a new song, but a new fragrance, “Radiance.” We’re pretty sure it doesn’t smell like baby wipes, Cheetos and Starbucks—but we’ll wager a bet those are the smells that come to mind when most people think of Britney. But Spears isn’t the only one detouring from music. Madonna and daughter Lourdes have designed their own line for Macy’s under Madonna’s early moniker “Material Girl.” What’s curious is who they picked to be the face of the label—

recently booted Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen. Madonna was even seen snapping pictures of her for the campaign. Momsen, it should be noted, has her own band, The Pretty Reckless, whose new song and video, “Miss Nothing,” is actually quite good (in a Courtney-Love-if-Courtney-Lovewere-actually-good kind of way). And in an even crazier twist of music fates, ’80s pop divas Debbie Gibson and Tiffany have a Dynastystyle catfight in the forthcoming original Syfy channel movie Mega Python vs. Gatoroid. The brawl goes from a party to lawn to a lake. Maybe Trina has a point—white girls really do know how to party! N

Return on Investment: 70 min. ontroversial Chinese director Lou Ye, whose work has often been censored or outright banned in his home country, is not afraid to show the gritty banality of urban Chinese life, as he does in Spring Fever (Strand Releasing). In this gay love triangle (quadrangle?) involving a husband cheating on his wife with another man and the private eye who ends up entangled himself, Ye infuses images of rainy Nanjing with a certain cool edge—the Chinese equivalent of French ennui. He is an apparent fan of dark, lingering visuals that, although at first atmospheric, soon devolve into just plain hard-to-see. As the characters meander from love to lust, the long, dark shots begin to feel…well, long and dark. Conversely, the acting is consistently both good and believable, as the lovers and spurned exes alternate between protracted periods of subtlety and brief bursts of intensity (whether during a frank sex scene or an attention-getting office confrontation). The true eye-opener here is how the wife and girlfriend, each cast aside, react differently to the men’s love; a very stark juxtaposition. The moment when the victim of an attack lies bloodied in the street, ignored by passersby, is telling when placed in the context of this politically charged director’s oeuvre. Then there’s the weirdly amusing karaokesaves-the-day interlude. Fever, in the end, is in need of a good edit; the characters set adrift within this disjointed story combine to burden the viewer as well as themselves, and all are left trying to pick up the pieces. —Dan Heching

would love to have been in the pitch meeting for the new gay indie Brotherhood (Olive Films). “Okay, so it’s got the tender love story of Brokeback Mountain mixed with the aggressive hatred of American History X!” But you can’t be too surprised by Brotherhood’s rather extreme setting— it comes from Denmark, the land of filmmakers like Lars von Trier and Susanne Bier, who have mastered the fine line between the public’s taste for compassion and for violence. And, like those masters of Dogma 95 cinema, filmmaker Nicolo Donato actually pulls off what seems a little far-fetched on paper: a delicate, passionate and successful modern tragedy. (No happy endings here, folks!)

Having left the army after being accused of groping his men, blond and blue-eyed Army sergeant Lars reluctantly begins to hang around his hometown’s local Neo-Nazi group—first out of boredom, then to prove his masculinity and refute rumors about his sexual orientation, and finally because of his growing feelings towards the group’s second-in-command, Jimmy. Thankfully, the film never excuses the group’s extreme beliefs. (They’re still neo-Nazis, after all, even if they do want to fuck each other). Even so, it’s hard to root for a happy ending. While Brotherhood teeters on the edge of melodrama, it offers a quiet and intense illustration of how hatred is often born out of insecurity (homophobes often harbor unwanted gay feelings themselves) and how we can twist it into a driving force to fuel false ideologies. —Benjamin Solomon

BY DAVID HURST collection of vignettes about ordinary people searching for something, The Transport Group’s See Rock City & Other Destinations has much to admire. First is a wellcrafted score by Brad Alexander (music) and Adam Mathias (lyrics) filled with lovely melodies and smart ideas. Second is a stellar cast that includes the ultra-sexy Bryce Ryness and Mamie Parris as Jess and Dodi, who meet cute in a diner before they head to the titular destination; Stanley Bahorek as Evan, a jilted nerd waiting for aliens to appear; Sally Wilfert, Ryan Hilliard and Jonathan Hammond as an intergenerational trio searching for lost love at the Alamo; and the sensational Donna Lynne Champlin as Kate, a woman struggling with whether she should make the ultimate commitment—marriage—in Niagara Falls. Although See Rock City is cunningly directed by Jack Cummings III in a black-box setting (the cast sets up beach chairs for the audience before the show starts), there’s not enough connective tissue tying the individual moments together. Many scenes are terrific—like Jess and Dodi at the diner, three sisters dumping their father’s ashes while on a cruise, and two prep-school boys discovering they may like each other more than they realized—but their impact is diminished because the creators haven’t found a way to tie them together. Still, Alexander & Mathias are a team to watch, and the show’s fresh score and vibrant cast make it worth seeing. 2econd Stage Uptown concludes its summer with Leslye Headland’s scathing Bachelorette, a funny yet disturbing play about post-collegiate friendship and the challenges of becoming an adult in a superficial, drug-fueled world. Headland’s trio of girlfriends, Regan (Tracee Chimo), Gena (Katherine Waterston) and Katie (Celia Keenan-Bolger), gather the night before the wedding of mutual friend Becky (Carmen Herlihy) to booze it up, do drugs and dish dirt on the bride in a plush hotel suite. Regan invites Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Joe

(Fran Kranz) and the inevitable overdosing and drama ensues. Swiftly directed by Trip Cullman, Headland’s play doesn’t mine any new territory, but does expose the humanity underneath its characters’ dysfunctional façades. The ending is too melodramatic and the idea that Becky wouldn’t realize Regan actually despises her defies credulity. But Bachelorette is still a compelling diversion for the Gossip Girl set. CABARET CONFIDENTIAL f it’s August, it must be time for the MetroStar Talent Challenge at the Metropolitan Room (34 W 22nd St, 212-2060440). Every year, dozens of singers compete for the eightweek jury-and-audience-voted competition , which began on July 12 and will culminate on August 30, when a grand-prize winner and two runner-ups are chosen. The quarterfinals are August 9 (pitting the top 10); the semi-finals are August 16 (when the five semi-finalists will be asked, among other things, to present original versions of the same song), followed by two rounds of finals, on the August 23 and 30. The grand-prize winner receives a fully produced primetime booking at the Metropolitan Room, as well as a professionally produced live recording of their show. This year’s pool of rotating judges includes singers Allan Harris, Klea Blackhurst and KT Sullivan (who will also perform on August 16, 23 and 30, respectively), as well as Eric Comstock, Baby Jane Dexter, Barbara Fasano, Sharon McNight and Ricky Ritzel. The contest’s two permanent judges are Roy Sander and critic Rob Lester. Previous winners include 2009’s Liz Lark Brown (pictured) and 2008’s Anne Steele. N

BY PETER SHERWOOD ld World meets funky Soho at Tartinery, where rustic, thinly sliced French sourdough breads are served as classic open-faced tartines in a modern setting balancing the past and the present. You only need to look at the original exposed brick walls and the reclaimed wood ceiling, benches and steps to appreciate the antiquity positioned in such high style. Such rarefied aesthetics in construction and cuisine might be risky given the current economic situation, but still we were delighted to sit near a towering, recently transported ficus tree. A Sylvain Bailly Sancerre ($13/glass, $54/bottle) was buoyant yet solid, ripe with the flavor of vine leaves. A few glasses went very nicely with the Potage de Potimarron ($8), a thick, flavorful purée of butternut squash soup and onions that wasn’t fiddled with too much. Should you find yourself in the midst of a health kick, there are also fresh-squeezed juices (all $6.50) available to accompany a dinner, such as the Vita Splash with kiwi, apple and pineapple juices and the Sweet Ginger with apple and pear. The Nicoise Salad ($14.50) with romaine, traditional canned tuna and crisp green beans was appropriately summery, lightly dressed with lemon and olive oil. Soft Shell Crab ($18.50) topped with micro greens was a seasonal special done to perfection on a bed of simple, savory slaw that wasn’t murdered with mayonnaise. It was a hell of a mess but I really enjoyed it. Winning Steak Tartare ($15) was paired with potato chips and had a dominating flavor of capers and Dijon mustard, just the way we like it. Sweet, caramelized onions and spicy mustard made the tender Steak Minute ($19) really come together. We also thought the Croque Monsieur ($10) was great, with a decently salty chiffonade of ham, pungent Gruyère cheese and béchamel sauce. And to finish, the gooey and delicious Fondant au Chocolat ($7), which requires an extra ten minutes to prepare, was well worth the wait. N
