MY FIRST PRIDE DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU POPPED YOUR PRIDE CHERRY?

’d never experienced a Pride celebration until 2006, almost a year after I’d moved to New York. I was living with my grandmother in Hollis, Queens, had just finished my last college course and had yet to find full-time employment. Basically, I was that guy. In my fresh-out-of-college and newto-New-York mind, my outfit for Pride was on point! White sneakers, white (super tight) flair jeans (which where legendary mongst my friends in my old hangouts in Portland, Maine), white tuxedo suspenders, a white tank top with laces up the middle, and a white cowboy hat. But I was sure to don more discreet clothing for the bus and subway trip from Queens. Given what I knew of fashion at the time (i.e., color coordinate and accessorize as much as your budget will allow), I was generally disappointed with the gay men of New York and their lack of effort with style. The lesbians, on the other hand, went all out with Pride enthusiasm. I mean, slutty outfits, braids with the colors of the rainbow flag. Some were even topless. And more colored contacts than I’d ever seen in my life (I wore purple ones myself ). After I’d waited 20 minutes for the only thing in Starbucks that was within my budget (the restroom), my friend

“I woke up in Washington Heights with a hot guy I’d met at Hiro. Thankfully, he had a few pieces of mail on his nightstand.” Hudson. People danced to music from portable stereos and mixed drinks into water bottles. Now, there was the official Pier Dance in Chelsea, but that was way out of my price range (underemployed, remember?). A lesbian in a wife beater and baggy shorts got a laugh from the cliques surrounding hers for loudly dubbing this phenomenon “the Black Pier Dance.” After cashing in our coupons for a free Chipotle burrito, Cesar and I parted ways. I decided to pop by my favorite bar, the old XL next to the Maritime Hotel in Chelsea. A drag queen named Jesse Normous was performing opera with a seven-piece orchestra, serving up diva opera soprano. She was dressed as an obese woman, but at the end of her show, she tore off the fat suit to reveal a very trim, fit body. I don’t remember the rest of the night very well, but I woke up in Washington Heights with a hot guy I’d met at Hiro. Luckily, he had a few pieces of mail on his nightstand. I didn’t want to be known among his friends as that tragic guy who’d forgotten his name! After a day full of unexpected events and surprises, my expectations that night were, thankfully, met. N

JERRY MITCHELL HAS HAD a pretty big couple of weeks. On June 9, the out director and choreographer took home a Tony Award for Best Choreography for his work on the new musical Kinky Boots. And this past Sunday, Mitchell served as Executive Producer for the 23rd edition of the incredibly popular Broadway Bares burlesque fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. “The tide is turning. Acceptance for everyone is in the wind,” Mitchell explains as the reasoning behind this year’s American road trip-themed Bares. “We really are becoming the United States/Strips of America.” Mitchell, whohas no plans to slow down anytime soon, says the best thing for choreographers starting out is to just focus on creating, even if it’s just for yourself or friends. “Don’t wait for someone to ask you to choreograph. Get in a room, create what you want. That’s how Broadway Bares began!”

NEXT TIME YOU’RE halfway to Fire Island and realize you forgot your swimsuit, don’t panic. Just in time for the summer vacation season, the fashionable Hell’s Kitchen-based men’s clothing boutique Tagg has opened a smaller Fire Island Pines location right below Sip N’Twirl Nightclub, Tagg FIP (36 Fire Island Blvd, taggnyc.com). And the new outpost is stocked with enough hot swimsuits and cute tank tops for the entire island. Tagg owner Sean Patrick Ryan says the popular gay summer destination was the perfect match for the boutique’s clientele. “Most of the Pines clientele already shop at Tagg in [New York], so having an outpost there made a lot of sense,”

PAUL McGregor’s magic flute REMEMBERING AN EAST VILLAGE NIGHTCLUB LEGEND.

n June 14th, Paul McGregor, owner of the legendary ‘80s drag club Boy Bar, died of lung cancer. He was 78. A hairdresser before becoming a club owner, Paul allegedly invented the shag haircut for Jane Fonda and was rumored to be the inspiration for Warren Beatty’s character George Roundy in the film Shampoo. Paul was, like all great club owners, totally crazy. I say this with loving respect because only a crazy person would give a fledgling producer like Matthew Kasten and his Boy Bar Beauties the freedom to blossom. In the 1980s, East Village clubs like The Pyramid and Boy Bar changed the face of drag forever. Today, when people think of drag, they don’t picture Judy Garland impersonators lip-synching “Over the Rainbow”— they think of RuPaul’s Drag Race and it’s because of clubs like Paul McGregor’s. Gender-bending icons like Sweetie, Lady Bunny, RuPaul, Glamamore, Princess Diandra, Codie Ravioli, Connie Girl, Perfidia, Lulu and Miss Guy all got their start at Boy Bar. Paul and Matthew’s collaboration was occasionally bumpy, but at 1am every Thursday night the Boy Bar Beauties would take the stage and the show would go on to a packed house. Afterwards Paul would pull out his flute and command, “Johnny! Play my song!” and I would dutifully put on Danny Krivitt’s classic mix of “Love Is the Message”by M.F.S.B. and Paul would joyously hit the dance floor for a flute solo. As Lady Bunny remembers, “We used to howl over that nut with his flute, but he really brought something to the party. Most people today just want to be entertained. Clubbers from Paul’s generation personally contributed to the entertainment.” In the 1990s Mayor Giuliani tried to shut down nightclubs by enforcing the

Cher. The Cher. In the hierarchy of gay diva idolatry, few compare with and none top the Oscar-, Golden Globe-, Grammy- and Emmy-winner. (It’s about timeforaTony-winningCherjukebox musical, wouldn’t you say? EGOT!) “I keep on saying that I should probably just call it quits after this year,” says Heritage of Pride managing director Chris Frederick. “Because if the Supreme Court decides [in favor of] same-sex marriage and Cher performs, it’s like, the gays are gonna self-combust!” “Cher is an icon on so many levels,” says JekyllandHyde star Deborah Cox, who’s also performing at the June 30 event capping off New York’s Pride Weekend. “What I’ve always loved about Cher is that she is an actor, singer, a mother, she has a career that

spans generations and she is fearless.” Cox and Cher are just the latest in a long line of stars and divas of every stripe who have performed over the past 27 years at the annual event. Last year, ’80s icon (and now newly mintedTony-winner) Cyndi Lauper debuted a song from Kinky Boots at Pier 57. Mega pop stars like Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez performed at the original Pier 54 location, as did emerging divas like Jennifer Hudson and Idina Menzel. One longtime New Yorker remembers vividly Whitney Houston’s 1999 appearance. “The lights went out and the whole pier was dark,” he says. “Then you heard that voice!” Choosing the divas—and we do use that term absolutely lovingly—that perform each year is an incredibly delicate process.“It has to be someone that appeals to a gay male audience, obviously,” HOP’s Frederick explains.“This is an audience that isn’t easy to please, by any means.You want someone that’s iconic, that everyone knows

and that everyone has danced at a bar to their remix at some point in their lives.” It’s alsoimportantthateachperformer’s appeal transcends generations, Frederick points out. After all, Dance on the Pier attracts gay men of all ages, and from all over the world each year. Guys in their 40s who have been goingtotheoutdooreventfordecadesparty alongside 20-somethings as the fireworks explode over the Hudson signaling the climax of Pride, and the person singing has to besomeonetheyareallfamiliarwith.You’re never going to please everyone, Frederick admits. But in Cher’s case, he says, “even thoughmaybepeopleintheir20sdon’tnecessarily know her songs or know her as an artist, they know her as being Cher.” And who among us hasn’t burned up a dance floor to Cox’s “Absolutely Not,” a classic gay club anthem? With two such tremendous talents, it’s a good thing Dance on the Pier has moved to Pier 26. Outdoors once again this year after the deterioration of longtime

venue Pier 54 necessitated the move to the indoor Pier 57 last year, Pier Dance 2013 will be bigger than ever.“What’s really remarkable about [Pier 26] is that it’s 30 to 40 feet wider,” Frederick explains. “Which was actually the biggest issue of the old outdoor pier; it was just so narrow that no one could really move around. So the new pier is actually, I think, going to work a lot better and allow for people to move about the space a lot easier.” A bigger venue, a bigger diva—this is after all, the Pride celebration every other city aspires to be like. “This is the event out of all Pride events in the country that sets the example of what an event should be,” Frederick says. “I want people to think of the Pier Dance as the prime example of something they should attend when thinking about what Pride events they should go to.” For her part, Cox agrees. “I’ve done Prides all over the world but the Pier Dance is iconic.”—JR

hile everyone else in the country spends Independence Day grilling hot dogs, lighting up sparklers and watching fireworks, the good fairies of Fire Island have their very own, unique way of celebrating the Fourth. They deck themselves out in rhinestones and heels and totter down the boardwalk to cram into a ferry bursting with feathers and synthetic hair to make the 15-minute voyage from Cherry Grove to The Pines for the annual Invasion of the Pines. It’s a blast, but if you think you can just throw on a wig and a dress and not sweat the beat right off your face, think again. Take it from the queens who know, doing drag in the daylight under the punishing summer sun is no small feat. Moonlight is a queen’s best friend and it’s rare to see even the most seasoned nightclub performers don their finery and give face before sunset, so we figured we could all use some tips for daytime drag in the run-up to this year’s Invasion. n Fire Island Pines, Ascension weekend is one of the biggest of the summer season, drawing boys from all over New York—and the country—to everyone’s favorite gay island playground every August. It’s a colossal annual beach bash, and that’s not to mention all the tea dances and poolside events leading up to it. But this year, Ascension comes early, courtesy of three days’ worth of parties the weekend after the Fourth of July. Independence Day may be all about the red, white and blue, but starting July 5 the color scheme gets simplified for Ascension’s Black and White Weekend. But don’t let the monochromatic palette fool you; the weekend’s four special events will be anything but boring. “We are flying in international circuit DJs Dani Toro and Tannuri to spin at the incredible Twirl Nightclub,” says Ascension organizer Sean Patrick Ryan. “The music will be off the charts!” “I can tell you that you are gonna experience a unique weekend because you are gonna be able to enjoy different sounds each day,” Barcelona’s Dani Toro explains. New York-based DJs Hector Fonseca and Eddie Martinez will be making appearances as well, at the Ascension White Tea Dance and Closing Party, respectively. For Fonseca, playing the Pines in particular is a special treat. “I’m rarely on Fire Island during the summer as my schedule is busy with various Prides here in the U.S. and Europe, Ibiza,” he says. “So I’m gonna prepare an extra special set for this—for my New York peeps!” Toro kicks off the weekend with the Black and White Rise Up Launch Party at Twirl Nightclub—which is what they’re calling Sip N’ Twirl’s main dance floor— on Friday night. “I’m becoming an expert in launch parties,” he jokes. The Right Track Bring the Noize, Kids—or at Least Talk a Good Game! By Keo Nozari ikky Ekko definitely took to heart the name— ”Stay”—of the hit single he co-wrote and performed with Rihanna. Sticking around is what it looks like he’s going to do. Leading up to his debut album (on RCA, no less), the Louisiana-born singer-songwriter teams with producers Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Maroon 5) and John Hill (Santigold) on his new single “Kids.” Reminiscent of OneRepublic, MGMT and the poppier side of Coldplay, it’s a moody mosaic of indie, folk, pop and a dash of dance. The track shows some serious promise and the timing might be just right. The time is right now for Rihanna. Still riding high from the aforementioned hit single with Ekko and remixes of “Pour It Up,” her collaboration with David Guetta, “Right Now,” has got up-to-the-minute remixes of its own by Ralphi Rosario, Dyro, Justin Prime that join the existing remix by Mikael Wills. Sure the song is a bit generic, but nonetheless it’s definitely a catchy, crowd-pleasing floor-filler helped by Rihanna’s bright, vivacious vocals. While another R&B pop singer—Kelly Rowland—might be eager to put her David Guetta days behind her. In a recent New York City concert she omitted her Guetta catalog entirely, a bit odd when you consider “When Love Takes Over” was arguably her biggest solo hit, but she still fares well on her new album Talk A Good Game. There’s a lot of good we can talk about when it comes to Rowland’s game: she gets nice and freaky on hot opener “Freak,” after which the mood switches to uplifting on pop jam “This Is Love,” and “Gone” with Wiz Khalifa includes an interpolation of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” (used also by Janet Jackson on 1997’s “Got ‘Til It’s Gone”). Then there’s the confessional “Dirty Laundry” where she startlingly addresses

her jealousy of Beyoncé and what it’s like to survive an abusive boyfriend. That’s followed by “You Changed” which features former Destiny’s Child bandmates Michelle and (you guessed it) Beyoncé. So, things can’t be too bad between them! Overall, it’s a solid, well-worked production of R&B, breezy pop, retro and some up-to-the-minute urban jams that’s sexy and easily likable. Finally, M.I.A. returns and brings it with new track “Bring the Noize.” Just as you’d expect, M.I.A. offers a percussive, bombastic number with a rally-call vocal. It’s bound to be good noise to fans of her distinctive, dark dance tracks. The single is the first off her forthcoming fourth album Matangi. N

OUT DIRECTOR XAVIER DOLAN RETURNS WITH THE U.S. RELEASE OF LAURENCE ANYWAYS, HIS ACCLAIMED 2012 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL ENTRY ABOUT A MALE TEACHER’S MID-LIFE GENDER SWITCH.

he critically acclaimed films of Quebecois writer/director Xavier Dolan all seem to have one thing in common: they give the impression that every guy under 25 in Montreal is, well, really hot. “Correct,” Dolan affirms. “Everyone’s hot. Especially the waiter at Arts Café on Fairmount Street.” Only 24 years old and mighty dashing himself, Dolan saw his third feature, Laurence Anyways, play the Cannes Film Festival’s coveted Un Certain Regard section. Set over the course of a decade between the late 1980s–’90s, this nearly three-hour epic tells the tale of 30something schoolteacher Laurence (Melvil Poupad), who, stunning his girlfriend (Suzanne Clément) and mother (Nathalie Baye), transitions from male to female. It’s a gorgeously assured, stylish work complemented by cool production design and a superb, impressive soundtrack featuring Visage, The Cure, Duran Duran and Jean Leloup among many others. “Record labels were very nice,” Dolan shares. “Surprisingly enough, the toughest transactions were with small, anonymous bands from Germany. At some point we took the phone and just said to them, ‘Guys, we’re on the same page here, please don’t act like the Stones. We know you record everything in a pool somewhere in Eastern Europe.’” A multitasker, Dolan also headed up the film’s wardrobe department—and admits it wasn’t easy to find genuine ’80s and ’90s clothing. “Since the hipsters stole every piece of clothing involving glitter and shoulder pads, nothing is left for the people who actually need it,” he laments. “But I could still find stuff in vintage shops or Value Villages—they’re big stores here in Quebec where people ditch their old shit and it’s sold for nothing.” Born in 1989 in Montreal, Dolan got his start in showbiz as a child actor and went on to dub character voices for Quebec’s French-language versions of film and TV series including Twilight, Harry Potter and South Park. His directorial debut came in 2009 with the semi-autobiographical I Killed My Mother, while 2010’s follow-up, Heartbeats, chronicled a gay boy and his fruit

fly’s war over a sexually ambiguous Casanova. Laurence Anyways differs from those first two efforts in a couple of notable ways. Dolan himself starred in his first two features, but, feeling there was no organic on-camera role for him, stayed exclusively behind the scenes this time around. For that matter, the film’s protagonists are fully formed adults—for the most part, anyway. “It was the logical evolution in terms of storytelling for me,” he notes. “I shot I Killed My Mother when I was 19, Heartbeats when 20, and Laurence Anyways when I was 22. My characters grow with me, it seems. And those three movies were always meant to be a trilogy on impossible love at various ages—teenagehood, adulthood, etc.” Dolan says that the first seed for Laurence Anyways’ story was planted back while shooting I Killed My Mother. A wardrobe assistant revealed that an exboyfriend told her he wanted to become a woman. Inspired, Dolan sat himself down and wrote 30 pages of the script that evening. While preparing to make the film, Dolan briefly consulted with a male-tofemale transsexual about several issues, including the physical effects of taking hormones. She convinced him to scrap the script’s original ending, in which Laurence committed suicide. “The woman told me she thought it was a negative message to send to the LGBT community,” he recalls. “I assume she was right, and we ended up changing it for a ton of other reasons anyway.” A sage decision for sure: Laurence Anyways ultimately snagged Cannes’ Queer Palm award. Dolan also recently “won” a new title of sorts—a critic mused that the young auteur may be the “new Leos Carax,” referring to the eccentric French director of last year’s Holy Motors. “I have just seen Carax’s Holy Motors, which I thought was genius,” Dolan admits. “I loved it so much I almost shat my pants outta jealousy. [But] I feel either embarrassed about associations with other directors, or irked. Every director has the ambition to be unique, even if it takes some time to find your own voice. Jean Cocteau said, ‘Everything has been done…except by me.’” N

I’m So Excited Time Investment: 95 min. Return on Investment: 90 min. t’s hard to place Pedro Almodóvar into any one genre. His last film, The Skin I Live In, was equal parts revenge flick, horror film and class melodrama. So don’t expect pure slapstick comedy from I’m So Excited, his new film set primarily aboard an airplane. The film, which contains plenty of camp, is also secretly a commentary on contemporary Spanish politics—and may contain more sex than any other Almodóvar film. I’m So Excited assembles many of Almodóvar’s regular players, including Cecilia Roth, Lola Duenas, Javier Camara, Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, and traps them inside the confines of first class. There, as passengers, flight attendants and the pilots, they navigate turbulent skies filled with heartbreak, political intrigue, blackmail, secret identities, murder, sex and possibly even death. The result, at least on the surface, plays like the gayest production of Murder on the Orient Express ever produced. Most Almodovar films are a pleasure to watch, though the director never makes it easy for his viewer. But I’m So Excited is by far one of his most entertaining. The gags—everything from from a broken intercom that forces everyone to air their dirty laundry with the whole plane to an accidental drugging that leads to a plane-wide orgy— are some of the most creative and memorable in recent memory. Then again, only Almodovar could make a good film that includes the line “[It] smelled of death, but I thought it was farts.” —Benjamin Solomon

At age 24, the openly gay writer/director/actor already has his third film under his belt, the transgender love story Laurence Anyways (Breaking Glass Pictures). But watching Anyways, his most mature film to date, it’s also clear Dolan knows he is talented. Anyways is a child dressed like a 40-year-old; a movie filled with imagery, dialogue and music that a 24-year-old assumes a mature, experienced, world-wise director would choose. Yet, at it’s core, there is an authenticity missing from his sprawling opus. After all, it’s set in the ’90s, a decade Dolan is barely old enough to remember. Returning to the theme of love-oversocietal norms Dolan last explored in

Heartbeats, Anyways charts the relationship of Montreal writer, Laurence (Melvil Poupaud) and the love of his life, Frederique (Suzanne Clément) before, during and after the revelation that he is trans. Laurence is not gay and wants to stay with Fred and the two struggle for 10 years to let their intense love of each other triumph over gender roles. Though the film touches on the issues of transition (workplace inequality, violence, the starring) Dolan uses Laurence’s struggle mostly as a plot device to explore the limits of love. It’s a sweeping epic despite it’s narrative shortcomings that’s filled with stylish visuals and music. (As he’s proven before, Dolan is a master soundtrack builder.) It’s a talent that attracted executive producer Gus Van Sant, possibly seeing a young version of himself in Dolan: a man filled with style, searching for substance. —BS

There are people around the world who dream of this opportunity. PIXIE avENTura: Yeah, look at us now! WW: [laughs] And the way my character gets introduced, it’s so fabulous. A pinlight and an announcer? “Ladies and gentlemen!” Holy crap! aM: It’s a big accomplishment. It’s special. WW: It’s really special. Mf: Congratulations. WW: I told my husband he’s gonna cry. aM: And Broadway stops for nothing. WW: They don’t stop for anything. And furthermore, the scenes won’t stop if I stumble, but all my peers will be looking at me with a side eye and I’m not having it. aE: I’m sure you’ll be amazing, though. WW: I think I have it. And let them eat cake. [laughs] aE: What do you think it’s going to feel like that first night when you step on stage? WW: Well, I know just about everybody who’s going to be in the first five rows, because they went behind my back and they purchased the tickets and I’ve been so busy that I wasn’t checking like a Broadway website to see when tickets are available…That’s going to get me emotional. See, it’s not going to make me fuck up my—screw up my lines, it’s going to make me cry, if I see my son; my husband; Roberta, my assistant; David, my executive producer. You know, Kenny the cameraman. I just need to get out there and do it. Pa: It’ll take over, girl. You’ll see that spotlight and it’ll all disappear. WW: Yes. That’s what I’m counting on. Pa: With that orchestra behind you? You’ll feel like a diva! aM: And you’re preparing for it.

WW: I am. I have a vocal coach downtown. I go to the Ambassador Theater for two and three hours six days a week. Here I am on Saturday; I’ll be back tomorrow for two and a half hours. My production company, Wendy Williams Production, we just sold our first project, which is to the TV Guide Network. We don’t start filming till Monday, but you know The Making of Wendy in Chicago on Broadway or whatever we’re going to title it. It’s gonna be a one-hour special. aE: Do you feel like you can’t get busy enough? I mean, how do you do it? WW: I like spurts of busy. There are spurts of busy. For the most part, when things run regular, it’s not a simple life, but it’s a manageable life. I’ve got a fabulous staff of people that pull everything—my producers, everyone—pulls everything together. And I have the luxury of working with my husband, so when I leave the show, 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, on a regular [day], I go back to Jersey. I become Mrs. Hunter…I make a fresh meal three days a week. aE: That’s more than I can say. WW: Yeah, meatloaf, vegetables, maybe a mashed potato or something like that. And I am busy with my son and homework. I’m at home. You know, you have to take care of yourself before you take care of anyone else. I find that the road to where I am today is littered with…

WW: …people that I thought were my friend. Or I thought could handle me having this talk show and still treat me like Wendy. You know in real life…I’m very understated. I know I don’t seem it. First of all, there’s only so much understating that a 5’ 11” woman can do with boobs and a little curve and wigs. Now, I wear my wigs because my hair has thinned from thyroid disease. You see, now the hair that you have on your head, my hair is thicker than your hair, but not thick enough… aE: Thicker than my [thinning] hair? WW: Yes, but not much. That wasn’t a read. Pa, Mf, aM: [laughs] WW: Thicker than your hair, but it’s not crazy. Like if I was a shorter girl and was maybe a schoolteacher or something normal, I could [wear] my hair tastefully at the shoulder and wear it thin, you know, put a little [product] in to thicken it up, but I’m a tall woman and I’ve got a big personality and I look like a snowman with little tiny hair. So I wear the wigs. But back to friends and things like that. You’d be surprised how un-busy you can really be if you learn to weed out some of the distractions and some of the toxicities in your life. Not that I’m Marlene Dietrich, but I really do like my privacy. Do you understand? aE: Oh, definitely. Is this a newer development or have you always been like this?

WW: Oh, no. I’ve always been like this. All my life. But you know, all of my adult life I’ve had a degree of celebrity. aE: You [draw] attention. You’ve courted some controversy in the past, but I don’t think that was necessarily your intention. WW: Thank you. Thank you! aM: You speak your mind. WW: But I’m not a mean-spirited person. As a matter of fact, I’m probably one of the more sensitive people you know. Oh, oh. [tears up] Mf: Would you like a Q-tip? WW: Please. Ah. [pause] And I don’t have my period! [laughs] Pa: It’s all this feminine energy. aM: Ha! WW: I am not a mean person. I’d rather walk away than dress you down and really read you the way I know I could, honey. ———————————————— aE: Let’s talk about something less personal. Are you a method actor? WW: What is that? Pa, Mf, aM: [laughs] aM: Like when you spoke like Mama, you were like almost in character. WW: No, that was a mistake. That’s not me. I don’t know what my acting style is. I just do. I like acting, but I’m a talk show host first and foremost. aE: Do you feel like you have to act when you do the talk show? WW: Never. Oh, it’s so comfortable out there. I do bite my tongue. But I bite my tongue in my head. aE: Well, everybody does. WW: Everybody should, not everybody does. I don’t feel like our show would be the same if it wasn’t live. aE: You’ve done some film, too. WW: Yeah. aE: Do you feel more comfortable in front of the camera or on stage? WW: Right now, my sweet spot is in front of the camera. However, I do have a production company and I didn’t do that to propel me; I formed it because I want to be behind the camera. I ain’t gonna be on TV for the rest of my life. This is beautiful for right now, but you’ve always got to be at least two steps ahead of yourself. At least that’s the way I’ve planned my entire life. I call it Futuristic Vision. And I’ve called it that ever since I was in the sixth grade envisioning how free I’d be when I escape from those people, who I call my parents. aE, aM, Mf, Pa: [laughs] WW: You know how it was growing up. I think that my connection with the gay community is simply being an outcast and feeling weird about the you that you’re in

until you learn how to live gloriously within your skin. I’ve always been the outcast. Too tall, or the black one, or the fat one, or— even from my own people—white girl Wendy. I don’t have time to fight back, so …I’d go to the family room and watch TV. We all go through something. Friday night I wouldn’t go out with friends, [my mom would say,] “That’s why you have no friends.” Really? I’ll show you. I’ll show you all. And that’s what my entire career has been. aE: Do you still have a relationship with your parents? WW: We get along fabulously. ———————————————— aE: What do you hope is your legacy? WW: Well, the majority of my legacy really does lie in my husband and my son. My husband has devoted his career to being my manager and he’s one of the executive producers on the show…He came in as somebody who saw that I had potential and instead of wanting to take advantage of it, wanted to actually help, authentically. That was 19 years ago. aE: How did you meet? WW: At the club, honey. Don’t be fooled, you can find love in the club. But I will say this, when I’m finished, I would like to have Wendy Williams Production set up so boss that my husband is just doin’ things. I would also like to be able to give my son a world-class education, not just at a great university, but in the school of hard knocks. There’s just so many things I want to set up before I say, “Ok. By David Hurst t’s rare that a new American play is actually about something. But playwright Daniel Pearle’s A Kid Like Jake takes on a whopper of a subject with style and clarity in a new LCT3 production. You see, little 4-year-old Jake (whom we never see in the play) is a “special” child who’s filled with imagination and self-possessed of opinions he’s eager to share. He also wants to be a fairy princess, specifically Cinderella, which has thrown his parents, Alex and Greg, terrifically portrayed by Carla Gugino and Peter Grosz, into a tailspin as they navigate the treacherous waters of applying for private schools now that Jake has outgrown preschool. Jake’s preschool teacher Judy, portrayed with biting realism by Caroline Aaron, gently encourages Alex and Greg to play up Jake’s “specialness” on their applications, while also trying to get them to acknowledge that his gender-variant experimentation is clearly symptomatic of something more profound going on. Insightfully directed by Evan Cabnet, A Kid Like Jake spends too much time on the tribulations of the application process and Alex and Greg’s strained relationship when it should be tackling how they’re going to raise a son who may be transgendered or gay. But much of the script rings authentically true as the audience eavesdrops on a couple as they attempt to remain open-minded and do the right thing for a son whose evolving sense of self and behavior will require major readjustments on both their parts. Daniel Sullivan’s sensational production of The Comedy of Errors is the first of two offerings of free Shakespeare in the Park this summer, and it’s an unmitigated delight! Trimmed and streamlined to a tight, intermission-less 90 minutes, this Comedy boasts two bravura comic performances from Jesse

Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) and Hamish Linklater, as well as a host of other pros like Jonathan Hadary, Skip Sudduth, Emily Bergl, Heidi Schreck, Robert Creighton and Becky Ann Baker. Ferguson and Linklater play two sets of identical twins, Dromio and Antipholus of Syracuse, and Dromio and Antipholus of Ephesus, respectively, that were separated at birth by a storm—the kind of contrivance that Shakespeare loved and that was his stock in trade for these kinds of trifles. Ferguson plays the two Dromios and Linklater the two Antipholuses, with comic confusion and mayhem ruling the day for the show’s swift duration. What makes this Comedy particularly appealing is Sullivan’s decision to set it in the 1940s, with the terrific music of that era providing a light and lively ambience throughout the entire production. The show starts with toe-tapping music and a troupe of fantastic dancers who start jitterbugging and never seem to stop. The quick scene changes are handled by the same dancers, which allows the energy to keep flowing at top-wattage while Ferguson and Linklater grab a few seconds of rest offstage. Once the mistaken identities are sorted out and the lovers reunited, the entire company launches into a jitterbug of their own for a curtain call that will send you dancing out of Central Park feeling joyous and alive. That it’s free makes it all the more unbelievable. The latest entry in the Off-Broadway vanity production genre is James Wesley’s Unbroken Circle, which opened last week at St. Luke’s Theater on Restaurant Row. Playing only on Wednesdays, Circle is as well intentioned as it is tedious. Influenced equally by sitcoms and after-school specials, Wesley’s intergenerational family drama tackles the serious issues of incest and childhood sexual abuse—but through a veil of one-liners and Southern accents. Only Anika Larsen, in a subtle and understated performance, creates anything resembling an authentic character. As the second act progresses, revelations come fast and furious, but melodrama has taken over where shock should resonate. Eggs are aplenty, served poached, stuffed with cream cheese and salmon or as frittatas filled with zucchini and a variety of vegetables. Eggs benedict are on hand with Canadian bacon or crab cakes, as are maple syrupy pancakes with bacon and sausage. Now, the only caveat about that unlimited beverage deal is that there is a two-hour table limit. So drink up, boys! Though the fresh-made chips and salsa are reason enough to cozy up to the bar. alongside buttery whipped mashed potatoes. Short ribs are beautifully braised with simmered onions and tart, luscious celery root purée surrounded by an au jus drizzle. The rollicking weekend brunch often serves as a setting for the hung-over homo. The gym boys know that Energy Kitchen (307 W 17th St, 212-645-5200, EnergyKitchen.com) is the place to go to slim down or bulk up. It’s mostly a take-out business, but there are small tables to eat in, too. Whether we’ve been working out or just sportily clad, the egg whites omelet with spinach and mushrooms is a great, highpowered morning starter. Diced asparagus salad in a vinaigrette dressing is guiltfree any time of day. Turkey chili is satisfyingly rich and meaty despite the low calorie count.
