eeing barrier after barrier on the way to full marriage equality in the U.S. fall in such unexpectedly rapid succession over the past few years has been undeniably thrilling. I celebrated along with everyone else when gay marriage was legalized in New York two years ago, and again this June when DOMA and Prop 8 bit the dust. But I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel a little bit like somebody else’s party. Like, I suspect, a lot of my generation, I have a complicated relationship with the institution of marriage. I’m not sure if it’s something I believe in. So while I’m thrilled for all the same-sex couples who so desperately wanted to get married, the DOMA repeal just didn’t really feel like it had anything to do with me. Then I started joking with my British friend about marrying him for a green card. I think the first time I offered to marry Nils was a year or two ago. Back then it seemed like a long shot. A gay dude could say something like “I’d totally marry you so you can get a green card” to his best gay friend back then and not have to worry about anyone calling his bluff. Also, back then I wasn’t really joking. I’d known Nils for a few years at that point and I was hopelessly, dewily smitten. In my crush-struck state, I would think in id-

“Every part of me bridled like a spooked horse.” I’d offered to marry him. His visa expires next year and with the demise of DOMA he’s got a shot at staying in the U.S. This thing that I meant with all my heart when it wasn’t a real possibility was actually an option now. And every part of me bridled like a spooked horse. There’s the practical part of me that’s freaked out about the actual ramifications of legally binding myself to someone. Then there’s part of me that wonders if maybe this is the only opportunity to get married that I’m ever going to have. And it turns out this is the unexpectedly, improbably romantic part of me. Nils tells me that we’d just get hitched at a courthouse or whatever, and, suddenly denied the wedding I never thought I wanted, I’m devastated. Not because I want some fairytale ceremony but because, if I’m getting married, I realize, I want to share that with my family and friends. I want them gathered around me to celebrate something real and special. I used to imagine having that with Nils, but now the reality of what marrying him would mean—or what it wouldn’t mean—has finally driven home the fact that I’m never going to have that connection with him. I used to scoff at all the romantic fools jumping into marriages just because they can now. But it took not jumping into a sham marriage to make me realize just how much of a romantic I really am. N

iotic romantic comedy terms. I’d imagine marrying him, for the green card at first, but then as the months would go by our quirky marriage of convenience would shift into something deeper and richer. Flash forward a couple years and my relationship with Nils actually has deepened and matured into one of the most important friendships in my life. So it was pretty disconcerting when, a couple weeks ago, he brought up the fact that

“COFFEE DATES ARE THE best first dates because they can last five minutes or five hours. Little Skips (941 Willoughby Ave, Brooklyn, LittleSkips.com) which I was the mayor of on Foursquare while I lived in Bushwick was my own little corner to meet strangers offline at. Since the cafe is the notorious epicenter of Bushwick, everyone uses it as a reference point for the local chill lifestyle. It’s hot hipstar boy atmosphere is perfect for those kids who cant cook and survive off a fancier type of deli sandwich. This dependence on a good lunch makes it a prime spot for locals to run into one another in a relaxed loft-style atmosphere. It’s almost like my second home! With nowhere really else to hang, Skips is also a groovy place for a casual fashion show as you’re sure to spot others dressing up for no reason other then going to get coffee. Situated beneath the thunderous M train track, Skips is really the only alternative cafe in the neighborhood east of the Morgan stop for boys who used to take the L but now only can afford to take the J.” —Taylor Derwin, 26-year-old writer residing in Bed-Stuy

Musical Rennaisance can serious queer musicals be taken seriously?

hen it comes to telling gay stories, the stage has always been a far more welcoming place than many other mediums. However, one form of theater that remains persistently rare is the serious queer musical. Max Vernon, a young out composer and performer, recently attempted to create just such a piece with The View UpStairs, a musical portraying the 1973 arson attack at New Orleans’ UpStairs Lounge, the deadliest LGBT massacre in American history. He admits that attempting to tackle any serious topic with a musical can still be a challenge. “I think the bigger obstacle is not being dismissed as frivolous, but being written off as lame, embarrassing, etc. When I tell people I write musicals, I think what people immediately assume or imagine my work to sound like is the polar opposite of what I actually do.” Vernon says that the last queer musical that truly moved him was Hedwig and The Angry Inch, which premiered in 1998. On July 31, Justin Vahala’s musical What Leaves The Wind Has Laid premieres at Dixon Place. (Full discolsure: Justin is my boyfriend.) It portrays two male lovers meeting in a magical bathhouse and incorporates both folk and Portugese Fado music. He says he was purposefully trying to subvert some of the past clichés of musical theater with the new piece. “I think younger gay audiences are definitely open to the idea of musical theater as a serious medium,” he explains. “Theatrical experiences are taking the traditions of the genre and playing with them a bit. I'm seeing people use different musical styles, incorporate video or breaking away from a linear plot.” Last summer, Dan Fishback’s musical The Material World explored topics ranging from technology to socialism through a queer lens as part of Dixon Place’s Hot Festival. He believes the current lack of

THE HOMES IN ARCHITECT CHRISTOPHER RAWLINS NEW BOOK, FIRE ISLAND MODERNIST: HORACE GIFFORD AND THE ARCHITECTURE OF SEDUCTION, ARE PART VOYEURISTIC FANTASIES, PARTY DEMURE BEACH DWELLINGS AND ALL CLASSIC FIRE ISLAND.

HIS SUMMER, ARCHITECT CHRISTOPHER RAWLINS published his 204-page, coffee-table-sized exploration of Horace Gifford’s Fire Island design work, Fire Island Modernist: Horace Gifford and the Architecture of Seduction. Gifford was the mastermind behind some 70 homes that transformed the appearance and culture of the Pines from the 1960s to the early ’80s—but if it weren’t for a few select individuals, his legacy might have been lost. When Rawlins first started coming to the Pines, he would spend his days wandering the boardwalk and noting certain homes that all seemed to have a similar appeal. “Being nosey, I started knocking on people’s doors and they all turned out to be by this guy named Horace Gifford, who I’d never heard of,” Rawlins explains. As a student of mid-century architecture, he immediately wanted to know more. In 2009, he stumbled upon Gifford’s archive of drawings and slides in a garage in suburban Long Island.“I felt like I’d found a portal to a lost world,”Rawlins recalls.“That’s why the book also became less of an architectural monograph and more of a social history of this eccentric character and these amazing houses he built.”Later this summer, as a supplement to his book, Rawlins will be hosting guided tours of Gifford’s homes in the Pines. On a recent Saturday, we asked him to give us a preview.

riginally built in 1975 for lawyer Lawrence Bonaguidi, this glassencased home was one of Gifford’s later creations. Although the structure is now surrounded by dense forestry, in order to understand the way that Gifford intended the house to be viewed at the time he designed it you’ll need a bit of a Fire Island history lesson.“The Pines, when it first was founded in the ’50s, you could almost call it the Pine, because it was really more of a scrubby dune-scape than the lush, forested landscape that we see today,” Rawlins explains. When an increasing number of homes began to pop up in the 1960s, they created a wind barrier— and their septic tanks added needed nutrients to the otherwise sandy soil—which allowed significantly increased foliage to grow. The limited greenery surrounding the house at the time of its inception—and the fact that the living and sleeping spaces are inverted, the living room on the second floor—meant that there was a distinct fish-bowl aspect to the structure’s glass walls. “The glass walls are blatantly to the outside world,” Rawlins says.“So this sort of domestic life that was created in them was part of the architecture, this voyeuristic aspect of looking out and looking in and the fascination that comes with that.” The design isn’t only form, though.“At the same time, he slanted these glass walls, which was a very innovative means of ventilating the house,”Rawlins notes. In the space between the glass walls and the floor there are trap doors that open to allow a breeze to flow into the space, which then flows upward to the operable skylights in the ceiling, creating a chimney effect. “And so there again you have this convergence of these very earnest, ecological principles with a kind of naughty performance of the occupants inside.”

O

urrently owned by Studio 54 architect Scott Bromley—who fondly recalls “little Bobby” Mapplethorpe—and his partner, this house has a cutting backstory as well. Built in 1963 for Edwin Wittstein and Robert Miller,Wittstein and Miller were actually Gifford’s first clients in the Pines. How’d he win the business? By sleeping with them, of course. In fact, he snagged them from a much better known (straight) architect, Andrew Geller.“Like a scene from All About Eve, Gifford stole Andrew Geller’s show,”Rawlins laughs. Although much has been made about Gifford as the so-called creator of gay architecture, Rawlins says that he sees him as more of a countercultural figure—almost a hippie. “He had a lot of communitarian notions about dwelling,” he asserts.“One of those is that the public spaces should be grand and the private spaces should be just enough to inhabit, because he wanted people to be together and enjoy activities together.” 519 Porgie Walk is a perfect early example of this communal approach to the shared spaces of a Gifford home. “You have very well-appointed kitchens, rather grand living spaces and then just very simplistic bedroom spaces,”Rawlins says. As Gifford’s career progressed and his clients grew wealthier, the communal aspect of his designs tended to fade slightly. “But that is certainly the ethos that he brings into his houses and it carries through the vast majority of them.”

hough the damage from Hurricane Sandy was significantly less severe than in other Fire Island and coastal communities, the Pines and Cherry Grove didn’t escape totally unscathed. Even homes like 266 Bay Walk that look relatively unharmed were sunk under several inches of water last fall. Gifford’s homes, while known for their durability, aren’t immune to the changing tides of ocean levels.“The floodplain has risen so much as the severity of storms increases that even when the homes are well-built they still get washed through,”notes Rawlins. Currently being refurbished following the storm, this house had about eight inches of water in it, and all of its decks, especially a grand circular deck that overlooked the bay, washed away. As rebuilding efforts continue in many homes facing the bay and the ocean, daily struggles—like fines from municipality inspectors in Bayport and the slow move of construction on the tiny strip of land—continue to abate progress.“[Flooding] is going to be a continuing problem,”Rawlins says. “And it’s both a problem in terms of preservation and aesthetics, because the nature of the house changes when you elevate it to be safe. So it opens up a whole host of issues.” 266 Bay Walk is also a great example of Horace Gifford’s importance to the Pines’A-list community at the time he was designing homes there. “It was designed for a very famous illustrator and fabric retailer named Jay Crawford,”explains Rawlins.“Before Gifford, the architecture was just no match for the level of taste and sophistication of the clients.”

A BOARDWALK TOUR OF TWO OF THE HOMES NOT OPEN TO CHRISTOPHER RAWLINS’ TOUR.

ECAUSE NOT ALL OF GIFFORD’S HOMES are open to his tour, Rawlins is only able to point out some of Gifford’s work as he makes his way down the Boardwalk. Built in 1965, at the corner of Tarpon and Ocean Walks more recent owners have added a second, lower deck to the original frame of the Evans-DePass house.“It had a very narrow base with this broad, cantilevered deck that wrapped around the entire house, the idea being that there were large decks on the south, east and west sides of the house that chased the sun,”Rawlins notes.“Gifford described it as a space ship hovering over its less distinguished neighbors because it was just surrounded by a bunch of shacks.”The floor plan is also indicative of the time in which it was built. “It’s sort of cross shaped and in the branches of that cross is a particular space and the heart of it is left completely open, because basically the house was designed as a dance floor with ancillary rooms.” On Ocean Walk, the boardwalk side of the Lipkins house, built in 1970, was left unscathed by Hurricane Sandy, while the ocean side is still being rebuilt. “I describe it as a discotheque upon the dunes, with trusting cantilevers and a pulsing roofline,” Rawlins expounds. “It’s another of his later, what I would call voyeuristic houses, where the ocean front elevation is floor-to-ceiling glass.”It’s a shame that tour-goers won’t be able to see the inside of this Gifford home, too. “The one contrast to this very voyeuristic space facing out to the beach is a windowless room that steps down to a space that, on the drawings, is named‘The Cave.’You step down and it’s electric-blue shag-carpeted walls and oversized cushions and that was the extent of the space,” Rawlins explains. “It’s just amazing to imagine what might have occurred in these various spaces with their light shows and electric-blue shag carpet and their view out to the ocean.”

Isaac Escalante: “Absolutely, I’m the marrying kind, but I think it is hard to date a DJ. Our schedules are unpredictable and our traveling is demanding.”

PICTURE PERFECT JULY 26

NIGHTLIFE

WEEK

inspired by the edgy glamor of nightlife photography, brandon Voss launches his latest party, snapshot.

here’s no denying it: everyone loves nightlife photos. From the online galleries of last night’s party pics that pop up daily on Facebook to the back pages of this very magazine—be honest, when was the last time you didn’t open the back cover of Next Magazine first?— those shots in the dark remind us how much fun we had and how much trouble we got into. They document a particular moment in club culture, but it seems they also shape it. For his latest weekly party, SnapShot, which launches July 26, nightlife powerhouse BrandonVoss is taking inspiration from nightlife photography—both the images themselves and the act of creating them. “My main goal is to create an experiential event,”Voss says. To that end he’s teamed up with photographer Marco Ovando to create weekly photo shoots at SnapShot’s sleek midtown venue, EVR. “I’ve been photographing Brandon’s parties for years,”says Ovando,“and some of my best shots come out of our collaborative events.”The party’s promo images include a selection of those shots: black and white photos of taut go-go boys in skimpy jockstraps and nightlife personalities like Markus Kelle and SnapShot host Amanda Lepore. It’s the perfect fusion of classic Hollywood allure and provocative nightlife eroticism—very Studio 54. The images that result from the weekly shoots at SnapShot will be on the flyers promoting each week’s party. “It’s designed to be a sexually charged atmosphere,” Voss explains. “Guests can expect lots of visual stimulation and artistry, all of which will be captured on film.” Adding to the sensory stimuli is visual artist and “performance absurdist” Muffinhead. “THERE WERE MANY instances in which I can say I had an inkling, but I just didn’t know what to call it. I knew that when I saw Eddie Murphy’s Delirious I was more interested in how good he looked in red leather rather than the jokes. When I was 14 I went to boarding school, after I realized what my (not-sosubliminal) poems about Duncan Sheik were actually about. I looked in the mirror in my dorm room (while my roommate was still at soccer practice, of course) and said out loud to myself, ‘I’m gay’. It felt pretty good to hear!”

TUESDAY JULY 30

WEEK

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

THE L.A. AND DENVER WINNERS OF THE MOST ORIGINAL STOLI GUY CONTEST TAKE ON OUR Q&A ROUND BEFORE THE COMPETITION HITS NEW YORK.

ueer travel site GayCities.com has teamed up with Stoli this summer as they scour the gayest cities in the U.S. for the Most Original Stoli Guy. From San Francisco to Boston and back again, they’re hosting competitions to find unique and passionate guys—and it doesn’t hurt if they look mighty fine in sponsor Andrew Christian’s underwear. With the New York competition taking place at Splash on July 30— featuring a special live performance by Mimi Imfurst’s girl group Xelle—we decided to subject the first two winners of the L.A. and Denver contests to our pageant-style Q&A.Take note, NewYork hopefuls! —JR

Q

Jeff Vance

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR THE NEW YORK GUYS COMPETING AT SPLASH ON JULY 30?

IF YOU WERE A STOLI FLAVOR, WHICH WOULD YOU BE? L.A. winner Ben Grado: I would say I’d have to be Strawberry. Denver winner Jeff Vance: Stoli Citros, hands down. I’m bright, shining and lively and exude enormous energy. I lure you in with my exciting lemon sweetness and then surprise you later with my spontaneous lime wild side.

Ben Grado

L.A.: All in all, I would just say to go out there and do your thing. Be yourself and have fun as in the end, that’s what this contest is about: bringing your own originality to the table. Denver: Don’t overthink it! People react best when you’re up on the stage having fun simply being yourself. Chances like this don’t come along every day, so soak it up while you can.

WAS IT HARD KEEPING YOUR MIND ON YOUR GAME WITH ALL THE OTHER CUTE GUYS ON STAGE DURING THE COMPETITION IN YOUR CITY?

WHAT DO YOU REPRESENT ABOUT THE GAY SCENE IN YOUR CITY?

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO WOW THE JUDGES WHEN IT COMES TIME FOR THE FINAL ROUND, WHEN YOU’RE UP AGAINST ALL THE OTHER WINNERS FROM DIFFERENT CITIES?

L.A.: All the boys really brought their own originality to the table, making the overall contest that much more exciting. Denver: In the end, I think all of us were really just having a blast together; it’s not often that you get to dance around with strapping lads on a stage and have an entire crowd cheer you on. If anything, how cute the others were just gave me a boost knowing that we were really putting on a hell of a show.

L.A.: I’d like to think that I represent someone who embraces and embodies the power of passion. My passion for life brings out the essence of who I am, and empowering others around me to be the best they can be. Denver: The spirit that you can be a radiant, shining star without needing to put others down. I have the most fun when everyone around me is smiling and having the time of their lives, and I think the Denver scene is one that cultivates a shared lively experience.

L.A.: I hope my originality personifies [what] makes me attractive to others: cute, fun-loving guy next door who isn’t afraid to be sexy. I believe these qualities mixed in with some acrobatics are sure to give the other contestants a run for their money. Denver: I’m going to go out there and make sure everyone that sees me on that stage knows exactly who this “Jeff from Denver”guy is, a spontaneous, dorky boy with a big heart and a smile brighter than the sun.

fire island becomes paradise island when wonder woman herself, lynda carter, takes the stage at the ice palace.

s this the John Russell?” Lynda Carter purrs seductively over the phone. “Is this the world famous writer? The scintillating, internationally renowned writer, John Russell?” You’ve got to hand it to her; the lady knows how to start a phone call. Despite having caught her in the middle of packing for a fabulous summer getaway—London, Tanzania, Venice— the once and futureWonderWoman is incredibly warm and unfailingly cheerful. She seems more interested in genuine conversation and engagement than in a one-sided, narcissistic interview. She wants to hear my opinions on the topics I ask her about, at one point asking what the experience of coming out was like for me, and even singing The Supremes’ “Stop in the Name of Love,” one of the songs she’s considering for her upcoming show on Fire Island. We gotWonderWoman feeling especially candid, as she discussed her everevolving show, what it’s like to be a gay icon and why she hates the term “cabaret.”—JR

“I

ON HER ONE-WOMAN SHOW: “IT’S A REFLECTION USUALLY of just where I am, what I want to sing. I don’t know what I’m gonna want to sing next year. I’m always looking. I’m always making notes and trying to stay ahead of things. I’ve got a lot of songs to choose from. My taste in music is so varied. I like real bluesy stuff, I like country, I like rock, I like jazz. I like it all. Since I’m not a recording artist—or one with hit songs—I can’t do my greatest hits. So I do other people’s greatest hits! And I do them in my own way. I think of myself as a storyteller.”

DON’T CALL IT “CABARET”:

Lynda Carter

“I HATE THE TERM ‘cabaret!’ I really do! I don’t know, it just sounds like old people! I don’t know what I’d like to call [what I do], but I always think of cabaret as being the songbook out of the ’40s and ’50s. I always think of that.To me it always sounds like lounge-y or something.”

ON BEING A GAY ICON: “AN ICON IN GENERAL—you know, because actors just live their lives and then they go and do parts and pretend to be other people—actors tend to get the credit, if it’s a good guy, for the moral characters you play. So people really want to know, is the public persona that person? And luckily I played a character that is really cool. So for me it’s kind of overwhelming sometimes, but it’s very cool. And I know that it’s really not about me. I know that it’s about the whole thing. It’s the idea of the character, the goddess within. And it’s fun.”

LYNDA CARTER’S ICON SERIES: “HILLARY CLINTON IS AN ICON for me, because of what she had to go through, through all the years—having to kind of play down her intellect, and she’s so much more. She finally got to relax and do what she did as Secretary of State. People who have taken these chances on music: Bette Midler. I think Beyoncé is phenomenal. She’s maintained a humanness and what she does and how she sings and how she moves is so authentic. I think Sheryl Crow, being a songwriter, she’s fantastic. It’s not just because they’ve had a bunch of hit records. It’s about how they went about doing it—without going off the rails, because, wow, it’s easy to do.”

THEATER

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

louis Bravo’s “forever Tango” By David Hurst ony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell opened The Town Hall’s Starry Summer Nights Concert Series July 8 with his spectacular Simply Broadway concert to a rapturous, adoring audience. His superb voice accompanied by the excellent jazz pianist Tedd Firth, heartthrob Mitchell worked his way through a set of fifteen classic show tunes and two encores that ran the gamut from the Gershwins’ “It Ain’t Necessarily So” to Sondheim’s “Finishing the Hat.” Purposefully avoiding songs from his two greatest triumphs, Ragtime and Kiss Me Kate, Mitchell took on roles as disparate as Lancelot in Camelot, Javert in Les Miserables, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Fagin in Oliver and Littlechap in Stop the World – I Want to Get Off, among others. Between his polished, charming patter and his impeccable singing, Mitchell’s performance was just about perfect. Many critics likened the tedious Chinese opera currently headlining at this year’s Lincoln Center Festival, Monkey: Journey to the West, to Cirque du Soleil in their reviews, but don’t be fooled. Though there are some visually interesting sets, some juggling, some flying and some acrobatics, this Monkey is but a pale entertainment to anything Cirque du Soleil has ever produced and will bore even the most patient and forgiving aesthetes. Based on a late 16th century Chinese folktale about a group of outcasts traveling to India seeking sacred Buddhist scriptures, Monkey combines animated sequences with martial arts and a meandering score. It concludes this weekend and not a moment too soon. My first outing to the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) this year was a musical endurance test entitled Julian

Po. Devoid of dramatic action or a compelling score, Po is a vanity piece by Ira Antelis (music) and Andrew Barrett (book & lyrics) that’s based on a 1997 screenplay by Alan Wade whose own source material was a Serbian novel. In the film, which Wade also directed, Christian Slater played the title character. In Antelis & Barrett’s musical version, Chad Kimball, a Tony nominee for Memphis, plays Po, a mysterious drifter who arrives in a small town and announces he’s there to kill himself. One by one, the town’s denizens find themselves changed by Po’s presence and—of course—Po himself finds love and the will to live. No doubt, Julian Po is intended to be a quirky blend of comedy and drama, but despite hiring a high-profile cast (including Malcolm Gets and Luba Mason), director Kristen Sanderson is working with really lousy material. Additionally, for a musical (even a bare-bones festival production) Julian Po had some of the most out-of-tune singing I’ve heard in years—specifically from a quartet of musicians who functioned as a Greek chorus of sorts. Their playing was fine but their tentative harmony-based singing was cringe inducing. And, to be clear, this isn’t the case of a show just needing more time or more rehearsal. The stupefying Julian Po never warranted being set to music in the first place. Following stints in 1997 and 2004, Louis Bravo’s Forever Tango is back on the boards for the third time and it’s a treat for dance lovers despite some misgivings. Forever Tango boasts 16 core dancers and a terrific 11-piece bandoneon-based orchestra. What makes this revival noteworthy from a pop-culture standpoint is the presence of two special guest stars (through July 28)—Ukrainian dancers Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff, of Dancing with the Stars fame. Though they don’t employ the same serious, “pulled-in” tango style of the regular company, ‘Maks’ and Karina dance with more physical abandon and sexiness, and both of them are extremely accomplished technicians. At 6’2” the hunkalicious Maks towers over the rest of the men in the cast and is utterly gorgeous to look at as he partners with the equally beautiful Karina. N Monkey: Journey to the West plays thru July 28 at LCT’s Koch (20 Lincoln Center Plaza, LincolnCenterFestival.org). Louis Bravo’s Forever Tango plays thru September 15 at the Walter Kerr (219 W 48th St, ForeverTangoBroadway.com).

YOU TALKIN’ TO ME? cate blanchett & alec baldwin in Blue Jasmine

Reel Love Wasteland

Blue Jasmine Time Investment: 98 min. Return on Investment: 75 min. oody Allen’s somber new film Blue Jasmine (Sony Pictures Classics) opens on a Chanelclad Cate Blanchett mid-flight as she gabs with her first-class neighbor. She explains how she’s lost everything in her Park Avenue existence now that her husband went to jail for some Madoffesque scheme. It doesn’t seem to bother her too much—that is until they land and Blanchett’s companion rushes to meet her husband and explain the strange woman on the plane who wouldn’t stop talking to herself. Jasmine’s inflated ego and disillusioned lifestyle clash with that of her adopted white-trash sister—and new roommate—Ginger (Sally Hawkins) provide many of the film’s great farcical moments. Most of the guest stars awkward screen time is squandered to showcase the destruction of Blanchett’s wonderful neurotic elitism. Only Alec Baldwin gets to shine as Blanchett’s exquisitely charming ex-husband. It seems as if Allen wants to return to his obsession with the past in a darker way than Midnight in Paris. Jasmine constantly talks about “wanting to do something with her life”—to escape a life like her sisters. Allen is aware this is a difficult task; that a better life— a life without the decisions we’ve made—is not a possibility. And for those, like Jasmine (and maybe Allen), who insist there is, we can still pretend the fantasy is real so long as someone’s there to listen. Question is: do you want to listen? —Benjamin Solomon

Time Investment: 108 min. Return on Investment: 75 min. here are a lot of clichés in Rowan Athale directorial debut Wasteland (Oscilloscope Laboratories). The film opens with a young British criminal Harvey (Luke Treadaway) explaining to a local cop (Timothy Spall) why he has landed in prison, beat-up and bloody. And the cliches don’t stop there, as his tale of an innocent man sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit slowly twists into a Ocean’s Eleven-style heist film, complete with a planning room—you know, the one where they hang blueprints on the wall? And then there is the title—which was better used by the wonderful 2010 documentary, Waste Land, about Brazilian artist Vik Muniz who helps locals transform

trash into art. Athale isn’t so focused on the trash in the trash in his Wasteland. Sure, Athale slowly reveals that the motivations for his safe-cracking foursome lie in their desire to escape their bleak English lives. But Athale is more interested in giving screentime to the film’s twist ending than the mundanities of petty criminals and their run-down factory towns. Still, the beautifully-shot film manages to be a smart and well-devised entry into the heist genre. It’s not Ocean’s glamorous, but still seems appropriately clever for these unintelligible small-town Brits. And the cast of up-and-coming hotties, which, in addition to the handsome Treadaway, include Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon and Harry Potter’s Matthew Lewis (Neville is all grown up!). They are a delight to watch, especially when the decide to plan their big scheme in bath towels. —BS

mended “if you like sneaking gin into your iced tea” and for Do What Thou Wilt the menu merely stated, “don’t order.” Steaming Parker House rolls with a crispy finish of fleur de sel and a slather of floral, creamy tarragon butter were a richly aromatic standout. A buoying Sancerre with notes of grapefruit and green apple was ideal pairing for the refreshing hamachi with candied kumquats, slivers of watermelon radish, micro cilantro and driblets of lemon curd. French Cove oysters from New England arrived on a nest of seaweed and tasted like the salty air of Maine, served with exciting grilled lemons and an enhancing Cabernet mignonette. Vibrant spring pea soup had a touch of crème fraîche, a slight drizzle of oil and ground, toasted pumpernickel bread for garnish. A salad of butter lettuces benefited from thinly sliced Asian pears, bacon nubbins, disarming and delightful pickled shallots, topped with a panko-crisped six-minute egg. Beef tartare with a quail egg

and piquant anchovy aioli distinguished itself with a fine char around the circumference. Moving on to a pasta course, browned gnocchi with sage and hazelnut pesto summoned summer, offering up bright yellow kabocha squash purée and garden-fresh micro basil. Gentle leaflets of tortellini won out, however, delicately assembled with mascarpone and a blessing of sweet corn. The medium rare strip loin steak was very well executed with a bone marrow jus, but we were just overcome by something so simple as the seared Amish chicken breast—so tender it didn’t even require a knife! A trio of accompanying carrots featured a salt-roasted purple variety, a purée and classic slow-cooked. There was yet another egg incorporated, fried this time, and nose-tingling pickled pearl onions. A shatteringly good side of Brussels sprouts with honey butter had a surprising heat while the fabulous whipped potatoes must have been

whipped up with at least three pounds of smoked butter. For desert, a reassuring glass of Basil Hayden bourbon matched up well with a creamy orb of quark cheesecake, shockingly tangy lime sherbet and palate-balancing mixed-berry gel. N

PRICES: Appetizers: $9-$18; Entrées: $20-$39; Alcohol: wine, beer, full bar, specialty cocktails.

SHORT ORDER: A fantastic night out in a gorgeous setting, scored by a reasonably thumping DJ vibe.

PETER’S PICKS: Parker House rolls; vibrant pea soup; sweet corn tortellini; Amish chicken breast; smoked butter mashed potatoes

PETER’S PANS: Hmmm…none!

ROD: Does Raging Stallion ever make a bad movie? There’s not a bad coupling in this lot—like Jessy Ares and Alex Marte. MANUEL: This scene lets us learn Italian the easy way: by listening to Marte getting fucked! Watch out, Rosetta Stone. Raging Stallion is onto something. In Lesson one, this big, muscular and verbal bottom teaches us succhiammi il cazzo (suck my dick), scopammi (fuck me), and sto sborrando (I’m coming). It’s educational and more interesting than“Oh, yeah!” ROD: I’d love to have my native tongue all over Marte’s beefy ass the way Jessy Ares did! Next, bearded Tommy Defendi gets aggressive with preppy James

Ryder, who could have been a J. Crew model before he got all those gorgeous tattoos. And talk about smooth! MANUEL: Ryder, in a hip-flexor stretch position, deep-throats Defendi then flips over, revealing the “Marilyn Monroe” beauty mark on his right cheek (his right butt cheek) and letting Defendi scratch the itch I’m sure he gets more often than once every seven years. ROD: How about that tiny leather jockstrap Alexander Garrett was wearing? After Jimmy Fanz set Garrett’s cock free, I wondered how it ever fit in there, much less in Fanz’ mouth or ass! MANUEL: Garrett’s mesh top stayed pulled up around his pecs the whole time, looking like a brassiere and making this hot scene look like a photoshoot for the transvestite edition of International Male’s Undergear Catalogue.

DINNER IN THE NUDE Ryan Rose in Buck Naked

Buck Naked Falcon, 1-800-227-3717, FalconStudios.com even young bucks in a cabin in the woods buck naked. Let the bucking begin!

S

ROD: You just can’t Google a porn star these days without getting bad news. Ryan Rose was looking like the greatest thing to happen to porn since Ryan Idol, but in April Rose put his thenboyfriend and co-star Bobby Hart in the hospital. Maybe Rose’s newfound bottoming for Tyler Wolf and Shawn Wolfe was his penance. If that’s the case, I’d love to be the one to give him absolution. MANUEL: Falcon made Buck Naked a month before the Hart attack, when the bloom was still on this Rose. I can see why some love this Cheyenne Jackson-esque vers built guy (he’s the kind of guy Marsha Brady would’ve

48 JULY 26, 2013

dreamed of going to the prom with), but I find him generic. ROD: Rose has the body of a god, and I loved watching the Wolves (Tyler and Shawn) feeding on his ass. MANUEL: I was intrigued by big, bald Angelo. In a formulaic and passionless pairing, he and Marcus Ruhl offered great visuals for quadriceps lovers. ROD: Landon Conrad + Logan Vaughn = a delicious combination. Vaughn’s ass is always ready for eating at a moment’s notice. MANUEL: Watching Conrad feast, it occurred to me that porn is like a cooking show. When Tom Colicchio, say, samples a dish, viewers can only imagine the flavors. It’s no different with ass. Luckily, at one point Landon Conrad comes up for air and says, “It tastes so good!” I guess I believe him.
