pinions on the significance of cock size are as varied as the actual cocks around gay New York. A recent study by a team of (allmale) Australian biologists showed that penis size was a factor in judging men’s attractiveness. However, this is hardly cause for less-endowed gays to fret, because body shape and height scored as more important. Plus, the study’s subjects were all women. To get the tea on what gay men think, I went all Carrie-Bradshaw-incowboy-boots and asked my friends. Responses more or less focused on practicality and aesthetics, with a surprising number of guys actually preferring more of a medium-sized member on a guy—or maybe they were just unwilling to publicly admit to being a total size queen. Apparently, too big is a problem for quite a few gays. DJ Nando shared a very candid opinion that several others echoed: “Depends if you wanna suck comfortably or bleed out your asshole.” Another queen, who asked to remain anonymous, told me he dodges more mammoth members“because I feel like I can’t give decent head [if it’s too big]. And normally I pride myself [on that].” A friend of a friend, Pepito, took it one step further: “I can only take max

“For go-go boys, it’s about your energy and attitude. I’d hire a tight, toned body that moves well with a pretty face before breaking out a ruler.” You’d think size would matter a lot for go-go dancers—those boys and their bulges are in the spotlight on a nightly basis. But promoter Justin Luke says size is hardly a factor. “For go-go boys it’s about your body, your booty and your energy and attitude,” he explains.“I’d hire a tight, toned body that moves well with a pretty face before breaking out a ruler.” Even Daniel Nardicio, who is known for his scandalous underwear parties, doesn’t care about a dancer’s unit unless he’s naked. “I actually prefer dancers with great asses: usually they were fat kids, so they are needier and will let anyone touch them for approval they never got from their parents,” he says. “Dancers with big dicks are often very full of themselves.” It seems the results of my casual study are inconclusive. Most will at least tolerate a medium-sized dick, and some prefer it. Hell, a few guys even told me they hunt for small dicks! Basically, people like what they like, and chances are someone will like what you have. As for my opinion, it’s what’s inside (me) that counts. N

WHEN BROADWAY performer Natalie Joy Johnson was booked for a month-long gig at Therapy in May 2011, it didn’t take long for her to realize it was a job she’d like to extend. “After the second week, I told my musical director extraordinaire, Brian Nash, that somehow we were gonna take over that show! They had a cancellation for June, and I was like, ‘We’re available!’ [Since then,] it’s been two and a half years at Therapy.” This January, Johnson’s popular show at the Hell’s Kitchen bar will be moving to Monday nights, when she’ll hit the stage directly after weeklyscreeningsofRuPaul’s DragRace.“Ohmy god. I love that show,” she gushes,“I’m very excited for the spirited dialogue that’s about to go down, hunty.” Speaking of drag queens, Johnson is also getting ready to make her debut in Kinky Boots on Broadway this month. “I’m playing Pat. She’s in management at the shoe factory. And I am giving you a fierce red wig!”

WHEN ASTORIA RESIDENT Nick Lion had some friends visiting from California a few years ago, he wanted to take them out to a nice place for a cocktail, but couldn’t think of a suitable spot in the neighborhood. So he decided to open Icon (31-84 33rd St, IconAstoria.com), a clean, upscale gay club that’s both glamorous and welcoming. “It’s called Icon and it’s dedicated to and inspired by Marilyn Monroe,” explains Lion of the new bar’s design inspiration. “It’s very glamorous and sparkly. It’s a place where you like to bring people and be in a beautiful surrounding,”he continues.“It’s a nice respite.” Icon joins a number of new venues hoping to cater to Astoria’s thriving gay scene, and Lion says the bar will offer a full range of shows, regular live entertainment and drag queens. One thing you won’t find at the new venue, however, are any televisions. “I didn’t want TVs and video screens or anything because it’s almost like going out and everyone’s looking at their iPods and phones, and they’re not communicating and socializing,” says Lion. “It’s proven that if there’s a TV screen your eyes focus on that.” There will be plenty else to focus on when Icon celebrates its grand opening (on December 28) and New Year’s Eve this week. For the bar’s grand opening party, Lion promises a special surprise performance as well as dancers and no cover. On New Year’s Eve, Amanda Lepore and Carmen Carrera will be hosting the glitzy blowout celebration with DJ Amoroso. At both events, Lion hopes to set a warm and welcoming tone for the future. “I want a place where my people can feel connected,”he says.“Most important is the heart of the club.”—Will Pulos

fter a couple drinks at the bar around the corner from my apartment, I was saying goodbye to the muscular, dark-haired guy I’d met earlier that night when he asked if I wanted to come upstairs. It was a weekend, and I didn’t just down a large frozen margarita for nothing, so I said yes. Once we got to his sparsely decorated room (there was a painting of a wolf on the wall that I chose to ignore), we chatted for a bit and started fooling around. When we moved to the bed, I managed to get his tight black V-neck around his swollen biceps with a full-hearted yank, and noticed a small symbol on his arm. “What’s that?”I got out between deep breaths, pointing at the black design on his forearm. “It’s a Mexican symbol for infinity,” he said solemnly. “Oh, like those bottomless margaritas we just had?” I quipped. Silence. “And this one over here?”I said, pointing to an “MM” and an “SS” in a heart on his right shoulder. “My friend and I both got these years ago; we’ve never told anyone what it means. “Does it stand for Muscle Man and Slutty Sally?” I guessed. “That’s the closest anyone’s ever gotten.” I can’t stand tattoos. I’ve hated tehm my entire life, but as they’ve become increasingly popular, especially for gay men, my antipathy for them has grown exponentially. I think they make people look cheap and tacky, and looking at them makes me think of needles, which I also can’t stomach. A lot of this probably has to do with my growing up on the shores of Lake Michigan. There’s nothing in the world less sexy than a bloated Midwesterner, covered in tattoos, sipping a Coors Light on a sand dune. Trust me. Among 18- to 25-year-olds in the U.S., 36 percent have at least one tattoo. That means that almost 40 percent of my peers

TERRA GRENADE

he life of Craig Daniel Stastny, a.k.a. Terra Grenade, was not without hardships prior to moving to New York from Minnesota a little over a year ago. Stastny’s father passed when he was 13, then, last year his mother also suddenly died. When Stastny moved to New York two months later, he was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, often waking up in the middle of the night screaming.“I was living in a tiny room and drinking a bottle of vodka a night to cope,” he recalls. He knew he had to do something to get out of his funk—so he tried drag. “I started doing drag to get over my depression—to make myself and other people laugh.” And voila—Terra Grenade was born. Having bonded with his mother while watching RuPaul’s Drag Race together, it seemed like a fitting way to keep her memory alive. Since starting to perform, things have progressed quickly for the 25year-old queen. Grenade placed second in “So You Think You Can Drag” at New World Stages this fall and took the title“Our Lady of Saliva”at the allstars version of Thorgy Thor and Azrea’s popular drag competition at The Ritz. Winning the Saliva crown was especially significant to Grenade because prior to moving to the city, she had stumbled upon the drag party and was blown away. “I thought, these are the things I’ve only read about in Party Monster,”she says. Obsessed with the James St. James book since high school, Grenade was finally seeing it come to life. Her ethos has been to“work really hard and perform everywhere until I can get a gig, and I finally did!”(Her new show at Boots & Saddle starts on January 8.) A self described “comedy queen,”Grenade does her best to stay true to her theory that “in drag you better be making them laugh or be making them gag.” And

Grenade manages to do both by creating over-the-top characters and hilarious and spectacular lip-synch montages. Of course, she has had some help along the way. On her first night out she was adopted by her drag mother, Kizha Carr, who among other things coachedheronheract.“Carrinsistsonperformancesthatmakesense,”Grenade says. ”You can’t just piece together random things that gays like, like a MommieDearestmonologuegoingintoBeyoncé.Itneedstohaveastoryoratheme.” ShealsorecentlyfoundherselfinthemiddleofaRuPaul’s DragRacescandal.Apparently,apictureofoneofthenewcontestants,MilkQueen,wasposted as a teaser without identifying who it was, and people mistakenly tagged it as Grenade.“All of a sudden I got like 500 friend requests in one day!”she tells us. A clever queen who’s not afraid of attention, Grenade milked the snafu for all it was worth, creating a confusing confession video that alluded to a love affair with Drag Race judge Santino Rice, as well as an upcoming endorsement deal withTaco Bell. Some queens thought it was ruthless, but Milk wasn’t too bothered by the prank, and now Grenade is beholden to her. “I’m in Milk Queen’s debt for the rest of my life!” —Wil Fisher

roy Michie has an amazing apartment. That’s important to note not so that you can envy him (though you still should), but because it’s helped him explore an entire medium of art he might otherwise not have had the space to create. This year, the 28-year-old Texan, who earned his BFA at the University of Texas in El Paso before getting his MFA at the Yale School of Art, was accepted into Ira Sachs’Queer Art Mentorship program. He’s been working with artist Geoff Chadsey for four months and has loved every minute of the experience.“I’ve been working with him to create a body of work based on Jean Genet’s [novel] Querelle [of Brest],”he explains. Although his new address in the South Bronx might not be as fashionable as his old one on the border between Bushwick and Williamsburg, it means that he now has the space to explore all of the mediums he’s interested in—from collage to sculpture.“I was making a lot of work in my room and I didn’t really have any space,” Michie says of his time in Brooklyn. “A couple of my friends had built up a loft space here and I was fortunate enough to get a room. So finally I have a space for my sculptures.” Don’t overlook his collage work, though. Chadsey, who selected Michie for the Queer Art Mentorship program, says that was what got his attention.“I’m a sucker for collage, and my eye veers towards work involving the figure, but not in a ham-fisted—or grease-fisted—this-is-homoerotic way,” he explains.“I like thatTroy is looking hard at men’s bodies but he is also taking them apart, reconstructing them in ways that are not whole, but are coherent—a face sliding off the side of a bed, a figure with two backs, two beautiful hairy legs with the upper body completely erased.” “He does really innovative work and has a really great sensibility,” Michie’s formerYale professor Lyle Ashton Harris extols.“I love his collages. I love the sculptural component.” Recently, Michie has been focusing specifically on the way that men of color are portrayed in pornographic material. His work is sexy, but also whipsmart.“The themes I’m exploring are the intersections of race and gender and the exotification of the black male body,” he notes.“A lot of the more recent works I’ve been doing are images of black men from pornography that are cut up and collaged.There are a lot of different layers, so I often sand a layer, or I’ll do a layer of décollage or acrylic paint or use a lot of tape in my work.” Because of the way that the erotic gaze puts specific body parts into hyper focus, collage, with its penchant for dissection, is the perfect medium to take a hard look at which artistic language is being used to eroticize the male form. “I like that Troy’s collages create strange gestures, his X-acto 14 DECEMBER 27, 2013

knife carving out an arching back, an open mouth, a hand reaching out as if to feed,”Chadsey praises.“Vintage pornography becomes personal, intimate.” Michie credits artists like Mark Bradford and writers like Audre Lorde and Octavia Butler as influences.“I just saw a really great show in Chelsea with [late queer artist] Paul Thek. That was pretty amazing,” he adds. “I look a lot at socialist artwork. A lot of the Russian constructivists and before that Mexican muralists.” His aspirations are admittedly humble: a solo show in NewYork, and more importantly, the ability to continue to build his portfolio. In January he’s exhibiting in a show at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston.“I’m excited to have some pieces in that show,”he says. Michie’s art has greater implications than he let’s on, though. Chadsey hints at this, saying, “In lieu of a cross-generational conversation between the young gay coming into consciousness and the older gay providing some kind of wisdom, direction, history—something Ira’s organization is explicitly trying to create—pornography might be considered the young homo’s first guide, a revelatory figure that makes you ask,‘Is that what I want? Is that who I want to be?’ Porn is often the first lover and a beckoning mirror. Are these figures meant to be Troy? A lover? His father?”You’ll have to judge for yourself. —Alex Erikson

n October 16, Elizabeth James celebrated her first full year in NewYork.OriginallyfromKentucky,the27-year-olddragqueen moved to the city from Nashville after getting encouragement from her close friend Misty Meaner. “It was always my dream [to live in NewYork],” James says.“I came up here a few months before moving here and met some amazing people.” She says support from Meaner especially resonated.“I said,‘I’ll be here in three months.’ I went home and sold everything and moved here in two months.” At that time, James had been doing drag for less than a year.“One of my friends [back in Nashville] wanted to host a New Year’s Eve party—their performer had canceled—and I thought, oh fun, I’ll do it,” she recalls of her first performance.“Andtheysaid,‘P.S.Theywantyoutobeindrag.’”Shesaysshegotdolled up mostly as a joke, but immediately discovered something life changing.“After thefirstsongIdid,IrememberwalkingbackstageandIremembertellingmybest friend,‘Something just happened. I understand my life through doing this.’” Since arriving in NewYork, she has quickly risen from her first amateur performance to a life of full-time drag.“I account that for being careful who I surround myself with,”she reflects.“It was a struggle for a little bit, but then I figured out how to get my own shows and how to do it.”She also says she wouldn’t be as busy as she is if it weren’t for her work ethic. “I came here ready to work. As a character, James is glamorous, a fully realized woman, but also three-dimensional enough to occasionally give into a more wild performance-art aesthetic. “When I first started I tried to put on a whole glamorous 35-year-old-ish woman, but I learned it was hindering my performance ability and my creativity because it was such a designed thing.”Poulin agrees:“To be honest, she is Elizabeth both on stage and off.” Drag, James says, has allowed her to really find who she is.“It does allow me to own my own life more,” she says. ne of the first things you notice when you meet Bobby LaSalle is how young the up-and-coming promoter looks. At the recent launch of the new Friday night party Berlin at Providence, he was standing at the bottom of the stairs in a black blazer andTshirt, looking like he barely made it past the bouncer. But once you start to talk to him, you can tell from his level-headed conversation that he’s probably be a bit older than he appears. In fact, when Justin Luke hired him to work as his assistant at BoiParty, LaSalle’s surprising depth was one of the first things that came to his attention. “Bobby looks like he’s 18, but he’s actually 27,” Luke says. “He looks young, but he is wise and very intelligent,” the BoiParty founder continues. “He’s a hard-working guy who’s willing to do anything. He’s creative, funny and approachable. He loves the parties and our crowd loves him.” Luke hired LaSalle to work with him and the BoiParty team seven months ago, and in that time the dark-haired New Jersey resident has become a fixture at parties like Viva!, Penthaus Fridays and Q Thursdays at Marquee. LaSalle attributes the early success that he’s had in the New York party world to staying in touch with the cultural current and giving partiers what they want—even if it’s not exactly what he had initially envisioned. “The most important thing that I’ve learned is that even though you may have a vision, ultimately you have to feel out the zeitgeist of the people and know what they want,”says LaSalle.“You really have to listen.” The former restaurant manager got his start organizing events in 2006 with an online newsletter called EMP that formed communities and organized meet-ups around the country. After ending that project to focus on his full-time job, but event planning was always in his blood. “I learned through that early experience what young gay folks want to do, the kind of things they wanted to see, the kind of events they wanted,”he explains.“And through that I kind of realized that I was more passionate about that than what I was doing for a job.” When Justin Luke and Alan Picus were looking to bring a “Jersey contingent,” as LaSalle describes it, to their team, they reached out to the fresh promoter on Facebook. After a few weeks, LaSalle became Luke’s assistant, a position he says has benefitted him immensely. “I feel like I’m in a perfect middle ground and I’ve had such an opportunity with BoiParty and John Blair and Beto Sutter, and they’ve all taken me under their wings,” he coos.“And I figure this is perfect, if I can learn from the best.” In 2014, LaSalle will continue to cut his teeth in NewYork gay nightlife with the ongoing Berlin party at Providence, an epic New Year’s Eve party at the Hudson Bond, the continued success of QThursdays and late-night partying atViva! is pipes took him to the stages of the GreatWhiteWay, but today, expect Rick Stockwell to use a camera to convey a story.“I’m always interested in making people look good, finding what they are really about, as opposed to what they think they are about,” he says. “[I like] opening them up, climbing inside their eyes and finding the best possible side and new ways of photographing them.” That might sound a bit lofty, but an original take never hurt anybody— and it certainly makes Stockwell stand out in a saturated industry where anybody with an iPhone and an Instagram account is a“photographer.” Born in Buffalo, Stockwell has traveled from one coast to the other as a theater and operatic singer and credits the work of two other artists with pioneering visions—Annie Leibovitz and the late gay photo-phenom Herb Ritts— for rechanneling his creative energies. “Ritts’pictures were always so beautiful; the glitziness, the sexiness, the creativeness,” says Stockwell, who married his boyfriend in September. “My partner said I was always good at taking snapshots—why not go into photography? I thought that was a good idea,”he continues, admitting how he’d always tended to turn a simple snapshot into an elaborately arranged tableau.“I studied photography for a couple years out in L.A. where we lived, and then started charging clients $50 to cover printing and film costs,” he recalls. “As I got better, I started charging more.” Already a veteran of auditions and open-calls, Stockwell found himself in a unique position once he was behind the lens: having an easy empathy for the subject, which is one of the most valuable connections a photographer can establish. He used that unique sensibility to establish himself as a go-to headshot photographer in Hell’s Kitchen. “I do good work and I care about my clients,”he says. “I bend over backwards to please everybody I shoot, no matter who it is.” But that devotion does not mean an automatic bow to convention or to a particular written-in-stone artistic tradition.To Stockwell, not even the most text18 DECEMBER 27, 2013

Imbuing his work with sharp, classic lines, luminous tones and emotion usually reserved for portraiture, Stockwell neatly challenges the paradigm’s strict aesthetic to create an image that stands out for its complexity of feeling. And all his hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. He’s shot comedian BruceVilanch, actor RodTaylor and Broadway darling Eden Espinosa. (Not to mention our series of Who’s Next Now subjects.) “I’m not going to say headshots get boring, because they never do,”Stockwell says. “I think it has been particularly good for me to mix it up—doing events, physique work and hot model boys.” Variety is, after all, the spice of life. And if it fills out a Speedo, all the better. —David Perry

ately, actor and singer Jason Dottley is known as much for his divorce from Sordid Lives creator Del Shores as for his leading role in the LogoTV series. That notoriety stemmed not from a scandal-drenched, acrimonious split, but from the legal grey area the couple found themselves in when faced with courts unaccustomed to dissolving same-sex marriages. But with the divorce finally behind him, Dottley has chosen to focus on love.This year, he launched the multi-phased Love Story Project, to tell the true stories of gay relationships. And this week, Dottley is celebrating the release of his latest single, “Love Story,” with a special birthday appearance at Industry on December 30. We chatted with the out performer about being a gay divorcee and why you should never roll your eyes at the idea of true love. —JR

Be honest: how many “gay divorcee” jokes have you endured over the past couple years? Lisa Lampanelli threw a great one my way backstage. The others I must have missed. Although perhaps this explains why people keep calling me“Mimi.” Too soon? God, no! Hell, I’m starting my first club residency in town at Slake [on] February 21. I’m hosting the sexiest, most über-exclusive new monthly party in the city! They’re already calling me a playboy—Hef status. And I can do this because I’m divorced. So, no, it is not too soon. Line ’em up! “Love Story” is pretty hopeful. Were you not interested in recording an angry post-breakup song or tearjerker ballad? I wrote“Love Story”about one guy and now I’ve found myself even more smitten with someone else and my mind’s ability to completely shift the song from one person to another is astounding. See, I’m forever in a love story! Also, with the song being a reflection of the message of the Love Story Project, I wanted it to be uplifting. Tell me about The Love Story Project. What’s that all about? After years of society successfully putting a face on gay, I felt the next step as we fight for marriage equality was to put a face on gay love. The project aims to help [others] see people as people and not ideas. I debuted the concept at Industry earlier this year. Industry has been exceptionally supportive of me and my work. I appreciate them greatly! Part of the whole project is your“Love-U-Mentary.”What can you tell us about the film? My Love-U-Mentary is a documentary showcasing the best moments from my Love Story Project interviews. It’s a fantastic celebration of love from literally around the world. Was it hard to focus on love for this project when you yourself had fairly recently ended a long-term—not to mention public—relationship? It was my survival mode kicking in. I have learned enough to know that there are two choices. Act in love, or act in fear.The more I chose to act in love, the more I began to focus on love.The more I focused on love, the easier it was for me to heal myself and move forward into the next chapters of my life. What’s your advice to cynics who roll their eyes at the very word “love?” I think when you choose to express a response to something so openly, it’s because you’re being affected by it more than you can handle on the inside.You’re deflecting. The Right Track The Flawlessness of Bey By Keo Nozari et’s talk about Beyoncé. The videos accompanying the singer’s self-titled “visual album” are indeed breathtaking both in their quantity (17 total) and in their stunning quality. But do the songs stand on their own? On the album Beyoncé, Bey successfully surmounts her reputation as a show pony with little to say: she delivers a fully realized, cohesive, artistic pop/R&B album commendable in its social consciousness and genuinely confessional lyrics. She lays it bare in “Mine,” singing, “Been having conversations about break-ups and separations/I’m not feeling like myself since the baby/Are we even gonna make it?” She owns up to her own pettiness in “Jealousy,” admits distrust of her record label on “Haunted” and eloquently expresses the comfort she finds in raising her daughter on the album’s beautiful final track, “Blue.” Sia-penned opener “Pretty Hurts”—the best song of the collection—takes on America’s unhealthy obsession with perfectionism. “Pretty hurts/We shine a light on whatever’s worse/Perfection is a disease of a nation,” Beyoncé sings, insisting, “It’s the soul that needs a surgery.” On the downside, the most telling line of the album might be on “Partition,” where she sings “Radio says speed it up, but I just go slow.” And slow she goes indeed! It’s no surprise Justin Timberlake co-wrote and Timbaland produced parts of Beyoncé, either. It shares some DNA with Timberlake’s plodding and frustratingly languid 20/20 Experience. In an attempt to prove that it’s different from the über-trendy EDM movement, they’ve sucked a lot of the excitement from the tracks with mellow mid-tempos meant for home listening, not a popping night out. Though where Timberlake bloated the backs of his 20/20 songs with interludes and extensions, Beyoncé puts them up front: tracks like “Partition” and “Haunted” don’t really begin until the two- and three-minute-marks. At times, the moody music feels more like a movie soundtrack than a proper pop album. The muted disco of “Blow” is a rare lighter moment, but Bey’s lush vocals are severely under

serviced by a bare minimum track that never reaches a climax. “Partition” imparts some club-friendliness and “XO” is a grower, but there’s little here that’s a sing-along good time. By eschewing obvious singles, Beyoncé feels like a collection of B-sides, and the unadorned production is somewhat at odds with the super-embellished videos. Nothing approaches the fun of past hits “Crazy in Love” or “Single Ladies”—which were great songs first and great videos second. A moment was missed here with “Grown Woman,” which should have been a free-standing summer single. Instead, it’s relegated to a Beyoncé “bonus” video. And ultimately, that’s kind of how the whole album feels: a missed opportunity. N

Well aware that most remedies are modern-day snake-oil concoctions with more flash that substance, the folks at Forgiven proved their claims by filling up a room with volunteers and getting every last one completely shitfaced. “Taking Forgiven helped the participants in this study to metabolize alcohol at a significantly faster rate than would normally be expected,” said Dr. Tari D. Topolski, who was involved in the study. “Additionally, overall, participants experienced significantly fewer hangover symptoms when they took it.” Forgiven works by speeding up the metabolism of alcohol. Test subjects had their blood alcohol levels compared after three to four hours and saw positive results and many in the study group reported feeling far better than they thought they would after consuming alcohol. A Christmas story - the Musical By David Hurst n And Away We Go, playwright Terrence McNally has written a valentine to actors everywhere. He wants to celebrate them, encourage them and put what they do in both a historical and chronological context. Although moments in the play (which closed December 21) were delightful, the production, as directed by Jack Cummings III, was often as muddled as it was whimsical. A strong cast—including the invaluable Donna Lynne Champlin, Micah Stock, Rachel Botchan, Dominic Cuskern, Carol Schultz and Sean McNall— jumps around through theatrical time making stops in ancient Greece, The Globe, Versailles’s Royal Theater and Coral Gables, Fla. at the American premiere of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Transported across the Atlantic from the Donmar Warehouse where it was a hit with both critics and audiences, Conor McPherson’s The Night Alive is a provocative study on a small handful of Dubliners barely getting by, the role fate and chance plays in their lives and—wait for it—the cosmic implications of religion, time, space and death. Amazingly, McPherson, whose earlier works include The Good Thief, This Lime Tree Bower, The Weir, The Dublin Carol, Port Authority, Shining City and The Seafarer, manages to deftly craft a portrait of humanity that leads to an ending open to multiple interpretations—realistic, paranormal or existential—that will leave some audience members arguing about what they’ve seen. But perhaps that’s the way McPherson wants it. In The Night Alive, Tommy (Ciaran Hinds) finds himself in the banal daily existence of taking care of his Uncle Maurice (Jim Norton) and his co-worker Doc (Michael

McElhatton) when he stumbles upon Aimee (Caoilfhionn Dunne), a sometime prostitute who’s been beaten up by her psychotic boyfriend, Kenneth (Brian Gleeson). As Tommy and Aimee’s relationship grows, the dynamics between the other people in their lives shifts accordingly, leading to revelations and introspection as only McPherson can conjure. Blessed with a phenomenal cast and expert direction by its author, The Night Alive is a beautiful, sweet and poignant piece that will haunt those lucky enough to see it. Though it’s being presented in a cavernous barn of a space, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s wonderful A Christmas Story – The Musical is back again this year and it’s a welcome return! Hilarious and heartwarming in equal parts, A Christmas Story took the theater community by storm last season and garnered three Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Based on the classic 1983 film that starred little Peter Billingsley (who’s now one of the musical’s producers) as Ralphie, and Darren McGavin as his father, the musical tells the story of nine-year-old Ralphie’s quest to get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas in 1940. Almost the entire original Broadway cast has returned for this year’s run at The Theater at Madison Square Garden including Dan Lauria as the narrator, John Bolton as The Old Man, Erin Dilly as Mother and the sensational Caroline O’Connor as Ralphie’s teacher, Miss Shields. Jake Lucas and Noah Baird are playing Ralphie and his little brother, Randy, this time around and they’re utterly beguiling, with strong singing voices and terrific comic timing. Additionally, the tapdancing phenomenon Luke Spring is back with his specialty dance (along with O’Connor) in the Act-Two showstopper, “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out.” Boasting a melodic and beautiful score by Pasek and Paul, smart direction by John Rando and delightful choreography by Warren Carlyle, the timeless tale of A Christmas Story – The Musical should set up shop in a legit Broadway house the whole year round. Return on Investment: 135 min. here is a reason disco swept the country in the late ’70s: at its core, it’s all about reinvention and according to disco you can be your best, most fabulous self. It’s quite possibly the pinnacle of the American Dream realized. Fantasy without consequence— as long as you keep dancing. That’s the essence that David O. Russell perfectly channels in his bullet train of a film, American Hustle (Columbia Pictures). Loosely based on the Abscam busts of the late ’70s and early ’80s, Hustle follows two con artists-turnedlovers (Christian Bale and Amy Adams) who are forced to use their talents to entrap a well-meaning New Jersey politician (Jeremy Renner) after being arrested by a hotshot young FBI agent (Bradley Cooper.) Hustle bursts out of the gate and doesn’t let up once, Russell’s swooping camera and locomotive story-telling style is as much an ode to Martin Scorsese as it is inspired by his films. The assorted characters are all striving for reinvention in one way or another, masking their imperfections with elaborate hair pieces and fake accents in an effort to find happiness. The A-List cast is incredible, and they all bring great humor, pain and pathos to their roles. But it’s Jennifer Lawrence, who, despite being a little too young to play Bale’s loose cannon of a wife, brings ferocity to a knockout role. In a movie that seems to be firing on all cylinders, Lawrence finds an overdrive that helps make the movie an instant classic. —Benjamin Solomon

Her Time Investment: 120 min. Return on Investment: 100 min. ntil about the last 30 minutes of Her (Warner Bros.), writer/director Spike Jonze’s new film about a recently divorced man in the not-too-distant future (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his artificially intelligent operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), I couldn’t stop wondering what the filmmaker was trying to say. Is he making fun of the way people covet Apple products? Given Her’s production design—a twee paradise where all men wear high waisted pants and everyone’s living room looks like a Muji showroom, that would seem an obvious assessment—but no, Spike Jonze just loves this look. So then is Her a satire

of millennials more interested in their cell phones than people? Nope. Jonze clearly indicates that this relationship is real. Realer than real, in fact. And so, at the climax, you see that Jonze’s film is not a metaphor at all. Not commentary on the ownership of intellectual property or a warning about the dangers of A.I. He wants you to take his film at face value. It’s a love story between two people, even if one of those “people” is just a voice. It’s a stranger concept to accept than any metaphor—and that’ll turn some off to Her. But the more you think about it, the more this really is one of the most perfect illustrations of love. After all, love doesn’t really make any logical sense either. That Phoenix and Johansson are able to bring that journey to life is cinematic magic. —BS

By Peter Sherwood ow that Bea has moved into the space formerly occupied by Le Madeleine, my despair over the loss of the French bistro has been alleviated. The space has been updated and brushed over with a fresh coat of whitewash covering the exposed brick, on which muted classic movies, such as A Streetcar Named Desire, play. The feel of an old bistro may be somewhat lost but there is much else to be found at the lovely Bea (pronounced Be-a, named after owner Sotir Zonea’s grandmother). The menu is small-ish, but it still manages to cover a range of cuisines from Asian-inspired pork dumplings and Indian-influenced lamb meatballs to Italian-flavored pizzas and pastas as well as good old American macaroni and cheese. The cocktails were devastatingly good. The Boulevardier was like a negroni but with Old Forester bourbon instead,

along with Campari and distinguished Noilly Prat sweet vermouth. A curl of orange was tucked in, with fragrant, faint sprays of its oils glittering on the surface. A wonderful Smoked Side Car steered by Lapsang Souchong tea-infused brandy with a scoche of Cointreau and lemon juice had the nose of a recently fired pistol. A mix up at the bar turned into quite a happy accident with this cocktail—instead of a sugar rim, we were given a smoky salted rim, which resulted in something akin to a smouldering mescal that my fella and I preferred! We also considered the Thyme & Tonic, with thymeinfused Oxley gin, the Classic Mai Tai and the Bitter Duchess with Scorpion Silver Mezcal, but we thought it was better just to leave well enough alone. Chicken liver tartine was appropriately iron-rich, simple and unfussy, with caramelized onions, a hint of balsamic vinegar and a flutter of chives on thick slices of toast. A Caesar comprised of a lovely pile

of ruffled kale with lively vinegar and Parmesan was peppery and perfect. The warm asparagus salad was more subdued, topped with a poached egg and a fistful of pistachios, dressed with a subtle miso vinaigrette. While not overly exciting, we still ate the gooey, chewy, ripe, cheesy taleggio pizza with a stiff crust, gently roasted maitake mushrooms and caramelized shallots. An excellent bowl of softened buttery macaroni and rich, fully-flavored cheeses with a crisp topping followed. The next round involved a platter with puffs of pillowy fried bread that were merely decent, but the accompanying cheeses, meats and other assortments knocked us out. Sumptuous, spicy, briny olives tickled braised pickles and fennel amid wedges of dainty bleu cheese, an absolutely transporting ricotta salata froth and smoked gouda with plump blackberries. A fabulous salumi combo of nutty mor-

tadella, fragrant as a forest, carefully cured prosciutto and handsome ham rounded out the considerable presentation. nyy steak, a midtown venture between the new york yankees and hard rock International, offers a holiday flavored cocktail to get you in the mood.

serves 1

Honey Crisp Cobbler Ingredients: 2 oz Buffalo Trace bourbon 1 oz rosemary-vanilla infused syrup ½ Honey Crisp apple, chopped 3 dashes orange bitters 3 cranberries 1 cinnamon stick 1. Poke the cranberries with a fork and soak them in a bit of bourbon to cover. Let rest. 2. Gently simmer several sprigs of rosemary and a split vanilla bean in one cup water and ½ cup sugar. 3. When the sugar has dissolved, remove the mixture from heat and let cool. 4. Muddle the apple in a cocktail shaker and set aside. 5. Pour the bourbon with the bitters and a dash of the syrup in an ice-filled shaker and stir before straining into a double highball glass over ice. 6. Add the muddled apple, sitrring to incorporate it into the drink and garnish with the cranberries and cinnamon stick. Serve and enjoy!
