fleet europe community We are both happy and proud to welcome you all to Prague this year. That’s because we feel that, following our previous meetings in Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Madrid and Cannes, there’s now a very real sense of community around Fleet Europe - between us all. This year again, over 550 of us have come together to share knowledge and exchange views on the complex and fascinating world that is European fleet management. In so doing, we’ll perhaps also change it too. In the coming days, Fleet Europe Village, Fleet Europe Forum and Fleet Europe Hall of Fame will provide the backdrop to some of this conference’s many highlights. We’ll have moments electrifying or reflective, there’ll be spaces to meet and do business, but we’ll also have plenty of room for friendship and fun!

The 2014 Outlook
for International Fleet Management Welcome to the Fleet Europe Forum 2013 in Prague, capital of Czech Republic, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. What is the goal of the Fleet Europe Forum? “The aim of the Fleet Europe Forum is to provide all delegates with engaging content, market insight and analysis, and best practice advice that lead to value creation in fleet management. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘The 2014 Outlook for International Fleet Management’.”
Why this theme? “We believe it’s important to look forwards. The car fleet management industry might not be the greatest innovator as such, but it sure is an early adopter of new initiatives in automotive and management. Together with the attendees we want to reflect on how the future of our industry can be reshaped. That’s why we have outlined the main content in three different parts. As we are in Prague, and the Eastern European region brings opportunities to both fleet customers and fleet suppliers, we pay attention to those opportunities in terms of car fleet optimisation in Eastern Europe, with an additional focus on two emerging markets: Russia and Turkey.
Steven Schoefs Fleet Europe Chief Editor
“In the afternoon we open our content scope, and attendees have the chance to learn from international fleet managers who will share their experiences and offer best practice guidance. Data gathering and reporting; fuel management and driver behaviour; the correct allocation of fleet management decisions; and the conditions for a successful roll out of an international policy across multiple countries and regions are vital elements that no fleet manager can neglect. In the third and last part the stage is set for fleet suppliers to share their insights as we explore the product and service offers in the market and discuss how they will shape the outlook for international fleet management in 2014.”
What is your main message for this year’s attendees? “We have a full day with experts sharing their knowledge, and the opportunity to network with friends and colleagues. Together we can not only seize new business opportunities, but also take our industry to the next level. Let’s make the eleventh edition of the Fleet Europe Forum an inspiration for the future.”

Rewarding
Excellence in Fleet Management Sharing best practices and showing successful projects is the best way to inspire the whole industry and to educate the market. How hard is the selection process of the Fleet Europe Awards? “The Fleet Europe Awards are a unique concept in the world, where candidates have to prove their excellence in fleet management and show the impact of their actions. “After submitting an application form, the candidates are invited to submit a full questionnaire (of more than 80 questions) on all areas of their fleet management. Only 10 applications are selected to compete in the final round. “In this last round, the candidates are invited to present their project in front of the jury and to answer the jury’s questions.”
Who is in the jury? “Each year, we select a multidisciplinary jury of around 18 representatives of the industry: international fleet managers, leasing companies, car manufacturers, consultants and the Fleet Europe editorial team. They all gather for a 2-day interviewing and deliberating process.”
Caroline Thonnon Head of Business Development & Global Fleet Leader
How important are these awards? “We can say that being a nominee or winner in the Fleet Europe Awards is a true recognition by the whole industry. The selected nominees really represent the best professionals in our sector!”
What are the award categories this year? “Our main categories are awards for end-customers. They are at the centre of Fleet Europe and all our initiatives. Furthermore, we also award innovative projects, services and products from the international fleet suppliers. And finally, we have the Fleet Europe Hall of Fame Award, recognising fleet executives who have contributed to the profession.”

Not all cyclists are this noticeable Now your Volvo is better equipped to share the road with everyone. Volvo’s new cyclist detection system – a world first – issues an audible alert when faced with a cyclist in close proximity and, if a collision is imminent, automatically applies the brakes for you. Over 19,000 cyclists are killed or seriously injured in car collisions each year. We invented cyclist detection to further reduce accidents for your fleet and your drivers. Visit us in the Fleet Europe Village to find out more.
Volvo cyclist detection with auto-brake technology. Just one example of our 85 years of safety leadership and innovation.

Beautiful city
The unique character of the city is also partly a consequence of its natural environment: Prague was built on nine hills along the Vltava river, which flows through the city for a distance of 31 km and forms a perfect unit with the city. The dominant features of the city’s architecture are reflected in the river: towers, church spires and cupolas, palaces and town houses, along with the greenery of gardens, parks and islands. Prague was founded at the cross-roads of ancient trade routes at a site where the most varied spiritual and cultural currents merged. The history of the city begins with the founding of Prague Castle in the 9th century. The greatest flourishing of the Czech state occurred in the 13th century, which will eternally be connected with the monarch Charles IV, who founded the famous Charles University in 1348, the first university in Central Europe. Nowadays, Prague is an important European city that attracts visitors not only by the abundance of architectural gems the generations of our ancestors left. It is a place where cultural, social and political events of international importance are held as well as a popular destination for trade fairs and congresses.
© Prague Information Service
Prague - the capital of the Czech Republic, has always played an important role in the history of the country and Europe. Since the Middle Ages Prague has been famous as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Origin of the name Prague The Czech name “Praha”, or “Praga” in Old Czech, actually means threshold or doorstep. Scientists originally derived the name Prague (threshold) from the first thresholds in the river, i.e., rapids; however, the river flowed peacefully through the entire area and there have never been any rapids here. Others have interpreted the name as referring to the beams or steps of the wooden bridge over the Vltava River, or perhaps the fascines, or “steps”, which reinforced the ford in the river.
