GREAT LAKES SECTION - ROCKY KLINE

I began my career in archery in 1963, right out of high school after getting a Ben Person bow. At that time, I thought that the great sport of archery would only serve as a hobby. Little did I know, this sport would quickly become my life’s passion. After receiving my first bow, I began hunting with friends from work. After just a few shots my bow fell apart. I went and replaced my Ben Person bow with a new one, only to have the same thing happen again. This initial experience taught me the importance of purchasing high quality equipment and learning how to fix my bows on my own. My second purchase was a Black Widow hunting bow. After using this bow a few times, I loved it so much that I decided to purchase a Black Widow target bow. At some point in my archery career, I discovered PSE bows. The first time I used PSE equipment, I knew it was top notch. Twenty-five years ago, I was placed on the PSE shooting stall.

As my love for archery progressed, I found an outdoor range in my hometown, the Izaak Walton, and spent countless hours there refining my craft. In 1964 I stumbled upon a range in Galveston, IN called The Galveston Archery Club. I have spent the last 58 years shooting at this range as it is still in existence today. In my time with the Galveston Archery Club, I have served in many roles, including president for the last 30 years.

In 1970 I was introduced to the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). I immediately became involved and have now been a member for over 53 years. I have worked on many NFAA committees and have served as the Great Lakes Sectional Councilman for over 10 years. In my time with the NFAA I have participated in and worked many state, national and world tournaments all over the United States.

Archery has brought me many moments of joy. I have been a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts of America for countless years. I have instructed many beginning archers who went on to win awards at the state and national levels. I loved archery so much, that I even took a job at the beginning of retirement at a gun and archery shop in my hometown. I spent the last 20 years working on setting up bows for many of my friends and family members.

The sport of archery has been so good to me. I have made lifelong friends, traveled all over the country and have been able to share priceless memories with my family as we have hunted and shot bows together. I had no idea when I picked that first bow up almost 60 years ago how great of a decision it was for me. Archery has shaped my life in so many positive ways and I am forever grateful.

FINALIST 1

Create Expanded NFAA Academies in Partnership with North Central Elite Archers (NCEA) and Allow Junior Participants to Qualify for All American Status

Offer four NFAA junior academies a year to build the knowledge of all disciplines – indoor target, 3D, field archery, and outdoor target. Each academy, through registration fees, would provide the archer with a sublimation jersey that has the branding of NFAA and NCEA. The North Central Elite Archers (NCEA) currently coaches over 100 archers around the nation and internationally and is comprised of six coaches which offers you consistency of a coaching staff for these academies along with the specialties of our staff. Our staff of six coaches are Level 3-5 USA NFAA certified coaches, certified NFAA and USA judges, exceptional form and bow tech knowledge, as well as a licensed Level III Mental Management © Coach. The chemistry of the staff is excellent and they are having great success putting on independent camps.

There is a potential for these academies to build archers into the sport with the youth emphasis; however, you could also open them to adults or run separate academies back-to-back. The camps could be hosted at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center in Yankton once a quarter. Through the high-end consistency of the coaching staff, the numbers for the academy will grow to a point of cutting it off or capping it which will make it more heavily sought after. Each discipline/academy would have a different jersey design to get more branding out there and encourage repeat archers. The staff is committed to building high level camp agendas that accommodate higher level learning for repeat archers.

All American Status. All American Teams. NFAA is the most patriotic of the three biggest national organizations that play archery. NFAA venues lead the anthem, say a prayer, say the pledge, acknowledge the “do’ers” all in a state of patriotism that we feel would feed into the concept of All American.

All American Status. All American Status would be earned by competing at all of the NFAA national events: Vegas, National Indoor, First Dakota, Redding 3D, Field, Outdoor Target, and the Rushmore Rumble. The status would be commemorated in some fashion that archers would earn simply by their participation. This gets people hooked into the branding as well as the concept that champions are made through seasoning and running the NFAA circuit. Commemoration could be as simple a keychain for their quiver, perhaps, a different quiver accessory, t-shirt, etc. Earning the All American Status could earn the archer $50 off the academy.

All American Teams. All American Teams would be the top 3 or 5 in each division. They get a branded, perhaps even patriotic jersey, along with discounts from vendors. As consumers of the sport, NFAA has the

biggest vendor backing of any national organization. If the big archery vendors gave the All American Team a discount within their product, that would be a huge enticement. The jersey could be a design that is unique to the NFAA. The All American team members could get one jersey for free and order additional ones for the season at their own expense. All American Team members, or the number one of each team, could get a profile in the magazine that NFAA produces. An expansion opportunity of this concept of All American Team would be opportunities for international play with IFAA.

FINALIST 2

Bridge the Gap Between Olympic Archery in the Schools (OAS) and NFAA Events and Provide Coaching Training for Archers Moving on to College

We are a high school archery team affiliated with Olympic Archery in Schools. A few of our students are also NFAA members. We live in the grey area of athletics. Our annual budget covers the OAS league fees. Our coaches are parent volunteers who are Level 2 certified. We are a very diverse team both racially and economically (36% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch).

However, at the launch of this year’s season we had 65 interested archers who showed up each and every week to learn the sport; 90% of whom had never shot an arrow. The interest remained high and we sadly had to do ranking round try outs to cut the team down to 25 due to time, space, and equipment.

We as coaches want to see the impact of archery grow and spread. We want to see our archers discover the world of archery beyond the few tournaments a year offered by OAS and we want to spread archery as far as possible. To do that we have a two-pronged approach. The first prong involves getting our archers involved in NFAA tournaments. With OAS changing their equipment rules to include the use of ILF and carbon arrows. We see an amazing opportunity for our archers to branch out and join NFAA and compete at outside tournaments. Showing them the global community in archery require the funds to have multiple ILF set ups to provide the basic equipment to our students who are starting out or who lack the funds to purchase anything in their lives beyond essentials.

The second prong involves training. We would like to set up a summer camp for our students to get them certified as coaches. With many of our seniors going to college all across the globe we want to see them take their passion for the sport with them. We currently have an archer who founded an archery team with the University of Chicago. That got us thinking what if we sent these kids into the world with all the tools they needed to work with local teams or build their own all across the land. Sewing seeds and growing archery wherever their lives take them. In addition to building a strong network we see these students growing and developing into lifelong NFAA and other archery affiliated network members.

By giving them the foundation in their younger years and providing access to all regardless of economic status we can grow a passion for the sport that will last a lifetime.

FINALIST 3

Create a National Competition Where States Select a Team and Compete for Top NFAA State Awards

Create a progressive tournament starting at the state level to build state teams. In the end, each state will send their top shooters in every NFAA division to a national tournament where the state team will combine scores and compete for the nation’s top state. At the state level a Vegas 450, NFAA 300, Outdoor Target, and a Field Round will be shot adding up the scores at the end of the season to determine who will be on the state team. On a national level all four disciplines would be shot in a 4-to-5-day tournament consisting of the state qualifiers to determine the top state. All rounds will be shot using NFAA rules. A facility big enough to handle all disciplines would be needed.

This would benefit the sport by each team getting spotlights from social media, word of mouth and possibly even televised media for competing for their state and then would draw a lot of attention to the sport.

FINALIST 4

Encourage Clubs to Build More Affordable Field Ranges using the International Round Setup and Create International Round Leagues

This proposed project takes an existing idea from the National Field Archery Association (NFAA), plus a new layout plan to tackle a major problem in the once popular field archery outdoor season. This new “Big Idea” will create an example on how to host a statewide field archery league and allow any club with an outdoor practice range, or existing field course to participate.

This plan can be replicated across each individual state, or even at the national level. To achieve this, our plan proposes the use of the International round, which is easier for clubs (and new shooters) to understand and participate in. The goal of this “Big Idea” is to create a stepping stone for novice or new archers to come into field archery by expanding the general presence of field archery, and by simplifying “the game”.

This proposal is to piggy-back off of the idea of the NFAA’s national field league introduced in Summer 2021, and use it at the state level. To tackle a majority of complaints that people have with field archery, our proposal is to use the International Round, which the NFAA recognizes and has already provided the rules/ regulations for within their Constitution & By-Laws (Article VI, Section D).

By using the International Round, the number of arrows per round will be reduced from 112 to 60 (3 arrows per target, 20 targets total), roughly cutting the time on the course in half. The maximum distance of 80 yards will be reduced to 65, and the creation of a “Novice” class within a statewide field league would allow new shooters to participate at a 50-yard max (youth stakes) for one year. Finally, the International Round eliminates all walk-up and fan targets, making the rules and range setup more user-friendly. Using this format for a statewide league will help create visibility for this game, especially through the use of social media.

Where this “Big Idea” will be the most beneficial is that any club can host this event, even if it doesn’t have an existing field archery range. LaSalle Sportsmen’s Club proposal will utilize the funds to set-up their existing practice range as a de facto “field course” with just six bag targets and common shooting lines to be used (see Diagram B for a range layout). Clubs with limited space can use this format to run their own outdoor leagues, or participate in a state or national league. This is more incentive for clubs and shooters to join the NFAA, as the organization can use this as a blueprint for future use.

This practice range layout is also cost effective, with purchasing everything new, a setup will cost less than $3,000. We feel that this budget is something most clubs would be able to afford, at a fraction of the cost of a full new 14 target typical field range half.

FINALIST 5

Offer Award Incentives for Growing the Archery Community

How can attention be brought to those who are ignorant to the existence of competitive events? How does the information about archery events travel from one source to the next? It can be argued that word of mouth is more effective than electronic or print media. (Although, print or electronic media is crucial for communicating information pertaining to events.) If incentives are offered for those who grow the sport, archers can now focus on growing their local clubs, ASA, NFAA, IBO, and other associations. While many may not need an incentive to include others, these incentives can motivate yet others to grow the sport.

As every competitive archer knows, the coveted trophies, belt buckles, and monetary purses are awarded to the most skilled competitive archers; these archers are the best of the best and have honed their skills to earn the deserved accolades and recognition for their victories. However, what if awards were offered to those who actively grow the sport, especially those who are noticeably bringing others to the “fold” of competitive archery? Would this not encourage at least a few to actively grow the sport? What if an award,

To address these incentives, mission statements can be constructed to encourage a repeatable and resounding mission that shop owners, club heads, and representatives can repeat and pass to individual archers. These recognitions can be issued at state-level banquets and ceremonies.

FINALIST 6

Create Mobile Archery Ranges to Travel and Promote Archery Throughout Each State

Our big idea is to build upon the archery in schools. After researching I found only 9 Private schools have archery programs in Arizona. The public schools don’t like it because they consider it a weapon so I thought with the boom of charter schools in our area I would email a few of the American Leadership Academies (10 Elementary Schools and 4 Junior High/ High Schools). I spoke with a couple of the athletic directors, and they would love to bring archery into their schools as an extra-curricular for the children. So, with that in mind, we wanted to make a portable archery range to make it easier to set up and take down so we can use our time more efficiently. We designed an archery experience using a flatbed trailer.

Our vision is to make archery fun for the kids, when they see this trailer pull up to their school, they get excited and want to participate. The trailer will consist of 4 A frame target stands that can stand up easily that are also affixed to the trailer. We will have different and fun target faces, even customizable ones for the students to create. We want to create interest in archery so this will be a school year program, but they can always sign up to be a member at Gilbert Archery. We have loved to attend competitions for our son in archery and think that is an awesome way to promote archery as well by having fun competitions with built-in awards stand at the end of the trailer. We want to create archery teams within the ALA Middle and High Schools to compete like they would in basketball or football and what a great opportunity for college scholarships. We would need equipment specifically for this program including a trailer, recurve bows, and arrows. I have attached a very rough rendering of the trailer idea but might give you a better idea. Thank you for this how fun it’s been to think of fun ideas to promote archery!

Name a date in the calendar year to be NFAA Archery Day for kids or call it National Bow & arrow day. Have every club join in to this day by offering to the public a FREE DAY ON THE RANGE. All NFAA clubs must agree to this day that is designated.

Offers an opportunity to introduce the sport of archery to the first timers to see how they may like it. Awareness to the sport will only benefit those clubs with new members and to the youths. Having local archery shops advertise this special day along with local media would benefit all. A yearly date for all to enjoy.

FINALIST 8

Promote Archery in Conjunction with National Shooting Sports Month

In conjunction with the National Shooting Sports Foundation, we will conduct an Open House at our range on Saturday 13 August 2022. National Shooting Sports Month is an annual event. This will be our second Open House - 2020 and 2021 were not conducted because of public assembly restrictions - and we hope to conduct it every year in August.

We have the facility and beginner equipment (which belongs to our state’s National Archery in the Schools Program) including Genesis bows, arrows, targets, backstop net, ground quivers, and bow rack. Project is to provide a FREE ARCHERY INTRO to celebrate National Shooting Sports Month. Goal is to recruit new archers to the sport, while also helping local people become acquainted with our range and facilities.

12 scores, tournament info and more at nfaausa.com

Our target audience includes: Youth ages 10-17, beginning archers of any age, casual archers and bowhunters.

The program will include: Archery Safety Brief, Basic Archery Instruction, Determine Effective Range, and Experience Outdoor Course.

To facilitate and enliven the program, we’re looking for some attention-getting items and “take-home” souvenirs. Banners would be displayed on the clubhouse wall and entrance to the range. Wrist bands would identify people who have checked in for the event and the stages they have completed. Other items (water bottles for example) would help the participants enjoy the experience and serve as a continuing reminder of the day they enjoyed ARCHERY!

We are hoping to attract about 100 people (with potential to grow the event in future years).

FINALIST 9

Promoting and Fostering Archery with Foster Youth

There are many organizations and social services supporting Foster Youth. There are a large group of youth who may not have easy access or knowledge of target archery as a way to develop independent skills, physical strength, social skills and awareness, individual achievement and responsibility – youth within the foster system. Camaraderie and the sense of belonging will be a mainstay of this project along with connection to this wonderful sport and our archery community.

This pilot will grow and promote archery to underserved youth in connection with NFAA members as mentors who can grow larger interest with more interested youth in the future. Potential subsequent funding through grants or donations beyond this project will create an ecological cycle to the sport – NFAA to local shops and clubs to youth and then youth who grow with the sport and return to bring in a wider range of youth struggling to connect within our community. And the cycle continues. Currently, there is not another program specific to serving underserved youth through archery in the area.

Presentations to local community members and social services groups, families, and other community entities will be made to get the word out. A simple application and interview process will be conducted. The timeline for this project will be one year.

Outcomes will be provided to the NFAA, local community through local news establishments and our social media pages - shop website, Facebook and Instagram. With the success of this pilot further connections with NFAA and other donors who would contribute to this project would help to expand. Any current funding will support up to 4 youth. However, the pilot will help inform future development of this project to include more youth in the community who may not have the opportunity to participate in the great sport of archery.

Partner with National 4-H Shooting Sports

Join with the National 4-H Shooting sports. In doing this at the National level it will set an example for state and local 4-H clubs to adopt NFAA rules and possibly increase participation in our youth programs. The green 4-H logo is one of the most recognized youth organizations in the world. We should strive to have NFAA and the 4-H partnering together to expand and promote the sport of Archery

Bowhunters Benefit from Competitive Archery

DEVELOP MUSCLE MEMORY

Bowhunters wait all year for hunting season and it never seems to last long enough. But you’re in luck. Many bowhunters have found that competing in NFAA tournaments is a great way to scratch the archery itch. Another big bonus is that competition will improve your bowhunting skills in multiple ways.

Finding bowhunting success and competing in NFAA tournaments both require plenty of practice. Attending even one or two tournaments will give you the motivation and extra practice you need to be polished before hunting season starts.

“Competition helps you develop muscle memory so you can concentrate on making the shot,” says Brandon Higley, the NFAA State Director for Idaho. “You’ll develop a subconscious shot sequence so your entire focus can be on the animal, giving you the most accurate and ethical shot possible.”

ENJOY THE ELEMENTS

The NFAA hosts indoor and outdoor tournaments year-round. Indoor tournaments give archers the opportunity to keep shooting even when the weather isn’t cooperating. Outdoor competitions mimic bowhunting scenarios, giving you practice shooting in all the elements Mother Nature has to offer.

“When you shoot field for example you can really figure out how your equipment performs in different weather conditions, angles, slopes and lighting,” Higley noted.

PRACTICE PERFORMING UNDER PRESSURE

Some bowhunters suffer from buck fever, a sensation similar to what competitive archers call target panic. These nervous feelings often produce bad shots. Shooting under the pressure of competition is a great way to practice managing those nerves so you are better able to perform at crunch time.

“I get butterflies and nervous whenever I shoot a tournament,” Higley said. “Whenever I put hard work into what I’m doing that day, I get nervous so it [hunting] teaches me how to perform under high stress situations.”

LEARN WHERE TO AIM ON ANIMALS

NFAA 3D tournaments give archers the opportunity to aim on large, foam animal targets. The scoring rings on most of the targets are meant to overlay the animal’s vitals. Aiming on an animal form as opposed to a paper target provides great practice for the real deal.

FIND NEW FRIENDS

Competing in archery tournaments improves your skills, abilities and confidence, but one of the most valuable benefits to come from competition might be the friendships.

“Especially if you are new to an area, come to the 3D shoots, you’ll meet a lot of people,” Higley emphasized. “You’ll start talking about hunting and you’ll make some friends.”

Fellow bowhunters are a great resource for information. They might stop short of sharing the GPS coordinates to their go-to hunting spot, but most people are willing to swap knowledge, especially if you’re new to the sport. And you should definitely be prepared to hear some hunting stories.

“It’s a close-knit community,” remarks Higley. “I’ll be traveling with people to a tournament and we’ll talk hunting the entire way there and back, even if it’s a Spring archery shoot.”

NFAA competitions will not only improve your performance and introduce you to other bowhunters, but all time spent with a bow in your hand gives you an edge in the field.

As Higley relayed, “You and your bow are a team, so if you’re not practiced up, you can’t work together like you need to.”

2022 NFAA national Marked 3d RESULTS

Gaius Carter

NFAA professional archer, Gaius Carter, took the time to answer some questions for us after his big win at the NFAA Marked 3D National Championships in Redding, California. Take a look at his responses below!

1. How do you feel your preparation for the 2022 NFAA Marked 3D National Championship helped you?

In 2021 I finished in a tie for 3rd place in Redding. I used the knowledge and experience gained to not only make the necessary modifications to my equipment, but to also strengthen my approach mentally coming into this years event. I took advantage of an opportunity to compete in the Fresno, CA leg of the West Coast Outlaw Tour the weekend before Redding. While it was a much smaller event than Marked Nationals, it gave me a chance to fine-tune my set up in a tournament atmosphere rather than trying to make adjustments from the comfort of my home range. I spent the week leading up to nationals in Redding shooting and getting myself acclimated to the course while simultaneously applying what I learned in Fresno. Doing so allowed me to roll into the weekend with absolute confidence and a clear and concise game plan.

2. How does the NFAA Marked 3D National event compare to others for you?

Personally, I think Redding is the ultimate litmus test of an archer’s all around skill set. It tests an archer’s preparedness in every aspect that the game has to offer. Archers must be mentally and physically tough over 3 grueling days of shooting. Shooters face different obstacles every day, from changing weather patterns to different types of terrain to long wait times between targets. Redding is unlike any other tournament in the sense that most archers will shoot varying parts of the course each day making it impossible to even compare scores until the final arrow has been shot on day 3. In my opinion, marked 3D nationals is the hardest professional archery tournament to win. It brings out the best archers that this planet has to offer and winning it takes a performance closely resembling perfection. It is unequivocally, “The Vegas Shoot” of outdoor archery.

3. What is your favorite part about the NFAA Marked 3D National Championship?

The NFAA Marked 3D championship is the epitome of Safari style tournaments that have dominated the west coast for decades. The long-standing history of Redding is fascinating to me. Clubs all over the country run Redding warm-up events modeled after the shoot. The fact that one club has had so much influence on the sport is humbling and I’m so honored to be a part of its great history. I truly love everything about it and it’s impossible to choose a favorite part, but undeniably what makes this event stand out above every other tournament I shoot is the social aspect. On or off the course, the competitors are always friendly and the event staff are always exceptional. The saying is true; “Once you attend the Redding shoot, you will never miss it again!”

4. What is your favorite NFAA event to shoot?

Anyone who has seen my custom quiver depicting the Bigfoot target from Redding knows the answer to that! Unquestionably Redding. The Vegas Shoot is a close second though, and while I’ve made the Vegas shoot-off in back to back years, I have yet to win that one. It has always been my dream to win Redding and Vegas. I managed to make my dream of winning Redding a reality so I will clean up some things in my indoor game and do everything I can to get a win in Vegas in the coming years. Lastly, I have a soft spot for NFAA field. On any given year you can always expect to see me in Redding, The Vegas Shoot and Outdoor Field Nationals.

5. Was this your first Pro win at an NFAA event and how did it feel?

Yes, this was my first major professional win. I’ve won several other smaller venue tournaments, and I actually won the event in Fresno the weekend prior against some phenomenal shooters. While Redding was technically my first pro win, it’s important to note that it was not the first time I’ve won it in my mind. I had mentally prepared for and envisioned it happening countless times for several years prior to it actually happening. When my moment finally came I felt like I had already been there before, and I was ready for it. Never underestimate the power of vivid imagination. Close your eyes and see it. Do this often enough and when your time comes, you too will be ready.

6. What win do you have your sights set on next?

That’s not a good characterization of how I approach the game. Each event that I compete in all I expect out of myself is to focus on controlling the things that I can control and let everything else go. Generally speaking, I treat every tournament the same. I’m not going to give any more or any less effort to any specific event but to answer the question directly, the tournament I want to win the most is the next one on the calendar.

7. Any advice you’d give to new archers?

Don’t rush and don’t expect too much from yourself too soon. Wanting more out of yourself is great but practice in a way that builds confidence rather than doing things to destroy it. It’s not about the quantity of arrows a person shoots, it’s the quality of arrows they shoot. I have a motto that I live by when I need to focus and center myself. Execute with intent. Whether I’m in a practice session or I’m shooting for score it keeps me grounded and focused on the task at hand. My intent may not be the same as your intent, that’s irrelevant, because whether you’re chasing a 5 dollar bet for closest to center or one final arrow at 88 yards for the win in Redding, every single shot needs to be executed with a purpose.

8. I want to thank the National Field Archery Association and all of the sponsors that make the sport and these events possible. At only 22 years old I am beyondblessed to work and shoot professionally in an industry I genuinely love.

Timothy Oliver Austin

February 9, 1938 - May 11, 2022

It is with a heavy heart that I must say good-bye to Tim Austin. I met Tim in the late 1980’s and worked with him from that time through his passing on May 11, 2022. I’m proud to call Tim a friend, colleague, advisor and mentor through my tenure in the NFAA. Tim was one of the true examples of complete dedication to the sport of Archery! Tim was one of the most dedicated supporters of the NFAA that I have ever had the opportunity to work with. He helped at the inception of the Vegas Shoot in almost every capacity and never ever complained. He traveled several times to NFAA Headquarters in Yankton to help with various projects. He was an integral part of the set up and design of the Field Courses. I felt honored to present Tim with the NFAA Presidents award in 2009 for all of his efforts. Tim had accomplished more in Archery than most of us will ever do or for that matter would want to do! He had held the positions of FA State NFAA Director, SE NFAA Councilman, and NFAA Parliamentarian and served on countless NFAA Committees. In addition to his NFAA positions, he had been the backbone of the FA Archery Association from the 1970’s through his passing. He was involved with the IFAA hosting several NAFAC Tournaments and serving on several committees. Tim also was involved with the NAA as a judge and volunteered for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in Archery for the Field of Play. Tim was also vested in the National Senior Games; he was the competition manager from 1999 until his passing.

Tim was a very devoted husband and father. I had the pleasure of meeting his Wife Barbara on several occasions, his stepdaughters and of course son Oliver. Several years ago when I was NFAA President, I couldn’t travel to the IFAA World Congress and appointed Tim to go and of course Barbara accompanied him. He never stopped talking about what a great trip it was and how much he enjoyed it. Oliver has assumed Tim’s position as the SE NFAA Councilman and I’m sure will follow in Tim’s footsteps!

From the bottom of my heart and representing all the NFAA Officers, Council, Directors and Members, I would like to thank Tim’s family for sharing such a great man with the NFAA and all of Archery! Tim is definitely one of the few that truly understood how to “give back” to the great Sport he loved! Rest in peace Tim and keep a watchful “archery” eye on us all!

With heartfelt condolences,

Tim Austin was recently featured in the Archery Magazine as the NFAA Southeast Councilman. Below is part of the article that spotlighted him. You can also view his full accomplishments here:

USING POSITIVE MENTAL TRAINING TECHNIQUES

and repeat the process several times in your mind. Feel the shot and see the arrow hitting the mark. This repeated exercise will give you the perfect picture and feeling for your mental imagery training. You will experience the form that you want in your mental training, as you develop it in practice and at tournaments. Making mental imagery a regular part of your regimen will give you confidence, ingrain your best shot into your thinking, and carry over into your performance.

One of my students was in the shoot-down round at a tournament. He went to the stake, set his sight, attached his release, and stood motionless staring at the target for nearly a minute. I knew the shot that was soon to follow would be perfect; and it was. This archer had prepared himself mentally to execute a shot with perfect form.

If an archer develops a picture of the perfect shot, he or she can enhance his or her performance in a tournament. It should be both a positive picture and a feeling of the best shot possible. To develop and strengthen your mental imagery and feeling of the perfect shot, make it a part of your routine to go to the practice range and shoot a blank bale with your eyes closed. Relax your body and practice shooting perfect form. Feel the muscles involved and the explosion of the shot. When you are comfortable with this feeling, try to duplicate it without the bow in your hand. Shoot the shot exactly the same as you did when the bow was a part of the process. Next, lower your arms and shoot the same shot mentally without arm movement. You should be able to feel the muscles and the shot execution even though you are not physically moving.

Finally, shoot the same shot, both physically and mentally, at a target. When the shot feels perfect and the arrow goes into the mark, proceed to close your eyes

Mental training is a valuable tool for archers as well as athletes in any sport; and most Olympic athletes use some form of mental training. In archery it plays a very significant role because precise muscle movement and calm concentration regulate archery performance. The use of mental imagery can enhance both of these attributes.

Laura Wilkinson, an Olympic diver, broke her foot in several places and could not physically practice for the Olympic tryouts. She did, however, practice her daily diving exercises with mental imagery. A couple of weeks before the tryouts, she started walking and won her position on the United States Olympic Team. I watched as she stood on the diving platform performing her mental imagery before each dive. Her walking was hampered by her injury, but her performance was not. She went on to capture the gold medal in Sydney, Australia.

As noted earlier, mental training prepares the body both mentally and physically. An archer practices it so the shot can be repeated exactly the same. Even though we think of this process as conditioning the mind, it also trains the muscles and nerves used to execute the shot. We are actually blueprinting the perfect shot in our mind and muscles. When the arrow is set and released in mental training, the same muscles needed to perform the actual shot are affected. The mind sends impulses to those muscles, which in turn programs them for the shot execution. You need to develop trust in your ability to duplicate the shot and not in your ability to score.

Score is the result of using good form. Repeated mental practice makes the shot become more routine, natural, and fluid. The confidence that results allows the archer to perform with ease when faced with a variety of situations and unexpected circumstances.

There are different levels of mental practice, with visualization serving as one part of the process. In visualization, you will see yourself shooting the arrow, just as if you were making the actual shot. You will view the situation while looking outward, rather than from the point of another observer.

Mental imagery is a higher level of mental training and takes longer to master. You are still visualizing the shot, but now you must become actively involved in the experience with your other senses. You are actually creating the complete shot scenario in your mind. You feel the back pressure, the explosion of the shot and the reaction of your bow arm. By seeing and feeling the perfect shot, you can program both the muscles and the mind so the execution can be duplicated under a pressure situation.

Mental imagery is very effective because with practice our muscles actually contract and respond in the same manner as if the bow were in our hands. The only difference is that one will experience very little physical movement. It is essential that you picture the perfect shot with the same rhythm as you normally use because the result will be the shot that you are programming into your mind and muscles. This level of mental practice raises your power of concentration and focus.

Imagery will also help an archer control anxiety, nervousness and muscle tension. The mind can create the tense atmosphere of a world championship. Think of yourself facing some of the most difficult shooting circumstances possible; then, view yourself remaining calm and shooting the perfect shot. Mental imagery will affirm your ability to shoot effectively. Picture yourself in a positive manner and you will have the confidence to perform in a positive manner.
