Grady McGovern

Grady McGovern, born and raised in Northfield, was inspired to paint while taking a college art class. His first painting was a crude mixing of the St. Johns’ Abbey in Collegeville, MN, with the background sky of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. (It was as cheesy as it sounds, but that first inspiration from impressionism continues to inform his work today.)

Todd Lipper

Hooked from that point forward, he went on to earn a Masters in Art Education and has been teaching and creating art for the last 20 years. His favorite subjects are the people and places he loves, so his paintings are mostly of downtown Northfield, Northfield athletes, St. John’s University and its athletes, his son, Jadyn, and self portraits.

Reflections off water have been a fascination and inspiration for Sharol Nau. They are quickly photographed with her pocket-size camera. She also creates drawings and paintings from memory of the reflections she’s observed on creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes or fountains.

Tami Resler

In Clark Kent-style transformation, Tami Resler comes home from her day job as a banker, sheds her work clothes, and dons her grubbies, because it’s time to hit the dirt. Whether parking herself in front of a favorite movie to sculpt or throwing clay on the wheel while listening to an audio book, she finds that time warps and hours pass while the clay takes shape. Often she jots down notes: creatures – a mouse who keeps his cheese in a case to bring with him while he travels, a squirrel who has his own nut case, a rat on his clarinet – or larger issues she can bring to life through clay.

David Allen has been a painter and sculptor for 50-plus years. He tries to capture nostalgic small town moments using acrylic, oil and watercolors. Often he uses snowfall to reflect the beauty of light and the warmth of these themes. Northfield has proven to be a wealth of inspiration in his paintings because of its small town flavor and timeless charm. His metal and ceramic sculptures follow classic themes such as Don Quixote, and of everyday experiences like dog walking, bird feeding and going to the fair.

HOMEOPATHY

Personalized, Natural Medicine Homeopathy, the second most widely-used system of medicine worldwide, offers what we have lost in today’s modern field of medicine: a personalized and natural approach to restoring health. Homeopathy gives importance to understanding and treating the whole person that is behind the disease. This leads us to find a matching homeopathic medicine. Homeo in Latin means similar, and pathos means suffering. So homeopaths find a matching remedy to the signs and symptoms of the person’s diseased state. Homeopathic remedies are FDA regulated. Don, in his late 70s, was recently diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. He was in and out of the emergency room and hospital because of the seriousness of his symptoms. He had lost hope. This questioning revealed, among other things, that he had a tendency to produce so much phlegm at night that it would gag him in his sleep. After reviewing all the characteristics of Don’s case, I decided to give the remedy Ferrum phos LM 1 because that matched his symptoms the best. When I returned to Don’s home one week later, he was sitting on the same recliner as before, but he was looking fresh with a smile on his

Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2019

Speaking of music fans… As you know, if you read my fodder, I turned 60 in April. One of the things I gifted myself is a commitment. Do those two words, gift and commitment, even belong in the same sentence? Yes, in this case they do. I have committed to culturally enriching my soul, my life. It’s not as deep or complex as it sounds. This obligation pertains to the arts, and my commitment to myself to attend or participate in a creative event a minimum of once a month. Whether it is going to an art gallery, or museum, a play, or a live music show. There is no excuse not to do this, affordable opportunities abound in this area to attend any one of these on any given day. One of the things I treasure about life here is the fact that we have a great theater platform, loads of live music venues – from quaint to extravagant, scads of art galleries, and solid museum exhibits. I am pretty happy about this commitment decision, which I actually made last November, and so far I have stuck to it. It brings me joy, and that is a good thing. Speaking of live music… I booked some for my upcoming 60th Shangri-La! I know, I know, my birthday is in April, but I am throwing a backyard party in June. Namely because I want an outdoor celebration, and have a big yard decked out with tropical paradise foliage in the summer. The talented, and pretty cool guy, Dan Israel, accompanied by Mike Lane, is going to bring the rock to my garden, the song to my soul, the music to my party! Speaking of Dan Israel... be sure to show him some love at the Tavern Lounge on Friday, May 3rd! And speaking of the Tavern Lounge… Jessica Paxton, who you may know from 95.1 The One, is the booking agent extraordinaire for Minnesota’s Music City, aka Northfield. She has quite the lineup for the month of May at the Tavern. In addition to Dan, you can enjoy the musical stylings of Nick Hensley, Art Vandalay, Mark Mraz, Joe & Vicki Price, Beebe & Keeley, Maddie Bryant, Peter Klug, Billy Johnson, Laura Moe, Freelance Valet, Jeff Ray, Cannon River Currents, Broken Heartland String Band, and O’Green. Aaaannnnd speaking of music bookings and Jessica… Announcing the Reunion Stage grand opening May 2, 3, & 4! They will have music every Friday night thereafter! And check this out – Actual Wolf, with full band, will be at Armory Square on May 7th! Also, the next time you’re hanging in Minneapolis – Jessica’s brother is one of the new owners of the newly spruced up Parkway Theater, so she has a hand in booking acts there as well! She is one heck of a music fan! Get your fan fannies out there and support creativity! Local music, live theater, dance productions, art galleries – a gift you can, and should, give to yourself. “Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” — Plato

HAPPENINGS Saturday, May 11, continued Fingerstyle Guitar Deluxe featuring Pat Donohue and Jerry Kosak • 7:30-9:30pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater

Grammy award-winning finger-picker Pat Donohue’s devotion to acoustic guitar has made him an American standard as he echoes the tones of Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Merle Travis or Muddy Waters. Chet Atkins called Donohue one of the greatest fingerpickers in the world today. Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.” The music and playing of Jerry Kosak has incorporated the structure and complexity of classical, the soul and passion of the blues, the happiness and drive of Americana and the groove and swing of R&B and jazz. His music has been described as a fusion of rhythmic drumming, grooving bass lines and thoughtfully disjointed melodies, producing “a great reflection of many different styles” according to Kevin Barnes of KBEM Jazz 88. Tickets: $25, available at northfieldartsguild.org, 507/645-8877 or at the Northfield Arts Guild. Beebe & Keeley • 8-11pm Tavern Lounge, Northfield

Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great-grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. Laidback music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.” Adult Night Out: Foodie Feast – Edibles and Outdoor Cooking • 6:30-8:30pm River Bend Nature Center, Faribault

HAPPENINGS Saturday, May 18, continued Truth & Rumors • 7-9pm

The Contented Cow, Northfield

Scottie Miller • 7-10pm Corks & Pints, Faribault

Scottie “Bones” Miller is an American pianist and singer/songwriter born in Minneapolis. His musical style is a combination of blues, soul, funk and jazz. “Sounds like Dr. John meets The Band at Bruce Springsteen’s house. Highly recommended.” Tom Hyslop – Blues Revue Magazine.

Layne Yost: John Denver Tribute • 7:30pm Olde Pine Theatre, Pine Island

The music of John Denver is timeless and well-known. Layne Yost’s tribute pays homage to the music and the man. Yost, McDowall and Shimoda capture the simple soul of Denver’s music through guitar, fiddle and upright bass arrangements. Woven within the music are stories that give insight into Denver’s life and legacy. A wonderful show that will take you back and remind you of simple things that remain true. Tickets: $18 advance, $20 at the door, available at oldepinetheatre.com or 507/491-2639. The Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience • 7:30pm Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault

The Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience is a rare newcomer to traditional pop, fusing a big band spirit with an inventive edge – at once more risky than Michael Bublé, more modern than Sinatra. Johnson, an independent Grammy and Emmy award-winning crooner (and lead singer of the internationally-known vocal group, Tonic Sol-fa) indelibly stamps vocal jazz and swing with a contemporary punch – to the delight of both traditionalists and newcomers – emerging as an original voice in the continuing tradition of the American singer. Tickets: $20 members, $25 non-members, $12 students, available at the box office, 507/332-7372 or paradisecenterforthearts.org/ purchase-tickets/. Theater: The Pink Unicorn • 7:30pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater

See theater page.

Billy Johnson • 8-11pm Tavern Lounge, Northfield “Commitment-free rock ‘n’ roll. While he’s been moonlighting with George Scot McKelvey in the B-Team, former Hillcats singer Billy Johnson proves he belongs on the A-list alongside G.B. Leighton as one of the Twin Cities’ best feel-good, blue-collar, barroom-rousing tunesmiths with his first solo album It’s a Good Life.” (Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune). Johnson has opened for the BoDeans, Five for Fighting, Train, Poco, Paul Thorn, Van Hunt, Lowen and Navarro, Old ’97s and more. More at billyjohnsonmusic.com.

Music in the Park: Vinnie Rose • 7pm

Using a looping effects pedal, Rose layers rhythm guitar, bass and other tracks in real time. Accompanied with a 3¼-octave vocal range and melodic guitar solos, Rose’s live one-man-band show has become a very popular Midwest act. He welcomes song requests from the audience and loves interacting with a crowd. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy local performers playing a wide variety of music for the whole family. Tavern Lounge, Northfield

With anchors in blues, old-time, bluegrass and honky-tonk, this Twin Cities band brings energy and soul with a selection of cover tunes and originals blended from the diverse musical backgrounds of the band’s five members. Joe Nicola holds down the low end on upright bass, Patrick Giblin manages soulful and wailing lead vocals and moving melodies on guitar, Wilson Goss keeps the toes tapping on banjo and the band’s sound is completed by the sometimes dancing, sometimes battling interplay between Courtney Buck’s fiddle and Mark Wiltse’s harmonicas. The Broken Heartland String Band is out to provide a good time with wholesome, partner-swaying, knee-slapping, hootin’ and hollerin’ tunes. More at soundcloud.com/ brokenheartlandstringband.
