Executive update Welcome to the October 2023 edition of Groundswell, where we bring you the latest news and updates from Victoria’s horticulture industry. Spring is now well and truly underway, and we hope it has been a strong start to what is sure to be a very busy season for our members and their businesses.
Simon Gomme President, NGIV
Craig Taberner CEO, NGIV
The last week of August saw NGIV set up shop in Queen’s Hall, Victorian Parliament House for our Annual Horticulture Showcase. We worked tirelessly through the week to advocate for the industry and engage with Members of Parliament, highlighting Victorian horticulture’s vast scope and the benefits it provides to all people across the state. During the Showcase, we spoke to representatives from across the political spectrum, with the understanding that NGIV’s vision for a united, growing and sustainable industry is strengthened with bi-partisan support. We were thrilled to welcome the Hon. Gayle Tierney MP, Minister for Agriculture, as our esteemed Guest of Honor. Joining her, we had the Hon. Peter Walsh MP, Leader of the Nationals, along with a panel of horticultural personalities who shared their passion for horticulture and the highlight the benefits it provides for all Victorians. We’re committed to encouraging MPs to prioritise key areas that matter most to us. We encouraged them to: 1. Commit to improving Victoria’s Green Infrastructure for future climate resilience. 2. Strengthen the resilience of the horticultural industry. 3. Nurture our workforce for future skills and growth. 4. Celebrate the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) and acknowledge its cultural and economic contribution to Victoria.
5. Support the important work of horticultural educators. 6. Open doors to international market access and exports. Highlights of the Showcase included the immersive garden designed by MIFGS Achievable Gardens alumni Josie Wilson and Suzannah Kennett Lister – which prompted many comments from impressed MPs – and our Horticulture Appreciation Day panel, featuring emcee Claire Hooper, Brett Ratten, and Chloe Thomson, who spoke about their passion for plants and how the industry has influenced their lives. We also had horticulture experts from NGIV member businesses on hand to share their knowledge and engage with decision makers about our state’s industry and highlight the role their businesses play. We thank all members and partners who supported this week, whether as industry spokespeople, suppliers or otherwise – we couldn’t have done it without you. We’re thrilled with the level of engagement we had throughout the Showcase, and we expect to keep many fruitful conversations going over the coming months. We’re looking forward to coming together with Victoria’s top breeders, growers and allied businesses for this year’s Australian Horticultural Trials. They’ll be showcasing the very latest innovations in container, bedding, indoor and outdoor plants and allied products. The event will take place between 5 and 8 December 2023, with exhibitor on-site

experiences and online offerings to enjoy the week wherever you are. Trials Week is the perfect opportunity to learn, network and celebrate the innovation of our industry. The NGIV Board and Team extend their appreciation to all the businesses that have renewed their NGIV membership for the 2023/24 financial year. We have had an incredibly positive response since sending out renewal invoices, and we are grateful for the ongoing support of our members and industry partners. NGIV are committed to continuing to support our members to maintain professionalism, enhance performance, and maximise profit; while advocating, promoting and educating key stakeholders on the significance of our industry. We could not continue to do what we do without your ongoing support. As an NGIV member, you have access to many benefits, including:
» Member and industry promotion » Ongoing industry advocacy » Free professional and technical support » Entry to Australia’s leading wholesale plant market, NGIV’s Trade Day
» Opportunities to participate in MIFGS
appreciated the opportunity to network and learn more about the South Australian industry. In the education space, we engaged with some of the savviest businesspeople in the industry as part of the Nursery Business Resilience Program. We brought these expert representatives from NGIV member businesses together to explore business adaptability and resilience and to join in rich discussion about how horticultural businesses can continue to thrive in ever-changing economies and environments. There’ll be plenty more happening in this space as NGIV continues to support our member businesses to be the best they can be. We’ve also been out to Casey Tech School, a shared learning facility that delivers high-tech, leading-edge courses to students from 23 secondary schools in the Casey region. We worked with students to answer the big questions around urban green infrastructure and the importance of green life in our cities with their Flora Drop applied learning project. NGIV not only support our members to help their businesses be the best they can be, but we also aim to foster the next generation of horticulturalists and highlight the wealth of opportunities available to all in this thriving and dynamic industry.

For those looking to begin or take the next step in their career in horticulture, the Grow Your Future website now features an overview of career paths available within the industry, as well as a detailed summary of training and education opportunities across the state. Like the NGIV website, the Grow Your Future site will also advertise vacant positions in the industry to engaged and passionate jobseekers.
We had clear blue skies and a fantastic turnout for our Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria event at All Green Nursery and Garden and Boomaroo Nurseries.
For members, this means that the site will serve as another platform to promote employment opportunities in your business and build awareness of your brand.
As always, the event provided an opportunity to network, tour the site of an industry-leading business, and catch up with colleagues for dinner and drinks.
We’ve been working hard to get this website up and running, and we're excited for you to have a look around.
» A varied training and events calendar » Promotion of careers in horticulture » The latest horticultural news and updates » Opportunites through our Schools Program (VSGP)
Thanks to Peter Smith and Josh Kyne from Team Boomaroo for the tour and Will McIntosh from Mansfield’s Propagation Nursery for emceeing the evening. Also, a special thanks to All Green Nursery and Garden owner Samuel Fragapane and team for hosting afternoon tea along with a drop-in tour.
To all our members, we wish you great success for the remainder of spring and in the busy gear up for the year’s end. We look forward to engaging with many of you over the coming months as we continue to support our member businesses and the Victorian industry.
Whether you’re a wholesaler, retailer or allied trader, all NGIV members are encouraged to attend Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria events, which take place each month. EVENT: ANNUAL HORTICULTURE SHOWCASE
Fourth Annual Parliamentary Horticulture Showcase:
A celebration of Victoria's vibrant horticulture industry By Craig Taberner Victoria’s vibrant horticultural industry was on full display from 28 August to 1 September 2023, as NGIV hosted its fourth Annual Parliamentary Horticulture Showcase at the iconic Queen’s Hall, Victorian Parliament House. This event served as a platform to highlight the diversity and significance of Victoria’s horticulture industry and its importance to Victoria’s economy, the environment, and communities. NGIV’s collective opinion was that 2023 has been our most impressive exhibition yet. Building upon the success of last year’s Showcase, this year we enjoyed deeper engagement with attendees, with the inclusion of the Growing Victoria green wall, the participation of primary school students, and a different focus for each day of the exhibition to keep the audience of policy makers fresh and inquisitive. Kicking off with a flurry of activity, NGIV staff, our garden designers and a team of hard-working volunteers from Sevron worked tirelessly to set up the immersive Showcase Garden in just a few hours. Through skilful and thoughtful design, the garden aimed to demonstrate the beauty and versatility of Victoria’s locally grown flora whilst at the same time celebrating the diversity of our horticulture industry – reinforced by storytelling display boards, interactive materials, and information describing our supply chain and the role of horticulture in our state. Designed by MIFGS Achievable Gardens alumni Josie Wilson and Suzannah Kennett Lister (from Josie Wilson Landscape Design and SKL Gardens respectively), the display garden prompted many comments from Members of Parliament

impressed by not only the sights, but also (perhaps surprisingly) the smells. The official opening and launch of the Showcase took place on Tuesday 29 August, with NGIV President Simon Gomme, Minister for Agriculture the Hon. Gayle Tierney MLC, Jane Edmanson OAM, Shadow Minister for Agriculture Emma Kealy MP, and NGIV CEO Craig Taberner all in attendance to cut the pothos vine to officially mark the opening. The launch was attended by key figures in Victoria’s policy and political landscape and presented a fantastic opportunity for Victorian Parliamentarians and NGIV members to meet and chat to share a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities within our sector. Many departmental and Parliamentary attendees engaged in policy discussions with NGIV staff and members and took the time to chat with students – an amazing group of Grade 4 students from Berwick Lodge Primary School accompanied by Assistant Principal Sanda McCrum, who represented their school and the educational opportunities afforded by our industry proudly.

Appreciation Day For Horticulture Appreciation Day on Wednesday 30 August, Parliament House was host to Claire Hooper, Australian stand-up comedian, television and radio presenter and joined by special panel discussion guests for a session focused on the importance of horticulture, its impact on wellbeing, and the role it plays in the lives of Victorians. Claire welcomed Brett Ratten, former AFL Coach and Carlton football player, alongside Chloe Thomson, Presenter, video producer, digital content creator, copywriter and horticulturist to the stage for an engaging and sincere discussion about their love for greenlife and the industry. They spoke about its impact on them personally, the broader role it plays in fostering connectedness and the importance of horticulture being a viable and rewarding career option for future generations. The panel discussion was well attended and proved to be an engaging way to reinforce some of the key messages of the Showcase.
Celebration Day Horticulture Celebration Day on Thursday 31 August celebrated horticulture’s role in creating vibrant communities and NGIV continued to strongly advocate for the growth of Victoria’s horticultural industry both now and into the future. NGIV called on all Members of Parliament to engage their local schools in the Scarecrow Challenge, fostering environmental awareness and sustainability in both fun and practical ways. support to the inititiave and officially launch the Scarecrow Challenge, to be judged at MIFGS 2024. Celebration Day was also a chance for us to give away some plants as a permanent reminder to Members of Parliament, which is always popular. Many Members and staff had impressively kept their plants from last year alive and were excited to add to, and discuss, their growing collection. This provided further opportunities for engagement and promote NGIV’s policy priorities.
Our policy priorities The Showcase highlighted the importance of the horticultural industry in Victoria and aimed to encourage Members of Parliament to consider and act on our recommendations on some of the policy matters that are most important to us as an industry. We advocated NGIV's updated policy priorities in asking each attendee to:
1. Commit to improving Victoria’s Green Infrastructure for future climate resilience The need to invest in green infrastructure to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability is paramount.
2.Strengthen the resilience of the horticultural industry Recognising the challenges posed by a changing climate and taking steps to ensure the industry’s resilience is vital. GROUNDSWELL OCTOBER 2023

u 3.Nurture our workforce for future skills and
growth Developing a skilled workforce and addressing negative perceptions of horticulture are essential for the industry’s growth.
4.Commit to increased targetted funding of the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show Acknowledging the cultural and economic contribution of MIFGS to Victoria is crucial for its continued success.
5.Support the important work of horticultural educators Investment in technology, infrastructure, and teaching staff within educational institutions is necessary to support the industry’s growth.
6.Open doors to international market access and exports. Exploring and investing in interstate and international export opportunities will expand the reach of Victoria’s horticultural products. By focusing on these policy priorities, NGIV continues to advocate for a stronger, sustainable, and vibrant horticultural sector that benefits all Victorians and reminds the Government, Opposition and minor parties that we rely on their funding and policy support.
Notable guests As the peak body in Victoria’s horticultural industry, NGIV represents businesses of all sizes: from small nurseries to multinational companies. And with the industry employing over 24,100 people across Victoria, we wanted to remind all Parliamentary members that we take pride in our role of

NGIV estimates that over 70% of all Victorian Members of Parliament engaged with NGIV and our members during our exhibition – a terrific result.
A collaborative effort There are many people and businesses we must thank for their contributions to the Showcase: our esteemed Directors and members including Symone Brown, Matt Mansfield and Suzie Shearer for taking part in the official launch, among others, who engaged with Parliamentarians and spoke passionately and professionally about our industry each day of the Showcase; Sevron, whose team of volunteers were instrumental in the bump-in and bump-out of the Showcase; Steve and Biemond Nurseries, who coordinated plant drop offs and pick up; Josie and Suzannah, who built the incredible immersive Showcase Garden; the nurseries who supplied the plants: Haars, Humphris, Biemond Nurseries, Oasis, Warners, Paradisia, Proteaflora, Speciality Trees, with turf supplied by Lilydale, and Powerplants for providing the technology component of the display; and finally, David Reid, who was tireless during the lead up and throughout the week, along with the whole NGIV team. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who supported this week, whether as industry spokespeople, suppliers or otherwise – it couldn’t have been the success we hoped for without you.
Superstar students from Berwick Lodge Primary School.
Many fruitful discussions were had throughout the week.
The 2023 NGIV Annual Parliamentary Horticulture Showcase was a resounding success in celebrating Victoria’s horticultural industry. We intend for this to continue as an annual event and in the meantime, we look forward to continuing to advocate for the interest of our members and our industry with growing esteem.
The road ahead NGIV will continue with our ongoing advocacy efforts, but we acknowledge the substantial work ahead as we seize the policy opportunities created by our Fourth Annual Horticulture Showcase. This is crucial as we pursue our primary policy goals, benefiting both NGIV members and the wider horticulture industry. Advocacy remains a pivotal yet challenging task for us. While we’ve made significant strides in the past six years, your individual and business support is still essential. We urge our members to connect with their local Members of Parliament through collaboration with NGIV, extend invitations for them to visit your local businesses, provide them with our policy booklet, and please keep our office informed about your engagement activities. While the week celebrated horticulture and its dedicated contributors, NGIV believes most strongly that with continued support and investment from decision-makers within the Victorian Parliament, we can continue to strengthen this vibrant and dynamic industry to benefit all.

PROFILE: GRANDVIEW MONBULK
Success through commitment and dedication: Grandview Monbulk By James Nicklen In the lush, rolling hills of Monbulk, Victoria, lies a horticultural haven that has stood the test of time – Grandview Monbulk. With a history stretching back to 1900, this family-owned nursery is a thriving business built upon a commitment to quality and trustworthiness. Purchased and reimagined in 1985 by Dave and Linda Sands, the nursery and its team are dedicated to growing quality plants and delivering them to customers. A glimpse into the business Grandview Monbulk spans two properties – the Invermay Road site, covering 10 acres, and the Moxhams Road property, spanning approximately 7 acres. Each property plays a unique role in the nursery's operations. The Invermay Road site primarily serves as the hub for propagating and small plant growth, while Moxhams Road handles the bulk of the growing, dispatching and order pickups. Dave explains, “As stock becomes ready, it goes down to the Moxhams property to be collated and prepared for dispatch.” This strategic arrangement allows the nursery to efficiently manage its operations and ensure the timely delivery of quality plants to its customers.
A rich history Grandview Monbulk’s story begins in 1900 when the property was first purchased by Dave’s great-grandfather, who lived in a bark hut on site, growing berries and other produce with his young family. They named the property ‘Grandview’ for its spectacular 180-degree views. Over the years, the property was passed down through the generations, witnessing the transitions from carrot farming to chestnut tree growing, before evolving into the nursery it is today. Dave and Linda purchased the property from Dave’s parents and started the nursery full-time in 1985.
The nursery’s product range is diverse and dynamic, with a focus on 14-, 18- and 20-centimetre pots. They produce a wide range of low growing shrubs including natives, Ozbreed lines and Wisterias, catering to both retail customers and the landscape industry. They see the importance of maintaining a balance in their product offerings, striving to keep the list fresh and evolving. Dave’s passion lies in the production side of the business. In some ways, his philosophy is quite simple: “If you grow a good plant, then that’s half the job done or more to selling it.” Grandview Monbulk is renowned for the quality of its plants, and Dave, Linda and their team continuously strive for excellence. Their attention to detail is evident in their pest management efforts. In recent years, Grandview Monbulk has also ventured into Integrated Pest Management (IPM), with younger team members leading the charge. The nursery has reduced its reliance on chemical sprays and embraced a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to pest control. Indeed, sustainability remains an important aspect of Grandview Monbulk’s ethos. The nursery has invested in solar panels, generators, and energy-efficient technologies to reduce its environmental footprint, partly funded through government grants. They’ve also implemented recycling programs for plastics and green waste.
Exploring exciting new varieties Grandview Monbulk is currently focusing on expanding its product range, with excitement surrounding clivias and wisterias. Dave and the team have been diligently working on cultivating a brilliant collection of clivias over the past few years. Drawing on a fellow local breeder's expertise, they are expecting new clivia varieties in exciting colours to emerge from their efforts. They are aiming to present them to customers in larger pot sizes, once they have matured and burst with beautiful blooms.

The decision to focus on clivias is part of Grandview Monbulk’s broader strategy to continue diversifying their product range and meeting the evolving demands of their customers. forefront of the nursery industry. With their strong focus on quality and customer satisfaction, it’s safe to say that the introduction of these new clivia colours in larger pot sizes will be met with excitement from both loyal customers and newcomers to the nursery. Wisterias, another classic favourite, are also being cultivated in larger pots, making them ready for sale with flower buds. “We have been working on our wisteria range and we’ve been bulking that up in the last few years,” Dave says. “We’ve got a few older cultivars that haven’t been widely available in the industry, and I think they’re exciting. Over the next few years, we’re planning to get them up into larger pots and sell them in spring showing flower buds.”

A dedicated team What sets Grandview Monbulk apart is not only its stunning array of plant varieties but also its unwavering commitment to quality and delivering their best possible product. The nursery takes great pride in its team of staff, some of whom have been with the business for decades. One of their key team members is Ted, who has been a face of Grandview Monbulk at Trade Day and has an impressive 40-year history in the nursery industry, 14 of those years being spent at Grandview. Ted’s daughter, Kelly, has now also been with the nursery for seven years and excels at managing dispatch operations.

Dave and Linda emphasise the importance of a well-rounded experience for the nursery’s younger staff members, allowing them to rotate through various roles, from production to dispatch to propagating. This approach ensures that each team member gains a well-rounded understanding of the nursery operations, fostering personal and professional growth and ensuring a resilient and versatile workforce. Both Dave and Linda are very appreciative of all their loyal staff and the fantastic work that they do.
Planning for success The future of Grandview Monbulk looks promising, with Dave and Linda’s son, Tom, taking an active role in the business. Tom’s apprenticeship and hands-on experience have positioned him as an asset to the nursery’s future. Dave and Linda gave Tom the freedom to explore other career paths and were careful not to place any pressure on him; however, Linda admits that Dave might have been, “secretly hoping that one of the boys would follow in his footsteps.”

Dave and Linda recognise the importance of passing on the knowledge and values that have made Grandview Monbulk successful over the years. While Dave remains deeply involved in the production side, he is also committed to looking ahead and ensuring a smooth transition of knowledge and responsibilities. By actively involving Tom and other younger staff, Dave and Linda are not only securing the future of the business but also instilling a strong sense of family tradition and horticultural expertise while ensuring that a robust and knowledgeable workforce that can carry the business forward. In addition to preparing the next generation for leadership roles, Grandview Monbulk’s succession planning extends to their relationships with customers and the wider community as they maintain strong connections with their loyal clientele. By maintaining this trust and loyalty, they are not only securing ongoing support but also setting the stage for a successful handover of the business when the time comes. This approach not only reflects their dedication to the nursery but also their commitment to the people who have made their success possible. It’s clear that Grandview Monbulk’s success is not just about growing plants; it’s about nurturing a vibrant team, adapting to change, and maintaining high standards of quality, commitment, and dedication.

Tree & Shrub Growers visit All Green Nursery and Garden Supplies and Boomaroo Nurseries and SA tour By Jess Wozniak Our Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria members have been very active over the last couple of months as the weather has begun to warm up once again. In August we visited All Green Nursery and Garden Supplies and Boomaroo Nurseries before heading interstate to South Australia for a jam-packed tour. More than 70 NGIV members, Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria members and even some future members headed out the west of Melbourne to see what our friends over the Westgate are getting up to. The day started with sunny spring-like conditions and a drop-in at All Green Nursery and Garden Supplies in Hoppers Crossing. Visitors met the team who provided a great overview of their business and how it has grown and evolved over the past few years. All Green showed off their innovative approach to business with a tour through their recently launched wholesale trade market, as well as their entire site, while sipping on delicious coffee and enjoying the wonderful afternoon tea. All Green recently won the Wyndam City Council Medium Business of the Year award – further underlining the excellent work taking place. After concluding at All Green, the group continued further west to Boomaroo Nurseries for a mind-boggling tour of their huge greenlife and vegetable growing sites in Lara. The tours were led by CEO Peter Smith and Greenlife Business Manager Josh Kyne who opened their doors for an insightful behind the scenes look. Boomaroo shared demonstrations of their technology and provided insight into what it takes to run such a successful business. A delicious Mexican dinner and of course drinks helped fill the void while Will McIntosh from Mansfield’s Propagation Nursery ran a Q&A with Peter and Josh. Thanks to all our friends in the west who helped make the day such a success!
September’s TSG event saw a tour over the border and into some of South Australia’s best nurseries and amazing sites. 25 Victorian members descended upon Heyne’s Nursery, the first stop of the tour and South Australia’s oldest registered nursery. With family and the local community at the heart of its values, Carl Heyne, fifth-generation owner and managing director, showed the group around the impressive and spotless site, explaining how embracing innovation continues to take the business forward, paving the way for future generations. The group even learned some local lingo, and it’s safe to say that Heyne’s is as South Australian as a pie-floater (Google it!) and two silver balls. It wouldn’t be a visit to south Australia without dropping into some of the best wineries the region has to offer. Guests enjoyed an historic tour as well as wine-tasting over a fantastic lunch at Wirra Wirra on day one, before piling back into the bus for our next stop – Poplar Grove Nursery. Jason Scroop, owner of Poplar Grove walked the group around yet another immaculate site in a gorgeous setting with the local birds providing a lovely backdrop of song. Jason described Poplar Grove’s efficient approach to growing plants and the importance his team places on producing the highest quality products. The next stop on our journey was Victor Harbor where we settled in for the night with an informative Q&A from Dr. Sam Stacey, Technical Manager for ICL. u

Sam talked about some interesting trials being conducted by ICL, looking at the early establishment and growth of trees and shrubs in the landscape, after they have left the nursery with the aim of determining the effect of good nutrition (controlled release) and wetting agent on tree survival, early growth and establishment under a wide range of conditions. Day two started with a visit to Currency Creek Arboretum with self-confessed ‘gum nut’ Dean Nicolle. Dean created the arboretum as a result of his deep-rooted passion for the over 1000 species of Eucalyptus. He busted myths, walked the group around more than 900 plantings that he and his partner Annette regular monitor, while explaining his process of collecting seed from the wild and his approach to the strategy of the arboretum. His passion was so palpable that even a brown snake joined a small part of the tour before thankfully retreating. Lunch was at The Lane winery for another well-earned three course meal, more wine tastings and a bit of fun with a Eucalyptus-themed quiz led by emcee extraordinaire Heath McKenzie of AGS and Dean Nicolle. The tour’s final stop was at Freshford Nurseries in Cudlee Creek with yet another insightful tour. Ben Freeman, managing director, shared insights into the most effective tree planting methods as well as the some of the challenges posed by the pesky local kangaroos. All members and non-members are invited to join NGIV’s monthly events, and we encourage you to get along and meet some fellow Victorians in the industry, all while learning from businesses at the top of their game. NGIV extends a heartfelt thanks to:

PROFILE: SOUTHERN PLANTS
A green legacy: The evolution of Southern Plants By James Nicklen Situated on an orderly and carefully managed 92-acre property in Dromana, Victoria, Southern Plants has blossomed over the decades into a thriving world-class horticultural enterprise with a rich history, an innovative present and a promising future. Mark Jackson is now at the helm of this journey and has a unique insight into the past, present and aspirations of the business that started as a family venture and has grown into an important legacy. Tracing the roots: A family farm The Jackson Family’s nursery background stretches back to the 1940s, when Ralph Jackson (Mark’s Grandfather) worked at Alsop’s Nursery in Camberwell. After returning from World War II in 1946, he and his wife Lorna leased an existing nursery site in Springvale.
“The business evolved from growing seedlings inground and lifting them to be sold wrapped in newspaper, then in wooden trays. Later, it was growing plants in jam tins before eventually growing in plastic pots,” recalls Mark, reminiscing about the early transformative stages the nursery underwent. It was during this period that the Jacksons laid the foundation for a culture of excellence and quality, focusing on providing the best plants for customers. From its humble beginnings, the nursery shifted locations, moving from Springvale to Dingley in 1960, expanding its scope and offerings to also sell to the public on weekends. As the years passed, Ralph’s son, Bryan Jackson, took the reins and embraced the challenge of building upon his father’s legacy. The business moved to Springvale Road in 1978 and changed its name to Gardenworld. Soon after, Bryan recognised an opportunity, and Gardenworld became a fully-fledged garden centre with complementary tenant businesses and became an inaugural member of the Plants Plus co-op.

GROUNDSWELL OCTOBER 2023
Working seven days a week and with his family living on site, the nursery was Bryan’s passion. His vison saw the business continuing to strengthen its offering and the opportunity for a standalone wholesale nursery to supply not only Gardenworld but the broader industry. This journey led to the establishment of Southern Advanced Plants next to Gardenworld, but within a few years it outgrew the site, leading to the purchase of the
PROFILE: SOUTHERN PLANTS
property in Dromana. Here, Bryan began growing advanced-sized plants, before the 1990 recession prompted them to shift to 6-inch and 8-inch pots. With that, the mentality adapted to focus on providing solutions rather than mere products, with a goal to maintain a steady supply of high-quality plants. Mark grew up on site at Gardenworld and regularly visited Southern Advanced Plants. He worked there while at high school and all through university where he completed degrees in business. After completing his studies, he travelled to the US to work at Ball Horticulture’s head office and met his soon-to-be wife, Pilar, also working in the US Horticulture industry. Pilar, having grown up at her Spanish family’s nursery and with her later experience working for a US plant label company, was a perfect partner to help develop Southern Plants into what it is today. While Mark was overseas in 2007, he and Bryan made the decision to sell Gardenworld. Mark says, “that allowed us to completely focus on Southern Advanced Plants and putting all of our effort into it going forward.”

As Southern Advanced Plants flourished, Mark, Pilar and Bryan continued to travel, collecting knowledge of the world’s best practises and products from the most successful horticultural enterprises around the world. Recognising trends across the world, Mark saw the need to adapt and evolve with changing times, and Southern Advanced Plants embraced the principles of lean manufacturing, streamlining processes and reducing waste, while continuing to always maximise customer value. They continued with the incorporation of technology, such as all-terrain forklifts and conveyors, which helped to virtually eliminate lifting and moving plants by hand. This marked a shift towards efficiency while maintaining the highest quality and improved the OH&S standards of the team. “We never reduce quality,” Mark says. “We’re always focused on the quality and adding value for the consumer.” Today, Mark oversees the business’ operations, now known as Southern Plants, the name change in 2021 reflecting the wider product mix they now grow and helping to unify their established consumer branded ranges.
Innovations and sustainability The emphasis on sustainability plays a crucial role in Southern Plants’ evolution, emerging as a cornerstone of the Southern Plants identity. To power their fleet of electric vehicles, the company recently invested in solar power, with the eventual aim of becoming completely energy self-sufficient. Mark emphasises, “We see sustainability as paramount,” and it's evident that every aspect of the business echoes this sentiment. Plants at the Dromana site receive only natural sunlight and heat to ensure they are ‘hardened off’ and ready for retail. The property collects rain and irrigation water in dams and processes it to the highest standard in their recycled irrigation system. They use environmentally friendly specialist premium potting mixes of composted bark (no imported peatmoss) and slowrelease fertilisers. Southern Plants prides itself on its environmental credentials. Their pots and labels are made from 100% recycled 22

polypropylene (PP5). The pot and label can be recycled together through council-run curb side recycling and the closed-loop PP5 Collection Point recycling scheme at participating nurseries.
A unique approach Southern Plants is unique for a very large wholesale nursery, choosing not to propagate their starter plants. Instead, they partner with only the best propagation specialist businesses, to ensure they have the highest quality starter plants, best new genetics and the ability to react quickly to consumer demands. The Dromana site acquired in the late 1980s was strategically selected for its geographic benefits: its Mediterranean-like micro-climate close to Port Philip Bay, access to Class A recycled water and proximity to freeways for efficient logistics. Southern Plants offers an extensive range of product lines tailored to suit home gardeners and landscapers. Each variety undergoes rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure it meets Southern Plants’ stringent quality standards. By prioritising hardiness, low maintenance qualities and aesthetic appeal, Southern Plants ensures that their plants thrive in Australia’s climate and look spectacular in the garden.
Ranges and relationships The Jacksons’ foresight and commitment to innovation have paved the way for Southern Plants’ diverse and innovative product range. From “Mighty Tuff” plants selected for easy care and low water requirement, to the “Nature’s Nectar” range of Australian native flowering shrubs, each offering is designed to solve specific gardening challenges and needs. The “Home Harvest” range, focuses on edibles, highlighting their dedication to empowering home gardeners, while “Bloc It,” is a range tailored for fast-growing hedging and privacy solutions. Their “Small Spaces” range comprises of compact, colourful, elegant plants to beautifully make the most of confined areas where planting options are limited. Finally, plants in the “Shades of Colour” range are shade tolerant, colourful and low maintenance.
PROFILE: SOUTHERN PLANTS
These ranges not only provided functional benefits but also established Southern Plants as a solutions-oriented company. “At any one point throughout the entire year, we’ve got over 120 different products available on our list,” Mark says. Throughout its evolution, Southern Plants has nurtured more than just plants. The company has fostered lasting relationships with its dedicated staff, supply partners and customers. Key members of the team have been with the company for decades, embodying the spirit of family and loyalty that defines Southern Plants. Referring to his team, Mark says, “We’re very proud of our exceptional team and culture.”
Looking ahead: Cultivating a green legacy Looking ahead, Southern Plants will continue with a focus on expansion and innovation. Plans for increased water holding capacity, alongside a self-sufficient electricity supply through solar energy and batteries, emphasise the company’s commitment to sustainability. Mark and Pilar envision Southern Plants as a legacy, both for their family and for the environment. They draw parallels between the nurturing of plants and the nurturing of people. “We want to create a legacy of re-greening the planet with a sustainable habitat for future generations,” Mark says. “We believe we already have a legacy in our over 75 years of business,” he says. “And now, we’re planning for the next 75.”

GROW YOUR FUTURE
Grow Your Future Program: Cultivating careers for new recruits By Youna Angevin-Castro Launched in in early 2023, Grow Your Future is an NGIV initiative, supported by the Victorian Government through Jobs Victoria. The program aims to attract new job-ready workers to the horticulture industry, by combining paid training, work experience, horticulture education and mentoring support to set candidates up for long term success within the nursery and green life sector. According to Program Lead, Rachna Horn, the program has on-boarded close to 90 candidates, with many workers now permanently employed in the sector across a variety of roles.
“The whole intent of the program is to make the transition into the horticulture industry as supportive as possible, so that it’s a win-win for workers and employers alike,” Rachna said.
“The program has been well received by the industry, with a number of nurseries and other allied businesses using the program to actively recruit staff into their businesses. The pre-screening of candidates means that they can save time in filling roles, with the added benefit of knowing that the candidates receive ongoing support from the program to grow and thrive in their jobs.”
Nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce
As part of the recruitment process, candidates receive three days of paid pre-vocational training, designed to build confidence, as well as an additional three days of introductory horticultural training, exposing them to the diversity of the industry. Incoming workers also have access to a structured mentoring program in the first six months of their engagement, which sets them up for success as they find their feet in their new roles.
Yarra View Bushland Nursery is the largest social enterprise nursery in Australia, employing approximately 85 nursery workers living with disabilities. They produce over three million plants annually, predominantly for commercial landscaping and infrastructure projects. Helping workers with disabilities to realise their full potential requires a supporting workforce with diverse skills and backgrounds – a task which has become increasingly challenging, says Yarra View’s General Manager, Scott Buckland. “For many years now, it's been difficult to attract people to the nursery sector and get them to stay and make a career of it. It can be quite a transient workforce, and over time we’ve found

that we’re losing quite a lot of the skill and experience required to grow and develop our industry,” Scott said. “The Grow Your Future program has really helped us attract people that really want to make horticulture a career. It’s bringing different types of people to the industry, who also see horticulture as a potential long-term career. The beauty of the program is that it works through some of the initial challenges of recruiting someone new to the sector by providing initial training and setting them up for success in the early stages of their horticulture career. Our hope is that once someone has spent a couple years in the industry, they’ll want to stay.”
Scott and Shaun from Yarra View Bushland Nursery.
One of Yarra View’s success stories is Shaun, who joined the nursery through the program six months ago. “Shaun has settled in well. He initially started with us part time, and then transitioned to full time, and now has been promoted to a supervisory role – it’s been an amazing outcome for him.” It pays to keep an open mind during the recruitment process, said Peta Featherstone, General Manager – Business Operations at Sevron Environmental Contractors. “Historically, finding people who are looking for long-term work has been a challenge, which is why being part of the Grow Your Future has been a positive initiative for our business. Through the program, we’ve found workers who probably wouldn’t have been on our radar – people with more of an office or corporate background who were looking for a career change,” she said. “Knowing that they had come through the program and that they understood the nature of the work, meant that we were able consider candidates that wouldn’t necessarily have captured our attention through normal channels. It’s definitely opened our eyes.”

GROW YOUR FUTURE
Shaun, Yarra View Nursery Six months ago, Shaun Hardy was looking for a career to align with his interests, when he came across the Grow Your Future program. “I love working in the outdoors, working with the earth and I was holding out to find something that was attractive to me,” he explained. Initially joining the team at Yarra View Bushland Nursery as a nursery hand, Shaun’s natural leadership skills saw him quickly promoted to a supervisor role, where he now leads a team of 4–6 people. He believes the program has played a pivotal role his development, offering both a comprehensive introduction to horticulture and valuable leadership training. Despite the rapid pace, the program “piqued my interest,” Shaun reflects, especially appreciating the insights into team leadership and people management. For Shaun, the benefits of working in a nursery are multifaceted – it’s the camaraderie with his team, the refreshing outdoor environment, and the hands-on experience with plants. While he lives by the philosophy of taking “one day at a time,” Shaun sees himself happily rooted in his current position for the foreseeable future. “I’m pretty happy doing what I’m doing at the minute, so we'll see where it leads,” he said. To those considering a similar path, Shaun’s advice is unequivocal – jump in. “The environments are supportive… it really helps,” he encourages, seeing the potential in the evolving program and its ability to cultivate passion in the horticulture industry.
Andrew, Sevron Environmental Contractors Meet Andrew, a 30-year IT veteran who turned a new leaf by swapping computers for plants through the Grow Your Future program. After a corporate career, which included working at in organisations such as IBM, NAB and Victoria Police, the shift to horticulture was a breath of fresh air for him, quite literally. “I like getting my hands dirty,” he confessed, contrasting his new active role with the sedentary desk work of his past. “What attracted me in the first place to get this position was I'm looking to grow my education in this area. I’ve always loved plants and greenery and hearing the initiative that the government's put forward about the improving the tree canopy is an important thing that I'd like to be a part of and to help that happen.” As part of his new role, Andrew maintains over 2000 garden beds throughout the Fitzroy and Richmond regions. Every morning at seven, Andrew and his team meet at the depot, loading up trucks and discussing the day’s activities. "We do cover a lot of ground, and it’s enjoyable work. You also get to bounce ideas off the team – you’re not just working alone," he said. With a passion for the environment, Andrew found the three-day horticultural training valuable, providing foundational knowledge that has been useful in the field. Looking to the future, Andrew sees a long-term future for himself in the industry, with plans to obtain a horticultural certificate and potentially teach or consult. "I do see myself working here for the foreseeable future, but eventually I’d like to pass on the knowledge that I’ve learned,” he said.

GROW YOUR FUTURE
u Across Melbourne, at Ball Australia, HR Manager Sharon White
has been pleased with the quality of the candidates she has employed through the program. “It’s hard for the nursery industry to attract good candidates at the best of times. It’s not the most highly paid sector, and the work can be repetitive, so it’s not necessarily high on the list of desirable careers. That said, once we find the right people – those who are interested in plants and green life – we don’t tend to have a problem with retention, which is why Grow Your Future has been a positive for us,” Sharon said. Sharon believes that the pre-placement training means that candidates are more likely to come to work with realistic expectations of the nature of the work. She also believes that the opportunities for upskilling and further training this sets the scene for participants to experience professional, and personal, growth. “We have a lovely lady, Xing, who is from China, who has positively bloomed throughout the program. She came to us with very little English, but a passion for plants, and she’s been a real delight. In a short time, we’ve not only seen a huge improvement in her English, but her confidence has grown too. She’s now a lot more independent, she’s learned to drive a car, and she’s comes to work every day beaming from ear to ear.”

The Climate Assessment Tool The Climate Assessment Tool (CAT) is a free-to-use webtool which removes some of the uncertainty from trying to select tree species for a future climate that, at present, we can only imagine. To do this, the CAT requires only 3 things:
» A location » A tree species » A selection of 1 of 3 climate emission scenarios Mean Annual Temperature has been found to be a good proxy of environmental factors which influence plant health and mortality and is used as the key for scoring suitability. The CAT looks at records of known observations for the species, both in its natural distribution and in cultivation, and specifically at the MAT of the locations of those observations. It then compares the MAT of those observations to the MAT of the predicted future climates of 2050 and 2090, using emission scenarios laid out by the UN’s IPCC. By looking at the MATs of where a species is known to grow now, some insight can be offered as to how suited it may be to a location’s future climate.
microclimate, etc., all influence a plant’s health and performance. A scoring of red does not necessarily mean a species will not grow in a future climate, and for that matter, a scoring of green does not guarantee that it will, although the odds are definitely better. The CAT is not intended to replace the many considerations of plant selection or be an absolute answer regarding climate suitability. However, as climate change progresses and historic horticultural observations and experience are no longer
applicable, the CAT can be used in that stead. The future is unknown, but we are not entirely unprepared. The CAT was developed by the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Dr Dave Kendal of Future Nature, with financial support from the International Association of Botanic Gardens. The CAT, along with guidance for usage and interpretation, can be found at http://cat.bgci.org.
There is always more to a plant’s success or failure than climate alone. Soil texture and chemistry, water and nutrient availability, competition, predation,

PROFILE: EVERGREENCONNECT
EvergreenConnect: Increasing efficiency across the nursery By Christina Gnezdiloff Running a nursery is a complicated business. In its simplest form, it begins with deciding what to grow, progresses to undertaking the production required, growing the plants until they are ready to sell, finding a buyer for the plants you have grown and then going through the sales process, with the desired outcome being money in the bank. The best way to achieve this outcome is to understand how your business is operating through all these stages and identify ways to improve your efficiencies. In a modern world, increased efficiency is often achieved through technological additions and changes to your workflow. This can be done by using the technology of the EvergreenConnect; Inventory Management, Marketing Platform and Sales Management tools. EvergreenConnect mission statement includes, “To improve business efficiency for nursery and associated Greenlife industries.” In striving to achieve this, we aim to improve business efficiency for our customer base across the full range of plant nursery functions. Our technology seeks to drive efficiencies via technological developments throughout our customers’ businesses.
In the potting shed: EvergreenConnect Potting Records allow staff to use a tablet within the potting shed to instantly record batch data for potting up without the need for potting sheets to be completed manually. Whilst this is the last stage of the production planning cycle, we have seen examples of nurseries using as many as five different spreadsheets and printed reports to go from production planning to potting. Using the EvergreenConnect Inventory Management System completely removes the multiple spreadsheet chaos.
Out in the field: Recently released for testing is the EvergreenConnect Field App, targeting a range of functions field staff would normally complete by creating paper-based forms. Utilising the app
on a mobile phone, field staff can record items such as stock movements, stock deaths and batch merges directly into EvergreenConnect, resulting in greater efficiency but also minimising the chance of errors and double handling of a simple and constant task. Being a cloud-based app, means existing devices (smartphones) can be utilised, rather than requiring additional hardware to be purchased.
Digital Ordering in the office: Listing plants for sale and enabling the distribution of live availability lists electronically to the customer base, aids the nursery to reach all their customers with one task, using EvergreenConnect as a marketing platform. Efficiency is also gained by the buyer utilising EvergreenConnect. Buyers no longer need to print out, fill in and email back order request forms, this is all done electronically through the order form provided by EvergreenConnect. Delivering the order directly into the grower’s inbox and the EvergreenConnect Sales Management tool. Growers that make the best use of this also increase efficiency by minimising their “over-sells”. Just imagine the time saved by not having to contact customers to advise on over-sells or having to help with substitutions. A more efficient office environment enables nurseries to have a higher output of work for the same energy consumption. All these business efficiencies can be gained by implementing the EvergreenConnect technology across your nursery.

RETAIL STATE OF PLAY
SPONSORED BY:
Grower visits were so positive for garden centres GCA members in Victoria continued their networking with suppliers in August by visiting nine grower sites. I feel that all parties gained significantly from these visits, and we will plan more for 2024. We were shown many of the propagation areas, saw firsthand how labour-intensive growing plants can be and were treated to looking at and early ordering of newer plants and specific batches. All the growers were clearly investing in their businesses and this positivity gave us a feeling that all is well in the industry. When you see major growers investing it gives you confidence to invest at retail.
The visitors and some staff at PGA.
We also saw innovation at grower level, particularly in the way they handle plants. Mechanisation was a key for some, but you cannot overcome the need for people to finish the plants before dispatch. Thank you, growers and Garden Centres, for supporting the GCA initiative. INDUSTRY NEWS
Celebrate your workers with Spring Blueming By John Walsh More than ever, it feels like the world needs the benefits of the garden industry. We are a large part of the solution to climate change. We also know that as people’s everyday lives become more stressful, plants and gardens play an increasing role in supporting the mental health of our population. Of course, the garden industry, through Horticulture Innovation Australia, have invested in programs designed to aid our response to these challenges such as Greener Spaces, Better Places and Plant Life Balance. All very worthwhile and focused on the end user. Another issue we face as an industry is the difficulty to attract and retain staff. This is, of course, not unique to the nursery industry, with most industries reporting difficulty in attracting staff. At the same time research shows that staff are looking to find work that is more meaningful. Work that is good for the planet and gives a sense of purpose.
Most of us in the industry don’t step back and acknowledge the beauty we provide to the community: the physical activity, beautiful houseplants, and the satisfaction of growing your own fruits and vegetables. So, whether you work in propagation, growing on, making pots, or potting media, your efforts need to be highlighted and celebrated.
ICL has responded to this challenge by ensuring that our tag line ‘Impact for a Sustainable Future’ has real meaning to our staff. ICL measure how our staff are engaged and enabled to make this impact in an everyday sense. This is done in many ways and measured by an Employer of Choice Survey.
Spring Blueming is your opportunity to sign up. ICL will send you a pack with information and inspiration to make it easy. You can raise some funds for Beyond Blue if you choose; however, the most important aspect is to thank your staff for what they do.
As part of these initiatives, ICL has an active Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) programme. This is one of the ways that ICL ensures it staff are fully engaged and enabled. ICL does this to ensure that it is an employer of choice, as this is what gives a real competitive advantage in business.
We have had some fantastic past Spring Blueming Ambassadors, with Jason Hodges, Costa Georgiadis and Joanna Cave. This year we are pleased to say that our colleague Roger Boyle has accepted the role of Ambassador. Roger has been a major driver for Spring Blueming. In over 40 years of working in the industry, across so many segments, Roger knows what a difference the workers in nurseries make. Roger is battling a brain tumor, and as he put it, in all my ups and downs in life the industry has been beside me. You can scan the QR code to hear Roger’s message and sign up for Spring Blueming.
As part of the ESG initiatives ICL encourage staff to volunteer in their local community, and at least once a year to come together as a group to do a company volunteer activity. The Australian and New Zealand team decided three years ago to create Spring Blueming as this activity. It is a simple idea of inviting businesses in the nursery and garden industry to host a function for their staff. Most companies have hosted a morning tea or lunch. ICL provide a video to play at the function, highlighting the amazing work that your staff do to improve the mental health outcomes of the community due to their actions.
It is a small way to help ensure that your business and our industry is an employer and industry of choice. The week to hold your activity for Spring Blueming is during the week commencing 23 October.

TRADE DAY REPORT
Trade Day report By Nan Cleven
August Trade Day saw early signs of spring, with daylight a little earlier and buyers a little keener as we all prepare for the traditionally busy months ahead. After our very memorable 40th anniversary celebrations in 2018 – back in the Caribbean Gardens days – now another five years on and August 2023 marks the 45th Anniversary of Trade Day. A great achievement everyone – very well done! And for September, after what seemed a long cold winter, a cool and overcast spring day at KCC park began this busiest season of the year for the nursery industry.

NEXTGEN: ROSE COLLINS
Interview with NextGen
ROSE COLLINS Nishiki Nursery Where do you work and what is your role?
Who has inspired you on your journey?
I’m the General Manager at Nishiki Nursery. I make sure everything is running efficiently and help in each department ensuring we get the highest quality of plants out the door each day.
Growing up in the UK, I didn’t know anything about the horticulture world. Coming to Australia I was so impressed seeing my mothers-in-law’s ‘Frankenstein’ fruit trees where she would graft multiple varieties as I’d never seen anything like that before. I got into the industry at an indoor plant wholesaler and very quickly my house became a jungle. I wanted to learn more about outdoors and found Nishiki. The owner, Steve Boekel, really got me inspired. He always has so much knowledge to share and really gets me excited about the plants we’re working with.
How long have you worked there and how has your role progressed in that time? I’ve been at Nishiki for 2 years, I started working as a nursery hand in Dispatch then became 2IC before becoming Dispatch Manager in my first year. Over the last year I moved onto Office Manager and have recently taken on General Manager.
What is a typical day like for you? What do you enjoy most about working in horticulture? The plants! I love being around trees all day and learning about new varieties and methods of growing. There’s always something to learn.
I normally start my day in the office, but no day is ever the same. I do a bit of everything from office work, customer relations and social marketing to digging, pruning, and potting. I help in dispatch loading trucks and doing deliveries or aid in inventory management and training. I’m currently learning to graft too.
Why should more young people choose horticulture as a career? It’s a great community, people are very supportive and happy to share knowledge. It’s wonderful to be in an industry that has so many opportunities and room for growth.
What is the best piece of career advice you’ve received on your journey? Do what you love and love what you do!
Tell us a bit about you; what you enjoy doing outside of work? I’ve lived in Australia for seven years now, coming for a ‘holiday’ when I was 19 and never left. I love exploring and camping. Walks with my partner and pup. Going to gigs and seeing friends. I’m always busy, but I like it that way.
