FROM THE EDITORS
W
ELCOME to the first issue of the LOCAL Mag. Our first issue has been a labour of love and there are many people to thank for their help in getting it off the ground. Firstly, I’d like to thank our first issue advertisers – thank you for understanding our vision and supporting this publication. Without you, we would not have been able to do it. Next, I’d like to thank Nicky Brown for her design talents and for being a great partner to work with. Nicky is truly a local and it’s her love of Tenterfield and the New England area that has helped drive this “idea” into reality. Lastly, we hope you enjoy our first issue and look forward to hearing your feedback on what you liked, not liked or what you’d like to see in the next issue!

SUPPORT LOCAL
Top Ten reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local Here at the Local Mag we are all about supporting local businesses and providing a resource for businesses and locals to connect and support each other.
home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit.
Buy Local -- Support yourself:
Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation
Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.
Support community groups:
Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.
Keep our community unique:
Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community
Reduce environmental impact:
Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. Get better service: Local businesses
often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.
Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A
marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small
businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.
Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.
Put your rates to good use: Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. Encourage local prosperity: A
growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
REDUCE STRESS & HAVE A BATH Epsom Salt is the best way to bath. From reducing stress to flushing out toxins, they will give your entire body a wonder bath, both inside and out. Epsom salt is not actually a salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. This little gem is not a recent discovery, in fact, the benefits of Epsom salt have been known for hundreds of years. This salt can help to relax the nervous system, soothe back and muscle pain, heal cuts, treat cold and flu symptoms. Plus the salt draws toxins out of the body and helps the body lose weight. The magnesium and sulfate are easily absorbed through the skin, and help the body absorb nutrients, and hormones like insulin, which has a significant effect on the overall running of the body. It also helps flush toxins and ease migraines. Dr Mehmet Oz, host of the Dr. Oz Show, claims that once the salt is absorbed through the skin it flushes out any environmental toxins. These toxins can stay in the body for years and the removal of them can automatically bring your weight down. If nothing else, anything that removes toxins is a good thing for your body. It is great for sore muscles after a weights workout, or hard cardio, as it relaxes muscles. If you’re working out a lot or very stressed, health experts say you should aim for three Epsom salt baths a week. You can buy epsom salts at most supermarkets, chemists and health food stores.

SPRING SORBET Check out some of our local boutiques for some similar styles. Pretty pastels round off harsh edges and soften the outlook in a way that makes you want to dive into their diluted depths and blissfully shake off your woes. Comforting and warm, there is nothing more soothing than a lovely lilac or a gently washed blue. Add a touch of metallic and you are set to go Pastels work terrifically offset against more neutral territory, offering up a hint of colour interest without the full blown hit of brighter shades. But, that’s not all they can do. Team with white, and you have bright and pretty, mash with black and the look transforms to sultry and rich. Lemon sorbet, mint and peachy keens can add a light touch to a space or act as a subtle foil to zingy pops of neon.
