HEADLINE SPONSOR

2019

September 6, 2019 Athena From hundreds of nominations whittled down to just 45 finalists by our independent judging panel and category sponsors to another fantastic night out and mystery theme – the Niche Business Awards are back for their fifth year. The night will give the local business community a chance to celebrate the success of local companies. As always, this year’s awards will be held in the Art Deco building of the Athena, which is right at the heart of the cultural quarter. Built in 1936 by Arthur Bullivant as an Odeon cinema that accommodated over 3000 guests, the Athena has stunning architecture and really complements this year’s theme. Since opening in 2005, the grade II listed building has retained much of the original decor. Our headline sponsor is Paradigm Wills and Legal Services for our fifth awards; and the event will feature live acts, themed entertainment, an exquisite three-course meal, and a chance to network at one of the largest events of the year. This event looks set to be bigger than ever, with it completely selling out months before!

help to inspire, motivate and connect different businesses, ensuring the continued success for hundreds of enterprises based here in Leicester. With Leicester being the home for many businesses we have been particularly excited to talk to and learn from some of the champions of our city who drive business locally and globally. I wanted to take a minute to thank the business professionals who have taken time to talk to us and feature in our September issue as we aim to continue putting Leicester on the map. As many of you will know Niche is a large part of our parent company, Cross Productions, which has over the past two months been involved in a series of exciting events. Working with Export Champions, organising round table lunches for clients to first birthday celebrations for businesses. It’s a positive time of year for many businesses despite the uncertainty around Brexit. Home to not only a whole array of successful businesses but also numerous charities who help our local community, we are proud to have had the opportunity to support different charities in their own quests to improve lives and support families across the region. We hope you enjoy the issue and look forward to hearing back from you about what you have enjoyed, so we can continue to offer a magazine that inspires, educates and supports other businesses. Enjoy!

BUSINESS NEWS LEICESTERSHIRE

Jigna Varu appointed CCO, Micro-Fresh International Leading freshness ingredient brand, Micro-Fresh, is delighted to announce the appointment of Jigna Varu as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) for MicroFresh International. After attending the University Of Roehampton in Middlesex studying Biomedical Science Jigna joined Micro-Fresh in 2013 as part-time Client Services Assistant and quickly established her positioning within the company as she took responsibility for establishing relationships with Home Centre in Dubai, where the Micro-Fresh brand is now seen throughout the Emirates as a feature in Home Centre Bedding ranges. Jigna was also behind the launch with John Lewis Quilts and Pillows in 2015, and the John Lewis Baby and Nursery Range in 2016 - a pivotal moment to the growth of Micro-Fresh. She said: “I’m excited to take Micro-Fresh to the next level, being recognised as a globally trusted household brand; we aim to turn MicroFresh into a verb – with people saying something along the lines of ‘has that t-shirt been Micro-Freshed?” Initially developed in 2006 as an anti-mould agent, Micro-Fresh technology is incorporated into products featured in retailers such as John Lewis, Debenhams, M&S, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. The invisible freshness agent prevents odours in footwear, bedding and homewear and is hypoallergenic.

The Micro-Fresh brand is regarded as an added value product by over 50 retailers. The international company has a 45% year-on-year growth, and with nine offices around the globe and the main office in Leicester, the company are looking to expand and open a new office hub in the UK soon. Jigna is now responsible for overseeing all commercial aspects of the business on a global level as well as continuing to play a key role in meeting the company’s aggressive growth goals whilst nurturing the firm’s outstanding reputation for innovation and delivery. Jigna will also oversee the second phase of the business “Home Fresh” where the Micro-Fresh technology is used to prevent mould growth in plaster

for bathrooms and basements and ensuring your home is as fresh and clean as possible in paint and wallpaper. Byron Dixon OBE, CEO of MicroFresh, said: “with Jigna’s drive, energy, hard work and passion we are thrilled to have appointed her as CCO. Working alongside someone of Jigna’s calibre is a great endorsement of our strategy and ambition. She has earned the respect of our customers, suppliers, overseas offices and local team and is perfectly placed to head up the commercial aspects of Micro-Fresh as we continue our ambitious plans to grow and develop” Jigna Varu CCO, added: “It’s been a heady last 18 months for the Micro-Fresh business. Amongst other achievements we have been listed in the Sunday Times Fasttrack 100 Ones to Watch, been featured in the worlds most trusted newspaper, The Times and even being on the BBC news as one of the innovative companies in the East Midlands alongside being appointed as an Export Champion by HM Government Department Of International Trade! We have a tremendous opportunity to grow further and continue to diversify into new sectors, bringing our strong business values and innovative technology to match the demands and high expectations of our clients. We at Micro-Fresh are in an excellent position to capitalise on the growth opportunities presented by improving markets. MicroFresh’s brand, values sit close to my own and I am excited to continue on my own personal journey of growth within a company I know and trust. It’s great to be part of the team that will take MicroFresh to the next level.”

Doctor to cycle 340 miles for charity Leicestershire doctor, Dr Sam Khan, is set to cycle 340 miles in aid of the charity that funded her PhD - Hope Against Cancer. This incredible gesture will take place between the 14th and 17th of September when Dr Sam, 32, and other participants will cycle from Leicester Racecourse in the renowned biennial Tour de Hope, this year named the 2500 Furlongs Cycle Challenge. The route takes riders on a veritable tour of horse-racing venues. They’ll cycle to Doncaster, York, Hull and finally back to Leicester. 08 | NICHE

Currently, Dr Sam is researching the impact of curcumin, a component of curry ingredient turmeric, as a prevention agent in bowel cancer. This research could be crucial in discovering new ways to stop cancer. And Dr Sam knows she couldn’t have done it without Hope: “My PhD has been the foundation for my career, and I’d never have managed it without the support and belief of the Hope team. The very least I can do is spread the word about fundraising - and the best way to do that is to get back on my bike!” hopeagainstcancer.org.uk/.

YEARS

Success Drives LBF into its Fifth Year

T

he 2019 Leicester Business Festival, headline sponsored by Leicester Castle Business School, De Montfort University (DMU), takes place from 28 October to 8 November. Some 100+ events are expected to be part of the programme, which is already looking in great shape to showcase the region’s innovation, commerce and culture with floods of applications now being received daily from across the region. The Business Festival is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. It has continued to grow in presence over the years and surpass expectation, driving inward investment, aiding economic growth, showcasing the region whilst always supporting the community it represents. 2019 will see the Festival top an outstanding 35,000+ attendees, a marketing circulation of 225 million and involving over 6,000 businesses since its launch in 2015. The Festival’s growth, prominence and focus on showcasing the success of its business community has resulted in some exceptional examples of collaboration, inward investment and moreover, the bringing together of a community for one common purpose, personal, business and economic prosperity. More than one third of the 35,000+ visitors have visited from outside of the Midlands. The festival has continued to shift up a gear, year-onyear and whilst it continues to be the region’s largest business event; supporting, nurturing and showcase its community, it has also quickly become seen as the region’s ‘annual economic showcase’ on an international level and all without losing the original drive to support, promote and bring together the local business community.

a passion for the region and who know the benefits of working here. “We have also ensured the Business Festival continues to evolve. Each year there have been new developments including changes in sectors, the introduction of venue partners, coffee hubs, the App and improvements to the brochure. Our focus is now on bringing a greater national and international presence to the Leicestershire region to enhance the economic growth and inward investment value that we know the Festival can bring.” Anyone can apply to run an event as part of the programme. The theme can be about anything, so long as the event stands to benefit the businesses and people in the region by creating a forum where others can listen, learn, share, engage, network, question or debate. Another aim of the business Festival is to drive interest in Leicester and Leicestershire from an investment, or business development perspective, and events that help to positively place this region in a national spotlight are also welcome. This could include economic, sectoral or investment showcases or events that debate or address national business challenges. Scott Charlish, head of East Midlands financial planning at Brewin Dolphin and chair of the Business Festival Steering Group said, “We are already seeing a really terrific Festival programme coming together with some exceptional headline events ranging from national conferences and economic showcases to really useful sector-based events.

Within the first two years, it became so successful that Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (the founding partners) were able to hand the Festival back to the business community - for whom it was originally established, and it became a Community Interest Company (CIC) with the operation and delivery being managed by Associate Events.

Engagement from the local business community has shown to be very encouraging. The amount of businesses involved through sponsorship, attending, hosting or running an event is up by 16 per cent on last year and an overwhelming majority of attendees (65 per cent) were from the private sector.

Alister de Ternant, (left) managing director of Associate Events has been involved in the Business Festival from inception. He said, “When we first talked about the business festival concept nearly six years ago, never in our wildest dreams did we imagine it would be so successful so quickly. There was obviously an appetite from the business community for engagement and growth.

OUR PARTNERS, SPONSORS & SUPPORTERS

“Leicester is by far the biggest business festival and it is the second largest B2B [Business to Business] event in the UK. With an average of 7,000 attendees each year, it has continued on a journey of success - both in itself and for the region. It’s no coincidence that there has been an upward momentum of investment and prosperity since the Business Festival was introduced and although the Festival is not the only factor in this, it has certainly aided Leicester and Leicestershire’s position on a regional, national and national stage. It has brought together like-minded people who all share

First-time Business Festival event organisers were responsible for running 45 per cent of events. Businesses involved with the Festival were all different sizes - not just SMEs (small to medium-sized enterprises) as might be expected. Twenty-four per cent of those involved were from large companies (with more than 250 employees) whilst just over 25 per cent were SMEs, and 42 per cent had less than 15 employees. New attendees were drawn to the Festival by the events on offer as 47 per cent of people indicated that the Festival was the first business event they had been to inthe past six months. Helen Donnellan, director of Business Engagement at De Montfort University said, “It’s extremely important that DMU and Leicester Castle Business School play a prominent role in the Business Festival. Universities are integral to the local economy from providing outstanding R&D [Research and Development] facilities that can help innovation and product development, to internships, placements of highly educated graduates and undergraduates. “The Business Festival really does create opportunities that are second-to-none, but businesses do need to get involved to see where it might lead.” Applications to put on events as part of the Festival programme close on 4th September. An event organisers’ handbook and handy tips on how to run a great event in the Business Festival are available online at www.leicesterbusinessfestival.com/downloads. One giant leap Leicester is set to be the UK capital of space-related research, innovation and skills development following further investments and funding in space and earth observation research in the city. Sarah Harrison, City Centre Director, explains more

T

The University of Leicester’s new Manufacturing, Engineering, Technology and Earth Observation Research Centre (METEOR) has received £13.75 million funding through the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF). This funding will leverage a further £50 million of investments in space and earth observation research in Leicester. The UKRPIF award is the largest funding award made to the University in its history. UKRPIF requires double-match funding from

non-public sources, and the funding for METEOR has leveraged co-investment from a range of project partners, including Airbus, Lockheed Martin and Thales Alenia Space. METEOR will be a key part of Space Park Leicester, a new, worldleading research innovation and teaching hub that will bring together academic research, from sources including University of Leicester, and industrial space and Earth observation R&D. This internationally unique approach to understanding

and delivering space capabilities will position the city of Leicester at the cutting edge of UK space technology. The Centre will revolutionise how satellites are conceived, designed, operated and produced, as well as how data derived from them is interpreted and used to solve real world problems. Space Park Leicester on the former John Ellis School site, off Abbey Lane neighbouring the National Space Centre, is due to open in late 2020. Industry partners will be able to

develop new services and technologies with the support of academic researchers, with invaluable access to a flow of talent and a vibrant innovation community. These applications and services will support a variety of sectors beyond space, including agriculture, environment, transport and logistics, retail, financial services, energy and health. Professor Edmund Burke, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, said: “We are so delighted to have been awarded the METEOR funding. Leicester has a reputation for developing cutting-edge space technology, with University-built instruments in space every year since 1967. City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “Space Park Leicester will be a major asset to the city and Leicester’s Waterside, and it will help to regenerate this currently unused site. “This is a huge opportunity to make Leicester the UK capital of spacerelated research, innovation and skills development. “By working closely with the University, LLEP and the National Space Centre, we can realise this ambition and attract more investment, research activity and high value jobs to Leicester.” When completed, the estimated benefits of the Space Park to the regional economy are £715 million a year and 2,500 jobs in the wider supply chain.

The National Space Centre The National Space Centre was launched in 2001 to get people excited about space and help develop the next generation of scientists and engineers. Since launch, the Centre has welcomed four million visitors and grown its reach internationally via a burgeoning reputation for exciting exhibitions, wonderful storytelling and a breadth of education programmes. It has launched the award-winning National Space Academy and NSC Creative production company. It has welcomed astronauts, made films for royalty and sent experiments to the International Space Centre. In 2016 The National Space Centre launched Vision 2025: More Space, Greater Impact – an £8 million capital programme to deliver new programmes, accommodate more people and raise the Centre’s standing as an international centre of excellence for science communication. Three major projects have been delivered to date and Project: Blue Dot will complete Vision 2025. Through satellite data we can deliver an instant, real-time

health check on our home planet. Only through marrying it with data from airborne and groundbased sensors can we present conclusion and solutions. Solutions to challenges in farming, fishing and forestry; in mining, shipping and weather forecasting, and in disaster management. Project: Blue Dot will present satellite data in an exciting, easily accessible manner and provide a world-class forum for debate. Blue Dot will provide 850m² of exhibition, classroom, meeting and conference space where the very latest satellite data will be presented in hi-tech format for explanation, assessment and debate. Scientists and science communicators will provide regular updates both on-site and online, and data sets will be presented via user-friendly photographs, maps and graphics. Blue Dot will have a capacity for 300 delegates and is expected to host a wide range of meetings, seminar and conferences. 0116 299 4444 Visitleicester.info NICHE | 11

The Lionheart Academies Trust, a Leicestershire-based multi academies Trust, is made up of nine schools: six secondaries and three primaries. With a planned expansion to include schools by 2021, each school reflects its own unique community. The celebration, bringing together students, staff and supportive friends and family, celebrates the achievements of Year 13 leavers throughout the Trust and awards students in their individual faculties for their attainment, effort and progress throughout Sixth Form. Student of the Year awards are also presented for outstanding contribution, sports personality, academic excellence and outstanding creativity. This year the Trust will also hold their first KS4 Celebration Evening which will celebrate the

achievements of Year 11 leavers throughout the six secondaries. Key contributors to the success of the annual Student Celebration Evening are the local businesses the Trust partner with. In the past businesses including Cross Productions, Leicester Racecourse, Pedigree Filbert and Corporate Architecture Ltd have sponsored individual awards. In return, businesses are acknowledged throughout the evening and gain exposure to families in Leicestershire as well as the future workforce. Local businesses further support schools in the Trust through careers talks and fairs, placement opportunities for students and mock interview preparations. Modern recruitment practices The current employment market is at an all time high, sitting at 76%. This success is not set to slow down any time soon, but with more jobs available and less candidates to fill them, employers are facing new challenges of increased competition – with many having to work smarter to attract talent to sustain their growth plans.

Current trends: Candidate driven market: with a continuous influx of jobs, candidates are in the driving seat. With more options for employees, businesses are finding themselves in a position to win over potential recruits by offering more than the competition. Attitudes are changing: as younger generations come through, they require more from a role than simply salary, these include: flexible working, holiday allowance, career progression and brand reputation. Skill shortages: 57% of vacancies are going unfilled due to a skill shortage across industries. As a result, the counter offer has risen significantly, with less employers wanting to leave seats empty, impacting productivity.

How businesses can respond: In order to stand out within a crowded market, businesses need to be looking at their current brand positioning by asking themselves the following: What makes you an employer of choice? Do you have a strong brand reputation? Are you an ethical employer? Is your business flexible to meeting employee needs? How appealing is your current benefits package?

These are just a few of the aspects which are attracting high talent within the market right now. With times quickly and frequently changing, it is more crucial than ever for business leaders to differentiate from competition by thinking differently and creatively about the processes in place to attract and retain staff. For a free consultation and some tips on how you can attract and retain talent by promoting yourself as an employer of choice, get in touch with us.

NICHE FEATURE

Caroline Peverett Türner & Co The standout feature of The Turnaround CEO is practicality. I have no doubt that Amanda knows her business theory and has a wealth of personal experience too. However, when she works with me the complete focus is on me and my business issues and how these are going to be resolved or tackled specifically and practically. It’s personal. Everything feels tailored to what you need rather than a formula that’s followed. It’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach. There is nothing woolly and purely theoretical when working with TTCEO; there are no references to theories, just practical workouts that Amanda enables you to progress through. She gives you the direction and prodding to find your own solutions (so they’re the ones most likely to work for you!) Working with Amanda doesn’t have to change your life, if you don’t let it or want it to. But when someone with her experience and enthusiasm is focused on you, your business and your role, your opportunities become so much more available and reachable.

Stav Melides Glyvolution

Amanda understood what I needed from the very first informal meeting and she was able to offer me a tailored solution. Working with her has allowed me to keep my focus on the value that I offer. Amanda won my trust and she can communicate with me in a kind of a special way which feels very authentic. She tells me things that must be said – especially things that I don’t want to hear, as these are the areas from which we can develop and grow. She has helped me to minimise my weaknesses, and focus on my strengths, starting with small ‘wins’ to build a positive company culture. The changes may seem small from the outside, but they have had a profound effect.

Amanda seems to be able to get to the core of what needs to shift within a leader to help change the culture of a company from within. After a tumultuous few years, Amanda has helped me to refocus and grow the business at a point where I wouldn’t have thought growth was possible. Her practical tips and advice have helped to give me the confidence to believe in myself and the team, resulting in increased turnover, defined priorities and better all-round performance of the business. Her flexible and tailored approach is perfectly matched to your unique business and with her, you can feel that she is passionate about turning it around. NICHE | 15

BUSINESS FOCUS

Investing in innovation PwC’s Innovation Benchmark Report, which surveyed executives in over 1,200 companies reported that 61 per cent of executives who say their companies are investing 15 per cent or more of their revenue in innovation also say strategic alignment is their biggest challenge. How do you ensure your investment in innovative ideas and products aligns with your company vision and culture?

HAVING A CLEAR VISION AND STRATEGY FROM THE BEGINNING OF WHAT YOUR BUSINESS DOES AND HOW YOU’RE GOING TO DELIVER THIS IS ALSO ESSENTIAL TO CREATING A WELL THOUGHT THROUGH INNOVATIVE APPROACH

DR NIK KOTECHA OBE Chief Executive of Morningside Pharmaceuticals

I

Innovation embodies the improvement of something that has come before, and it’s the companies that do this best which are the ones that will ultimately have sustained success. This often means considering measured risks, such as taking a holistic approach to the whole business while ensuring investment is made in people and training. Ultimately the businesses which seek to make continuous improvements will close the biggest gaps and identify the newest opportunities. When it comes to innovation it’s essential that businesses invest in infrastructure, regular training of people and embrace new technologies and R&D. Having a clear vision and strategy from the beginning of what your business does and how you’re going to deliver this is also essential to creating a well thought through innovative approach. When Morningside Pharmaceuticals was founded we took a long time to agree our company’s mission, which is “making quality healthcare an affordable and accessible reality throughout the world.” Every word in our mission means something and is the cornerstone of our business. The work that went into this has proved invaluable throughout the years, as it’s acted as a constant reminder for our employees about what our company does for our customers and patients. Guided by our vision and values we embarked on a strategy to build infrastructure and embrace challenges with

heavy investment. For each sector, investing in innovation will look and feel different. For us in the pharmaceutical sector it meant investment in Research and Development. This led to the research, development and launching of new niche generic molecules. This enabled us to develop novel ways for people to take their medicine, such as under the tongue Buccal tablets and Prolonged Release tablets. By taking this approach we have used innovation to offer patients and pharmacists greater choice. Since our inception we’re proud to have grown from a garage start-up to now one of the 100 largest companies in Leicestershire, which has exported to more than 100 countries internationally. This growth has allowed us to invest heavily in Research and Development, year on year, to achieve over 240 licensed medicines in the UK, many of which we distribute twice daily to hospitals and pharmacies. We also demonstrate our mission and values through our support for a wide range of international, national and local good causes connected to sport, education, health and community. One of our most ambitious sponsorship endeavours to-date was the renaming of the 3,000 capacity Leicester Arena to the Morningside Arena, Leicester. As part of our partnership, we are delighted to be able to offer good causes the use of the Arena’s conference facilities for free, in order to support their fundraising activities.

According to PwC’s Innovation Benchmark Report, which surveyed executives in more than 1,200 companies, the 61 per cent of executives who say their companies are investing 15 per cent or more of their revenue in innovation also say strategic alignment is their biggest challenge. How do you ensure your investment in innovative ideas and products aligns with your company vision and culture? To me investment in innovation doesn’t automatically mean investment in the form of money. For an innovation to really work we need to invest not only money but also time, research and always be open to strategic change to get the project fit for purpose. Our Community Interest Company (CiC) Koi Sports invest heavily in initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable and thriving British grassroots sports sector, one which is inclusive, safe, affordable and

accessible for all. The companies objectives are to deliver a financial investment into a wide variety of projects that will improve sports facilities, enhance safeguarding provision, increase participation in sport amongst minority communities and support crime prevention. One such project is Aylestone Park Football Clubs “Breakfast League’. Innovation in business to me is, quite simply, one of the main building blocks for growth aspirations and future-proofing any organisation, as we all know if we don’t evolve or innovate our businesses will close. We have clear examples of this from the high street – from Woolworths to Debenhams – where they embraced the digital world way too late and I would argue probably underinvested in customer experiences and also their people. We all know an unmotivated team is not good for anyone as we move to a more digital-based society. The main area you hear

organisations investing in is automation, however this word has some very serious and real consequences and the problem all business leaders have is how far do we push it and what value do we put on the human element of a business? For example we employ around 160 people in the UK and USA which is also growing, but being a digital business, do we push towards the ‘Amazon’ style business model in search of more profits – or do we look at the moral and social impact that by moving this way more aggressively we may not need as many of our fantastic workforce? My company is privately owned,

so I am luckily in a position that it’s my decision and I simply could not chase profit over humanity. At the same time, we want to give our customers the best experience possible so I fully agree that 15 per cent would be a fair amount to invest into innovation onsite and offsite. But I really would like business leaders that are in search of the ‘Amazon’ dream to make sure that this 15 per cent had part tech and part human innovation – which could even be looking at the social side of your company. So, for example, look at your retention levels and if they are below your expectations then don’t underestimate the power of a motivated and happy workforce. NICHE | 17

“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle” Sir Winston Churchill

Entrepreneurs’ Relief

Cutting through the confusion Changes to entrepreneurs’ relief are continuing to cause much confusion, with many shareholders unsure as to whether their transaction still qualifies. Before the changes came in, most people with shares in a trading company expected to pay capital gains tax at just 10% rather than 20% when they sold their shares. To be eligible they simply had to show that their shares were in a company that traded (i.e. not in an investment business), they were an officer or employee of that company and they held at least 5% of the shares (giving them voting rights), all for at least a year before the sale. But, in the Autumn Budget a new ‘test’ of what defines ‘personal company’ was announced, with shareholders now needing to have the right to 5% or more of the dividends as well as to 5% or more of the proceeds if the company is wound up or, alternatively, to 5% of the proceeds if it is sold. And all the qualifying tests must be satisfied for two years, not one! Some business owners are unsure whether their transaction qualifies for capital gains tax at all. Their concerns relate to the anti-Phoenix rules which affect people who wind up their company but then carry on the same or similar business either in another company or in some other form. In such cases the proceeds of the winding up might be treated as income from dividends, not as a capital gain, so the business owner pays tax at 38.1%, the highest possible rate of income tax on dividends. This can happen where the company has sold the trade or wound it down, and the company is liquidated to release the proceeds. I am frequently asked to advise on whether those rules will apply Another common issue is whether a company is a trading company. This can be a problem for companies that have accumulated large amounts of cash which they haven’t distributed to shareholders, or where profits have been used to buy investment properties, as investment activities are not trading activities. If you are concerned about how the rule changes affect you, please get in touch. We are experts in entrepreneurs’ relief and can guide you through the complexities.

Retirement income drawdown Income drawdown was introduced in response to the perceived inflexibility of annuities, and the demand by those with larger pension funds to have more control over their retirement investment for the next 20 years (or beyond)

I

Income drawdown is available via Flexi-Access Drawdown. Flexi-Access Drawdown is available without reference to an annual minimum guaranteed pension income. Clients may have existing Capped Drawdown plans; however, this is no longer available for people going into drawdown for the first time. Flexi-Access Drawdown allows you to take variable withdrawals directly from your pension fund, so the amount and frequency of your withdrawal can change from time to time, to suit your circumstances. Withdrawals are subject to the highest rate of income tax you will pay on your total income. It is also possible to take lump sum benefits from your pension fund by way of an ‘Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum’, in which case 25 per cent of the payment will be tax-free and the remaining 75per cent subject to

the highest rate of income tax you will pay on your income. You may, for example, decide that you only need to take small withdrawals in the early years, and retain a contingency fund for medical care when you are more vulnerable in later life. Other features of income drawdown include: ◆ The option to take your tax-free cash only and elect to take no income. ◆ The ability to ‘phase in’ the start of benefits. Larger funds will enable you to take a series of taxfree cash sums before drawing a pension income. ◆ If you die in drawdown, the fund can provide a pension for your surviving spouse or civil partner or pay a cash sum to any beneficiary (taxed at the recipient’s marginal rates of income tax if you are aged 75 or over). ◆ If you take income withdrawals

YOU MAY, FOR EXAMPLE, DECIDE THAT YOU ONLY NEED TO TAKE SMALL WITHDRAWALS IN THE EARLY YEARS

from UFPLS or Flexi-Access Drawdown you will be able to continue to make pension contributions that can receive tax relief up to the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA) of £4,000. ◆ If you wish to retain the standard £40,000 Annual Allowance (AA) you will only be able to access your tax-free cash entitlement and take no income/lump sum withdrawals. From April 6, 2016 anyone with total income from all sources above £150,000 saw their Annual Allowance reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £150,000. The maximum reduction is £30,000 – reached if your income is at least £210,000 – which would result in an Annual Allowance of £10,000. 01455 286 800 sjpp.co.uk/cfp

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances. NICHE | 21

Financing Leicestershire’s business community 2XL Commercial Finance are established in Leicester as the go-to people in business, property and commercial finance

H

Having worked with many brokers over the years, Darren Willoughby believed there was a gap in the market for brokers offering quality and knowledgeable solutions to businesses and property owners searching for finance. “We are now firmly established in the Midlands and we are proud to have supported so many local businesses in securing commercial finance, enabling them to grow, develop and take their businesses further,” Darren said. It has been a hugely successful year for 2XL Commercial Finance, placing just over £76 million of commercial lending and also opening three more offices across the UK. Darren commented: “Leicestershire is a vibrant business community and with myself heading up the East Midlands office it’s great to work with the business and professional community who refer clients to us, and also to have a positive impact on the growth and expansion of so many different businesses across the region.” 07736 359 413 2xlcommercial.com darren@2xlcommercial.com 24 | NICHE

The Clients Design Studio Architects Design Studio Architects are an award-winning architecture practice in Leicester. They had been growing quickly and soon outgrew their rented premises, so decided to look at acquiring their own premises in the heart of Leicester. After they were introduced to Darren he quickly set about getting them a market leading deal. Keshiv Sudera, Managing Director of the firm said: “We approached Darren fairly late in the process for the purchase of our new offices, however he was able to sort out what was required in good time and provide a rate which we were struggling to obtain ourselves via our own bank.”

Hammer and Pincers This superb well-known, award-winning restaurant in Wymeswold, had the ability to purchase their premises from their landlord, having rented the premises for several years. After being introduced by a lender to 2XL Commercial the clients were then interviewed, and a fantastic deal was acquired on very good terms. Daniel Jimminson, the owner of the building, commented: “Darren helped us through all the various stages in a way that we could understand, and explained the best way for us to achieve the funding we gained. All in all, a hassle-free experience that was completed within the timeframe Darren outlined at the start of the process; we would highly recommend 2XL.”

Jake & Nayns’ – Food Attraction Ltd This hugely successful national food manufacturer had the option to purchase the premises, which they currently rented from the landlords who were selling their 15,500 sq ft office, production and warehouse building. Having spoken to their financial adviser they were introduced to 2XL Commercial who sorted them a fantastic deal in the market. Managing Director Jake Karia commented: “I would strongly recommend 2XL Commercial for lending support. Darren acts very diligently and comprehensively to your needs and from this finds the suitable and practical source of funding. His communication throughout the process was top class.”

New Era Properties These clients wished to add a new commercial property to their portfolio, but more importantly the premises were going to be used to house their own building company which had continued to expand. The client was passed to 2XL Commercial via a residential mortgage broker who didn’t deal in commercial property. MD Luke Coltman commented: “Darren was professional from start to finish – once the deal was approved with the bank, he was still involved, communicating by phone and email. We will be using 2XL for our next investment without a doubt.”

Universal Textiles Universal textiles specialise in the distribution of textiles across the globe. Having outgrown their premises, they eventually found an iconic property in Leicester spanning 27,000 sq ft of internal space as well as potential room for further expansion. The clients were referred to 2XL Commercial by their accountants. MD Ravi Karia Commented: “The outcome we found was fantastic and Darren used his market knowledge to get our existing bank to reduce its pricing considerably and enable us to keep a good relationship with our lender, saving us thousands. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to others.”

Al Rawada investments Al Rawada are a development company that had acquired a piece of land in Leicester with planning for 11 flats. Having previously spoken to a broker, who failed to assist on terms suitable to then, they were introduced to 2XL Commercial finance by their architect and they stepped in to assist. The Director of the firm commented: “I believe that I was well looked after from start to finish, and all my needs were met by Darren at 2XL; I would be more than happy to recommend 2XL Commercial going forward.” NICHE | 25

Grandparents’ Rights Can you fight to see your grandchildren?

The breakup of a family has a devastating effect on parents and the children if not handled properly. It is often overlooked that it is not only the parents but the wider extended family such as grandparents who can suffer in these situations. This can be heart-breaking for grandparents

16 | NICHE

NICHE FEATURE

O

Often, they have enjoyed a close relationship with their grandchildren and then find their contact is denied by one or both of the parents after the breakup. Seeking the advice of leading Leicestershire Family Law firm Glynis Wright & Co, we focus on what grandparents can do to assert their rights. Glynis Wright, Head of Glynis Wright & Co Family Solicitors and President of the Leicestershire Law Society said “If the breakup of the children’s parents is a hostile one, grandparents have to steer a very careful course to avoid getting embroiled in the arguments between the children’s parents one of whom will be their own son or daughter. Very often, they are seen as an extension of their son or daughter. If contact is stopped with that parent for whatever reason, by extension it often impacts on the contact the grandparents have too. However, research indicates that grandparents can play a huge and important part in their grandchildren’s lives. Often the grandparents support the two working parents by being on hand to provide before and after school care, and regularly have their grandchildren for longer stays thus allowing the children’s parents some crucial ‘time out’ from the stresses of day to day parenting. The positive impact on children who enjoy regular contact with their wider family members has been widely reported and therefore if this relationship breaks down for the child at the same time as the parental split, it can be devastating for the child.” What do you do if your son or daughter is denied access to their own child and this means you are denied

The positive impact on children who enjoy regular contact with their wider family members has been widely reported contact with your grandchildren? Can you as a loving, supportive grandparent secure contact by court order? What if you have a fall out with your own son or daughter and that means that you are denied contact? The answer to these questions is yes – grandparents can apply to Court although they have additional hurdles to overcome and are well advised to seek legal advice first. Glynis Wright & Co are advocates for grandparents’ rights and have regularly represented grandparents in court who have been denied contact with their grandchildren. “We recently won a case where the grandparents had been denied access for three years. However, we were able to argue that the relationship between the child and their grandparents had been meaningful and positive prior to the parental split and that the grandchildren would benefit from the reinstatement of their relationship with their grandparents. We succeeded in securing a contact order and we are delighted that those grandchildren are now seeing their grandparents on a regular basis once again.”

Only people with parental responsibility such as parents or stepparents can make an application for a Contact Order. Grandparents must first apply to the Court for permission (leave) to apply for a Contact Order. At the first hearing, the court considers the nature of the relationship the child or children had with the grandparents (such as frequency of contact and emotional ties). The court will also consider how much contact is being asked for and whether that impacts on the contact arrangements between the children’s parents. The Court also have to consider whether the application might be potentially harmful to the child’s well-being in any way. If the grandparents are granted leave by the Court, they are then entitled to apply for a contact order to protect their time with the grandchildren. If one or both parents raise objections there will be a full hearing in which all parties put forward their views. It is essential that any grandparent in this position receives good legal advice at all stages to ensure that they have a strong case before they file their court application. Furthermore, any good Family Solicitor will encourage the use of mediation prior to proceedings being filed with the Court which sometimes leads to a resolution of the problems that have arisen without any proceedings being necessary at all. Glynis encourages grandparents not to give up, to consider their options and to realise there is more hope than they may have once presumed. “We encounter many grandparents who simply were not aware that they had options, they did not know they could apply to the court for permission and then for contact orders. There is a growing body of opinion regarding the importance of grandparents in grandchildren’s lives and therefore there has never been a better time to take the step of finding out if you can reinstate contact with your grandchildren than now. We encourage grandparents to seek our advice and support – and most importantly, do not give up!” 0116 238 5680 Glyniswright.co.uk NICHE | 27

Asit’s tips for success Setting up a new Business 1

Think about the structure of your business Businesses can be structured in many different ways. Some of these structures offer tax advantages and cost savings, which is why many start-ups begin life as sole trader businesses. However, this brings with it personal liability – a liability which is limited for owners of limited companies, although they can face higher administration costs. Find yourself a good accountant from day one who can help with this.

2

Know your customer When you provide goods and services to a customer, you invoice them for your work and may give them credit on the invoice. This is like loaning them money – think about whether you need a deposit or money up front.

3

Think about the contracts that you make When you buy or sell goods, or order or receive services, your supplier or customer may want to try and impose their terms upon you. You need to understand what those terms are and check, if reference is made to terms and conditions, what those T&Cs say. You might need to trade under your own T&Cs.

4

Cash flow is king You need to think carefully about the payment terms you offer, and, if those terms are exceeded, how you go about collecting your money while maintaining your relationship with that customer. You need a credit control process which allows you to systematically record the sending out of your invoices and the subsequent follow-ups/reminders for payment.

Asit Jansari Director at Hollingsworths Solicitors

5

Keep records Whether it’s for the work that you do or the things that you buy for your business, keep good records from day one. You’ll be glad you did if a dispute arises or HMRC asks to see your records. Store them securely.

6

The data you hold If you are storing personal data, register with the ICO. It usually costs only £35 a year. Make sure you have policies in place and keep your data protected and safe. 0116 204 7260 aj@hlegal.co.uk hlegal.co.uk

As the recently appointed president of The Leicestershire Law Society, Glynis Wright has had an eventful term so far and with an events diary filling up quickly, Niche caught up with her to find out more

A

As the ninth female president of The Leicestershire Law Society, Glynis Wright was proud to host her inaugural event this summer with a garden party held at Trinity House. The event was a huge success attracting over 100 guests which included an array of Leicester’s business community, court judges, dignitaries and lawyers. “It was wonderful to see so many at my first event as President of The Leicestershire Law Society,” Glynis told us. There are a number of exciting events coming up hosted by Glynis with the next one being held on 22 October 2019 at the Mattioli Woods sky lounge. This event is a collaboration with the ICAEW, the ACCA and CIOT and aims to bring together accountants, tax advisors and lawyers and local businesses for an evening of networking and entertainment from local talented artists. Glynis’ first gala dinner ‘100 Years of Women in Law’ will be held on the 1st November 2019

in association with the Midlands Asian Lawyers Association (MALA). The event celebrates the Sex Disqualification (Removal) 1919 Act which removed the barrier to women becoming lawyers. This glittering event will showcase the achievements of women in law and is set to be one of the most prestigious in the Midlands. “I see this as a golden opportunity for the legal and business community of Leicestershire to come together to celebrate the role that female lawyers from a culturally diverse background are making to our profession today.” February 28, 2020 is the date set for another very exciting event in the LLS calendar, as Glynis announces a glamourous gathering to celebrate the triumphs of Leicester from the world of law, science, the arts, and even Space. With the full details held close to her chest, Glynis can reveal however that it will be a very special event indeed. “It is easy to overlook

just how much talent has come out of Leicestershire and how many outstanding individuals Leicestershire has produced. This evening will be the perfect opportunity to showcase the impact that individuals from our region have made on an international scale.” Perhaps the most important date in the LLS social calendar is the Annual Dinner and Legal Awards ceremony taking place on the 17 April 2020. The event will see key figures within the Leicester legal community gather to celebrate the excellence we have in the region. Glynis comments: “Having been a contestant and a winner in the local law awards, my team and I understand the enormous benefits of winning such a prestigious award. It will be an honour to organise the 2020 event to showcase our local talent.” Glynis Wright leicestershirelawsociety.org.uk NICHE | 29

MAKING A JOB MOVE When people move on from one job to the next, the terms of the employee’s existing employment contract are overlooked. So before taking up a new job, what does an employee need to think about? Firstly, the contract will require some form of notice to be given, and that might be in a particular form – usually, a written notice. Even if there is no employment contract, the employee is likely to need to give at least a week’s notice. Until that notice comes to an end, the duties of the employee to the employer continue. Secondly, are there any covenants that might stop or restrict the employee in that new role? For example, is there a clause that stops the employee joining a competitor or contacting customers? If there is, the employee will want to get advice on its enforceability. The employment contract may require the employee to provide their new employer with a copy – and that’s probably a good idea anyway so that the new employer knows what the parameters of their new employee can be. Thirdly, before leaving their position, ensure that all property of their old employer has been returned. An employee can’t keep any property, including documents such as customer lists. This type of material is likely to be confidential information and may attract additional obligations within the employment contract. Remember, even without an employment contract, the duty of fidelity continues until the employee leaves, and obligations in respect of trade secrets still apply after leaving.

As health inevitably declines during the later stages of life, it is important to look at long-term care options. And with life expectancy on the rise and more and more of us enjoying life for longer, our requirement for nursing homes grow. With around 410,000 residents in care homes, according to Competition and Markets Authory’s market study in 2017, the care home sector is hugely important; whilst the figures and prices may seem daunting, there are a range of options available to consider, as well as advice and support. If your capital and income is below £23,250 then you may be able to obtain assistance from the local council – though you may need to contribute towards the fees. If your capital and income is above this amount, then you are accountable for the full amount of the fees. Planning for these fees is about looking at how your assets are structured; whilst most of us want

BHAVIN GANDHI Director at Paradigm Wills and Legal Services our children to inherit our house after we pass, the reality is that unless you protect your home, it will go towards your care home fees. You cannot explicitly gift your house to your children to avoid nursing home fees, though there are legitimate reasons as to why you are gifting your house to someone else. It is possible to put your house into a trust and assign your property to someone else. For more information and advice about care home fees, contact Paradigm Wills and Legal Services.

PARENTING IN A SPLIT GLYNIS WRIGHT Head of Glynis Wright & Co For any family going through a separation or divorce the parents’ primary concern is the children. The thought of changing their world so dramatically is one of the most emotional aspects of divorce for any parent. There are ways to navigate the unsettled waters though and how you manage the separation. Keep negativity at bay Although a difficult thing to do, particularly in an acrimonious split, try to hide negativity and blame feelings towards your ex away from your children. Avoidance of this will minimise any guilt or anger children may inherit from you. Keep routines up Children feel more secure with a routine and keeping their current routine the same wherever possible will go a long way. Also,

showering them with gifts and letting them get away with things they never would have before can confuse them so try to keep your parenting style consistent with your pre-split ways. Keep an open door It should be clear to them that they’re allowed to talk about their feelings. Validate any feelings by telling them you understand and feel the same way where appropriate, so they know they’re not alone. Keep in mind that a split doesn’t need to mean only negative things for your children. If you keep the lines of communication positive and open and keep the children well informed, your children can come out of the split welladjusted and emotionally strong and enjoying a positive relationship with both parents.

BUSINESS FOCUS

Product Innovation Many businesses will be innovative with their product as a natural process, after all the very concept of innovation for a business is to turn their ideas into a reality. The requirement for making life easier has compelled people to seek refuge in products using cutting-edge advanced technology and design concepts. How do you ensure your products are always innovative?

THERE IS A TRIAL AND ERROR ELEMENT TO KEEPING YOUR PRODUCT INNOVATIVE OF COURSE – IT WON’T ALWAYS HIT THE SPOT, BUT IT’S IMPORTANT TO KEEP MOVING REGARDLESS

BYRON DIXON OBE CEO of Micro-Fresh

M

Micro-Fresh was born in 2006 from humble beginnings in a back bedroom. Soon it was three people strong and moved to its first offices in 2015. We went global in 2009 with China followed swiftly by India. Today, Micro-Fresh is a multi-national company with offices across nine countries and products sold in more than 44 countries (and counting!). Our product has always been innovative, an idea, a concept, which grew from a brainwave. With a product like ours you must have a customer-centric mindset; you have to keep evolving in order to keep customers coming back for more. Developing your product to continue to improve your customers’ lives; it’s vital that you continue to develop your product to stay ahead of competition and trends. There is a trial and error element to keeping your product innovative of course – it won’t always hit the spot, but it’s important to keep moving regardless; if you don’t keep pushing you will be out! Nokia is a prime example of what can happen if you don’t – Apple pushed them out very quickly as they cottoned on to the fact the customer wanted more from their device. Uber are an example of the opposite, 32 | NICHE

of getting it right by creating a whole new system for something that has been in practice for years, turning the whole industry on its head. Innovation is also about making good of tough situations. If you do what you did, you get what you got. It’s all about planning for tomorrow and with our product we have improved our consumer’s lives – shoes no longer need to smell, things can be washed at lower temperatures and bacteria is removed. All of these things solve problems for our consumers. It’s also about evolving outside of comfort zones, assessing the risks and being bold with decisions. We did this with our move outside of Europe and haven’t looked back. Moving forward for us means looking outside of the market we are in, branching into new ones. Micro-Fresh have evolved to placing our technologies in construction products to prevent mould on walls, a prime example of branching out and taking a risk. Being innovative isn’t all about product however, being innovative with how you work as a company is just as important. As a team and as leaders you have to think innovatively

To say there were hurdles would be an understatement but the one driving force was our refusal to compromise on our vision. We knew what we wanted and we were told repeatedly that it couldn’t be done but there was never any question of a tradeoff of one aspect for another. It took us two years and numerous weekly tastings to perfect them and achieve a bread that when microwaved did not become chewy, rubbery or hard. In perfecting this, we were first to market with this and are still market leaders with a product that now underpins the range. You would think that it was at the point that we could

As described in the question, a product or service a business offers needs to make life easier for the customer. My company, Latorio, sells tailored t-shirts, hoodies and jumpers online. Initially, we wanted our customers to measure themselves with a free tape measure that we gave them. We thought we were being innovative here because we offer our customers an extremely accurate way to get their perfect fit. However, we were not reducing a burden for them. We made this mistake because we didn’t listen to what our

sit back and relax but we were already thinking about the next mission. It was then that the burrito was born and, along with it, came a new set of challenges in the quest for the perfect food-to-go tortilla roll. We wanted to emulate an authentic burrito for convenience but microwaving tortilla didn’t lend itself well to that idea. So we were back to the drawing board on how we could have a microwaveable ‘baked’ product. Through sheer dogged determination and many trials, we are pleased to say we are first to market again with a microwavable burrito that doesn’t become soggy and holds just like a freshly toasted one. A testament to our success is the fact that these products are now available nationally and are in over 4,500 stores and growing fast.

customers wanted, we just assumed. It was fair to say that this free tape measure idea was a major flop. Nevertheless, when we started looking at what people thought about our product, we knew something needed to change with the buying process. Customers will rarely tell you what needs to change about your product. We found that the customers just didn’t want to make the effort and wanted to get on with their day. When our website only had the measurement option, everybody was saying, “this is a useful idea” but when they came to buy, they didn’t do it. We noticed that they would leave the website when it came to measuring themselves, even if they had a tape measure available. On top of that, when it came to friends who said

they would buy, they rarely did. I would ask them for their measurements, but they would then “forget”. They were just being nice. They didn’t forget, they just didn’t want to go through the hassle of measuring! Something needed to change. By looking at the customer’s behaviour, we realised we needed a more convenient method to get their measurements without compromising on accuracy. As a result, we developed an algorithm with 6300 data points which just needs your height, age, shoe size, weight and waist size. We know it is accurate because of the hours and hours of research that has been put in. Moreover, it is convenient because most people know the information we ask for. NICHE | 33

Creative62 sat down with Niche journalist Lauren to discuss creativity within branding, establishing brand identity and how to really stand out from the crowd

“A lot of businesses just want to get started – get on with running their businesses when they set up. They create a quick logo, print some business cards and off they go. What they don’t realise at this point however, is just how essential brand is to their company, it goes far beyond a logo,” says Creative62’s Managing Director Mark Robinson. It is a common misconception that branding is solely for bigger corporations when, in fact, every business has a brand and brand identity. Your business’s brand identity is its corporate image – the visible elements of your company and visions. Your identity isn’t just what services you provide or the content put on social media, but staff values and behaviour, and the events you attend. It is ultimately a reflection of you and your goals. Creative Director, Andy Rudkin tells Niche that branding is essential for every business: “Branding sets the benchmark for companies and shows how good you are; there are many dangers in making a quick and easy logo that hasn’t had much thought put into it – this will reflect on your business. “A great deal of thought must be dedicated to your logo; at the same time, however, you do have to remember that a logo – similarly to branding itself – isn’t static and can change as you develop.” After being in business for a while, some businesses feel that they have either outgrown their logo and brand or feel it doesn’t properly reflect their values anymore. Logos and brand identity change all the time as business owners and their teams evolve and their visions and messages change. Studio Manager Alex Metcalfe agrees and points out that people can often ‘neglect’ their brand when they should be reviewing it all the time: “It is a huge reflection of yourself and your company; you need to stay in touch with your brand and reflect on it. With industries constantly changing and other competitors emerging, you need to have a degree of flexibility and look at the bigger picture to stay ahead of your competition. “In everything you do, you should always be a few steps ahead. In what we do here at Creative62, we have to look at the bigger picture, think bigger than the client, and be many steps ahead.” When a client begins their journey with Creative62, it

doesn’t necessarily start with a complete re-brand: “Whilst we recommend that businesses look at their branding and constantly assess it in case of a rebrand, we don’t always take the steps towards a re-brand straight away. When a client with an existing business wants to look at this branding with us, we sometimes get the original logo and brand to work a little harder before we look at the other options for a re-brand,” Mark says. “We love to work with business owners who are wholeheartedly dedicated to their business and want to begin a journey of creativity.” Within parameters, the team teases out new creative and innovative concepts and roll out different stages of a client’s creative journey within phases. “The content of our phases depends on our clients and their individual needs. We give them a fresh perspective, and a different, creative point of view that will keep their branding on their toes,” Alex says. “With each client, we carefully deliberate on every aspect of a logo; our designs tell a story, layered within subtly complex logos – there’s nothing we haven’t thought of for the logo at that stage. We even identify if the logo will work and look good on multiple things, including letterheads, pens and balloons!” Instead of presenting the client with an overwhelming number of design ideas, the team opts for only three: the first idea is what the client thinks they want, the second is the team’s interpretation of the brief, and the final one is what they think will work best. Most of the time, clients choose the final design, which is an amazing insight into the talent within Creative62. Andy adds: “We recommend that clients deliberate on the choice for at least 48 hours, even if they think they’ve already chosen. The decision shouldn’t be given lightly, so there’s a lot of pressure behind it. They need to forget about making the decision and just see the designs; this is why I suggest that they take these three ideas and place them around the house – one at the top of the stairs, one in the kitchen and one in the living room. You will always end up subconsciously drawn to, or at least thinking about one.” 0116 275 2831

BRAND INNOVATION: CHRIS GOODMAN Managing Director at Soar Valley Press

EFFECTIVE OUTDOOR SIGNAGE Signage is the perfect tool for building a visual brand! Here are our top six signage tips to draw attention and attract new customers. 1 Less Is More Passers-by only have seconds to interpret a sign! Make the message clear and concise. Use the five-second rule: If you can determine the message in less than five seconds it’s a winner; if it takes longer, shorten your message. 2 Design with Readable Typefaces Using fancy or multiple typefaces can detract from the message and clutter the design. The human eye reads block letters and proper capitalisation much more easily. Opt for clear, straight typefaces that are easy to read and use slightly larger or bold text for emphasis. 3 Use Colours That Work Colour distinguishes the sign from the environment. The contrast between the foreground and background is one of the most important factors. Choosing bright and vibrant colours that are on trend but complement each other will draw more attention. 4 A Good Call To Action Once you have someone’s attention you need to motivate the customer to act; this is the ‘call to action’. An effective sign needs to have a simple goal with catchy instructions. 5 Size Matters! To reach as many passers-by as possible aim to make your sign as big as you can. We can print rigid boards up to 2400mm x 1200mm and eyeletted banners up to 3m wide by any length. 6 Find The Perfect Location Location must always be considered when planning and placing signage! How long will the reader have to take in your info? How far away will they be from the sign?

STAY ONE STEP AHEAD OF YOUR COMPETITORS In the last issue of Niche Magazine, we focused on joining the dots in your business marketing with the ‘Brand Glue’ approach. This month, we go a step further with a closer look at brand innovation. What is it? How do you do it? And, most importantly, will it break the bank? In an increasingly competitive market, brands need to stay relevant for the consumer. Without innovation, you get copied. You lose. Take a serious look at what sets you apart from your competitors. Now, consumers look not just for a product – but for an experience. Are you using new media to its fullest potential? How does your online presence translate to the physical environment? Take inspiration from projects like Samsung 837, a ‘Digital Playground’

And think about the rise of ‘smart home’ technology like Hive and Echo, which we willingly allow into our homes, because quite simply, they make life easier. The best brand innovation changes the way we live our lives, whilst reinventing it’s respective industries. On a smaller scale, innovation is a way to enrich your customer experience and bring your business to life. Is it time for some creative marketing and innovation for your brand? INNOVATION AND PUBLIC RELATIONS NIMISHA SHARMA Integration Manager (PR) at IvyJack At IvyJack, the core of our PR planning lies within thinking differently and moving away from traditional methods. We don’t just look at the average value of an article but how the right content can be disseminated through all channels, influencing brand perceptions and increasing levels of engagement for our clients. The role of Public Relations (PR) has changed significantly over the past few years. The most striking changes involve how content is now maximised to achieve better results. New methods are being embraced to amplify messages to different audiences and innovations in digital and social media have been pivotal in this shift. The rules have also changed. It’s no longer about the creation of press releases, but more

importance is placed on having a holistic approach to PR. Today, this makes a world of difference for brands. Recent trends have seen a focus on online content, moving away from traditional print. This means brands need to tailor their content so that it reaches the right audiences and creates the required impact – information must be valuable and engaging, resonating with targeted audiences. Data is key – everything is measurable and measured. Changes in search engine optimisation, web traffic and social media mean that results are now quantifiable and can help achieve positive business outcomes. PR professionals are now working more closer than ever with marketing teams to ensure maximum content amplification. Let’s raise your profile and ensure people are talking about you when you’re not there.

How to be innovative in sales Rob Spence, Director of Paragon Sales Solutions, gives us some advice

O

Once upon a time, back in the good old days, a lone and weary salesman suddenly had a brainwave. Instead of setting up a stall and waiting for his customers to come to him, he decided to go and knock on doors and to sell door to door. This, at the time, was highly innovative. And, as the years have progressed, more innovative ways to sell have come into fruition, the use of the telephone, postal service, social media and the internet. To be innovative in sales is simple – be creative. Look for new ideas and new ways to get your product or service in front of your customer and entice them in ways no one has ever tried to before. That is exactly what we do at Paragon Sales Solutions. When we sell on behalf of our clients, we understand that not every business is the same, and no two customers are the same. By working closely alongside our clients and listening to their desires and needs, we are always creating and trialing new and exciting ways to sell through a whole multitude of

channels; both digital and physical. There is nothing more important in life than to be creative and to always seek out that solution to the problem, and in our eyes that is what innovation is all about. Next time you are feeling in a bit of a rut with your business, or your sales, think back to that first person who started knocking on doors to sell – what can you do to be different, and to stand out? 0116 332 2813

A holistic view on

marketing Integrated, full-service marketing communications agency IvyJack sat down and talked to Niche journalists Lauren Raybould and Emily Kirton about their holistic approach to marketing and the importance of long-term relationships

I

IvyJack moved into their exquisite new office just a few weeks ago, due to their rapid expansion. With a dedicated sofa area, beautifully dressed and ornamented, it’s a cosy evironment designed to put clients at ease. With over 47 years of combined experience, it made perfect sense for husband and wife duo, David and Elaine Formby, to combine the client and agency sides of marketing to launch IvyJack – a perfect blend of industry knowledge, experience, and integrated skills. Their team consists wholly of senior members who all excel in their field of expertise, with their skill sets complementing each other perfectly. Elaine, Director of IvyJack said: “The past year has been a whirlwind for the IvyJack team. From starting with a team of seven to expanding to a team of ten and a range of new client wins within the first 12 months of trading has been phenomenally exciting. “Our integration, PR, creative and digital teams are all highly experienced and talented; from

global branding and product launches to integrated digital systems and local and global media plans, created to bring maximum value for the brands.” Director David describes the holistic view they take within the business and how the journey starts with their clients: “We establish a solid relationship with our clients from day one, ensuring a strong bond by keeping in contact and meeting them regularly – some tend to pop into our office for a cup of tea and a chat; it’s great that they do. Our offices also have rooms in which our clients can work from; some of them live locally but work far away, so this is a great opportunity for clients, as it has increased efficiency and created a better working relationship with the agency. “Clients either directly contact us or come through to us as referrals. We like to get under the skin of every client and their business, understanding and adopting their visions and values, whilst becoming an extension of their team. “Building that trust and

relationship is crucial with our clients. Our passion is learning about our clients business – stripping it back, sometimes refining their processes and always delivering valuable marketing campaigns. Learning is a key principle – you can’t sit still, you need to adapt and evolve and be willing to learn new skills.” IvyJack also process and dissect their research findings before they begin to implement and convert them into marketing strategies: “We pull apart existing perceptions of the brand that we work for, analyse them, challenge them and build an integrated strategy that looks at the bigger picture and repositions our clients for long-term success,” David explains. Delivering targeted, integrated campaigns to increase customer loyalty, brand engagement, and sales, IvyJack definitely have their client’s best interests at heart – and go above and beyond in everything they do. 0116 218 2750 ivyjack.co.uk NICHE | 43

EDUCATION FOCUS

Innovation in employment education Employee development forces a company and its leaders to grow and look to the future whilst welcoming in new and innovative ideas. An inspired employee is more than twice as productive as a satisfied employee, and more than three times as productive as a dissatisfied employee. How much do you invest in the development of yourself and your team in the name of innovation?

LEADING THROUGH POWER AND FEAR WILL JUST PRODUCE DISSATISFIED EMPLOYEES THAT WILL NEVER GO THE EXTRA MILE, AND WHY SHOULD THEY?

JAY GROOCOCK Head of Education and Welfare at Coventry City Football Club

F

For me, investment in yourself is a must in life, not just in your chosen careers. Investment in yourself means different things to different people but that’s exactly it, true investment in yourself is what you as the individual would consider most important to you and your ambitions. This is very much what the leader should find out about the team they lead, what is important to them individually and collectively as a team? Leading through power and fear will just produce dissatisfied employees that will never go the extra mile, and why should they? They aren’t being valued. Possibly underpaid? Possibly overworked? More importantly, leading like this I believe has – and still does – vastly increase mental health issues within employees. As a leader, I believe you must aim to inspire your team to be innovators, to better themselves (in their own way) and to let them know that you are with them within this whole journey of development. I have always taken time to know the individuals within my teams, chat about their ambitions, let them know you are there if they are struggling both in and out of the role. This builds a rapport and respect between you that I believe inspires your team to go the extra mile within their roles, simply because you have gone the extra mile with them. Within my last role as Head of Football, I employed an ambitious Portuguese football coach called Miguel Ribeiro.

44 | NICHE

At the time of employment, Miguel had recently come over to this country with his wife to build a new life in England. In Portugal, he had worked for Sporting Lisbon CF one of the largest football clubs within Portugal and Europe, but in England, he had struggled to find work and was just starting to learn the language and had been working at a pub. Long story short, I employed Miguel because he showed passion, desire and more importantly he came across as caring and a good person. Miguel and I worked side by side for two years, within these two years he achieved his UEFA Licence in Portugal and since my appointment as Head of Education and Welfare at Coventry City Football Club, has now taken over from me as lead of the programme, showing an incredible rise in his professional development. The reason I wanted to share this specific case study is me and Miguel are now the closest of friends, as with journeys like these come really tough times ‘on and off the pitch’ as we would say. It was during these tough times though that the rapport was built between a leader and his team and because of this, Miguel is an incredible innovator within his role and continually strives for self-development. I firmly believe that we will again link up within professional football some years down the line. If you are going to lead, then lead by being a good person and showing that you care. Only then will the individuals that you lead become innovators, and with regards to personal development, Miguel’s now teaching me Portuguese, I am nearing completion of my UEFA A Licence and have just enrolled onto a Masters in Sports Directorship, but I wake up every morning still thinking I need to be better because well, to quote philosopher Socrates: “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”

ELIZABETH HARDWICK-SMITH Director of HR and Training at Pick Everard

A

As a HR professional, I’m aware of the strong relationship between how well prepared an organisation is for learning and its ability to change and adapt, innovate and have transformational bottom-line performance. It is through the continual expansion of our capacity and capability that we become better prepared to shape and create our future. The best learning, therefore, requires commitment, is continuous and takes place in a climate where it can be used in practice. My team and I at Pick Everard are not only responsible for driving our own development, but also those of others. We have a huge influence on how we engage our people in learning opportunities and, in turn, the quality of their idea generation, creativity and behaviour change. We embrace learning in its broadest sense and encourage personal ownership for this, in line with individual preferences. Some of our people prefer group learning whilst others, individual reflection. We’re active on social

FRAN BOORMAN CEO and Co-Founder of Goal 17 Ltd

When you say the word innovation most people think tech, but whilst the world is distracted by disruptive automation, the silent killer of staff attrition poses a greater risk. The fight for humans in a robot world has already begun with the UK skills shortage hitting 870,000 people. My belief is that people are the most valuable asset in a business. I therefore always invested in creating the best possible culture, so that ‘talent’ chooses to stay engaged and retain in an organisation. As a result of this I was able to build one of the fastest growing businesses in its sector and engage over 1000

media, sharing and researching knowledge from fellow professionals. We gather ideas from professional publications and take interest from the case studies of others, particularly those in other industries. We look for ways to develop ideas further, to turn them in a new direction. We make positive use of learning through in-house structured learning and external courses and education. Our flexible e-learning platform, Pickademy enables the team and others to learn on the move on a range of soft skills subjects. Our lunch ‘n’ learn sessions make use of Ted Talks, group discussion, and knowledge share. Our graduates benefit from a structured early career programme. Professional chartership is also encouraged within our team and across the business for technical skill development. Coaching on the job and mentoring is another important skill investment we make. This happens in a variety of ways. Experienced colleagues will support less experienced colleagues but we also recognise that reverse mentoring has a place. We embrace this informally, with new team members providing new insights and perspectives to more established team members – either on the job or in meetings. It’s this constant sharing of information that often helps manage a flow of innovation across the team and wider business. Investing in development and applying to learn has its challenges but through this, we can identify continuous improvements and innovation. We understand how we can and should evolve our service, better partner with the business, approach difficult situations more confidently and implement new ideas for our people practices. With exciting plans for our future, we must keep making the level of investment we have been and ensure that what we’re doing is as strong as it can be to deliver maximum results.

dedicated team members nationwide. The ‘innovation’ I found most effective has actually been around since the earliest Greek civilisations; MENTORING. Through developing a robust mentoring culture, I was able to outperform the market and create long term sustainability. The real innovation came from how mentoring was implemented. In the first recorded mention of Mentoring (Homer’s Odyssey) ‘the mentor in the story is a somewhat ineffective old man’. Some things never change! The concept is incredibly powerful but even today most programmes fail or prove largely ineffective. Most mentoring programmes throw people together with no formal training – even with the best will in the world data shows that only those with exceptional social skills are proven to succeed. The mentoring training programmes that exist may build knowledge but don’t give the people enough experience to have confidence and apply their skills effectively. The innovative approach I developed to create a robust mentoring culture involved fusing both practical experience and theoretical training, alongside using the catalyst of giving back and sports

to break down barriers and accelerate learning. I have now systemised this approach and offer it out as an awardwinning training programme to other companies. Goal 17 delivers the most innovative mentoring programme to educate and develop staff. We teach world class theory in online modules, created with leading universities. This is then brought to life when we pair each of our mentor trainees with a homeless young person undergoing a mirroring football themed academy. The hands-on experience not only cements learning but brings a sense of meaning, purpose and connection amongst employees. The result is staff who reach new levels of engagement with their employers. They return to the workplace with the skills to create a selfsustaining mentoring culture that spreads through an organisation. This is a culture that will survive leadership, technology and economic changes. When looking at developing innovation within your organisation it doesn’t have to be about reinventing the wheel; finding innovative new approaches to traditional methods and then adapting them to our fast-changing world, can be equally effective. Leicester City Council’s shopfront improvement scheme, which has seen shopfronts renovated and retail streets painted, won ‘Best Small Business Friendly Initiative’ at the recent Leicestershire and Rutland FSB Local Authority ‘Small Business Friendly Awards’. As part of the scheme, shops on Leicester’s Saffron Lane have had their shutters covered with printed vinyls featuring photographs that reflect the history of the Saffron Lane area. These include views of the Saffron Lane estate under construction, an image of the number 24 bus that used to run in the area, and a picture of a steam train at the old Saffron Lane crossing. And in Welford Road, shops have been repainted in pastel colours, echoing an earlier successful similar scheme in Belgrave Road, where shops were painted in bright colours.

Judges were impressed by the scheme’s success in improving the appearance of local areas for businesses and the whole community. Jenny Cross, Area Leader and Leicester-based business owner, said: “The Judges were impressed with the creativity, innovation and quality of this project, and by how the benefits will be felt by other businesses and people in the local community. In challenging times for high streets, this project makes a direct and unmissable impact and manages to highlight our local heritage at the same time too. City mayor Peter Soulsby said: “Shopfront improvement grants have long been one of the ways in which we support local small businesses. The shutter vinyls are a new idea and have proved very popular. “By investing in our

neighbourhoods in this way, we can help to boost the confidence of local communities, smarten up streets and demonstrate our commitment to local enterprise. I’d like to thank the FSB for recognising our work with this award.” The scheme is a three-year regeneration programme that aims to support the growth of local businesses and improve the environment in retail areas. Funding comes from the city council’s retail area improvement scheme. Other areas in Leicester that have benefitted from the programme include Heyford Road, Wharf Street North, King Richard’s Road, Aylestone village, St Stephen’s Road, the Barley Croft centre, Church Gate and the area around Leicester market. leicester.gov.uk/shopfrontgrant NICHE | 49

Innovation in property Staying innovative in the property industry requires firms to embrace the latest methods of construction. With sustainability continuously topping the trend list, as well as adopting new approaches in architectural design and eco advances, staying innovative in this industry is not easy. How do you stay ahead in such a fast-paced environment? BRAND NEW CLOUD-BASED SOFTWARE NOW ORGANISES YOUR PROPERTIES, CHECK-INS, INVENTORIES, CONTRACTS, TENANTS, PAYMENTS AND LOTS MORE

JANE TAYLOR Director at No Ordinary Rental Ltd

Innovations in technology have made investing in property easier than ever, from sourcing and viewing properties to managing a rental portfolio. Brand new cloud-based software now organises your properties, check-ins, inventories, contracts, tenants, payments and lots more – keeping you on track, allowing you to concentrate on improving the efficiency of the business. What we do at No Ordinary Rental is as the business name states; we design interiors that aren’t the norm and we offer a personal service to our clients with full management from start to end. It’s too easy to follow the rest and do whitewash or magnolia emulsion walls, landlord furniture packs and clinical rooms. I always imagine myself as the tenant, viewing over 15 properties looking for that place you want to call your own, they all blend into one another, until…a house with a difference appears! That’s the home we want to create. Our ethos from day one was to always use sustainable materials, for example, one of our trademark decors is our decoupage wall art featured in our student properties. We use creative magazines to decoupage a wall to create a wow factor at no cost – well apart from the bag of wallpaper paste that is!. We take walls back to brick, fireplaces back to original fireplaces and rip up carpets to uncover original pine floorboards and antique tiles. Following on with our sustainable decor, we source old 50 | NICHE

scaffold boards and scaffold rails for shelving and hanging space. So many rental companies and landlords are stuck with the status quo in our industry, especially as there are so many hands-off investors out there as well as hands-off landlords out there. What really makes a difference is being a great communicator and acting on your tenants’ requests. 1. If you are just another whitewashed property with no thought or bespoke furnishings, you will be lost in the competition, think why would someone want your property, over 200 others which are the same? 2. If you are too ‘on trend’ with your interior, trends come and go like lightning, it will soon be out of date and you will be finding yourself back at the property giving it a new makeover yet again, time after time. What we do works and that’s creating your formula without compromising on quality. If your property strategy is rental properties or serviced accommodation with inclusive bills, then make your property energy-efficient starting with modern insulation, installing smart heating systems, smart locks for doors, to the easiest finishes such as low energy LED light bulbs. Technology is making property investment and property managing a whole lot easier. Photography is a critical part of the property process, invest in a good photographer, or educate yourself on property photography. Photos sell properties. Something you must always remember is dressing and accessorise the rooms before photos which gives that homely image rather than cold empty rooms. Social media is still an untapped resource when it comes to the property industry. It can be used to extend your market reach by promoting your professional photographs, sharing your ideas, knowledge and most importantly selling your properties/rooms!

The construction industry is having to reinvigorate itself due to national and international legislation which stems from the Paris Climate Agreement. This agreement ensures that the world wakes up to the damage greenhouses gases are causing and ensures that each country signed up limits the emissions they are generating. The industry has been oblivious to the fact that 38 per cent of global energy related emissions originate from building and construction, with a proportion stemming from the use of concrete and the archaic use of gas to heat our homes. This shake up is well and truly overdue and it’s now down to the large PLC housebuilders to take some inspiration from the unique one-off builds we are used to seeing on Grand Designs. The UK’s Green Building Council has a vision for sustainability in the built environment to mitigate the damage being caused.

The key changes that will assist are: Heating Switching from fossil fuels such as gas and oil to newer techniques, such as ground and air source heat pumps, are becoming more commonly accepted. With greater use, the associated costs with installation will fall, providing us with relatively cheap heating that is sustainable. Other techniques to assist with keeping the heat in once generated includes cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. There was a big drive by the Government from 2007-2014 to improve on the above with generous subsidies provided towards insulations with the Mark Group featuring heavily in providing these services to the general public.

THE INDUSTRY HAS BEEN OBLIVIOUS TO THE FACT THAT 38 PER CENT OF GLOBAL ENERGY RELATED EMISSIONS ORIGINATE FROM BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION

Electricity The UK on average consumes 67 per cent of total electricity generated in its buildings and with a large drive towards supplying that electricity through renewable energy sources such as wind farms, nuclear power and hydropower we’re offering clean power to the country. A newly developed PV roof tile by the renowned green company Tesla offers the construction industry a practical and attractive alternative to the traditional roofing techniques. If, and it’s a big if, these were to become industry standard, we would have a brighter future towards clean electricity in the home.

WE DON’T ALWAYS NEED SWEEPING CHANGES TO STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME, SOMETIMES A LITTLE TWEAK ON AN EXISTING IDEA CAN BE THE THING THAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE CROWD

JOHN GHENT Director at The Property Fox

A

As we move forward, I am sure that the Government and Local Councils are going to be much more mindful with what they are granting planning permissions for. For me, embracing the latest eco technologies and incorporating them into new homes would be a massive win in the longterm, albeit it may cost more and reduce profits somewhat in the short-term. Carving out your own niche is vital in business and the construction industry is no different. Being the ‘go-to’ team or company when it comes to sustainable and eco-friendly housing would be a

massive feather in the cap and I am sure it would enhance a company’s reputation once word got out. Whilst we remain hellbent on building executive homes on plots of land, there is a massive market going relatively untouched by all apart from the small house builders developing small sites – the starter homes. Imagine being the very first in your area with a genuinely revolutionary plan to build affordable starter homes on their own estate, whilst also embracing all the latest eco-friendly technologies and state-of-the-art design from a like-minded architect. Estates like this could change the landscape forever.

Technology will continue to advance, as will construction methods, and they will race along quicker than most companies can keep up with, so staying ahead is like trying to catch your own shadow! But, by using the tech that is there right now, and coupling it with new ideas, now that’s a winner. We don’t always need sweeping changes to stay ahead of the game, sometimes a little tweak on an existing idea can be the thing that sets you apart from the crowd, and using that tweak to get you into the niche market of your choosing is a sure fire way to success when coupled with the right marketing strategy. Nijjar and Jaz Kaur talk about providing an innovative, world-class service for landlords

A

After many years of consulting within the property industry Narinder Singh Nijjar and Jaz Kaur decided to take a leap of faith and set up their own specialist letting agency. Jaz was the former Associate Director at Kings Real Estate, and was an essential part of that estate agency’s growth and success. It was this that convinced her that the next logical step was to set up a specialist lettings business that provided their clients with a tailored one-stop service – whatever their portfolio size. She said: “For us, it’s been really beneficial to set up our own business; already we have a huge client base that is expanding rapidly – and we even have current clients who

own properties in Leicester approaching us about taking on their properties outside the city. “We get many referrals and recommendations which is a massive vote of confidence in our business model and ethos.” Earlier this year, Narinder appeared as a judge on the BBC Show The Best House in Town, a TV show that had judges look around unique houses in different regions in order to find the best home. He said: “My years of experience in the property market certainly held me in good stead during the judging process and I couldn’t help but carry out a quick valuation of each property as habit.” The Lettings Business really is a one-stop shop for landlords; they provide a clear

and transparent property management service without all the red tape and jargon. They pride themselves on the personal one-to-one service that they provide their clients, which enables them to understand their clients’ needs and make the lettings experience as simple as possible. Jaz and Narinder bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the lettings industry and they both have a passion to deliver and maximise return on investment for all their landlords. Innovation is about taking something that already exists and making it better – this is exactly the thinking behind Leicester’s new £43 million apartment block, The Wullcomb

a new way to live in the city

54 | NICHE

T

The Wullcomb, which neighbours Highcross on Vaughan Way, is set to open its doors later this summer and will create 297 residential homes. Renting an apartment in the centre of a city is nothing new, but how often is there a sense of community among those living in apartments that encourages them to step outside their front door and socialise with neighbours? This is what The Wullcomb is striving to change by embracing an innovative new age of renting a home. A professional grade kitchen to inspire community cooking, a rooftop terrace for outdoor socialising and an entertainment hub called The Bower, will all be open for residents’ use and private hire. The Perch is a living space where residents can kick back, day or night, while the work from home stations allows for creative, collaborative thinking any time of day. This approach to living is the making of real estate investment manager Long Harbour and its in-house management company Way of Life who have had a vision for innovation since the development was revealed back in 2017. Way of Life Managing Director Sowgol Zarinchang said: “From research we carried out prior to the development, we knew Leicester needed a solution to its current residential accommodation. We found that the city had seen very little built in recent times and that the quality of rental properties were mixed, with unit sizes generally smaller than elsewhere in the country and little to no amenity space available. The Wullcomb fills these gaps and more.” And it’s not just the concept that has

NICHE FEATURE

seen creators take innovative stride. The technology, features and services used throughout the apartment block are a step ahead too.

Environment

Residential developments are required to be much more aware of the environmental footprint they are making and The Wullcomb has made extensive considerations throughout its designs. Energy efficient lighting systems and bulbs have been installed throughout the building and electricity costs will be reduced by the solar panels on the roof. The team at The Wullcomb have also been keen to accommodate cycling enthusiasts and users of electric cars by introducing 297 cycle storage and workshop and pay as you go charging points in the car park.

Security

Residents’ safety and security is a major priority and has not been scrimped on with a top of the range CCTV system implemented. The system uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect irregular behaviours on site and instantly notifies relevant management teams so action can be taken accordingly. Additionally, the system will be used in the amenity spaces so management can identify how the areas are being used. This will enable Way of Life to monitor the popularity of each area and make improvements where necessary. Thumb print check-in has also been introduced for quick access to all of the building’s communal areas.

The Bower is the space that builds a sense of community the most. A break-out room that can be used for business meetings or social events Entertainment

Way of Life and Long Harbour knew they wanted to create a place that doesn’t feel like a typical block of flats – it needed to feel like a home. This is not only reflected in the flats’ décor, furniture offering, amenity spaces and outdoor areas but the atmosphere too. An innovative music and video system has been integrated for the entire building and can be centrally controlled by building managers via a mobile app. They have teamed up with Playlister, who have specially curated music playlists that will play throughout The Wullcomb with tempos and moods changing as day turns into night. Residents can also take control of the music in communal spaces via a control panel on the wall, so whether they are having a cosy night in relaxing to some tunes or in party-mode there is an option that suits. The Bower is the space that builds a sense of community the most. A break-out room that can be used for business meetings or social events it features an 85” smart TV screen with surround sound for the ultimate cinema experience, comfortable living furniture, a meeting table come table tennis table and a small kitchenette where residents can get to know each other in a relaxed, fun environment.

Service

Way of Life is determined to deliver a high quality of service, to date only seen in the hospitality sector, and is adamant on moving away from being a standard landlord. Their management service goes far beyond the usual, taking the burden of everyday life admin off people’s hands so more time can be spent enjoying life in Leicester. To help with this ethos, they have introduced a team of customer relationship managers, a concierge, and cleaning and maintenance team all of whom will be on-hand to enhance customers’ living experience. Wi-Fi is free and running throughout the building and all apartments, even gamers will be kept happy with 150mbps up and down, provided as part of the rent from day one and with the opportunity to upgrade to 300mbps. A dedicated portal has been created for residents to manage everything from notifications of post in the post box to booking amenity spaces for private parties. The Wullcomb has just unveiled its show flats and will be available to rent from late summer 2019. thewullcomb.com thewullcomb@wayoflife.com NICHE | 55

Award winning Chartered Surveyors and Property Consultants, Wells McFarlane, manage a vast commercial property portfolio across the Midlands, East Anglia and further afield that includes retail parks, business parks and serviced offices, as well as retail and industrial units. Their dynamic and innovative approach within the region is contributing hugely to the demand for attractive, modern and appealing commercial property drawing in national business right here in the Midlands. The firm tells of the shift in demand for innovative builds: “Commercial premises on our books are being snapped up very quickly, with commercial office, industrial, and retail space all performing well this year. We are seeing a particular swing in demand for smaller serviced office space that gives flexibility for small businesses and a notable increase in entrepreneurs moving into the region and looking for flexibility to fix rates and expand their

office space as their business grows.” It’s not only the type of property where demand is growing but it is also the location, the firm comments. “We have seen a marked demand for small retail units in popular towns such as Market Harborough increase during 2019. Rents are growing as independent, boutique retailers look to innovate and appeal to modern consumers seeking attractive places to visit, experience and shop.” As an established, trusted and experienced team of multi-disciplined Chartered Surveyors, the commercial team represent a plethora of clients from funds, institutions, developers, landlords, high net-worth individuals, land and property portfolio owners. Their portfolio not only includes three of the largest commercial development schemes in Leicestershire, but their client base also reflects an exceptional quality of service and includes many longstanding and founding clients that have been nurtured and developed

over the last 15 years. Winner of the county’s coveted Estates Gazette Most Active Dealmaker 2019, Jason Hercock MRICS, Director at Wells McFarlane, said: “It is promising to witness this surge in demand for commercial property lettings – particularly small businesses and entrepreneurs investing and expanding locally within the East Midlands, despite the political uncertainty that Brexit presents. “We are constantly looking for new landlords and investors with commercial premises that we can add to our expanding portfolio, and in doing so, meet the demands of increased lettings applicants we receive on a daily basis. This surge in demand only further highlights Leicestershire as a profitable county to invest in.” 01455 559 030 wellsmcfarlane.co.uk NICHE | 57

In recent times, with all the concerns shared regarding Brexit, we are seeing changes within the property market and the effect it has on the buying of homes. Research from the lender One Family has concluded that more than 50 per cent of first-time buyers - who currently have a deposit - are holding off from purchasing a house, which is an indication of the current position of the UK property market. The research suggests that there are at least 136,000 aspiring homeowners that are holding off from buying property until they know what the future brings with Brexit. According to One Family’s research, two out of three first-time buyers believe that if they were to purchase property before Brexit, then it would be a bad financial decision on their part. With house prices dropping, many homeowners are withdrawing their property from the market; so,

NARINDER SINGH NIJJAR Director at The Lettings Business despite this being a great opportunity for first-time buyers with the lower prices, there is a decrease in available properties on the market. The uncertainty surrounding Brexit has seen this continuing trend lead to an unprecedented rental demand for high-quality rental properties, which has contributed to an increase in rental values - meaning landlords are achieving a higher rental yield on their investments. We can only comment on our own experiences in that increased rental yields is resulting in our landlords continuing to purchase more buy-to-let investment properties.

MARKETING YOUR PROPERTY HARRY SANDHU Branch Manager at Kings Real Estate When it comes to marketing your property, your estate agent should take pride in showcasing your house. Every aspect of marketing your house needs to be carefully considered and thought out, to ensure that you get the most out of selling your property, from the photography of the house, images used on the listing, to the description and floorplan. Your property must look as presentable as possible to attract many potential buyers, with 27 per cent of house hunters focusing on furnishings and decor and 24 per cent focusing on clutter and mess around the house. At Kings Real Estate, we take pride in doing everything in-house to

ensure that your property is marketed successfully – from writing those descriptions and photographing your house. Our team ensure that the rooms are decluttered – removing that tea towel from the oven handle, ensuring no plates are drying on the sink rack and that everything is neat and tidy. With the descriptions, we are attentive to the tone of voice, and make your property stand out from the crowd, whilst being consciously aware of amenities in the local region in which your house is in. TAUPE IS THE NEW BLACK As we know, the war on plastic is a very topical issue at the minute and the horticultural industry has its own issues and solutions. With this rise in plant-based eating we are seeing a huge upturn in people growing their own vegetables. The Science Behind the Black Pot The pots are made out of recycled waste plastic from car manufacturers and many larger nurseries collect the pots and send them back to the manufacturer for recycling. As black absorbs light, the pot causes issues for domestic recycling, as recycling facilities sort plastics by bouncing a beam of light off them, with them ending up in landfill. With gardeners buying half a billion-plastic plant pots and trays every year, it’s a huge problem. The Way Forward The recyclable taupe pot is an industry

JODIE FEDORKO Soft Landscaping Designer at Leicestershire Garden Design initiative being led by representatives from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and UK growers. Many nurseries and retailers have already committed to using taupe pots, which look good and protect plant roots from light. They are carbon free, recycled polypropylene which gives them the major advantage of being easily identifiable as recyclable by the machines that sift through domestic waste. Millions of pots once destined for landfill could now be recycled instead. This is a step in the right direction that will see many domestic, commercial and retail suppliers following suit.

DRIVING POND INNOVATIONS IMOGEN WOOD Office Administrator at Ponds by Michael Wheat Innovation to us is all about new ideas and technologies which make day to day life easier. We are living in an exciting age where a lot of mundane manual tasks are taken care of by intelligent machines. For us, this has meant we are able to change people’s perceptions and their ideas about the traditional garden pond. Gone are the days of murky, green stagnant water thanks to the advancement of modern technologies in the filtration equipment sector. We can construct visually stunning ponds with modern technologies to ensure the water is kept clean and clear. Filtration and pump systems can now be tailored

to each individual’s requirements. Innovation has meant we can now control filter systems and lighting from an application on a smart phone or tablet. We have hugely beneficial and time saving inventions, such as automatic self-cleaning filtration systems, meaning that after the initial pond construction has been completed, the client is left with a feature to enjoy year-round without any of the fuss of regular maintenance. With the help of pond technology, fallen leaves can now be easily collected by electric pond skimmers. This means the days of standing by the pond and manually fishing out floating debris are over. Environmental awareness for efficiency and sustainability are the values that continue to drive pond innovation, offering intelligent solutions.

The evolution of

sustainable flooring Nathan Ware, Managing Director of The Commercial Flooring Company tells Niche journalist Lauren about how the flooring industry is turning away from the carpet and leaning towards more sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives.

W

With the government pledging to make all homes carbon zero by 2020, many houses are now going green from the ground up, with owners more aware of the impact homes have on the environment. The average carpet’s lifespan is around 10 years, however, fashion trends dictate that many people will redo their flooring more frequently than this. And with over 500,000 tonnes of carpet being buried in landfill every year, it’s no wonder that people are 64 | NICHE

turning to green flooring instead. When it comes to eco-friendly flooring, the material must be sustainable, suitable for recycling at the end of its lifespan and the fewer chemicals used in the manufacturing process, the better. There are many different types of eco-friendly materials, from bamboo and cork to fishing nets, reclaimed hardwood and glass tiles! With these alternatives to carpet come many benefits; cork flooring, for example, is not only

biodegradable and recyclable – it is also warm, soundproof and extremely soft underfoot, as well as being hardwearing! The Commercial Flooring Company are the leading company for residential and commercial flooring; established in 1982, they are the go-to company for innovative flooring and have several accreditations with a number of Safety in Procurement Scheme (SSIP) members including Constructionline, CHAS, Safecontractor, and SMAS

Mental Health first aid training

This year one in four people will have suffered from mental ill health. Scott Kempin tells Niche journalist Lauren about the importance of mental health

training in the workplace

C

Conditions in the workplace can significantly affect your mental health, which then affects your performance in your job. Recent studies state 12.7 per cent of all sickness absence days in the UK are due to mental health issues. Niche spoke to Scott Kempin of Mind Your Health find out just how crucial mental health is in the workplace. “It’s essential that businesses are aware of how mental ill health impacts the individual in the workplace. It’s such a huge issue, with 89 per cent of workers reporting a significant impact on their working life due to their mental health issues and 91 million workdays lost each year – it’s something business owners need to look into urgently.” However, one of the main problems Scott believes is an obstacle to there not being enough mental health awareness within business is the stigma around talking about mental health – with just 13 per cent of

68 | NICHE

employees feeling comfortable talking about mental illness at work. “They really are shocking figures; as a personal trainer, I was helping others become physically fit, and I noticed that mentally they were struggling and I wanted to help but didn’t know how. This was the reason why I decided to train in mental health first aid in order to set up Mind Your Health to help more people get the support they need.” Mind Your Health run mental health first aid training courses across the Midlands, mindfulness retreats and fitness boot camps for businesses. They help get your staff both physically and mentally fit through structured training both onsite and at their training facilities. Scott provides first aid for mental health training at levels one, two and three which carry qualifications awarded by FAA and regulated by OFQUAL. These courses are either half day, one day or two days and can be taught on or off site.

MIND YOUR HEALTH.

AS A PERSONAL TRAINER, I WAS HELPING OTHERS BECOME PHYSICALLY FIT, AND I NOTICED THAT MENTALLY THEY WERE STRUGGLING

With 67 per cent of senior leaders struggling with stress it is vitally important business owners, CEOs senior team and directors recognise what mental ill health is, for themselves and their employees. By investing in better mental health training/support, UK business could save up to eight billion pounds per year. For employers and businesses not afraid to invest in mental health training and health and wellness support for their people the ROI is massive – £4.20 on average (up to £9 in some cases) for every £1 spent. “It’s time mental health was approached in a positive, supportive way, tackling stigma and opening channels up for people to talk and get the support they so desperately need. By doing so, both the employer and employee will benefit long term”. mindyourhealth.fit

significantly affect Mental Health. Mental Health can just as equally impact job performance. Studies state 12.7 per cent of all sickness absence days in the UK are due to Mental Health issues. How do you assess Mental Health in the workplace?

Founder of FSD Academy

H

Having dealt with my own mental health and the challenges following the premature end to my professional football career, I feel well placed to talk about how life can really test us. Being told at the age of 26 that if I didn’t quit the job I loved I probably wouldn’t be able to walk by the time I was 40 sent me into a downward spiral. The impact of this led me to drink, I became a recluse and eventually I ended up in rehabilitation. But it’s these experiences that mean when I talk about Mental Health with the young men at my football academy, I can talk with conviction about coping mechanisms for dealing with mental health issues. I strongly believe every employer should support these principles in the workplace: The opportunity to talk When I feel any kind of low thoughts coming on, I talk about them straight away. I truly think everyone should be free to discuss their low thoughts in the workplace, without judgement.

ED WATLING Health and Wellbeing specialist at Mattioli Woods

G

German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer said, “Health isn’t everything, but without it, everything else is nothing”. In the modern workplace, we are starting to understand that this doesn’t just apply to physical health but it’s equally important in relation to mental wellbeing. An employee with a physical or mental health issue is inevitably going to spend time away from work either ill or attending appointments/ treatment. Even while in work they may be distracted by their condition or worrying about it. An employee with a health issue can’t just switch it off and forget about it at work. “Thriving at Work”, the Stevenson/Farmer Report October 2017 revealed at 15 per cent of the UK working population displayed

Make a routine I haven’t missed one day of exercise since my time at Sporting Chance, it’s simply part of my routine. A healthy routine can aid our mental health. It can help us to cope with change and to form healthy habits. Where possible these routines should be supported in the work-place as it reduces our stress levels and increases productivity.

symptoms of mental health issues. This is where its important to differentiate between diagnosed mental illness (clinical depression, bipolar, psychosis) and mental health issues (sleep problems, anxiety, stress, panic attacks etc). The true impact of mental health issues in the workplace has only been recently been measured. Stevenson/ Farmer estimated the cost to UK employers at up to £42billion per year; half of this figure is down to presenteeism – lost productivity due to underperformance while at work. The total cost of mental health issues to the UK economy could be as high as £99 billion. The stigma and taboos around mental health tend to mask both symptoms and the impact it can have. Its obvious that employers need to treat employee mental wellbeing

seriously. Employers should encourage their staff to discuss issues and concerns openly and without prejudice. With decades of silence around this subject support is needed, this can take several forms: ◆ Education; training in awareness, personal resilience and Mental Health First Aid will help the workforce be more understanding of colleagues who are struggling and signpost them to help. ◆ Technology; there are several apps that will allow employees to monitor their mental wellbeing and provide tips/notifications to help improve their mood/reduce stress thereby encouraging improved mental wellbeing. ◆ Direct intervention; Support such as Employee Assistance Programme services, access to counsellors and therapists (perhaps via Private Medical Insurance/Health Cash Plans etc) NICHE | 69

Trailblazers for hip replacement

Nuffield Health are the pioneers of minimally invasive hip replacement surgery. With groundbreaking rehabilitation programmes the innovations and advancements they use for this state-of-the-art procedure means that you can be in and out within days of having the surgery performed

T

The weeks of being bed bound after what was once a highly invasive and painful hip replacement are a thing of the past. The traditional hip replacement surgery had lengthy recovery programmes with patients often needing long-term sickness leave from work and prevented patients simply going about their everyday lives for weeks and even months. Thankfully, with the very latest in medical advancements, a Nuffield Health patient can be treated promptly with no waiting lists and be well on the way to full recovery in no time at all. So, what happens? Why would anyone need a hip replacement? Over time, the surfaces on the hip joint can start to wear. This can be caused by osteoarthritis or a previous injury to the hip.

Osteoarthritis is painful as joints become stiff and inflamed when the smooth lining between the joints gets damaged or wears away. Without the protection of this lining, the rough surfaces of your bones rub together as you move, causing the pain that is all too common to sufferers. Simple, everyday things like going for a walk or even getting dressed become difficult. There’s no cure for osteoarthritis and it can get worse with time. However, joints can be replaced successfully, improving mobility and reducing pain.

How is the procedure performed?

Recent advancements in prosthesis design and surgical techniques are changing the game in hip replacement

surgery, improving recovery times for patients. The new Superpath® procedure, available at Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital, means hip replacements can be completed with reduced trauma to the soft tissue around the hip – often without cutting any muscle at all. This means patients are back on their feet more quickly and with less discomfort and pain. Once your hip operation is over, you’ll be taken to the recovery room where you will wake from the anaesthetic and you will be made to feel nothing but cared for. What are the advantages of the innovative, minimally invasive technique in comparison to traditional hip replacement? ◆ Advancements in technology now mean less space is needed for the surgeon’s manoeuvres ◆ Minimally invasive hip replacements reduce trauma to the soft tissue around the hip, often without cutting any muscle at all ◆ Recovery can be faster than traditional surgery with patients able to walk assisted on the day of the operation. ◆ Less pain, less blood loss, faster recovery

WAYNE’S STORY Wayne Carlisle, a 52-year-old from Leicester, can’t praise the innovative procedure highly enough. A lifetime of playing sports and running marathons meant he needed a hip replacement, although he admits he was in denial for a long time. Wayne, an IT director, was told about the procedure at Nuffield Health’s Leicester Hospital and jumped at the chance to try it because he was keen to return to normal life as quickly as possible – although no one could have predicted just how quickly! He had his operation in September 2017, was discharged the next day and was mowing the lawn the day after that! Wayne said: “I ended up seeing three consultants! I just couldn’t believe that I needed a hip replacement. I was blaming the pain on anything and everything but arthritis, even a hernia operation that I needed. But then I had an MRI scan and was told that I really did need a hip operation. I didn’t even need to take painkillers, because the pain after the operation was nothing compared to the pain I had suffered before. I just can’t believe how good the procedure is, it is phenomenal. I’m now back to playing squash at the standard I was previously. It is just incredible.”

® Hip SuperPath SuperPath ® Hip Replacement. Replacement. It's possible to walk within hours of surgery Mr Ashwin Kulkarni FRCS, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon explains, "This new, minimally invasive technique is performed through a smaller incision and because we separate the muscles and tendons apart rather than cutting them and do not dislocate the hip, this means you'll recover a lot faster. So much so, you should be back on your feet within a few days following your surgery."

Do I need a hip replacement?

Most people with hip pain will often have groin pain which radiates to the knee. Some may also have pain outside the hip and others may experience pain in their buttock region. This pain is often brought on by activity. However, in advanced stages of arthritis, the pain will be continuous and will get worse with activity

What happens when you see me in clinic?

If you or your doctor suspects you may have arthritis or may need a hip replacement, I will talk with you to gain further information and undertake an examination. It may be necessary to send you for further diagnostic such as an X-ray, MRI scan or injection which will help me specify where the problem is and enable me to make a diagnosis.

If I have arthritis are there any alternative treatments available?

Yes, there are a number of alternative non-operative options for treatment, however, in most cases, these options will be already have been discussed by your GP. I would need to assess your requirements and discuss the correct procedure for you.

What happens during surgery?

After you receive the anaesthetic, a small incision will be made and the muscles will then be separated allowing access to the hip. A surgical dislocation is not required with SuperPath®, the socket and stem can then be replaced and fixed into place. This usually would take between 60 and 90 minutes.

As office workers we are a generation of sitters. Considered the new smoking in terms of the detrimental effects on health, a sitting lifestyle has a profound effect on our physical health. However, there are measures that employers and employees can take to help the reduce the negative effects. Employers are required to ensure that the workplace is well designed, and that staff know what they can do to reduce the risk of injury. Suitable training should be provided to DSE (display screen equipment) users as well as the provision of suitable workstations, software and eye tests as appropriate. If, after following all the advice for a self-DSE workstation assessment, the employee is still struggling with pain, the employer should consider an external DSE assessment. This involves a trained physiotherapist analysing the workstation and its setup with the individual’s injury/condition in mind and providing a comprehensive report with recommendations. This could include the provision of a new chair, a sit to stand desk and footrests. As a rule, hips and knees should

JULIE HAYTON Managing Director at Function Jigsaw be positioned at 90 degrees, with feet flat on the floor. Forearms should be parallel with the desk and supported by arm rests. The keyboard and mouse should be close to the user, allowing for a relaxed wrist position. Monitors should be in line with eye height and about arm’s length away from the user. Taking a break from sitting every 30 minutes, whether this be walking to the printer, making a drink or standing to make a phone call is also beneficial. Desk exercises can also help and include neck, shoulder and back stretches from a seated position. Incorporating these into your day will provide a great deal of relief and can go a long way in reversing and preventing further damage from sitting.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF YOGA TO BE PUT TO THE TEST People in Leicester are invited to take part in a study to discover whether yoga and light walking can be used effectively in the prevention of type two diabetes. Participants will be asked to take part in one session of yoga and one session of light intensity walking in a series of visits to Leicester Diabetes Centre at Leicester General Hospital. Speaking on International Yoga Day, yoga expert, Dr Natalie Darko, said: “Research has shown that individuals of South Asian descent have an elevated risk of certain chronic diseases, such as type two diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “The risk of developing these diseases can be reduced by engaging in a healthy lifestyle. One component of a healthy lifestyle is engaging in

physical activity. However, previous research from our team has shown that, for whatever reason, people from South Asian communities engage in less physical activity compared to other ethnic groups.” Dr Darko added: “This study will test and compare whether yoga and light intensity walking can be effectively used in the prevention of type two diabetes.” The study is being run by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers with a specific interest in helping individuals engage in a healthier lifestyle. It will involve six visits to the Leicester Diabetes Centre.

£9m cash injection into healthcare innovation People in Leicestershire are set to benefit from a £9million cash injection aimed at improving residents’ health and well-bring by speeding up the adoption of cutting-edge healthcare research and innovation

T

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) funding will enable more vital work to take place to tackle the region’s health and care priorities, putting in place more evidenced-based frameworks to drive up standards of care and save both time and money. As a result of the funding boost, NIHR CLAHRC (Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care) East Midlands will continue until at least 2024. The organisation is a partnership of health and social care universities, industry, the voluntary sector and patients which sets out to improve patient outcomes by turning research into cost-saving and high-quality care through cutting-edge innovation. With bases at the University of Nottingham and University of Leicester, it will continue under the new name of NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) East Midlands from October 1 and will also have a remit to lead nationally on research into black and minority ethnic communities and multi-morbidity thanks to its expertise in these areas. Professor Kamlesh Khunti, Director of the NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands and Professor of Primary Care, Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, said: “Receiving this funding means we can continue to lead world class, applied health research and build on the successes we have already achieved in speeding up the adoption of research and innovation into frontline health and care. “We will share our knowledge nationally and collaborate with colleagues as we all collectively work towards improving the lives of people through research.” ARC East Midlands will be hosted by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and work in collaboration with the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network. Mark Howells is Head of Research and Evidence at Nottinghamshire Healthcare. He said: “The research and innovation facilitated by this collaboration is making a real difference to patients with a wide variety of physical and mental health problems. “The more we can innovate the more we can implement brand new treatments and strategies, which really improve lives.” Work carried out by NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands includes helping to prevent type two diabetes by embedding an education programme designed to help people avoid the condition. In April last year, the organisation also continued to

support the rollout of a risk score for type two diabetes in South Asian languages with the release of a Punjabi version following Gujarati and Bangladeshi versions. Other successes include implementing and assessing an online tool that assists diagnosing children with ADHD, lowering NHS costs by 22 per cent and cutting delays to diagnosis by 145 days. The funding is part of a £135 million commitment to drive improvements to healthcare by helping to embed the learning from research into the frontline of healthcare sooner.

best technology Zoe Darkins, Director of Inside-Out Laser Clinics, talks about the best innovative technology for their clinic

Z

Zoe, who has more than 15 years’ experience in the laser and aesthetic industry as well as specialist in-depth training, had previously used many devices, however Lynton has always stood out from other companies. When it came to selecting a device for Inside-Out Laser Clinics, Zoe picked the Lynton Lumina: “I took the time to deliberate over the different technology, but what decided it for me was that Lynton are a national company who have been established for 25 years, and they are highly regarded within the NHS; the fact that this technology is driven by its results spoke volumes for us here at

Inside-Out Laser Clinics. “Giving our clients the best care is what motivates us, and we felt that acquiring this technology is the best way to give them a professional experience and exceptional results,” Zoe said. The popular laser and IPL machine combines multiple technologies in one stand-alone aesthetic platform; it can treat over 24 different aesthetic concerns, including laser hair and tattoo removal, anti-ageing treatments and skin resurfacing. The device works by using wavelengths of light energy to target

specific concerns. For hair removal we target the melanin inside the hair follicle, for tattoo removal we target the ink inside the skin’s dermis, for skin rejuvenation we are stimulating collagen. “From the first consultation, we give our clients the support and expert advice they need; we are there every step of the way throughout their journey to feeling good about themselves, on the Inside-Out.”

The Shaking Meditation TRE (Tension Release Exercises) is a new way of healing and trauma-proofing your brain. Priti Coles tells us how and what the benefits are

I

In our day to day life we don’t have to look too far to find a source of stress. Deadlines to meet, noisy neighbours, arguments with loved ones, financial concerns, work restraints, social/ domestic violence, natural disasters and the circle of life and death, just to name a few . It’s no secret that stress and tension have a profoundly negative effect on our lives and bodies; holding on to chronic patterns of stress and trauma can affect the physiology of the body and eventually cause physical aches and pains, gastrointestinal problems, severe illnesses, depression, anxiety and distorted sleep patterns. According to the Mental Health Foundation, last year three out of four people in the UK admitted to being stressed, having feelings of being overwhelmed and unable to cope. When we feel overwhelmed our bodies get tight and rigid, old parts of the brain also become stuck and we get stuck in fight or flight mode. We accept this as a normal state to be in! In this mode we are continuously braced for danger, mentally and physically. Adrenalin and cortisol flow like a chemical soup inside of us. Being in this state for short bursts is fine, but damaging if we can’t discharge the chemicals and relax again. So how do you get that sense of balance and joy back into your life? There are lots of solutions on offer in our western culture, from CBT, yoga, counselling, mindfulness and meditation. But what if these don’t suit?

What if you don’t like talking, sitting still, or confronting painful memories and experiences? Well, now there is a radical way of releasing tension, stress and trauma. TRE (Tension Release Exercises) sometimes referred to as a ‘shaking meditation’ is creating waves in the wellness industry. It is a unique way of shaking out stress and tension and reconnecting back to the body, helping you to discharge and let go. Seven simple exercises are used to ignite a primitive response within the body, causing gentle shakes and vibrations. The therapeutic tremors help to release stress or tension accumulated from difficult situations and/or traumatic life experiences. Helping to re-set, re-balance, re-new and downgrade the nervous system so that you are not in a permanent state of ‘fight or flight’. You don’t need to be a gym bunny or a yoga expert to carry out the exercises as they can be adapted to anyone. You don’t need specialist clothing and you don’t need to talk about difficult things or confront painful experiences and there is no need to get lost in overwhelming emotions. TRE helps to awaken new senses within and helps to reconnect you with your body and mind. It is safe and selfregulating and you work at your own pace. Once learnt it is a powerful tool in your ‘life coping toolbox!’ After a session, clients comment about being calmer, centred, balanced, lighter, with feelings of peace and a deep awareness of how they feel

connected to their bodies. Symptoms of pain are also reduced. Relationships flow better and life in general starts to feel good! TRE was devised by Dr. David Berceli (an American neurologist who has worked in areas of conflict and natural disasters all over the world) originally to help people affected by wars in the Middle East and North Africa. It is now offered en masse to survivors of natural disasters, war veterans and returning soldiers suffering with PTSD. I am a body worker and a Craniosacral therapist; I have been working with the body in various ways for over 25 years. I truly believe that the body keeps the score and I am passionate about reminding people to trust the wisdom of their body and to discover their innate ability to heal themselves. It is so important to be fully present and enjoy each day and precious time with loved ones; TRE can help you to achieve this and trauma-proof your brain. TRE is you healing you. I offer one to one sessions and stress release classes for employers and their staff. 07795 361 288 priticoles.co.uk pritibodies1@gmail.com NICHE | 77

Authentically

successful leadership What does it take to be a successful businesswoman and leader? Toughness and power suits? A stern exterior? Harsh words?

T

These are the images that can often crop up when we consider a successful business woman and what she looks like. However this stereotype might make a businesswoman, but it’s highly unlikely to make a successful one. Why? Over time women have adopted masculine traits in society rather than utilising our innate feminine ones; the result is a rather mixed bag of some success littered with a feeling of disconnection from what we are doing and from ourselves. So often ‘successful’ businesswomen come to me with a sense that something is missing, that they aren’t fully realising their success or in fact enjoying it. By tapping into and realising our true potential as a result of being

WOMEN HAVE ADOPTED MASCULINE TRAITS IN SOCIETY RATHER THAN UTILISING OUR INNATE FEMININE ONES aligned with our innate wisdom, we can achieve a lasting success which will not only reflect in the boardroom but in our personal lives too. When our authentic leadership and self emerges, when we get in touch with who we really are, and when we have full autonomy over our choices and decisions it can create

a powerful ripple effect on our lives. When we go about our lives from this place, we no longer look for external sources of what others deem to be ‘successes’ or ‘failures’, but we react according to our own source of what this might be and mean for us. The ripple effect carries onwards to your relationships with others – so those of your co-workers, your team members and those you might network with in the business world. When we show up as our true selves with others, typically success in many forms follows. Often, so too does happiness. 07808 783 483 debbiemoorecoaching.com

LIFESTREAM FLOATATION & WELLNESS CENTRE

Revitalise, rejuvenate,

recover

Mohammed Shaikh, the owner of Lifestream Floatation and Wellness Centre, tells Niche about the benefits of floatation therapy and whole body cryotherapy

I

Imagine placing yourself in a tank where you are cut off from outside stimulations – floating, alleviated from gravity. As you lay there, weightless, your brain enters a deeply relaxed state; this is called flotation therapy, a treatment that is fast becoming known as one to treat a multitude of physical and psychological conditions, including back pain, anxiety and stress. “Thanks to technology, we have become a lot more ‘switched on’ but for longer, and now we find it harder to relax and enjoy ‘downtime’, but with a sixtyminute session in a floatation tank will enable you to switch off as you are deprived of your senses,” Mohammed said. The treatment occurs in a sensory deprivation tank, is heated to skin temperature and is saturated with Epsom salt to enable you to float and replicate the effects of the dead sea. The

concept for his business evolved from a pivotal moment in his life: when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. “It was like a rug had been pulled from underneath my feet. I was set on one path and life has led me down a different one. “My illness spurred me to research natural solutions and therapies, which was when I came across floatation therapy. There is an astounding number of both physical and mental benefits.” Now fully recovered, Mohammed set up the Lifestream Floatation and Wellness Centre that uses floatation therapy as well as whole body cryotherapy to help clients. Whole-body cryotherapy is an extremely cold treatment that can speed up recovery, increase energy, reduce injuries and improve sleep – which is used by Leicester City footballers and rugby players regularly. Their non-invasive

MY ILLNESS SPURRED ME TO RESEARCH NATURAL SOLUTIONS AND THERAPIES, WHICH WAS WHEN I CAME ACROSS FLOATATION THERAPY

treatments help clients to recover, rejuvenate and revitalise. There have been many studies into the benefits of floating, and one 2018 study shows that as little as just one 60-minute session was capable of significantly reducing stress and anxiety, as well as chronic neck and back pain. The therapy can also help skin issues, pain and conditions such as fibromyalgia, Crohn’s Disease, rheumatic pain and managing weight. “I don’t believe in one individual method that can help; looking into many natural solutions and find the right one for you. With floatation therapy and whole body cryotherapy, the results are phenomenal for a multitude of conditions – even phobias.” 0116 270 0170 lifestreamwellness.co.uk NICHE | 79

Health and wellness innovators are leading the way to help people live healthier, happier lives, by learning to deal with stress and changing their eating and exercise habits so that they can maintain a healthy weight and keep their bodies moving. Emotional health, including satisfying personal relationships, are also critical to health and wellness. Bev Sankey founded Bev Sankey Healthy Living, a relatively new undertaking which focuses on promoting health and wellness whilst achieving a work-life balance. She feels passionately about spreading the word, based on her own health struggles over the years. From personal experience, Bev knows how much we change our health with lifestyle practices. “What motivated me to get

into health and wellness was my introduction to the Arbonne products and Innovative Business model in 2012. I also found vegan and gluten free products without additives very appealing,” Bev said. Arbonne’s approach to wellness is from the inside out: “My advice is that people should make personal wellbeing a priority, including balance in mind, body, and soul; they should focus on exercise, meditation and relaxation. “Gratitude, a positive mindset, and good nutrition [focusing on what people put into their bodies daily and taking care of their gut health through the consistent intake of healthy nutrients] are also integral to the health and wellness equation. “What I find most rewarding is helping other people take responsibility

Say goodbye

to the brow pencil The trend for fuller, defined eyebrows doesn’t appear to be going anywhere and yet for some of us perfect eyebrows don’t come easy – so, what’s the answer?

E

Eyebrows – who knew as we plucked away in the ‘90s to achieve Kate Moss’s barely there brow look, that fuller, thicker, defined brows would be as important as our hair dos today?! For the last few years eyebrows have been BIG in the news and on our faces with women everywhere doing all they can to perfect their face-framing hairs in accordance with the latest fashion must-have. But, how many of us really have the time to painstakingly fill in the gaps and define every single morning? Not many. Microblading is the revolutionary semi-permanent brow technique which is changing the face of the beauty industry one hair stroke at a time. Microblading involves applying each hair stroke meticulously using a hand-held tool. The technique takes at

least 90 minutes, but the results are astounding with many only wishing that had found the procedure sooner. The matched pigment is placed under the layers of skin, making it a kind of cosmetic tattoo, with a colour boost needed 12-18 months later. It requires great skill from the makeup artist – the colour must be matched with the client’s skin and hair tone and applied with symmetry and precision. A careful ‘mapping’ of the brows and how they should sit on the face starts the procedure, with numbing cream applied to ease any slight discomfort. Then the small strokes are applied until the desired look is achieved. With minimal aftercare and amazing results it is the perfect treatment for those looking to achieve a full, defined look. Of course, as with any semi-permanent procedure

OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE ESTABLISHED OURSELVES AS ALMOST OBSESSIVE ABOUT BRINGING THE LATEST PROCEDURES AND METHODS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO LEICESTER

you will want to ensure that the treatment is performed by highly skilled people – and the team at Beau Aesthetica are exactly that, making it their passion to continue to invest in their expertise and skill set. Am explains: “Over the years we have established ourselves as almost obsessive about bringing the latest procedures and methods from all over the world to Leicester and microblading is one of those procedures. The results are incredible and really to help our clients feel good!” So, those hours spent hiding behind the eyebrow pencil and investing in growth serums are now a thing of the past with the advancements adopted by the team at Beau. 0116 270 9141 beauaesthetica.com NICHE | 81

Vogue, sketches

and creativity

Niche journalist Emily Kirton drops by the Betty Brown Atelier to talk inspiration, sustainable fashion, Dior and the new collection

A

An established boutique and clothing brand, Betty Brown has been the go-to for women wanting stylish, high quality clothing and occasion wear for the last five years. Today, as I walk through the doors, I could be stepping into an Atelier in the heart of Paris behind the scenes of a fashion house. Greeted by Betty Brown’s stylish designer and proprietor Sukhina Garcia, I am aware of the fashionable surroundings but also the warmth of its creator. With Sukhinas’ workspace towards the back of the Atelier, which includes a large cutting table and walls graced with fashion bibles, Vogues and sketches, she tells me that it’s become one of her favourite places to be: “I love that this space allows me to be around the everyday woman that I draw my inspiration from. They can see me work and I can get inspiration from them as I’m designing and making. It sparks my creativity and makes the whole process really enjoyable!” The brand has recently undergone changes to the relationships they have with

manufacturers and suppliers too, with Sukhina’s commitment to sustainability and vegan ethics influencing her choices. “We are already 85 per cent vegan with our collections and by this time next year we will be 100 per cent. For me it’s important to create clothing that aligns with my values. We want our customers to look good and live kindly by doing so. The choices we make when we buy our clothes is important, so too is how I create them.” Her upcoming Autumn/ Winter collection is perfect for the working woman she tells me, with pieces designed to last year after year in quality and style. Attracting the stylish set from London and beyond, the discerning modern shopper is looking for something which does more than provide rail upon rail of the same clothes in a variety of colours. We want something which allows us to not only express our personal style and something we can have fun with, but also something which has been created ethically. “I always make collections which are interchangeable and really

FOR ME IT’S IMPORTANT TO CREATE CLOTHING THAT ALIGNS WITH MY VALUES. WE WANT OUR CUSTOMERS TO LOOK GOOD AND LIVE KINDLY BY DOING SO

there is something for every woman, whatever her lifestyle. Yes, I am inspired by the working woman and creating affordable, high quality capsule wardrobes for her to express her style from desk to dinner. I always want my clothes to make a woman feel comfortable, confident and just really good about herself!” The Stoneygate Atelier is now home to an area for women to work from, with Sukhina keen to provide a creative hub feel for those that need it. “I wanted to invite businesswomen and friends to come and have a coffee and work from the space too. It’s complimentary and is really just something I’ve always wanted to do – I love that we can all be busy working away on our current projects under the same roof.” We finish our catch-up discussing the V&A’s Dior exhibition: “I often take trips to London for inspiration and the Dior exhibition is so good – if you love clothes, you have to go, Emily!” And go, I shall. Activate your

SmartCell Quit giving your precious time to things that do not work or work very little for you and activate your SmartCell says leading skin expert Natalie Manroe

T

The promises made by the beauty industry are astounding but possibly un-intentional due to luck of long-term research and vast growth of market behind it. Bombarded by the latest facials, products and short-term fixes we can find ourselves not only spending a fortune, but also not getting the lasting results we desire. Left disappointed and disheartened towards expensive creams and non-invasive treatments, many are turning to injectables, which isn’t necessarily a preferred choice but perhaps resorted to in desperation or quick fix. One woman tells Niche what she believes about the industry and how by looking at our health holistically we can feel, better, look younger and make a huge impact to our micro-biom. Natalie Manroe, with almost 20 years in the industry in a vast variety of capacities, is determined to alter the messages we receive and the way in which we view beauty industry, fitness and health and our approach to it to shave years off of how we look and feel. “Non-invasive treatments do work BUT we

need a complex and varied combination for it to work with a much higher regularity combined with unique diets for different concerns. I simply was fed up of working in industry for so many years where single treatments sold by the industry do not live up to expectations given and now, I have found what works and want to share the knowledge. It worked for me for years and now is working for those who are in our programs.” The concept worked for Natalie for years and wanting to give something back she knew she had to prove that the concept works. “Our research has taken 12 months with members having 3-5 combinations of treatments on a weekly basis. We found that skin cell composition only started to respond to change on week 12 and not because of treatments being ineffective, but because of our cell biology requirements and needs. It has to be frequent, repetitive and accumulative. We found extensive use of creams also isn’t the best for everyone. For some skin types it works as a type of ‘fabric conditioner’ and actually more so inflicts

gravitational sag. We found many treatments on the market works for some genetics and yet does absolutely nothing to others. It’s all very individual.” Skin conditions commonly thought of as being down to genetics such as skin pigmentation and dark circles is not necessarily the case. “With the right treatments the results are very impressive. My other favourite treatments work on acne and acne scaring. It’s so rewarding to be able to find and offer results to those who need it or as a preventative to teen acne.” Their industry leading knowledge and results-based services which alter an individuals’ unique micro-biom and activates their SmartCell gives impressive long-term results. Natalie comments; “We all forget life isn’t about how long we will live; it’s about quality of life we will have when we are older. After all, you can have another house or a car, but you can’t have another body.” 0333 012 4708 Urimage.co.uk

I visited Bill’s Restaurant in July for their new menu launch; it was absolutely fantastic. We were welcomed inside by friendly staff, who were very attentive throughout our visit. We had a bowl of olives whilst we waited for our food and they were the best olives I’ve ever had. For starters, we had the rosemary and pea hummus with garlic sourdough and chicken sesame dumplings; the flavours were well-balanced, the dumplings were exquisite, nice and crispy – I definitely wanted more. For our mains, we had the crab and courgette risotto and paprika, garlic and chili half-roasted chicken; again, they did not disappoint! The risotto

This is easily my favourite place to eat around Leicestershire; the Blackhorse has a great atmosphere, amazing friendly staff and a wonderful selection of ales and beers to choose from. There’s no better place to visit following a bit of family time at Market Bosworth Country Park. If the weather is warm, there is a fantastic outside space with a lovely terrace to sit and relax on, and in the winter months, the inside is so warm and welcoming. But ultimately it’s about the food and the chefs at the Blackhorse are amazing. My personal preference is the fillet of english beef served with charred asparagus, crispy onions, potato fritter and a beautiful bearnaise

had a really nice smoky tomato stock that went well with the crab, and the chicken was well seasoned and tender – it just fell off the bone! To finish, though I was nearly full, we had the ice cream and warm strawberry dusted doughnuts. I honestly don’t think I’ve tasted better doughnuts than the ones we had here. They weren’t too doughy, and came with a beautiful white chocolate sauce. The atmosphere was really chilled and relaxing, but upbeat at the same time; the decor was quirky, it was great. We sat at a bar table so we had a great view of the restaurant and bar. I would highly recommend visiting this fantastic restaurant.

sauce. The premium cut of beef with the very best home-made fritters is just what is required after a busy afternoon running around with the kids. And if I’ve been particularly good I treat myself to a chocolate and salted caramel tart served with unbelievable banana ice cream; this is something special. They also do the best champagne breakfast for those special occasions with fresh breads, pastries and croissants followed by a classic English breakfast and if you wish, a nice glass of the bubbly stuff. I thoroughly recommend a visit to the Blackhorse, Market Bosworth – whatever the occasion.

TAMATANGA

Tamatanga.com 0116 444 3434 HIGHCROSS, 1 SHIRES LANE, LEICESTER LE1 4AN Indian food is a personal favourite of mine, but despite having a wide choice of Indian restaurants in Leicester I was delighted to hear that Tamatanga was coming to Leicester Highcross. With a further two restaurant locations in the UK – Nottingham and Birmingham – I had already heard great things. Making all their food from scratch with fresh local ingredients right down to grinding their own spices and cooking from clay ovens their promise of fresh, fabulous and flavoursome shone through. The environment is bright, modern and atmospheric, it felt very social and like it was bringing something new. We opted for poppadums and pickle tray to start,

followed by a curry bowl of chicken khurana for me which was creamy and delicious whilst Jenny had chicken and lamb kebabs cooked in the clay oven – we shared both half and half and we both remarked on the soft succulent meat which was cooked to perfection. The sides of rice, naan and onion bhaji were delicious too, in fact, the bhajis are building quite the reputation in the area – I have discussed them with a few people now! To accompany our meal with drinks we really enjoyed the create your own G&T aspect, it complimented the experience perfectly. We are already looking forward to going back and trying more from the exciting menu.

PESTO AT THE WHITE HORSE pestorestaurants.co.uk 01455 822 394 LEICESTER LANE, DESFORD, LEICESTER LE9 9JJ From family meals to nights out with friends, Pesto is perfect for every occasion. Its relaxed environment and wonderful welcoming staff make you feel at home the moment you step in the door. It has a beautiful bistro charm with Italian style art work and olive walls, but it’s the food that is the huge draw here and there’s plenty of choice that’s for sure. Pesto serve an extensive menu with over 40 dishes including an array of vegetarian and gluten free pasta options if required, so everybody is catered for here. Because Pesto offers ‘Carta di Piattini’ – simply translated, ‘small Plate’

– you can choose more than one dish tapas style. Carbonara is always the main dish for me, delicious fettuccine served in Pesto’s carbonara sauce, white wine and fresh Gran Moravia cheese, this dish is incredible and I go back to it time and again. For dessert, when I do indulge I usually go for the biscotto al cioccolato, a warm gooey chocolate tray bake with ice cream or the formaggi, a selection of Italian cheeses that come with homemade caramelised onion chutney and a fantastic Italian ciabatta. Give Pesto a go – you won’t be disappointed.

TURTLE BAY turtlebay.co.uk 0116 262 9993 HIGHCROSS, LEICESTER LE1 4SA Turtle Bay has long been a favourite of mine since it opened in the buzzing Highcross area of Leicester; its relaxed atmosphere is renowned, and the party feel of the cocktail bar taking centre stage helps give it a social feel. Serving delicious Caribbean cooking – it’s dubbed ‘food that speaks to the soul’ and it does, it speaks to my soul and my stomach! With news of the new menu I visited with a friend and we were as impressed as ever. It still has all the classics but with some new additions creating a menu packed with choice, and something for everyone like the vegetarian crunchy vegetables cooked in a smoked paprika and coconut sauce

with coconut rice and peas. The famous 2-4-1 cocktails kick the evening off nicely and the choice is always extensive with the bar staff really knowing their stuff. The new menu is a big draw and despite me having a lengthy ‘favourites’ list I went for the hot chick burger – panko chicken thigh, cheese, jerk mayo, rocket and pickled vegetables with a side of mac ‘n’ cheese. It was delicious, I mean, lipsmackingly good! It’s most definitely not ‘clean eating’ it’s comfort food at its best that’s for sure. The dessert menu looked good too – but with the cocktails being so good we opted for another of those for afters instead! NICHE | 87

It’s so important to me to not only invest in our people and our pubs but also to invest in our surroundings. If Leicester is at its best, then we will attract more visitors as a city. We have worked hard at building relationships with other local businesses, including the King Richard III Visitors Centre with whom we are currently offering anyone that dines with us a free visit to the centre. It’s about giving visitors and the people of Leicester the best experience possible when visiting the city. We are really pleased with the outcome of the joint investment in King Richard III and love that we have brought something different yet traditional into the city.

A LEASING JOURNEY IAN HALLAM IMI Regional Sales Manager at 360 Autoleasing Having worked in the industry for over 40 years I have gained a great deal of experience and built countless trustworthy, reputable contacts with dealerships, brokers and car repair firms. I strive to make the leasing process as straightforward as possible, first discussing details at length so that they can get the best value for money considering mileage, tax and lifestyle needs. From here I show them the vehicles currently available for lease

on the market via the internet. Then, they choose their vehicles according to their budget and the rest is taken care of by us. Our service doesn’t stop after they sign – far from it. I continuously check in personally with clients throughout their contract to see how things are going. I make regular visits before the end of the contract at intervals to provide suggestions for repairs, take photographic signed evidence of the repairs and monitor the condition of the vehicle before it’s due to make its return journey. All of this is to prevent costly discrepancies charged to the

vehicle later on. I believe so strongly in this whole process that I visit potential clients who currently use other leasing companies to help them avoid these excessive charges. For the client, the journey and experience they have with us is everything. We build trusting, longterm relationships with our clients and our reputation is strong and getting ever stronger.

The Lure Of The Obscure

A

Art house movies are one of my very favourite things. Despite a distinct penchant for a Marvel blockbuster, my love of the original Star Wars trilogy and my deep devotion to 007, there also lurks a positive frisson whenever I discover something obscure which takes me by surprise and takes my breath away. The Phoenix has always been my go-to venue to watch those films unavailable in the corporate multiplexes: films about Calabrian goat herders, true life dramas about a Spanish couple starring in Swedish sex education videos following the collapse of the periodical encyclopaedia market, a black comedy starring a couple of wheelchair bound neighbours travelling across countries to bring about a corporate malfeasance case, or six South

TRACEY MILLER Partner of The Miller Partnership

American short films on the glories of revenge. Almost anything with subtitles, anyone? Watching Le Quattro Volte, Torremolinos 73, Aaltra, and Wild Tales (my four examples above) were fabulously surprising: zero levels of expectation combined with zero knowledge of the plot prior to watching, the director or the actors (many of whom are often megastars in their home countries), led to an outstanding cinematic experience each time. To be honest, Wild Tales did star an actor I already knew and loved, Ricardo Darin, who had been in three of my favourite Argentine films: Nine Queens, a Hustle or Grifters style con caper, The Secret In Their Eyes, a cold case thriller with a shocking ending, and Carancho, a savage indictment of

legal and insurance fraud around road traffic ‘accidents’. So, I was both shocked and awed that his appearance in one of the segments of Wild Tales, great though it most assuredly was, actually wasn’t the best part in the movie. After the initial terrifying road-rage instalment, the final wedding segment was the best part. So again, if you’re someone who can happily handle subtitles, watch this movie! Wild Tales, despite two less engaging elements, hands down smashed all opposition to be the Talking Pictures Film of 2014 and, as are all the films mentioned above, it’s available on Amazon or SkyStore.

Melton care home residents have a roaring time at

Fire station open day Residents from a Melton Mowbray care home had a blast at a Fire Station’s Open Day earlier this month

T

The Amwell, a residential, nursing, dementia and respite care home in Asfordby Road, arranged a visit to a fire station part of their extensive activities and events programme. Residents were given an inside glimpse into how the fire station in Nottingham Road operates on a day-to-day basis. The day provided fun and entertainment for visitors of all ages, with a bouncy castle and climbing wall for young families, as well as a barbeque and refreshments. Melton Fire Station also arranged a tombola and raffle, with all proceeds going towards the Firefighters Charity. With the local Melton Mowbray radio station – 103 The Eye – in attendance to promote the event, ‘it was a local day out not to be missed’ commented Tracy Heyes, care home manager at The Amwell. Tracy said: “We are always looking for new activities and trips that we can take our residents on and the Fire Station Open Day was the perfect day out. With our activities programme, we aim to provide enjoyable and entertaining activities that give our residents a sense of independence and the chance to form closer bonds with each other. “Our residents really enjoyed touring the station’s facilities and learning about the importance of fire safety. Fire safety is also really 01664 882 525 important to us here at The Amwell, and we make sure to regularly theamwellcare.com organise fire drills so that our residents know what to do in the info@theamwellcare.com event of a fire.” 98 | NICHE

#BleedForHayley After fantastic success in their #BleedForHayley campaign, Eileen Richards Recruitment have partnered with the Leicester Donor Centre to launch a following campaign running from November 25 to December 6, 2019

T

The Bleed for Hayley campaign was launched after family friend, Hayley Perks, tragically lost her battle with leukaemia at just 36 years of age. Having received 67 blood and platelet transfusions throughout her fight (which was a combination of 536 people’s blood donations), Hayley was an avid supporter and promoter for encouraging more people to donate blood within Leicester. In her memory, Eileen Richards Recruitment with support from Hayley’s family, launched the #BleedForHayley campaign which set out to encourage more professionals and businesses throughout the region to give blood. The campaign saw 68 donors head down to the Leicester Donor Centre to #BleedForHayley – a

record of group bookings so far for the centre! Donors included professionals from a wide range of firms including East Midlands Chamber, Gateley’s Legal, Berkeley Insurance, Next and Hastings Direct, Emery Johnson Astills, Plug Bathrooms, Mocha Marketing, Soar Valley Press, Mattioli Woods, Cross Productions, Kazzoo IT, MicroFresh, DHL, Charity Link, Midnight Baker, Sarah Higgins Corporate Coaching, Oaklands School, Corporate Architecture, BHIB Insurance, Libra Drinks and Steamin’ Billy. Escaping

the wild On Wednesday June 26, 26 brave candidates ventured out of their comfort zone in aid of local charity Hope Against Cancer, in order to escape the wild

T

The candidates, who were from many local businesses including Leicester Riders Andy Thompson and Harrison Gamble, were mentally and physically challenged in this three-day adventure, with many facing fears and overcoming them! The participants spent three days in the Lake District, all the while living outdoors, and were put to the test by trekking 20km across rugged terrain, crossing rivers; it was certainly no walk in the park, but everyone had a fantastic time and raised over a staggering £9,000! From trekking up mountains, jumping off cliffs, swimming in open water, abseiling from huge heights, to scrambling through caves and even eating insects in a bush-tucker trial-like event – no one was prepared for what activities they undertook! Some of the participants from this year’s event include Declan Kiely from Claremont Financial Planning Ltd, Ian Hallam from 360 Autoleasing, Jodie Fedorko from

Leicester Garden Design, Scarlett and Katy from ER Recruitment and Leanne Bonner-Cooke from Evolve IT. Tracey Hallam, Corporate and Events Fundraiser at Hope Against Cancer, truly faced her phobias on this expedition – but really enjoyed the experience. She commented: “I love the way people came together to overcome fear and obstacles. We have gone beyond business contacts, we are family. I am looking forward to participating next year and sharing the journey with existing faces and welcoming some new.” And with that said, if you fancy a challenge that will put you to the test, but that’s guaranteed to be the most rewarding experience, then book your place next year to see if you’re tough enough to ‘escape’’ the wild! 0116 270 0101 hopeagainstcancer.org.uk tracey@hfcr.org

Zinthiya Trust is A vital charity that supports people who have suffered violence, poverty and abuse turns 10 years old this month, and are inviting you to celebrate with them

O

On September 27, Zinthiya Trust invites you to join them for an evening of celebration at College Court, Leicester; tickets are priced at £39 per person or £375 for a table of ten. The Trust sees this as the perfect opportunity to thank all their supporters who have been on the journey with them since its inception. The Zinthiya Trust was set up by Zinthiya Ganeshpanchan, who said: “Growing up in Sri Lanka I have witnessed the violence women and girls undergo and seen abject poverty and social exclusion. I have witnessed the impact of a prolonged conflict that led to communities being torn apart. What I have seen has taught me to value humanity, democracy and civil liberties that this country offers that we so often take for granted. I was also surprised by the social inequalities that I had seen here in the UK that led me

to set up the charity.” The charity provides support to women and girls fleeing violence, people who are homeless or living in substandard accommodation, people facing food and fuel poverty, ex-offenders and people in long term unemployment. Their work aims to prevent abuse and poverty, enabling people to live safe and fulfilling lives. The services of the trust include

providing one-to-one support to those fleeing violence, providing money and energy advice, welfare and benefits advice, skills and volunteering opportunities. Their work has changed countless lives in the last decade and their work will continue to assist those who need it most. We are very greatful to all the businesses who have sponsored the event, donated raffle prizes and also purchased tickets. This event would not have been possible without their support. If you would like to be a sponsor, donate a raffle prize or support a project please contact the chatity. 0116 254 5168 zinthiya.trust@gmail.com

creating possibilities for disabled children

Bamboozle’s production

Storm to open in Shanghai In early September Bamboozle Theatre Company’s artistic director Christopher Davies and musician Craig Byrne flew out to Shanghai to complete rehearsals and open the Chinese version of their production of Storm

T

This is the culmination of a two-year process during which Bamboozle has worked with the Shanghai Children’s Art Theatre (SHCAT) to produce Chinese versions of two of their shows: Down to Earth and Storm. Down to Earth is a production for children with profound learning disabilities while Storm, based on Shakespeare’s Tempest, is designed for children on the autistic spectrum. In autumn 2017 the Bamboozle team auditioned and recruited seven actors and two musicians. Since then they have received training in the Bamboozle Approach, performed alongside Bamboozle actors during performances of Storm at SHCAT and worked in Shanghai special schools to better understand how to apply the Approach with children on the autistic spectrum.

THE CHINESE ACTORS AND MUSICIANS HAVE DEMONSTRATED A HUGE THIRST FOR LEARNING

Christopher said: “The Chinese actors and musicians have demonstrated a huge thirst for learning while their commitment and professionalism has meant that we have no hesitation in entrusting them to deliver our shows with the required integrity. Two of the actors, Amber and Peggy, even came to Leicester at their own expense to attend the Bamboozle Masterclass in January.” This ongoing project provides the opportunity for Bamboozle’s shows to reach many more learning-disabled children in China. The company are in discussions with theatres and festivals in Australia and Cairo to establish similar projects. 0116 255 2065 bamboozletheatre.co.uk NICHE | 103

Over the past year, Soft Touch Arts, 2018 Niche Business Awards Charity of the Year winner, has been piloting a Creative Enterprise Programme which supports young people to develop skills in art, craft, fashion and photography and learn how to sell and market their work. These talented young people all have life challenges which hold them back, such as anxiety, difficult family relationships or other issues. Many struggle in mainstream education and with the life-skills and experience they need to get a job. We’ve supported 53 young people in 2019, helping them to sell their work at local events, online and by undertaking art and photography commissions for businesses such as Eileen Richards Recruitment, Fothergill Wyatt and Way of Life apartments. “The weekly sessions motivated me to start thinking about setting up my own freelance business. I wouldn’t have considered this in my wildest dreams before!”

We’re organising the art auction to raise funds to keep this successful programme running and benefit more young people in 2020 and beyond.

The Auction takes place on the evening of 1st October 2019, from 6-9pm, and is kindly being supported by Mattioli Woods. We’ll have a bar provided by Burleighs Gin, delicious food from Chutney Ivy and live entertainment. Tickets are £20 which includes a free prize draw entry for a mystery piece of art. Our Auctioneer is Dickon Dearman of Churchgate Auctions with 25+ art pieces kindly donatied by well-known and up and coming artists such as Jonjo Elliott, Loz Atkinson, Jonathan Costall and from new local art gallery Adore Fine Art on Allendale Road. The event will be relaxed and fun and offers a chance to network with the artists and other business leaders. Whether you want something for your office or home, you could be in with the chance to snap up a piece by a future art world star! Auction artwork can be viewed prior to the auction at an exhibition from 24-28th September, 1-6pm, at Soft Touch Arts, 50 New Walk, Leicester LE1 6TF.
