YES – I’M ONE OF THOSE!

love everything about this season! Being in Victoria, I love the anticipation, the nip in the air; the hoping and waiting and wishing for snow…that likely won’t arrive. Yes, I lived through the Blizzard of ‘96 but that’s a rarity.

I love the smiles, the decorations and most of all the spirit of the season.

But I do have a confession. It’s not something I talk about openly, because I get looks and eye rolls. Yes, it’s true; I am one of those. A phrase I hear often after being asked the question, “Have you started your Christmas shopping?” I must admit this year I got off to a late start - August instead of June. I know I’m slipping! The goal for me is always to be finished and wrapped by December 1st.

I get asked frequently. “How do I do it?” Well for me, it’s about systems. I have a list – and yes I check it twice, three even four times. Every time someone mentions something they like throughout the year; I add it to the list.

Most important in this strategy: the list also tells me where I have hidden the presents, which is key! Made that mistake before, found gifts 3 months after Christmas! Yep I am one of those. Maybe that is why I love the season so much; I’ve found a way to avoid the traditional holiday stress. Presents out of the way means much more time for family and celebrating what is truly important.

For me the start of the Christmas season is always the Victoria Festival of Trees. If you haven’t been, GO! Why do I love this Festival? First of all, I’m honoured to work with the amazing people who organize the festival. They’re hardworking and passionate about the cause and it might surprise you to hear planning starts in January. It’s a fun way to support the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and, ultimately, help sick kids on our Island and throughout the province. I got involved because of one special little girl named Madeline (photo right). She stole my heart and her own stay at BC Children’s Hospital makes this event even more special and near and dear to me. I hear it all the time - it seems everyone has a story, a connection. While not related by blood, she is family to me and she is now healthy.

The Festival of Trees launch night is one of my very favourite nights of the year (November 18th this year). Wonderful businesses and organizations sponsor trees. Then the fun part, they decorate them. Oh the imagination! There is no shortage of creative genius in this city of ours. People go all out. On gala night, lights are being wrapped, garlands are flying, ornaments gingerly placed and smiles are everywhere as the evening unfolds. It is about more than having the best tree (although there are some remarkable trees); it really is about being together in that moment; having fun and celebrating. But the best part comes later after all the excitement of the night has faded. It is the look in the children’s eyes, the look in Madeline’s eyes. The joy, the wonder, the happiness; for me that is what the season is all about.

Usually the Festival of Trees is held at the Fairmont Empress, but this year because of renovations, the Festival has moved to The Bay Centre. New energy, new excitement and hey you can kick off your holiday shopping at the same time! Hope you have started your shopping! I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one kicking back with my eggnog latte leisurely enjoying the trees.

Christmas, Community & Children It is the season of good will, hope and miracles. And there are children on Vancouver Island that are counting on it to come into their lives this Christmastime.

Last year, 2,680 Vancouver Island children, logging more than 7,800 patient visits, were treated at BC Children’s Hospital. The CRD region accounted for more than 34% of these sick kids.

There is often a misconception that funds raised here do not benefit our local kids. Not true. Monies raised in our community helps give our sick children a fighting chance for health, for happiness… for life.

In its 24th year, the Victoria Festival of Trees (FOT) is as much a part of the holiday tradition in our wonderful city as seeing the Christmas lights at The Butchart Gardens and watching the Santa Claus Parade.

Samantha Geer became involved early in the event’s history, serving on the committee as well as FOT chair for two years. “Festival of Trees has played such a big part of Christmas in Victoria for many years. The evening this event kicks off truly brings tears to my eyes.”

Victoria Festival of Trees celebrates 24th year with new location at The Bay Centre

Due to renovations at the Fairmont Empress, the Victoria Festival of Trees will take place at The Bay Centre this year. For much of her young life, 12-year-old Madison Hooson spent many days at home, missing out on a quality of life every child deserves. Madison was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in November 2011 and was given a prescription to help ease the pain that never had longlasting relief. After fecal transplants in Portland, Oregon that proved to be unsustainable, Madison was admitted to BC Children’s Hospital where doctors found a medication to eliminate Madison’s pain. Today, Madison is healthy and full of energy. Even though Madison is in remission, her family still travels from Victoria to BC Children’s Hospital every eight weeks for infusions and follow-up. Madison will continue to be cared for by BC Children’s Hospital until she is an adult. Madison is this year’s Victoria Festival of Trees Champion child. Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse

hange is upon us! Everywhere I look, I see new wineries, an explosion of new micro-breweries, some very interesting distilleries, and most recently, a spattering of new craft cideries. In my Sommelier profession, it has proved most difficult keeping up with these changes. It has become a bit of a challenge to remember all of the new brands, production techniques and keeping up on all of the people involved in the production of these tasty products. I never knew drinking could be so exhausting! So, on I taste. Making sure to take time to explore all of the new explosions of taste that now seem ubiquitous. I tend to sort out what I can, always remain curious and ask plenty of questions, and I am always on the look-out for the new, premium, artisanal products.

A few years back, I was attending our VISA – Vancouver Island Sommelier Association – summer gathering, where we had a guest speaker, Kristen Jordan, owner of Sea Cider. Kristen was attending the event as a guest tasting/lecture. Instantly, I was impressed with Kristen’s knowledge of the industry; she had built this farm and cidery (opened in 2007) with her own initiative and hard work. As the lecture progressed, I could feel the passion Kristen put into her work and craft.

And what a craft it is. There are so many diverse aspects in producing traditionally fermented artisan ciders. It is astounding how many variables there are in producing these ciders â&#x20AC;&#x201C; starting with the various types of unique cider apples, the different methods of pressing, the specific yeasts to even the methods of aging. I quickly learned how similar craft cider production was to fine wine production. After the lecture, we tasted the ciders. I was amazed at how unique each cider was because there were so many complexities in flavours and textures. My personal favourite was the Rumrunner (also known as Prohibition). It is aged in rum-soaked bourbon barrels for a minimum of six months. At the VISA tasting it was cold, but I have also had it warm in the winter and it works. I found that all of the ciders, much like wine, have so many food pairing qualities. The Rumrunner pairs well with a steak or Caribbean foods while another of my favourites, Bittersweet, pairs well with rich meats such as pork belly, barbecued ribs, and sausage.

I encourage you to go and experience Sea Cider! The ten acre farm, home to 1,300 heritage apple trees consisting of 50 varieties, is in Saanichton, B.C. on Mt. St. Michael Road. The Ciderhouse is open from 11-4pm daily for tours and tastings of the ciders accompanied with local cheeses.

All the rage in the 1950s, 1960s and definitely the 1970s, those lime green florals and pyschadelic graphics have obviously left the world with a a bad taste in their mouths. Modern day wallpaper can be a things of beauty and brilliance in modern interior design. A company called Cole and Son (cole-and-son.com) designs incredible strippable wallpaper in the most fabulous patterns. However, if you are looking for something really unique, allow me to share some of my favourite examples of what modern technology and oversized murals can do for your walls.

Even chalk paint has come a long way in the last five years, and for $30 you can turn a boring wall into a focal point, with very little effort at all.

For maximum impact, you must check out an online company called Walls Republic, who are without question redefining the market for high quality, large scale wallcoverings. My favourite, shown above, is their take on an old barnboard wall with peeling paint. For all three of these options, ordering online is easy and delivery was quite quick, even for custom orders.

Two of my favourite things in life are Christmas and houses and it’s interesting to observe the dynamics that happen when you combine the two. A time when that crazy uncle has a little too much to drink or when young kids are running throughout the house in anticipation. The old photo albums get pulled out and elder members of the family relay memories from holidays past. The kitchen is a bustle of food preparation and the table always gets a little extra attention when set. The true essence of home is the dynamics of the people who dwell in the space.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of a perfectly bushy holiday tree with meticulously chosen decorations like the windows of Christmas Street at Hudson’s Bay. But last year I got more joy out of the little ‘Charlie Brown’ tree we cut down with our two little kids off the side of an old logging road. My daughter got the idea that she needed to choose her own little tree and she didn’t give up until she had it in her grasp. She pointed out every sad looking little tree along the way and when she found the one that was ‘just right’ she and her little brother took turns helping me with the saw and shouting “timber” at its anticlimactic tipping. This tree brought a sense of joy and pride to my two little children and proved again that creating a space that is warm and inviting is less about high end furniture and perfectly designed kitchens; it’s about those experiences that you will remember long after your chesterfield has lost its appeal. If you are looking to create an amazing sense of home for yourself or to entice a buyer down the road, think of the elements that bring magic to your house during the holidays and apply these principals all year long!

Separate showers, generally glass encased, continue to be the hottest trend in bathroom design, and in 2016, you will see more square footage earmarked for the shower.

The bathtub is the focus of a spa oasis for the master bathroom. Really shop around and compare because pricing can be extreme from one supplier to another for the very same tub. There are a few points to consider when shopping for bathtubs, so let’s take a closer look at the critical factors.

Walk-in open concept showers with walls of glass make a small bathroom appear bigger and brighter. For a true spa experience, add a waterfall or rain shower head from the ceiling or install a wall of head-to-toe body jets. When done correctly, the shower should blend harmoniously with the rest of the master bath, and not look like a big box stuck in the middle of a room, giving an appearance of cramped or limited space - far from the relaxed and elegant feel a spa inspired master bath should evoke.

1. Don’t purchase a tub that is too small – it will be a regrettable mistake. Buy a soaker tub that is large enough to fully recline in. There is nothing worse than trying to take a long soothing soak in a cramped space.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME?

f you have never experienced St. Regis hospitality, you are truly missing out on something very special. Not too long ago, I spent time in Mexico at The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort for the 2015 Punta Mita Beach Festival. It was a travel experience filled with luxury amenities, elegant dining, and white sand. While you may have travelled to Mexico many times, you haven’t been to this Mexico.

Punta Mita – which translates to Gateway to Paradise - is off the beaten path, as it should be. As you leave Puerto Vallarta proper, you travel through authentic Mexican countryside, enter into the State of Nayarit and eventually arrive at the gates of this 1,500 acre master planned community; greeted by the smiling faces of The St. Regis staff, armed with pitchers of ice cold Margaritas. This welcome was a glimpse into what became four days of what I can only describe as “always attentive but never intrusive” bliss.

My beachfront deluxe room was well appointed, with Mexican charm and high end finishes. The suite was large with a very private ocean view walk-out terrace, and a spa bathroom with an incredible private outdoor shower. As part of the longstanding signature St. Regis Butler Service, you are assigned a personal butler who is just a quick call, text or email away to get whatever you may need coffee, reading material, drinks, garment pressing or even a private party planned in your suite. They take care of everything, including packing and unpacking your suitcases.

This waterfront resort is casual elegance at its best. The sprawling property was carefully curated to maximize guest privacy; even with the hotel booked to capacity for the Beach Festival, private casitastyle accommodation and lush landscapes meant it never felt busy or crowded or rushed. In fact, I spent an entire afternoon on the pure white sand beach, swimming and lounging in a hammock with my book and my thoughts, and never saw another person.

Paraiso – yes, paradise.

The holiday season is upon us and so is that list of things than need to picked up, wrapped, baked, decorated, lit up, dug out of the attic, and set up, all while trying to catch our breath long enough to look like we’ve got it all pulled together by the time people show up ready to be entertained! Ok, deep breath... preparing for Christmas should be fun and sometimes that just means spinning it up a bit.

Inspire yourself with a new decorating scheme that’s fresh and different than your usual, you know the one, the one that you do every year. Once you have a theme, picking up wrapping paper, making handmade decorations, and creating sweet treats all become more fun. One of my favourite themes is a rustic west coast. It’s not only easy and affordable, it’s also enchanting.

Try a rustic a table scape using cedar boughs, sprigs of boxwood and candles set in glass jars. Create homemade place cards using recycled paper, a sprig of rosemary and your best handwriting. Wrapping presents in plain craft paper with simple hand tied bows and sprigs of greenery from your garden are as much fun to wrap as they are to deliver. Try making handmade decorations for your friends and family from things like thick branches cut into coins decorated with a simple snowflake stamp and bow.

Remember â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a better time of year to get your sparkle on, so pick up some glitter and spray glue to breath sparkly new life into older boring decorations. Even old plastic animal figurines look great sprayed and hung from the tree. Hanging mini-wreaths over a few of your kitchen cabinet doors will have you humming Christmas carols as you bake. Banisters look amazing wrapped in cedar boughs and mini white lights. If you have trouble getting power to your staircase to power your lights, try using battery operated LED string lights, available at Insideout Homestore (downtown on Store Street). Try hanging large pine cones or vintage bells on large satin ribbons in your windows.

Christmas trees can be decorated rustic too by simplifying the colours, playing with whites and silvers. Try things like white poinsettias blossoms, burlap ribbon, small birds, rustic handmade decorations, white mini lights and a little sparkle. Try wrapping tired coloured ornament balls in twine, burlap or strips of gray and cream fabrics to create a subtle neutral bauble.

Scents are such an important part of the holiday experience. Simmering cinnamon sticks, sprigs of fir branches, and oranges on your stove will fill your home with Christmas flavour. Burning scented candles or diffusers will also do the trick. AH

HOME RICHARD ROBLIN LEAVING PRIDE BEHIND BY: EMILY DOBBY

first met Richard and his lovely wife Eve when they stopped by Art Atelier 546 - where I work - to drop off some of his latest works. I felt honoured that such an internationally renowned contemporary artist would consider working with a four-month old gallery, but there he was - a sparkle in his eye, warmly explaining his latest direction while his wife unrolled the canvases on the floor. Richard Roblin’s work is found in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and has been exhibited at the MOMA in New York. He is represented by top commercial galleries across Canada and the United States. Art Atelier 546 is the only gallery in British Columbia that is showcasing his work. His career has spanned several decades and he has lived and travelled

throughout the globe - absorbing the teachings of many different cultures. Richard and his wife live on the island and he paints out of a studio in his home. Initially, Richard had intended to become an architect and as such his works are influenced by architectural plans - Frank Lloyd Wright’s in particular. In homage to

his idol, he took copies of the architectural plans for Wright’s Fallingwater and began painting in the rooms - line, form and colour are thus integral components. I fell in love with a piece we currently have on display that is part of the “Fallingwater” series - bright Mondrian hues inhabit the squares and rectangular rooms of the plan. I connected with Richard’s work instantly, having studied Frank Lloyd Wright for several years (a handful of his structures appeared in my thesis). I love seeing artists who explore every facet of geometry; not to mention Richard’s palette is bright and poppy; colours that would complement most walls. I am inspired by his shapes, colours and his painting method which is similar to that of Jackson Pollock yet more structured - a methodical yet intuitive dance around the canvas.

I recently had coffee with Richard and here is what we chatted about:

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST INFLUENCES THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? Oriental aesthetics, nature, architecture, and philosophy have been very powerful influences in my life as an artist, especially the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. The artists who have had the most powerful impact on me initially were my older brother Don who was very talented and first inspired me to draw, and then as I was growing up I was exposed to various Japanese art forms, particularly the paintings of the Momayama Period. When I first went to Montreal, I was very impressed with the paintings of Riopelle whose work I saw for the first time. Milton Avery, Motherwell, Hans Hofmann, Ben Nicholson. John McLaughlin and most of all Matisse were inspirational guides on my creative adventure.

WHY ARE COLOUR AND FORM SO SIGNIFICANT TO YOU? Quality of light has been my touchstone, informing my vision and forming my language in colour. The practice of painting is a laboratory of discovery and a playground of unlimited poetic possibility. The most essential discovery was that everything was basically abstract and completely open to interpretation, that it was not what I saw , but how I saw which gives me unbridled freedom.

THE TEACHINGS OF OTHER CULTURES HAVE INFLUENCED YOU. WHICH ONE RESONATES WITH YOU MOST? When I was 19 years old, I traveled to Vancouver for the first time and spent my days drawing the cityscapes and nature of the coast. I also spent a great deal of time studying Oriental philosophy at the main library. A few months later, I went to Montreal and was given a commission to paint a Japanese screen. I then returned to Vancouver to continue my independent studies in Oriental painting techniques and calligraphy. It was through my practice of calligraphy that I was to discover the poetry inherent in form. This practice awoke in me a lifelong appreciation and love of the Japanese cultural art forms including architecture.

YOU ARE INSPIRED BY ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, SCULPTURE AND PAINTING. WHICH ONE IN PARTICULAR? When I was in my mid-teens I discovered the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright when I found his biography A Testament. This book was a revelation to me in that it exposed the relationship of all forms of creative activity through architecture, design, sculpture, painting, all of which he practiced with great ease. Through his philosophy of integration and its application in his work he gave to me a spiritual guide.

YOU PAINT ON THE FLOOR. WHY? CAN YOU SHARE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? I have always perceived the act of painting as a dance. The dance process begins on the floor as I begin to map out the forms of the painting. Several compositions engage one formal dynamic. Circle, square, triangle is painted in sequence, one over the other. As I move around the work, the paint is allowed to flow in many directions creating its own geometry. Heavier applications of paint direct from the tube enhance the clarity and luminosity of the piece.

WHAT ABOUT FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST? His spirit of discovery.

HOW DOES LIVING ON VANCOUVER ISLAND AFFECT YOUR WORK? This is a place of unimaginable beauty, a wellspring of inspiration.

COLOUR YOUR WORLD ‘TIS THE SEASON TO DECORATE & RENOVATE BY: BEN BRANNEN | INTERIOR DESIGNER

ost people have enough to do leading up to and during the holiday season, but believe it or not, this is a great time to discuss and even get going on upcoming home renovations and redecoration. Many people get extended days off during the season, so why not take the time to get a project started that you have been putting off? At this time of year the whole family has a break from the day-to-day and has a bit of free time to relax and contemplate some changes to the home. That might mean creating the design plan that you do a little later in the year, or just adding a few new home accessories. Can you really renovate during the busy holiday season?

You can if you plan ahead and start early! I recommend preparing your home for the holidays a little earlier this year, and then embarking on some changes once you have finished with the

hustle and bustle and are ready to take them down again. Besides, chances are good that if you invite friends and extended family over earlier in the season, the higher the probability they aren’t already booked with other engagements.

I feel it is important to put aside at least one day to preparing the home with decorations and unleash those memories associated with previous years’ decorations. It seems that once you start decorating your home, the holiday spirit takes over. I like to plan next year’s holiday theme at the end of the current season - often finding inspiration during the holidays for another dynamic theme but having to wait until the following year to pull it together. While I love the memories attached to opening the holiday decoration storage bins, I always love adding a twist every year. The twist can simply be the additions of a new colour, or a completely different use of the decorations.

Holiday décor for me always starts with silver, gold or classic white. Now is the time of year to bring out all of your sparkly bits. To that I love adding a single feature color. Rather than the traditional red or green, I prefer to work with a deep rust or lime green. I like to bring nature in with large tree branches – they are amazing when hung from the ceiling over a table. Hang decorations from it or wrap it in mini lights for a festive look. I was lucky enough to find my neighbour had pruned their fig tree just in time for me to spray it white and hang it in the Bespoke Design Shop. It was perfect with glass bird decorations hanging from it. This year I plan to nest white birds in a similar branch. A walk through your local park and a trip to a local shop can supply you with all you need. Pick up holly, Spruce boughs and Cedar branches, white lilies and even a large bunch of baby’s breath. I like putting the white flower bundles in the tree to mimic snow. Don’t forget to add some winter greens like a small Spruce bough with a single flower, or a sprig of holly to the powder room

for a wintery scent. It will make visitors feel like special guests. If you don’t go overboard with glitter, you can leave some of the decorations up that have a wintery theme, rather than a specific holiday theme.

When it is time to put away the decorations, consider giving your home a fresh start for 2016. Now, I am not recommending removing a structural wall, but why not crack open a can of paint and start the new year with a fresh new colour scheme – after all, once the decorations are put away, you are well on your way to being a minimalist!

t’s hard to find a time of year that garners as much attention and excitement as does the Christmas season. We might lament the fact that stores and businesses start the preChristmas hype too early, but keep in mind that you can set your own agenda about when and how you want to celebrate this most glorious time of year.

Days leading up to Christmas can be jam-packed, as we prepare for what often seems like one event after another, but let’s not forget to savour the moments. De-stressing Christmas completely may be impossible but there are ways to make your holiday entertaining enjoyable. Here are a few strategies that may help you get the most jingle out of your December.

“Deck the Halls!” Sometimes the thought of hauling out the boxes filled with Christmas decorations intimating and exhausting. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, create a list that allows you to spread the work over a week or two. Plan on completing one job each day such as decorating the mantle, creating a centerpiece or doing some baking. Make it festive for the whole family and don’t forget to reward yourselves with a cup of eggnog or perhaps even a hot rum toddy! “Now bring us some figgy pudding!”

We tend to do more entertaining over the Christmas season than at any other time

of year, so it’s always good to think of ways of streamlining the labour involved. Instead of preparing an entire meal for your guests, consider organizing a potluck. You could even provide your guests with a suggested recipe, particularly if you want to coordinate dishes. If you’d rather not do a meal in your home, try organizing an event around one of Christmas offerings around town. Check the newspaper or look online for events taking place during the Christmas season: plays, concerts, parades, Christmas light tours, etc. Plan on meeting friends at the venue and then invite them over for drinks, appetizers and desserts after the event. If you don’t have time to prepare food, order a cheese or appetizer tray or

a dessert platter from a local deli or bakery. Bring out the drinks and enjoy great conversation brought on by the euphoria of your Christmas outing.

Organize a cookie exchange party. This is a great way to stock up on Christmas baking while enjoying the company of good friends. Invite 4-8 friends to join in on your cookie exchange. Each guest bakes one type of cookie and brings a dozen cookies for each invited guest. In addition, ask them to bring an extra half dozen for the party. Put on the coffee and tea and enjoy sampling the festive cookie treats. Everyone will be thrilled to be taking home a nice variety of baked goods for their Christmas cookie platter!

sn’t it funny how our mind almost always associates vacation time with going away? I can’t even count the number of times I have said, “I need to get away”. However, most of us really don’t have the time, and I realized a mind shift was in order; teaching myself that get away doesn’t have to mean getaway. So, I organized a staycation, packed an overnight bag, and with my husband in happy tow, took the 4.8 kilometre journey from my house to The Magnolia Hotel & Spa on Courtney Street in downtown Victoria.

The Magnolia Hotel & Spa was recently named the #4 hotel in Canada in the Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, and recognized as one of the top 25 romantic hotels in Canada by TripAdvisor 2015 Travellers’ Choice Awards. Located just one block from everything – the inner harbour, restaurants, shops, nightlife, and museums – The Magnolia Hotel & Spa truly is at the heart of our lovely city.

I personally love the charming lobby, with its European bijoux ambiance and grand piano. You never feel rush or herded in this space – something I dislike about check-in areas at large, busy hotels.

THE MAGNOLIA HOTEL & SPA Our Diamond guest suite was so pretty! Plush fabrics, an elegant carpet pattern and raw silk wall treatments were just some of the things I loved about this recently renovated room. Ten foot ceilings made our suite seem even more spacious, and the massive windows to the world were stunning. The room also featured a cozy gas fireplace and high end bed linens. Steve and I were experiencing the Romancing Victoria package, and we were thrilled to be greeted with Prosecco, chocolate truffles and Saltspring Soapworks bubble bath. Speaking of bubbles, the spa inspired bathroom was comfortably modern with a large soaker tub and separate glass shower. The fluffy robes and slippers were a really nice touch.

From our seventh floor suite; the spectacular views of this city at night were wonderful. I think we could have sat in front of the window for hours, but the city was calling so we donned our walking shoes and hit the streets. We walked around the city like tourists, choosing to combine two of the hotel’s signature Curated Trails - Discover Victoria Trail and Tapa Trail. We walked historic streets, discovered places we didn’t know existed, and dined on small plate delicacies along the way.
