VICTORIA VIBE

WITH DANA HUTCHINGS

S

ometimes when I go downtown to do errands I get completely dolled up. Yes, I’ll admit most of the time it’s jeans or yoga pants with unwashed hair and unmade-up face hidden under a hat.

But sometimes I need do the full on ‘Glamour Dana.’ Curl my hair, gingerly apply lip gloss, pink up my cheeks, put on a nice dress and even the torture device known as nylons. I do this to remember. Remember the then and now.

MY HISTORY IS HERE. MY ROOTS ARE HERE. T H I S C I T Y I S A R E C O R D O F M Y F A M I LY.

There is one building I pass as I walk, one that I always stop at, look up, smile and admire. THE BANK OF MONTREAL BUILDING ON THE C O R N E R O F YAT E S S T R E E T A N D D O U G L A S STREET. I do this because I know this is one spot that my parents, my grandparents, my great grandparents and my great-great grandparents have passed by. I wonder if they looked up and admired our city. One thing I know is that some of them looked up and smiled or in my great grandfather’s case, looked up and looked stoic. First a little bit about the building itself. It was designed by the prominent Victoria Architect Francis Rattenbury in 1907. Rattenbury also built the Provincial Parliament Buildings and many others. The building was originally home to the Merchant’s Bank of Canada but was taken over by the Bank of Montreal in 1922.

By the late 1930s, the intersection of Yates and Douglas outside the grand Beaux-Arts style building, had earned the nickname ‘Pusser’s Corner.’ Pusser is Navy slang for the purser, or the officer who handled the money on the ship. The reason it was called that? Sailors would hang out at the corner in their dress uniforms. Maybe not surprisingly that would attract attention from young women, many of whom would often dress up themselves, just to walk by the handsome young sailors.

A photographer soon realized he could make money taking candid shots of people as they proudly walked the corner. That was the beginning of what my Grandmother called ‘Candid Camera.’ The photographer would snap a picture, give you a ticket to go to his studio and buy the photo, printed as a postcard. That’s the reason I know my great grandfather looked stoic and that’s why I have great photos of generations of my family.

One of my favourites is of my grandmother, Florence, and a friend (pictured right), looking very stylish, laughing as they walk by. Now I think about these amazing photographs, they are memories of a forgotten time; momentos that are irreplaceable. DANA HUTCHINGS is a very proud Victorian whose family has been in Victoria five generations, longer than the city has been in existence. Always a journalist, Dana recently began a new career path as Director of Advancement and Communications at Power to Be Adventure Therapy.

16

Now we live in the age of selfies. I confess I am guilty of taking a selfie...or ten. Working the angles, working the light. That is how this generation captures memories. However, looking at these old wonderful photographs, I can’t help but think, in some ways we take the visual medium for granted. These pictures are candid moments of a bygone era, when taking photographs was a big deal. They captured not only the people who lived here, but our city.

OH HOW IT HAS CHANGED! I often think about my great grandfather (pictured above) and wonder, would he recognize Victoria now? The Victoria he knew was far different. Some of the buildings, the iconic landmarks are still there, but times have changed. Victoria was incorporated in 1862, flash forward to 2016.

As we start a new year, I can’t help but think about these streets, they have history. So now as I slip into my heels, heading downtown to run some errands, I remember how far we have come, how much we have grown as a city and I think about the future. Maybe my descendants will look at my selfies or stand on the corner of Yates and Douglas, look up and smile too.

THE HOUSE THAT

SAMBUILT Reimagining Wenman Cottage

I

am a big fan of preserving character properties; those that have historical significance to our community. However, it is true that sometimes new things are just better than what was there before, and that is true for the house that Sambuilt.

In 1911, a wooden framed cottage was built by the Wenman family on a gorgeous elevated parcel of land in Gordon Head; an area that afforded peace, tranquility and ocean views. Today, 105 years later, a stunning West Coast home has taken its spot on this very same parcel of land, built to pay respect to the lay of the land and continue the tradition of peace, tranquility and a new generation of family living.

Sambuilt was founded in Victoria in 2000 as a bespoke, frame-to-finish custom building company. Owner/builder Grant Parbery, originally from Australia (and who recently became a proud Canadian citizen), has more than thirty years building experience. Anyone that has done business with Grant knows that his success hinges on his ability to communicate, collaborate and creatively craft – all of which he does with excellence. “I have a committed, loyal crew and have established long term relationships with some of Victoria’s finest subcontractors. As a builder, I pride myself as a hands-on owner to assure my clients get the quality they deserve.” Married to a Canadian, Grant considers the West Coast to be his home, and his Victoria based company was named after his son, Sam.

22

This was not a house that Sambuilt was building for a client; this was a home that Grant Parbery was building for his family. He and his wife, Patrice Newman, purchased the parcel of land because of the country-like ambiance of the street, the heritage of the neighbourhood and the vision they had for building their dream home. The home design needed to span many stages and suit many purposes. It needed to work for the family now, for their empty nester stage in the future, and it needed to accommodate an office and their active Australian cattle dog named Ollie.

Designed by Canadian born, California based architect Roderick K. Britton, Parbery and Newman knew exactly what they wanted - a West Coast contemporary home with an open floor plan and copious amounts of natural light. For this family, the kitchen truly is the heart of the home, and having visited their previous residence, Britton understood his clients’ living styles and how to incorporate their requirements into the home’s design. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Sambuilt home without the Aussie touch, and Grant’s Australian heritage is woven into the West Coast design by way of building materials traditionally used in Australia, the wire railing system on the staircase and the inverted soffits.

SUS TAINABLE MATERIALS A N D E N E R GY C O N S E R VAT I O N M E T H O D S WERE IMPORTANT

As the build began, the sloping lot presented challenges logistically as did the orientation of a house design with five sides. The lot is fairly large, about a half-acre in size, and Parbery insisted great care was taken not only to maintain their privacy, but to ensure they did not obstruct their neighbours’ views. From start to finish, the build took one year to complete, as Parbery juggled other client projects as well as his own. Douglas fir and cedar woods were used extensively in the finishes and a metal roof captures water that is diverted and stored in an underground system, and used for watering during the summer months. These features, as well as the magnificent and massive exposed beam frames, present outside and inside the house set the tone for what lies beneath – a space that was carefully curated using sustainable materials and methods, and that looks right at home on its heritage lot. The house that Sambuilt is this family’s 4,000 square foot dream home that includes four bedrooms, four bathrooms, office, recreation room, laundry, utility area and a large open plan main living/kitchen/dining space.

Newman didn’t sit idly by either. She is responsible for the interior design and décor of the entire home. Additionally, most of the original artwork in the home is hers, and Newman custom made many of the homey touches in the house, including the creamy couture drapery in the master bedroom.

Q&A

WITH GRANT PARBERY OWNER/BUILDER, SAMBUILT

A H V How did Sambuilt’s mission influence this project? G P Energy conservation, the use of sustainable and reclaimed building materials was important to us; tasks that we achieved successfully in this build.

A H V Was this a hands-on project for you?

G P As an owner/builder, along with my crew with

special mention to Kevin Wilson, we undertook many of the facets of this build including tree removal, form work, drainage, framing, concrete slab work, electrical, insulation, drywall, soffits, siding and the timber framed entryway, to name just a few. It truly was a hands-on job.

A H V What are your favourite aspects of this home?

G P The architectural design still wows us! The

high ceilings, the abundance of natural light and the comfortable feel of this home are intoxicating. This home is such a comfortable place to be. We didn’t just build it, we own it. We live in it every day. No matter where we travel, we are always so thrilled to come home to beautiful Vancouver Island, and our wonderful home.

Outside is equally impressive. The expansive wraparound deck is an ideal entertaining space, or just a quiet place to relax and take in the views. The house is set far enough off the street to afford privacy, as does the separate garage/ workshop at the front of the property. A M I D S U M M E R W E S T C OA S T DAY D R E A M

Parbery and Newman did an exemplary job bridging modern and heritage, Canadian and Australian design aesthetics, family living with the need for private space. This beautiful West Coast home is now building new memories and creating its own story on Wenman Drive. The past, the present and the future‌ they all come together here.

TRAVEL CLOSE TO HOME BIG WHITE SKI RESORT

BY: TRACEY DRAKE

U

nless you call a few feeble romps on a bunny hill skiing, I don’t ski. And yet, one of my best mini vacations in recent times happened on the slopes at Big White Ski Resort. Located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, on the west side of the Rocky Mountains, Big White is this perfect little village nestled in fluffy snow, seemingly on top of the world, with five-star ski-in/ski-out accommodation and world class dining.

WHO KNEW SKIING (OR SLOPING IN MY CASE) COULD BE SO CIVILIZED? I found myself thoroughly enjoying this long weekend on this wonderful mountain. The vistas, the snow and the friendly energy of this place made it perfect.

Looking around at all the happy faces, on and off the ski runs, it occurred to me that this is the ideal destination for a family, especially if you have a mix of skiers, snowboarders and non-skiing lodge dwellers. Big White has won many industry awards over the years, and is consistently ranked one of the best family ski destinations in the world, and is Canada’s favourite family ski resort.

IT JUST MAKES SENSE.

Aside from 118 ski runs set on 2,765 acres of prime landscape, Big White offers family programming every day, Tot Town Daycare, (Ski Canada Magazine’s “Best Place to be Abandoned by Your Parents”) and the onsite Happy Valley Adventure Centre which includes the Big White Tube Park for all ages, challenging ice climbing tower, dog sled tours, kids’ snowmobiles, sleigh rides, snowshoe tours, and a massive ice rink.

GROWNUP TIME IS NOT FORGOTTEN HERE EITHER.

30

How about a private snow limo that takes you up on the mountain or a romantic date night that includes dinner and a sleigh ride? Speaking of food, there are eighteen dining options on the mountain. Don’t expect average ski food at Big White. From quick bites to fine dining, everything is here and it is done well. I was delighted by the variety of eateries, including a grocery store to stock up and prepare meals in your private accommodation.

Hotel rooms are only the beginning of the lodging story at Big White Ski Resort. From inns and full-service hotels right in the heart of the village, to peaceful cabins, family sized townhouses and luxury chalets, guests on Big White are spoiled for choice. We stayed at Sundance Resort, and chose a cozy 1-bedroom condo style suite with full kitchen and fireplace. The resort is located just above the Bullet Express near the village centre, allowing for excellent ski-in/ski-out access. I loved the outdoor heated pool and hot tub; a surreal winter swim experience when it’s -8 and snowing outside. Getting there is so much quicker than it used to be. Pacific Coastal Airlines now flies Victoria to Kelowna direct, and the Big White shuttle meets you at the airport. You can be on the slopes in no time at all, perfect for a long weekend getaway! 2016 package includes 4-nights, 4 days, with flights, hotel, lift tickets and airport shuttles from just $499 per person. Check out bigwhite.com for details.

This is the way to vacation close to home. Big White is a good choice for islander couples and families craving a new mountain experience. I am so glad I stepped out of my non-skiing comfort zone and went to Big White. It is amazing how good everything looks, tastes and feels in the crisp of winter. I even took a ski lesson. More on that later.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN. LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES.

This should take five to ten minutes. • Add three heaping teaspoons of Garam Masala and stir in well, allowing it to slightly brown and stick on bottom of pan.

• Quickly add in two finely chopped juicy ripe tomatoes - if good tomatoes are not available, use canned or add some a little water to fresh tomatoes to create liquid. • Stir the base of the pan to deglaze with a wooden spoon and turn down to low.

• Squeeze in a large chunk of ginger that has been frozen and defrosted or grate in two teaspoons frozen or fresh ginger. Add sliced garlic and prawns, turn the heat up and sauté until they start to brown. Add in the coconut milk and stir well. Allow the prawns to cook for five minutes and then gently stir in the cilantro, potatoes, jaggery gor and salt. • Adjust seasoning with lime juice and more salt, if required.

CONNOR STEFANISON WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR RISING STAR PORTFOLIO AWARD - 2015

I

BY: EMILY DOBBY

n December, I attended the opening of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 at the Royal BC Museum (exhibit on now until April 4, 2016). Presented by the Natural History Museum, London and now in its 51st year, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 showcases 100 staggeringly beautiful images in huge backlit displays and each image is selected from a field of 42,000 international entries in 20 categories.

I was able to sneak in a chat with BC photographer and winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 - Rising Star Portfolio Award, Connor Stefanison during the opening. Connor graciously answered some questions while we walked around the exhibit taking in the impressive photographs.

A graduate of Simon Fraser University and a self-taught photographer since 2008, Burnaby BC native Connor won this same award for the first time in 2013. His Rising Star Portfolio Award winning six-image entry includes “Night of the Mountain Goats”, a spectacular image of a mountain goat herd resting and grazing against a twinkling blanket of stars; a stunning photograph taken by Stefanison after camping on a rocky mountain ledge for three days and nights. Stefanison is an avid mountain biker and loves hunting, fishing and camping. His passion is shooting stories - and that is what he is focusing on these days. One of my favourite images from the exhibit is “A Black Bear Looks In”. Connor had arranged a night shoot, setting up a camera trap and leaving a tiny piece of meat as bait for the skunks he wished to photograph. In the morning, he discovered bear droppings on the track leading to his equipment and was worried that his equipment was damaged. He was surprised to find a stunning image of a glossy black bear looking directly into the camera. Bears are highly intelligent and curious animals as well as opportunist scavengers! What follows is a snippet of our conversation...

36

“A BLACK BEAR LOOKS IN” Connor Stefanison

“RAVEN STRUT” Connor Stefanison

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAMERA? My first camera was a Canon Rebel XTI. It was the family camera, but I soon took it over once I became interested in photography. I still use the XTI for camera trap photography; in fact my black bear photo in the exhibition was taken with it. My interest in photography first came from mountain biking. I used to mountain bike every day, and my friends and I would always take photos of each other riding. Soon after, I joined a camera club with my friend and his dad. The club had many nature photographers and I soon switched to nature photography. Before this I spent much of my time in the outdoors, so I already knew of so many great places to photograph wildlife and landscapes.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING SHOOT TO DATE?

I’ve taken many challenging photos over the years, and it’s tough to decide on which was the most challenging. In my Wildlife Photographer Of the Year portfolio this year, the most challenging image was my American Dipper photo (Creekside Nursery). Setting up all my equipment on the slippery rock wall surface in a river, while trying to minimize my impact on the birds was a real test. Not to mention capturing a sharp image of the quick action that was happening. I’m very lucky to have achieved the image without preventing any feedings and without having any of my gear fall into the river!

WHERE IS YOUR PREFERRED LOCATION IN THE WORLD TO SHOOT?

The British Columbia interior is one of my favourite places to photograph. Anywhere from Merritt to Williams Lake during the late spring and early summer. I spend a lot of time in that region photographing wildlife on the area’s many lakes. I’ve been fishing the interior lakes my entire life. Once I began photography, I already knew of so many great locations for wildlife photography up there. Now, many years later, a friend and I just offered our first photography workshop for Common Loons and other wildlife in the interior this coming summer! I’ve been able to do nature photography in various places in Europe, Central America, and North America, but my favourite location is British Columbia. BC is such a large province that you can always find something interesting to photograph. I’d say it’s definitely one of the best places on earth for nature/wildlife photography.

WHAT PHOTOGRAPH ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

One of my favourite photos is the one in this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit of the Mountain Goat herd resting and grazing at night. I envisioned an image like this before setting out, but had no idea if it would be possible. The toughest part of making this image was composing it. There was no moonlight and I wasn’t using my headlamp, so a lot of guessed compositions and test shots were involved. I spent a few nights attempting this shot, and this one ended up being one of the early photos. I only had a couple chances for this scene since the goat didn’t stay bedded down for long, and the 25 second exposure offered a lot to go wrong. I like the peaceful feeling and atmosphere of this photo. I hope to get back to this area of southeastern BC soon!

“SPENDING TIME WITH THE GOATS AT NIGHT WAS ONE OF THE MORE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES I’VE EVER HAD.” - Connor Stefanison

“CREEKSIDE NURSERY” Connor Stefanison

WHAT KIND OF WORKSHOPS ARE YOU LEADING? Right now, I’m leading both private and group events. They range from a single day exploring Vancouver’s best bird areas, to spending a week in a luxurious lakeside bed & breakfast with a group of other nature photographers. All the workshops are based heavily on instruction, rather than me just acting as a tour guide.

WHAT WAS YOUR IMPRESSION OF THE WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2015 EXHIBIT?

The exhibit was very good this year. I would say that this is overall one of the best years in the contest. WPY is a very important event, not just for the recognition of photographers, but also for bringing attention to conservation issues. The exhibit is seen by an incredible amount of people every year. What makes WPY such a well-received channel, is the quality and diversity of amazing images. Every year I’m blown away by the progression of images, and I’m very excited to see what’s in store for future years. Stefanison’s award winning photographs are on exhibit in Victoria now. Developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London, The Wildlife Photographer of the Year is a ‘must experience’ exhibit at Royal BC Museum until April 4, 2016. The exhibit features 100 large-scale, back-lit photographs that include some of the world’s most respected nature photographers and wildlife experts. From the adorable to the elegant, awardwinning images tell astonishing stories of our natural world while pushing the boundaries of technical skill.

Stefanison is joined by another Canadian photographer receiving top honours. Dr. Don Gutoski, of London, ON, was the competition’s overall winner for his photograph, A Tale Of Two Foxes (below).

NOVA SCOTIA

Canada’s East Coast Flavours

42

BY: STUART BROWN

I

recently expanded my travels exploring our vast and wonderfully diverse country, this time in Nova Scotia. Now, I can’t say that I visited the entire province; however, I was able to circumnavigate a fairly large portion of the province and was fascinated with the distinctiveness of each region. I find it so exciting to experience the unique changes in culture, historical background, local traditions and expressions that exist between the people that live so close together, while simultaneously recognizing some key similarities that these honest, dedicated, heart-warming, salt-of-theearth people typically share. I was so taken with the pleasurable sights and locations of Nova Scotia; following the scenic Lighthouse Route to Peggy’s Cove, through Mahone Bay, on to Lunenburg to see the Bluenose II and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, exploring the loyalist town of Shelburne, and the experiencing the culture and history of the Acadian people on French Shore. With all of these travels and sights, I had to keep reminding myself to focus on the culinary and local beverage opportunities that surrounded me.

I found my mind constantly wandering to thoughts like, “I could live here…and here…and there.”

The Ironworks Distillery in Lunenburg was my first opportunity to taste local, handcrafted liquids. Well known for their vodka made from Annapolis Valley apples as well as some pretty fine gin, rum, brandy, eau de vie and liqueurs, this micro-distillery was established in 2009 in what was the old blacksmith shop complete with coalfired forges. The tasting and tour at this distillery should not be missed!

Over the years, I’ve had wine colleagues from Nova Scotia tell me about the young, yet exuberant wineries existing in that province. In truth, I thought they were being more loyal than truthful about the wines being produced there, so I didn’t pay much attention. This was my opportunity to try the wines of Nova Scotia. The first winery I came across while travelling the south shore in the La Have River Valley was Petite Rivière Vineyards.

Although the views of rolling vineyards were magnificent from the beautiful winery tasting room, I was most impressed with the wines. They were well made in an honest, straight forward, true to Nova Scotia manner. The winery produces sparkling wines, whites, roses and reds that were mostly made with hybrid grapes varieties such as Leon Millot, L’Acadie Blanc, Seyval Blanc and Lucy Khulman as well as some vinifera grape types (the ones we are more used to seeing) Riesling and gewürztraminer. My gastronomic adventure took me into Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, where I stayed in Wolfville. This area is rich in agriculture and products made from the land. Just outside of town are several fantastic wineries including Benjamin Bridge, Luckett Vineyards, L’Acadie Vineyards and Domaine de Grand Pré.

“You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces - just good food from fresh ingredients.” - JULIA CHILD

It was interesting to see that the wineries collaborated in forming the appellation Tidal Bay. An appellation is a set of laws that produce a typical-type wine. Officially launched in 2012, Tidal Bay is a crisp, aromatic white wine displaying unique characteristics of the cool, Nova Scotia climate. It was inspired by the influence of the sea, given the proximity of the wineries to the sea. There are a few standards the individual wineries need to follow, but most importantly, the wine must demonstrate a distinctive taste profile of fresh, green fruit with lively acidity and a low alcohol, mineral clean finish. The Tidal bay wines are a true delight to any Nova Scotia day. Tidal Bay is produced by most Nova Scotia wineries and pairs wonderfully with the local seafood dishes. My visit to Benjamin Bridge was truly eye opening. Their collection of handcrafted fine wines, including their world class Méthode Classique sparkling wines, the immensely popular Nova 7, and their

limited edition luxury wines have raised the profile of Nova Scotia wines both in Canada and internationally. I look forward to seeing more world class wines from Benjamin Bridge in the years to come.

Just outside of Wolfville, I found a piece of heaven at Domaine de Grand Pré. Founded by Hanspeter Stutz, a leading member of the local food, wine, tourism and culture associations, this “old world” property is a must see when visiting the region. When you visit, include a tour of the estate vineyards, a wine tasting, as well as a spectacular on-site dining experience at Le Caveau Restaurant.

At Domaine de Grand Pré, I was fortunate enough to meet with Chef Michael Howell and Lia Rinaldo who both co-direct the local festival, Devour! The Food Film Festival. Devour is a five-day extravaganza in the world of culinary cinema, tastings, wine tours, industry sessions and gala dinners featuring renowned chefs. The Devour motto is Eat It Up! After hearing about the festival, I started planning my next trip to Nova Scotia for November. I plan on taking in all the festival food, film and fun while further investigating more of the fine wines Nova Scotia has to offer. I look forward to seeing you there!

CURATING DREAMS 2016 INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR A

Whimsical Boudoir BY: JANE CROSS

F

inally! A trend for 2016 that blends current colour palettes and a design aesthetic just for us girls... Softness, glamour and all things girly have once again found their way back into the bedroom. What does this mean for your boudoir in 2016? It means that almost anything goes; if you love it, show it off. It is also the perfect time to curate a room design that incorporates new and vintage items, soft and hard furnishings, muted tones and refined metallics.

COLOURS are exciting this year too. Pantone chose two colours as the 2016 colours of the year - Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) and Serenity (Pantone 15-3919). Both colours are soft, sublte and elegant. They work really nicely with muted metallics like aged silver and burnished gold, as well as white, grey and taupe tones.

LAYERS are once again playing a big role in dressing the perfect bedroom. After all, aside from looking fantastic, layers add to the coziness of our West Coast homes and serve as functional pieces to wrap, cuddle and snuggle up to on dreary days. This year, instead of wool throws and cotton pillows, think about adding French lace, faux fur and silk into the mix.

FLOORS and ceilings are also an important part of the story. Bare floors are trending again in 2016, especially those in rich hewn woods or interesting stone. However, cold floors are not always practical in our climate, so search for area carpets that are low pile and made of natural fibres. Looking up, find the perfect light fixture that’s a good fit for your personality. Whether a glam chandelier or a sleek modern ceiling mount, choose a light that gives your new room a soft moody ambiance. If you need more light for reading, add bedside table lamps.

DESIGN WITH JENNY MARTIN

SMART STORAGE

BY: JENNY MARTIN | INTERIOR DESIGNER

I RECENTLY GOT A CALL FROM A CLIENT WORRIED THAT HIS FAMILY HAD OUTGROWN HIS CHARMING LITTLE OAK BAY CHARACTER HOME. THEY LOVE THEIR NEIGHBOURHOOD, THEIR NEIGHBOURS AND HAVE NO DESIRE TO MOVE, BUT THEIR HOUSE JUST WASN’T FUNCTIONING FOR THEIR FAMILY. SO, I WENT TO TAKE A LOOK.

56

When I arrived at the front door, I was greeted by twenty little pairs of shoes, and coats hung over the banister. As I stepped over toys and craft supplies to assess the rest of the house, I couldn’t help but think he was right… it was time to move.

But as we continued to walk through the house it was clear that a few things had to happen – and this is what I envisioned:

The house lacked built-ins of any kind. A custom built-in next to the fireplace would be a great place to store overflow items and create an area to display collectibles. The dining room was empty aside from the table, so adding a built-in desk along one wall to act as homework station for the two small kids, with ample storage for all of their craft and art supplies, would be a functional solution. We’ve been including ‘homework stations’ in lots of our projects lately; they can include lower and upper storage or just lower, and can be as beautiful as they are functional.

The other major problem is that this house had no front hall closet and no other point of entry aside from the front foyer. The powder room, across from the front door, housed the family laundry and a shallow closet was filled with cleaning supplies. Sometimes a more major programming solution needs to be explored; in this case a

second entrance through the basement would be the best solution. I also planned a laundry/ mud room with cubbies for each of the kids that included shoe storage, lots of counter space and upper storage for laundry and cleaning supplies. This would now be the main point of entry for the kids, so all of the shoes, book bags, and outdoor toys would filter into the house on this level, rather than through the front door. Also, by removing the laundry machines from the front door we could create a proper front hall closet. Another area that can be utilized is dead attic space, recessed banks of drawers or custom shoe shelves are another way to create additional closet space in bedrooms. If this problem sounds familiar, and you are finding that your house rarely feels neat and tidy, it probably means that you don’t have dedicated places for everything to go. Looking for ways to create creative storage is a great way to take the pressure off a full house.

JENNY’S STORAGE SECRETS • Build shoe drawers into stair risers • Use baskets to condense shelf clutter • Custom drawer inserts for hair tools will keep a bathroom tidy • Shallow drawers can be great for keeping things organized • Recess cabinets into dead attic space for infrequently used storage • Medicine cabinets or over-the-toilet storage can look pretty and create additional storage

AH

WHERE TO SHOP Used.ca is a great place to hunt for vintage baskets, recycled lockers and storage cubbies. Ikea offers affordable storage options that, with a little tweaking can look built-in, and most can be ordered on their website at ikea.ca and delivered to your home.

A CONVERSATION WITH

RASHIDA MALIK BY: TRACEY DRAKE

THIS YEAR, ATHOME VICTORIA DECIDED TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT LOCAL PROFESSIONALS THAT DO BUSINESS DIFFERENTLY IN OUR COMMUNITY – SHOWCASING THOSE THAT ARE NOT “BUSINESS AS USUAL”. IN THIS SEGMENT, I SAT DOWN WITH REALTOR RASHIDA MALIK.

R

ashida Malik is a multifaceted award winning realtor with Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, offering clients her proven expertise, not just in real estate but finance, property development and home staging. In October 2015 and again in December 2015, Rashida Malik was one of Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty’s Top 25 Producers.

A Victoria resident for more than 22 years, Rashida was firmly planted in her very successful career as a Personal Banker, helping clients make sound investment decisions and assisted them through the often difficult process. Along the way, Rashida built her own investment property portfolio, furthering her knowledge of the local real estate market. With a passion for interior design, Rashida looked to purchase properties that required a deft hand and a creative eye to realize their full potential. “I am privileged to own The Laurels, a 16-suite Rockland character mansion of historic importance. Purchasing the property in a state of disrepair, my husband and I have worked hard - acting as renovator, designer and decorator - in an ongoing effort to restore this magnificent property to its former glory. It continues to be a labour of love.”

IthereBELIEVE is no such thing

as a closed door. You just need to OWN THE RIGHT KEY. – RASHIDA MALIK

It is so unique to find a realtor who can help a home buyer or seller with so many different facets of the real estate process. Rashida often shows up at a client’s home armed with paint chips and colour wheels, offering guidance in the pre-sale tasks of touching up and staging their home, to realize the highest possible selling price. “I try to educate my clients no matter where they are on the property ladder. With my financial background, I look at their current needs, and can counsel them into discovering exactly what they are looking for in a property.”

With a love for finance, property development and design, it was only natural that Rashida would find her way to the world of real estate. She left the banking industry to become a realtor in Victoria, and almost twenty years later, has never regretted the career change. “I take tremendous pride in guiding my clients through the process, whether they are a first time home buyer or sophisticated investor. My goal is, and always has been, to match the perfect property to the right homeowner. I stake my professional reputation on it every day.”

decisions and she knows real estate in Victoria, inside and out. When I asked Rashida about her approach to real estate, her response was candid, and in my opinion, rare. “To me, my main focus is not to get them to sign a contract quickly so I make a commission. I want my clients to stay with me long-term, and if that means they are not ready to buy now, I hope that I have helped them in the education of buying a property, and they will think of me when the time is right for them.”

Rashida works with a trusted network of insurance, mortgage and industry experts She is always connecting, learning and educating, utilizing modern technologies to best serve her clients. For more information, or to talk with Rashida, visit her new website at RashidaMalik.com

Rashida Malik is a mother and grandmother who leads by example, inspiring her children to lead their lives with passion and integrity. She loves living and doing business in Victoria. “We are lucky to live in such a diverse city; a community that serves every person’s home needs, a city that is beautiful with great weather, good schools and less traffic.”

Rashida has strong ties to the Muslim and Pakistani community of Victoria. Her Islamic faith is a constant strength that guides her personally and professionally. “This country, and indeed this city, has allowed me to be a true Muslim without cultural barriers.” Rashida worked alongside Naz Rayani on the purchase and rezoning of the old Bank of Montreal building in Esquimalt into a Jamatkhana for the Victoria Ismaili Muslim community and is committed to the unique needs of newly arrived immigrant families. An active member of BCMA, Rashida also lends her time and expertise to a wide range of interfaith community projects. According to a January 2016 press release, issued by the Victoria Real Estate Board, the market is strong. “We wrapped up 2015 with numbers we haven’t seen since 2007”, stated VREB President Guy Crozier. “This past year, we saw 8,295 transactions on MLS, an increase of 23.8% from last year.” Rashida is poised to consistently be a top producer again in 2016. During my conversations with Rashida Malik, it became very clear that although her viewpoints stemmed from extensive experience, her perspectives and concern for her clients are always very personal. She empowers clients to make the best

CREATING AN ART GALLERY IN YOUR HOME

62

P

BY: ELIZABETH DEAN

uzzled about how to hang your pictures, paintings and other wall art objects for maximum impact and attractiveness in your home? While choices in styles and types of art vary widely, the “rules” for hanging them are few and sensible. If you know the rules for displaying art at the right height and in the correct manner, your home can look like a chic art gallery and have a definitive interior decorator feel with very little effort! Here are a few tips to get you started:

T H E E Y E S H AV E I T Hang art at eye level for best visibility and greatest impact. Whose eye level, you ask? Yours, of course! While you will undoubtedly entertain guests who are tall and short, you will be spending more time in your rooms than they will, so hang art where your eyes can most easily take it in. If you happen to be a particularly short or tall person and you choose to hang your art for the enjoyment of others, use a height of 5’6”. In private homes, “eye level” is generally considered to be judged from a seated position; in public halls and reception areas where people stand more than they sit, “eye level” is assessed while standing.

SEVER AL SMALLS CAN EQUAL ONE BIG If you don’t have a huge oil painting, that doesn’t mean you can’t make art a focal point of the room. Grouping several smaller pieces together to make an interesting arrangement often works better than one large piece of art. Arrangements do call for more planning. Plan a layout that pleases you by placing pictures and art objects on the floor, making sure that there is balance and proportion. Then get some paper—old paper bags do nicely —and cut it into sections the exact sizes of the frames you plan to hang. Use low tack masking tape and attach the paper to the wall in the layout you’ve chosen and reassess your choice. Move the papers around until you are completely happy. When you are ready, hang the art right over the paper guides and once hung, simply pull the paper out from underneath the framed art. WATC H S U R R O U N D I N G H E I G H T S Take nearby door and window heights into consideration. Hang pictures at or below them for best proportionate viewing. If your rooms have crown moulding near the ceiling, consider hanging pictures using chains or ribbons on hooks especially made to fit your moulding style. This is a lovely touch, particularly in older homes or a space that you want to add some character. PAY AT T E N T I O N TO T H E N U T S A N D B O LT S Hang heavy pictures and mirrors from wall studs, using two hangers to help keep them level. Use the correct hanger for the weight of the frame. For pictures hung on walls with frequently used doors, either wrap painter’s tape around the part of the picture wire that sits in the hook, or affix double-sided tape to the lower edge of the frame and press it into the wall when the picture is in place. Above all, selecting art and hanging it in your home should be a labour of love. When you choose art, prints or photographs that you cannot live without and enjoy looking at everyday; it will make the choice of where to display it that much easier. In most homes, the goal is to create an art gallery that is functional and aesthetically pleasing – there are no art curators that will be measuring to ensure you have adhered to gallery standards.

A L AY E R E D D E S I G N E R T W I S T ON CLASSIC BLUE AND WHITE

B

lue and white décor is as popular as ever. Although it would be fine to tell readers how to get this look at home, I thought it might be more fun to show you how it’s done right. I reached out to an award winning interior designer whose work has been featured on HGTV, and in multiple highend publications including New York Living and The Robb Report. Designer Catherine Cleare (cleareinteriors.com) was happy to share a master bedroom project that is an exceptional example of layering colour and pattern.

64

BLUE

is the only colour which maintains its own character in all its tones... it will always stay blue. – RAOUL DUFY, FRENCH PAINTER

Cleare says the concept always starts with pencil and paper. “It starts with sketches because you need a vision. That’s because what you first see when you enter a room begins with white walls - an interior designer’s blank canvas.” You would never guess from the feel of the room, but this was a small space. Fortunately, with a great wall plan and lots of natural light, adding impact through statement pieces, colour, pattern and texture was an option that worked perfectly.

don’t get lost in the space either. The Schumacher metal framed chairs below the window are at once commanding and elegant. The J.Pocker fish prints seem to tie it all together in a neat little blue and white package.

The indigo blue walls are skillfully hand painted using an Ikat pattern and create the ideal backdrop for the white furniture, patterned formal drapes and multiple other fabrics choices. The trellis blue and white carpet acts as the perfect foundation for the custom bed, nightstand and desk, sitting proudly against the darker wooden floors beneath.

Cleare used a lot of restraint in staying true to her blue and white vision, and the designer details of this room are what make it exceptional. The crystal ball lamps and the Lucite bench legs never compete with the custom fabrics, but

TRAVELLING EDITOR

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME?

BY: TRACEY DRAKE | THE TRAVELLING EDITOR

I

always want to go home. No matter where I travel to, when the trip comes to a close, I am excited to come back home. I never thought, in all my travels, that I would find a place from which I truly never wanted to leave. Then I visited Little Cayman Island and experienced Little Cayman Beach Resort.

Just a short airplane ride from Grand Cayman Island lands you squarely in paradise. The airport is a small, modest, oneroom building (that also doubles as the fire station) with a humorous wood sign hanging outside (Terminal A Gate #1) that offers a glimpse into the island’s good nature and playful approach to living. Little Cayman Beach Resort is a three-minute shuttle from the airport and at once you know that you have arrived somewhere very special. The entire resort, both its buildings and its staff, are colourful and welcoming. The accommodation and service are first class, and yet they have expertly curated the perfect blend of luxury and island

charm. Very large iguanas lay sunbathing on the wooden narrow boardwalks that meander through the property, eventually leading to oceanfront guest suites. My room was lovely, modern and spacious. The front patio offered shady respite with unobstructed water views and the sound of crashing reef waves in the distance.

The open air bar that hugs up against the swimming pool offers up intoxicating island rum punch and delicious fish tacos. The interior restaurant serves a home-style breakfast buffet. This is a place for living adventurously or doing nothing at all. I chose the latter. Little Cayman Beach Resort is a popular spot for diving enthusiasts; it seemed to be on the top of everyone’s to-do list. Everyone but me. Each morning, after breakfast, all the divers would head off to play in deep tropical waters. The resort would get very quiet and it was wonderful.

LITTLE CAYMAN BEACH RESORT

Beachfront hammocks are plentiful on the pure white sand beach, as are secluded lounge chairs to cuddle up with a good book and a long cool drink. If you feel like exerting a little energy, there is a cute little store on site that sells beachwear and souvenirs, and the resort has bikes available for exploring Little Cayman Island, which is just ten miles long and one mile wide. With a population of less than 170 people, Little Cayman is a rare paradise of beaches, lagoons and foliage. I bought a water bottle in Cayman, as a gift for my husband, that reads, “Quit your job, buy a ticket, get a tan, fall in love, never return.” I was so tempted.

GOOD TO KNOW: •

SCUBA DIVING Serious divers have been flocking to Little Cayman ever since Jacques Cousteau declared it one of the top three diving sites in the world. Little Cayman Beach Resort offers diving excursions onsite. The resort is group and family friendly with meals included in your rate, and dive packages offered.

YOUR OWN PRIVATE ISLAND Yes, this is a scuba divers paradise. BUT if you’re not a diver, this is the perfect vacation spot to get away from it all. Divers are gone all day and you have the resort (and what feels like the entire island) to yourself.

GETTING HERE Little Cayman Island is a 35-minute commuter plane ride from Grand Cayman Island. It is inexpensive and an easy jaunt over scenic waters below.

PACKING Bathing suit, sandals, shorts, sunblock, and a good book is all you need. No fancy dress or technology required here.

THE WINE LIST BY: STUART BROWN | WINE EXPERT

Vigneti Zanatta Estate Winery

Q

uite often when I am hosting wine tastings, guests ask me what my favourite wines are. Most of the time my answer starts with a pause and a pondering, “Hmmmm”. One would think that after being asked this question so often, one would have a scripted answer; and I still stumble. Usually I start proclaiming my love for Old World wines only to begin justifying some darn good New World examples that are close to my heart. At this point, the guest often tries to help by questioning my interest in one specific grape. My initial relief quickly evolves to further internal argument of how I love this grape and adore that grape from a specific region.

The real answer is that I love so many wines, for so many reasons and in so many circumstances. To choose one to stand out above all else is unrealistic and does not truly honour the great ones. There is an answer that resonates the best with me: I love wines that have many characteristics coming together to create life. Great wine is alive and consists of so many dimensions to its being that are constantly changing and evolving. If you haven’t had that wine yet, then I suggest that you keep trying new and different wines.

One winery exemplifying true farm life on Vancouver Island is Vigneti Zanatta in the Cowichan Valley. Founded on true Italian roots in the 1950’s, Dionisio (Dennis) Zanatta came to Canada and started planting grapevines on the dairy farm purchased in the Glenora region of the valley.

Today, only 25 acres of the 120 acres of farm are dedicated to grapes. The rest of the property remains in pasture, forest, hay fields and old fruit orchards.

The Zanatta journey continues today with Loretta Zanatta (Dennis’ daughter) and her husband, Jim Moody, leading the farm team to produce wines that represent the best of Vancouver Island from their own vines and in their own vision. The “farmer first” approach to respectfully and knowledgably work with the land rather than against it can be seen in all areas of production at Zanatta, and the love can be tasted in the wines. We can’t discuss Vigneti Zanatta without mentioning Vinoteca. Established in 1996, Vinoteca is the on-site restaurant and wine bar where Chef Fatima Da Silva has worked her craft of simplicity-of-style and symbiosis between farm and table for years. The result is seasonally and regionally-driven cuisine that compliments the wines wholeheartedly.

So don’t just stop quickly here – take the time to make your Vigneti Zanatta experience the best it can be – take in the views, enjoy a wine tasting, and finish with a sumptuous meal at Vinoteca (always make a reservation to ensure a full experience). You will find them at 5039 Marshall Road. This is out in the country, so be sure to check it on a map to ensure that you will not get lost on the way there!

ENTERTAIN WITH DOROTHY BY: DOROTHY HAWES

INGREDIENT POTLUCK PARTY “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” VINCENT VAN GOGH

W

ith the afterglow of holiday entertaining behind us, it’s fun to get back to casual entertaining, particularly the kind where you don’t have to do all the work! And what could be easier than a potluck dinner? How about a new twist on this idea? Introduce your friends to the concept of the ingredient potluck.

Potluck dinners have been around for quite some time and are a fantastic way to gather without one person taking on all of the preparation. An ingredient potluck is an innovative way to jazz up the traditional potluck dinner, by focusing on a single ingredient to inspire your guests. Once you have invited your guests, provide them with your suggested ingredient and ask them to be sure to include it in their portion of the meal, whether it is an appetizer, vegetable dish, main or dessert. Here are a few suggestions about how your ingredient potluck might play out...

Curry Ingredient Potluck Devilled eggs with curry Curried scallop cakes Curried pumpkin soup Curried quinoa salad with mango Shrimp red thai curry or beef curry Roasted vegetables with curried yoghurt dip Grilled curried mangoes with vanilla ice cream

Bare Essentials Lingerie Experience The Difference….

If you don’t want to be limited to one ingredient, go with a colour instead. A red ingredient potluck might include strawberries, cranberries or tomatoes in the appetizer and feature a variety of reds in the vegetable dishes. Perhaps a cranberry, tomato or raspberry sauce to accompany the main course, followed by red velvet cake for dessert. Choose any colour you like and let that be a springboard for inspiration. Give these important deails to your invited guests: • Total number of guests attending so they bring enough of their dish for everyone to try • The specific ingredient request • What part of the potluck they need to prepare (appetizer, soup, salad, main, vegetable dish, dessert, etc.)

No matter the ingredient, it’s all about the joy of gathering together, savouring wonderful food and nurturing friendships. Happy entertaining with your ingredient potluck!

ow in its 16th season, Hôtel de Glace de Québec holds a place in Canadian architecture. Each year for just a few months (January 4-March 28 this year) a magical ice resort opens for guests to enjoy. The theme is different each year and always spectacular. Pierre L’Heureux, artistic director of the Hôtel de Glace feels that this year’s theme will be unforgettable! “From frozen glaciers to rivers flowing underground, visitors are free to explore the banks and meander rivers that capture the imagination. Man and water join forces to take you on a voyage along imaginary rivers through a world of ice and snow, as you experience the Hôtel de Glace as a River.”
