H! I love fashion season and all that it represents. It is not simply a time when designers shift gears and parade their new collections down runways of the world. I also love this time of year because it kicks off the official season of “coccooning� - that time where it is a-okay to wrap and layer with relative ease and definitive style.

Gigi Hadid slayed it in 2016; earning her the coveted spot as our Fashion Issue cover model. And speaking of supermodels take a closer look at how they are ruling the fashion world [Model Citizens, page 17]. Finally, fashion columnist Jennifer Costanzo is taking a close look at the enduring trend of navy in all its fashion forms [Fashion Fix, page 42].

This is our annual Fashion Issue, and reaching 6.5 million readers worldwide means curating a magazine that speaks to all fashion style and sensibiities. I think the NICHE team nailed it!

This tall dark haired natural stunner is not only seen in the pages of NICHE, and on one of our past covers (Fashion Issue 2015), but seen everywhere in the fashion industry including looking stylish on-the-go. Cameras always seem to capture Kendall looking effortlessly put together in a structured coat, black or neutral attire, great booties and unique glasses paired with the hottest accessories.

OLIVIA PALERMO As a socialite, Palermo first came into the spotlight during the television series, The City. Since then she has grown her personal brand to new heights. Launching her modeling career in 2009, Palermo signed to Wilhelmina Models and has appeared on numerous magazine covers and in international campaigns. Palermo has a personally branded website which consist of travel, lifestyle and fashion blogs. It is probably of no surprise that we feature Palermo as a model citizen... in 2012 she was named “Best Dressed New Yorker� by the New York Post.

Slimming down the volume and turning up the vibrancy, Pucci Creative Director, Massimo Giorgetti embodies the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit with his fall collection. Pucci’s take on the coat features quilting in cobalt blue with a cinched waist belt and arm and neck cuffs. Iconic quilting and black and white contrasting colors, Karl Lagerfeld created a chic puffer coat with a flattering linear silhouette and sporty aesthetic. Is there anything better than a trend that you can literally sleep in? Designers are interpreting sleepwear into ready-to-wear fall essentials. Whether it is a sleep shirt turned day dress by Rochas, or a two piece casual lightweight suit from Etro, there is nothing snooze-worthy happening here. Narciso Rodriguez played with fall Earth tones and copper in the form of a slip-style dress and casual overcoat. This season designers put forth their best fall evening attire, with unique spins on classic silhouettes. Jeremy Scott continues to show his audience why he is the perfect fit for fashion house, Moschino. No one does fashionable humour quite like them. Dolce and Gabbana created a sequin evening dress in rose pink accessorizes with a bedazzled beret and peter-pan collar. Designers like Marchesa and Rodarte are taking their known-for design qualities to new heights.

IN THE NAVY

N

ot only is the color navy on trend this fall, it is also joined by the Navy inspired trend. For some seasons now we have seen army influence everywhere, from the catwalk to the street. However, this season, designers are turning toward a new military branch for inspiration: the Navy.

that people have reached for whenever the weather begins to change. It is not only a menswear staple but also a favorite on the womenswear runways. The peacoat, which had its beginnings within the military, first as a versatile piece of outerwear and later making its way to both the runways and streets.

One of the major shades for Fall/Winter 2016 according to Pantone Color Institute’s fashion color report is Navy Blue. Navy blue has been seen on the runways accompanied by Cobalt blue and Airy blue. The color of blue coincides with the Navy trend, especially prevalent at Tommy Hilfiger’s nautical themed Fall/Winter 2016 runway show. Tommy Hilfiger showed a range of naval officer style coats, worn with silk baby doll dresses in navy blue. Another runway show exhibiting the Navy trend was John Galliano where the same style maritime coats could be seen as well. At Balenciaga there was a juxtaposition seen between the different shades of blues from navy to cobalt as well as Altuzarra’s Fall 2016 runway show where the designer displayed unique color blocking. This shade of navy is not only the perfect color for a fall coat but also gives a unique twist to cocktail dresses, an alternative to that little black dress you have in your closet.

HISTORY of the peacoat is deeply rooted within the military and the Navy. The Dutch Navy first wore the peacoat during the nineteenth century. While the Dutch are credited for inventing the peacoat, it was the British Navy who can take the credit for its popularization. After the British began sporting the peacoat, it crossed the pond and showed up on the men of the American Navy. The reason the peacoat worked so well for the military and Navy was due to its durability. It could withstand rain, wind and cold temperatures, which were typically experienced out at sea. As well, the coats were form fitting and most of them were double breasted with a collar that could be buttoned all the way up the neck for added protection. Nearly all peacoats had either brass or plastic buttons with an image of an anchor imprinted on them.

The coat for Fall/Winter 2016 is the navy topper, whether it’s a cropped pea-coat or a Navy-inspired calf length coat, the nautical trend that was seen in the Pre-Fall collections gained even more strength on the Fall 2016 runways. The nautical trend was most seen on fresh takes on the classic jacket. Fashion designers from New York to London, and Milan to Paris looked to the traditional peacoat for inspiration not only in the style of coat but also in its traditional color, navy blue. The peacoat has been a piece of outerwear 42

The first peacoats, originally worn by military personnel are still in style as an option for the colder months of the year. The fit and construction of the jacket have changed and modernized making it an easy and fashionable go to option for layering in the cooler weather headed our way this fall and winter. If you already have that perfect peacoat but want to be on trend with the “It Color” and trend for Fall 2016, pieces to invest in are sailor pants, double breasted coats or nautical themed jewelry.

hat’s the one question I am asked the most? ‘What is in this season?’ I pause and stare blankly into their eyes as they wait on the edge of their proverbial seats and think, ‘Who cares?’. So, when did style become about following the dictates of prescribed lists? While magazines love their lists and admittedly are a jumping-off place to get your seasonal bearings, never before has the consumer had the ability and power to express themselves in an utterly individual way. In January of 2015, Gucci’s seemingly where-did-he-come-from creative director Alessandro Michele forever changed the way we not only looked at clothes and style, but, more importantly, looked at ourselves. His message was clear, ‘Don’t label me, I am an individual.’ There has been a fashion revolution since Signore Michele took the helm at Gucci and every other designer took notice. So whether you are wearing Gucci or are just inspired by his insouciant way of mixing things, the bigger message is more powerful than any magazine’s seasonal lists: Express yourself. Now, that’s fashion.

The collection is Renaissance arrives at Studio 54—I like to talk in more than one language. Fashion isn’t about going in just one direction; I think it’s very contemporary to have many different inspirations.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were born on June 13, 1986 in Sherman Oaks, California. Before the Olsen twins embarked on their fashion endeavors they were well known for their acting careers. Their acting debut as Michelle Tanner on Full House made the Olsen twins famous before they were even talking. Throughout their adolescent years, the twins continued acting in numerous films, eventually taking over and owning their own company Dualstar when they turned eighteen. Despite their similarities in appearance, they are not identical twins. However, their similar interest in the fashion industry led them to where they are today. As the Olsen twins matured, they expressed a greater interest in fashion rather than film and began conveying this love of fashion through their own personal styles. The Olsen twins soon became fashion icons, especially Mary-Kate with her signature “homeless� look which consisted of oversized sunglasses, boots, loose sweaters and flowing skirts, mixing high and low end pieces.

The Olsen twins love of fashion culminated in the launch of their luxury fashion house, The Row in 2006. The name of their line came from the fashionable Savile Row in London. The idea for the brand started as a personal project in 2005 when Ashley Olsen challenged herself to create a perfect t-shirt. As a good businesswoman, Ashley tested the top on a variety of women, ranging in all body shapes and ages to see how it fit and looked. By 2006, they had created their first seven-piece collection, which included this t-shirt. Barneys New York bought the entire first collection and now the brand has expanded to include ready-towear, resort, accessories and shoes.

The next year, the Olsen twins continued on their fashion takeover with the launch of their second line, Elizabeth and James. This line was a more contemporary brand inspired by many of the twin’s unique vintage finds and pieces found in their own personal wardrobes. In 2014, Ashley and Mary-Kate opened their first flagship store for The Row in Los Angeles. Rather then opening their first store in New York City, they wanted their line to be available where they grew up because they believe their customer is in tune with L.A. style. However, during this summer they opened their second flagship store in New York City where they have one of their two offices and they show their line. The Row is regularly presented at New York fashion week and has also been shown twice at Paris fashion week. The Row Fall/Winter 2016 collection was staged in the Olsens’ New York studio. The atmosphere was low key and intimate as the models walked through the rooms. The models were dressed in neutral hues and fluid silhouettes. There was a newfound severity to the tailoring in the businesslike pieces. However, beyond the suiting the Olsen twins displayed a sense of softness and seduction within the details. The lust-worthy wide leather belts knotted twice at the back added definition to the waistline of their soft kimono jackets. These sensual details set the twins apart from other designers and help them in the difficult fashion market. As The Row continues to grow and display Ashley and Mary-Kate’s ability to design and manufacture a luxury line, they continue to work at their second line Elizabeth and James as well. Ashley and Mary-Kate continue to shy away from the public’s fascination with them, perhaps due to their childhood acting days and they do not want their lines to be considered a celebrity brand. Rather the Olsen twins want to be known for creating beautiful pieces that fulfill a wardrobe with perfect items that are interchangeable. WWW.NICHE.STYLE

pon our arrival at Karma Kandara, it was immediately clear that the lush, winding drive from Denpasar had relocated us to paradise. We began our Balinese journey here, on the remote, southernmost tip of the Batik Peninsula, where the unspoilt jungle abruptly stops 350 metres above the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. It is a luxury hideaway designed to effortlessly erase the stresses of everyday life. At first glance, you’ll see the beginnings of a fairytale maze of walkways lined with tropical vegetation and large, colorful doors, each one opening up to a tranquil villa oasis.

Through these doors are accommodations ranging from one-bedroom villas to enourmous cliff-front residences, each featuring airy interiors, a plunge pool and private gardens. It’s difficult to imagine a more luxurious backdrop, and hardly surprising that Kandara is sought-after by publicity-shy celebrities and travelers looking to celebrate special occasions. The many offerings of this resort are hidden amid the dramatic cliff-side landscape. The world-renowned Karma Spa features an impressive menu of services, and provided much-needed respite for our tired muscles. We first indulged with traditional Balinese massages with local herb-infused oil, and finished with a dip in the spa’s private outdoor pool and shower lounge. Sublime dining experiences await guests at Di Mare Restaurant, which features a Mediterranean-inspired, seasonal menu. Order the freshly caught Ahi Tuna and take photos from the infinity pool below, as the view is spectacular. During the day, head to the Karma Beach Club, a slice of secluded waterfront reserved for resort guests. Descending to the club can be done by cable tram or steep hike (350 steps, to be exact). We spent our days here but if you don’t experience a candlelit beach dinner during your inaugural visit to Kandara, you haven’t really arrived. Tender charred lobster, infused with native spices, is paired with both sweet and savoury cocktails and served under the stars. Offshore, the faint glow of the spear fishermen’s flashlights is a reminder of Bali’s unique blend of ancient and modern cultural practices. After experiencing the exclusive luxury of Kandara, we were ready for a taste of Bali’s local scene. A short drive took us to the white sands of Jimbaran Bay, and

the second Karma property on our list., Karma Jimbaran. Large private villas are hidden throughout the beachside jungle and the faintest scent of incense followed us everywhere as we explored the palmframed grounds. No detail is overlooked. Koi ponds wrap around plush day beds and oversized, glass-fronted sliding doors open to a private pool. Dining in-house is encouraged, and the mahi mahi is a musttry. Should you want to explore beyond the gates of Karma Jimbaran, head to the beach just before sunset. We slipped into the easy rhythm of Balinese life while watching families gather to play in the sand and surf. Jimbaran Bay is an ideal swimming spot for all ages, as the beach is clean and the waves are calm. At dusk, a confetti of restaurants extend their tables to the shoreline and the entire beach flickers with candlelight. This is the place to try any and all seafood. Our hunt for cocktails led us around the corner to Rock Bar, one of the highest rated bars in the world. The steep price tag is justified by the intermittent fireworks displays that we watched, round-eyed, from a cozy booth suspended over the ocean. The next morning, as we made our way out of Jimbaran Bay, we stopped at the local fish market (be prepared to have a variety of freshly baited eyeballs staring at you as you make your selection). We left empty-handed and eager to head inland, where we would reach our final destination and the retreat-style accommodations of Karma Mayura. This property is nestled within a jungle-fringed riverbank on the outskirts of Ubud - Bali’s famed artisan village. The rooms feature hand-carved beds and large balconies with charming views of the Balinese

countryside. We ventured into town daily to experience the vibrant labyrinth of markets and shops filled with great food and exotic treasures. Mayura’s unique activity list includes a cooking class from an internationally trained Balinese chef. We woke up with the sunrise and headed to the market, where we toured the stalls and purchased ingredients for our five-course meal. Our chef, Made Suwardika, was wonderfully enthusiastic and encouraged us to pick unfamiliar produce. We chopped, laughed, and learned about traditional Balinese cooking methods under the palm trees in Mayura’s pop-up outdoor kitchen. Highlights included a satay lilit (hand-rolled mahi mahi on a stick) and glazed pork belly. It was a phenomenal experience that we’ve attempted to recreate at home without much luck. After a long day, we retreated to our room, high above the narrow river, which faced a gorgeous view of cascading foliage. As the weather turned, we drew a bath, opened the windows, and listened to the tropical storm. Small crocodiles swam in the waters below. The magic of Bali is tangible here, and Mayura is the perfect home base from which to experience and explore. Karma’s boutique properties share a timeless luxury and offer experiences to suit every taste. Fortunately, there are so many places to discover on this sacred island that leaving only ever feels temporary. The biggest challenge you’ll face is preserving your vacation mindset when you return to the real world. 62

I

t’s fair to say we are exhausted and burned out with the ideas that we need to be stick thin and strive for perfection that is far beyond the ability our minds and bodies are capable of. Millions of women are caught in this battle between the constant quest for perfection and what is actually possible for their bodies. The unfortunately thing is, in this quest for perfection we lose sight and touch with what our bodies actually need from us, what they desire and how we need to treat them for them to operate effectively and optimally. We are run by the fears in our minds, and those fears are planted from the excessive subliminal and direct

messages we are fed on a regular basis. When we are thumb scrolling our idea of perfection on Instagram on the way to work we are left feeling defeated and depleted. The filters, frames and edits that take place behind the scenes place us in an unfair constant state of comparison. We are walking around completely disconnected head and heart, mind and body. We have this image of how we should be and we internally are constantly obsessing over it. We play the ‘when-then’ game with ourselves on a regular basis. ‘When I lose 10 pounds then I willl____’ (insert here - get a boyfriend, go on a date, plan a beach holiday).


WHEN I LOSE 10 POUNDS, THEN I WILL ___________ When we play this game we are constantly distancing ourselves from what is possible within us. We discount the fact that in the present moment we have everything we need to live lives of freedom, ease and liberation. When we are waiting to live we are denying ourselves the ability to come alive, and when we do reach that goal, our inner critic does a great job of setting the bar higher so we are always just out of arms length from pure, sustainable happiness. I LIVED THIS WAY FOR YEARS. It was exhausting, obsessive and never-ending. There was a time in my life where I deemed it impossible to be happy in my body and at my current weight. So I became a full time dieter and did everything I could to just ‘get skinnier’. The cost of this obsession was high - it prevented me from fully living in my essence and distanced me from the closet people in my family. I was on Instagram like an addict trying to figure out what diet I needed to do next to look like a Victoria Secret model.

are at our core. Women have the ability to run the world, thank you Beyoncé, but it’s the truth. We are powerful, intuitive beings who are creators. The problems is we don’t quite know how powerful and strong we actually are, therefore we look outside of ourselves for the answers, we are on a constant quest to manipulate our external world to change the way we feel internally. You want to feel love? You want to feel acceptance? You want to feel safe? You want to feel strong? It’s an inside/outside job - when we create lightness in our emotional bodies we create lightness in our physical bodies. When we create strength in our minds, we create strength in our bodies. Shut down the world, the social media and the advertising playing on your insecurities. Shut it down and listen to the one thing that always has your back, your body.

I was constantly living in a state of competition and comparison, which robbed me fully of my selfcompassion and self-love; it was a constant drain. I wasn’t present in conversations, dinner parties or hangouts with close girlfriends because I was too concerned with how many calories were in my kale salad with no dressing. I came to realize after doing over 50 DIETS in less than 4 years that I was searching for a feeling, not a size.

I was searching for an inner love and acceptance which, to my surprise, was just not available in the quest to become skinny. As women, its imperative we honor our bodies, we listen to them and we treat them with unconditional love, yes unconditional. Not the kind of love that is dependent on the number on the scale. Within us is unlimited guidance, wisdom and the ability to direct us in our human experience. When we are at war with our bodies, we lose access to this beautiful internal wisdom, we block it. INTENSIFY THAT POUT For fall, gone are the days of cycling through your favorite nude and pink shades each day. It’s time to add some drama! The trend we saw making a regular statement was the dark, gothic-inspired lip. I would recommend using a shade with a berry or deep wine undertone so that it’s not too scary to your co-workers. If you’re a bit shy, pull this dramatic shade out at night once the sun goes down. MAC “Diva” is a staple when it comes to a dramatically fierce lip. Anastasia “Vamp”, which is a deep burgundy shade, is another great option if you like something more long-wearing.

SAY HELLO TO SILVER Many of us have resigned to never reaching towards a silver shade again. Popular back in the 80s and 90s, this metallic shade can look harsh if not applied properly. On the catwalks of designers like the sleek and sophisticated Stella McCartney, subtle pops of silver in the corners of the eyes were all the rage. Paired with a few coats of mascara or the Twiggy lash look, you are sure to be on-trend all season long. Opt for a silver that is soft and not too pigmented or harsh. KAT VON D Metal Crush Eyeshadow (a Sephora exclusive) is good option to start with. Build up the intensity as you see fit!

BYE BYE MATTE Gone are the days of the overly matte lip look. You can thank your lucky stars that your lips no longer need to peel, feel tight and get chapped because of drying long-wear lipsticks. On the runways of Max Mara and Christian Dior, we saw ultra wet, lacquered looking lips rocked confidently by models strutting their stuff. No matter what shade you are wearing, add MAC lip glass in “clear” on top and your pucker will be sure to memorize.

LAUREN BACALL SMART, SULTRY & BOLD BOMBSHELL

W

ith a trademark husky low voice, sultry appearance and feline like characteristics, Lauren Bacall was one of the most phenomenal talents in the Golden Age of Hollywood screen stars. Born as Betty Joan Perske in 1924 in New York City, Bacall was the daughter to Natalie, a Romanian Jewish immigrant who worked as a secretary and William a Polish Jewish immigrant from New Jersey who worked as a salesman. With the divorce of her parents at a young age, Bacall clung to her future of becoming a dancer. Later switching to acting, Bacall studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Bacall’s natural mystique and radiating glamour landed her on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1943. Landing a cover on the most famous US magazine was a turning point in Bacall’s career as it resulted in her first screen role. Famed Director’s Howard Hawks wife, Nancy Hawks spotted Bacall in the fashion publication and called her in for a screen test. Bacall flew to Hollywood for the audition and director Howard Hawk instantly signed Bacall to a seven-year contract. Bacall’s first role, at the tender age of 19, was playing Marie Browning in an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel To Have and Have Not (1944) a thriller where she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart. This film launched more than her career; it was the beginning of a love affair with Bogart. The couple met while Bogart was still married, but he left his wife, and Bacall and Bogart wed in 1945. Bacall gained the nickname, “Baby” because of the 25-year age gap between her and Bogart. The couple starred in many films together and had two children together, a son, Stephen and daughter, Leslie.

Starring in one film per year, Bacall’s movies were highly anticipated. Fans loved her believable acting in thriller and crime drama films; keeping viewers engaged with each production. Under management of Hawks, it was suggested that Bacall work on lowering her voice to give her a more unique casting advantage and sultry appeal to fans. Known for turning down roles she did not find interesting, Bacall gained a reputation of being difficult. In 1953, Bacall starred in her first comedy playing Schatze Page in How to Marry a Millionaire with other screen stars of Hollywood Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. After filming another box office hit, Designing Women in 1957, a devastating loss occurred when husband Humphrey Bogart died from throat cancer. The first year following Bogart’s death left Bacall trying to work through tough times and she starred in The Gift of Love (1958) before making a decision to switch to live Broadway performances. Bacall had a short-lived romance with Frank Sinatra, that resulted in a very brief engagement that didn’t lead to marriage. However, Bacall did marry

again to actor Jason Robards. They wed in Mexico in 1961 and divorced in 1969, in part to Robards struggle with alcoholism. Robards and Bacall have one son together, Sam. Returning to the screen after five years, Bacall appeared in many hits over the next decade including a Broadway musical, Applause. Another pivotal and successful acting role Bacall portrayed was Murder on the Orient Express (1974), a movie based on Agatha Christie’s best-selling book. Continuing to divide her time between Broadway and film, it was towards the end of her career that Bacall earned her first Oscar nomination for supporting Actress in the 1996 film The Mirror Has Two Faces, starring and directed by Barbra Streisand. Bacall had a life filled with star-studded memorable films until the day she died in August 2014, five weeks short of the 90th birthday. Bacall was one of the last links left to the Golden Age of Hollywood and left her legacy as well as inspiration to a generation of actresses.

Can we all agree on the above formula? After spending a lot of time in the guts of personal finance with hundreds of women from all walks of life, I’ve found that everyone everywhere wants those same two things, when you boil it right down. IT’S HOW WE DEFINE THOSE TWO WORDS JOY + FREEDOM THAT DIFFERENTIATES US.

There isn’t a finance professional out there - no matter how fancy their title or designations - who can provide you with those definitions. (If they try, run - run fast.) Very few of them will even be asking you how you define joy and freedom, but almost all of them will be asking you about your goals. Everyone, from financial advisors, to coaches, to your boss, your family, and your friends, will tell you to set goals. Goals, goals, goals. Dutifully, you go ahead and set them. You set goals to move further in your career, to buy some real estate, and

maybe even to retire. For some reason though, these goals just aren’t getting your juices flowing.

WHY NOT?

For a goal to be worthwhile, exciting, and something you can really commit to, it has to be linked to your definitions of joy and freedom - people sometimes call them “values”. It might bring you joy to lift someone up from homelessness. It might bring you joy to have a pair of really wicked Louboutins in your closet. Both might bring you joy - we don’t have to make all of our values altruistic. It may be freeing to own your own home - or it may mean lack of freedom, depending on who you are. Freedom might come as a month in Portugal, or one “you” day a week to spend with your kids, or even to spend alone. For many people, freedom looks a whole lot like not working for a living.

THINK ABOUT IT Your money is a tool for you to create the life you want. Get to know you. What do you want from life? What will make you feel joyful and free? Got those “joy” and “freedom” pieces? Great. Put them on a card in your wallet. Every time you go to make a purchase, ask yourself: Does this bring me one more step towards freedom? Does this bring me joy? Long-lasting joy comes from memories, not consumer goods. How long do you want the joy to last?

With joy and freedom as your guides, there’s no pressure to be cruel with yourself. You know what you really want. You know how much it means to you. Money isn’t a pain, an unknown that’s out there, doing things you don’t understand. It’s right here, working towards all the things you’ve ever wanted. At the same time, organizing your cash flow becomes easier. You can allocate funds towards necessity, joy, and freedom, and you’ll feel good about it every time you do. You’ll see the money in your joy account and know that it’s going to buy you that pedicure, dress, or that wild night out you’ve been thinking about. You’ll see the money in your
