es! It is officially fashion season. I have always chuckled at the fact that most women, myself included, get so excited at the notion of bundling up in boots, gloves, coats and layers of seasonal clothing. You would think, that just coming out of easy, breezy summer season, we would be resentful. Instead, we rejoice! This is our very first true global Fashion Issue, and aside from being more than 25 pages longer, it is unquestionably more focused editorially on fashion season. In this issue, we take a look back at our most favourite moments in runway shows from the last ten years [Fashion Forward, page 20]. Our fashion designer in the spotlight is Canadian Erdem Moralıoğlu [Fashion Legend, page 64], and Style Editor Josie Saldat is showcasing the best in global street style from Germany, Russia, Finland and the USA [NICHE Street Style, page 124]. I’m proud to introduce two new beauty experts to our lineup of columnists. Brittany Gray takes us inside her makeup bag, and

shows us what we need for fall [What’s In My Bag, page 44]. Makeup artist Alexandra Forman is sharing her trade secrets, helping you do more, with less [Beauty Hacks, page 26]. 2015 has definitely been a good year for supermodel (and our cover model) Kendall Jenner. Take a closer look at the fashion industry’s current “it” girl [Fashion Fix, page 122]. This is always the perfect season to take a risk with your fashion look and try something new. There is so much within the pages of our fashion issue to inspire you. Go on... Discover Yours!

by Elizabeth Dean | travel columnist idden in the lush west coast rain forest of Vancouver Island, is the ultra-remote and completely exquisite Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. Accessible only by boat or plane, the resort is tucked impeccably between glacial mountains in the fragile Clayoquot Sound Biosphere reserve. Guests arrive at the mouth of the Bedwell River, where it spills into a nine-mile long fjord, and are whisked to the resort by horse drawn carriage. The Bioshpere embodies untouched sea, land and sky - it is the natural museum of Canada’s West Coast. One place in the modern world where time has been a friend, allowing spectacular growth of virgin greens, and where the water and sky meet in a seamless crystal clear harmony.

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E ? The name Clayoquot was the early European explorer’s mispronunciation of the local band of first nations to the area - the Tla-o-qui-aht. Meaning ‘different’, the Tla-o-qui-aht peacefully inhabited the area until the late 18th century when Clayoquot Sound was explored by ships involved in the fur trade. In 1791 the intricate waters were mapped by José María Narváez and Juan Carrasco, while their commander, Francisco de Eliza, met and befriended Wickaninnish, chief of the Tla-o-qui-aht peoples.

orn in 1955 in Mogadishu, Iman Abdulmajid was raised by her parents – a diplomat and doctor alongside her two younger sisters and two older brothers. Furthering her early education in Egypt, Iman relocated to Kenya to study political science. While attending university, Iman was discovered by photographer Peter Beard. After sending images of the 5’10” Somolian darling back to Wilhelmina modeling agency in New York, she was accepted and invited to join the agency. Iman fibbed about her age to receive a passport and left Kenya without parental consent to enter the United States to pursue her modelling career. Starting off with great success, Iman became the first black supermodel and was booking jobs for Valentino Garavani, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Versace and Yves Saint Laurent.

ashion and music icon, David Robert Jones was born in South London in 1947 with an early adornment for rock music and beat literature from exposure to the industry by his elder brother, Terry. Throughout his early years, Bowie continued to play music which lead to him joining numerous bands and leading his own group called Davy Jones and the Lower Third. Venturing off on his own, Bowie embarked on an experimental period of his musical journey. Bowie signed with Mercury Records in 1969 and released the single Space Oddity which climbed to No. 15 on the U.S. charts with great success of being used during the coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing. It was not until his next album, The Man Who Sold the World with a heavier rock influence that Bowie gained momentum in the industry and when his 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders
from Mars released that Bowie had officially become a superstar and created a kaleidoscopic image of himself for the world. Becoming Ziggy Stardust himself, Bowie dressed in inspirational attire and spoke words of futuristic times that brought a new age to the rock era. It was not until 1990 at a dinner party in Los Angeles that the rock star and supermodel had a proper introduction. After many years of brief passing, the two locked eyes and Bowie instantly fell in love. Iman who was reluctant to date a rock star took some convincing to date the most famous man in music, but after two weeks Bowie had changed her mind as he stood at the airport upon her arrival from Paris, with flowers in hand avoiding pictures and flocking fans, with his stardust eyes set only on Iman. Bowie arranged a romantic River Seine cruise for just the two of them on which he proposed under the Pont Neuf bridge while serenading her.

FAST FACTS Did you know... DAVID BOWIE fearing he would be confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees, changed his surname to Bowie, after the knife that was designed in the 19th century by American pioneer, Jim Bowie.

man and Bowie both had children from previous relationships; Iman has a daughter, Zulekah, with pro basketball player, Spencer Haywood, and Bowie has a son, Duncan, with Angela Bowie. In 2000, Iman and Bowie had a child together, Alexandria Zahra Jones. Iman retired from modeling in 1989 after paving the way in fashion for a generation of ethnically diverse models. Now Iman focuses on her cosmetics empire which is based upon self-celebration of women of colour and truly global and multi-cultural, charity work – an ambassador for ‘Keep a Child Alive’ an African AIDS charity and is also an author. Alice Temperley created a kaleidoscope of colour with Temperley London’s Fall 2015 RTW collection. Take note of graphic shapes and pops of vibrant hues on solid black - this is a beautiful way to deliberately showcase the fine detail of embroidery.
If that’s a bit too bold for you, then I suggest pouring yourself a cup of tea and having a peek at Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2015 collection. As perfect as the many roses featured on their runway, their classically cut dresses make me think of vintage-inspired tea parties with both threaded and sequined floral appliqués, Italian words of love, and children’s drawings interestingly placed all over their looks. And it didn’t stop there! On other fall 2015 runways, Chanel got serious with rhinestone appliqués, Tory Burch brought out a head-totoe tapestry look, and Lanvin took us on an embroidery safari.

Re-creating this trend on clothing is easy to do at home with a few simple tools. If you’re embroidering, make sure to use embroidering thread, a thimble, a good needle, and lots of patience. You’ll also need a pair of small, sharp scissors. Appliqués take much less time and have come a long way since the 1970’s- head to your local craft or textile store for inspiration. Most are usually iron-on, which means you can get that old pair of jeans looking runway-ready by the weekend! What has been made very clear from this season’s shows is that the placing can be as random as you wish- it is truly about adding a personalized and interesting detail, wherever that may be.

hhhhh Mexico…
One of my favourite countries on the planet. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to Mexico many times over the past 25 years and have enjoyed the culture, beaches, weather and the people so much I’ve returned nearly every year. All of Mexico is not the same however, and albeit every area has its deliciously enticing lures, none in my opinion, can compare to the alluring and incredibly beautiful city of PUERTO VALLARTA. At first glance, it’s easy to be drawn in by PV’s lush landscape of jungle, mountains and beautiful sandy beaches, but what many folks don’t realize about Puerto Vallarta is that is also so rich in history and culture. From quaint cobblestones streets, filled with stunning churches and sidewalks filled with artisans, to cosmopolitain hotels and stunning remote beaches I absolutely fell in love with this magical place. I now consider Puerto Vallarta to be my new favourite Mexican destination. Upon our arrival in PV, the girls and I were quickly whisked away and taken to our host

Puerto Vallarta hotel called Garza Blanca Preserve Resort and Spa. Flanked by the blue waters of the Pacific and surrounded by the mountains of Sierra Madre, this hotel was 5-star in every way and believe me, I am a pretty tough critic. Whether it be a girls weekend away, a family vacation or a romantic getaway, this hotel was exquisite, but yet very homey and the staff were exceptionally personable. One thing I don’t believe many people know about Puerto Vallarta is that it is indeed a very cosmopolitan, multicultural city. Home to some of the best cuisine and restaurants anywhere in Mexico, the NICHE team and I did a pretty good job eating our way through Puerto Vallarta! The first night we were so excited to have reservations at one of Mexico’s award winning restaurant, Cafe Des Artistes. Incredible! The food was not only was delicious, but every dish looked like a culinary masterpiece. All of the restaurants we were able to visit were fantastic and all
had very unique flavours and design. All dressed in white from head to toe was La Leche Restaurant, which served us all different entrees so we were able to take a pinch of everything (amazing!) and cocktails that were to die for. Maia Restaurant was our choice when it came to authentic Mexican food. Combined with its artsy , unique Mexican specializes and Agave margarita’s we were on Cloud “Nueve”! It may appear that all we did was eat, but not so fast! After a fab fruit breakfast at our hotel, the gals and I headed to one of the most incredibly beautiful places I have ever been and let me mention, Zen. After a quick jet boat ride to a remote beach, we were welcomed to Xinalani Yoga Retreat. A cliffside resort meant strictly for those seeking solitude, healthy living and a bit of yoga. A little bit of what I like to call “Yogadise”. Never before had I felt so peaceful and after a private yoga class up in the tree hut, we were ready to sail onto the Pacific aboard Canuwa Charters yacht to see

Next stop was the infamous El Eden Waterfalls. A popular place mainly because it is the famed film set for “Predator” starring Arnold Swartzenegger, but also for the stunning fresh waterfalls and scenic ziplining. We shopped through the local artisan markets, meandered down the main cobblestone streets by famous landmarks and churches and were even lucky enough to get a sneak peek inside the beautiful PV home that once romanced Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The ladies and I walked and explored, ate and drank, swam, sunbathed and laughed. I could not have enjoyed my time anymore than with these amazingly talented women and without the hospitality of Elvira and her team at Puerto Vallarta Tourism. I enjoyed every single second of my PV adventure!

ERDEM MORALIOGLU E
by Jennifer Costanzo | fashion columnist
rdem Moralioglu was born in 1977, in Montreal, Canada. Most commonly referred to as Erdem, like his namesake label, he comes from a multicultural background with a Turkish father and English mother. His childhood was spent in between Montreal, where he was born and Birmingham, England. This gave the designer a sense of growing up in a unique cultural background, not fitting into one typical box. He does not associate with being English, Turkish or Canadian, but a bit of everything.

From his homes in Montreal and Birmingham, he moved to Toronto to pursue his career in fashion design. He received his Bachelors Degree in fashion design from Ryerson University in Toronto and was appointed an internship with the acclaimed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood quickly after. In 2000, Erdem went back to his English roots and moved to London to further his career in fashion design. He enrolled at the Royal College of Art and received his Masters Degree in 2003 in fashion design. After completing his Masters Degree in London and experiencing a bit of the British fashion scene, Erdem decided to make the move to New York to continue his education in the fashion industry. Here, he worked alongside another renowned fashion designer, Diane von Furstenberg. However, after just two years, Erdem decided to move back to London and launch his own label Erdem. His first collection won him the Fashion Fringe prize and acknowledgement from the British fashion industry. Just two years later he won another major fashion award, the Swarovski British Fashion Council Fashion Enterprise Award.

THE DARK SIDE OF
PRETTY PHOTOGRAPHER KENNETH KWOK
86
F A S H I O N I S S U E FA L L 2 0 1 5
Canadian fashion photographer Kenneth Kwok teamed up with makeup artist Elena Ismail to illustrate that pretty doesn’t always need to be pink lipstick and soft lighting. The creative team deliberately chose a model that is known for her softer side, and went to work creating her edgy alter ego. In search of palpable moods and high contrast photography, the team shot on a typical Vancouver day that was sunny one moment, and overcast the next – a fitting parallel for the in-between worlds Kwok was looking to capture. Using landscapes that are both hard and soft, and choosing fashion that takes a back seat to the photographic story, Kwok was able to visually walk a fine line between beauty and gloom.

FOOT FIXES for fall
by Gracie Andoque | beauty columnist
A
re your feet cold weather ready? September marks a momentous time for fashion. With the flurry of fashion weeks and style season comes the blustery cold weather. It’s time to fling off those sandals and trade them in for boots. It’a true - the aftermath of summer on our feet can be challenging - dry, rough skin and cracked heels and soles from feet being exposed to the hot weather elements. Far from sexy, right? Don’t let your feet go on fall hiatus! Get them strutting in healthy sophistication. Here’s how::
PAMPER Immerse your feet in a tub of warm water to reduce swelling and soften skin for 15 minutes. Elevate the benefits by adding a teaspoon of whole milk and a few drops of honey.
EXFOLIATE This will slough away dead skin to reveal softer, rejuvenated and healthier feet. This will also help eliminate skin around the feet from drying out and cracking.
NOURISH Foot masks are known for its many benefits including sealing in moisture and the prevention of daily wear and tear of your feet.

HACKS
FIVE MUST TRY BEAUTY
1 96
by Alexandra Forman | beauty expert Y O G A B R O W S . “The higher the better” I always say. Well, at least when it comes to the eyebrow arch. Lifting the brow can take years off, which brings us to our next beauty hack - the yoga brow! Best to do this one without an audience. Place your finger right below your natural brow arch, pushing upwards towards your forehead. Now, using your forehead muscles, push down on your opposing finger and hold for 10 seconds. Release for 10, and repeat this series ten times (10-10-10). You will notice an immediate difference between yoga brow and non-yoga brow. Continue this daily for permanent results. W I N G E D T I P . The perfect winged liner can be a thing of beauty, but unless you have the steady hands of an artist writing on rice, you may get a wee bit frustrated. Don’t fret. This beauty hack will make your liquid liner job look like it was done by a pro. All you need is scotch tape. Grab a one inch strip of tape and stick it onto your hand a couple times to reduce stickiness, then place it underneath your bottom lashes at the outer corner of your eye, following your bottom lash line. Angle it towards your temple for the perfect wing. Draw the line and ‘Tada!’ Your perfect winged liner.
6 - D L I P S . We all want beautiful Kendall Jenner lips. Here is a safe try-at-home trick guaranteed to make your lips look more voluptuous in just minutes or your money back. Before applying any lipstick, rub a light amount of peppermint oil on your lips. Not only does it smell delicious but it also brings blood to the area, temporarily puffing up the lips. Next, grab your lip liner and do something your mother always told you never to do. Line outside the perimeter of your own lips, creating more lip square footage. Then grab a light lipstick and a dark lipstick, applying the lightest lipstick in the centre of the lips and the darker lipstick on the outside corners of the lips. Next, blend with a high shine gloss. The light in the middle will create a 3D … no wait …. 6D lip pout. Next, take a bronzer or contour colour and brush a slight amount right under the bottom lip creating the illusion of a shadow casting off those big kissers. Last but not least, dust a small amount of illuminating powder on your cupid’s bow and, ‘POW!’ Look out Scarlett Johansson.
4 5
M O M S T R O B I N G . With strobing/extreme highlighting and shine being all any makeup guru can talk about, a lot of you oilier complexioned ladies may be cringing at this new found trend. ‘Yikes! Won’t it make my face look even oilier? You’re probably thinking that just like high-waisted jeans, it’s just not for everyone. Well, I agree with the Mom jeans but everyone, and I mean everyone, can fall in love with strobing with this ONE little trick. Okay, so bee line it straight to your medicine cabinet and grab your mother’s old cure for your stomach ailments, Milk of Magnesia (MOM). Apply thinly all over the face with a makeup pad. This is not only one of the best primers on the market, leaving you slick free on the hottest of days, but it reduces oil production with prolonged use and is cheap! I always carry MOM in my kit, and it also comes in handy for a nervous stomach. Thanks MOM.
Y O U T H F U L B L U S H . Now besides throwing on a backpack and sporting pigtails, this hack is the next best thing for looking 12 again. All you need is blush, and the trick to picking the perfect blush colour for this technique is to pull your bottom lip down and find a blush that closest matches the colour of the inside of your bottom lip. Take a light blush brush and first place blush on the highest part of the apples on your cheeks. Now connect those two apples with a blush bridge across the nose. What you are trying to recreate is a light pinkness across the nose and cheeks where the sun would hit. If you look back at all those polaroids of you when you were little, you will see that exact light pink placement across your chubby cheeks and button nose. Mimicking this gives the illusion of a more youthful face. Trust me. You might even get ID’d. NICHEmagazine.ca

Tattoos have a power and magic all their own. They decorate the body but they also enhance the soul. - MICHELLE DELIO, AUTHOR TATTOO – THE EXOTIC ART OF SKIN DECORATION
M
by Tracey Drake
argot Mifflin, in her book Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoo, 3rd Edition says that in 2012, for the first time in history, tattooed women outnumbered tattooed men in the United States (23% versus 19%). Canada isn’t far behind. Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, David Beckham, Rihanna, Lena Dunham, and Johnny Depp have played a big role in making the art of beautiful inking a mainstream fashion statement. Done right and tattoos take on a life of their own, dancing on the flesh with vibrancy and determination. Tattoos have seen a dramatic resurgence in North American popular culture. The growing mainstream interest has also affected advancements in tattoo pigments and equipment. With progress comes higher quality inks and tattoos being produced that are truly spectacular works of art.
108 F A S H I O N
I S S U E FA L L 2 0 1 5
A widespread interest in the art of tattooing began in the 1990s and became significantly evident on the female body in the 2000s, spurring several reality television shows including LA Ink starring the world’s most famous tattooist, Kat Von D. Many believe that Kat has been a major influencer for women to get inked. Others believe it began in the 1970s – with Janis Joplin’s small heart tattoo on her left breast and tattooed wristlet being a pivotal moment in the widespread acceptance of tattoos as art. While it may be true that some get a tattoo because it is trendy or is perceived as a unique fashion accessory; more often than not, a tattoo still has a tale to tell or a secret to keep.

So, when I am on holiday, I prefer to be removed from the main street action of a resort town; just far enough so that I can find my own vacation rhythm but not so far that I cannot partake of the nightlife and dining, when the mood strikes me. This is what I loved most about Nita Lake Lodge. Perched elegantly on a pristine glacier fed lake, Nita Lake Lodge is just a five minute shuttle (complimentary) ride from the heart of Whistler Village. I chose the Hepburn quote quite on purpose, because Nita Lake Lodge reminded me a little of Audrey; beautiful, majestic and well put together, but never pretentious or boastful — equally comfortable in heels and lipstick or ballet flats and a ponytail.

Named one of the top 25 hotels in Canada by TripAdvisor, this massive wood lodge is located a mere 500 metres from the base of Whistler Mountain in the Creekside community. Our lakefront suite was spacious and comfortable, with a massive beamed wall with fireplace that separated the living and sleeping areas. Expansive windows in both rooms and a balcony overlooking Nita Lake quickly became a favourite spot to convene for drinks and conversation; early morning with coffee and late evening with a great bottle of B.C wine. The spa bathroom featured a massive soaker tub and a 2-person stone tiled glass shower. I was also impressed with the L’Occitane en Provence toiletries, one of my favourite brands. Dining at Nita Lake Lodge was certainly a gastronomic treat! Lunch at Fix Café was homemade heaven, with delicious breads and pastries, expertly brewed coffee and one of the best fruit smoothies I have ever had. Dinner at Aura Restaurant was a multi-course sensation, and we reveled in every mouthful. Whistler’s only train station is located at Nita Lake Lodge and there is a lovely walking path behind the hotel, which meanders alongside the creek and railway tracks. This is also the type of property that you just want to spend time in the open concept lobby and public spaces.
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed,
and redeemed -AUDREY HEPBURN
Cure Lounge, the central bar area with oversize lodge furnishings was warm and cozy. I recommend sampling their craft cocktails — including Two On The Roof, made with gin, fresh Lavender syrup, fresh lemon and soda. No wellness retreat is complete without a trip to the spa, and The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge did not disappoint. The peace and tranquility was palpable from the moment I walked through the spa doors. The relaxation lounge was flooded with natural light and comfortable chaises. The rooftop hot tub and steam room were divine, and the treatments were professional and much needed. I highly recommend Sole Therapy and Nurturing Body Wrap treatments. The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge specializes in wellness featuring sustainably-sourced organic products and offering an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the mountains, surrounded by natural awesomeness and created to elevate your senses and your expectations of what a great destination resort should be, Nita Lake Lodge was the perfect place for me to restore, renew, revive, reclaim and redeem. The management of Nita Lake Lodge dubs its property to be exceptional, intimate, authentic. An enthusiastic YES on all three counts from me.
