Turn the page and our shoe feature is all about D&G’s spring collection [Hell on Heels, page 10], the brand is mentioned as a spring style trend [Eric Himel’s Stylish Life, page 10], and a topic of discussion in Sylvia Tennant’s article about this season’s hottest accoutrement [Accessory Wall, page 58].

AUDREY HEPBURN

R

ecognized for her fashion and film, Audrey Hepburn was an influential talent during Hollywood’s Golden Age. Born in Brussels, Belgium on May 4th 1929, Hepburn had a Dutch mother and English/Austrian father. Her parent divorced while Hepburn was young, and did not have the easiest childhood. Between relocating to London and attending private school and then to the Netherlands, Hepburn followed wherever her mother chose go. Believing they would be safe in Holland, Hepburn lived here with her mother during World War. However, Holland was invaded and Hepburn became depressed and malnourished during the Nazi occupation. Brighter days were to come after the liberation. Hepburn was accepted to a ballet school in London on a scholarship and soon after began her modeling career. Hepburn had an undeniable grace and a delicate frame which film producers took notice of. Being fluent in English, Dutch, Spanish, French and Italian, Hepburn developed a unique accent which was one of the many characteristics she was known for throughout her journey to becoming one of the most recognizable film stars. Hepburn’s first film was a bit part in European film Dutch in Seven Lessons (1948) and her first speaking roll was Young Wives’ Tale (1951).

HEPBURN WAS A MOTHER OF 2 sons, Sean H. Ferrer with her first husband and Luca Dotti with her second.

did you KNOW?

Hepburn found her niche in the industry and moved to America to fulfill her dreams. Her stardom began with instant prominence with her starring role in Roman Holiday (1953) which earned Hepburn an Oscar for Best Actress. Over the next few years Hepburn continued to dominate the silver screen with Academy nominated movies, but it was not until Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) that Hepburn would secure her legacy and win a second Academy Award. One of Hepburn’s most notable films, My Fair Lady (1964) was with co-star Rex Harrison. During the filming of Sabrina, Hepburn and co-star William Holden sparked a chemistry while Holden was married. As their relationship blossomed Holden was prepared to leave his wife for Hepburn, but she wanted children and moved onto a new love interest. As the 1960s drew to a close, Hepburn divorced her husband, Mel Ferrer, and briefly retired

while she was still at the height of her career. The starlet remarried, this time to to Dr. Andrea Dotti and continued to work sporadically throughout the 1970s, despite her retirement. In 1988, one of Hepburn’s most memorable real life roles, she became a special ambassador to the United Nations UNICEF fund, helping children in Africa and Latin America which she continued to do until her death from appendicular cancer in 1993, at age 63. Packing more into her short life than most could accomplish in two lifetimes, Hepburn was a silver screen legend, muse, mother, fashion icon and humanitarian. Remembered for her inner radiance and elegance, impeccable style and living a selfless life to put others first, Hepburn will remain as not only one of the most classically stunning and humble people in the world, but also one of the most iconic celebrities of all time.

STYLISH LIFE BY: ERIC HIMEL | CELEBRITY STYLIST

T

his spring, turn a blah outfit into WOW with textures and shapes. Aside from colour, textures and shapes add dimension and interest and take your look to the next level.

Here’s a round up of the top trends for spring that will work on every body and have even your frenemies wanting to reach out and touch you! FRINGE Fringe has been around for a few seasons now and it isn’t going anywhere! It is found on skirts, jackets, tops, dresses, shoes and bags. It gives that 70s vibe that is all over the place for the season. In addition, it has movement and can elongate, which equals looking taller and just plain fun. Stylist Tip: Where it in one piece of clothing or accessory — where too much and you may be mistaken for Annie Oakley! Watch for: BCBG, Rebecca Taylor, Louboutin, Prabal Gurung SUEDE Suede is no longer just a winter fabric, it has become a perennial favourite for the in-theknow fashion crowd. It’s all about not wearing

too much at once and wearing a lighter, unlined version. Chose colours in the pastel family or hues that mimic the desert and you will not only look appropriate but be uber-luxe. Also, don’t be afraid to pair a suede clutch with an all white outfit. Watch for: Balmain, Flora Bella TEXTURED FLAT MULES A textured flat mule? What is it that you say? Flat mules are all the rage, they are the antithesis to the heel and are uber-comfortable. So adding texture to this divine heel-alternative sent by the gods only ups the ante. Watch for: Alexander Wang, Edun RUFFLES Ruffles can be girly, flirty and feminine. They add dimension and fun! Find them this season on the sleeve, hem or around the neck as an accent but buyer beware: placed in the wrong spot (i.e. - your chest if you are large-bosomed) and you can add on unwanted heft. Watch for: J.W. Anderson, Asos, Michael Kors, Maguire, Dolce & Gabbana NETTING Netting can add some much-needed sexiness to an outfit with its inherent transparency and edginess. It is not for the fashion faint-of-heart. But this texture added in the correct way ups your cool factor. Wear it in the wrong way and you may be mistaken for a freshly caught fish! Watch for: Proenza Schouler, Philip Lim, Chicos

TOUCH ME! this season is all about texture but let’s get it right! ERIC HIMEL is a widely known celebrity stylist, fashion expert and media personality. Raised in Toronto and Dallas, Himel moved to New York City where he attended Parson’s School of Design and trained under Project Runway’s Tim Gunn. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and began his styling career, expanding his business across the US and Canada. Himel’s roster of celebrity clientele has included Jenny McCarthy, Giuliana Rancic, Pete Wentz, Gabby Douglas and more, and Eric’s work has been featured in nearly every major women’s lifestyle magazine in the US. He’s best known for his signature Closet Purge™ and has recently began leveraging the online landscape, offering Virtual Styling Sessions. 30

SPRING ISSUE 2016

MARLED KNITS A knit is a knit is a knit - how to mix it up? A *marled knit (*fibers of different colours that are twisted together to produce an unusual look.) Knits are intrinsically tenured by nature - add a marled one to your wardrobe, and you get texture mixed with a totally cool new way to introduce colours into your look! Watch for: Jason Wu, Ann Taylor Loft, Rag & Bone, Creatures of Comfort LINGERIE Lingerie, usually relegated to the bedroom, has come out of the closet so to speak. Smooth, sexy and sensual, satins silks and lace caress the body and make women feel like women. Pair a structured jacket overtop for a chic juxtaposition. Watch for: Wes Gordon, Givenchy, Asos LIGHTWEIGHT DENIM Everyone loves denim, so of course designers always try to come up with new ways to showcase it. Lightweight denim makes sense for the season and the softer, unconstructed look and feel can be a more flattering fit. There is literally something for everyone - even a bag! Watch for: Opening Ceremony, Seven For All Mankind, Martin Grant, Jimmy Choo KNIFE PLEATS he skinnier sister of last season’s carwash pleats, knife pleats are easier to wear and more flattering to be sure. Chose a soft knife-pleat in a dress, a more structured one in a skirt or just a touch of this detail in a top! Watch for: Altuzarra, Asos, Proenza Schouler, Alexander McQueen

ERIC’S STYLE TIPS FOR GETTING SEASONAL TRENDS RIGHT! • DON’T OVER DO IT: COMBINING MORE THAN 2 TEXTURES IN A LOOK AND YOU MAY RESEMBLE A DIY PROJECT. • PICK YOUR BATTLES: IF YOU ARE DEMURE AND NOT AN EXHIBITIONIST, NETTING MAY NOT BE FOR YOU. • HOT IN THE CITY: WHILE SUEDE IS TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE FOR SPRING, IT STILL CAN BE HOT - SO CHECK THE FORECAST. • TEXAS TUXEDO: DENIM ON DENIM CAN BE UBER-CHIC, BUT BREAK UP THE LOOK WITH A BELT, SHOES AND BAG IN A DIFFERENT COLOR AND TEXTURE. • NIGHTY-NIGHT: LINGERIE IS SEXY BUT MAKE SURE YOU GROUND IT WITH AND PIECE THAT IS MORE STRUCTURED OR HARDER SO IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE YOU ARE SLEEP WALKING. have many articles to write about my time in Ireland, and those will come in time; stories about the raging culinar y scene in B elfast, the duality of Dublin’s old and new, and the stoic stone sentinels that watch over the seas at Giant’s Causeway. And even though my visit to Lough Erne occurred at the tail end of my Irish adventure, it was here that my true understanding of Ireland happened, in a way that I never could have imagined. Lough Erne Resort is this magnificent, sprawling hotel proper ty nestled in Northern Ireland’s Enniskillen countr yside. The resort has a world class golf course that will host the 2017 Irish Open. B ecause of its fortress like locale, ease of security and unique accommodation offerings, Lough Erne also hosted the G8 Summit in 2013. Rumour has it that Putin slept in the same room that I did - a private suite that took up the entire top f loor of a stone turret Little Paris Lodge 19. It had the most magical vantage point to watch the morning fog roll in across the emerald hills that went from wild fescue grasses to beautiful manicured lawns. You cannot travel any where and not have a culinar y experience. Food is an integral par t of how we experience cultures and remember our travels. Chef Noel McMeel taught me about Northern Ireland, its bright future that never forgets its histor y ; homegrown heritage that always has and always will be anchored in the family kitchen. Much of our time at Lough Erne was spent with Chef Noel McMeel or eating his delicious foods. For me, and my Irish experience, this one man embodies the spirit of Ireland. I brought home a copy of his new book. Irish Pantr y. An excerpt from the book’s introduction sums it up. 34

SPRING ISSUE 2016

#TheTravellingEditor

“In the hou se where I g re w up, nestled in the countr yside of Toomebr idge, Countr y Antr im, my mother’s kitchen pantr y featured a cooling marble slab and sighing shelves laden w ith traditional and deliciou s treats standing at the ready to su stain my large family, or to celebrate the v ibrant stream of expec ted and unexpec ted g uests we loved to welcome. Making the most of the bount y of the land, working hard w ith your ow n t wo hand s to preser ve it, and opening the home to share it - these were the core pr inciples where I g re w up. I’d go so far as to say it’s the Ir i sh way.” The vistas of Northern Ireland are so pretty like a master painting coming to life (just for you) as you drive through the countr yside. The people are genuine and welcoming; some of the f riendliest I have come across in all my travels. Local talent abounds, like Chef Noel McMeel who has cooked for royalty and presidents, and yet chose to stay and share his talents, showcase his community, and celebrate his roots. Without question, it is the soul of Nor thern Ireland that has endeared itself to me forever. If you haven’t been recently or you have never travelled to Nor thern Ireland, put it on your bucket list immediately. But f irst, f ind a copy of Irish Pantr y and experience Ireland through the words and f lavours of Chef Noel McMeel. Yes, it’s a cookbook, but it reads like a personal tale of growing up in a traditional Irish cottage. Noel’s recipes are just a bonus gift! I recommend making the Sweet Irish Pancakes (page 80) and Orange and Oat S cones (page 107).

ow is the time we all covet. The grass turns to vibrant shades of green, the sun shines bright, the tulips begin to bloom and we all get that glorious glimpse of summer, which is not too far off! With a new season brings a new opportunity to reassess your makeup case; a bag that has likely gone a bit stale over the winter. Spring is the perfect time to inject new staples into your beauty routine, with products that makeup artists swear by. Here’s an insider peek at what’s hot this season!

1.

LIGHTWEIGHT FOUNDATION

2.

LIFT THOSE BEAUTIFUL LASHES TO THE SKY There is a new mascara on the market that does an incredible job at lifting and separating your lashes and making it look like you might even be wearing falsies. This new cheap and cheerful staple is sure to stick around for the long haul, which is Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara. It has tremendous staying power (even without using the waterproof formulation) and doesn’t flake off or smudge under the eyes. The tapered rubber wand helps get right into the roots of the lashes, all the way to the tips.

In warmer weather, the last thing we want to do is load on cakey foundation each morning. Opt for a luxurious foundation that will give you a natural coverage with a dewy and fresh finish without feeling too greasy. Makeup artists swear by Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation. This product is an amazing formulation and is available in a broad range of colours.

IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR NATURAL GLOW ON Spring is the time of year where we all feel a bit pale as we begin to bare more skin than we have during the winter. To add the perfect glow to your face and décolletage, try Chanel’s Soleil Tan De Chanel. This product will give you a radiant, tanned look without being too dark, harsh or orange in tone. It is the perfect shade to look naturally sun-kissed and beautiful for spring. For application purposes, purchase a synthetic contour brush for easy application and blending.

5.

CHANGE UP YOUR FRAGRANCE During the winter, we tend to wear scents that are richer in notes and moodier in their formulations. A beautifully fresh and regal scent for spring that is a wonderful seasonal selection is Jo Malone’s English Pear & Freesia perfume. It is an elegant fragrance.

With Kylie Jenner’s new line of lip products and an Instagram following like no other, the matte look seems to be sticking around for longer than fads would. My personal favourites are Dose Of Colors in Truffle, Stone and Bare With Me. These are gorgeous shades that will stay on for many hours without needing regular touch-ups.

ACCESSORY WALL SEASON OF THE SCARF by Sylvia Tennant | fashion columnist

The IN Accessory for Spring 2016 The slow and steady infiltration of 60’s and 70’s style continues to manifest itself on the runways of the world’s most iconic brands. Although fringe of all kinds has held a special place in my closet for years, the throwback trend I’m most excited to experiment with this season is the scarf. The malleability of this accessory is well interpreted in fashion at the moment. Fortunately, designers are styling easy-toreplicate looks in their recent collections that incorporate everything from headdresses to wrist scarves. Celebrities, models, and style bloggers have also helped translate fashion’s hottest spring accessory so that we, the masses, now have examples of how to turn a confusing fabric puzzle (how DOES it stay on your head?) into a next-level outfit. Headdresses

DOLCE & GABBANA

SPRING ISSUE 2016

From refined and modern to renegade punk, the scarf headdress is positioned to replace the flat-brimmed hat as the chameleon accessory of the season. I prefer a bohemian turban style because it is universally flattering for all face shapes, however I’m challenging myself to take on Dolce & Gabbana’s dramatic side knot. For those who want to warm up to this trend slowly, Chanel went a bit more conservative with thin fabric headbands, and Gucci’s straight-across bad girl look is perfect for novice scarf wrappers wanting to emulate festival fashion.

Neck & Wrist Scarves It’s officially time to put the blanket scarf to bed. As we shed our winter layers and begin the seasonal closet transition, think thin, light silks, in either slim or wide cuts. Whether you tie it tight at the neck or let it loose down the bust, be bold and make a statement. Colours and patterns are always a good idea. Emilio Pucci wrapped their signature kaleidoscopic scarves around models’ wrists, which has inspired me to look through vintage and secondhand shops. Bag Scarves Personalizing your purse with a scarf is the easiest interpretation of this trend. What is most exciting is that one can elevate forgotten handbags with a chic but playful new look in seconds. Stay effortless and flowing with a single knot or wrap the handles to add a textured flare to structured bags.

orn in Alberta, Brittany Wacher did not always want to be a designer. However, she ended up enrolling at La Salle University in Vancouver, B.C. to study Fashion Design. It was at La Salle that Wacher discovered her creative side and decided to pursue a career in fashion. She is now one of Canada’s emerging designers and is based out of Montreal. Wacher is not the stagnant type, she has a studio in Vancouver where she produces her line and shows her collection across Canada. Working between Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver is one of the many reasons why Wacher’s has an interest in travel. This calling caused her to work all over the world before settling back in Canada, bringing her unique style to the Canadian fashion scene. After graduating from La Salle University, Wacher worked as a stylist in Thailand. At first this was not her intention. As she was travelling and visiting family in Thailand, she decided to get involved in the fashion scene. Wacher prefers to travel to immerse herself in another culture, not for a typical holiday. Here she jumped into the Thailand fashion scene and remained there for some time before making her next big move. As her fashion career began to blossom, Wacher relocated to Arnhem, Netherlands, where she worked with Dutch designer, Pauline Van Dongen. Wacher describes Van Dongen’s atelier as a science laboratory, where her practice is very specific and magnificent. It is here that Wacher really refined her approach to garment construction and helped her realize the designer she is today. Eventually Wacher found a calling to come back to Canada to design and began her own collection, Brit Wacher. As difficult as it is to start a fashion line, even more so in Canada’s fashion industry, Wacher has managed to master the craft. By sourcing her fabric in Montreal, Italy and Thailand, her collections have a global level of craftsmanship that places her on an international level in the fashion industry. She has

shown at Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver Fashion Weeks, as well as ‘Who’s Next Tradeshow’ in Paris and Beijing Fashion Week. Her clothing has been worn on Saturday Night Live as well as in numerous fashion magazines. Inspiration for Wacher is not just something she finds while traveling or on the streets but rather it jumps out from everywhere for her, it is both overwhelming and beautiful. Wacher’s design process is different each and every day. A usual day for the designer is not at all typical. Wacher likes working in her studio in the afternoon until very late at night or very early in the morning, and then she begins all over again. When Wacher is not in production mode, she enjoys being surrounded by nature. She is not only a fashion designer but also an artist in her own right. Wacher finds creativity through throwing paint at walls, dancing to the moon and back and making little melodies on the piano before breakfast. She especially enjoys spending time atop her rooftop garden where she is able to escape the busyness of the world and can relax. If Wacher is struggling with a creative block, she just chooses not to create anything but rather looks to nature and the arts to help her through this period.

SPRING ISSUE 2016

For Brit Wacher Spring/Summer 2016, Wacher found inspiration from multi-era attitudes mashed together. Each piece is unique from the last, while also being wearable. The versatility of a piece is important to Wacher, as well as functionality. One key piece in the Spring/Summer 2016 collection called: Flower Planter Pocket Dress has oversized pockets that can carry everything you need. Wacher says by carrying objects in the pockets it changes the drape of the garment on the body, which she really liked. Sustainability is important to Wacher and she considers it while designing all her collections. All of her jersey products are sustainable and made from organic bamboo fiber. As Brittany Wacher continues designing she wishes to keep experimenting with construction, process and performance in her fashion career. Check out Wacher’s Instagram account and website for future collections and updates. Learn more about this emerging designer and experience her latest collection online at britwacher.com

ONE HOTEL FOUR DAYS SEVEN EMERALDS

by Sylvia Tennant | lifestyle columnist

O

ne of South America’s premier cultural destinations, Bogotá has evolved beyond the shadowy history of its scandalous past into an abundant playground of luxury tourist attractions. While the formality of the Colombian capital is still evident in the monumental colonial buildings and free museums scattered throughout the city’s districts, the cordial semblance of order is dwarfed by a passionate liveliness that extends throughout its winding, graffiti-lined streets.

Experiencing the best of Bogotá with only four days to spare requires some research. As a sleep-deprived columnist, adjusting to a significantly higher altitude, convenience and comfort are high on my list of hotel priorities. Fortunately, the NH Collection Bogotá Teleport Royal Hotel, which is a contemporary upscale hotel that is nestled into the beautiful northern section of the Bogotá. This is also where you the longest continental mountain range in the world, the Andes, meets a vibrant business district and surrounding elegant neighbourhoods. The NH spa treatments, expansive suites, and marble bathrooms were truly impressive. With a standard of excellence that is present throughout their spectrum of services, it is no surprise that the recent international praise for the company was celebrated with an opulent gala attended by Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia. The heart of the city’s art scene lies within Bogotá’s first official neighbourhood, La Candelaria. This trendy, bohemian district is defined by its old-world charm and historical relevance. Although I only had one day to roam the cobblestone streets, there are a few must see attractions. Start early at the Museo Del Oro, one of South America’s best museums, with a selection of the largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold art in the world. Perfectly preserved relics are exhibited alongside bilingual descriptions that illustrate the many different cultures that once resided here. On Sundays, entrance is complimentary after 3pm. There is a large artisan market across the street, which I quickly discovered was a mecca for poncho and gift shopping. Bring cash and buy in bulk because the garment quality and prices are incredible. My adventure continued down Calle 11 to the Museo Botero, a free modern art museum that houses an internationally acclaimed collection donated by renowned Colombian artist, Fernando Botero. The space is stunning and peaceful, with garden-lined fountains and art by Picasso,

Monet, Matisse, Dalí, and Botero himself. A trip of this nature would not be complete without an in-depth look into the booming culinary scene of this lively cosmopolitan capital. Within its mountainous landscape, I experienced everything from street food to canapés. Bogotá delivered with both variety and ingenuity. I had the pleasure of watching Top Chef Spain and Master Chef Colombia judge, Paco Roncero, create a series of plates for the Collection Bogotá Teleport Royal Hotel’s gala. He is the newly appointed culinary advisor for the hotel group. My inner foodie was at once spoiled and star struck. His scientific flair for molecular gastronomy has earned him a variety of accolades including a two-Michelin star award. When asked where he would choose to have his last meal on earth, he quickly replied with Andres Carne del Res, which is located just beyond the outskirts of Bogotá. Although it’s a 40-minute drive from the city, the indescribable combination of fine dining and all-night dance club atmosphere was well worth it. Upon arrival, guests are treated to a large shot of aguardiente (direct translation: firewater), Colombia’s national alcoholic drink. My initiation was complete. The restaurant itself is a surreal disco town that seats 2000 people, has a 19-page menu, and is 2.76 miles square. I dined on a selection of small plates and Argentinian steak while costumed entertainers roamed the candlelit alleys and neon dance floors between tables.

Alternately, if you’re looking to keep the party within the downtown district, the Gaira Café Cumbia House is my recommendation for live music and a coastally inspired menu. Owned by popular Colombian singer, Carlos Vives, the piñata filled multi-level restaurant is impressively designed with a stage that hosts an 11-piece house band. Although I thoroughly enjoyed shopping for ponchos, I wasn’t leaving Bogotá without an emerald. The eastern portion of the Andes, between Boyaca and Cundinamarca, is where most Colombian emeralds are mined. I found beautiful, highquality specimens from a mine in Muzo at Don Esteban Joyeros in the Centro Comercial Hacienda Santa Bárbara (conveniently located around the corner from my hotel). The house jeweler had my new ring re-sized within 48 hours, spoke a bit of English, and certified all of his stones. The overall experience was so lovely that I returned with the entire British press team to show them where to purchase their emeralds. The transformation of Bogotá continues to fascinate those willing to push past its somewhat modest exteriors. The mentality of insurgency is no longer. Crime rates continue to decrease as business development booms. In the past five years, the city’s streets have steadily filled with tourists looking to uncover the cultural gems that lie within this urban jungle. With a population almost equal to that of New York City, the contagious buzz of Bogotá is certain to satisfy the senses.
