Hello Gorgeous!

I

t’s SO nice to meet you, 2014! I am one of those people that revel in the start of a new year. It brings promise, and hope and renewed opportunity. Do I make resolutions? I try not to. They almost always end in disappointment. Instead, I focus on a “New Year, New You” plan. The truth is that we never leave a year the same way we entered it. Our lives change, the world around us changes, and no matter what — things happen.

So, for 2014, as I do each year, I set one important and attainable goal in each of the three most important areas of my life — family, career and community. I am blessed with a life that allows me to blend all three: working alongside my husband, and leveraging the power of NICHE to help non-profit organizations and community initiatives. With the expanded talent in NICHE for 2014 that include a new Fashion Editor and two new celebrity writers, our goal for 2014 is singular: to not leave this year the same way we found it, and to help every reader discover their niche.

There’s no one like her and NICHE has her! The incomparable Sandra Bullock talks fears, obstacles and the ‘gravity’ of her life. [ICON — page 14]

The amazing team in the NICHE magazine office has an exceptional year of fashion, beauty and lifestyle planned for you, as well as those one-of-a-kind events that our fans have come to covet. What is your New Year, New You? Whether you are looking to change your style, improve your health or be more active in your community, my wish for you is that the pages of NICHE help you Discover Yours.

Tracey Drake, E D I T O R I N C H I E F publisher@NICHEmagazine.ca I would love to hear from you! Send me an email and tell me what you love best about NICHE and what you do each day to live your best life. You just might end up in the pages of NICHE magazine…

limbing towards the top of the world, into the cool clutches of the Arctic Circle is the Norwegian city of Tromsø. The quaint town stirs memories of beautiful hand drawn books that were the wonder of childhood, where pages were filled with charming jewel toned houses, white washed terrain and puffing chimneys. Isolated and enchanting, the cool climate is no hindrance to the adventurous soul who seeks the Tromsø night sky and the utter brilliance of its Aurora Borealis.

WINTER 2014

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E ? Several theories exist as to the derivation of the word Tromsø; its origin has been debated for centuries by the people of Norway. Most commonly accepted is that the name stems from the Sami word Roamšâs, which translates to uneven or rough.

W H AT T O D O Impossible to miss is the city’s ravishing Arctic Cathedral, reminiscent of a fantastical ice tepee, the structure sits idyllically on a back drop of powder blue sky and snow dipped mountains. Fondly nicknamed “The Gateway to the Arctic”, Tromsø is one of the world’s best places to view the natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights. There are plenty of Northern Light Safaris and nightly visits to Northern Light camps to sign up for. During the day, enjoy some of the superb winter sporting activities, cross country skiing and off-piste skiing are local favourites, or take a cable car to the top of Storsteinen Mountain and scout out the sights from above. There is an abundance of shops to explore with unique and rare finds at the city centre and the local mall. In the evening, there are numerous festivals, cultural events and an unstoppable nightlife.

SANDRA BULLOCK

THE GR AVITY O F

OVERCOMING

A DVERS ITY by Amy Longsdorf | celebrity columnist

I

n Gravity, Sandra Bullock plays a NASA medical engineer stranded in outer space. A collision with space debris puts her and her copilot (George Clooney) out of touch with their damaged ship. For much of the movie, she’s forced to float 375 miles above Earth, struggling to find a way to stay alive. Occasionally, Bullock attempts to talk herself through the situation, which gets more and more harrowing by the minute.

N I C H E lifestyle

Bullock might not know what it feels like to be suspended in outer space but she certainly could relate to her character’s penchant for internal conversations. “Sadly, I’ve learned that I talk to myself all the time,” says Bullock with a laugh. “Not something I’m proud of but I will literally just narrate, ‘do this, get that.’ Right now, I just do it to go through my mental list because I’m very list and detailoriented. When someone starts talking back, we’ll know we have problems.” At the moment, Bullock is problemfree. The actress is coming off the $200-million-grossing The Heat, one of the most successful films of her career. And the 3D Gravity has the makings of a critical and commercial hit. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men), Gravity has already garnered rave reviews during its festival run. Variety described the movie as “a nerve-shredding suspenser, a daring study in extreme isolation, and one of the most sophisticated and enveloping visions of space travel yet realized onscreen.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy was just as enthusiastic, calling the film “the most realistic and beautifully choreographed film ever set in space,” before adding that Gravity is “a thrillingly realized survival story spiked with interludes of breath-catching tension and startling surprise.”

I’m a true believer in karma. You get what you give, whether it`s bad or good.

had to match her movements exactly to Cuaron’s specifications. For some scenes, her limbs were manipulated by the same puppeteers who worked on War Horse on Broadway.

When Cuaron first decided upon the idea of making Gravity, which he co-wrote with his son Jonas, he knew he wanted to be as authentic to the physics of outer space as possible. “It was clear from the get go that the actors were going to be floating in zero gravity,” he says. “We tried to honour zero gravity and zero resistance, meaning that the characters would not only be floating but they would be spinning and stuff. Then just to complicate matters, we also wanted long fluid shots as well. And then we started trying to figure out how to do that.” After originally planning on using a continually plunging jetliner — dubbed “the vomit comet” — which Howard employed on Apollo 13, Cuaron eventually settled on another device to simulate weightlessness. Cuaron and company constructed a 10-foot-by-14-foot cube illuminated by LED lights. Bullock was suspended inside the contraption via a special harness and twelve wires. Computer-operated cameras then swirled around her, making it seem as if she was floating in space. More than once Bullock has used the word “gruesome” to describe the apparatus. “There was some blood and some blisters,” says the actress. “It literally took at least 20 minutes to get into and out of it. [Once I was] harnessed and locked in, I had almost no control over [my movements].” To make matters even more complicated, Cuaron had to map many of his shots out beforehand because so many involved CGI. Bullock then 18

WINTER 2014

“I’d be trying to get my hand here, and it would wind up there,” recalls the actress, 49. “Then I’d have [one of the crew members] going, ‘Uh, Sandy, your hand needs to be right here,’ and there’s like a blister coming, and something is cutting into my leg as [I’m] hanging from this wire.” In the middle of all that Bullock was also trying to deliver a performance. “The puppeteers are maybe swinging your legs up but you could have all the emotion you wanted, if you could find it, coming out of your face,” says Bullock. “It was like I had to match [my body] physically and timing-wise [to Cuaron’s preplanned visions] but everything [in my face] needed to be completely new and organic.” Cuaron has nothing but praise for what the actress was able to achieve under such extreme conditions. “The truth of the matter is that Sandra trained so much and rehearsed so much that when we were shooting, we would rarely discuss the technical aspect. Sometimes I would say, ‘Can you reach a little higher?’ but most of the time, we were just talking about performance and emotion. That was her constant concern and preoccupation.” Gravity came to Bullock at a time when she was, ironically, eager to take a break from Hollywood. Following her Oscar win for The Blind Side, she underwent a messy, very public split from her husband, reality TV star Jesse James. She was also in the process of adopting her son, Louis, who’s now three. With the exception of a small role in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Bullock had been away from acting for almost three years when Cuaron flew down to the actress’s home in Austin, Texas to discuss Gravity. (Even though it came out first, The Heat was shot after Gravity.)

Cuaron says Gravity is about overcoming adversity and that during that first meeting with Bullock, they spoke of almost nothing else. “When Sandra and I met for the first time, we talked about [adversity] in life,” notes the filmmaker. “Our connection, before we even began talking creatively, was about life. We had an understanding about big things in life. That was part of the process, at least for me.” While Bullock was originally reluctant to go back to work, she wound up saying yes to Cuaron. “I had such envy of this movie but I didn’t know how it was going to work,” says Bullock. “Then if it was going to work, I wondered, ‘what do I have to offer?’ I didn’t know. But Alfonso knew in his head what he wanted to say.” Initially, Bullock says she was terrified about having so few tricks to rely upon. “I think every actor will tell you that they’re always panicked about conveying something with the least amount of crutches,” explains the actress whose movies like Speed, While You Were Sleeping and The Proposal have racked up $3.5 billion at the box-office. “If all you have are your eyes and your face, you just have to feel it truthfully.” Over the course of filming, Bullock came to rely on Cuaron unconditionally to help guide her performance. “I remember I’d keep going, ‘Alfonso, it doesn’t feel right, it doesn’t feel truthful,’ and he

would stop everything. The technicians would go, ‘Oh God.’ “And then a lot of times, you think that you’re emoting something and he’d go, ‘No, we didn’t see anything’ and I’d go, ‘But it was there!’ “I just had to trust in what Alfonso saw because I saw nothing, I heard nothing. There was blackness everywhere. I had Alfonso in my head [via an earpiece] and I just had to trust that. If he didn’t get what he needed that day, he would say something. Then I would just dig deep. It’s a weird profession but you just have to unscrew your head and forget what you’re feeling and screw on this other head of what [your character] is going through. And sometimes you have to go, ‘Wow. That’s not a pretty place to live all day.’ But you do it.”

EYEWEAR IS NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL Drugstore reading glasses seem inexpensive now but without a professional eye exam, you may be masking a treatable eye condition or preventable sight disorder. The truth is… you may end up paying dearly down the road. Ready-made, off the shelf eyewear is one size fits all. The prescription is the same for everyone, and the location of the optical centre of the lenses is not customized for your eyes. Your eyes are for life. Schedule a routine eye exam. Invest in glasses with lenses custom created for you.

hange is a good thing. Although, oftentimes, when it comes our way, we don’t expect it, we defy it and sometimes even fear it. But there is one time of the year when we all invite change and vow to make ourselves better than before and that is when the New Year is upon us. Every New Year allows us the opportunity to reflect on who we’ve become, what we’ve become and how we can make improvements in ourselves and our lives. Promises, promises! We all make them and particularly this time of year, we have every good intention of keeping them. Yes, I am talking about the proverbial, New Year’s resolution! How many times have we heard, “I’m quitting smoking”, “I’m going to start a new exercise routine”, “I’m going to take up a new sport”? The list goes on and on, but how many of us truly keep our word to ourselves? If we are going by my personal statistics, not very often. So, over the years I have made my own adjustment to the New Year’s resolution by modifying it to things that are achievable and that will make a difference not only in my life, but in the lives of others. This works much better for me, because honestly the pressure I put on myself with that infamous “resolution” is just too much!

So this year, for 2014, I decided that I am going to be more organized. Don’t get me wrong, I am not the most disorganized person on the planet, but when it comes to my time and the proper way of organizing it, I am a bit of a failure. I realize more now than ever, that the busier I have been, the more neglectful I have become. Neglectful mostly of the people in my life who need me the most. I can’t tell you how many times lately, I’ve put my children off to answer business calls, or my family members whom I’ve owed a telephone call back for weeks, or a few of my dear friends that have been asking me for a get-together for months! That’s right, it is time to wake up and smell the roses and get my act together! I absolutely 100 percent know that my children, family and friends are the most important people in my life and without them I would be a lonely mess, so why is it I find myself this past year neglecting my favourite people? Too many things on my plate and a need to organize my time. So, as much as I could perhaps make that vow this new years to exercise more or cut down on my love of wine, my resolution is to start the year off by being more cognizant of the people who mean the most to me in my life and, by doing this, we all win. Happy New Year Everyone!

Just as you can’t get a mobile home in the garage, sometimes that dining set won’t get into the new dining room. You really have to maximize the closet space so that it will work for you and provide suitable storage. There is generally a bunch of vertical space in that closet that may get wasted if you don’t use it. Have a closet organizing company help to tackle that project. We have worked with a bunch of them and in the end it is worth every penny for the function they will bring to your life. Next have a look at the rooms you have available to you and decide what the function of the room is going to be. The sofa might also need to be a bed, or have storage drawers but “just for sitting” isn’t acceptable. A coffee table can also double as a dining table and a desk because of multi height adjustments. A foot stool may also be a storage cube and additional seating for guests. You also want to make great use of the height of the walls. You have far more square footage on the wall than you do on the floor. If you use one wall for a Murphy bed and shelving and let’s say that unit is two feet deep, eight feet long and eight feet tall, that means you have consumed sixteen square feet of floor space and gained one hundred and twenty eight square feet of useable space on the wall.

N I C H E home

When it comes to painting the best thing to do is paint the back of the shelving unit or a recess in the room a warm darker colour and paint the rest of the space in a neutral, light colour. The darker colour in the bookshelves offer the room a sense of depth behind the bookcases or wall unit and features some of your favourite things. The colour palette should be relatively monochromatic in terms of furniture, fabrics and paint colour. When purchasing furniture for your condo make sure you can see under the furniture you buy. If you are able to see more floor space, you will fool the eye in to believing that there is more floor space. Furniture that sits tight to the floor with a skirt or very short legs seem more like a block and less like something floated in the space. It will also help for you to find furniture like the dining table/desk/coffee table that is made of glass and chrome so that it consumes little or no aesthetic space in the room. Occasional tables/ storage might also be made of mirror as the reflective quality of mirror seems to make the item disappear in the space.

USING

We often find that in many condos the space is open concept. If there are several small rooms than opening the space up is often a better choice. You imply that each room is grander and larger because the kitchen visually borrows from the dining room to seem larger, the dining from the living room, etc., and it may be that the furniture you select will also identify the start and end of rooms. When you are looking for those pieces, you also want to be reminded of the reason that you bought the space. Often it will be the view so you want to be sure that you select furniture that doesn’t obstruct that. Lower back heights allow you to see through to the outside and dining furniture with finer legs on the table and chairs helps to maintain that view.

MIRRORS HELPS A ROOM LOOK LARGER 34

WINTER 2014

If you are up for doing more extensive structural work, I highly recommend going with an open concept space to help you feel as though you have a larger space. I would also recommend that you install flat ceilings if you have “popcorn” or a textured ceiling surface. When you have a flat ceiling the space will feel larger and far more elegant. The texture essentially allows for a shadow and light detail which affectively gives the ceiling a colour, and as a result makes the room seem smaller and depressing. The other thing that can really help with the overall feeling of spaciousness and grandeur is to increase the height of the doors. Going up just six inches can make a dramatic affect and if you are doing some structural work already, it is well worth the effort.

THROW CUSHIONS MAKE A S PA C E F E E L WA R M A N D HOMEY

Using mirrors can also help the space look larger. There is so much selection with mirrors now, made with different angles, or mosaics, or concentric circles. They are not great to see a clear reflection of yourself, but they do open up the space. In truth, who wants to see their own reflection on a continual basis? The depth angled mirrors add is a great way to imply more space. Even French doors with frosted glass on to bedrooms and bathrooms can help to give the space an open feel. In a smaller space, there is less need for doors to a den or kitchen. Adding texture and detail to the elements, like the sofa, wall paper, lighting and throw cushions, can make the space feel warm and homey. The reality is that home is where you not only hang your hat but also where you hang your heart. If you fill the space with elements important to you from your travels, and maintain a focus on the features of the condo, like a view to the water or city, you will make your space feel like home, no matter what size it is.

WINTER 2014

Channeling the opulence of Saint Petersburg’s Winter Palace, designer Pamella Roland styled her collection with simplistic leather headbands to complement the winter collection. Oscar de la Renta’s feminine aesthetic and heritage influence reflected into a collection of cinched-waist silhouettes accessorized with elongated sleek, cloche style hats. ‘Project Runway’ winner Michelle Lesniak also incorporated a cloche inspired hat into her winter runway collection, which was paired with a chunky knit, bringing a sophisticated edge with extreme individuality. The use of gloves this season is eclectic. From short to long, black to coloured, and leather to knit, designers accessorized down to the fingertips with spins on the classic winter essential. Designer Charlotte Ronson styled with inspiration from 90’s grunge revival with a mod-like twist, using leather and tweed in her collection. Playing on the frosty weather favourite, runway shows saw fingerless styled gloves, finger only gloves, elbow length and unique opera style gloves. Michelle Lesniak Franklin

Wraps can be worn for additional warmth and top designers show that they are a lead accessory when layering a winter ensemble. Designers stay true to their aesthetic while bringing unique takes on the wrap in rich colours and textures. Ralph Rucci used pantone colour Acai, to add opulence and elegance into his winter collection, including a timeless wrap. Fur is no longer just for coats; it has become a statement twist in the story of the season. Vera Wang’s fur stole in her winter collection is a great example of this. Mara Hoffman embodied what a wrap should accomplish, an added personality especially achieved through her choice of leopard print. Paired with a sheer underlay on a monochromatic outfit, Donna Karan brought a sharp, chic edge to her design through the use of a black wrap coat attached to an infinity style fur neck piece. Worn as a shawl or shoulder wrap, Costello Tagliapeitra paired runway looks with knit wraps in warmer fall tones.

WINTER 2014

Wow — winter is upon us and we’re loving every frigid minute!

H

by Colin McAllister & Justin Ryan | design columnists

ey, as relatively new Canadians, we retain a somewhat ‘touristy’ attitude when it comes to snow. Indeed the thought of a few inches overnight has us waking early to take arty pictures of the landscape, while fashioning beautiful snow angels in the glittering white stuff. Blimey, nothing fazes us. Even as the mercury’s descent takes hold, we love relaxing around the bonfire at our cottage, sipping warming coffee and marveling at the clear blue skies and sunshine… brilliantly suspended in, ahem, sub zero temperatures. To counteract the cold, we layer up like Yetis — Gucci snow boots, Roots chunky trousers, Prada shades and the odd (faux) fur coat. Hell mend us, struggling through the elements, looking for all the world like the Kardashians on a ski break, we’re in our element. With ‘layering’ a key trend this season, it’s only right the fashion forward home should follow suit. As we see it, it’s time for cold, one dimensional spaces to lose that clinical feel. Wouldn’t it be nice to cozy things up a little? To add layers of art, rugs, cushions and accessories? Hmm? Each item skillfully selected to provide comfort, interest, texture and depth? Come on, start dreaming of a wonderful touchy, feely environment that perfectly marries your personality with the architecture of your room. Dreamy, huh? We always say that ‘to fail to plan is to plan to fail’. This observed, don’t leave your layered look to chance or you’ll end up with a haphazard, muddled environment. Follow our simple rules and you’ll soon be creating effortless style that transcends accidental placement. Imagine your room as a capsule wardrobe that you fine tune depending on mood, event and season. Hey, dress it up or dress it down, the layered home is here!

N I C H E home

C R E AT E Y O U R B A C K D R O P Decide on a wall colour, or finish, that underpins your entire look. Take note of how your room flows and of where the best place will be to position furniture. Use your chosen colour and feel to suggest your room’s overall style. Doing this will help you create the right mood — Chanel ‘Pour Monsieur’ grey walls, for example, will look classically cool while providing a perfect backdrop for monochrome furnishings. Alternatively, a full size wall of carefully arranged storage, or perhaps a dramatic window, can be just as effective as a backdrop for your layered look. THE MAIN EVENT Consider the focal point piece; this would be the sofa in the living room, for example, or the bed in a bedroom. As the largest element, it will command optimum presence so think carefully about where it’ll be placed to achieve maximum impact. Once sited, figure out the positioning of background and foreground items — a sofa bench plus lamps to the rear of a chesterfield (in living room application) and a coffee table or upholstered ottoman in front. Planning such as this creates a manicured and very layered look. GET THE BALANCE RIGHT Just like fashion, this look is all about balancing plain and pattern, so create a mood board to allow you to plot how different finishes will work. If you choose an ornate wallpaper, analyze how plain elements (like a block coloured sofa, for example) will look when dressed against it. Or, conversely, how a patterned sofa would look on a plain wall. Texture too, is important, a smooth gloss credenza would pop perfectly if set against a textural, matte wall finish. The layered look is all about contrast, not camouflage, so choose items that really stand out. THROUGH THICK & THIN Mix things up with furnishings and accessories in different widths and heights — this practice creates extra interest. Imagine your room as a cityscape with buildings of different sizes coexisting, to create a single overall vision. In short, this means varying the height of occasional tables and lamps for a less regimented look. Symmetry, on this occasion, is best avoided — if you have matching sofa tables, think about how you might use them in different ways; a tall lamp on one, a stack of art books on the other. 54

WINTER 2014

M A K E M O R E O F W H AT Y O U ’ V E G O T If you have a collection of fabulous figurines — or perhaps a grouping of beautiful bowls — don’t just plop them all down at one time and hope for the best. Come on! Instead, learn how to display everything to enhance the beauty of each item. We recently finished our cottage and displayed birch bark rolls on West Coast cedar blocks to create a gallery style feel. Plinths, stands and cloches should all be used to showcase items and increase the impact of each. SAFETY IN NUMBERS Designers love clustering objects in groups of three or five, opting for a tall, medium and small combo that helps create shape and interest. Group items of the same colour, or the same subject theme, to create extra presence. This really is a lesson in the multitude being greater than its parts. We have a grouping of a dozen Jonathan Adler white ceramic sculptures in our Toronto condo; individually they’re perfectly lovely but, as a congregation, they are amazing. THROW A CURVE BALL Whether a yellow vase in a monochrome shower room, a provocative piece of modern art in a heritage home, or a cognac buttoned tufted leather ottoman in a pale floored study — it’s well worth adding something to the mix that will challenge everything else and act as a stand out drama creating feature. F I N A L LY, A D D T H E S M A L L E R L AY E R S Just like seasoning on a salad, or toasted sugar on a fruitcake, a sprinkling of final taste is similarly important in room styling. Use rugs, cushions and throws to add layered comfort and colour, and choose textures that contrast, or enhance, the furnishings they dress. Layer up your bed or sofa by using taller pillows at the rear and smaller ones in front. Then throw in a single accent cushion at the centre to break up uniformity and add impact. There’s only one thing better than a well dressed bed… and that’s chucking all the cushions off, getting in and snuggling down in your comfortable, and beautifully layered, haven!

ays can be spent lazing by a pool, exploring the countryside on camel back, shopping, swimming with whale sharks in the wild, golfing on one of many world class courses, spa-ing, eating at gourmet restaurants, or sitting in the shade sipping fine tequila and watching the world cruise on by. There is only one definite experience that lovers, adventurers, fishers, golfers and families are certain to share in Los Cabos, and that is the graciousness and hospitality of the local people. NICHE magazine was invited by the Los Cabos Tourism Board, and hosted by Esperanza, an Auberidge Resort, for an unforgettable trip to the coastal Mexican city. In all of my travels I have never been struck more by the kindness and warmth of people than I was in Los Cabos. Of course, what makes a spectacular culture and group of locals has much to do with where they come from, and uncovering the historical treasures and many luxuries of Los Cabos, revealed a truly magnificent city.

WINTER 2014

N I C H E travel

The Baja Peninsula stretches over 700 miles from the northernmost city of Tijuana all the way down to Los Cabos. The peninsula slices through the great blue separating the Pacific Ocean from the Sea of Cortez, and is completely detached from mainland Mexico. Located at the very tip of the Baja, Los Cabos curves around the point of land with three distinct regions. The Eastern region, or Eastern cape, is called San José del Cabo, which is connected to the Western cape, Cabo San Lucas, by a stretch of land called The Corridor. While all close to one another, each of the three regions offers a slightly different cultural experience. San José del Cabo has been described as the quieter, older sister to Cabo San Lucas. The streets are lined with colourful buildings, where you can spend quiet days strolling in and out of shops and restaurants. Tradition still prevails in this old cape, and there are plenty of historical sites to explore. Send your partner off for a day of golf and delve into the charming historical district for some incredible sights and rare buys. Enjoy a cool drink in the city’s central plaza, where you can check out city hall and chat with the locals. Make sure to wander over to Catedral de San José, across from the plaza, which has been a significant part of the local community since the early nineteen hundreds.

58

WINTER 2014

If you only have one day to be spend in San José del Cabo I urge you to visit Flora Farm. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, Flora Farm is a lush green oasis that sprawls over 10 acres of exceptionally manicured grounds. The open air Field Kitchen restaurant and the outdoor Farm Bar, serve gourmet organic dishes and delicacies made exclusively from ingredients grown and harvested on the farm. While the restaurant is superb I recommend making reservations to take a private cooking class at the Farm Bar. You will learn all of the secrets to traditional Mexican cuisine while enjoying the farms signature margarita made from their heirloom carrots, the Farmarita. Connecting the Eastern cape and the Western cape along the coastline is the 18 mile stretch of land called The Corridor. For those of you looking for an ultra-exclusive resort experience with superb golfing (and some A-list celeb sightings) this is where to go. While all magnificent in their own right, there will be a resort best suited to your specific travel tastes. One&Only Palmilla offers a secluded, jungle like hideaway with fine restaurants and a divine boutique offering pieces from designers including Christian Louboutin and Stella McCartney. Lovers and honeymooners should look into Las Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood Resort, where a Romance Director will plan unforgettable moments for you and yours.

Travellers seeking a totally revitalizing, health and wellness retreat should consider staying at Esperanza, an Auberidge Resort. Esperanza sprawls majestically across a cliff face with crashing blue waves below and grand views of El Arco (The Arch) in the distance. The spa has been ranked numerous times among the world’s finest and somehow the entire resort carries a delicious lemony, spa aroma. Take a private yoga class and spend the rest of the day lazing by the infinity pool where you’re sure to see some grey whales cruise by in the ocean below.

Travelling to the Western cape we reach the final stop in Los Cabos: Cabo San Lucas. Really, forget relaxing here — there is this invigorating pulse of energy that beats along to the sound of a street side Mariachi band. Cabo San Lucas is the hub of activity and adventure in Los Cabos. There are unlimited watersports to fill your days and a nightlife that is slightly reminiscent of Las Vegas in certain venues. At the heart of the area is the marina, where you will be able to embark on world class fishing, snorkelling and diving adventures, or, if you are feeling particularly romantic, charter a private boat to carry you and your honey to the secluded and breathtaking Lover’s Beach. Head to the marina early one morning to take a glass bottom boat trip to see El Arco — the waters are at their smoothest earlier in the day; later trips are choppy and may leave you wishing you hadn’t enjoyed that afternoon margarita. El Arco is of great significance to Cabo San Lucas because it both marks land’s end, and is the precise point where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet. If watersports aren’t your thing, not to worry, the marina has some great spots to enjoy a cocktail wharf side, try a Mind Eraser (it’s not as scary as it sounds) at the Nowhere Bar and do some people and yacht watching in the sunshine. When you’re ready to catch some air conditioning walk a little further along the marina and pop into Luxury Avenue, where you’ll find the latest and greatest from stores including Cartier, Fendi and Salvatore Ferragamo.

WINTER 2014

Check out The Bahia Hotel if you’re looking to stay in this lively part of Los Cabos. The urban-chic boutique property is located just one block away from Medano Beach — the most popular beach with the most swimmable waters in Los Cabos. Plan to have dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Bar Esquina, which has a spectacular trendy vibe with live music and a delectable menu. Whatever meal you order will firstly be superb, but secondly must be followed with a sipping shot of Guaycura Liqueur de Damiana. The liqueur is made from Damiana, a small shrub with pale green leaves and aromatic yellow flowers native to the Baja region. It is superb for digestion if you eat too much at dinner, and has also long been used as an aphrodisiac in Los Cabos, both of those factors aside, it is a sweet and delicious treat after a meal. If you want to finish your trip off with a bang, venture out for a night on the town in Cabo San Lucas. Cabo Wabo and the Giggling Marlin are classic venues. If you’re in the mood for dancing Mandala is a classy, high end, modern club, with plenty of tourists. For those of you feeling particularly wild and crazy (perhaps if you’ve enjoy one to many shots of tequila) dip into Squid Roe immediately next door to Mandala. It’s a sight to see at the very least with people ranging from 18 to 80 years old dancing salsa on table tops with colourful balloons and bottles of beer in hand. When you leave the beautiful city of Los Cabos, you will undoubtedly miss the sights, the constant lull of the ocean, the lifestyle and above all, the people. Whenever you feel that twinge of longing for this Mexican wonderland, grab a glass, tip some tequila and pour a little of the warmth and culture back into your life.

Tequila: The New Frontier A LOT OF US CRINGE WHEN WE THINK OF TEQUILA; IT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES THAT INVOLVE A YOUNGER YOU AND A TANGLE WITH TEQUILA. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THIS MEXICAN ELIXIR GETS SUCH A BAD RAP. FOR MOST, IT IS OUR YOUTHFUL MALPRACTICE THAT IS TO BLAME, AND NOT THE DRINK ITSELF.

T

by Stuart Brown | wine columnist

equila often gets a hard time because most of our exposure when we were young was through the bulk brands, either in the form of a semblance of a margarita (see gaudy glass dipped in salt) or the straight up, in a shot glass, proceeded by salt on the wrist, followed by a lime wedge. We no longer need to think about tequila as the hangover-inducing swill. Mexico’s signature spirit has grown up into a drink savoured by connoisseurs worldwide. Today’s tequila story starts with an offering of hundreds of high-grade, 100 percent blue-agave (the best quality), boutique choices, such as Gran Patrón Burdeos, Don Julio Real and Milagro Unico. Those that partake wax poetically about tequila’s nuances, starting from bright, citrus notes to rich, earthy, and often complex flavours. Time to put away the shot glasses and bring out the snifters. How did tequila come so far in such a short time? The real journey doesn’t start here... it starts in Mexico. Although the Aztecs had a form of fermented liquid made from the agave plant (previously called pulque), it was not until the late 1500’s that the Spanish settlers had run out of their domestic brandy from the old world and started to turn agave piña into a distilled spirit. Over the years, the production was made by larger family holdings into bulk spirits, but during the 1990’s a transformation towards quality was developed. Larger multinational spirit companies began to buy into the tequila market and looked into both producing better products, but more importantly, sought to educate the world’s consumers on the value of these top quality products. The increase in price and levels of consumption went through the roof.

WINES OF THE MONTH CLUB

Tequila is a special product that has many quality levels that fall into five main categories: Blanco (silver) is the crispest and usually the least expensive, as it isn’t aged. The Joven category that consists of Blanco tequilas that are blended with aged varieties to deepen the flavours. Reposado and Añejo tequilas that are aged in oak barrels. And the newer Extra Añejo category that are long aged, rich and dark tequilas that can compare to premium whiskey bottlings. The best way to experience tequila is to go to Tequila. That’s right, it’s a place. My travels to Mexico were initially for beach and sun exploration, but after a few sunsets, I started looking for a better drink. I was in Puerto Vallarta, on the west coast of Mexico, in the state of Jalisco (where most of the best tequila is from). I started tasting tequila from a few local producers, and I was initially surprised. My quest went farther inland where I found the town of Tequila approximately 3 hours from Puerto Vallarta. Tequila was interesting. Store after store that seemed to have the same products, found in embarrassingly cheesy packaging, all geared towards the tourist market. Outside of Tequila, I found some wonderful tequila houses that had some much better products. But I really was not “wowed” until I got to the city of Guadalajara. About one and a half hours past Tequila, Guadalajara is a beautiful city that boasts amazing Spanish Colonial architecture as well as some of the best tequila shops in the world. I tasted some fine and rare tequilas, some ranging upwards of $90 CAN (a week’s wages for local labour), that were absolutely fantastic... some of the best spirits I have ever tasted. Tasting these tequilas in the Mexican country, with the backdrop of the endless blue-agave plants that grow in the area, was the highlight of my experience in that region. The aqua blue colour was unlike anything I have ever seen — it looked like the hills were waves in the ocean. Time for you to visit and build better tequila memories.

orn in New York City in 1963, Jacobs had a very transitional childhood as a result of his father’s untimely death. With full custody and a continuous battle with mental health, Jacobs’ mother began moving her children around constantly to accommodate the several marriages she was in and out of. Unable to continue with the unpleasant lifestyle, Jacobs opted to move in with his grandmother on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Once settled, Jacobs began constantly searching for ways to bring fantasy into his everyday reality as a young teen.

At 15, Jacob’s journey into the fashion industry began when he started working as a stock boy at the trendy Upper West Side boutique, Charivari. One afternoon while working, Jacobs met famed designer Perry Ellis. After forming a unique friendship, Ellis encouraged Jacobs to apply at the Parsons School of Design.

During his years at Parsons, Jacobs proved himself as an up and coming star and received several awards for his outstanding talent. His first collection of hand-knit, oversized sweaters were sold at Charivari under the label Marc Jacobs by Marc and Barbara (owner of Charivari).

Jacobs caught the eye of Robert Duffy, the executive at Reuben Thomas Inc., who offered him a job. After designing two collections for Reuban Thomas Inc., the company went out of business in 1985. Jacobs and Duffy collaborated as business partners and launched Jacobs’ first signature collection under his own name, Marc Jacobs. After just two short years, Duffy and Jacobs joined the Perry Ellis sportswear label as the President and Vice President bringing innovative ideas to their Womenswear collection. In 1993 Jacobs created a collection called, “Grunge”. Ellis considered the collection to be failure and Duffy and Jacobs were dismissed from the company.

…on the topic of

BEING A PIONEER

I don’t see myself as being as big of an influence as other people seem to think. It’s sometimes said that I’m rebellious and I do things to push people’s buttons, but I just like the challenge. I like to take on the thing I don’t like at the moment. I like to find something that looks wrong or feels off, something that I would never have done in the past, like brocade. And then all of a sudden, if we can make brocade work, then we’ve really done something, because I hate it. And that’s just a reference. I don’t actually hate brocade.

hen you look in your closet, what do you see? Is there a sea of solids and never-ending neutrals? Are you feeling ready to take your style to the next level? Adding patterns is a great way to showcase your fashion sense and add texture and visual interest to your wardrobe. It’s often hard to know where to start, so I suggest choosing a pattern for an area you want to show off and pair it with a dark, solid colour for an area you want to distract from. If you have a thicker torso for example, try patterned pants or a straight skirt paired with a solid top or jacket.

Great patterns T O A D D T O Y O UR WA R D R OBE

Stripes are great for beginners! Try grey and black, navy and charcoal, or cream and white. The result will be less dramatic and easier to layer with other colours and textures.

Check or Gingham is fun for accessories like purses or scarves.

Dots come in many sizes. Small prints are easy to wear and work well with subtle tweed or plaid patterns. Large dots are more dramatic and will draw attention wherever you wear them.

Paisley or floral can be a busier pattern, like plaid, so layer blouses, scarves or ties in these prints with solids.

Houndstooth is fabulous for purses, bags or jackets.

Herringbone is a smaller pattern usually made with wool. It’s easy to layer with lots of other prints like dots or stripes and is ideal with pants or a suit jacket.

MI XI NG P RI NTS CAN CRE AT E A LOT OF I NTERES T I N AN OU TFI T AS LONG AS T HE Y AREN’ T ALL COMP ETI NG F OR AT T E NT ION.

When layering patterns... •

Pair one pattern with bold colours or prints with complimentary smaller patterns.

Focus on complimenting the most prominent colour when putting your outfit together.

Try layering small patterns closer to your body and large or bold patterns the furthest away. For example a small polka dot pattern blouse with a large pattern plaid jacket.

Start wearing patterns slowly to get comfortable and then try to really mix it up. You have my permission to break your own pattern rules. In fact, this year,

I dare you to! 72

hen did the kitchen start taking priority over every other room in your house? And, why is the kitchen such a valuable piece of real estate? Well, to answer those simply, I would have to say it was perhaps around the time when formal dining became more casual and the breakfast table began serving as an office desk, homework area and meeting room. It was also around the time when your kitchen island became the buffet serving station, the cocktail platform and most likely the first spot your guests gather around upon their arrival. I’d say the kitchen is a pretty impressive space and making it functional is paramount. Meeting with new clients means we discuss ways to incorporate form and function without losing the desired “look”. It often surprises our clients how many bad decisions were made on their original kitchen that ultimately resulted in an outdated, unattractive and sometimes even unusable space. Our goal is to always design timeless interiors while catering to our client’s needs, and creating efficient, comfortable and beautiful kitchen spaces. Where to start? Avoiding costly mistakes at the beginning will save you money, heartache and time in the long run. Keeping these few pointers in mind may be invaluable to your project.

N I C H E home

IT’S NOT E V E R Y D AY YOU REDESIGN OR REMODEL YOUR KITCHEN SO WHEN Y O U F I N A L LY GET THERE — D O I T R I G H T, ADDRESS THE FUNCTIONALITY AND KEEP IT TIMELESS. THIS IS THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR YOUR PERFECT KITCHEN.

First and foremost, don’t obstruct access to the kitchen triangle. Professionals will refer to the sink, stove and refrigerator as the “working triangle”, the area of greatest activity. Of the three, the sink will see the most action and therefore needs to be installed in close proximity to major appliances and a flat workspace. Regardless of kitchen size or layout, the distance of a work triangle should not be less than ten feet and not greater than twenty-five feet. Doesn’t that sound simple? Well, the reality is we’ve come across plenty of workstations where the sink is located too far from the fridge to remove groceries and have them washed within seconds. The sink and dishwasher should also be as close to the dish cabinet/storage as possible.

STORAGE

The most important factor when designing a kitchen. Don’t waste storage space or overlook it. Kitchens typically contain lots of “stuff ”. Finding a home for your kitchen equipment while keeping it easily accessible can be a tricky proposition. One big design mistake is not including enough storage. That can mean accommodating small appliances or pullouts for the everyday necessities. If the kitchen is small, consider installing extra long upper cabinets for additional vertical storage. It may not be used everyday but it will accommodate those appliance manuals, your special occasion china or those party platters you may only need once or twice a year. If you do not have enough storage it won’t matter how much you’ve invested into your finishes, the kitchen will undoubtedly feel smaller than it is, as you will constantly be trying to find more space solutions.

78

WINTER 2014

LIGHTING

Every room in your home needs sufficient light. However, the kitchen is a top contender, it is the one area where you cannot afford to have poor lighting. The kitchen requires task and ambient lighting, as well as overall illumination. You especially should evaluate the work areas and focus on how you can provide each spot with the light it needs. Consider adding lighting directly above all the main working areas such as under-cabinet lighting to ensure that the counters have sufficient illumination for common kitchen tasks. After all, the more light you have in the room, the better you can show off all of those design elements you’ve added to the space. Imagine designing the perfect kitchen and having it hidden by darkness.

THE PERFECT BACKSPLASH WILL DO W H AT D R O P E A R R I N G S O R T H AT S TAT E M E N T N E C K L A C E W O U L D D O T O THE SIMPLEST OF BLACK DRESSES.

With so many options and opportunities to create the ideal kitchen there is an equal amount of chances to make costly mistakes. Not addressing your needs with a professional may be one of those. Designers can get you going, start you off with a dynamic plan, assist you with identifying your specific necessities and translate them into perfect details. They also may be the ones who dazzle your kitchen with that flawless backsplash; it is inevitably the jewelry to your kitchen.

air stylist, makeup artist, stylist, trainer, nutritionist, management — each team member contributes their specialty, and endless hours, to present a superstar, designed to dazzle society and make us fall in love. WINTER 2014

For the dramatic nature of costuming, Toybina has a fascinating honesty to her work. Her designs are inspired by the artists as people, Toybina explains, “when you’re dealing with anybody who’s trying to find or create their image, you have to be inspired by who they are as people first.” She focuses on building a relationship with the artist and their music, to design an imaginative representation of who they are. Toybina began her career with a ready-to-wear line called GLAZA which slowly began taking on a more avant garde feel. The move into costuming for music was what she describes as “a natural progression.” Toybina has always been passionate about music, and it has always been a driving force for her, she expresses that, “it seemed like the perfect marriage to go into music.” It would be impossible not to be immediately struck by Toybina’s gracious and modest attitude given the tremendous success she’s had in her career. “There have been so many incredible moments where I just stop and catch my breath for a moment and am so grateful for every opportunity that has come along.” Just launching into her third year as the costume and wardrobe designer for The X Factor, Toybina’s future dreams are set on moving into designing costumes for motion pictures, before bringing her career full circle and ending back where she began, designing ready-to-wear.

OVER THE YEARS, MARINA HAS DESIGNED COSTUMES FOR AN IMPRESSIVE LIST OF CELEBRITIES: Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Dita Von Teese, Kirsten Dunst, Eminem, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Dido, Eve, Paris Hilton, Carrie Underwood, Miley Cyrus, Pink, Eliza Dushku, Liam Hemsworth, Sean White, Britney Spears, Adam Lambert, Juliette Lewis, Tina Majorino, Lil’ Kim, Cherie Currie, Selena Gomez, Usher.

Jane,

Dear

New Year, New You, NEW LOVE!

by Jane Carstens | relationship columnist

Whether you’re the type of person who makes resolutions or not, the New Year is a great time to have an honest look at yourself and commit to changing dating habits that haven’t been working. I’ve put together a list of four areas where you might like to start taking stock. DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER — We’ve all done it: dismissing a potential match for superficial reasons in hopes of finding someone we’re instantly attracted to. Unlike the movies, those love-atfirst-sight men are often the very ones we should avoid like the plague. Many women have what I like to call a “broken picker” and just like the old song, are looking for love in all the wrong places. Women don’t seem to realize that many men are extremely nervous on first dates. It takes time to actually get to know the REAL guy. So, this year, give someone not on your radar a chance. Go out on a date. Maybe a few dates. You might be surprised at the outcome.

J A N E C A R S T E N S is a sought-after dating and relationship expert. Through her matchmaking service, Matchmaker for Hire, Jane and her team specialize in personally matching sincere singles in meaningful relationships.

ONLINE STALKING — For better or worse, Googling before a first date is standard practice nowadays. This doesn’t mean you should try to find out as much as possible about a person before the first meeting. A little mystery is a good thing. Draw the line at social media networks and never add someone to yours too quickly. Why would you send or accept a friend request before you’ve even exchanged phone numbers? Plus, pictures of attractive strangers and posts about weekend getaways will only feed your insecurities. Learning about a person one-on-one will always give you more insight than what they choose to share with friends and acquaintances online. GET OUT THERE! — Finding the person who’s right for you can be hard work, so there’s something to be said for making it more fun by doing things you already love to do. From there, confidence and attractiveness are a natural byproduct. Have your own life. Don’t wait to do things with a partner, do them by yourself or with friends. And don’t clear your schedule to accommodate a date. Having a full calendar is attractive, and will prevent you from appearing needy. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION — Stay alert in your day-today life. Already doing this with little success? Switch it up! People are creatures of habit, which works against you in the dating world by limiting your options and exposure. Make your dating pool bigger by taking a different route to work, getting your groceries at another store, walking the dog in a different park or buying your morning java someplace new. Maybe your future mate gets his wakeup cup at the café across the street from your Starbucks. Keep in mind that even the most open and self-aware person may have trouble recognizing their own bad dating habits. If you can, consult a trusted friend, a dating coach or even a trusted ex (no, really!) to help you chart a clearer path in 2014. Happy New Year and happy dating!

MAYBELLINE by Sharrie Williams | celebrity columnist

An excerpt from Maybelline founder, Tom Llye Williams’ niece, Jane Allen’s diary, while she and her cousin Annette Williams, visited her uncle’s Villa Valentino in Hollywood, right before the start of World War II. Friday, June 14, 1940 Slept late as we didn’t get to bed until late. It seems we don’t find much time to spend at the pool these days. Took a long ride to Beverly Hills and the Bel Air section to see the homes of the movie stars. The old Buster Keaton home was impressive in all its grandeur. Saw Pickfair, which reeked of wealth. Loretta Young’s home was very lovely, but we had to catch a glimpse very quickly as the small space at the front gate is the only opening from the drive to the house. The shrubs and trees almost hide the house. Jane Withers had a lovely home. Of course, we saw hundreds of potential homes and most of them belonged to stars, but we didn’t know which home belonged to which star. Had dinner tonight at the Beachcombers. The food was all different from any we have eaten before, but delicious. Had a Gold cocktail before dinner, which set the dinner off fine. I had never tasted a Gold before. It is a rum drink, delicious, but powerful and served only at the Beachcombers. This spot is very attractive, all South Sea Island decorations. After dinner we went to Olvera Street, which is the oldest section of Los Angeles, all Spanish and Mexican. The little shops are all right on the street, and reminded me very much of Jaures, Mexico. Tom Lyle bought some perfumed candles for mother and Aunt Frances. We saw people in the shop making candles. In other shops we had our handwriting analyzed, our palms read and caricatures done of Annette and me.

S H A R R I E W I L L I A M S is the heir to the Maybelline legacy, Tom Lyle Williams’ great-niece and Evelyn Boecher Williams’ granddaughter. Growing up in their homes, and steward of the vast Maybelline archives, Williams tells the story of the birth of the Maybelline empire and reveals intimate details about the fascinating family dynasty. Throughout 2013, NICHE invited Sharrie to give readers an inside look into this beauty empire – sharing excerpts from her book, The Maybelline Story, available online at Maybellinebook.com.

88

WINTER 2014

Monday, June 17, 1940 We drove to Pasadena to see a sketch of Tom Lyle’s new car. The artist for Packard had sketched it on a blackboard, actual size, to give Tom Lyle an idea of dimensions. Believe it will be some sporty job. The car will be a long convertible, four or five passenger, cream with red leather upholstering. From the sketch it looks as if this will be the best looking and most unusual car Tom Lyle has had. We spent the afternoon waiting for Tom to get all details settled, and stopped at a drive-in for a sandwich, then rushed home to dress for Earl Carroll’s.

Another big night. Tom Lyle and Arnold dressed in tuxedos again and we wore formals. I decided to wear false eyelashes and felt like one of the glamour girls. Evelyn and Bill went with us to Earl Carroll’s, so there were six in the party until around eleven when Emery joined the crowd. Earl Carroll’s beautiful night club is much larger than Ciro’s, with a stage away from the tables for dancing. We all had a turn at dancing, but Annette and Arnold did the Conga with the crowd. The rest of us were sitting at the table and enjoyed the entertainment. Had a couple of daiquiris around the table and dinner at ten or ten thirty. The floor show here was gorgeous with loads of beautiful girls. The stage was revolving, so there were many unusual arrangements in dance. Bert Wheeler was master of ceremonies. Left Earl Carroll’s around two, took Evelyn and Bill home, but didn’t get to bed until around four in the morning. The moon was beautiful when we got home, and Tom Lyle turned on all the flood lights in the garden. With the fountain, lights, flowers and moon, the garden was gorgeous.

Hydration by Sara Rose | beauty columnist Welcome winter with open arms and comfortable skin. The temperatures are dropping, indoor heaters are being turned up, and warm wool is the cozy covering of choice. We often forget that as the seasons change, our skin care regime needs to change also. For instance, did you know that summer skin systems can hinder moisture recovery in the dry winter months? It’s true!

Your skin needs water The experts battle back and forth as to whether water really improves the look and overall health of your skin. At the very least, know these two facts: 1

Your skin is an organ, and is made up of cells. Skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, your organs cannot function optimally.

2 When you’re dehydrated, your skin becomes dry, flaky and tight

looking. Dry skin has reduced resilience and is more prone to wrinkles.

WINTER 2014

Unfortunately, most of us begin our day with some seriously dehydrating indulgences. Sipping on a morning coffee before taking a long, hot shower may sound luxurious, but what it’s really doing is stripping moisture and lustre from your skin. Instead, try a cooler shower for a shorter period of time – your skin will thank you for it! The combination of hot water and soap does remove dirt, but also breaks down the moisture barrier. Watch for telltale signs of dehydration when you step out of the shower such as shrivelled “pruned” fingers or red skin tone. Once your shower is done, don’t towel off aggressively – this is not the time for exfoliation. Have your moisturizer and serum close at hand, pat dry (leaving a little dampness behind), and begin gently massaging lotion into your still-open pores to lock moisture in.

Common sense for winter skincare Increase daily water intake. Drinking water is much like indulging in the fountain of youth. Water not only quenches your thirst, it also hydrates your body from the inside out. The recommended daily intake of water is eight glasses or one gallon. This may seem overwhelming or simply not possible, but, alas, there are ways of substitution. Instead of sipping on dehydrating coffee, why not try herbal tea or hot water with fresh lemon? Pay attention to your fruit and vegetable intake, both food groups are wonderful sources of hydration. For the most part, thicker ‘extra hydrating’ moisturizers sit on top of the skin, trapping in the dead cells, which doesn’t reduce dryness, it only increases skin dullness. Making daily use of a serum beneath the moisturizer offers extra absorption and brilliance to your skin.

owever you take your coffee, that favourite beverage is telling of your personality! Well, at least according to the new book You Are Why You Eat: Change Your Food Attitude, Change Your Life by psychologist Ramani Durvasula. The book details a survey that studied 1,000 coffee drinkers, connecting coffee choices to specific personality traits. Survey participants were given common daily occurrences such as waiting in line, planning a dinner party or making weekend plans. For each situation, they were asked how they typically manage each situation, and how they drink their coffee. Here is a tall version of the venti story... with a little fun stirred in for good measure!

What’s your coffee personality? espresso

You’re friendly and adaptive. You actually like the taste of coffee, a rare, but admirable trait.

double espresso

You’re practical and hard-working. You like knowing that one shot just doesn’t do it for you anymore.

triple espresso

You’re enthusiactic, but obsessive. You’ve been awake since the late 90’s.

mocha

You’re fun-loving and creative. You hate the taste of coffee, but you need the pick-me-up, so you improvise.

latte

You’re reflective, but often indecisive. In a world of unknowns, you like the safe pick.

cappuccino

You’re warm-hearted, but oblivious at times. Your friends have to remind you to wipe foam off your lip.

macchiato

You’re traditional and reserved, but for the most part, you hate foam moustaches.

americano

You’re calm and conscientious. You enjoy the simple things in life, like picnics in the park, birds chirping, and watery coffee.

iced coffee

You’re assertive and outspoken. You don’t let seasons dictate how you live your life. Also, you like straws.

frappuccino

You’re happy and energetic. You claim to love coffee, but really, you just love ice cream.
