Growing up in country NSW, Architecture felt like a thing of fiction, movies and sitcoms - experienced through the role of George Costanza’s alter ego “Art Vandelay”. In moving to Melbourne to commence my bachelor’s degree in Architecture at Swinburne University of Technology it would grow into a passion, an obsession and a lifestyle. My studies at Swinburne afforded me opportunities to become involved in many experiences. Working in a small team of students under the academic guidance of Canchui Chen and Aurecon, I led as the head of construction and fabrication on the “Fabpod II” meeting room, the challenges of this workshop critically taught me the importance of problem solving and physical prototyping. Throughout Covid I was fortunate enough to secure full-time work in a professional Architectural practice, Regional Design Service, where I have now been for over a year. An invaluable experience, I’ve been able to develop and strengthen my skills through practical experience, which has included delivering documentation, design development, as well as engaging closely with clients at all stages of a project. Moving forward with the ambitions of developing my career through academic and professional means, I look forward to working with and for communities; encouraging curiosity of the design world, and shaping the everyday interests and surrounds of the public through thought-provoking design.

Professional Work Regional Design Service
Moving into the Professional Industry working at Regional Design Service over the past 12 months has allowed me to partake in many diverse projects. Including residential, commercial, Public and Community engagement exercises. Below I show some of the highlights as I developed my spatial knowledge and the technical components through the aid of Revit, the Adobe Suite & Rhino this involved in resolving construction details and bringing forward solutions.

Koi
Architectural Design Studio 2 (Construction)
Team: Nicholas Aylward, Eddy Jameler De Leon, Shengye Yu Studio Leader: Canhui Chen Koi is the digital and physical development of a pavillion design set within the campus of Swinburne University of Technology (pg. 8). With the use of computational design, Koi attempts to show how physical structures can be influenced, aided, and instructed by the digital world. Materials and construction methods were tested to find the most suitable match to parameters of the digital model.
A basic frame system was made both digitally and physically to prototype materials and geometries. Parametric data was transfered to material dimensions, laser cut polyester, and laser cut plywood. Prototypes 1 & 2 (pg. 9) display the physical realisation of these models. Prototype Computational Development

Fabpod II
Professional Internship
Team: Anes Abdou, Nicholas Aylward, Eddy Jameler De Leon, Tirin Nayak, Amy Nuccio, Ralph Santos Internship Supervisor: Canhui Chen
The Fabpod II involved developing an innovative design to produce a state of the art acoustic meeting room. My responsibilities included construction processes, development, and techniques for the construction of the built form. This consisted of using techniques through research, development, and prototyping to ensure an efficient solution.
I was involved in developing these processes in a real world situation, and with my team, brought a prototyped 1:1 section of the FabPod II to realization within the Aurecon office.
Fabpod II render in office environment at Aurecon
The FabPod II was designed with acoustics as the primary drive thus implementing acoustic paneling and hyperbolic oculus cones brought many challenges. In order to create a seamless exterior an ABS & recessed bolt mechanism was developed to connected the hyperbolic oculus cone with the lightweight frame.

Swinburne Station
Architectural Design Studio 5
Team: Nicholas Aylward Studio Supervisor: Dr Ian Woodcock Studio 5 saw the redevelopment to provided much needed space for the ever growing university and community while also adding opportunity to wasted zone surrounding Glenferrie Station. The site was analysed while also including Booroondara council and Swinburne University masterplans to ensure adequate additions could be included in the design development phase. Seen below in red is the sites boundaries.
Swinburne Station was broken into 5 key precincts to allow more indepth spacial design control. It was vital to ensure current infrastructure can benefit by the incorporation and connection to new developments, with this a practical community campus could be created removing the corridor like feeling of the current site.

As Swinburne University expands new facilities are required the drawing below shows the necessary new inclusions with basic floor layouts equating to a total of 24,500 SQM. It was vital in the design process to not only meet university needs but to do so in a way that adds value and beneficial services to the community.

Professional Practice 1:BIM (Building Information Management)
Team: Nicholas Aylward, Matthew Tagle, Dang Duy Minh Huynh Studio Leader: Sergio Sotelo, Mehrnoush Latifi Khorasgani Professional Practice 1:BIM explores the complexity of the construction industry, the roles of different stakeholders, various production methods, and the distribution and management of information. This was shown through the development and testing of a energy efficient fascade system. We noted that the high variety of uses within AMDC would benefit from an adaptable system. With this as the main drive we developed the use of a paneling system, incorporating thermal analysis to assist in the quantity, shape, size and arrangement needed. The diagrams on page 29 show how an adjustable system could occur along different times of the day dependent on the suns location. We noted the importance of a highly adaptable multipurpose system for the AMDC building in order to maximize the outcomes of these uses we settled upon The use of a paneling system, this permits a high range of flexibility from an almost complete sun blocking arrangement to rain collection, cooling, harnessing solar energy and natural lighting.

Woodwork & Models Personal
Throughout my undergraduate studies and free time I like to enjoy my hobby of woodwork. Using many Australian and international timbers, I seeked influence from many design areas while also trying to allow the wood to portray its own natural beauty.
