Corridor to Campus

Corridor to Campus With the task of redeveloping Glenferrie station to be more university centered, I noted the key aspects that required change and looked at the current infrastructure merely as a site of high flowing foot traffic. The station should be known for its heritage infrastructure and multicultural surrounding facilities, but these features are easy to overlook and be seen as outdated due to the low economy of space and lack of modern facilities. I saw this project as an opportunity to change this. The main goals I hoped to achieve included: adding some modern facilities for a growing university, giving a revision and revival to the old dark infrastructure, adding value to the university and the community, and creating a new space and face for Swinburne University to call its own. While all this takes place, it is also crucial to ensure that the revisions do not destroy the heritage and surroundings of the station, but instead compliments them. 2

Melbourne Metro
It is vital to have an efficient and reliable transport infrastructure in Melbourne as there can be up to 220 trains carrying over 450,000 customers daily. I tested the efficiency and reliability by going on a round-trip journey showcasing the many modes of transport available. Shown here is a journey beginning at a residential address, to Glenferrie station, to Carnegie station, to Glen Waverley station, to Box Hill station, and finally returning back to Glenferrie station.

Existing sites and Mapping Figure ground maps are an efficient tool to identify one’s surroundings and removes unnecessary information to display a basic and useful map, showing public accessible space from the inaccessible. Research was done on a local arcade/ plaza, a city block, and a train station of selection to grasp space, scale and knowledge of past examples. I also learned the sizing and capabilities of the local Glenferrie site.
The master site (right) is of a Swinburne centered area, bounded by Glenferrie Rd, Burwood Rd, Park St and William St. This will continue to be the site of future development and a more in-depth analysis.
10
Block Arcade
Situated of Elizabeth St in the Melbourne CBD, completed in 1893, shows some of Melbourne’s most popular heritage attractions including mosaic tiles and a large, open atrium.
City Block
Surrounded by Swanston St, Elizabeth St, Collin St and Little Collin St, iconically brings some of Melbourne’s best known architecture together with sprawling laneways, live bustling streets, and many boutique shops.
World Trade Station
Completed in 2016, also known as the Oculus, chosen due to its colossal scale. It was an interesting opportunity to see how it would fit within another context. Implementing the idea of its many underground passageways in future projects could be highly beneficial. 11
With the World Trade Centre station placed into a new context, it is interesting to note how much space would be created.
A chance to add the Block Arcade to a focal point of Glenferrie Rd and Burwood Rd would be interesting to see an additional retail space added to an already busy center.
Similar to the CBD block, the focused site had many in-between spaces, and looked to fit in comfortably within the Glenferrie area.
12
At a chance to see a unique combination, the three study areas were combined to show a multipurpose addition to the site.
13
Hawthorn
The suburb of Hawthorn is greatly known for its many dining and retail options along Glenferrie Rd with Swinburne University sitting between Burwood Rd, Williams St and Park St, catering for 15,000 full-time students. As the area grows in popularity and infrastructure, there will be an increasing strain put on the local PTV network.

Glenferrie Station Glenferrie Station was first opened in 1882 and now serves over 2.7 million passengers annually. It currently has three platforms and is situated just off Glenferrie Rd in the suburb of Hawthorn, which is known for its many retail and hospitality options. The main northern structure situated on Don Arcade, the central building, and the surrounding coverage are heritage listed. With its consistent high rates of traffic generated from Glenferrie Rd and Swinburne University it is vital that additional infrastructure is built in the coming years to keep up with this ever growing demand.
18
19
EXISTING CONDITIONS To understand Glenferrie as a site, it was crucial to acknowledge its current state. In an in-depth analysis, the station was measured, diagrammed, and 3D digitally documented. In doing so, there was a better understanding about what is currently there and what could be there in the future.

Corridor to Campus With the growing need for added infrastructure at Swinburne University and Glenferrie station, the opportunity to work on a project to improve such factors came as a chance to challenge what can become. Developing over 23,400sqm of new programs, yet also attempting to add convenience and comfort while enhancing the current heritage structures came as a complex task. I used my previously developed skills and knowledge while also applying them to local context to create something new, and hopefully, inspiring to future metro development projects.

MASTER BREAKDOWN
Reading the Swinburne University and Boroondara council’s master plans allowed me to see what changes needed to be achieved for future growth. With this, some key points were taken (below) and added to with personal interventions (right) that were more specific to the redevelopment project. • Focus growth opportunities around Telstra tower and local underutilized carparks. • Improve heritage/ setback rules to protect loved local infrastructure. • Increased connection of transport through New Space Required by 2022 interchange at Glenferrie Station. • A safer and more attractive local street environment with added interventions throughout. • Improved open spaces with widened footpaths and new street connection options. • Improved council services and facilities. 26
Intended Interventions •
Increased frontage and open spaces.
•
Increased transport access points.
•
A vibrant destination rather then corridor.
•
Added interventions for increased foot traffic.
•
Light filled modern real estate and opportunities
•
welcoming, comforting & inviting
•
A modern, sustainable space for a growing community

PRECEDENTS
Throughout the development and design process, precedents were looked to for inspiration to get an idea for materials and concepts. I hoped to create a design that not only flowed throughout, but also displayed beauty and held a sense of connection to the current existing infrastructure.

5 Key Areas Breaking the site into five key areas allowed for a more in-depth detailed focus, creating intimate design elements to form a scene that can be imagined clearly. I looked at the details of the design to show how the current infrastructure and surrounding buildings connected with the new programs. The five areas were selected and divided in relation to their purposes. Shown to the right is the 5 areas within site context.

Site Development With the addition of new infrastructure, drastic changes to the local site was to occur. Figure ground maps (below) show the current and future sites. A key part to improving the site was adding passageways to distribute the traffic load in the densely packed space. The purpose of adding large open floor spaces was to create a more light filled and comfortable floor plan. Shown to the right is an updated floor plan map showing the additional infrastructure and current surrounding Swinburne University buildings. (not to scale)
34
35
Mid Point’s main priority was to optimize the use of empty space while creating an open front for light vibrant spaces. The open front also allowed for in and out traffic to walk easily through the space while showcasing Swinburne University to the local community. Some of the facilities included are: Glenferrie Rd front plaza for general inquiries Added underpasses & Eastern platform access Widened footpaths for increased foot traffic Refurbishment of heritage infrastructure
36
MID POINT
37
West End was seen as an opportunity to give back to the community by adding much needed retail shops while also providing an entrance point to the station straight off Glenferrie Rd. This grants a seamless transfer, which is currently lacking. Some of the facilities included are: Bike locked storage Tram stop Added islands, crossing and widen footpath for more friendly pedestrian use Improved bike lanes Lift access to all platforms
38
WEST END
39
The Lane ways are an overlooked space due to its high traffic flow. I saw this as a chance to liven up the surroundings of the station with small, yet powerful interventions. Some of the facilities included are: Repurposed heritage arches and facade Widened footpaths Improved entryways and added access points Increased grass area and mature trees Rear SPW road removal for more pedestrian safe space

The Council car park was an opportunity for new built forms and has the potential to serve as a new showcase space. The area permitted for maximum heights that could add to Swinburne facilities and improved the ugly dreaded “inbetween zone. Some of the facilities included are: Park lands adjacent to laneway Courtyard to create open campus facilities Student residents and multi level mixed use facilities Improved Don Arcade infrastructure with more suitable modern interventions.
