VIKING VOICE November 2013
PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME and MESSAGE- - Terry Bennett As winter draws near and the Holiday Season fast approaches it is even more critical for our students to stay on top of their academic work. Continue to encourage your student to attend to their studies, utilize the more than 70 minutes of tutorial time each week and seek additional support and help from each of their teachers. I am convinced that when the adults involved in our student’s lives make education a priority it sends a strong message that education is valued. As a parent, it isn’t always easy to know exactly what my teenager is doing or how they might doing in school. I have found one of the best ways to discuss school and their studies isn’t to ask about homework, but rather have them share with you what they learned in school that day or what they have been learning in each of their classes. You can regularly monitor your student’s academic progress via the Home Access system. Each student has a Home Access code. If you do not have your student’s codes please give our Counseling Office a call and Mrs. Kinnan will be happy to provide it for you. You can find the Home Access system by going to the school district website www.kcsd.k12.or.us - it is located on the upper left-hand side of the webpage. Feel free to e-mail your student’s teachers, counselor, myself, or one of my administrators. Mazama High School is privileged to have caring, active and involved parents who encourage their children to reach their potential. Our dedicated and professional staff is here to help your student achieve this goal If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call. We invite our parents to go online and take our food service survey….it on the district website

IMMUNIZATION REMINDER Oregon law requires 7th – 11th grade students to have 1 dose of Tdap vaccine. An appropriate medical or religious exemption is also acceptable. Please check your child’s records to be sure he/she has had the Tdap vaccine and that the school has a record of it. Tdap offers adolescents and adults protection against three serious diseases: Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (whooping cough). Pertussis rates in Oregon have been consistently higher than the national average. If your child has not received the Tdap vaccine, contact your child’s health care provider or Klamath County Health Department to make an appointment.

When should I take the SAT or ACT? My Junior Yea Students who plan to attend a four-year college immediately following high school will need to take a college entrance exam—either the SAT or the ACT. When should students take one of those exams? It depends upon the student. Students who are finishing either Algebra 2 or Pre Calculus this spring should take an entrance exam this spring. Students who will take Algebra 2 their senior year should probably wait and take the exam in November or December, so that they will have learned more of the math that will appear on the test. Students who plan to start college at a community college or a technical/vocational school do not need to take a college entrance exam unless they want to. Dear Potential Booster: Another exciting year of Mazama Viking athletics and clubs is here! This year celebrate the first year of the Mazama Booster Club. The Booster Club is currently conducting the first annual membership drive for the 2013-2014 school year.
What is the Booster Club? The Booster Club was formed for the purpose of providing the high school athletic departments and clubs with supplemental funding. This year we need to raise funds through memberships, concession stands, clothing sales, and special projects.
Who should join? In order to support all the programs and activities at Mazama High School, and to provide the students with a memorable experience the Booster Club relies on three things: Community and staff support Fundraisers Volunteer members We are looking for volunteers. The more volunteers we have, the more successful we are. We understand that life is busy. If you could volunteer for one or more of our functions we would be grateful. There are many ways to volunteer. We are looking for help with fundraising, Booster Booth concessions, and volunteers at other functions. The challenge will only be met with everyone working together and supporting the effort. This year is a great opportunity to become involved with the students and school. We believe through strong parental participation everyone is a winner.
How often does the club meet? Typically once per month. Do I need to attend meetings if I join? No, but you are always welcome to attend and any level of involvement is appreciated.
Am I required to participate in fundraising if I join? No. Our only fundraising at this time is selling of Mazama apparel at various events, and operating the Booster Booth at home games.
How do I join? Complete the membership form and mail it to: MHS Booster Club, c/o Mazama High School, 3009 Summers Lane, Klamath Falls, OR 97603

Summer Planning Meeting Mazama FBLA started off strong this summer with an annual summer planning meeting at Lake of the Woods. At this meeting Mrs. Story and the FBLA chapter officers planned the program of work for this upcoming year. It was also a time for the officers to bond and get to know each other. The officers are having a great dinner provided by FBLA.
First Social of the Year The first Mazama FBLA social was held Tuesday, September 17, in the foods room. Chocolate fondue and tasty things to dip in it were eaten by everyone who came.
This was a great chance for new members and old members to bond with each other and just have fun.
Interested in joining FBLA? See Mrs. Story in room 55 or come to our meetings!

Mazama FBLA FBLA in Action! Mazama FBLA members were involved in many activities during October. We rode on Mr. Drew’s fire truck in the homecoming parade, sold cotton candy at the bonfire and homecoming game, held a community service scavenger hunt, and served a potato dinner at the canal bowl. Also, our members sold March of Dimes paper pumpkins to help raise money for premature babies. All of these activities were very successful, and our members enjoyed being involved in them. The Chapter Leadership Tour was held here at Mazama on October 8. It was exciting for our members to have different chapters from around the state come to our school, including our state officer team. There were various workshops and great speeches from the state officer team. If you are interested in joining FBLA, see Mrs. Story in Room 55. Pickup a calendar of November events!
