PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME and MESSAGE- - Steve Morosin I want to thank you for attending Parent Teacher conferences in October and taking the time to keep current with your students’ progress at Mazama. We are proud of the accomplishments your students have made and appreciate your continued partnership. As the principal, along with you, I want the very best for our students. It gives me great pleasure to see how much you care and want the very best also. Remember you can always monitor your students’ academic progress, attendance and behaviors via the Home Access system. If you don’t have your students log in information or need some assistance with the program please contact the guidance office. This is also located on our school web page www.kcsd.k12.or.us As we approach the Holiday season and Winter Break, I would like to wish everyone a healthy and happy holiday. I hope that you all get the chance to spend time with family and friends, eat lots of turkey and that everyone has a peaceful and joyous new year! SUPERMARKET SATURDAY, November 1, 2014, was a great success. We had approximately 80 student volunteers. Mazama earned over 300 community service hours for our Sparrow Logan. We were able to help the food bank at the same time.

IMMUNIZATION REMINDER Oregon law requires 7th – 11th grade students to have 1 dose of Tdap vaccine. An appropriate medical or religious exemption is also acceptable. Please check your child’s records to be sure he/she has had the Tdap vaccine and that the school has a record of it. Tdap offers adolescents and adults protection against three serious diseases: Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (whooping cough). Pertussis rates in Oregon have been consistently higher than the national average. If your child has not received the Tdap vaccine, contact your child’s health care provider or Klamath County Health Department to make an appointment.

SENIOR PHOTO DEADLINE: November 21, 2014 Dear Members of the Class of ’15, Parents, Guardians, and Photographers: This year, as in years past, Mazama High School’s yearbook will be distributed in late May or early June before graduation instead of the fall after seniors graduate. So, to meet our deadlines for the yearbook, we need all senior color photos by November 21. You and your senior have three options available for portraits: (1) During portrait day, Lifetouch Photography took school portraits for seniors and will upload the photographs into our yearbook program. These photographs will meet all the requirements listed below and will be taken in time to meet the deadline. These photographs are the default photo for your senior if a senior photo is not submitted or not suitable. (2) You may choose a professional photographer of your own. However, if you do so, the photograph must meet the requirements listed below. Since we will accept only professional portraits that meet these requirements, please be sure your photographer understands and follows them. You should take this letter with you, in case the photography studio no longer has its copy. It is your responsibility to ensure that your photographer knows the deadline. The photographer can submit the photo to Miss Schmidt through email or by bringing in a disc with the image saved to it. (3) Professional photography is expensive. Have someone take a nice picture and have it put either on a CD or email it to Miss Schmidt as an attachment. Please do not print digital pictures on a home printer, even if it is a “photo printer.” Bring the photo disc to Miss Schmidt, and the yearbook staff will crop or scan to the correct specifications. Please see numbers 3-6 below to ensure a quality photograph in the yearbook. Professional Photo requirements: 1. The ONLY way to submit a photograph is through email or save the photo on a disc or a thumb drive. Please email the photograph to SchmidtL@kcsd.k12.or.us or bring in a disc with the senior’s first and last name printed clearly on the disc. 2. The top of the head must be ¼ inch from the top of the photograph. 3. Basic frontal or ¾ view—please no back shots. 4. Background: any style or color is fine. 5. Any suitable clothing: standard school dress is fine. 6. We will not accept props or other people or pets in the photo, soft focus, glamour drapes, low cut dresses, double images, silk matte, or pearl finishes. Please remember, it is your responsibility to make sure that we receive a photo which meets the above requirements. If we do not have your photo, or it does not meet the requirements, we will use your Lifetouch photo. These specifications allow us to print the best possible photo of you. It is the studio’s responsibility to inform the Mazama yearbook adviser and its senior clientele if it cannot meet the above specifications. Given sufficient time, we will do our best to inform you and the studio of any problems regarding your senior color portrait for the yearbook. When should I take the SAT or ACT? My Junior Yea Students who plan to attend a four-year college immediately following high school will need to take a college entrance exam—either the SAT or the ACT. When should students take one of those exams? It depends upon the student. Students who are finishing either Algebra 2 or Pre Calculus this spring should take an entrance exam this spring. Students who will take Algebra 2 their senior year should probably wait and take the exam in November or December, so that they will have learned more of the math that will appear on the test. Students who plan to start college at a community college or a technical/ vocational school do not need to take a college entrance exam unless they want to. Dear Potential Booster: Another exciting year of Mazama Viking athletics and clubs is here! The Booster Club is currently conducting it’s annual membership drive for the 2014-2015 school year.

What is the Booster Club? The Booster Club was formed for the purpose of providing the high school athletic departments and clubs with supplemental funding. This year we need to raise funds through memberships, concession stands, clothing sales, and special projects.

Who should join? In order to support all the programs and activities at Mazama High School, and to provide the students with a memorable experience the Booster Club relies on three things: Community and staff support Fundraisers Volunteer members We are looking for volunteers. The more volunteers we have, the more successful we are. We understand that life is busy. If you could volunteer for one or more of our functions we would be grateful. There are many ways to volunteer. We are looking for help with fundraising, Booster Booth concessions, and volunteers at other functions. The challenge will only be met with everyone working together and supporting the effort. This year is a great opportunity to become involved with the students and school. We believe through strong parental participation everyone is a winner.

How often does the club meet? Typically once per month. Do I need to attend meetings if I join? No, but you are always welcome to attend and any level of involvement is appreciated.

Am I required to participate in fundraising if I join? No. Our only fundraising at this time is selling of Mazama apparel at various events, and operating the Booster Booth at home games.

VIKING FOOTBALL The Viking football team is gearing up for a play-off run they hope to last through the month of November. The third-ranked and Skyline Conference Champion Vikings take their undefeated 8-0 record into the playoffs starting Friday, November 7 at home. We will be playing Siuslaw, time and day to be determined. In addition to the varsity team’s success, the JV and freshman football teams completed their seasons last week. The JV team finished the season with a 7-1 record, including a perfect 5-0 in league play. The freshman team finished 5-2-1. The Vikings have also started the Little Viking Reading Program, in which varsity football players have visited local elementary schools to read to kindergarten and first-graders. The program provides an opportunity for the players to give back to the community and generate excitement about Viking Football.


Mazama FBLA Scavenger Hunt Mazama FBLA had our annual community-wide Scavenger Hunt Wednesday, October 22. It started in Mrs. Story’s classroom where we formed our groups and began our scavenging at about 6 o’clock. At 8 o’clock, we gathered in the Mazama Cafeteria and enjoyed root beer floats as we tallied up our points. Items gathered were donated to local charities.

Mazama FBLA officer team members enjoyed a summer planning meeting at Mrs. Story’s cabin at Lake of the Woods!

Mazama FBLA has a dedicated officer team with great leaders. Our president, Paris Price, and all of the officer team want to welcome new members! We have meetings on Wednesdays every other week, and it is not too late to join! Come in and check us out in Room 51 at lunch!!!


National Honor Society induction was October 8, and 27 new members were inducted. President Jeff Meads explained the criteria for induction, which is for sophomores who maintained a 3.5 GPA in their first two semesters. Six volunteers activities, as well as maintaining their GPA and good citizenship, will qualify students to graduate with NHS recognition. At the ceremony, Amber Lease defined the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship: Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend the necessary time to cultivate his/ her mind in the quest for knowledge. This pillar can only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of impending reward. Service: The pillar of service can be reached in a variety of ways. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in NHS members. As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large. Leadership: Leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests in order to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to affect change in all aspects of their lives. Some examples of leadership can include, but are not limited to, leading group activities in the classroom and in the community, being an officer in a club, being a primary member of the band or choir, or being the captain of a sports team. Character: Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. Students with good character demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of their actions. Other National Honor Society officers are Secretary Katie Dwyer ,Treasurer Saraphina Barkley and Sgt at Arms Katie Dwyer.


Mazama High School’s annual homecoming events included a bonfire, spirit dress up days, school barbeque, football game, and a dance. Mazama High School’s student government would like to thank all of the businesses that helped make our week a great success. We would like to thank the following individuals and businesses who donated bonfire materials: Pat Ward, Mike Koger, J.W. Kerns, Brian Stenkamp, and Pepsi Cola Bottling. Additionally, we would like to thank Power Pac Rentals for discounting the generator used at the annual bonfire. Also, a big thank you to Mazama’s Booster Club, and Dutch Bros. Thank you to the following groups: the Army National Guard led by Sergeant Mathewson and Sergeant Barckman; the Marines led by Staff Sergeant Caster and Sergeant Dorris; Sergeant Pacassi with the Airforce; Petty Officer Jarvis with the Navy; our Mazama ProStart class led by Mrs. Whalen; Mrs. Harris and the Sparrow Club; and Mrs. Story, the advisor of FBLA, for running booths at the bonfire. We would like to thank Dave Davenport for being our DJ at the bonfire and homecoming dance. In addition, we would like to thank Scott Rice and Fire District 1 and the Klamath County Sherriff’s Department for providing your services at the bonfire. Thanks to the following individuals and businesses who donated to our Homecoming barbeque: Brandon Wood for donating water bottles, Dick Howard’s Meat Center, and Thunderbird. In addition, a huge thank you to Pete Hall, Casey and Kurtis Stotts, Jason and Brandon Wilson, Mary Ayers, and Joe Reister for driving classic cars during the halftime show. We appreciate Bogatay’s Tuxedo Rentals and Sales for discounted tuxedo rental prices for our homecoming princes. Finally, thank you to Rockin’ H Creations for printing our Homecoming t-shirts. Again, thank you to all for supporting Mazama High School.
