We hope the new year will herald the dawning of a happy and fulfilling year for you, your family and friends, and for Ibiza.

Last Call; Ibiza Needs Your

Voter Registration Closes Tuesday 30th December. Your last chance to assert your right to vote in the 2015 municipal elections. Why our Vote counts double.

There has been an excellent response to the campaign encouraging the ex-pat community to exercise their right to vote in Spain’s municipal elections in May 2015. It is difficult to ascertain an exact number of new voter regis-

trations in the last few months as there are several different methods of registering. For example those responding to written invitations will have been returned directly to the census office and will be included on the voter lists issued to the various Town Halls in the new year. As this is the easiest method of registration we can expect a good level of response based on the very good turnout by those without the invitation and needing to register in person at the ajuntament.

(Continued from page 1)

There has been a steady stream of registration confirmations on social media and even today Sunday 28th December new people are getting involved and sharing out the information to their own networks. The number of personal registrations has certainly raised a few eyebrows in the Ajuntament’s corridors of power, and as reported last week, the campaign has also been covered in the Spanish press. It is no wonder the level of registration in our community is getting the interest of Ibiza’s politicians. In Ibiza’s local government relatively small numbers can decide the outcome of a seat. By example in San Antonio at the last election the group in power hold a majority of 1 seat, and that seat equates to 266 votes. What the politicians will not fail to have realised is that in effect

our votes count almost double. The general turnout at the last election was between 50-60%. It is reasonable to assume that having gone to the trouble of actively registering, those people will all vote - so representing a turn out of 100%. The campaign was initially conceived by a small group of British ex-pats in San Antonio, including Ibizan editor Nick Gibbs and those named below. There is no partypolitical objective in the initiative, the issue is one of encouraging participation in local life, and ensuring the voices of ex-pats are heard. The campaign has grown to gain widespread support throughout Ibiza’s municipalities. Among several initiatives British businessmen Martin Makepeace and Nathan Viva have held weekly sign up sessions at council offices to assist new voters in the registration process. Nathan said yesterday that the sign up has shown no sign of abatement over Christmas. “I have another batch of forms and will be going to San An Town Hall again to help get them signed up. That is another 5 at least on Monday.” Jade Gandey has carried the message to the dispersed English speakers in the North where there has been a very good level of interest and confirmed registrations. Speaking of the campaign’s success Author and Businessman Colin Butts said “the response has been fantastic, it goes to show the level of interest amongst those of us who call Ibiza home“. On the importance of registering to vote in the elections Martin Makepeace, owner of estate agent The Ibiza Property Shop sais, “You live & work here so have your say. If you don't vote now then don't moan later. Get involved.”

The opportunity to register ends on December 30th - so this is a last call to do exactly that and get involved. If you received a written invitation and did not return it in time you can still go along and register in person at your town hall office. All of the contact details are printed on this page. Land Bank Initiative The Fondo para la Conservación de Ibiza (Ibiza Conservation Fund) and the Associació de Productors d’Agricultura Ecològica d’Ibiza i Formentera (Association of Ecological Agricultural Producers of Ibiza and Formentera) have joined forces to give the Land Bank concept a push on the island. At present there are 40 farms totalling 140 hectares in the local Land Bank and part of these areas have already been given to 25 people to work and grow ecological produce for sale. It is hoped that the new alliance between these two associations will create confidence amongst land owners who no longer exploit their farms, so they may put their own farms into the Land Bank knowing that the agreement between themselves, the Land Bank and the end user are reliable and guaranteed. In this way the aim of conservation of the countryside by returning it to traditional agricultural use will become a reality.

Taxi licences “just coming round the corner now love” San Jose town council yesterday removed the granting of seven new taxi licences from their agenda following confusion as to the criteria used to grant permissions. Councillor for PSOE-Pacte, Paquita Ribas, said that the procedure had been a shambles having taken three years to date and still not being resolved. Following the meeting a mad rush ensued as everybody ran to be first to the taxi rank. Calls were made to the control centre who repeatedly assured the stranded councillors that a taxi would be there in 5 minutes, but after an hour wait one person decided to negotiate terms with a young Italian offering the services of his vehicle, 2 started hitch hiking and the rest returned to their office to bed down for the night. Everybody was in agreement that something must be done to alleviate the shortage of Taxis.

Their current version is considered by some users who have tried it in Ibiza as being so sparse and outdated as to be counter productive. markable that with a lack of a highly localised address system such as the postcodes used in most countries, plus so many rural properties and multilanguage communication difficulties, the island does not adopt the readily available protocol of using numerical G.P.S. co-ordinates. Most of us have phones that use G.P.S. and hence a simple solution is available in your pocket to every time you have struggled to have somebody find you, or you someone else. area of land near Puig D’en Valls belonging to building materials provider Suministros Ibiza, will remain classified as a green zone. Suministros Ibiza had claimed that the classification was ridiculous and arbitrary as the area was in the heart of their operation making the rest of their site inoperable if this section was protected as a green zone. Unfortunately for them, the courts this week disagreed and upheld the protection making the firm pay the court costs as well. Talamanca Sewer Pipe Latest. All summer there have been problems with the sewage pipe going out to sea at the beach. On several occasions the beach has had to close with a situation that has repeated itself repeatedly over the last 30 years. The system is old and inadequate for the modern day population of the area, it gets broken by yachts anchoring and is allegedly damaging the marine environment. It appears to go 30 metres out to sea but, in the original construction plan, the pipe was specified as being 2 kilometres in length from the shore carrying partially cleaned sewage to be released into the ocean at a depth of 40 metres. Supported by the Consell Island Government, the town hall in Ibiza want to replace the sewage over-flow pipe now, but the higher authorities responsible for the installation are reluctant to fund a change until it can be in-

Hot, but also very windy! 2014 Hottest on Record 30% Less Rainfall 37% More Wind 2014 has turned out to be the hottest year on record since data was collected at the airport weather centre in 1953. This year only May, July and August were at normal temperatures with every other month being warmer than the usual. September was the hottest at 1,8º above the normal

temperature for this month. The average for the year was 18,6º. It has also been a drier year with 30% less rainfall and an average of only 257 litres per square metre being recorded. July was the driest month. Wind speeds have been 37% stronger than the normal, as well. If you've bought a thick coat for January and February then keep it for another year as the experts are predicting a mild winter on the island.

corporated within the project for new sewage works for Ibiza Town as well. It was reported this week that findings from a survey carried out in 2010 said that the area where the pipe discharges the sewage was not badly affected, therefore implying that the changing of the pipe could wait a until they funded and built a new sewage plant. Neighbours, businesses and local politicians were annoyed by this and it seems little can be done. However, with the elections coming up, many candidates are promising immediate action if elected.

the budget will go on new investments like a new sewage plant for Portinatx, improvements to the municipal swimming pool, more selective rubbish disposal in the borough and improving the water supply in Sant Joan Village. Most of these investments will receive agreed upon extra funding from higher authorities so that they can go ahead. The council are to build toilets and a shelter for tourists at the internationally renowned Phoenician Es Cuieram historic sight at Sa Cala de Sant Vicent. Toilets will also be installed at Benirras and Port de Sant Miquel.

No Tax Hike in Sant Joan. Handling a 6,8 million euros budget this year, the Mayor of Sant Joan, Antonio Mari, has promised no tax increases for the residents in 2015. 1,5 million of

Farming. This year, 1,554 school children from Ibiza have visited farms on the island as part of a programme called Apostam Pel Camp (We Support Farming).

www.theibizan.com

Run by the local leader group and Friends of the Earth, the scheme was started in 2011 and focuses on making pupils aged 11 and 12yrs from 17 schools more aware of the agricultural heritage of Ibiza, to make them realize that farming is a possibility as a career, to give them an insight into what the island's farms produce and increase awareness of the environmental benefits of sustaining agriculture on the island. After a theoretical orientation in the classroom, the children are then taken on field trips to the farms to observe, but also to get hands on helping out with the work and processes. Christmas Lottery Win. Some local school teachers, politicians, lawyers and Town Hall workers in San Antonio are celebrating a fantastic Spanish Christmas lottery win. A local neighbourhood association, representing the Valencian community in the town, bought many of the winning tickets from a local lottery outlet and, as is traditional, sold them on to their members and to friends to make money for the association. Others were sold at the lottery outlet in the town to individuals and also in Ibiza Town. All in all 6 million euros were divided out amongst the lucky winners in proportion to what initial stake they had made in buying the ticket or a share of one. A great way to start the New Year. Success in Belgium & Holland. Helped by the Spanish Tourist Office in the Brussels, the Ibiza Convention Bureau has carried out several successful promotions in both Holland and Belgium designed to help promote Ibiza as a destination for conventions. The concept of Ibiza as a destination for conventions was well received with over 300 firms attending just one of the presentations in Holland.

3 Cat Sharks Born. For the first time ever, three Cat Sharks have hatched from eggs laid at the San Antonio Aquarium. One of the three fragile fishes needed help from marine biologist Veronica Nunez, to break free of the egg. Far from the

biggest of sharks they will soon develop to the 60cm adult length. The aquarium currently has two males and two female adults. We understand genetic swabs have been sent to the Jeremy Kyle show and expect a verdict on parentage in due course.

The inserted brochure highlights family tourism, culture, patrimony, gastronomy, marine activities, sports facilities, the island's night life and that we are gay friendly. Ibiza in the Bike Friendly Club. Joining an association with members such as the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Ibiza town is to become more bike friendly. By joining this association, the Consell Island Government has agreed to promote cycle use as an alternative fun, healthy, sustainable and safe form of transport especially for short journeys in the town. It also means that there will be investments in safety, promotion and infrastructures to make cycling easy in the town. With no other Balearic town is in this association, Ibiza will be leading the way. Eviction Reprieve. Residents of three properties owned by the town hall in the Dalt Villa area of Ibiza have won a reprieve from eviction by the council. First served notice in 2013 and always refusing to move, the courts this week ruled that there were mistakes in the Town Hall eviction paperwork and that the evictions could not take place in the next few days as the council had intended. Gerts Arsenal Back In News. After being stopped by the authorities from holding a party in the historic underground arms store in Santa Gertrudis this summer, the new owners of this underground complex of tunnels and store rooms are in the news again. It appears that they bought the installation last February without knowing that the Consell Island Government had stored archaeological pieces locked behind specially sealed doors in two of the store rooms and that only the Cultural Ministry and the Archaeological Museum in Ibiza have the keys to access them. Stating that they are absolutely supportive of the arts and culture, the new owners are quite willing to let the authorities access this material but they are making official moves to get the Consell Cultural Ministry

National Spanish Government Launch Transparency Website Wouldn’t we like to know what our politicians earn and what they spend the taxpayers’ money on? Well, from this week we can find out thanks to a new transparency website launched by the Spanish Government. After dropping ten places, to 64th out of 100 countries, in the Transparency International 2013 Corruption Index, and the subject of corruption potentially becoming more damaging than unemployment, this is seen as a step in the right direction of establishing trust and confidence in Spain’s politicians. The website will make more than 500,000 details available of pub-

lic interest so that all citizens can access it freely. This is the first ever attempt by the ruling PP Conservatives to make this type of information accessible and is part of the new Transparency Law, which is already in effect. The information included in the website, which can be seen at transparencia.gob.es includes subjects such as the gross salaries of all highranking politicians and officials which contracts are awarded to which companies What agreements the Government has entered into. The website has been constructed by a team of 80 and will

These requests will be viewed by a team of 36 civil servants, and those petitions that repeatedly surface will be included on the website. The civil servants have 30 days to satisfactorily answer each petition and if the user is not happy with the answer to his request, he may put it forward to the Transparency Council who will then judge whether the information being asked for has any right to be withheld. 2014 Review

Does Ibiza ever have an uneventful year? If it does, this wasn’t it. We start, as with our tenure, in March.

Ibizan Live Ibizan roving reporter Claire B had a busy summer schedule with the Island attracting some of the biggest names in music. Snoop Dog’s P.R. stunt, cancelling the gig from his private jet hours before he was due on stage, convinced many and upset some. No such antics with Kylie who was her usual lucky lovely smiley self., and prodigy who had arguably the biggest ‘must see’ factor.

Page 5

March Our inaugural edition lead with news that 20% of Hotels increased their Star rating in the preceding year, news that has received enthusiastic praise at the all important Berlin Tourist Trade Fair. We first reported on two stories that would be ongoing through the summer, the Port Authority plans for the development of the south pier, plans whicj have subsequently proved to be anything but straightforward, and also Joan Panteloni, President of Ibiza’s PP Conservatives, telling his own Conservative run Town Hall that he was starting legal proceedings against them over the laws introduced to reduce opening times in San Antonio’s West End. In the first of our Ibizan interviews Danny Whittle talked of his Ibiza journey as being “like a dream come true. For a boy that grew up in a terraced house in Stoke on Trent next to the pit to end up in a villa with views over the ocean—I consider it part of my evolution.” In a forthright interview providing an interesting insight to one of Ibiza’s true movers and shakers, he said of achieving success “In Ibiza, if you stick at it, you’ll eventually become an institution and people leave you alone.” And in local life it was carnival time.

On March 27th we first reported a story that came to conclusion last week - that of The Matutes Group asking if it would be possible to transform the lighthouse on Conillera (rabbit) island into a small rural hotel.

Ibizan Interview With all due humility we would have to say that our roster of superstar interviews was none to shabby for a small provincial newspaper. Hardwell gave an insight to his life by numbers and Boy George talked of a life that is anything but. Carly and Claire both managed to contain their beating hearts with Mssrs Eldris and Bugg whilst Claire set a text record with her in-depth Ting Ting thing.

We also carried a report on Government Energy Minister, José Manuel Soria, reiterating that a negative environmental study would stop all plans for oil exploration around the coastal waters of the Baleares. Little did we know then that exploration by way of sonic boom surveys had already started in 2013.

2014 Review (Continued from page 5)

April The month started with sad news in the passing of Frankie Knuckles. DJ David Morales summed up the views of Ibiza’s dance music community in saying “It is

difficult to imagine Ibiza without house music, and difficult to imagine house music without Frankie Knuckles.” In other news ex GPS Boss was handed 7 years all inclusive. The founder and e x Managing Director of the GPS hotel chain, Fernando Ferré Cardó, was condemned to 7 years prison and an 11 million € fine plus another 11 million € for civil liability for his part in company fraud. May In May we reported on record tourist numbers and spend for the preceding year. “million Tourists visited Ibiza and Formentera in 2013 and spent 2,330 million € during their stay. 432,6 million € were spent by Spanish visitors and 1.897 million € were spent by foreign visitors. 850 million € of the total spend was spent in shops, restau-

rants and other businesses making up the tourist complimentary industry. This is a 30.8% increase in spending in the tourist complimentary industry over the last 3 years.” Judge Jules continued the Ibizan interview series giving his personal views on where Ibiza is at and the challenges it is facing. The Oil debate stepped up a gear and a we reported on a family feud that ended in a shotgun execution. May highlights also included “man gets leg stuck down a drain.” And that brief March to May will have to suffice as our review of the year. I have just had ‘the call’ from the Diario that they are going home if I don’t send the print through now, and as it is new year we don’t have much choice. Though this may not be the review of the news year I had hoped, it is a pretty accurate reflection of my own 2014. It is one hell of a time consuming job. I’ll leave you with some of the covers that reflect 2014. Happy new year!

Burns Night, Jan 25th

Ibiza’s own Burns lunch has become something of an institution on the ex-pat calendar in January. Held at the popular Chimichurri restaurant in San Augustin just outside San Antonio, the lunch welcomes all whether from North or South of the border. For the uninitiated here is a little background. A Burns supper or lunch is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert

Burns, author of many Scots poems. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet's birthday, 25 January. Burns suppers are most common in Scotland and Northern Ireland, however, there are now celebrations throughout the UK and in ex-pat communities worldwide. The first suppers were held in memoriam at Ayrshire at the end of the 18th century by Robert Burns' friends on 21 July, the anniversary of his death, and have been a regular occurrence ever since. The first Burns club was founded in Greenock in 1801 by merchants born in Ayrshire, some of whom had known Burns. They held the first Burns supper on what they thought was his birthday, 29 January 1802, but in 1803 they discovered in Ayr parish records that his date of birth was 25 January 1759. Since then, suppers have been held on 25 January. Burns suppers typically include haggis, a dish celebrated by Burns in ‘Address to a Haggis’, Scotch whisky, and the recitation of Burns's poetry.

Nicole Torres January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany and the twelfth day of Christmas. It is when the Three Kings of the East arrived in Bethlehem and presented their gifts to the baby Jesus. For this reason, this is the most celebrated day for children and when they usually receive the bulk of their presents, which the Kings leave for them in their homes. The eve before, on 5th December, most towns hold processions with Gaspar, Melchor and Baltasar sitting atop their own float, greeting the town’s residents and throwing kilos of sweets to all the children. In the province of Granada, in the small town in Sierra Nevada, the Three Kings actually ski into the village, while in coastal regions like Ibiza they arrive by boat. Many parents often bribe their children into being good around this time of the year, with the threat that the Kings will leave them a piece of coal (made out of sugar) instead of any presents. And the day won’t be complete without something good to eat either. It is tradition to eat a Roscón de Reyes on this day, which is a doughy sweet roll shaped into a ring, inside it there is a small baby Jesus) or toy is hidden. Whoever ends up with the trinket is considered blessed and gets to wear the paper crown that comes with the Roscón. There is also a bean inside and whoever gets that is joked about and in some houses has to pay the Roscón!

Noche Vieja (New Year’s Eve – 31st December)

Nicole Torres Noche Vieja is a night to party and the Spanish do that in style. Most offices close at lunchtime and families kick off the celebrations with another meal all together. At midnight, it is traditional to watch the special televised event from the Puerta del Sol in Madrid leading up to midnight. At the stroke of midnight eating one grape for each chime of the bell, which represents the twelve months of the year, is considered to bring good luck for the forthcoming year.

All the funds raised from this great event will go to supporting people with cancer and their families in Ibiza and Formentera and supporting prevention and screening programmes, such as the Colon Screening Programme. Thanks also to who participated in our Auction and Raffle and congratulations to the winners who will be contacted by phone and can collect their prizes from the Hotel Royal Plaza.

combination of wet road, sharp bend and no safety wall that would stop cars flying into dyke. I was extremely lucky to survive! Thank God and believe my guardian Angel was with me. Thank goodness they were, and thank you for sharing information on another Ibiza black-spot. Below a photo showing the dyke and, hoping it will be visible in print, a map - the left hand pin being the location.

A worthy cause Nina, good luck with your efforts.

Congratulations to all concerned, a splendid effort as always.

Can Guash Car Crash Dear Ibizan I wonder if you would be interested in this story. I just came out alive from a bad car crash on the back road between Can Guasch and San Juan road. But that's not the main reason why I think you should warn people about this death trap. Two weeks ago there was yet another crash like mine, last year again, this week only three other cars in the same dyke. I just feel like someone will go to heaven instead of AandE in Can Misses soon. These are the pictures from my crash. It's a

Food For Ibiza I have founded an organisation to support families in Ibiza and Formentera. We will supply food and drink to families with very little money to buy food and clothes—some families are shy, proud and don’t want other people to know about their social situation, others don’t have a car and cannot attend the food banks/Red Cross/Caritas (Caritas has lunches and dinners). Formentera, has no such services and so these families definitely need support. I founded the facebook group and while we have around 250 members, we are looking to find serious partners including hotels/restaurants/farmers who can donate almost expired food or expired food (but still edible), as well as damaged products. I hope to register the association soon to have a more serious foundation to get in touch with the food bank Mallorca, Caritas, the Red Cross, Town Halls, etc. I have lived in Ibiza for 9 years. I’m married and have two children, a 3yr old, and an 11 month old, I work 6 hours a day all year and Food For Ibiza is my passion! You can con-

Street Pocket Robbery Hello Ibizan, I am hoping you can help or pass on my details to the local Police so they can help - and perhaps make a great story out of this? I had my iPhone taken from my pocket during a weekend in June in San Antonio - it went quiet until recently but now the person who took it from me is using it again and it showed up on 'Find my iPhone' - but they have now switched it off again - since I sent a message to the screen saying "hand it into the Police or I will get them come and arrest you as I have your pictures and location." It’s showing as being on Carrier d'Alacant They have been taking pictures and the pictures have come through to my new phone… so I have their face pictures, pictures of their apartment, and also a panoramic picture taken from their balcony so I know exactly which apartment it is to send to the police too. Is this something you can help with? I think it would be a great story for The Ibiza Sun to show you are committed to helping track down criminals in this way using modern technology. I have attached their face pictures, pictures of their apartment inside so Police can confirm it is the correct place, the panoramic picture they took from the balcony. Look forward to your reply, and hopefully help. Kind Regards, Neil Morgan We have received several reports of stolen/lost phones and laptops etc being recovered through this type of tracking software. “Amazing what they can do now-a-days” . We all have an interest in helping reduce crime in Ibiza, but I cannot print the pictures sent unilaterally Neil as in doing so I would probably be guilty of committing one myself. We will help put you in touch with the Police to take matters further and hope you recover your property.

Letter From Juan I have described many times in my letters the joy and pleasure I get from walking around the Island whether it is in the campo or along the coast, there are many wonderful things to see and photograph. Unfortunately, each year it is getting more difficult to do the same walks on the old paths as new fences are appearing and blocking the way and more and more Caminos are getting covered in tarmac. However, there are still plenty to left and over the year you will see some amazing sights. A couple of weeks ago we came across a field that with its carpet of white flowers made it look as if there had been a snowfall and in the midst of it all was a white scarecrow! The first scarecrow I had seen on the Island and the first white scarecrow I had ever seen. Apart from the beautiful wild flowers and scenery the other thing I have noticed is the increasing development on the Island. Cala Tarida for instance has become this massive housing development and it never ceases to amaze me how many houses are so close to the coastline. I thought there was this rule about not being able to build within 500 metres and that the public had the right of access but it appears you can’t build in that area but the public access is only 6 metres! Anyway maybe one day the paper we interview someone from the Ley de Costas department and enlighten us. All I can say I was surprised to see on the coastline between Cala Codolar and Cala Conte, where the new Stonehenge has been built, what appears to be a concrete wall being built right down to the cliff edge but no doubt all will be revealed in due course! I hope you have a great Christmas and that the New Year brings you everything you could wish for. Good luck with your New Year resolutions and if you are one of the few people that have read my letter over the years you may be surprised to know that I wrote my first Juan letter 10 years ago in the first week in January. Happy New Year, yours Juan.

Sabina Brownstein extols the benefits of

Healthy Living Sabina Brownstein You hear a lot lately about living a healthy lifestyle, but what does it really mean? In general it means maintaining a healthy weight, eating good food and regular exercise. Sounds very simple, but many people find it is not so easy. The trick to changing to a healthy lifestyle is making small changes step by step: adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, having an extra glass of water, doing some exercises like yoga or Qi Gong in the morning. These are just a few of the ways you can improve your health without drastic changes. One of the biggest challenges for Doris Love the World GET STUFFED ! Over-fed and watered, belly bulging out, Crackered, fat and polaxed up me teapot spout, Still in me pyjamas and it’s half past four, Only just managed to get dogs out the door, Never mind - Christmas, that’s what it’s for, Indulging excess, while gifting to the poor, Frenzied paper parcels, glitter and rosettes, Fairy lights and candles, families place bets Who can still be civil after Boxing Day ? Who will settle up when credit bills to pay ? Underneath another story bubbling away, Mother Earth´s ascension can’t be kept at bay, Mayan elders speaking, time’s running out, Better have a party, celebrate and shout ! If days are numbered, make each one count, Keep cupboards well stocked, healthy amount, Dig even deeper down inside yer heart, Be the change you wish for in worlds torn apart. Well, I’d love to be out, doing power of good, But I’m in me dressing gown burning old wood, Trusting that once knee bandage has a rest, I’ll be able to kick heels high and do me best, But til then, walking in forest feeling puffed, I’m knackered out, full up, old and getting stuffed !

most people is to get started with a daily exercise program. We know it’s good for us but avoid it because we are afraid that exercise has to be vigorous to be worth our time. The truth is that all movement is good for you. Of course the more you do the healthier you’ll be, but even moderate activities like gardening and daily walking can make a big difference. Everything that adds more movement to your daily life can: reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes im pr ov e j o i n t s t a b i l it y increase and improve range of motion elevate your moods reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression enhance self esteem reduce stress Even if you only make small changes with a modest weight loss you will reap significant benefits. Many studies have shown that just a 10% weight reduction helps overweight people to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol while increasing longevity. Walking in Ibiza’s beautiful nature along the coastline or in the countryside is one of the best “soft exercises” you can imagine. Taking in the incredible colours of the sea and the Mediterranean sky is very soothing to the eyes. The smells of the many herbs which grow wildly here (lavender, thyme, rosemary…) energize you physically and bring

harmonic balance to your whole being. Eating a wholesome food is another important part of the healthy lifestyle. Not only can a clean diet help with weight management it can also improve your overall health and energy levels. The Mediterranean Diet is really good for you and it is easy for us to follow here on Ibiza lots of fruits and vegetables, legumes, good olive oil, fresh fish and some nuts or seeds. Taking a trip to the markets in one of the villages or visiting an organic farm not only guarantees you fresh locally grown products, but taking the time to go mindfully shopping for your food will give you a real connection to it. Did you ever taste fresh lettuce from an organic farm which just came out of the field? If not you should definitely give it a try because you will be in for a pleasant surprise. Fresh foods chosen consciously and prepared with love will nourish your body in a wholesome and positive way. You can see that creating a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to involve major changes, in fact drastic changes almost always lead to failure. Making small changes in how you live each day can lead to big rewards, and after a short period of exercising and eating consciously you will feel the difference in your entire wellbeing. So figure out what you can do to be a bit more healthy today… your body will thank you for it.

It’s that time of year… Christmas festivities have ended and bittersweet New Year’s resolutions are being made, there is time to pause and reflect on such compelling questions such as, is there more to life than this? The Alpha Course explores and tackles the “big questions” in a relaxed, low-key interactive

small group atmosphere. There is a 10 week series of entertaining and informative DVD presentations commencing with a light meal followed by a time of discussion. All questions or comments are welcomed – there are no questions too challenging or

too simple. Who is Alpha for? Everyone, no matter what your age, nationality or religious beliefs, you are welcome! It is ideal for those wanting to investigate Christiancontinued over

Monday 29th December to Sunday 4th January ARIES – Four of Wands Time to celebrate the start of a new creative collaboration. This is very much a team spirited card enabling you to get the best people on board any new project. Reliability will be a key issue; however, this card promises smooth, hassle free dealings with others this week. For others, home moves that prove fortunate; you’ll find your dream accommodation TAURUS - Transformation A week to make some bold changes in direction; time to say goodbye to the old lifestyle and to surprise others with the decisions you've made. You cannot and do not want to live life stuck in the same old rut. This of course will upset those closest to you. However you must go for change to gain personal freedom. GEMINI – The World Your world is probably more of a stage than other signs. You need to have big visions and a board horizon; then all’s good. This week, you’ve decided that change is the only way forward. This is down to a desire for more sweeping life changes. You’re preparing the ground for future success; so coming across as super confident. CANCER – Five of Cups You’re never one to hang about if feeling unappreciated so best you don’t look back on what might have been. Cut your losses and stride forward to a brighter, better future. Much water has passed under the bridge regarding events that transpired last year; hanging on to resentment will only bring more of the same. Forgive and release. LEO – Five of Wands Wands are ruled by the element of fire as is LEO which makes for a sensitive and combustible week. This is however, a healing time as you finally get to grips with clearing the emotional baggage that's recently cramped your style. By all means clear the, but use some humour not a blow torch to get your point across. VIRGO – Ten of Disks This is a fab card for your finances as you'll be attracting financial rewards with insulting ease; especially if you've just executed a cunning plan to increase earnings. Customers/clients are happy to buy what you’re selling so set the bar high. Ambitions are about to be realised as your public love what you do. Property investments are worth looking into. LIBRA – Seven of Swords If you’ve been misunderstood by others who don't get where you’re coming from - you can be forgiven for feeling hard done by. Think; what’s the point continuing with certain associations if they’re nothing but bad news. You’re a bright light so don't let others pull you down. Ignore/avoid jealous types; stick to those who recognise your true worth. SCORPIO – Six of Disks Successful week ahead as you are rewarded for past efforts with some kind of bonus and if you continue to throw your energy into the task then further rewards await. For some, expect some kind of promotion or success in in a job interview. Friends, love ones and associates are likely to be generous if you need some financial help. SAGITTARIUS – Five of Swords It may be difficult for you to keep a lid on your temper as you discover what’s been going on behind your back. You’ll be pretty upset by the underhanded dealings of others as you are usually a good judge of character. Sometimes you trust unconditionally only to find you’ve been hoodwinked by a charming attitude. Time to wise up! CAPRICORN – The Hanged Man Why sacrifice your time or energy for someone, or a project when to be honest, you don’t have the time or the inclination? If you cannot give it 100%, bail out early rather than disappoint others. A retreat or spa will do you the world of good, if only to replenish the energy you've expended over the festive season. AQUARIUS – Five of Disks There's no lack in life, only your own attitude to receiving. Turn your thoughts to what's really important; relationships with others. If you’re feeling the lack of abundance in love or life generally; then look at what you send out. Nature/life loves balance; if you give out some love and kindness...stands to reason that some will head back your way! PISCES – Page of Cups Questions of loyalty arise this week; you know what you owe and to whom, especially emotionally. When it comes to personal relationships, you’ll be able to communicate your needs and desires more objectively than normal and you’re willing to see situations as they really are rather than how you'd like them. There’s good (Continued onnews pagefor 12) parents regarding a child’s progress.

Shebizan Amanda O’Riordan Ho Ho Ho… Happy holidays Everybody. It’s not quite the 25th but by the time you read

this I’ll be in the Big Apple for a dose of Christmas shopping in the “city that never sleeps”. I’m really looking forward to doing my best Carrie Bradshaw impression in Manhattan, capturing as much fashion gossip for you from 5th Avenue to the East Village, sans Manolos but adorning biker boots and thick socks. 2014 has been a brilliant year for this blog and I’ve seen it go

When To Call It A Day...

New year is the time many people take stock of where they are in love and life. For some that will raise Sohpia V’s question, when to call it a day? Sophia V. Sometimes, we may love someone, however that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are right for us. Some relationships can become suffocating, negative, and make you unhappy. The best way to decide whether to call your relationship a day is to write a list of the positive things that your relationship brings, and the negative things. Weigh up the pro’s and con’s. Which list is the longest? Which points are more important? A list should help you in deciding which action to take. If your partner is constantly criticising you, nagging you, controlling you, being abusive in any way, affecting your self esteem, or preventing you from being happy, or succeeding in life, then they may not be right for you. When someone truly loves you, they support you, and help you. Look at whether you have more

happy or unhappy times. Conflict and fighting now and then is normal, a destructive relationship on the other hand, isn’t. If your sex life has completely gone downhill, try and find out the reason for this. Is it more than just a dry spell? Has one of you stopped desiring the other? Or is it do to issues within you? If you find yourself bored most of the time, or noticing how attractive other people are, perhaps you have gone off, or are starting to go off your partner, or simply looking for more. Picking fights is another major sign that something is completely wrong. Why would you want to distress the person you love, or make them unhappy? If you avoid future plans, this could be a sign that you are hoping that it will soon come to an end, or have no faith in the relationship lasting. Again, sit down, and have a long think about what is best for you both. Remember: it’s better to be alone than be with someone who makes you feel alone.

from strength to strength. I’ve made some great connections and friends along the way. Wanted to say a special thanks to Tash and Nicole of Left Bank Six and their constant support in sharing the blog every week. Be sure to check out their store in leafy Essex, if you’re ever out that way. Also a massive thank you to Richie Pryor and the gang at Radio One Mallorca for the opportunity to gas on about the subject I love most every week plus a huge thanks to Nick Gibbs, the Editor of The Ibizan paper in Ibiza who publish my blog for the beautiful Balearic people. I can’t wait to get back to the White Isle. I’ll be back under Balearic stars in mid January for another Flower Power festival, this time a little chillier but still as much fun. As we gradually come to the end of another year and before we draw a line under it, it's time to get philosophical about the next chapter we all face. Ponder on this… it makes me feel positive anyway…

“A great source of calamity lies in regret and anticipation; therefore a person is wise who thinks of the present alone, regardless of the past or future. Life is divided into three terms that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present, to live better in the future. “ Lots of love and I’ll be seeing you all in 2015. I’ll be back with the next instalment of this blog on New Years Day 2015

There's another full programme over the w/end and New Year which I'm sure will sort the men from the boys so will be interesting to see how the table looks on Jan 2 but with a current 10 point gap between 3rd and top it looks

as if Chelsea and Man City could break away, but never, never discount Man U! So, that's it for this year, I can now consign my digits to the drawer for a few week's R and R, as well as not having to worry

Knowing we have quite a few crossword fans among our readers we didn’t think it fair to leave you with only 1 for the duration of our January break - the 4 below will bridge the gap, if you pace yourself.. We have also tucked the answers

about deadlines. I hope you all have a brilliant New Year and that all your resolutions come together! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo y Molts Anys i Bons!

Sport The Ibizan, Monday 29th December 2014, Issue 767

Jezza´s Sports Report Jeremy Parmenter Well, Sports fans, how was your Christmas break? Hope you had an enjoyable one and that you received lots of lovely pressies! 'Er indoors and I had a superb, traditional Xmas lunch at friends in an old finca in San Agustin, and then were forced to play in a game of 10 pin bowling on their Wii, and would you believe it, after 3 strikes out of the first 4 (no doubt beginner's luck!) I was still beaten by said “she who must be obeyed”! Oh, the humiliation! Moving on swiftly ('cos I don't want to be reminded of my embarrassment) due to Our Ed's decision to take a break thru' January, this'll be my last report until Jan 29 and so many things can and will happen in the sporting world throughout this period so my next report will be overflowing, no doubt. Not a lot has happened since my last diatribe apart from in the Footie Premier League but more on that later so, just for the mo' while I await today's Boxing Day results and to keep you amused, here are a few of my sporting hopes for 2015, some for real, some tongue-in-cheek! Cricket – England, under new skipper Morgan, beat the Aussies and India in the January 3 team ODI tournament and then sur-

prise us all by winning the World Cup in February! Definitely tongue-in-cheek! Golf – McIlroy goes on to win at least another Major and Tiger gets back to winning ways after his miserable run of injuries, to at least give Our Rory serious competition. Tennis – The Fed continues with his stunning 2014 form at the Australian Open in January and once again wins yet another Major, proving that you're not necessarily over the hill after 30. Also that Rafa comes back from his recent injuries to mount another challenge and that Our Andy puts his below par recent form behind him to once again get back to winning ways. F1 – Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, the new dream team at McLaren, mount a serious challenge to Hamilton and Rosberg at Mercedes, to make the Drivers Championship more exciting. Oh, and also that Mr Ecclestone (I thought they were northern cakes!) steps down and lets somebody else take the reins - 'bout time isn't it? Rugby Union – England snatch the World Cup later in 2015 at Twickenham, from holders New Zealand, who seem to think that they own it by divine right, which they don't! Also that Wales, Scotland and Ireland prove that the Southern Hemi-

Jezza predicts great joy for England’s Cricket fans at the start of the year, or does he? sphere teams are not the b's and e's! Footie – FIFA come to their senses and kick Sepp Blatter, the Swiss gnome, off his pedestal as President as the guy thinks he's the Almighty and 15 years without any serious challenge is absolutely criminal! That Ronaldo wins the World Player of the Year for the 2nd successive year as not only does he deserve it for his consistency but, in my humble opinion, he's a better all round player than Messi. That an English team (preferably in royal blue) wins the Champions League in Berlin in May and another English team wins the Europa League. West Brom 1 Man City 3: City in an absolute blizzard at the highest ground in the league, 3 up at half time to keep firmly on the leaders heels whilst the Baggies

are only 2 points off the drop zone. Man Utd 3 Newcastle 1: Rooney with a brace and an assist in a comfortable win to keep Utd in the top 3 as the Magpies suffer their second successive loss. Crystal Palace 1 Southampton 3: Good away win for the Saints to keep them in the top 4 but the Eagles drop in to the danger zone. Arsenal 2 QPR 1: A tight one at the Emirates as Sanchez misses a penalty and Giroud sees red but still no away point for Our 'Arry. Leicester 1 Tottenham 2: A gritty away win for Spurs but looking desperate for the Foxes as they continue their miserable form, no wins in 12. Burnley 0 Liverpool 1: Rodgers seems to be happy but let's face it, he'll take any point or 3 at the mo, even after a scrappy win for the Reds with Burnley still in serious danger.
