Liberation & Subjugation Ibiza’s 2019 Gay Pride celebrations and events look to be bigger and better than ever. The Ibiza LGTB Association have planned a programme of events encompassing film, literary, theatre, performance art, cabaret, plenty of parties and the all important march for the rights of the LGTBIQ+ community on Saturday, June 15.

Liberation Ibiza is a very tolerant community in many respects including sexuality. It is wonderful that so many people will have the freedom to express their own sexuality and identity, and do so openly and positively in a way that was not available to previous generations, nor current

generations elsewhere in the world.

Even in progressively tolerant societies, some expressions of identity may receive negative or judgemental responses. In this respect Gay Pride events are so important in creating a collective support, so that nobody need feel isolated or excluded.

 Former Salford Red Devils player cleared to return to the UK to continue treatment

Jansin Turgot To Return Home 3 weeks after falling from the multi storey car park at Ibiza airport, Jansin Turgot has been flown to the UK by air ambulance to continue his treatment in his hometown of Hull.

The young rugby star suffered breaks in his hips, legs, arms and hands, fractures to his spine and every bone in his face broken. The trauma from the fall caused toxins to be released into his body and his kidneys had started to fail, the severity of his injuries meant that he was kept in a medically induced coma.

A CT scan revealed no signs of brain damage, and his heart, liver and kidneys are functioning on their own. Upon his return to the UK Jansin will be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the Hull Royal Infirmary to continue his recovery.

Awake and Communicating His mother Carol Butler has been by his side since the accident and said “The latest is he is awake and trying to communicate… He has shown his sense of humour a couple of times. He has had no sedatives for 36 hours, so he is relaxed on his own”.

Carole posted an update on Twitter stating a recent Saturday was a “happy day” as her son was breathing unaided, began a communication process, and even danced to the local radio.

She said: “Throughout the day he was in and out of high temperatures, shaking, sweating, but it was still a good day.

“At one point I asked if he wanted music on. He gave me this yes sign. Local radio was the best option on my phone I’m afraid.

“The tune starts and he was lifting his shoulders in time to the music, a whole new version of bed dancing. He is so funny.”

On Sunday 9th June Carole said: “Three weeks ago I made a promise to my boy that I would not leave this island without him no matter what.

“Tomorrow son, I’m taking you home.”

Vulnerable People A concession was made for squatters who are considered ‘at risk of social exclusion’, the Spanish term for vulnerable groups. In that situation Barcelo said that Social Services must be informed of the action so that they can offer appropriate support.

Aside from those at risk, the statement issued in a press release encouraged a very tough line by Police.

Editorial Comment There are many squatted buildings around Ibiza, including the building in our feature photo which has a large community living in the cellars of an abandoned building project. Another was brought into the public eye recently when a blaze tore through a large building in Ibiza Town, resulting in one fatality.

Recent legislation introduced forces large multiproperty owners, such as banks, not to leave residential properties empty. However, this and other changes have done little to alleviate the severe shortage of affordable housing in Ibiza, which has among the highest prices in Spain.

Despite this, if a snap social media poll is anything to go on (and it isn’t anything more than an indicator), the people of Ibiza are in support of the Prosecutor’s get tough stance. Of 423 reactions to the Diario de Ibiza’s report on the subject until the time of writing this report, 83 people expressed their reaction as ‘love’, and only 2 as ‘sad’.

Lidl Ditches Plastic Biodegradable and bio compostable fruit and veg bags will be used throughout the Balearics, the first move of its kind among the big supermarket chains.

Conventional plastic bags have been eliminated from LIDL supermarkets in the Balearics, the new bags are biodegradable and bio compostable with the “OK compost home” seal, guaranteeing biodegradability in domestic compost.

2 Million Euro Cost The new bags cost 4 times more than their ‘single use’ counterparts representing a cost to the company of over 2million euros per year. The ‘bio’ bags take up to a year to decompose whereas their single use counterparts can take up to 500 years to disintegrate.

The removal of plastic bags within their stores and replacing the fruit and veg bags with an environmentally friendly one is part of a global LIDL strategy for the management and

sustainable use of plastics. Part of the strategy is to reduce plastic use by at least 20% before 2025 and guarantee their packaging as 100% recyclable.

The supermarket chain is exceeding the commitments set by the employers of the sector, which focuses on reducing plastic by 21% in fresh products that are packed in stores by 2021.

Lidl Plastics Commitments

3 Fires In An Hour In Cala de Bou Firefighters were kept busy on Monday 10th when 3 fires were declared in Cala de Bou in under an hour.

Emergency services were mobilised at 3.40am due to a fire in the wooded plot of land next to Burgess Street in Cala de Bou. Approximately half an hour later, the emergency services were again called to another fire, this time in a container in Cantabria Street. The final call came at 4.15am for a fire in Jaen Street, again in a container.

All of the fires were quickly extinguished, and the material damage is minor, the Guardia Civil are now investigating the causes of these fires.

items from its stores and is committed to ensuring that all plastic containers of proprietary products are 100% recyclable by 2025  Lidl has stopped the sale of plastic carrier bags totally at all of its 550 Spanish stores. In 2019 this will equate to 100 million fewer plastic bags being produced.

The system has been implemented on the main Santa Eulalia beach which is also highly regarded for being a smoke free beach. If this project is successful, then the plan is to implement it in other beaches in the municipality.

Access is simple, users have to be within reach of the antennas (along the beach and promenade) and activate Wi-Fi. The network name is ‘Santa Eulària’ and clicking this starts the connection procedure. There are two types of connection available – one whereby you receive a message with an individual access code (you will need to request codes each time you use the internet) or access the service using your Facebook account (where you will have access for 24hrs then need to reactivate).

The man of British nationality was seriously injured when he collided with a taxi after driving ‘out of control’ on the Passeig de ses Fonts in San Antonio.

The incident happened at around 5am when officers spotted a man driving a motorcycle without a helmet.

He was weaving in between vehicles at high speed. so the officers followed the man. When the rider passed General Balanzat street he raised his legs and ‘balanced’ while continuing to overtake other vehicles.

The rider continued for more than a kilometre, skipping the five crossings without stopping and even driving in the wrong direction. It was at the Carrer de l’Estrella and Carrer Vara de Rey intersection where the rider crashed into the side of the taxi.

Police officers assisted the rider before he was taken to Can Misses where he was admitted.

Ample 32

change of style in this week’s food & drink section. Instead of telling about the fantastic food we have eaten, we thought we’d share a heads up on some of the menus we can’t wait to try.

We knew Ample 32 had some great food. Hands up, that one we have tried. But we didn’t know about a whole host of new additions, nor the awesome view from their raised terrace. There are plenty of places to watch the sunset, but not so many where you can make it that bit extra special with some true fine dining.

Also, I hope they won’t mind me saying this, not so expensive either. You look at the food, look at the setting, it feels it should cost more. We’re not complaining, doubt you will either.

Canalla by La Cantina Canalla has all the signs of becoming a landmark restaurant in Ibiza, and in more ways than just the food.

Located in what was the infamous Koppas café at the foot of San Antonio’s West End, it’s repurposing as a new gastronomic gem is as clear a sign as you could ever receive that the town and its tourist offer is reinventing itself.

But politics has no place on the Food & drink page, what we are much more excited about is the Canalla menu. Foodies will know that Peruvian Nikkei (Japanese) cuisine has a tradition going back centuries.

Right now it is enjoying global spotlight—its fusion of Asian and American flavours in light and fresh forms tick all the boxes of what the modern metro diner wants for their dinner. But don’t think for a moment it is hype. So tasty, and I’m hooked on Pisco.

Relish Restaurant Another restaurant taking on global inspiration is Relish in Cala de Bou. Their winter was well spent planning an all new Tapas Menu with flavours from the four continents of Europe, America, Asia and Africa.

The new Tapas selection sits alongside a good range of their long held customer favourites, but by the looks of these little numbers we predict hit after hit.

The Relish menu was devised to include a full range of Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Dairy Free options—so good to see dietary needs being treated as a fundamental part of the menu. Perhaps the days of a pasta afterthought are numbered?

Ibosim Brewery All this wonderful food, but what would life be without beer. Good beer. Real beer. Ibosim brew some belters, but this one seems leftfield even for them. Got to try it.

Ibosim Snowden is an exquisitely complex beer of very limited edition, a true sensory experience. With the combination of seven types of malt you get roasted notes, hints of liquorice, raisins and nuts, an intense body, velvety texture and a deep black colour. Its character is completed with the Japanese hops Sorachi Ace and with a subsequent maturation with French oak shavings cured in white rum distilled by their friends from Bows Distillerie. As if not enough, they wanted to gild the lily and make three amazing variations on this basis playing with different additional ingredients. Enjoy it without hurry.

Ibiza Taxi App Dazed & Confused With all that said of the Ibiza Taxi service, I was amazed to see this technology available. I would have expected any mention of anything that could be construed as ‘change’ resulting in years of strikes, protests, threats, and the revolting sight of politicians pandering to them in a way no other special interest group can expect.

Probably The Most Incredible Thing We’ve Written About In Ibiza, Ever!  Nick Gibbs Ibiza Taxis have released a booking app. The app is pretty cool and does things that will seem a little like witchcraft to people who have not used similar software elsewhere in the world. But it isn’t the app itself that makes it a contender for the most incredible thing we’ve ever published. It is the people behind the app, Ibiza Taxis.

Regular readers will know I have given Ibiza’s taxi drivers some considerable stick over the years, and I stand by it being fair and justified.

‘Special Case’ The key point for me has always been that the Taxi drivers consider themselves a special case above all others. They have consistently refused any change to their working practices through technology or other means. Coincidentally our archive edition feature on page 21 this issue has a story 10 years ago this week about the ill fated GPS radio system.

The taxis consider all competition a threat to their trade and that they are entitled to stop that competition regardless of its merits or need, solely on the grounds of it threatening to impact their own earnings. When the idea of a night bus service from Ibiza’s clubs was first raised, the Taxi drivers protested by an Ibiza Town sit in, bringing the town centre to a standstill.

In the same way they have constantly refused to even discuss ways to alleviate the acute shortage of taxis in high season. They protest against illegal taxis but will not discuss allowing more legal licences to be issued.

And they are a law unto themselves on the roads. They drive at insane speeds with apparent impunity, and if you dare to delay them you will have flashing headlights inches from your rear bumper.

Stories of poor taxi service received by the Ibizan are second only to street sellers. Most of those complaints involve dangerous driving or abrupt termination of a journey.

All in all, I am not the Taxi Drivers’ biggest fan, and I am not alone in that view.

Installing it from the Play Store for Android (I couldn’t see any sign of it available for IOS), you are asked for the obvious permissions including location service.

You are then literally ready to hail a cab within seconds.

Having identified your location, the app tells you how long a taxi will take to reach you, and if they are close enough you will even see green ‘free’ taxis on your screen. Quite a lot of them at this time of year.

Additional Functions The app includes options to send your taxi driver a message with additional instructions, which to my cynical mind seems hugely over ambitious, and to apply coupon codes.

Rather more usefully you can enter a destination address to get a fare quote at the outset. I see that function being used by people to get a starting price quote with which they will then barter with the so called ‘worker taxis’. If worker taxis continue to exist at all that is, as with the app removing the need for people to reach out to the illegals for the reasons of communication, it remains to be seen whether availability issues or lower pricing will be enough to make it a worthwhile illegal Ibiza job choice for the what’s app wagons.

Users The play store gives a vague idea on use, stating ‘over 1,000 downloads’ which could take it anywhere from 1,001 to 9,999. Its admittedly limited reviews to date are good, with an overall score of 4.3 Both of the negative comments received so far are from Brits, saying they don’t turn up, though our experience of the app so far is that they do. More importantly in review terms than my limited use, it is given a hearty 5 star rating from my local bar who are called upon to hail tourist taxis several times a night. The good people at BN3 are no doubt enjoying the break from having to endlessly explain the vague possibilities of whether a cab would arrive to now being able to show the holidaymaker how long it would be, what car it is etc.

Amazing, I am writing an article about Ibiza Taxis and it feels that the word ‘efficient’ would not be out of place.

You can be up and running in seconds, and see free Taxis relative to your location

Add your destination for a quote. Book for a later time and date if you don’t need a Taxi right away.

Even add notes for your driver, such as ‘please slow down’ or ‘you’re going to kill us all’.

There is one caveat that must be applied to such unabated adoration. Working well in May and June does not mean it necessarily will in July and August. To get a cab at this time of year has never been so difficult. Whether or not the system will be able to cope when demand outstrips supply we must wait and see. Any such system must face challenges and problems. The question is whether the drivers will support it through its tribulations.

I hope so, as on all evidence to date, it is brilliant. Credit where it is due, well done Ibiza Taxis. Did I just say that?

Ibiza Gay Pride 2019 Various locations, Ibiza, 11-15 June  Claire B From June 11 to 15 Ibiza Gay Pride takes place on the island, with a 4-day programme featuring activities for all ages, from films, a book reading, theatre, drag shows and performers, parties and the march for the rights of the LGTBIQ+ community on Saturday, June 15. With the Ibiza LGTB Association behind the event, the motto for this year is ‘love is a human right and diversity a reality’. Gay Pride is still an important worldwide event, and even though Ibiza is a very tolerant and open-minded place, the experiences for many people around the world are still very different. As well as the main programme of activities there are also a number of club parties, plus each night in the bars on Calle Alfonso XII and Calle de la Virgen there will be DJs, drag queens and much more.

The march is still a very important part of Gay Pride around the world, giving visibility on the streets and promoting equality for the LGTBIQ+ community.

Taking place on Saturday June 15 it begins at 7pm from the Fishermen’s Guild in the Port of Ibiza, reaching the Avenida de los Andenes, in the Marina. Everyone in Ibiza is encouraged to participate in the march, which will be a colourful, loud and fun procession, based on previous years’ experience. After the march, the manifesto will be read by Topacio Fresh followed by a party for diversity, tolerance and respect, directed by Sandra Love with performances from Nalaya and Selena, plus other DJs and performers.

Liberation & Subjugation (Continued from page 1) Subjugation Among the joy and celebration of sexual liberation this week, we must not forget that Ibiza is home to a group of visible but invisible people for whom choice, freedom of expression, and even notions of identity, are concepts beyond their comprehension. Reports this week of an Ibiza Tripadvisor for Prostitutes, where women are rated for their paid sexual performance, show that our society is not as advanced as we would sometimes like to think. Such an appalling concept.

Ibiza’s sex workers are all around us, visible but invisible.

Some small number may have choice, but the vast majority are subjugated and exploited by evil men who prey upon weakness or social need, or simply enslave.

Quite recently we reported on a police operation which found 5 Chinese women held as slaves and forced into prostitution in an Ibiza Town apartment. Slaves, living

among us, as neighbours.

Though police action is sometimes taken, I would guesstimate one significant action a year, it seems that the vast majority of prostitution is allowed to continue with tacit acceptance.

Take a walk around Marina Botafoch any night and you will see so many stunning young girls offering sex.

Whatever their individual stories, it is doubtful any set off on their journey expecting to be where they find themselves now. Which of us could accept a scenario where passers by, ‘normal people’, walked past our own daughter forced into prostitution and did nothing to help?

Gay Pride is a wonderful and positive event in Ibiza’s social calendar, but as shown by this tawdry little website this week, we must not forget that whilst we can

Davy and his band are putting on the concert for free and has chosen Ibiza to launch his album because the island is the "heart of music" and a special place in the heart of himself and his family.

Davy Lyons is originally from Wexford, Ireland but now lives in Barcelona, the music is folk style, with musicians (guitar, violin, piano & double bass) providing an interesting twist and upbeat tempo to the lyrics, telling stories in ballad form with a more modern intensity.

A quick look at the Trasmapi website sees ferries leaving every 30 minutes from Ibiza with those that carry cars (Castaví Jet) at 09.30, 11.30, 16.00, 18.00 and 20.30. Returns are also 30 minutes apart with their car carrying ferry (Castaví Jet) at 10.30, 12.30, 17.00 and 19.30.

A day trip for 2 adults, 2 children and a car is around 142.50€, whereas a day trip using Aquabus for 2 adults and 2 children costs 60€. It is best to shop around for your specific needs but the following have routes:-

Ibiza Town Welcome to Ibiza Town & Friends Ibiza Town, Marina Botafoch, Talamanca, Playa d’en Bossa & Figueretes. All are very different in character and content. Ibiza Town, the island capital, has its own special bohemian chic with a touch of freak. The D’alt Vila is home to some of Ibiza’s greatest cultural and historic gems. Marina Botafoch oozes new money, and even if you haven’t got it, some enjoy just being around it. Figueretes is a ’real’ neighbourhood mixed with Tourism, and in our opinion it mixes well. And Playa d’en Bossa is Ibiza’s resort to have undergone most development and change in recent years, and home to the new names at the top of the Superclub league.

However there is some good sense to us grouping such odd bedfellows. They all connect in an unbroken urban area and so movement between the areas is easy and regular. Aside from the mid August meltdown, a walk from one end to the other is not great exertion. We love the Ibiza Town strip for exactly this reason. It gives you the choice of so many different facets of Ibiza, at most a few euros in a taxi away.

Island of Bes Ibiza derives its name from the god, Bes, brought along with the first Phoenician settlers in 654 BC. Bes was said to drive off all evil, and amazed at the lack of any sort of venomous creatures on the island, the Phoenicians thought it to be the island of Bes. The name was then developed by the Romans as Ebusus, from which the modern Eivissa (Catalan) and Ibiza (Castellano Spanish) derive.

San Antonio In the 14th century, the church of Sant Antoni was built, and the city began to emerge around it. With the threat of privateers and pirates, in the 16th century fortification of the churches took place. To ensure its strategic position many watchtowers were erected along the coastline in the 17th century. Surrounded by impressive cliffs, the fortress of Towers d´en Lluc rises. The relics of which can be found to this day. In Santa Agnès there is an underground chapel, very well preserved, built inside a cave.

Welcome To San Antonio  A little history …

While many come here to revel in the party atmosphere, the origin of Sant Antoni de Portmany can be traced back to prehistoric times with artefacts such as early cave paintings and bronze axes being found in the area. The Romans gave it the name Portus Magnus, and the Arabs called it Portumany, then the small fishing village was then forged as an urban centre after the reconquest of King Juame I.

San Antonio Bay Welcome To The Bay

Most tourists will have booked it as San Antonio Bay, most locals call it Cala de Bou, and its official name is Bahia de Portmany, so let’s just settle on The Bay, an area as diverse as its many names.

The ‘Bay’ suggested in the name is actually just the Southern half of the entire San Antonio bay. It was given the addition descriptor by travel agents as a way of distinguishing it from the main San Antonio town, which was felt important in reflecting its hotels’ more family orientated offerings.

To confuse matters further ‘The Bay’ that is really half of the bay, is itself comprised of several smaller bays that line its coast from Port Des Torrent at its most Westerly point, all the way to Pinet Playa, the last substantial beach to the East. The coast between the series of beaches is of rugged rocks, as in the feature photo above at Punta de ses Fontanelles.

des Calo and Carrer Cala de Bou, known locally as the lower bay road, and these are complimented by a good selection of restaurants dotted along the shore on the various beaches.

The Bay is in the midst of a major period of redevelopment. Over recent years and still ongoing, many of its midmarket hotel and apartment complexes have received multimillion euro upgrades, many emerging as 4 and 5 star luxury accommodation, reflecting a general change happening throughout Ibiza.

The result is a melting pot of styles and services, from simple low cost cafés and bars to an ever increasing number of chic cocktail bars and eateries, from the most basic family budget apartments to the very top tariffs of Ibiza’s 5 star elite. Though the changes are coming thick and fast, Cala de Bou has a strong sense of community among its local population, with a high proportion of native British and Irish year-round residents and workers. The sunset strip is the world famous home to the setting sun like no other. Home to Café Mambo and its adjacent siblings Savannah, Mint and Fresh among others, settling back with a view of the setting sun, Mojito in hand, as the DJ plays some Balearic beats is hard to beat. Just remember to put your phone down long enough to experience it yourself.

Of course things are a little more pricey there than elsewhere, that is to be expected, but factor in that the strip hosts some of the world’s biggest DJs playing pre-party sets No trip to Ibiza is complete without a sunset on the strip, and if you want to do it in the finest style, Mambo has to be the place to go. Their terrace enjoys spectacular views of the sunset, and you’ll be entertained by some of the world’;s top DJs with Mambos nightly pre-party warm up.

David’s Pizzeria (#14 on the map) David’s is renowned for its Italian-French cuisine and they have a vast menu, including 35 different pizzas to choose from, plus the option of turning any one into Calzone. But if pizza’s not your thing, they also have a selection of pastas, salads, fish and meat dishes to tempt you. David’s also offer a takeaway service and a menu del dia for 12.50€, available till 8.30pm .

Tulp Beach Café, Beach Promenade Tulp Beach Café is located right on San Antonio’s beachfront Promenade. An oasis of bohemian chic laid back cool, it is our default choice for daytime calm, and a regular one for night time fun too. Tulp offer an extensive drink and cocktail selection, and a menu to suit every appetite from a tasty tapas to Dutch and international meals and to cap it all they have spectacular sunset views. La Cantina Portmany, Fountains Square La Cantina is a bar and restaurant right on San Antonio’s fountains square. They have undertaken a total restoration over the winter months. You won’t find a better place for a traditional Paella or some fresh caught local fish. But it also offers far more. The La Cantina kitchen is also home to 3 specialist chefs each taking care over their respective Thai, Indian and TexMex division.

As with its sister Mambo along the strip, it is difficult to know whether to put Savannah in food or drink or entertainment— both are winners in our book.

On the food front we consider their Lobster, washed down with a few cocktails for sunset, one of the finest moments you can enjoy in Ibiza. But we plumped for entertainment as Savannah have a great line up of local legend DJs in their backroom this year. Offering a far more informal and intimate alternative to the super-clubs, it’s a worthy choice for your late night dancing needs.

Capitulo Dos, Homemade Italian Ice Cream With 31 flavours of traditional Italian ice cream homemade on the premises, there is literally something for everyone. Vegan and gluten free options are also available and this parlour is set in the quieter San Antonio church square, a great place to relax. So the only question is, which flavour do you choose?

All this takes place on their beachfront terrace which also has a great range of food available day and night.

Getting Around Walking & Cycling.

Aside from the inevitable diversions into its many bars and cafés, the length of the Bay’s main tourist street can be covered on foot in a brisk half hour.

It is possible to walk the coastline, though there are areas of rocks and uneven ground to cover between the coves and beaches. There are several shops renting cycles along the bay.

It is hard to know what category to list Donnegans, as they do many things, and do them all very well. Day and night it is a bar with a welcome as warm as the draught Guinness and Magners are cold. They show all sports including hurling, and have a great menu of reasonably priced home cooked food from snacks to full meals.

But it is perhaps their entertainment that really sets them apart. With a regular line up of live performers with the common denominator of making sure everyone has a great time.

A very pleasant way to get to San Antonio town is to use one of the water taxis that cross the bay at half hourly intervals day and into the evening, and in high season into the night.

The first of this summer’s Rock Nights takes place at Pikes on Thursday June 13, after the Dorado live show from Viva Suecia. The opening night will be headed by resident DJ Colin Peters, with Dorian DJ, Black Honey DJ set, Bandoleros and Lola von Dage. The party continues on every Thursday night from 10pm until September 19.

Solomun+LIVE Ibiza Town, Destino

Back for 2019, Diynamic label boss Solomun returns to Ibiza with his Solomun+1 party on Sunday’s at Pacha, making it the second longest residency at the iconic club, which is no doubt a testament to the German ‘techo legend’.

In a twist this summer, Solomun will be bringing Solomun+LIVE to Destino for some open-air poolside clubbing. A spin on his original winning formula at Pacha, these four ‘expertly crafted’ events will welcome live acts as his ‘+1’.

For the opening on the 20th June, Luxembourg’s Francesco Tristano ‘merges the worlds of composition and classical with experimental techno; embodying the forward-thinking nature of Solomun’’s residency’. The 20th July sees Berlin-based electronic production band, GHEIST (Live) bringing their progressive sound seeing house and techno textures blended to deliver a melodic journey. August the 8th brings Techno marching band, MEUTE (Live) and they are sure to deliver an alternative danceable experience fusing driving hypnotic techno with lively and expressive brass band music for their performance. On the 4th October Solomun will add as his ‘+1’ Northern Irish underground upstart, New Jackson (Live) promising to bring his jammin’, disco-tinted brand of house to the series closing party.

This new concept is bound to draw a crowd and if you’re a techno lover certainly not a party to be missed with just 4 events taking place this season.

Money  Bettina Lorenz, Mortgage Broker Spain’s new mortgage law comes as a result of a European directive back in 2014. The European directive was focussed on consumer protection. The Spanish law extends this in several ways.

The new law was passed this year, and published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on March 15, stating the purpose of "Guaranteeing a safe, agile and effective legal regime that protects the type of operations (the granting of loans and credits with real estate mortgage guarantees) being a requirement that derives not only from the obligations imposed by European Union Law, but also from the undoubted benefits that it affords for the economy of our country".

The new law aims to "enhance legal security, transparency and understanding of contracts and the clauses that comprise them, as well as the fair balance between the parties." The credit crunch (crisis as it is known in Spain) did a lot of damage in this area, and regardless of European directive, many would agree that Spain’s mortgage regulations were in urgent need of overhaul as a result.

The regulations cover three different aspects.  First, it contains rules of transparency and conduct that impose obligations on lenders and credit intermediaries.  Second, it regulates the legal regime of real estate credit intermediaries and real estate lenders.  Finally, it establishes the sanctioning regime for breaches of the obligations.

Key Components 1. New distribution of mortgage expenses.  To be paid by the bank: The agency (gestoría) Register The notary The taxes (IAJD) Their copy of the deed  To be paid by the client: The appraisal His copy of the deed As we can see, this distribution is a clear improvement for the consumer, who currently supports most of the coasts.

2. Early repayment becomes cheaper.

In a variable mortgage, the maximum charge for early repayment can be one of these two options:  0.25% only during the first three years of contract life  0.15% only during the first five years of the loan term In a fixed mortgage, the maximum charge for early repayment can reach the following limits:  2% during the first 10 years  1.5% for the rest of the term

3. Commissions for delay

Spain’s New Mortgage Law in Practice; What is Changing?  Introduction by Nick Gibbs, Editor Spain’s new Mortgage Laws are now in force. But the law also has important changes relevant to existing mortgage holders too.

6. Multi-currency mortgages

4. 0% ‘floor clause’

For the benefit of people unfamiliar with the concept of floor clauses, Spain has had an ongoing legal dispute following mortgages that were issued under terms known as floor clauses, where the initial interest was very low, but rocketed during the credit crunch years.

Many people lost their homes as a result and the banks ultimately lost their case with the clauses being declared illegal. Many people in Spain are now in the process of recovering money from the banks.

That is the background, but the new regulation of mortgages specifically prohibits the application of a minimum interest in variable mortgages. Therefore, the banks can never incorporate the floor clauses anymore and they are not allowed to consider a 0% Euribor when it is quoted in negative. However, a minimum rate of 0% is established by default for all mortgage loans.

5. New regulations on changing lender

With the new mortgage law, we go back to the origins of 1994, when by legislation it allowed clients to change banks whenever they wished. This legislation was modified in 2007 and the client had to stay with the current bank if it offered an offer that matched that of the other bank. With the new mortgage law, you can leave even if your bank matches the offer.

Subrogation / Novation of variable-to-fixed-type contract The costs of registration fees are reduced.

Notary fees are reduced.

The subrogation and novation commission are limited to: 0.15% commission for the first 3 years. From the 4th year does not apply.

New flexibility is introduced governing the ability to transfer mortgages to other currencies.

7. Limits on linked products

This point has caused a lot of confusion in the implementation of the new law. It relates to the linking of secondary products to a mortgage interest rate. Typical examples are life or household insurance, the bank giving a lower mortgage rate if these products are also purchased from them.

In future, the products that can be linked for the reduction of interest are limited, but not completely eliminated.

With the new regulation of mortgage loans, the linking of products can only be contracted when it gives a benefit to the consumer. This means that you can take out compulsory life or household insurance with a different insurance company away from the bank and it will not affect interest. However, the linking of cards and pension plans shown to be beneficial to the borrower will not be exempted.

This clause also specifies that banks cannot pay their staff according to the number of mortgage loans granted, a step to remove the temptation of overselling by banks,. Also that the banks must demonstrate that all applications have been rigorously studied.

8. More regulation for financial intermediaries

The new mortgage law also devotes a whole chapter to financial intermediaries (also called mortgage brokers) and private lenders.

The activity of these agencies and companies will be supervised by the Bank of Spain, although those that only work in a specific region will be controlled by the corresponding autonomous community. The brokers have to be registered in the registry of the Bank of Spain. Before, not all of the mortgage brokers were registered in the current valid state registry.

Agenda Noche de San Juan  Rhian King Sunday 23 June, Various Locations June 24th is the Patron Saint’s day of John the Baptist or San Juan. It is widely celebrated all over the world including mainland Spain, and Ibiza is no exception.

Being the patron saint of the town of San Juan, the fiesta and celebrations there are taken very seriously, but there are also celebrations in other parts of the island. The night of San Juan (La Noche de San Juan) is usually celebrated with music starting in the evening of the 23rd with bonfires and/or fireworks at midnight to see in the 24th. As it occurs just a few days after the Summer Solstice (the longest day on June 21st), it is also used as a celebration of the start of the summer.

Traditionally, and this still happens in some places, people jump over the bonfires, or run over hot coals, as a way of purifying the body and soul. Traditionally, you should throw into the fire something old that represents something you no longer want in your life or a piece of paper where you are meant to write those things you want to change. It is also customary in Ibiza to eat San Juan macaroni, made with curly noodles cooked in milk, sugar, cinnamon and lemon rind. Other typical cuisine of Ibiza, such as orelletes, wine or traditional spirits are also eaten in family homes.

Sant Joan de Labritja

From 9pm to 4am there will be an artisan and creative market of recycled and handmade products. At 10.30pm Tom Mayor will perform live in concert. The parade of puppets will be begin at 11.45pm as well as the ritual of the four elements in the Plaza de España.

At Midnight the Bonfires of San Juan or ‘Foguerons’ will start behind the church. Here you can jump the bonfires and purify your body and soul.

Once the bonfires are finished, the party will continue with DJs Djamal playing Disco, Funk & Soul on the old Town Hall Street, Javi Box and The Selecters with music from the 60s, 70s and 80s in the Plaza de España .

Ibiza Town

In Ibiza Town, San Joan is celebrated on the beaches of ses Figueretes and Talamanca. New to this year’s celebrations though, the council will distribute firewood and allow people to start bonfires in specifically allocated areas.

9. Minimum of 12 missed payments for property repossession.

This is one of the most important measures of the Law regulating Mortgages.

Specifically, the bank cannot initiate the repossession foreclosure process until the following limits are reached:  Minimum 12 unpaid instalments or up to 3% of the unpaid loaned capital if it occurs in the first half of the mortgage.  Minimum 15 unpaid instalments or up to 7% of the unpaid loaned capital if it occurs in the second half of the mortgage.

10. Protection of the future mortgaged: transparency and clarity.  The New Process And The Role Of Notaries

The entry into force of the new Law regulating mortgage agreements on June 16 has involved the promotion of notaries in their role as impartial adviser to the consumer and guarantor of legality and transparency in the whole process of buying and selling residential housing.

The purpose of all this modification is that the client is better informed and knows what they are going to sign.

For this reason, the borrower will have the right to go to the notary free of charge for an explanation.

Until now the consumer had just three days to go to the notary to consult on any doubts about the mortgage loan and the sale of the home. Now this is increased to ten days. The consumer can choose the notary by location, trust or prior knowledge. Price will not be an issue as all notaries charge the same for the same service, with the option of making a maximum 10% discount.

The notary will clarify of all the clauses and must inform the consumer of any abusive clause.

The bank's proposal has a binding offer character for 10 days, that means, the consumer can back down, but the entity cannot.

When the notary has received all the documentation and verified that it is correct, the client meets with them without the presence of real estate agents, banks or promoters.

If something is missing, the notary requests it and the ten-day period is stopped.

If everything is complete and the client agrees, the notary will draw up a notarial certificate, free of charge, in which he will record the proven facts and the explanations given to the consumer. In this way, "the process is

Finally, at midnight there will be the lighting of the bonfires of San Juan.

Wherever you are in Ibiza, there will be somewhere you can experience this magical night it is highly recommended, even if you choose not to ‘jump the fire’.

The notaries are going to dedicate more time to the consumer, but the majority of them want the change as a way of guaranteeing the security and transparency of their service.

The likely reality of the new mortgage regulations regarding bank charges.

At first glance it seems that the new Law regulating Mortgages greatly benefits the borrower.

However, it is estimated that the bank will charge the client in the form of other commissions so that its overall income from the provision of a mortgage minimally does not reduce. What you gain from one hand is taken away by another.

It is expected that each bank will take different measures, in case of raising the mortgage loan interest this could mean an increase of 0.215%, or apply a higher administrative fee.

These possible increases will depend on the relationship between the client and the bank or the negotiation of a professional broker.

News Snippets Prosecutor’s Report The prosecution team investigating the bribery case involving the former president of the Partido Popular, José Juan Cardona, have composed a damning report on the high-flying local politician which, if he is found guilty, could see him spend the next 17 years in prison.

The case revolves around the Balearic Government's Consortium for Economic Development from 2003-2007 under the previous PP-run Govern, which the document claims misused up to €1.5 million. The 82-page report goes through each case under suspicion, and there are more than 100, one by one, with the conclusion being that Cardona knew exactly what was happening and was an integral part in the fraud

Nine arrests were made back in October 2008, including that of the director general of the Consortium, Kurt Viaene and Antonia Ordinas. Both were working under Cardona, with Ordinas eventually claiming he was involved in all of the fraudulent activity.

Ordinas even led officers to €200,000 she had buried in her luxury chalet in Portol, Mallorca. She remained in prison for the next few months before eventually being released on bail. She is also set to stand trial, but it is Cardona who is likely to be the most high-profile casualty.

The scam revolved around the Consortium, which was in charge of marketing and promotion of the four islands.

The prosecution team claims it fabricated a total of 130 reports, charging for each, and then ciphering off the money. In some cases, the reports were fictitious and did not exist, in others similar information was simply downloaded from the internet, most of which was not relevant and never used by the Govern. In all of the cases, however, according to the report, the invoices were paid, with some of the money going to pay party expenses and the rest going straight to the pockets of the people involved.

The public prosecution team insisted none of these operations would have been possible without Cardona's full collaboration. They continued by ridiculing his earlier declaration that he had merely signed all of the documents without reading them, revealing that on some of the documents he had made notes, which showed he had had to have read their content.

In one such case the Consortium paid a whopping €45,000 for a report about the Mallorcan pearl which was never produced. In another, in a project named Honey Moon, €240,000 was awarded to a company connected to the three, without being put out to tender or without even a contract being drawn up.

Drop in Numbers Hotel occupancy was down eleven per cent during May, as figures released by the Hotel Federation confirmed the tough start to the season. Federation President, Juanjo Riera, claimed the results highlighted the complicated year in which the island was currently emerged, as well as Ibiza's dependency on the clubs. Overall occupancy in Ibiza reached 46.55%, a fall of 11.3 per cent from last year.

Voter Apathy In Ibiza just 33.9 per cent of those able to vote made it to the polling booth. However, of the 29,256 people who did make it, 47.17% voted for the PP Partido Popular, 41.52% for PSOE (the Socialist party), with the five other parties collecting 8.01% of the vote between them, with the remaining either nulls or abstentions.

She invites you to accompany her in her unique portrait of Ibiza over the past 15 years, from different prisms: the natural environment that surrounded her when she was growing up, the music and club culture and the essence and idiosyncrasies the people and characters that inhabit the island, including herself.

“For me photographs are experiences, and I try to express myself with them with honesty, love, and audacity. It's my way of life, my way of interpreting and confronting the reality.” Isabel Flores.

Music Scene Photography

Some of the photos on display are of great figures of the international music scene and club culture, such as Lenny Kravitz, Lady Gaga, Carl Cox, Sven Väth, Faithless, The Prodigy, Luciano, Rudimental and DJ Harvey. Also, for the first time photography will be transformed into music, thanks to the pioneering system of Musical Vision, a technology used for the

blind.

Amongst her personal projects, La Skimal was the inhouse photographer at Ibiza Rocks for many years and also takes photos for Essential Ibiza and other local

organisations.

Kenny Scharf La Nave Salinas La Nave Salinas reopens its doors for the summer on Saturday June 15 with a large-scale exhibition of recent work from American artist Kenny Scharf entitled ‘Universalis’. Kenny Scharf is the inventor of American Pop Surrealism and one of the great living legends of the 80s New York art scene. He was prominent in the East Village art scene during the 80s alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and

Keith Haring. Commissioned by art collector and founder of La Nave Salinas Lio Malca, this is the first solo exhibition of Kenny Scharf in Spain for more than two decades.

Background

Born in Hollywood in 1958 and submerged in the aesthetics of the 50s and 60s, television, advertising and early cartoons, Scharf was provided with much aesthetic material during his childhood.
