“Welcome to Ibiza ... was declared of Important Cultural significance.

Ball Pagès is a traditional Ibizan & Formentera folk dance of unknown origin which dates back to time immemorial and has been preserved ever since.

This traditional dance is displayed every Saturday from 9pm at "es Martell", (in front of the Corsairs Monument) at Ibiza port.

Here’s a little inside knowledge on this ancient tradition.

The Costumes  Female Costume

A black dress known as a "Gonella", this is the most ancient form of dress and is made from wool and linen.

White dress, made from cotton with a white apron.

Coloured dress, the most recent form, the most "modern", may be accompanied by a "sombrero" (hat), without jewellery.

Footballers and Officials Arrested Over La Liga Match Fixing Leeds Player Samu Sáiz Arrested in Ibiza National Police will be making 11 arrests of players and officials in reported match fixing that took place last year.

Ibiza Pirate Police to Tackle Illegal Boat Charters The Department of Territory and Mobility has created a new unit comprising an inspector and two management technicians, to combat illegal yachts operating on the islands.

Police are investigating an alleged match fixing ring targeting the top three football leagues and several people have been arrested.

The National Police have said that its officers have carried out nine searches across Spain as part of their investigation into match fixing, money laundering and criminal gangs.

“We’re expecting to make 11 arrests, among them current and retired first division players, current second division players and club presidents and managers,” the force said in a statement.

“The operation has established that those under investigation made deals with different players to ‘fix’ at least three games in the first, second and third divisions.”

According to The Guardian, the statement said that an attempt to fix a division three game had proved unsuccessful which led to players making up their losses by throwing another game. Police also added that a second division game had seen a surge in betting, in fact 14 times the normal amount of money wagered.

“Once the match-fixing had been accepted, payment was made – always in cash and in two instalments one before the game and once the agreed result had been achieved,” the police statement said.

Operation ‘Oikos’

La Liga Suspicions

The national police said the operation—carried out by Europol, the General Directorate of Gaming and La Liga—had established a familiar pattern.

Matches were selected and efforts made to generate the most money by agreeing combined bets on half-time results or the number of corners taken. Members of the football teams were then approached.

La Liga reported their suspicions last year after a division two match between Sociedad Deportiva Huesca and Gimnástic de Tarragona and after another football match between Huesca and Nastic, sources have confirmed that complaints were filed.

The news came following calls to curb the many illegal moorings that are blighting the island's coastal area, and the proliferation of illegal marine leisure companies involved in the charter of boats, and also increasingly, the use of boats for accommodation.

The announcement was made in a meeting by the department head, Marc Pons, with representatives of the nautical sector.

The minister reported that actions for infractions had risen quickly, and indicated they were proving effective.

In the whole of 2017, there were only 8 cases opened. In 2018 this had risen to 25. But in 2019 there are already 68 cases presenting.

 “We are in time to save it, but we have to act now”, Manu San Felix, Marine Biologist

Rugby Star Jansin Turgut Seriously Injured In Car Park Fall The 23-year-old ex-England Academy captain was taken to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic at around 3am on Monday morning after reportedly falling from the third storey of Ibiza airport’s car park.

In a report the emergency services explained that the young man suffered multiple injuries including a severe head injury, he is currently in the intensive care unit where his prognosis remains unclear.

The Guardia Civil and Judicial police are investigating the circumstances of the fall, and according to one eyewitnesses’ statement, the young Brit was seen ‘falling into the void’.

It is understood that Jansin Turgut came to Ibiza for a holiday, it is unclear whether he had just arrived or was leaving the island.

Salford Red Devils Turgut had not played for the Salford Red Devils since April due to a reported breach of club protocol, his contract with Salford was terminated earlier this month for an “off-thefield” matter.

A statement issued by Salford Rugby Club said “Salford Red Devils are saddened to hear of the severe injuries suffered by former player Jansin Turgut.”

“The club are currently in contact with Jansin’s family, while further details are being established.”

“Salford Red Devils wish Jansin a full and speedy recovery and request that all supporters remain respectful of his family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

Update The 23-year-old remains in a medically induced coma after his three storey fall from Ibiza airport´s car park. On arrival to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic Jansin´s injuries were life-threatening he has made remarkable progress since then. A CT scan on Wednesday has revealed no signs of brain damage and his heart, liver and kidneys are functioning on their own.

His kidneys had initially failed due to toxins being released into the body as a result of the severity of his injuries which saw his hips, legs, arms and hands broken, fractures to his spine and every bone in his face broken.

A pressure drone placed inside his skull to relieve the pressure has also been removed, and with no immediate concern to his brain, he will be moved from the private clinic to Can Misses where should his condition remain stable he may then be transferred to Son Espases in Majorca.

Family by his side His family would like their privacy respected at this difficult time, they are at his bedside and his mother Carol Butler told the Hull Daily Mail “It’s fantastic news.

“The CT scan shows no brain damage and the plan is now to move Jansin from this private clinic to an NHS style hospital on the island.

“It’s phenomenal the way he is fighting and while it’s still a very concerning situation right now, we are all feeling so much more positive and this news about his brain is such a relief. We feel lifted by this news.”

“The British consulate have been amazing and the work they have done behind the scenes in this difficult time has made such a big difference, as has the help of Rugby League Cares,” added Mrs Butler, who will remain on her own alongside Jansin when the family head back to Hull later this week.

“We know there are weeks, months ahead of treatment and operations, but this news has really lifted everyone.”

Crowdfunding Almost £21,000 has already been donated in crowdfunding appeals which have been set up to help pay for the private treatment Jansin has received, the bill of which could easily be over £100,000.

Mediterranean Sea is the Most Polluted in the World Marine Biologist and explorer for National Geographic Manu San Felix has presented his documentary ´Lets save our Mediterranean` in Barcelona on Wednesday, in which he denounces that it is the most polluted sea in the world but insists that “we are in time to save it, but we have to act now”.

The documentary shows the current state of the seabed on the Spanish Mediterranean coast and the possible solutions that can prevent further deterioration.

Manu has devoted more than 30 years to the study and fight for the conservation of the sea, which is reflected in his documentary, starting in Formentera and travelling the waters to show how man has reduced one of the richest enclaves on the planet to “one of the most threatened”. He hopes to raise awareness that it is possible to return the Mediterranean to the state it was 80 years ago.

3rd June Premiere 8 million tonnes of plastics end up in our oceans and with more than 250,000 in the remotest corners of the planet. That is the equivalent of five bags full of plastic for every 30cm of coastline, according to the ´Sea of Plastics´ report by the Aquae Foundation.

A study by Greenpeace shows that between 21-45% of microplastic particles end up in the Mediterranean basin, where 95% of the waste is plastic. The percentage drops to 60/80% worldwide.

“More than 134 species are contaminated by ingestion of plastic in the Mediterranean, which is already the most polluted sea in the world, although we are not aware of everything we have lost,” said San Felix. “as individuals you can take action, how to react correctly against the use of plastic or recycle correctly, with which the problem will be mitigated”.

He concluded “the human being has a hard time changing their habits, but when they are forced to do so they end up changing them, so it is imperative that we realize that it is a reversible process at the moment, but it will not be for a long time, we have to act now”.

The documentary will premiere on the National Geographic Spain channel on the 3rd June at 10pm to commemorate World Oceans Day (8th June).

5 Arrested For Courthouse & Es Vive Fires Police have linked the crimes to a criminal gang. Photo Vicent Mari National Police have arrested five members of a criminal gang for setting fire to the Ibiza Courthouse in an attempt to destroy records of proceedings against them, as well as the arson of the Es Vive squat which caused the death of Rossanna Venturini, following a discussion about drugs.

José Luis Santa Fe, the Regional Chief of Police Operations, José Manuel Hernández Núñez, the Commissioner of Ibiza, and Fernando García Crespo, head of the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV), held a press conference today giving details of “Operation Themis”, which has been carried out by a group of agents formed specifically to handle this case.

According to the Diario de Ibiza, two of the detainees both imprisoned on Thursday without the chance of bail, are accused of being the material perpetrators of the fires in the Courthouse and with regards to the Es Vive fire, they are charged with murder, causing injury, arson and belonging to a criminal gang.

Of the rest of the detainees, one is serving 16 years in prison and two others have been charged and released. A sixth person is being investigated.

Courthouse Fire National Police immediately discovered that the fire at the Ibiza Courthouse on January 21st was intentional after finding a ladder close to the origin of the fire and a backpack with ‘fire lighters’ nearby. The fire of the courts burned all the files of the Court of Instruction

British Man Dies In Central Park Hotel San Antonio  The Guardia Civil have reported the death of a

33 year old British man in the Piscis Park Hotel located on the Egg roundabout in San Antonio.  Photo, pinched from Jet2.com The body was found at 4pm today, Wednesday 29th May. The Guardia Civil report says that the body shows no signs of violence, and “all indications that the cause of death could be related to the consumption of narcotic substances and alcohol”.

The statement continues to say that they must wait for an autopsy report which will be carried out by Ibiza’s Legal Medical Institute.

The report also states the room number of the deceased, however we choose not to publish that information until confirmation that his relatives have been advised.  Error The first report indicated that the death occurred in the Number 1 and about 700 files of the Number 2 Court of Instruction. Sewage Spill Causes Ibiza Town Port “Cascade of Excrement” Heavy rainfall at the weekend was blamed as the causal effect for more problems for the much maligned sewerage infrastructure in Ibiza Town.

One onlooker was quoted by the Diario de Ibiza as saying they witnessed a “cascade of excrement” close to Pier A, part of the exclusive Port Magnus area that continues to

charge among the highest mooring rates in the world despite what are becoming almost routine problems with raw sewage spilling out from Ibiza Town.

“Overwhelmed” Technicians of Aqualia traced the problem back to a pipe in Avenue de España. They said it had become overwhelmed by the sudden heavy rains and the spill occurred when the pipe became blocked.

The port had a film of brown water caused by fecal matter, and though the worst of it had dissipated in 24 hours, there was still clear discolouration and clumps of toilet paper and wipes.

Local traders and residents have complained for some time at the regular problems, and the effect of the foul stench on the area and its tourism.

Editorial Comment We are reporting the contents of the Guardia Civil statement. For readers from the UK and elsewhere, we would state that this type of speculation in cause of death is quite routine in Ibiz, though it would be extremely unlikely for the UK police to make such a snap public statement.

It may be drink and drugs, it may not be. We do not know and will report further when we do.

In the meantime we hope that whatever tragic circumstances resulted in the man’s death, it will not be devalued in the casual and comedic manner that is becoming commonplace among a small minority of local people.

San Antonio In the 14th century, the church of Sant Antoni was built, and the city began to emerge around it. With the threat of privateers and pirates, in the 16th century fortification of the churches took place. To ensure its strategic position many watchtowers were erected along the coastline in the 17th century. Surrounded by impressive cliffs, the fortress of Towers d´en Lluc rises. The relics of which can be found to this day. In Santa Agnès there is an underground chapel, very well preserved, built inside a cave.

Welcome To San Antonio  A little history …

While many come here to revel in the party atmosphere, the origin of Sant Antoni de Portmany can be traced back to prehistoric times with artefacts such as early cave paintings and bronze axes being found in the area. The Romans gave it the name Portus Magnus, and the Arabs called it Portumany, then the small fishing village was then forged as an urban centre after the reconquest of King Juame I.

San Antonio Bay Welcome To The Bay

Most tourists will have booked it as San Antonio Bay, most locals call it Cala de Bou, and its official name is Bahia de Portmany, so let’s just settle on The Bay, an area as diverse as its many names.

The ‘Bay’ suggested in the name is actually just the Southern half of the entire San Antonio bay. It was given the addition descriptor by travel agents as a way of distinguishing it from the main San Antonio town, which was felt important in reflecting its hotels’ more family orientated offerings.

To confuse matters further ‘The Bay’ that is really half of the bay, is itself comprised of several smaller bays that line its coast from Port Des Torrent at its most Westerly point, all the way to Pinet Playa, the last substantial beach to the East. The coast between the series of beaches is of rugged rocks, as in the feature photo above at Punta de ses Fontanelles.

Most of the hotels, bars and restaurants line Carrer

des Calo and Carrer Cala de Bou, known locally as the lower bay road, and these are complimented by a good selection of restaurants dotted along the shore on the various beaches.

The Bay is in the midst of a major period of redevelopment. Over recent years and still ongoing, many of its midmarket hotel and apartment complexes have received multimillion euro upgrades, many emerging as 4 and 5 star luxury accommodation, reflecting a general change happening throughout Ibiza.

The result is a melting pot of styles and services, from simple low cost cafés and bars to an ever increasing number of chic cocktail bars and eateries, from the most basic family budget apartments to the very top tariffs of Ibiza’s 5 star elite. Though the changes are coming thick and fast, Cala de Bou has a strong sense of community among its local population, with a high proportion of native British and Irish year-round residents and workers. Their terrace enjoys spectacular views of the sunset, and you’ll be entertained by some of the world’;s top DJs with Mambos nightly pre-party warm up.

David’s Pizzeria (#14 on the map) David’s is renowned for its Italian-French cuisine and they have a vast menu, including 35 different pizzas to choose from, plus the option of turning any one into Calzone. But if pizza’s not your thing, they also have a selection of pastas, salads, fish and meat dishes to tempt you. David’s also offer a takeaway service and a menu del dia for 12.50€, available till 8.30pm .

La Cantina Portmany, Fountains Square La Cantina is a bar and restaurant right on San Antonio’s fountains square. They have undertaken a total restoration over the winter months. You won’t find a better place for a traditional Paella or some fresh caught local fish. But it also offers far more. The La Cantina kitchen is also home to 3 specialist chefs each taking care over their respective Thai, Indian and TexMex division.

Donnegans Irish Pub It is hard to know what category to list Donnegans, as they do many things, and do them all very well. Day and night it is a bar with a welcome as warm as the draught Guinness and Magners are cold. They show all sports including hurling, and have a great menu of reasonably priced home cooked food from snacks to full meals.

But it is perhaps their entertainment that really sets them apart. With a regular line up of live performers with the common denominator of making sure everyone has a great time.

Getting Around Walking & Cycling.

Aside from the inevitable diversions into its many bars and cafés, the length of the Bay’s main tourist street can be covered on foot in a brisk half hour.

It is possible to walk the coastline, though there are areas of rocks and uneven ground to cover between the coves and beaches. There are several shops renting cycles along the bay.

Water Taxis A very pleasant way to get to San Antonio town is to use one of the water taxis that cross the bay at half hourly intervals day and into the evening, and in high season into the night.

The water taxis have several departure points along the bay—see our map.

Helpful Hints There are two pharmacies in the Bay—shown by the white cross on a green circle on our map. Pharmacies and other non -tourist businesses open mornings 9 to 1 or 2pm, and again in the afternoon 5-8pm.

There are many, many, seemingly a ridiculous amount, of cashpoint machines in the Bay. Note that you will get far better rates and incur lower fees by using the cash machines attached to or operated by actual banks.

Tourism 45% of Ibiza’s Airbnb Properties Are Licensed A report from the collective of Terraferida and DinsAirbnb has identified that Airbnb continues to allow the advertising of properties without the correct tourist licence under the Balearic Tourism Law. The two groups have been able to classify which properties display the licence number in their advertisements and which do not. As a result, they have found that only 44.8% of properties in Ibiza comply with this requisite, and 60% in Formentera. The average in the Balearic Islands stands at 62.2%.

Using data gathered from August 2017 to April 2019, the indication is that this type of offer has reduced by 1,735 beds in Ibiza. Two years ago, according to Terraferida, there were 27,953 beds on their platform and at the last count in April, 26,218 beds.

In Formentera however, there has been an increase in advertisements with 2,065 beds available in 2017 and 2,616 in April 2019 – an increase of 551 beds.

Massive Fraud In carrying out their research, they have also identified ‘massive fraud’, in that the same licence number is being used for multiple properties, whereby each should have their own individual registration or licence number.

One of its conclusions is that properties advertised on Airbnb are still on the rise throughout the whole of the Balearics, however there is a decrease in Ibiza.

They also warn that despite the regulation of tourist properties in this legislature and the possibility of making properties legal, “the real number of illegal properties is huge”. In the Balearic Islands alone, Airbnb has more than 500,000 illegal properties.

Good News According to the Diario de Ibiza, upon learning about the decrease in Airbnb properties registered in Ibiza, the director of Tourism of the Consell Insular de Ibiza, Vicent Torres Ferrer, said: “This is good news, and I think it is the result of the work we have been doing in these two years.”, Referring to information campaigns and inspection work . Torres acknowledged that administrative procedures regarding the application of sanctions “are slow” and perhaps do not communicate “fast enough to the offender for the sanction to be effective, but the sanctions are and will continue to be received,” he said.

On the illegality of the advertisements, the insular director of Tourism ensured that “platform scans” are done on a regular basis and highlighted the agreement with Booking.com so that they do not advertise establishments without a licence number, as opposed to the currently open sanction files against Airbnb and HomeAway.

This comes within weeks of Booking.com coming under fire for attempting to entice owners to rent their properties illegally.

Iberia Express & Ushuaia In Flight “Ibiza Nightclub” Experience (groan) Oh dear. I’m afraid this is a bit embarrassing really.

You see we had a very upbeat, very perky, press release today by airline Iberia Express. But it’s all just a bit, well, crap.

What happened is that on Friday 17th of May, Iberia Express say they “surprised” the passengers on Ibiza flight number I23812, when they “turned the first 2019 flight to the white island into an authentic on board nightclub”.

Quite promising, especially when they go on to tell us it was in collaboration with Hi and Ushuaia, I mean, they know a bit about authentic nightclubbing right?

The effervescent Iberia Express go on to say passengers

received “free fans and sunglasses and”, well, nothing else really.

From the style of the press release I’d have thought they had Carl Cox playing on a gift cart booth, and a fella in the toilet trying to sell you a lollipop while you take a wazz.

I thought for a minute the passengers were guest-listed to the opening parties, and though that would not have added to the flight-club authenticity, it would have at least been something. But instead it was just the chance to win some tickets in a prize draw.

So, basically everyone was given some cheap promotional tat.

Not exactly what I would call an authentic nightclub experience.

Our message to the CEO of Iberia Express is this. If you would like to find out what an authentic Ibiza clubbing experience is, please give us a call, we’ll happily show you what’s what. We suggest you keep your diary free for a following week of recovery.

Mind you, the people look happy enough, and compared to Ryanair’s clubbing experience of being charged one euro to have a bouncer punch you in the mouth on boarding, perhaps it is not so bad.

Victor Spinelli Artist Page is an internationally renowned Multi Media Artist-Photographer, Painter and Sculptor from New York, living in Ibiza.

For the past 20 years he has split his time between New York, the Mediterranean and California and has evolved into a multi-media artist by working on films, commercials, music videos, documentaries and print campaigns.

After working for three summers in Mykonos, Greece photographing the island life, he was drawn to another island in the Mediterranean; Ibiza, the land of Hierbas and dance. His documentation of the Ibizan nightlife has since been published in his first book ‘Manumission Reflections’. In 2002 Pacha’s then Music Director, Danny Whittle, called it “the best photographic work to come out of Ibiza in 10 years”. Spinelli also received a great personal compliment about his first book from Director/ Writer Quentin Tarantino. For two years Spinelli served as the principle photographer for the islands largest magazine, ‘The Best of Ibiza’ and Manumission for 5 summers.

In 2013 a venture capital group has invested in Victor’s work and creative foresight and opened the first instalment of “SPiN Galleries” in Shanghai, China.

Victor is now starting the Spin Art Residency in Ibiza.

At this time of year the Ibizan inbox is full to overflowing of new party promotions- inevitably it is the parties offering something a little bit special that catch our eye, something a bit left-field- Cue Cixada.

We said it was a bit different, but it is the concept itself that caught our attention. This from their own press, “Cixada aims to bring an authentic and affordable sunset experience to San Antonio, combining amazing food and cocktails with tribal drumming, beautiful piano playing, soulful saxophone melodies and a carefully curated DJ set.”

Now we come to think of it, why hasn’t anybody thought of tribal drumming for a sunset party outside of Benirras before? There are bound to be purists who bang on about the Benirras experience being more than just the drums and we wouldn’t disagree. But let’s face it, Benirras has become a bit of a victim of its own popularity. The area is increasingly difficult to access and the human pressure is taking the beach to breaking point. There will be no shortage of tourists who will be quite happy to forgo the carnage of getting to Benirras in favour of a more civilised session sipping cocktails to the same beats on the San An Paseo.

Anyway, I shouldn’t bang on about the drumming too much (sorry about that) as it is only one part of what looks a great sunset concept.

Ibiza Elections 2019 Commentary by Martin Makepeace “San Antonio businessman and town advocate Martin Makepeace has put in huge efforts to encourage voter registration and political participation from Ibiza’s English speaking community.

There are few of us better qualified than he to round up the results and the ramifications of the Sunday elections in Ibiza.

lection night in Ibiza was as dramatic and nail biting as ever. Now that the dust has settled here’s an overview of what happened on the night and what might happen in the coming days and weeks.

Eivissa Consell

It was here that came the big shock of the night with PP taking back control.

The incumbent left wing coalition were left licking their wounds after coming up short mainly due to Podemos losing over 3000 votes compared to 2015.

PP returned 17831 votes whilst PSOE stood still on 12906. Podemos dropped off to 5430 votes whilst Ciudadanos showed their mettle by polling an impressive 3120 votes meaning it’s likely they will have a seat on the government table.

Seats: PP 6 – PSOE 4 – Podemos 2 – Ciudadanos 1 What Next: Ciudadanos have already stated that they won’t go into government with Podemos under any circumstances, so a centre right council is inevitable.

Likely Scenario: Ex- Santa Eulalia mayor Vicent Mari proved too strong for the rest and will start negotiations with C’s to form a centre right coalition island council for next 4 years. Big things will be expected after his success in Santa Eulalia with land reforms, traffic and sustainability high on the agenda.

Sant Antoni de

Likely Scenario: Expect more legislation to keep the town clean and the tourists happy.

Sant Joan De Labritja

polled only 2853 votes and the left wing Podemos came in with 870. Ciudadanos’ (C’s) first time out saw them return 436 votes while PXE (Ibiza Proposal Party) saw their vote more than halved to 458 votes after recent turmoil within the party.

Seats: PP 9 – PSOE 8 – Podemos 2 – PXE 1 – C’s – 1 What Next: With no majority in the 21 seat chamber it’s up to the parties to negotiate with each other to form a coalition.

Likely Scenario: Nothing is guaranteed but a centre right coalition led by PP’s Marcos Serra is the probable outcome. C’s are a natural ally to PP plus PXE ripped up their previous pact with PSOE due to councillor Cristina Ribas switching sides just before the election.

PXE with their 458 votes are the kingmakers here so all eyes will be on their leader Joan Torres over the next few days.

Sant Josep de sa Talaia

The most fragmented Town Hall with 7 different parties winning places on the 21 seat council. PSOE claimed victory here with 2859 votes while the 2nd placed PP polled 2002 votes. Meanwhile Podemos performed well with over a 1000 votes with ARA, PXE and VOX all returning over 400 votes each respectively Seats: PSOE 8 – PP 5 – Podemos 3 – C’s 2 – PXE 1 – VOX 1 – ARA 1 What Next: Incumbent mayor Pep Agustinet is safe as he will team up with Podemos to take control of the council for the next 4 years but he has lots to think about with noise control and beach concessions consistently in the press.

Likely Scenario: The PSOE/Podemos love-in to continue for another 4 years.

(This bit by Nick Gibbs) Rafa Ruiz’ days as mayor look looked numbered at the end of voting, as it initially appeared his PSOE had suffered a major upset at the hands of minority group PxE , and the Ibiza Town municipality turning in perhaps the most surprising results on the day.

As it turned out it was a bit too surprising. Suspicions were raised when it was realised that the PxE group had polled more than 10 times that of the PSOE in some polling stations.

An investigation was called and public lawyers today confirmed that process irregularities had been discovered and that an additional 993 lost votes needed to be awarded back to the PSOE. This took Mayor Ruiz from the position of loser to victor. The nine seats the PSOE hold in Ibiza Town will be sufficient to govern with the cooperation of one of the smaller parties.

The result also lost right wing group VOX their only seat, along with one of ARA, though the biggest loser was the PxE. Their leader Antonio Roldán said he had been left with a ’foolish face’.

Seats: PP 8 – PSOE 9 – Podemos 2 C’s – 2 What Next: Business as normal as the pre-election alliances are reaffirmed.

Summary The east cost resort town showed its true blue colours yet again by voting the PP back with 5835 votes – over 50%.

PSOE were left floundering on 2631 votes while Podemos came in 3rd with 1212 votes.

What Next: New mayor, the experienced Carmen Ferrer has a clear mandate to carry on the good work of Vicent Mari who has made his town the envy of the island balancing residents needs with tourists hard currency.

PSOE will be bitterly disappointed after such a strong showing in the general elections less than a month ago.

PP will be elated that they look likely to control 4 town halls plus the island council.

The big losers are Podemos who lose a foothold in 2 councils and the island council but Ciudadanos will be delighted that even though their numbers weren’t great they now have traction in San Antonio, Ibiza Town and the Island Council.

For all the bluster the VOX bandwagon never took off however they may have a part to play in Ibiza Town.

PXE numbers were poor compared to 4 years ago but as often is the case in proportional representation they will be the power brokers in San Antonio and Ibiza Town.

The Spanish Political & Administrative Structure Spain is a constitutional monarchy, referred to commonly as monarquía parlamentaria, parliamentary monarchy, though the monarch is considered to hold a role of moderator more than any real power of governance.

National Government The Spanish parliament, called the cortes generals consists of two separate legislative bodies, the Congress of Deputies and the Senate.

Also at national level is the Spanish Judiciary which forms part of the legal government of the nation.

Autonomous Communities & Autonomous Cities The next tier of Government is that of Autonomous Communities and Cities, given a right to self government based upon criteria including historical identity, sharing common identities with neighbouring regions, and applicable to Ibiza, as part of a group of islands. Ibiza is part of the Balearic Islands autonomous community.

Provinces In much of Spain the next tier is that of the province. The Balearics are not subdivided by provinces and so we have not included the provincial tier on our main tree. We have shown an example in a spur to the right where the Autonomous community of Catalonia, equal in status to the Balearic Islands, is comprised of 4 provinces, Barcelona, Gerona Lerida and Tarragona.

While municipal governments receive funds from the central government and the regions, they can also levy their own taxes.

Along with the Canary Islands, the Balearics have an additional level of Government, the ‘Consell Insular’, literally Island Council, not present on the mainland.

Report Pharmacies The plea of “where can I find an open pharmacy?” is a common occurrence in Ibiza’s social media groups, and sometimes it comes with an added degree of urgency.

Here we take you through the simplest of step by steps to show you how to find which chemists are open out of hours in your area.

All Pharmacies operate under the Collegi Oficial de Farmacéutics de les Illes Balears (COFIB)

Step by Step  Go to the website http://www.cofib.es/es/  From the main menu go to ‘farmacias’ and select ‘farmacias abiertas’ from the drop down menu.  You then select , Island Local Municipality Date and Time  You can alternatively choose to search by address, but in our use the easier and quicker option was by municipality.

Translation The website is available in Spanish and Catalan. If you need/prefer to use it in English, Google translate makes a good effort—not perfect but better than many. (on desktop computers most people can access translate by a right click anywhere on the page in Google Chrome and select ‘translate page to English’).

If your Chrome is not set up to auto-translate, copy the page address http://www.cofib.es/es/, go to google translate at https://translate.google.co.uk , and paste into the translate box for a full page translation.

Open Chemists Open chemists are then shown on the Google Map to the left, which you can use to zoom in and out, and move around to find your closest chemists.

The site warns you not to rely on the information 100%, especially on festival days. It is a good idea to note down one or two back up alternatives just in case.

Two venues in San Antonio are currently supporting the local rock music scene by putting on live bands most weekends.

Can Rock

Can Rock in Cala de Bou puts on regular live music from local bands and is open throughout the year.

There’s usually a band playing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights - like their Facebook page for full details. Scheduled gigs:

Can Rock is at Carrer des Caló, 2. Bar opens at 8pm, bands usually play around 10pm. Many gigs are free and food and drinks prices are reasonable.

The Dorado live acoustic shows return to the beautiful venue that is Santos in Playa d’en Bossa again this summer, for another run of great outdoor shows. Each night includes a local band as well this year, which is great for supporting the local live music scene. Full lineup:

Ronnie Scott´s Jazz Club Presents San Antonio, Pikes Friday 31st May

London Jazz Club Ronnie Scott´s Jazz are hosting five supper clubs this summer at Pikes Ibiza. To celebrate their 60th anniversary.

Ronnie Scott’s opened in London 60 years ago and has hosted some of the world’s greatest performers including Chaka Khan, Prince, Van Morrison and George Benson.

The Plaza Mayor at Pikes will be converted into an outdoor Jazz club where you will enjoy a tantalising menu, specially created by Pikes chef Lee Milne while enjoying Live Jazz ´al fresco`with Rachael Cohen Quartet. Rachael is regarded as one of the top players in London´s jazz scene and is a mainstay at Ronnie Scott´s.

Cocoon’s 20th anniversary brings Underworld and Kraftwerk to Ibiza

Sven Väth’s legendary night Cocoon celebrates it’s 20th Ibiza season this year and is bringing a number of special events and guests to the island as part of the celebration, in addition to its regular Monday nights at Amnesia. Underworld were at Cocoon’s first night which took place on the 25th May—see review right.

Ragnaröck is in the West End of San Antonio and often puts on live rock bands at weekends. They tend not to announce an advanced schedule for their gigs, so like and check their Facebook page to keep up-to-date. So far, they have already had Ronnie James Dio, Embellish (from Barcelona) and Niu de Born (Ibiza). It was the first time that Embellish have played in Ibiza.

Rain Threatened Play

Playing a range of songs from their 40-year back catalogue they performed for one and a half hours, ending with Born Slippy, their biggest hit. Sven joined them onstage, Karl asked if we wanted to dance with them and on cue the crowd went crazy, and so did Sven who remained with them on the stage throughout. The ticker tape was launched and descended like snow onto the crowd and the show ended with the three of them taking bows on the stage, revelling in the appreciation from the pumped up crowd. There was no encore, but we were very happy with what we’d had. It was a magical one and a half hours that flew by but left you feeling ecstatic and pleased that you had been able to experience it.

Cocoon Ibiza celebrates its 20th season this year and Sven Väth’s legendary night is bringing a number of special events and guests to the island as part of the celebration.

The first Cocoon20 event included a live performance from Underworld at Ushuaïa on Saturday May 25, along with DJ sets from Dana Ruh B2B with André Galluzzi, Matthias Tanzmann, Ilario Alicante and Sven Väth himself.

In uncharacteristic Ibizan weather for May, the day began with rain and threatened to dampen everyone’s spirits, despite Underworld’s assurances on Instagram that the show would go on. Fortunately, as the afternoon progressed, the rain stopped and the sun came out to shine on the ever-growing crowd in the venue and opening DJs. Sven Väth came onstage and took control of his turntables at 19.15, playing one of his trademark vinyl-only techno sets for 2 hours. He clearly enjoyed himself and so did the sea of people in front of him.

Underworld Arrives

For many people, including me, the highlight was going to be seeing Underworld play live. They came onstage at 21.30 as it was starting to get dark, and as they launched into Cowgirl/Rez, it was obvious that we were going to experience something special. Those memorable notes rang out from the speakers and large white letters spelled out the name of the song on the LED screen behind them. Large video screens at the side of the stage gave us close ups of Karl as he danced around the stage and of Rick as he worked his magic from behind his bank of equipment. There may have been only two of them on that stage but the energy that emanated from the music combined with Karl’s constant rave dancing, the visuals and light show made for a magical experience. The lighting picked up pace as the show went on, and there were soon lasers shooting across the venue and stars bursting from the top of the stage, every song having a unique visual pro-

“Drift” Series

Underworld are currently half-way through their “Drift” series, a year-long project that sees the band release new work (music and film) on consecutive Thursdays. They’re also about to embark on a series of live shows at Sydney Opera House and European festivals, before playing a handful of arena dates later in the year. They are clearly creatively on fire at the moment, and to be able to see them in the comparatively small space of Ushuaïa with an excellent production and performance was something special.

Another special Cocoon20 event will be held at Ushuaïa on September 13, when Sven Väth will be bringing German electro pioneers Kraftwerk and their 3D multimedia performance for their first ever visit to Ibiza. Sven Väth will be doing a full DJ set and other acts will be confirmed nearer the time.

Ibiza Town Welcome to Ibiza Town & Friends Ibiza Town, Marina Botafoch, Talamanca, Playa d’en Bossa & Figueretes.

All are very different in character and content. Ibiza Town, the island capital, has its own special bohemian chic with a touch of freak. The D’alt Vila is home to some of Ibiza’s greatest cultural and historic gems. Marina Botafoch oozes new money, and even if you haven’t got it, some enjoy just being around it. Figueretes is a ’real’ neighbourhood mixed with Tourism, and in our opinion it mixes well. And Playa d’en Bossa is Ibiza’s resort to have undergone most development and change in recent years, and home to the new names at the top of the Superclub league.

However there is some good sense to us grouping such odd bedfellows. They all connect in an unbroken urban area and so movement between the areas is easy and regular. Aside from the mid August meltdown, a walk from one end to the other is not great exertion. We love the Ibiza Town strip for exactly this reason. It gives you the choice of so many different facets of Ibiza, at most a few euros in a taxi away.

Shebizan  Amanda O’Riordan ROLL THE DRUMS: “IT’s ACTUAL summer!”

As you read this, I’m off to deceptivelynamed “London” Luton airport for our first major holiday of summer ’19, in the south west of Mallorca. Some may eye-roll at this, considering that my last few weekends have been spent in Ibiza, but this is half term “deep relaxion” time.

Our beloved daughter has just survived a week of exams and even she can’t wait to get poolside with mum and dad. She’s just emptied our local Camden branch of Urban Outfitters of colourful swimwear and shorts to mark the occasion.

I’m dieting to get into my bikini (as usual), but what happens when your bikini lets you down during that all-important first pool moment of the summer season? You know, the one you’ve been planning for 9 cold northern European months?

This poor woman spent £60 on a PrettyLittleThing bikini, which turns the pool water BLUE. The brand reveals that it’s for ‘poolside posing’ only, proving we should all read the small print. People have reacted with hysterics to the swimwear, which they joked was just for Instagram and not for practical use. After all, why would anyone assume you couldn’t swim in a bikini?

Onto this week’s instalment. Read on, as we experiment with the sperm facial, investigate the Towelkini, plus the Chelsea Flower Show creates floral glory on the high street.

We all desire a youthful face. Whilst some of us might have one now, none of us will enjoy that luxury forever.

Amongst the billions of pounds worth of skincare options out there, it’s emerged that lathering your face in semen might be a good idea.

That is the claim of Chelsee Lewis, a celebrity facialist, anyway. She has worked with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney. Although it has not been revealed whether they had this specific treatment, Lewis comments that her clients are not shy to have sperm rubbed on their faces.

Semen is loaded with a compound known as spermine. It is an antioxidant that helps reduce wrinkles, smoothen the skin, lessen acne and spots, and give a generally healthier skin appearance.

You are probably thinking that sperm is usually only associated with sex and making babies, but a study from the Dermatological Association in the UK suggests that semen can have many other benefits/uses, including health, cooking and beauty. So, don’t be so quick to dismiss these little tadpoles.

The semen facial is a 30-minute do-it-at-home routine.  Rub the fresh semen onto your face.  Leave it for around 20 minutes so that it’s completely absorbed by the skin.  Wash it off by dabbing your face with cold water.

Wipe your skin with fragrant wet tissues.

Mmmm. Salty.

In case you are uncomfortable with dabbing your face with semen, there are other ways to achieve healthy looking skin. The following method uses 30 minutes of your morning

Sperm Facial ... time and could work wonders.

Put a teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth in the morning. You should do this before brushing while your stomach is empty. Then swish the coconut oil around for the next 15-20 minutes.

This will tire out the lower face because it is exercising the muscle group in that area. Sticking to doing this on a regular basis is going to tighten your facial muscles.

This procedure also gives you pearly-white teeth, strengthens them, clears out the impurities in the skin and treats rashes and acne. Not to forget that coconut oil is also a potent antioxidant and antibacterial elixir.

In case, the above process also seems too difficult and time-consuming, there is yet another option.

Take out ice from your freezer and place in any clean vessel. Then add cold water to the ice and use this super cold water to splash on your face 15-20 times.

Done. I’d opt for the bag of ice, as opposed to a face full of sperm.

A New York fashion designer has created a bizarre towel beach outfit called a Towelkini – but would you wear it?

If you can't be bothered to pack a beach towel and a bikini on your summer hols, you’ll no longer have to over-pack. Yes, the Towelkini, a two-in-one, combines a towel and swimwear.

It might sound like a good idea at first glance, but it's not the most practical beachwear. Resembling two towels stuck together, with holes for your head, arms, legs and bum (yep, you don't have to remove it even to visit the loo), it's a bit odd.

I’m all for saving space in the suitcase, but the downside is that it pretty much eradicates tanning unless you want seriously dodgy tan lines, Plus, it's not ideal for sweltering summer temperatures. Let alone that it might even cause adult nappy rash.

I just about know my Spandex from my Polyester.

If you want to grab people's attention without having quite so much on show, you might prefer to invest in these shorts, emblazoned with your loved one’s face.

I reckon it would be better suited for post-swim moments - especially on the beach to avoid stuck-on sand, or perhaps worn lounging by the pool in the shade. In fact, it would probably work well after a bath at home.

How To Wear Tit Tape ...

These celebs turned heads in daring low-cut frocks at the recent TV Baftas. Leaving me wondering how they avoided that most dreaded of wardrobe mishaps.

This has pushed her boobs together to create a nice firm cleavage. Surprisingly it’s really comfortable and feels like everything is where it should be.

Step 1: Begin by applying under the armpit and stretching up to the shoulder to create a lift.

Step 4: Finish off with a strap across the body underneath the breasts for extra support, and place over ­

nipple covers.

This one really defines the shape of one’s boobs and makes sure they’re going to stay in place and look their best. Bit have far more support than in a regular strapless bra.

Step 1: Start with the tape under the breast, push the breast up and apply tape, reaching to the shoulder.

Step 2: Repeat on the other side – leaving a gap for cleavage.

Boobs have been lifted so well here, there’s no chance of them moving.

This is great for plunge dresses that are usually difficult to find undies for.
