Ibiza Death: Lawyer for Men Who Claim They Were Beaten By Ibiza Police Is Horrified By Death Of Alan Drennan Jilly Beattie, Charlie Yates

The lawyer representing three men allegedly battered by police on Ibiza – including a dad who claims officers choked his son to death – has expressed horror at the death Alan Drennan on the holiday isle. Campaigning solicitor Nick Turner says he has been appalled to hear of Alan's death after he had accused police of beating him within minutes of landing on the Spanish sunshine island. Earlier this year Mr Turner and his clients called for a British tourist boycott of Ibiza warning that UK and Irish holiday makers could die at the hands of allegedly savage Ibizan police. Mr Turner, of Russell and Co, Malvern, Worcs, represents Norman Rhoden who believes his son Luke, 25, was choked to death by Guardia Civil. He is also working with DJ Oliver Sebastien, 27, and Samuel Kennish, 25, who claim they were both brutally beaten by cops on Ibiza last summer according to their lawyer. Mr Turner said: “It is absolutely staggering that another death has come about after the furore that followed the death of Luke Rhoden. “They seem to be oblivious to the international uproar being caused by the deaths of tourists on what used to be a safe holiday island. “The common denominator in the alleged attacks and two of the deaths are the police on Ibiza – the Guardia Civil has a lot of questions to answer. “As a parent my heart goes out to the family of Mr Drennan. I know through speaking with Luke’s father Norman of the absolutely enormous feeling of loss. “Add to that the total feeling of powerlessness as the very people allegedly behind the death are the ones we normally trust with looking after law-abiding citizens. It is truly appalling. “I would strongly urge parents to carefully consider where their children go on holiday until justice is done and those responsible for the alleged beatings and deaths are brought to justice.” Police on Ibiza initially claimed Alan, from Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, died from natural causes after arriving on Ibiza last Saturday. Since then Belfast Live has repeatedly tried to contact the police on the island and the mainland to demand an explanation about injuries allegedly sustained by the 21-year-old while in the custody of the Guardia Civil at the airport. Requests for a statement have been made in both Spanish and English to senior officers but no response has been forthcoming since Sunday. The Institute of Legal Medicine of Ibiza is responsible for carrying out a post mortem on Alan and toxicology results will take up to a month to be returned. Until then it will remain unclear how Alan died, but his pals fear he may have succumbed to the fatal effects of concussion as he slept in his San Antonio hotel room. They say Alan told them he was beaten by the police and had suffered a gash to his head and arm and bruising to his back. Yesterday a local paper on the holiday island, the Peridico De Ibiza, claimed Alan had died from a “massive drug overdose”. A family friend said: “We knew to expect this sort of misinformation and here it is. After what we know happened to Alan, after what he said was done to him by the police, we fear there’s a cover up happening around his death. “And now with this report it appears the Spanish media, the police and the authorities in Ibiza appear to be circling their wagons to protect their tourism industry. “Nothing is going to bring Alan back and we'll wait for the medical reports to come back. At this stage how he died is not the issue, it’s the fact that he died in the first place that we’re trying to deal with. That’s as much as we can cope with right now.” Alan’s father has hired Madden and Finucane solicitors to handle the case in Ibiza and the PSNI have moved in to carry out their own investigation. Their assistance was not requested by Spanish police, but it is underway headed by murder squad chief Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes. PSNI officers called with the Drennan family earlier today and now plan to take witness statements from the 10 friends Alan had travelled with. A police source said: “We have every right to look at this case even though Alan died in a foreign jurisdiction - and that’s exactly what we’re doing. “Alan was from Northern Ireland, he was one of us and there are questions around the circumstances of his death. “We have a duty to Alan, just like we have a duty to every other person in Northern Ireland and while we politely say we are offering assistance, you can take it that we are actively investigating this matter.” Alan’s friends fear an alleged beating by police in Ibiza airport may have led to concussion and a fatal brain bleed as he slept. The mechanic was escorted away from the Saturday night flight by Spanish police after a complaint was made against him following loud behaviour on

board. Hours later he was found dead in his hotel room by a cleaner. Belfast friend David Patterson said: "Friends of Alan who stayed on Ibiza set up a memorial in Mambos while the sun went down played his favourite trance song ... Satellite, You're Half A World Away." Alan's death brings the death toll of British men in Ibiza this summer to five, and the death of another young man and alleged attacks last year on the island are also under scrutiny. Grieving father Norman Rhoden, from Wigan, Lancashire, has met two young men who claim they were tortured by police officers on Ibiza in a bid to highlight the alleged level of police brutality on the Spanish holiday isle. The families and their lawyer urged British holidaymakers to avoid Ibiza amid fears of a rogue police unit dealing out rough justice to vulnerable and drunken male visitors. Norman, 45, is campaigning for justice for his own son, former Wigan Warriors academy player Luke, 25. He died on holiday last August after allegedly being choked by officers who were reportedly recorded live on camera doing it and they were allegedly told by a doctor to stop. Norman said: "The police told me that they never choked Luke, but we have a doctor who witnessed it and video footage of an officer with a baton round his neck." Norman has also met Kent-based DJ Oliver Sebastien, 27, who says he was battered and tortured by Guardia Civil officers last June after having his drink spiked. And now their lawyer has been approached by a third alleged victim Samuel Kennish, 25, who says he was beaten by police in the same resort. All three are represented by campaigning British lawyer Mr Turner, who said: “We want to get the names of all the Guardia Civil members involved in all these incidents." He claimed: “We are looking here at potentially some rogue cops within the Spanish Guardia Civil, operating in Ibiza, so it is entirely possible the same officers battered and beat Oliver whilst he was in custody, were the same officers who choked to death Luke Rhoden and tortured Samuel when he needed help." Mr Turner added: “Alternatively and much more terrifyingly, there is a policy decision from the top to target and make an example of young, British male tourists who are engaging in hi-jinx, having fuelled themselves with alcohol and possibly other substances. “Is it right that young men, letting off steam on a holiday island full of nightclubs and bars, deserve to be battered to death as punishment for intoxication? “Surely these young men in this vulnerable state need extra care and protection from themselves. "They’re in no position to stand up to violent thuggery from the very people who are supposedly there to protect law and order. “We are currently looking into claims under article two of the Human Rights Act, ie, the right to life, and article three, the right not to be tortured in custody in the case of both Samuel and Oliver.” DJ Oliver Sebastien plans to take legal action against Ibiza cops for allegedly torturing and beating him Club DJ Oliver said: "Norman and I want justice, to raise awareness of what's happening and to flush out these people who should not be in a position of power over there. “I would urge holiday makers to go elsewhere and the very thought of going back frightens me. I don’t ever intend to go back there.’ Samuel Kennish, 25, suffered horrific injuries and memory problems after the alleged Guardia Civil beating the morning after a night out last August at the Amnesia Club in San Antonio, Ibiza. Still scarred, Samuel, who is now employed as a youth worker in Queensland, Australia, said: “Ibiza is an amazing place but British tourists need to be really, really careful. He claimed: “It was absolutely brutal what happened to me and it started at the side of the road in broad daylight but nobody intervened and I was beaten unconscious. “I was in intensive care for a week, I still have physical scars and I get flashbacks. I had two pairs of handcuffs placed on me and my hands are still numb and I have pain in my wrists and huge scars. “The scars on my shoulders from those injuries will be with me for life. Police in Ibiza have consistently denied any wrong doing.

Several companies of PIMEEF’s ‘Association of Tourist Accommodation’ (AVAT) are getting calls from outraged tourists that now need alternative accommodation for their stay in Ibiza said AVAT president, Roberto San Esteban. "It is virtually impossible to provide them with a home for the last week of July and first of August as the island is almost fully booked," said San Esteban. “Some of the homeowners that co-operate with us say they've only received 30 per cent of their full payment or a week instead of two and they're not prepared to let holidaymakfind it curious that the ers in unless they receive firm has gone into what they're voluntary liquidation at owed. They worked on mid to high end business ranging from £8,000 to £18,0000 a week. Esteban confirmed this stating “They were strongest in Ibiza where they had around 50 properties but also operated in other areas like Majorca. “I don't know why they've gone into liquidation but our understanding is they were under investigation by Spanish tax authorities and had been fined for non-payment of taxes. It's something I've heard but haven't had confirmed.” “Speaking personally and not as president of AVAT, I have to say I find it curious that the firm has gone into voluntary liquidation at one of the busiest holiday times of the year when customers have paid a fortune and many homeowners are yet to receive their full money.' Gagen Sharma, lead partner at Sharma & Co, said she was working on a rescue package for International Villas and confirmed the firm had ceased trading but had not yet gone into voluntary liquidation. International Villas is based in the Essex market town of Saffron Walden. Speaking to the press Sharma said “Affected clients were informed in advance. They were informed by email last Thursday. Around 50 rentals, all in Ibiza, are affected and although I haven't got a country breakdown I believe all are British. I've personally taken calls from some of the people who have been affected. My first advice to people has obviously been to contact their insurers if they have travel insurance. I can't at this stage offer any guarantees to those that didn't take out insurance because we're still attempting a rescue” She said she could not comment fully at this stage on the reasons for the problems experienced by the company “because it's something that's still being investigated”. Meanwhile in Ibiza the AVAT President confirmed some suggestion of wrongdoing, though in a context applicable to many firms working in the sector which has a reputation for ‘black money’ (undeclared earnings). “The company is one of many of being investigated by the tax authorities for possible violations of not paying tax on the income from rents", according to AVAT. A message has now been posted on the International Villa website stating “International Villas has ceased trading and is working on a rescue package. A further update will be provided before close of business on Thursday 30th July”. The Sant Josep Local Police arrested an illegal taxi driver at the airport last Sunday night, only to discover that the driver was hiding drugs in his socks. The Police Officers involved in the arrest were placed at the airport to try to curb the illegal transport of passengers where they caught a driver in the act, and approached him as passengers were about to enter the car. On speaking to the Serbian driver they found that he was very nervous, and so they searched his vehicle. BBQ on the Beach In a world first for newspaper publishing we bring you a food review with scratch and sniff aromas! Scratch the plate right to savour the unmistakable Smokey delights of a million family Sundays.

OK, we admit that was a bit of a ruse, scratch the newspaper and you’ll get at best a faint whiff of printer’s inks, but it was at least a ruse with some purpose. We will readily concede that grilled meat is not the most photogenic of plates to feature in a food review, but then aesthetics is not what a barbeque is all about. What it lacks in visual beauty it more than makes up for in smell and taste—and so that’s where you’ll need a little imagination to appreciate the quality before you. Having had the real deal of this new meal deal available at Jose’s Bull Bar on Port des Torrent beach—literally on the beach—you can choose tables on the sand if you wish, we can vouch for it being cooked to perfection by their grillmaster Cesar who has done his Argentinian heritage no disservice in their reputation as the Kings of all things grilled. The coals are ready at 6pm every night and there is a wide range of plates available from Chorizos Criollo (spicy Spanish sausage) at just 5.50€, all the way up to the Fillet Steak at a still reasonable 20€, especially so given it is served with natural chips and grilled vegetables. Our interest had been sparked by the meal deal however—tonight was a night to go Neanderthal in all its carnivorous glory. The mixed platter includes juicy skirt steaks, local pork chops (big ones at that), Beef Ribs, what the menu describes as Chicken Breasts but is more of a, well, Chicken, and of course some Chorizo—you can’t have a platter without Chorizo. All of the meat is fresh cooked to order and a minute or two after placing your order you hear that reassuring sizzle as your cuts hit the grill, from when the added treat of aromatherapy begins. Together with the meat you get a mound of chips—actually far more than it appears in the photo—those chips are many, many, layers deep—but I’ll come back to the chips, and a litre

of good fresh made fruity Sangria, or a bottle of wine if preferred. We had the platter between two adults and a very hungry child who had honed their appetite through several hours swimming and dad’s sandcastle demolishing, and there was simply too much. Not so much too much that it was a waste, but enough that you found yourself wishing for magic transportation directly to your sofa. All that for 30€ - which we walked away from content that we had just had one of those rarest of things, an Ibiza bargain. Better yet for families Jose offers a ‘Family Fiesta’ where for an additional 10€ you get more of the same platter and a litre jug or squash for 2 children (fine to add extra children at 5€ each). As any family knows that 10€ can go in no time just on soft drinks, so it’s like they are eating for free—plus you get to go on about how squash was good enough when you were small etc etc, annoying for them perhaps but somehow rewarding for us. OK so all that is brilliant as it stands and you should go buy some but, and this is a very big but. If you like big buts you should strap yourself in as this one is bigger that that of trailer trash on Jer-

ry Springer. Jose has a secret weapon. You may well be thinking he is Spanish, and half of him is. But talk to him and you will immediately know that he is to all intent and purpose English, and specifically Scouse. If Argentinians care about their grilled meats, and they do, the same can be said of Scouse and their chips. Jose has done the impossible and is making chips that are, get ready it’s coming, as good as/exactly the same as British chip shop chips. There are plenty of places in Ibiza where you can buy very acceptable gastro-chips (that’s poncey to you and me) but to perfect the sacred art of the proper chip shop chip, that takes some doing. And he has done it. He tells me it took some time, and was telling me about a three stage process, but I was already miles away dreaming of the day he perfects batter. See advert on page 3 for full contact details etc, but you can’t miss it, go to Port Des Torrent beach and follow that delicious barbeque aroma. https://www.facebook.com/Bullbarbeach

David’s Pizzeria

Stan Farrow

With its stylish French-Italian cuisine David’s Restaurant/Pizzeria located in the heart of San Antonio is always a popular choice for those in the know. David’s has been consistently ticking all the boxes for the last two decades—great food, excellent service, a lively atmosphere and prices that never dent the wallet too badly. When talking of prices and David’s you just can’t help but mention their superb value daily menu which has been a workers favourite for many years—and no one knows how to hunt out a bargain better than the workers. Available daily till 8.30pm the menu starts with a choice of garlic bread, mixed or tomato salad, then for the main two options of spaghetti or a mozzarella and tomato pizza to which you add 2 of your own favourite additional toppings. The desert is one of a selection of caramel cream, ice cream or fruit of the day - and the price even includes a beer, soft drink or wine and a chupito to end the meal with aplomb. The menu is extensive and their pizzas can be cooked on thin crust or as a Calzone. However there is far more on offer than you would normally find at a regular pizza joint with our faves including the hot Goat’s Cheese salad, a simply sublime combination of lettuce, tomato, ba-

con, mushrooms and hot goat’s cheese, though I’m always tempted by the Salmon with dill oil and toast from the starters and the Magret of Duck with mashed apples and honey – well it just speaks for itself. Other top choices include sirloin steak “perigourdine” style with mushroom sauce truffle and foie-gras (don’t be put off by the fancy ingredients—you can’t grumble at 20.50€ for such a splendid steak). This, as with the entire menu, is prepared by the creative kitchen using the finest and freshest ingredients in Ibiza. The restaurant itself consists of two parts – the comfortable lounge, colourful and fresh, or the bustling terrace which is closed off and heated during cooler months, and during the heat of the summer refreshed by a vapour spray system making it the perfect place for a bit of al fresco dining. These are just some of the reasons that David’s has remained one of the most popular restaurants on the island for couples, families and larger groups – but don’t just take our word for it, head down there to try their delicious food for yourself and we promise you won’t be disappointed.

Top Tip: When ordering a pizza, ask them to put an egg on it for a taste sensation. You can find David’s at Calle Madrid 12 in San Antonio. Tel 971 340470,

Young Formentera Footballer Remembered

The citizens of Formentera are in shock at the death of 27-year-old local resident Antonio Palomo, who recently died in a tragic traffic accident. The young man was killed Sunday night on Calle Isidor Bardetes Macabich in the town of Sant Francesc after losing control of a motorcycle and crashing into a driveway. Antonio Palomo was well known in Formentera, and was particularly good at football playing in Formentera B. He has received many messages of condolence on social networks which emphasize his "cheerful and optimistic" nature.

Ibiza Town. On exiting the vehicle, the mother found that the doors had locked automatically as the baby remained fastened in a seat during the full heat of the midday sun. Several people who were in the area heard the cries for help and while initial attempts at breaking a window with various tools failed. A worker from a nearby construction site slightly wounded himself in the hand as he managed to break a window using a pick axe, and the baby was saved. The likelihood is that if the baby was a Gucci bag and the car was in Salinas, the window would have been broken much quicker.

ly potent smell. In addition, the Talamanca plant is suffering monitoring issues and the Formentera treatment plant is having problems with the cement pipes. The wastewater treatment plant performing best is in San Antonio because it was remodelled "recently", according to Abaqua. Abaqua have assured that they are "actively working" with support from the Consell Insular to find a solution and to manage sludge. It is considering, among other options, the possibility of temporarily depositing sludge in the dump of Ca Na Putxa. Until June, stagnant sludge was processed and used as organic fertilizer.

Crime Stats Encouraging

The Ministry of the Interior has released crime figures which show a significant drop in crime throughout the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. Specifically on in Ibiza, during the period of January 1st to June 30th 2015, the drop in the number of criminal offences was 7% compared to the same period last year. Also, robbery with violence and intimidation is down 37%, and normal robberies down almost 25%. Thefts were down 7.2% on the island while there was a small rise in the theft of vehicles of 10.8%. Formentera also saw a decline of criminal offences by 12.5%.

Illegal dumping of Asbestos

Illegal Waste Dumping

Sant Josep Town Council has recalled more than 720 kilos of waste which has been illegally deposited in 16 different municipalities. It has been found that some of the waste contains asbestos which is extremely hazardous and potentially life threatening. "The cost of this management is met by all the inhabitants of the municipality rather than the specific owner who is dumping the waste,” reports a Council spokesman. The abandonment or dumping of any hazardous waste is "completely prohibited" and is considered a very serious offence punishable with fines up to 30,000 euros.

The Guardia Civil in cooperation with Palma Airport Customs has arrested two passengers of Moroccan nationality, suspected of crimes against public health. On the 23rd of this month, on a flight from Malaga to Ibiza via Majorca, the passengers were stopped at the airport in Palma after acting suspiciously. A radiological examination performed on the travellers showed foreign objects inside the bodies of both. They were taken to the Espases hospital wherein 101 capsules with 1064 grams of hashish were removed from one passenger, and 78 capsules with 840 grams were removed from the other.

Python found in sink

There’s a Snake in mi Kitchen

A man in Cala de Bou discovered a royal python in his kitchen sink after fetching a drink in the middle of the night. The 1.2 metre snake has been removed by the authorities, but so far the owner has not been located. “We were not scared really because we love animals and would like to adopt the python, but in this case we can’t because we already have enough pets.” The man believes the python may have been living at the house for several days as their animals had been behaving nervously. The animal will now remain in a clinic for a period of fifteen to twenty days where ownership of the pet can be claimed. After this period environment officials will be forced to find a new home for the python.

Illegal Taxis on the Up

The president of the Federation Insular Taxi, Alejandro Cardell says that the amount of pirate taxis in Ibiza is increasing. “We're sick of this and require the authorities to act. Pirate taxis have now become institutionalized.” Cardell, however, is not in favour of taking the exceptional measure of a strike, but added: "It is clear that next season if there is no sign that things will change, something must happen." The president of the Association of Taxi de San Jose, Joan Torres, expressed the same concerns as Cardell. "We have met with the Councilor for Planning and Mobility and we have also had a conversation with the San Jose Town Council and we have agreed to give them time, as they are new to the job"

Donuts Doing Donuts

The driver of an SUV knocked over a light and almost hit a mother and her four year old son after making several spins, early in the afternoon on Saturday, in Port des Torrent. According to the witness, she and her son were leaving the Bay Beach Hotel when they saw three young men in a metallic grey Mitsubishi Pajero SUV metallic grey travelling recklessly at full speed. The vehicle performed ‘donuts’ (circular skidding) at the intersection until they hit and completely destroyed the light, then fled towards the roundabout at Es Cucó.

Irresponsible Dog Owners

Local Police received a tip on Sunday at approximately 3pm that a dog had spent more than two hours locked in a black car in the full glare of the sun, at the end of Calle Ramón Muntaner. A couple of policemen tried to track down the owners but, as it was not possible, tried to force the door and finally decided to break the glass. They gave water to the animal, which was dehydrated, and then transferred him to a nearby veterinary clinic before sending him to the Animal Recovery Centre of Sa Coma. The head of the veterinary clinic recalled that three weeks ago a dog died after being left in a car in the parking lot of the supermarket Mercadona at Can Burgos, while the owners were shopping inside.

Cap Martinet hotel robbed

Pro Thieves at Large

Four people with hoods forced a window of the office of a hotel in Cap Martinet this Saturday at about half past six in the morning and opened a safe with a thermal lance. The thieves were caught by facility staff, but managed to flee with 22,060.66 euros. The modus operandi suggests that it is the work of a band of professional thieves who may be responsible for similar thefts this year and last year. The thieves stealthily entered the complex at a time when most customers are sleeping, but the smell of the thermal lance alerted a kitchen worker who in turn alerted security personnel. The thieves managed to escape, but employees got the license plate number, which may help the investigation.

Native Ibiza Torre d’es Pi d’es Catalá Nicole Torres If you are visiting Formentera, you can’t miss this excellent cultural opportunity. Starting on Thursday 30th July, the Tower of Es Pi d’es Català—the tower of the Calatan’s Pinetree—will be open every Thursday evening from 5 to 7pm. During the past month of May, the end of the restoration was certified, having had a cost of 170.603 euros. This tower, built during the second half of the 18th century, has been restored respecting the original building methods, is the first on the island which visitors will be able to enter. The tower of Es Pi d’es Catala is an element declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of monument included in the catalogue of cultural heritage protection of Formentera grade A. A little bit of history… The tower of Es Pi d’es Catala is one of the four towers that exist on the island of Formentera, built between 1762 and 1763 in locations determined by the then commander in chief of the Balearic Islands, Francisco de Paula Bucarelli y Ursúa, designed by the military engineer Jose Garcia Martinez. All these buildings were used mainly for defensive purposes and surveillance until 1867.

New exhibition at Puig des Molins

Museum de Puig des Molins

The museum of Puig des Molins in Ibiza Town has just opened a new exhibit showing two reconstructions of the estimated 3,300 underground burials on the site. Only 20% of the burials have currently been excavated and results show that this site has for centuries been used solely for the purpose of burying the dead. With the new exhibits, those responsible for the museum intended to show that the site was not for a single use, but has been an evolution over time. The graves range from a Punic sarcophagus from the late 5th century BC to a 1st century AD Roman tomb.

Cala Llentrisca Carly Sorensen Ibiza is full of gorgeous hidden gems, and one of my favourites is Cala Llentrisca, near Es Cubells, in San Josep. There are various routes down, all of which require parking your car and walking, which is why I think this beautiful beach has remained so pristine, isolated and relaxing. It's a small-ish stone cove dotted with old fishermen's huts and featuring a gorgeous rickety old jetty in the middle, which my little one will happily throw rocks off all day! At one end you can always find shelter in a spacious alcove hewn into the rock, perfect for a picnic (just please take your rubbish

away after!). The water is crystal clear, progressing to turquoise, emerald then deep azure and always seems to be teeming with tiny fish, even at ankle depth. We've visited at all months of the year and it's never busy. It's become one of our go-to places for peace and solitude. I am not going to give explicit directions to this paradise, other than that it's near Es Cubells, as the walk through the pines and along narrow foot paths to find it (whichever route you happen upon) is as stunning as the cove itself. Grab a map, a picnic and plenty of water and head out on an adventure! You won't regret it, I promise. Oh, and don't all go at once!

Libertines Ibiza Rocks Claire B

Ibiza Rocks pushed the boat out for its 10th birthday party with The Libertines headlining and support from nouveau-punk duo Slaves - a line-up that promised to be a special night. And it was! Dizzy Rascal's performance two weeks ago at Ibiza Rocks was bonkers, but last week’s gig was mental! Slaves took to the stage just before 9.15 and immediately showed they meant business. Consisting of just Isaac Holman on drums and lead vocals and Laurie Vincent on guitar and vocals, between the two of them they make a lot of noise, as they energetically belted out song after song from their debut album, which was released last month. A mosh pit quickly formed in front of the stage and it was clear that they

had a lot of fans in the house. Chants of ‘Feed the mantaray’ rang out in advance of them playing that song as someone in a mantaray costume bounced onto the stage, jumped around for bit and then dived into the crowd. As if the music wasn’t good enough we were treated to a crowd surfing mantaray! It’s not everyday you experience that. Shortly after that, their set came to an all to early end, but what a brilliant, fast-paced and fun performance it was. DJ Colin Peters was left to keep the crowd entertained when they left the stage which he did brilliantly by playing a favourite of mine, ‘Ever fallen in love’ by Buzzcocks, which had nearly everyone around me in front of the stage dancing and singing along. The party had well and truly started. After half an hour of lots more great tunes, it was time for The Libertines to take to the stage and do their thing for the excited crowd that were crammed into the space in front of the stage. The band walk walked onto the stage and Pete Doherty immediately threw out several cans of beer to people in the crowd. The drama started very early. They hadn’t even finished the first song before Pete Doherty launched into the most ambitious stage dive that I have witnessed, leaping feet first, guitar in hand off the stage, over the heads of the photographers and security staff in the pit, straight into the crowd about 8 feet away. It took what seemed to be an age for him to resurface whilst frantic stage crew followed him to retrieve him and his guitar and hoist him back onto the stage whilst his fellow band members continued to play without him. Normal service resumed for a couple of songs, before Carl Barat announced that there was a birthday to celebrate as cannons dispersed a barrage of confetti over the stage and the crowd. They played for about 90 minutes, with Pete and Carl taking it in turn to sing

lead vocals and periodically share the mic to sing together, as they often do, performing all their classic hits. It was the hottest night of the year and temperatures inside the outdoor venue were scorching as an excited crowd responded to the energy coming off the stage. Carl Barat quickly removed his leather jacket followed by his T shirt, finishing the gig shirtless whilst the torn remains of Pete’s shirt flapped around his sweaty body. Towards the end of their set large balloons were let loose over the crowd and they were tossed around the venue. Pete launched into an acoustic cover of Oasis song ‘Don’t look back in anger’, which had everyone singing along, before he chucked his guitar into the crowd at the end, which was followed by desperate attempts by security staff to retrieve it. As he walked offstage he took a picture off the wall and threw it into the crowd below, which some happy punter caught and walked off with. At the back of the venue, someone had jumped into the off limits swimming pool. A night to remember - pure rock n’ roll craziness! Happy 10th birthday Ibiza Rocks and please keep bringing these amazing bands to Ibiza.

Hard Times Vista Club

Stan Farrow

As a clubber who has been at it since the gramophone was the DJ’s tool of choice, I’m interested to see how this seminal club night from the early ‘90s in Leeds would actually fit in to the minimal packed world of Ibiza. Hard Times originally came into existence when farmer Steve Raine spent a night at The Hacienda in Manchester, one of the first house clubs in the U.K. So impressed was he with this new sound and experience, that he decided Leeds needed a similar night and proceeded to book the biggest local and American names. Todd Terry, Kevin Saunderson and David Morales are just a few of jocks that regularly played in the Music Factory and NATO – two big venues at the time. After taking a break from the scene and spending time looking after his farm and family, Steve Raine and Hard Times threw themselves back into the dance world in 2012 with a

night at The Warehouse, back in their home town of Leeds. Instead of bringing in a raft of new DJs, Steve decided to stick with his tried and tested roster which of course attracted the same sort of friendly and up-for-it crowd which Hard Times is renowned for. Now to Ibiza, where the line-up throughout the season is equally tried and tested with appearances from old hands like Todd Terry and the like. My hired escorts and I turn up just as Jason Bye is wrapping up his set. It’s 2.30am and the club looks great. We walk through the front doors and then through the Coco Loco bar, which acts as a chill out area, before strutting out onto the dancefloor. Harry Romero and Joeski start playing back to back and we settle back against the wall and start wiggling. Joeski is renowned for his tribal beats, whilst ‘Choo Choo’ Romero more for his filtered disco-loops, so we are treated to a flip flop from one sound to the other throughout their set. After building up a bit of a sweat – the aircon struggles to keep up with the sound system – the headlining Rhythm Masters start banging out straight-up smiley house music from vocal gems, to filtered-disco loops, to 808 drenched funk. They play a ton of tracks from their new not quite ready yet album and finish the night with a new rework of their own remix of Todd Terry’s ‘Jumpin’ which is being currently being championed by Carl Cox. My highlights of the evening are the acid house funk fest of a track from the new album which hasn’t yet got a name, the crowd which politely queued up at the end to shake the hands with the DJs, and my escorts. Cracking night!

mental birthday bash at a small hotel in the San Antonio foothills known as Pikes. Freddie wasn’t known to be shy, and the affair was somewhat flamboyant with midget waiters balancing drink trays on their heads and all sorts of mischief going off in the pool and many rooms. Nowadays the hotel is called Ibiza Rocks House, and in an homage to the great showman, it hosts Mercury Rising every Monday for a short time with none other than DJ Harvey, a legend of the disco era. Expect to see the odd famous face and a bevvy of beautiful people enjoying the funk drenched sounds and rural ambience. Looking around at the pretty much unchanged hotel, you can just picture a larger than life moustachioed man grinning away as he plucks another glass of champagne off of a vertically challenged head and throws back his head laughing. Gawd, he would love this!

PIMEEF What is PIMEEF?

We hear a lot about PIMEEF at The Ibizan offices. This organisation has involvement with a large amount of what goes on in Ibiza, so we thought it only right to let you know exactly who they are and what they do: The Petita i Mitjana Empresa Evissa and Formentera (PIMEEF) (the Small and Medium Business of Ibiza and Formentera) is a business federation found-

and companies. PIMEEF also partners with PIME Mallorca and PIME Menorca to form the confederation PIME Balears. The main objectives of the Confederation are exercising island support for regional projects, highlighting the importance of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in the framework of the Balearic Islands and to further develop the Special Regime for the Balearics, adopted in 1998, which aims to increase the competitiveness of their companies without discrimination. ed in 1977 to defend the interests of small and medium enterprises in Ibiza and Formentera and to promote the economic and social development of both islands. Currently, PIMEEF consists of 52 associations that bring together some 1,600 companies (about 1,400 in Ibiza and 200 in Formentera) employing 8,000 workers in low season and 13,000 in high season. As with most representative business federations, PIMEEF is an indispensable interlocutor between its partners and all facets of regional and local government. PIMEEF interests are, among many others, to demand improved public infrastructure on both islands, to promote business associations and solidarity, to reduce the tax burden, engage in collective bargaining, to represent employers and provide ongoing support to associations

Page 15

To give a better and more complete service to member companies, PIMEEF consists of a range of structured technical departments: Economic - Provides information and advice on tax, subsidies, agreements with financial institutions, aid to the various sectors (trade, industry, crafts), etc. Self-employment - Advises on the procedures for business start-ups, funding lines, new sources of employment, etc. Legal - Consultation for the partners on various issues (employment, contractual, commercial, civil,) whilst also developing administrative appeals before the various public authorities. Twitter Police

Narcotics officers have received 35,000 tip-offs since launching internet campaign in 2012 Alejandra Torres Reyes - El Pais

What started as a campaign asking for the public’s help on Twitter has grown to become one of the most effective methods for cracking down on drug traffickers in Spain, with more than 800 arrests in the past two-and-a-half years. Spain’s National Police has gone from putting up wanted posters for traffickers to searching for them with help from the social networks using the hashtag #tweetredada (tweetraid). The Spanish National Police has more than 1.66 million followers on Twitter The tag allows anyone to tip off authorities about drug transactions – regardless of whether they are large or small – taking place throughout the country. The police have also set up a separate email account, antidroga@police.es for the same purpose, and are urging people to use it to “work together against the traffickers.” No one likes a squealer and, even worse, no one wants to face retaliation for passing on information about criminal activities. But the police’s new game plan has worked because citizens

do not have to identify themselves when they write in, and all the information received is treated confidentially. Once a tip is received, a group of officers at the Central Narcotics Unit will determine whether or not the information needs further investigation. The approach began in January 2012. Two-and-a-half years and more than 35,000 messages laters, the National Police have more than 1.66 million followers on Twitter. And the tip-offs continue to pour in. For example on Wednesday, authorities reported the arrests of 42 members of an alleged drug-trafficking gang that was operating out of Barcelona and Cádiz. “Gang of drug traffickers broken up and 5,000 kg hashish and 27 cars seized in Barcelona and Cádiz...,” the police tweeted. During the course of the investigation, which began in April 2013, the police said they received numerous anonymous tipoffs “of vital importance” that led to the arrests. The tweet about the arrested traffickers ends with a final message from the National Police giving their thanks in Catalan: “¡Molt gràçies!”

This past Sunday’s reading and the topic of the sermon were taken from Eph.3:14-21 written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. God’s love for his human creation is mind-boggling and this extravagant love is expressed through Paul’s letter. “My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit — not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength — that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Glory to God in the church! Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus! Glory down all the generations! Glory through all millennia! Festes de la Terra Ibiza Town Claire B

The programme has been launched for this year’s Fiesta of the Land or ‘Las Festes de la Terra’ in Ibiza Town, which begins on July 31st and continues until August 15th. The annual fiesta combines and extends the celebrations of two important events: August 5th is the saint’s day of the patron saint of Ibiza Town, Santa Maria De Les Neus or ‘Mary of the Snows’ in English, and to whom the first Catholic church and the cathedral in Ibiza are dedicated. August 8th commemorates the day in 1235 that the Catalan army overthrew the Moors, bringing Christianity to Ibiza and Formentera. It is also the saint’s day for Sant Ciriac, who was adopted as the patron saint of the island because of the significance of the date, which has become the most important holiday on the island. The varied festival program features activities for the whole family, children's activities, music, sports, exhibitions and traditional festivals of folk dancing and firework displays. The budget for this year’s fiesta is

Webiza Rocks Postbag ... Robbery—Sirenis Seaview Dear Editor We arrived for a family holiday yesterday for a 2 week stay at the above hotel. As we were checking in at approx 11.30am , a man came into the reception area of the hotel and stole a rucksack that was at my feet. The hotel have got clear images of the man as he was caught on several cctv cameras. The police have been informed and the hotel have shown them the cctv. I am asking you as a favour to please publish the photo of the man in your paper. He was wearing sunglasses and a hat (dressed like any holiday maker or tourist) and came into the hotel reception area, sat down, sussed out the surroundings and what he was going to do before stealing the bag. It was full of everything belonging to my 2 boys - 2 iPads. Books, toys, cars, pocket money, pencil case, writing paper, rubix cubes, cards, a teddy etc. so as you can imagine this man has totally ruined my boys holiday. Please contact me if you require any further information. I have a tracker on both iPads but they have not yet been turned on. Many thanks. Faye Morris Ed. It is sad to say that reports of crime, especially theft, are a relatively regular arrival in our inbox. Of these a high proportion are written with the common denominator of feeling the crime is not being taken seriously, that more could be done to apprehend the perpetrators and to retrieve lost items. As we all know things work rather differently in Ibiza than the U.K. but that is little comfort to those having perhaps their one annual break in the sun at best compromised at worst ruined. We all know too the effect such crime has on Ibiza's reputation. The victim is unlikely to become one of Ibiza’s tourism ambassadors and may well directly deter others from visiting. My initial thought on receipt was to reply as has become the norm—offering commiserations, any practical help or contact information, and what I know is probably a feeble attempt in conveying that the Island should not be judged on their unfortunate experience. It came to mind that perhaps we could offer a more tangible expression of Ibiza’s positives—to turn that frown upside down as it were. Where else to turn but to the often maligned, not least of which by myself, Ibiza winter residents group on facebook—when it’s bad it’s brutal, but when there is a community call to arms it can really shine and show what a fantastically generous community we are. My post read as follows:“Calling all kind hearted ibiza souls - especially those who work somewhere/have anything to offer that could put a smile of the faces of two boys - age 8 and 12. We've received a letter from the mum of two boys who had their suitcase stolen whilst their parents were distracted check-

ing in at Seaview Hotel in Port Des Torrent. Mum said "It was full of everything belonging to my 2 boys - 2 iPads. Books, toys, cars, pocket money, pencil case, writing paper, rubix cubes, cards, a teddy etc." Now there is no point trying to give boys that age a lesson that material goods are not the be all and end all, as at that age they kind of are, but i thought perhaps we could find some Ibiza generosity to send them away thinking of goodness in Ibiza instead of bad. So any offers? Ice cream sundae? quick jaunt round the bay on a boat? spin in a supercar? gokarts? Let me know here or on pm and i'll put you in touch with mum. They are here til August 5th” And of course the community did not disappoint. Within a couple of hours there was not only a great deal of love, but a great response of donations by some very generous people. I have shown those received below, masking the offer received in private—for which even Ibiza’s biggest cynic would have trouble acknowledging as anything other than a truly selfless act. I make no apology for the plug given to those who responded, I know it is not why they responded, but the least we can do in the spirit of one good turn deserving another.

Hi Faye Amazing response as ever from the resident community in Ibiza. Following a post explaining the theft we received the following offers for the boys. I really do hope it will help put a smile on their faces and think of Ibiza in a positive light. I have copied the donors in on this mail so that you can liaise directly with them as to when and where etc. • Clair Bear of White Rabbit Ibiza offers two gift bags " filled with toys: playing cards, marbles, water toys ect". (my son won one in a raffle recently - rather more special than your average party bag!) • Marie-Hélène Dubois offers a trip in their rib speedboat (any boys will love this) • Martin Evans of Ibiza Transport offers 50€ to try gokarting • (——————————) offers a free fun photoshoot for the boys, with face paints and dressing up fun. (i've seen some of her work today - really special) I hope they catch the thieves, but as with similar crime around the world the statistics are probably against it, so I hope you can to some extent put it aside and enjoy the rest of your stay - plenty to distract you now! Best wishes, NG I am not suggesting this is a solution that would be appropriate in every situation, but on this one occasion it felt good to offer a more positive and pro-active response than the usual tea and sympathy. It also served as another great example of what we already knew—we are Ibiza, and when it matters, we all Rock.

Happy 10th Birthday Ibiza Rocks

Ibiza Rocks is an amazing 10 years old, but it wouldn’t have got to 1 without the commitment and foresight of the founders and their hardworking team. Andy and Dawn McKay were the driving force - along with Andy’s brother Mike and partner Claire - behind the incredibly successful Manumission nights at Privilege. That initial idea for a regular live event in Ibiza was born in Manumission after they began experimenting with putting on live acts including Pete Doherty’s band, Babyshambles, in the back room. The Manumission punters were the guinea pigs to see if there was any mileage in pursuing the live event concept. Andy and Dawn thought there was and, amidst a sea of people telling them it would never work, they now have one of the most recognisable brands in live music. So big up to Andy and Dawn for having faith in the idea, for attracting mountains of young tourists to Ibiza and for giving so much to the island over the last 20 years. On behalf of the British & Irish ex-pat community for whom you are two of our greatest ambassadors, and all of your fans not least of which our own Claire B who lives and breathes Ibiza Rocks, we salute you!

Shebiza Hola Zipsters. Welcome back to the blog after a week off, kicking back in Mallorca. I'm still in the Balearics but have hopped over to the White Isle, Ibiza. What's not to enjoy, but I never thought I'd say this, it's too hot! It's the busiest time of the season and rather than laze around by the pool overeating, I've kept myself busy and been out and about almost every day. Starting with that most important of pastimes, shopping. The sales are on in Ibiza and they're better than any at home. Or maybe it's just because the sun is shining and I'm looking at everything through rose tinted sunnies. First stop was, and always will be, Zara. They are almost giving away the last of their summer ranges to make way for Autumn/ Winter '15 collections which seems absurd in this heat.

I picked up these beauties for under 20 Euros. Metallics are still hot for this season. They had gold but not in my size, however silver is equally as stylish in my book. Not ideal for these warm conditions but they're perfect for a night out at Ibiza Rocks. I have mostly been parading around in these show stopping sandals which were sent to me by Vanessa

Townsend of Heels Boutique in Essex. I have featured HB in Zips It Up before and I am blown away by this pair. They're actually greek sandals but work equally well over the other side of the Med in the Balearics. Having spent a bit of time in Magaluf and San Antonio, the party youth zones of both islands, it seems one fashion remains very strong and shows no sign of going away. 50s style highwaisted shorts that allow your bum cheeks to 'air'. Only yesterday I watched some poor bloke walk into a lamp post while 'observing' this trend. I don't mind the look. If you haven't been cursed with a touch of the orange peel effect then why not? But what I loathe is the new / old snow wash denim which has done a full circle. I (kind of) remember this horrific fabric last time round and shudder to see it has reared - quite literally - its ugly head again. Anyway, onto this weeks blog and we go all minimal at Armani Exchange. Georgio has provided the perfect all white capsule wardrobe, plus Australian flares have arrived, but not in the way you'd imagine, and also we take a look at superWAG Abbey Clancey's range

and statement prints, with prices ranging from just £16 to £40. Matalan is renowned for its low prices. Let's hope the quality isn't in proportion to the price on the tags. Highlights are a thigh -high split red maxi, a floral print dress and a 70s inspired mini dress. Also her signiture pencil skirt, which perhaps only works if you have snake hips and pins as long as Abbey's. But it's perfect for the festival season and the range is sure to be a big hit with her fans. Abbey and her husband, football star Peter Crouch, welcomed newborn 'Liberty Rose' into the world last month Amanda doesn’t like snow wash denim and Abbey is already back in peak form. Not jealous. I'm not fond of a WAG. Victoria Beckham managed to slip the net and gained some cred but the rest leave me in a cold sweat. But for every rule there is an exception, and one stands out from the rest and not just due to the loftiness of the footballer in her life. Enter Abbey Clancey. huge inspiration for the collection. I love the whole 70s vibe and it’s big on all the catwalks - the entire collection is a great way to throw some glamour into summer holidays or festivals. I’ve included some classic shapes including bell sleeves and lace-up front minis, with bold prints, which are ideal to brighten up your summer wardrobe.” The good news is you don't have to wait long to get your hands on this collection. The Abbey by Abbey Clancey range is available online and in selected stores, nationwide right now. She has also added an accessories range featuring everything from fringed heels to snakeskin clutches, all looking way more expensive than they actually are. So the next question is "Where is the nearest Matalan?". Can't say I've ever been before... but that's a different story. www.matalan.co.uk/ womens/brands/abbey-by -abbey-clancy

Just in time for these last seconds of summer, the White Edition features dresses, culottes, tops and a blazer in gauzy textures, sheer paneling, and breezy pleats. You can clearly see the departure from Armani Exchange collections of seasons past. The new direction is more about structure and Armani’s signature sleek lines in great-feeling fabrics, bringing the Exchange arm of his Armani empire more in line with the others – Emporio, Giorgio, Prive, Jeans and Collezioni. I’ve been told Signor Armani really has his hands in the initiative, which I'm tickled pink to hear, because I'm skeptical whether it's true. The seven-piece collection features my favourite garment - the shirt dress - and teamed with a sun tan and some Vanish for the occasional spillage, this is the perfect capsule wardrobe for short breaks to the med. Expect to see more in this vein, as the entire Armani Exchange brand is getting a similar upgrade. Another capsule collection will be released later this year, complementing the White

Sport Jezza’s Sports Report ... Jeremy Parmenter OMG, what a disastrous new photo! My fault really, 'cos I requested Our Ed to change the existing photo, as it made me look like an ageing Sat Night Fever swinger, which, I promise I'm not, well, not really! So I sent him some choices and this new one makes me look like Graham Turner, a complete “did-I-not-likethat” onion-head, so please, Sir, change it for one of the others, and quick before what little reputation I had is completely ruined!

Cycling

Gotta start this week with history being made at the w/end with “Va Va

few setbacks, Team Sky's True Brit, Chris Froome had the ultimate honour, for the 2nd time in 3 years, of cycling down the ChampsElysees as holder of the Tour de France 2015 Champion's yellow jersey. Never really in doubt, in my mind, since he took a 3.10 minute lead over his nearest rivals nearly 2 weeks ago, but, having negotiated what he described as “the hardest climb of my life” up the 21 hairpin bends on Alpe d'Huez where he was pushed to the limit by his nearest rival, Colombia's Quintana, he was safely shepherded home by his Sky team, and completed the race some 78 seconds ahead of the rest, so, great for him, great for Team Sky,

great for team manager Sir Dave Brailsford as he picked up his 3rd title in 4 years and great for GB cycling in

general. Huge Congrats, Chris, you did us proud!

Sailing

Unusual for me to include this (give me power any day!) but for those of you not in the know, Olympic sailing hero Sir Ben Ainslie is leading the GB challenge in the America's Cup World Challenge, just starting in Portsmouth, in their quest to challenge the holders for the ultimate test in Bermuda in 2017. Having convinced various sponsors, including Land Rover BAR, to fork out God knows how many millions of Pounds over the last 18 months, and back him in his quest to win this Blue Chip Cup, almost 100,000 fans cheered him and his team on Saturday as he took 1st in Race 1 and then 2nd in Race 2, and they now sit one point ahead of Emirates Team New Zealand and current holders, Oracle Team USA, in 3rd.

Golf

Yet another triumph for Britain as, in the Omega European Masters at Cranssur-Cierre, Switzerland, there was a brilliant British 1,2 and 3, led by one of the

Ben Ainslie in his new boat recent Open heroes, Danny Willett, and followed home by Matt Fitzpatrick, only a shot behind, and then, Tyrrell Hatton, a further shot behind. So well done to all 3 and just proves that it's not just the household names of McIlroy, Rose, Westwood et al that are leading British golf from the front. Also, I know it's old hat now, but as a post-script for last week and for those of you who didn't know, the USA's Zach Johnson was the winner of the recent Open at St Andrews after a 3 player 4 hole play-off so well done to him as he celebrated his 2nd Major.

team can come back from the recent Lords humiliation by our friends from Down Under and dish out a bit of their own medicine, as per Cardiff in the 1st Test. Should be interesting and I'm not making any silly predictions, but wouldn't it be great if the Red Rose could go on to the 4th Test, 2-1 up! OK, just dreaming!!

Also, b****y typical isn't it, as soon as England have a bad day at the office, back come the KP-lovers, led by that absolute buffoon (or is it baboon!) Piers Morgan, calling for him to be reinstated in to the England team.. Now I am not a great admirer of Sports Columnist Patrick Collins (Mail on Sunday) but I have to con-

now and with the 3rd Ashes Test starting on Wednesday, at Edgbaston, and a couple of changes to the England team (as forecast by yours truly), let's sincerely hope that Captain Cook's

gratulate him with his headline “Just Ignore KP's beached Wail” on Sunday. Apparently KP tweeted “What a waste, just lying on a beach, I wish I could help. Should be in UK now prepping for the 3rd Test! So silly, really! So sad!” Yes, my friend, you are a very sad, very silly person and I suggest you stay where you are, mate, soaking up the sun, because, once and for all, “Your Country Does Not Need You!” Moving on, there appears to be a trend starting here as in the Women's Ashes Series, also taking place in England, Charlotte Edwards' England team started off brilliantly by winning the first ODI at Taunton last week, to take a 1-0 lead, but then, as per the men, succumbed to an Aussie fight-back at Bristol to leave the Series 11. Hoping to take the lead yet again, England's hopes were dashed by the appalling weather at Worcester over the w/end which caused the match to be postponed until Monday (today) so watch this space! Finally for this week, the two rugby codes and in

Rugby League

the final 23rd Super League matches of the regular season were played over the w/end with the top 8 going in to the Super8 play-off's and with Leeds coming out on top after their 36-22 win over Catalans, they now have home advantage over 2nd placed St Helens and 3rd placed Wigan, who are joined by Castleford, Warrington, Huddersfield, Hull and Catalans with the top 4 going through to the Grand Final play-off's. Sounds a bit complicated to me, being a soft Southerner but there you go!

Rugby Union

A great finish is in store next month in the Southern Hemisphere Championship as the title will be between those old foes, Australia and New Zealand, as the former beat Argentina 34-9 and the latter South Africa 27-20. The question is, can a pumped up Wallaby team put one over the All Blacks to take momentum in to the upcoming World Cup this autumn? We shall see! What, no Footie? No, not yet, as pre-season matches abound but with the big KO on August 8th, you won't have long to wait! That's all I've got time and space for this week so have a good 'un! Jezza

but Nasr had to be satisfied with 11th, both were in the points until the Silver Arrows flew past them. Williams had a tough race with Massa causing a restart as his car was out of position, a slow pit stop and struggling on the medium tyres meant he could only muster 12th, Bottas on the other hand looked likely to take points home but split his tyre after the safety car came in and couldn’t better 13th. Manor (formally Marussia) were last to see the chequered flag with Merhi 15th, he lost time having his headrest replaced early on and while Stevens retired lap 65 with serious vibrations, he was classified 16th having completed 90% of the race.

Force India will be quick to put this weekend behind them, following Perez’ roll on Friday their weekend only got worse. Hulkenberg suffered ‘complete front wing failure’ when it dropped off and under his car causing him to smash into the tyre barriers, he was unharmed and the safety car was deployed due to track debris. As a precaution Perez had a new nose fitted however this made little difference as he retired with

Mind Body & Soul The Breath of Life

Sabina Brownstein Studies show that simply learning how to breathe correctly can have remarkable positive effects on both your physical body, and your emotional balance. The Farmingham Heart Study has been monitoring thousands of participants over a 30-year period, and they have come up with convincing evidence that one of the most significant factors for good health and long life is how well you breathe. Breathing correctly is critical in maintaining your level of oxygen, and for sending it to the cells of your body where it creates energy. In addition, a full 70% of the elimination of wastes from your body comes through your breathing. Unfortunately, most people are not getting the full benefits from their breathing, and

Its Good To Talk Kate Stillman Dear Kate, I wanted to write a letter to you and all the readers not so much about a problem I have, but more to give others an idea that things can get better and do get better if you can trust yourself to go through the darkness and come out the other side, rather than look for a way to avoid it. We moved to Ibiza in 2010 and left many very good friends at home, it was hard to say bye, but most of them came to visit. One friend in particular didn’t come and always had an excuse as to why he didn’t make the trip. We had been friends for 25+ years and I was getting annoyed with the excuses. Until I went home for a visit and he asked to see me (2012). He said he had something to tell me. He had been diagnosed with leukaemia and had been having treatment in secret for some time. He had decided to tell only me and his other best friend, such a hard secret to keep and a huge ask on his part, but I kept it and supported him as good as I could being so far away. Sometimes he was ill for weeks on end and hadn’t the strength to talk to me or even send a text, so I would go through periods of literally not knowing if he was dead or

in fact, the average person uses only about 20% of their lung capacity. The good news is that poor breathing habits can be reversed with practice, and the first step is to understand just how your respiratory system works. A helpful analogy is to think of your lungs in terms of a bellows that is used to blow air onto a fire. When you open the bellows, it creates a vacuum within and this sucks the air in. You then compress the bellows which forces the air out (and helps to boost the energy of your fire). Your lungs work in a similar way. There is a muscle just below your lungs called the diaphragm. When you breathe in it is because this muscle is pushing downwards, and this creates a vacuum effect which sucks air into your lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes upwards it pushes the air out of the lungs, thus causing you to exhale. You can see this most clearly by watching a baby sleeping on her back. As the baby breathes in her tummy rises because the diaphragm is pushing down on it. As the baby exhales her tummy goes back down as the diaphragm relaxes upward. Tummy out = air in; tummy in = air out. This ‘abdominal breath’ is the way your body is meant to breathe, but most people have lost this natural breath-

alive. It was torture. He also wasn’t keen on me visiting him, he didn’t like to appear weak and in need. December 2013 and I hadn’t seen him for over a year, I was in London and basically said he had to see me. He was having chemo as a day patient so I went to sit with him. We laughed till we cried, argued like brother and sister, reminisced about our Uni days, and talked about the future, his convalescing in Ibiza once treatment had finished, helping my husband with the veg patch and lazing on the beach. Six hours flew by and as I left he shouted to me “hey sis, sorry I’ve been so stubborn, please come and visit me again, it has been the best medicine”, I made a cheeky reply and waltzed off. Two weeks later he caught an infection and wasn’t able to fight it off and died. I was shocked, he seemed OK, I was angry, why oh why hadn’t I gone back to visit in those two weeks, I was sad my soul mate and confidante wasn’t at the end of the phone or text any more. His passing was so raw, I have had others who were close die before but no one who was so young, who had such plans, and who I really had grown up with, who knew the real me. Not many understood the depth of our friendship, we could go for months with out seeing each other and we didn’t feel the need to attend the birthday parties, etc. but we had a bond, an understanding

ing rhythm and instead only take shallow breaths into their upper chest. Shallow chest breathing gives you much less air per breath, so to compensate your body takes a higher number of breaths. This constricts your blood vessels resulting in less oxygen going to the brain, heart and all other organs. In addition, your exhalations are weaker so you are not thoroughly eliminating toxins through the breath, and they build-up throughout the body. Learning to breathe properly re-balances your system by taking in more oxygen. You can also help to regulate heart rate, blood pressure, circulation and digestion by consciously changing the rhythm and depth of your breath. Studies have shown that deep breathing exercises can also trigger the body’s “relaxation response”, a physiological state of deep relaxation that alters the way you respond to stress. The key is to find a reliable teacher who can get you started in the right way. The goal is to create a daily practice that integrates healthy breathing into your life so that you can naturally release stress, calm your nervous system and energize you body. that I don’t think I will ever have with anyone else. His not being here anymore meant I sunk to lows that I never thought imaginable, but lows that were so private that most people didn’t even know except my amazingly supportive husband. Now, 18 months later, I can just about think of him and smile, smile at the crazy student antics we got up to, smile that I was lucky enough to meet him, smile that we chose each other as friends, and smile that he would so love the life we have carved out for ourselves here. So, I suppose what I am trying to say is that when something truly awful and unimaginable happens, you have to let it be awful and trust yourself that, if you go to that awful place, you will be able to come out the other side. Keep trying to pretend it hasn’t happened or the emotions don’t exist, and you will find it very hard to smile authentically, and that is painful. We are more able to survive than we give ourselves credit for, but the key is learning and trusting ourselves to touch the darkest and most painful places so that we can see that we can survive them. I hope this helps someone, Thank you. Dear Annon, Thank you for sharing your touching and deeply personal experience, sorry for your loss. Take care, Kate.

Thursday 30 July to Wednesday 5th August 2015 ARIES – The Fool Trust is a key issue for you this week. The Fool card certainly doesn’t mean you are one; quite the opposite in fact. He’s urging you to take risks and to have self-belief. That it doesn’t matter, follow your heart and believe in your intuition. There are no wrong moves; it’s your reaction to unfolding events that makes the difference. TAURUS - The Sun This card promises happy times as well as new opportunities which, if you’re sharp enough, should be grasped by both hands. You'll be inventive in increasing your personal wealth so embrace the idea of success. Team efforts work best. If your health has given you cause for concern, this healing card brings vitality and a sense of well-being at last. GEMINI – Five of Cups Happiness ahead is indicated by this card; only if you are prepared to cross an emotional bridge and heal a hurt that was influenced by events that took place in the past - but still has the power to wound. It's through disappointments that we're able to grow and work towards transforming life. So, let things go and move on. CANCER - Nine of Swords This week start the process of conquering your fears by not letting them get the better of you. Swords represent our thoughts; so much of what you fear is created in your mind and may NEVER happen. Don’t allow negative thought patterns to dominate your life, as there is nothing to fear, but fear itself. Keep your thoughts positive. LEO - Justice. Get to grips with health matters and decide on a diet that suits you. You’ll feel more balanced about situations that have left you feeling sensitive and out of kilter recently; a sense of harmony is restored. Leo's who write for a living; it’s time to use your mind and imagination and begin a project which improves your bank balance. VIRGO – Strength You’re able to show others just how strong and resilient you are, especially if the going gets tough this week. Whatever presents you with a challenge is easily dealt with and you are an inspiration to friends, family or colleagues when it comes to dealing with obstacles. Stand your ground, but do so with dignity. Resist the urge for revenge. LIBRA – Ace of Swords Again, but with more emphasis on personal triumph. You're able to outfox a fox; win applause; seal the deal; get the girl/guy, etc. You get the picture? You’re original and inventive this week. Those of you involved in the arts or media relations are inspired and ultra-creative. This of course brings recognition of your talents and the appropriate financial reward. SCORPIO - Two of Wands Problems can be sorted out amicably, so long as you don’t take the moral high ground. Acting in a superior way won’t make you popular. If you don’t care about that, then you’ll be putting yourself in a vulnerable position. Who knows when you might need support from allies? Don’t act aloof; friendliness and a positive outlook win new friends. SAGITTARIUS – Temperance Finally you’ll be given recognition and praise for what you have been diligently working on recently. Introduce a more harmonious and balanced routine into your day to day life; as it’s true that what you project on to others is a reflection of your own inner world. If any discordant situations arise, handle them right and you will be alright! CAPRICORN – Ace of Cups Good news is on the way and with it a reason to celebrate. It’s a time of new beginnings and for some a birth that brings friends and family together. If you're awaiting an outcome to long running saga the indications are that you get the result you want. Emotional balance comes easy after a period of stress and vulnerability. AQUARIUS - Ten of Disks Adding to your material security is easy this week as others like what you do and are willing to dig deep for your services. This card also indicates an unexpected windfall, so you might want to speculate to accumulate. Life is offering you opportunities that a year ago would have been hard to imagine. How wonderful, so be thankful! PISCES – The Star (reversed) Pondering on what's the life plan? The plan is not external, the plan is YOU. Don’t bury your head in the sand; you know what needs to be done. This loss of clarity is temporary; giving you opportunity to reconnect at the deepest level of who you are. You’re a soul with a body, not a body with a soul.

Greixonera Ibicenca Recipe

use of yesterday’s bread (ensaimadas). Greixonera is the name of the earthenware dish that this is cooked in, but you can use a cake mould or baking tray. This version of the recipe couldn’t be simpler and is perfect for a children’s cookery session. Once mastered you will want to move up to caramelising the sugar for that professional touch.

A firm—well actually a rather wobbly—favourite in the Ibizan office. Incredibly easy to make, so don’t be shy, give local pie a try. Ibizan Greixonera used to served on special occasions, however these days it is found on the desert menu of most Ibizan restaurants. Similar to British bread and butter pudding in that it makes
