Fictional User Interfaces Nicky Hope Brief 6 Design Boards


Product Overview A set of fictional user interfaces created for the film and game industry. Designed to appeal to the video game industry, and add a brand new element to my portfolio.


Research Fictional user interfaces employ dramatic visuals, information overload, and monotonous colour themes to convey an exciting and believable, albeit almost entirely unusable graphical user interface.

Operation Starfall Earth Defence Council

Mission Target Audience The target audience for FUIs is dependant on the circumstances; in some ways it has two: the film studio who are commissioning it and and the audience watching the film. It has to look exciting for the viewer, and appropriate for the context of the film. It must appeal to sci-fi fans and film studios alike.

Initial Ideas It was clear from the start that simple colour themes, super dramatic visuals and information overload would be necessary visual elements to make the UI look and feel appropriate for a sci-fi film or game. The FUIs developed in this collection are for a military spacecraft set within a hypothetical sci-fi film.


Product Development Additional colours were experimented with, then rescinded in order to fall in line with the research, and a variety of typefaces and information types were tested. The designs had to look and feel urgent and exciting, with some degree of realism but an overarching aesthetic of dramatic future tech.

Animation Animating the FUI can inject liveliness and drama, and help to imagine how it would actually work in operation. In lieu of total interface animation, I collaborated with another designer on my course to animate small elements after feedback sessions reinforced the benefit.

Helvetica

SEVASTOPOL

Typography

Since the release of Alien in 1979, Helvetica has played a major role in representing modernist typography in science-fiction. Sevastopol Interface is a font developed specifically for the FUIs in the Alien franchise, and so seemed incredibly appropriate for use.
