It will shortly celebrate its 180th year of operation, has links to past presidents as well as the Superbowl, and is one of the few brands that has successfully trademarked a colour yet there is much more to Tiffany & Co than meets the eye, as Tracey Porter reports.

S

The owner of a collection of 10 different items of jewellery, Tiffany has accompanied Sato for all the monumental moments in the young teacher’s life.

She may not realise it but Sato’s physical and emotional connection to the brand is precisely what 25-year-old American merchant Charles Lewis Tiffany had in mind when he borrowed US$1,000 from his father to start a stationery and fancy goods store in New York in 1837.

It was there when she came of age, there on the day she got engaged and there when she introduced her two beautiful babies to the world.

Today the retail group has a presence in more than 30 countries – including several stores in Australia – and has plans to expand its global footprint, opening a further 12 stores last year alone.

To her, the brand and its distinctive Tiffany Blue Box is a physical manifestation of everything she holds dear.

The high-end retailer now boasts worldwide annual sales of around US$4.1 billion.

She has collated several necklaces including the big heart, double heart and infinity, several rings and the Paloma Picasso earrings – the whole of her collection so much more than the monetary sum of its parts.

Heritage and integrity is everything to the brand. The Tiffany logo has graced the Congressional Medal of Honour and the American dollar bill, while at one time the brand was called upon to create china for the White House and jewellery for several US first ladies.

“I was 16-years-old when I received my first piece, a classic clasp bracelet with charms, which my parents gave me. I also have two baby girl combs which my parents also gave to me when my daughters were born.

While the famed jewellery store does have items at entry-level prices available for purchase, many have an asking that stretches well into seven figures.

ydney woman Megan Sato is the ultimate Tiffany & Co disciple.

“To me the collection represents a social and emotional investment. It connects me to my family and that's what I love.”

A pair of Diamond Drop Earrings (featuring a marquise diamond, a pear shaped diamond and two brilliant round diamonds) commands US$350,000 while a Tiffany ring with an Important diamond which

involved Tiffany’s gemologists spending years locating a D colour 12 carat diamond in this size is listed for around US$2.1 million. It is however, surrounded by dozens of much smaller diamonds and set in a platinum band. Celebrities too have done their bit to help cement the brand as the world’s premier jeweller with everyone from Naomi Watts and Jessica Biel to Grace Coddington and Ni Ni among those adorned in Tiffany jewels and timepieces. But it wasn’t always all about the diamonds. Initially stocked with rare and exotic finds, including pieces from ancient India, Chinese porcelains and French accessories, Charles Tiffany turned to gems only when the fall of Louis Philippe’s regime in the 1840s saw French aristocrats flee the country and exchange their diamonds for cash. Seeing the buying opportunity before him, Charles put the profits of his fledging store on the line and spent it on a cache of diamonds. It was also around this time the iconic colour that came to be known as Tiffany Blue was first associated with the silver smith and jewellery brand after Charles selected it for the cover of Blue Book, Tiffany’s annual collection of exquisitely handcrafted jewels and then went on to use it on its shopping bags and across other promotional materials. Also referred to as robin’s-egg blue or forget-me-not blue, Tiffany & Co now believe the distinctive colour may have been chosen because of the popularity of the turquoise gemstone in 19th-century jewellery. Turquoise was also a traditional favorite of Victorian brides who gave their attendants a dove-shaped brooch of turquoise as a wedding day memento.

In due course he would also mandate that the coveted Tiffany Blue Boxes could only be acquired with a Tiffany purchase. Charles's uncanny ability for being in the right place in the right time, again held him in good stead when, to meet Victorian society's demand for silver goods, Tiffany purchased the operation of another prominent New York silversmith John C Moore, which established the company’s design and silver manufacturing heritage. In 1851 Tiffany instructed Moore to make the silverware on par with English sterling—92.5% silver and 7.5% base metals—a standard the United States eventually adopted. Whether through clever marketing or through the efforts of its devoted audience, the Tiffany brand has long been associated with achievement and this has, naturally, been carried over to the sporting arena. Tiffany created the first world championship baseball trophy in 1888 and has produced the World Series trophy since 2000. In 1909 it designed an eight-foot trophy for the Indianapolis 500 and today makes the NASCAR Sprint Cup. In 1967, the NFL awarded the first Super Bowl trophy, a Tiffany design, and Tiffany has also created rings to honor Super Bowl winners and its equivalents in Major League Baseball and basketball’s NBA. For more than 20 years it has created the trophies for the US Open Tennis championship winners. But just seven years after the decision to manufacture silver, the fortunes of the company changed forever when Charles had the foresight to purchase a 287-carat fancy yellow diamond. It was cut to 128.54 carats and named the Tiffany Diamond. In 1886 Tiffany & Co introduced the Tiffany Diamond engagement ring. Years later Unique Luxur y

the Tiffany brand would be propelled to worldwide attention when actress Audrey Hepburn donned the Ribbon Rosette necklace set with the Tiffany Diamond while promoting “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Having had a host of notable designers working with it over the years, including Elsa Peretti, Jean Schlumberger and Paloma Picasso, Tiffany & Co has a clear policy never to discontinue its designs but rather “retire” them. This has inevitably meant many have tried to emulate its success by replicating its offerings. In recent years Tiffany & Co has developed a reputation for fiercely defending its intellectual property program and is renowned for coming hard at counterfeiters and those it believes have infringed its trademark. In a highly publicised case in 2005 the company attempted to sue online auction website eBay alleging it had breached copyright by profiting from sales of Tiffany jewellery, by buying sponsored links advertising eBay listings for Tiffany items and that eBay should be held jointly liable for selling counterfeit Tiffany items. The action was unsuccessful.

In 1886 Tiffany & Co. designed and engraved the invitations for the Statue of Liberty inauguration

However, in September 2015 the group successfully took multinational retailer Costco to court after it was found it had

The design studio at Tiffany’s Union Square store (c. 1887)

breached Tiffany & Co copyright by using its name on signs in jewellery cases and to describe certain engagement rings that were not made by the jeweller. Held accountable by its large shareholding group, Tiffany's also takes its corporate responsibility obligations seriously, its recent annual reports charting its ongoing commitment to minimising environmental impact. One of new CEO Frédéric Cumenal’s first tasks in taking the helm last year was to appoint the company’s first chief sustainability officer, charging her with setting the company’s strategic sustainability agenda. Cumenal says sustainability is a critical element of the Tiffany's business strategy, and that the company believes sustainable principles should be practiced in every part of its offering. “Of the many reasons to take pride in Tiffany, none is more important than our long-held commitment to the environment and its people. World-class leadership in sustainability among great luxury brands is rooted in a humble understanding of our impact on, and thus responsibility to, the world,” he noted recently. The company’s biggest environmental challenge came in the form of responsible mining and sourcing of raw materials, Cumenal says it is important Tiffany's uses the power of its brand and voice to encourage ethical behaviour. To this end the company is a founding member of the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance, a group whose main goal is to work towards developing a globally recognised standard for responsible mining. Currently Tiffany's sources its gems by forming

Jean Schlumberger’s Fleur de Mer clip of diamonds, sapphires, platinum and 18 ct gold from the estate of Elizabeth Taylor

direct relationships with many of the mines that supply diamonds and precious metals. In 2014, 100 percent of its rough diamonds were sourced either directly from a known mine or a supplier with multiple known mines. The majority of the company's rough diamonds are cut and polished at Laurelton Diamonds facilities around the world to maintain the highest quality standards. Meanwhile the company has also joined the U.S. World Wildlife Trafficking Alliance to encourage the jewellery industry to eliminate illicit products, including coral and ivory, from their supply chains. Other initiatives include ensuring the paper used for the Tiffany Blue Boxes comes from renewable and well-managed resources, a commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as well as announcing a multimillion-dollar internal Green Fund dedicated to global energy efficiency, renewable energy and other projects that generate cost, carbon and resource savings. In 2000 Tiffany's established a foundation to drive its philanthropic efforts. Its main agenda is to support organisations dedicated to the stewardship of natural resources and award grants to non-profit groups “focused on responsible mining, coral and marine conservation and urban parks”. In addition the company has also worked hard at ensuring its employees are kept happy by reframing its diversity and inclusion approach. This has led to the introduction of what it calls the Tiffany Academy for Excellence and Diversity in Leadership – a talent pipeline and rotational development program to attract, retain and advance diverse, high-potential talent.

Introduced in 1853, the Tiffany Blue Box® represents excellence, as shown by this rare box that notes the grand prize win at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair

reathtakingly beautiful in every way, Chapel House is the epitome of an historic country estate with all the charm and character of yesteryear. Surrounded by 9 acres of magnificent gardens, the property incorporates several truly unique buildings each with their own amazing story. The oldest building is the Cobb and Co Inn, built of stone around 1832 and is mostly in 'original' condition. Behind that building is the quaint cottage, now a 2 bedroom guest cottage named The Owl Pen, which is believed to have been the original kitchen for the Inn. Attached to the cottage is 'the studio'. It started its life as an open-air hand ball court for the Franciscan Monks who occupied the site from approximately 1919 to 1925. A second storey was added in the 1970's and was used as an art studio for 10 years by John Olsen, probably Australia's best known contemporary artist. The Franciscans also built the Georgian-style main home in 1920, attaching it to the Inn. This magnificent home features a large country kitchen, beautiful light-filled dining and lounge rooms, a billiard room and 4 bedrooms. The current owners have filled the garden beds with thousands of bulbs and roses, built arbours, created meandering streams and lovingly tendered the magnificent grounds and buildings. The property also incorporates 170 acres of land, an enormous dressage arena and holding paddock and is located in the historic village of Rydal. Rydal is a small Heritage-Listed Village with two churches, a hotel and the railway station. The nearest shops are in Wallerawang about ten minutes drive away. The property is located just 20 minutes from Lithgow and 2.5 hours drive (& 3 hours by train) from Sydney. Chapel House is a truly magical estate that must be seen to be truly appreciated.

McLaren 570GT The most usable sports car to date

T

he recent global dynamic debut of McLaren’s new 570GT in Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, about 180 miles off the west coast of Africa, was every bit as dramatic and spectacular as the star of the show itself. It showcased the 570GT in a league of its own, and piqued the interest of supercar fans all around the world.

Everyday Usability The 570GT is the most practical model ever launched by McLaren Automotive, targeted towards longer journeys and weekends away.

The two-seat, mid-engined sportscar is the newest model in the marque’s recently announced Sports Series family. Practical enough for everyday use, the 570GT is the most refined and roadbiased McLaren yet, designed with a focus on day-to-day usability and long distance comfort. It offers increased levels of practicality and comfort, while remaining a true McLaren.

The star feature of the 570GT is undoubtedly that Panoramic Roof, and the bright sunshine that fills the interior with light – never heating it, because of clever technology, just lighting it to make it feel airy and spacious. The standard fixed glass Panoramic Roof is treated with transmission tint – the same as the glass roof of the renowned McLaren P1™ – and also features Sound & Solar Film to absorb solar radiation while providing additional noise insulation.

The McLaren 570GT joins the 570S Coupé and 540C Coupé as the third model in the Sports Series. The clean lines of the revised glasshouse give the 570GT a sleek and refined silhouette, and mark out the second of three body styles, which will eventually complete the Series.

The front luggage area remains unchanged from the Coupé, while a further 220 litres of space is available behind the seats on the leather-lined Touring Deck. This additional space is accessed via the side opening Glass Hatch, which opens on the kerbside whether left- or right-hand drive and is framed by carbon fibre.

34

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

Craftsmanship As with all models in the Sports Series, the 570GT is extensively equipped throughout with the latest technologies and the highest quality materials. As standard, the new model features extended leather upholstery, electrically adjustable heated seats with memory function, front and rear parking sensors, an electric steering column with easy entry/exit function, soft close doors and a quieter exhaust system compared to the 570S Coupé. Available from launch are a range of ‘By McLaren’ designer interior specifications, designed to demonstrate the breadth of personalisation available. As with the 570S Coupé, these are available in a choice of Luxury or Sport configurations, and are designed to showcase the interior design of the 570GT, and compliment the exterior colour choices.

Design Meets Performance Perhaps the first outward sign of the GT’s unique character, is in the rear. The dramatic buttresses and exposed engine cover found at the back of the 570S are replaced by sleek new glasswork that rolls seamlessly out of the GT’s muscular rear haunches. The buttresses provided an aerodynamic gain for the S, but their loss is rectified on the GT by the smallest of modifications: a marginally extended fixed rear spoiler.

First introduced on the iconic McLaren F1, and now signature to each of the models in the McLaren Automotive range, the 570GT features distinctive dihedral doors, which open upwards and outwards to aid ingress and egress from the cabin. The design includes a ‘floating tendon’, which channels air into the side air intake. Body-coloured door inserts, unique to the 570GT, create a more understated side profile and further differentiate the 570GT from the Coupé models. The sleeker roofline gives the new car a classic GT profile – graceful, poised, smooth. Under the skin, the 570GT has been developed with a unique dynamic setup to reflect its positioning, while retaining the supercar levels of engagement experienced on the 570S Coupé. Sharing the newly developed suspension system with the other models in the Sports Series, the 570GT emphasises long distance comfort through further fine-tuning to the system. Independent adaptive dampers can be dynamically adjusted through Normal, Sport and Track settings, and are coupled to front and rear anti-roll bars. McLaren has created something truly special, unlike any other on the market today, a unique take on the Grand Tourer. The 570GT, which has just landed on Australian soil, will surely change your perception of a supercar for everyday use and challenge you to take a seat behind the wheel. Black Badge A dark, edgy statement from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

B

lack Badge represents an attitude to life, an aspect of the Rolls-Royce brand that appeals to those people who are elusive and defiant. They are the risk takers and disruptors. They are driven by a restless spirit and aren’t afraid to break the rules. They play hard and they change the world. Technically and aesthetically, Black Badge is the alter ego of Rolls-Royce, more confident in its darkness, powerful and more demanding. Rolls-Royce Black Badge speaks to the darker, more assertive and demanding aesthetic of a new breed of customer. As a truly bespoke response to their desires, the interplay of brand and customer has had a transformative effect on the appearance and substance of Rolls-Royce Ghost and Wraith. The result is Ghost Black Badge and Wraith Black Badge.

The substantive transformation of an icon Together with the Parthenon Grille, the famous Double R logo and the Spirit of Ecstasy are the very embodiment of the Rolls-Royce brand. However, these treasured symbols of the marque have been

42

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

willing to change their identity in appropriate circumstances before. Now, the Spirit of Ecstasy and the iconic Double R lead the way once more as Rolls-Royce enters an alternative reality boldly transforming both Ghost Black Badge and Wraith Black Badge. The transformation begins with the ‘Flying Lady’ who changes neither in design, posture nor material, but in colour to represent the owner’s dark obsession. She mutates into a high-gloss black vamp, proudly sweeping through the night-time cityscape. The Double R badge on the bonnet, flanks and rear of every Black Badge motor car inverts to become silver on black, whilst chrome surfaces such as the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, lower air inlet finisher and exhaust pipes, turn dark. Black Badge also brings the colour black to new levels of intensity. The multiple layers of paint and lacquer that go into creating Black Badge are repeatedly hand polished – the most intensive painting and polishing process ever used for a solid paint colour. The result is the deepest, darkest and most intense black ever seen on a production car surface.

Advanced aerospace luxury materials and a sign of limitless possibilities await

The underlying substance of Black Badge delivered in subtly different ways

Possibilities become limitless inside the Black Badge cabin as it is suffused with a darker re-interpretation of pure luxury, inspired by the marque’s advanced materials and aerospace heritage.

Each of the motor cars that host the Black Badge spirit are unlike any Rolls-Royce before.

Seen on the surfaces of a stealth aircraft, the centrepiece of the Black Badge cabin is the aerospace-grade, aluminium-threaded, carbon fibre composite surfacing. Reimagined at Goodwood, it becomes the world’s most innovative new super-luxury material. Set into the cars’ fascia is a newly created Black Badge clock whose hands are tipped in orange and face adorned by the ‘Unlimited’ rating infinity logo. This logo previously appeared in the Phantom Drophead ‘Waterspeed’, created in 2014 to celebrate the daring of world speed record champion, Sir Malcolm Campbell. In common with Campbell, the Black Badge owner’s attitude to apparent limits is to challenge or ignore them, a trait celebrated by the ‘Unlimited’ logo. The ‘Unlimited’ infinity logo is also embroidered on the Black Badge’s upholstery as black leather combines with vibrant colours of Tailored Purple in Ghost Black Badge and Cobalto Blue in Wraith Black Badge, delivering a more edgy feel to the cabin. The final touch? The moody light that casts from the black starlight headliner, and reflected around the cabin from the polished fascia, to create a darkly atmospheric ambiance.

Suspension and steering changes, including the addition of new drive shafts, have ensured that Ghost Black Badge continues to deliver the most luxurious ride, with just that little bit of extra driver focus. Wraith Black Badge is a completely different proposition. Already the most powerful Rolls-Royce in the world at 465kw, Wraith has always been the most driver-focused car in the Rolls-Royce model range. However, Rolls-Royce’s engineering team worked painstakingly to produce an even more driver-focused, agile Wraith, while at the same time preserving the intrinsic elements of the effortless Rolls-Royce Magic Carpet Ride. Always pushing its own boundaries, always ready to deliver a truly bespoke answer to meet the customer’s desire, Rolls-Royce has transformed the very icons of its brand to access a darker side of its character more suited to this breed of successful people. The result is Black Badge. For more information on this vehicle please visit https://www.trivettbespoke.com.au/showroom/rolls-royce

A collective sigh of relief was let out by all when the collection was released and it was revealed two of Simon’s former charges - Serge Ruffieux and Lucie Meier – were behind it. Strongly referencing the house’s traditional DNA, the design team again headed to the archives for inspiration, this time drawing from the couturier’s 1949 shirtdress, titled the Ice-cream dress. Following in the designer’s footsteps by employing plant motifs and flowers as a way of firstly drawing attention to and then heightening femininity, they could be seen enlarged onto silk jacquard coatdress and on an orange and grey sweater and contrasted with embroidered flowers on the skirt below. Coats and knitwear were the other stand out pieces where the cut of the peplums, defined waists and large buttoned martingales helped define the Dior woman while collars were either rolled like scarves, pleated, plunged or folded back over the shoulders to ensure she always commands centre stage. iuccia Prada looks likely to have won herself a whole legion of new fans the globe over after putting together a collection featuring outfits suitable for both an Australian summer and an Austrian winter. The frequent flyers amongst us could almost be heard sighing with relief as the seasons collided in what was, for all intents and purposes, presented as a FW offering. Affording a nod to all things… well, just all things really. The line up included references to the early ‘70s and ‘80s with tapestry maxi skirts and belted off-theshoulder taffeta dresses yet the ‘50s was also present courtesy of dusty pink and turquoise cinched coats.

Chain bag - $3,010

It goes without saying, of course, each had been Prada-fied to reinterpret the sartorial rules of the past and to ensure they remained true to the modern Miu Miu vibe. Dressed up with brocade, fox fur and lace, but dressed down with denim and velvet, varsity jackets and belted military jackets were paired with figurefitting siren dresses.

Pearl slipper - $1,460

White bloomers with cotton shirting were there too, as were denim maxi skirts and flocked overcoats with wool breeches. Jewelled heels with bows or embellished slippers remain the footwear of choice. 56

oncern the UK economy will be impacted by the Brexit vote has seen Burberry reconsider plans for a new manufacturing factory in Leeds. The London-headquartered fashion house has announced it will review the delivery time for the designs of its planned £50m ($A88m) manufacturing and weaving facility, as it considers the “economic consequences” of what the recent vote will mean for its home base. Chairman John Peace says the factory will still be going ahead but the speed of investment might be slowed depending how “events unfold in the next few weeks”.

Following the news of the investment in late 2015, the luxury fashion house had planned to move all 800 manufacturing staff, currently based in two separate sites in Castleford and Keighley, to Leeds by 2018. Work on the new facility is due to start next year. Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief creative and chief executive officer, says the project is currently “on track” and remains a very important part of the group’s strategy. The news comes as Bailey announces plans to relinquish his title of chief executive effective next year. Marco Gobbetti, currently the boss of French brand Céline, will come in as his replacement. T

o the uninitiated, it may appear as though Miuccia Prada’s inspiration for the FW 2016 collection bearing her name is just as complex and layered as the clothes themselves making their way down the runway. For it was evident from the very first look: a sailor hat teamed with a navy shooting jacket, woolly argyle tights and a white canvas corset belt. But to those who know her best, this is just the fashion house’s creative genius at work, doing what she does best. The trick, when it comes to Ms Prada’s design aesthetic, is always to expect the unexpected. This season, it comes in the form of a medley of prints, materials and details. Locked diaries, oversize keys and giant metal roses worn around the neck or dangled around the waist or coats with over-sized fur arms and cuffs worn over geometric patterned tights. After working with Christophe Chemin on menswear AW 2016, Prada again turned to the Berlin-based visual artist to illustrate scenic and floral photographic prints that appeared on T-shirts and as placement prints on coats. Floral dresses in gold brocade and fur-lined tweed capes were other stand out items sure to illuminate the strength both inside and out of the Prada woman. 60

G

erman fashion house, Boss, has cemented its notable reputation largely on the back of some pretty impressive architectural tailoring. But while the sculptural tailoring was still there, in this, artistic director Jason Wu’s fifth season with the brand, Wu has opted to at last loosen the silhouettes. In what appears to be the adoption of a softer mood this season, Wu manages to blend precision with every line curved to define the female form. It is most evident in the silky dresses but also reaffirmed by the trousers, which boast a slouchy fit, and the volume in the front given to otherwise lean dresses and skirts. Contrasting fabrics and textures such as mesh, satin, felt and bouclé

appear in dresses while leather and suede are bonded to crepe to help with structure. Harking back to the tailoring expertise of the house, a double-faced cashmere coat features a perfectly cut cascade front and curvilinear seam detailing. Velvet flower detail can be seen throughout and is cut out by hand and re-embroidered onto wool bouclé for a unique approach to one of the season’s key themes. Hand detailing is also evident in the dresses on offer where handfrayed strips of chiffon and rows of miniature bugle beads are stitched to a fine mesh base, allowing glimpses of skin beneath. The collection’s colour palette put together by Wu includes hot pink, cinnamon, emerald, ochre and grass. Unique Luxur y

Samsung is passionate about harnessing the power of technology to inspire creativity in education. Now it has discovered a way to bring smiles to faces outside the classroom as well, as Unique Luxur y reports

Unique Luxur y

85

hen Australia’s largest classical ballet company wanted to spread the word about its performing arts education program Out There, its first step was to partner with a world leading technology company.

W

The Secondary School Workshop and Community Program, introduced for the first time this year, focuses on developing dance movement skills through co-authored choreography technique with a dance vocabulary and performing arts appreciation.

Since The Australian Ballet teamed up with Samsung as presenting partner back in 2014, the relationship between them has gone from strength to strength, helping the Out There program reach more than 18,300 students in 117 schools across five states and two territories last year alone.

As an extension to its offering Out There last month teamed with the Sydney Opera House’s Access program to offer a week-long residency program which saw the ensemble work with children to offer workshops specifically designed for their individual needs.

The program is part of Samsung’s ongoing commitment to work with a range of partners who support young people’s education across Australia. Driven largely by The Australian Ballet education team including senior education manager Katy McKeown and dance development manager Hayley Arundel, Out There exists to break down geographic, socio-economic or physical barriers to students seeking access to performing arts education. Dance educators Jasmin Dwyer, Jack Gibbs, Chantelle van der Hoek and Timothy Szczepkowski-Collins, who are also classically trained dancers, make up the Dance Education Ensemble.

Each workshop was complemented by a special performance of The Sleeping Beauty, which saw the ensemble perform a 40-minute contemporary ballet experience featuring a traditional Aurora and her Prince mixed in with a Wolf in a Hoodie, the Bluebird in a Beanie and a tomboy Red Riding Hood with a Samsung tablet in her rucksack. To further extend its support of the program, Samsung’s Corporate Social Responsibility division conceived the idea of launching an event specifically targeted at students with special needs who wished to take part in the program. Dubbed Samsung Dance Discovery, the program was an interactive multisensory experience tailor made for special needs students keen to learn more about dance.

The program itself includes workshops, demonstrations and discussion forums designed to reinforce the arts outcomes of the national curriculum.

Consisting of three different zones, each with their own cameras, mirrors and other touch points, the flexibility of the program meant participants were able to select the zone best suited to their individual strengths and capabilities.

For primary aged children this takes the form of a roving interactive presentation that offers participants an introduction to dance movement with a focus on kinetic learning. In addition the program seeks to inspire participants to use a mix of observation, participation and interaction, both with the dance presenters and each other.

The first zone, called The Rehearsal Studio, explored the movement and vision of dance. Students had the opportunity to watch a dance rehearsal on the Samsung Gear VR, affording them a realistic studio experience. Vision-impaired students joined in by touching and standing at the barre and moving in character.

The second zone was termed The Orchestra Pit and celebrated the wonderful role sound plays at the ballet and at the theatre generally. Students listened to music using Samsung Level One Pro headphones while sitting in the ‘orchestra pit’. All students, including those with a hearing impairment or those who did not feel comfortable wearing headphones, were able to touch and ‘play’ various instruments that would usually be found in the pit. The final zone, called Backstage, allowed for a more tactile experience, exploring touch and the beautiful textiles of costumes. Students were asked to match fabrics with costumes on display on tablets. The task was completed on beanbags providing a quieter zone for those who may have become overwhelmed by the new experience and the buzz around them. But it was not just participants who received an education via this process. Tess Ariotti, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Samsung, says by putting together the Dance Discovery program the company learned that students respond well to activities that they can see themselves in or have authorship over. “Our research reminded us how simple things can make a big difference. We know that repetition helped students feel more comfortable so colours, costumes and music were repeated across the zones and mirrored the Out There workshops and performance, responding to the insight that new experiences can be overwhelming for students. This approach helped calm them and was further supported by the provision of an activity booklet prior to the experience, meaning some parts of the Samsung Dance Discovery program already felt familiar.” Samsung says the most inspiring take-away was how much learning improves if students are given the right support to overcome barriers. Ms Ariotti says this is something these teachers work on every day and that it was “a very humbling moment” for Samsung to contribute to education in this way. “Through the creation of Samsung Dance Discovery we’ve been able to enhance learning outcomes and make cultural experiences more accessible for all members of our community. We believe our technology can be used to overcome barriers and support young people’s education, which is why it is important to create activities like this where we can see it in action. Through our Corporate Citizenship program, we are contributing to a future where all young Australians have access to the best technology and learning opportunities.” In addition to its support of The Australian Ballet's programs, Samsung also works with a range of partners who support young people’s education across Australia via its sponsorship of Questacon, The National Science and Technology Centre and its associated Smart Skills workshop as well as offering support to teachers through different channels such as the NSW Premier’s Samsung Technology in Rural and Remote Schools Scholarship. Samsung says it is committed to continuing to invest in this area in the future. To maximise the success of Samsung Dance Discovery it is now designing follow-up documentation to share the insights and results from the activity.

O

f the many items of exquisite beauty that furniture curator Richard Munao has around him, it is fitting a crystal ball is not among them.

This is largely because foresight has always been one of the 52-year-old’s more consistent companions. It was there when, as a teen, he defied his Italian father and Greek mother’s advice to pursue his dream of becoming a certified cabinet-maker. It was present, when nearly 20 years ago, he poured every penny he could scrape together to open up a high-end furniture business in a Sydney suburb better known for its gang warfare than for its commercial enterprise. And it was front and centre when the Cult chief executive persuaded an up-and-coming Danish brand by the name of the Republic of Franz Hansen that he was the man who could convince Australians of the value to be unearthed in its product.

But there has always been method to his madness. By fully committing both himself and his design nous to his business, Munao is today at the helm of a burgeoning and successful retail empire of five stores with representation across six states and two countries. With additional distributors in Canberra, Adelaide and Perth, Cult works with some of the world’s most influential furniture and lighting producers with prominent Scandinavian brands HAY, Carl Hansen & Sons and Erik Jorgenson, popular Italian labels Poltrona Frau, Cassina and Cappellini and award-winning Antipodeans Tim Webber and Henry Wilson among its impressive portfolio. As if that were not enough proof of Munao’s purchasing prowess, he counts among his collection a unique precious metal item that no amount of money can buy – having been named the 2011 recipient of His Royal Highness Prince Henrik’s Medal of Honour in recognition of his work in promoting Danish exports.

Cult sources the bulk of its designer brands from Denmark and Italy

108

w w w.uni quees t a te s. co m. a u

Munao (pictured) says demand for break out multi-functional pieces has led to a merging of commercial and residential furniture in recent years

Seeking to cater to both residential and commercial markets, Munao established Cult (which formerly traded as Corporate Culture) in a two-level 800 square metre manufacturing space in the inner west suburb of Chippendale in 1997. Annointing himself head buyer from day one, he selected Erik Jorgensen, Republic of Fritz Hansen and Stelton as the store’s foundation brands. Clearly striking a chord with Sydneysiders excited by the prospect of being exposed to a new breed of furniture designers, the business grew organically opening in Melbourne in 1999, Brisbane in 2005 and making its way across the Tasman to Auckland four short years later. In receipt of regular stock consignments, Munao remains in charge of the bulk of the buying for the stores with input from his various showroom managers. Each year he takes a small team to Italy to attend the Milan Design Week – considered the biggest event on the global design calendar – where seasonal trends are observed and the majority of the year’s purchasing decisions are made. “The bulk of our designs are sourced from Denmark and Italy – two countries that both have strong design culture and have produced some of the world’s best designs. A lot of the most iconic Italian and French design that today are carried by brands like Cassina, were designed in the 1920s and 1930s such as LC collection by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret,” he says. “After that, the 1950s and 1960s were a very prolific time for design

in Denmark with designers such as Hans J Wegner, Poul Kjaerholm and Arne Jacobsen leading the charge. The beauty of all these designs is that a LC4 chaise longue from 1928, Wishbone chair from 1949 and the Swan chair from 1955 are still as relevant and contemporary today as the time they were designed. All these designs have stood the test of time, and that’s what makes them true design icons.” Authenticity is the trait that binds each member of the Cult family, yet despite this, one of the secrets to the Cult phenomenon is that each brand has its own unique personality and quality. "While Carl Hansen & Son and PP Mobler are the hallmarks for modern Danish timber furniture, brands such as Magis continuously push the boundaries of innovation and technology by working with plastic, steel, iron or even a combination of materials", he says. Owing to the diversity of its offering, Cult’s price points are equally varied where the design conscious can pick up a HAY Clip Clip for around $14 to a Cappellini Progetti Compiuti chest of drawers that retails for $72,900. Munao says the industry has changed significantly since he started out – most notably in the merging of commercial and residential furniture. Now, more than ever, there is demand for break-out, multi-functional furniture, furniture to suit smaller spaces as well as sustainable furniture. Un i que Luxur y

But great design is “not about design for disassembly or out of recycling materials”, he has been quoted as saying. “It’s about design for longevity – to transcend the seasons and the trends.”

the industry that has already offered him so much, Cult is actively involved in discovering and mentoring emerging Australian and New Zealand design talent.

Being prepared to go it alone has also proved something of a pitfall to all Australian retailers looking to claim a stake in the fiercely competitive furniture market, with the growing creep of replicas flooding the market.

It launched its unique design program – Our Design Journey – in 2004, which gives designers throughout Australia and New Zealand the opportunity to have their designs produced. While the UK recently enforced penalties of up to £50,000 and 10 years jail for anyone selling fake furniture, no such laws exist in Australia. It is generally accepted that Australia lags behind in legislating this area as manufacturers of ‘fakes’ are allowed to market their design copies here as long as they are named ‘replica’. It is a subject that gets Munao hot under the collar, so much so that, aside from being a regular lobbyist, he is also the founding partner of the Authentic Design Alliance and a regular contributor to panel discussions seeking to better educate the market. Speaking to leading industry website, The Future of Space in 2014, Munao claimed that it took courage and investment for designers and manufacturers of original designs to bring products to market; for as many products that are successful there are products that do not succeed. “Authentic, original design is important in many ways. Most original and authentic pieces have a greater life span than ‘replica furniture’, which is a more long term, sustainable option for our environment. Authenticity rewards the original designer with income through the sales of the product they designed and it encourages all designers to innovate. “To me it seems criminal that one can sit on the fence and wait for an original to sell and then copy it; essentially this is theft of intellectual property,” he told the site. Partly to meet the insatiable demand for innovation within the sector and partly because Munao feels compelled to give back to

Munao has further diversified the business over the past two to three years, starting up his own Cult brand, designed and manufactured in Australia but which will soon be launched in South East Asia, as well as launching an Australian-made AGxCult collection, designed by local talent Adam Goodrum, that Cult intends debuting internationally. In addition, Munao also runs a program, dubbed Cultivated, which is a unique product stewardship program providing refurbishment and buy-back options of its furniture to clients. Yet, despite the uncertainty of the global marketplace and turmoil within the retail sector, Munao believes there is still much to be achieved by the brands for which he is caretaker. Late last year, he opened the first mono-branded HAY shop in Sydney’s Surry Hills - a fitting tribute given he was the first to commit distributing the brand outside of Europe. It was also the realisation of a dream that Munao had when the brand was first launched in 2002. Plans are also in the pipeline to celebrate Cult’s 20-year anniversary by renovating its Chippendale headquarters and transforming it into an event-space for functions, photo shoots and exhibitions. “I am proud of where we are today. Looking back over the last 20 years, it’s been such an exciting journey, yet I still believe that Cult has so much more potential to grow as a business.”

On August 7th, Lamborghini Sydney invited a select few to take part in the spectacular launch of the special and highly limited edition, Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 Avio. One of only 250 created worldwide. The special guests were treated to a drive day, followed by the launch which, from all reports, is something they won’t forget. Sixty invited guests met at the Lamborghini Sydney showroom in Leichhardt (563 Parramatta Road) for light refreshments before departing on the day’s adventures. The group turned heads as they convoyed south through the Royal National Park in some of the most luxurious and powerful vehicles available. The first stop was at Austinmer beach, where the 30-plus fleet of supercars pulled over for a light snack. From there, the convoy met up with the balance of the invited guests at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Nowra. The sight of over 50 supercars in the carpark was truly spectacular. Over a delicious lunch, the guests were treated to a presentation by the engaging guest speaker, Commodore Vincenzo E.B Di Pietro AM, CSC, RANR, who shared his knowledge and experience as Commander of the Royal Australian Fleet Air Arm. The event came to a close with what everyone had been waiting for - the unveiling of the special edition Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 Avio. Inspired by the history of "edge of the envelope" aeronautical engineering, this car expresses style, menace and purpose from every aspect of its form, leaving the guests in awe of its specification and exclusivity. Lamborghini Sydney would like to thank all who were involved in the launch of the special edition Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 Avio, with particular thanks to the staff of the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Nowra, who provided a private tour of the aircraft on display. 122

HAUTE HOROLOGY For more than a centur y, Rolex has been the ultimate wearable status symbol of achievement and affluence. How has it endured to still hold so much appeal to so many?

W

hen New Zealand recruitment specialist Gudrun Kendall first learned her male partner was the likely recipient of a vintage Rolex watch, she knew she’d have to do some fast-talking.

Having been given a Yachtmaster II as a gift from a girlfriend, he too reserves wearing it for only the most glamorous of occasions, storing it on a purpose-built watch shelf in his wardrobe when not in use.

Selling the watch’s owner on the fact the slim design of the 80-yearold Oyster Speedking Precision was more suited to a female wrist than a male, she managed to convince her common law father-inlaw that it should be her – and not his son – who deserved to be the watch’s rightful owner.

When he does put it on for public display, Curnow says the watch’s presence always makes him feel “pretty special”.

That was three years ago and, while the timepiece is brought out on special occasions such as award events or fancy dinners, its hefty sentimental value means more often than not, it spends its time locked away from prying fingers in Kendall’s jewellery box. But like thousands of others fortunate enough to own one of the prestige timepieces, Kendall says even the thought of it is reason to smile. “It feels very premium and quite flash. It’s a bit like I’m in a secret exclusive club.” Sydney businessman Duncan Curnow is another who considers himself lucky to be among the elite group of Rolex owners.

“I always get lots of comments on it.” Undoubtedly Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf had little inkling of just how revered his products would become upon entering the watchmaking game in 1905. German-born Wilsdorf was only 24 when he started a business in London that specialised in the distribution of timepieces. Convinced that the inconsistency displayed by early pocket watches could be made more reliable and the bulky aesthetic design more pleasing, he paired with a Swiss watch-making company in Bienne to equip his wrist watches with small precise movements to improve their accuracy. Eager for his watches to be branded with a name that was “short, easy to say in any language and looked good on watch movements and dials”, Wilsdorf was alleged to have spent considerable time

searching for a suitable moniker for his business before settling on the famous five letter R-word. “I tried combining the letters of the alphabet in every possible way. This gave me some hundred names, but none of them felt quite right. One morning, while riding on the upper deck of a horse-drawn omnibus along Cheapside in the City of London, a genie whispered ‘Rolex’ in my ear,” Wilsdorf reportedly said. It was only five years later when Wilsdorf’s relentless quest for chronometric precision finally led to success, after a Rolex watch became the first in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision as granted by Bienne’s Official Watch Rating Centre. Rolex will later also be credited with producing the first ladies chronometer certified watch. As a result of that early attention to detail, from that point on every watch manufactured by the company would be chronometer-certified. Rolex today remains a privately owned company and is considered one of the most valuable brands in the world. It produces around 2,000 watches daily. It is believed the privately run entity has revenues in the billions of dollars. Forbes ranked it No.64 on its 2016 list of the world's most powerful global brands with estimated 2012 revenues of US$7.7 billion thanks, in part, to the fact Rolex timepieces are timeless, increasing their value as time goes by. While entry-level prices for a Rolex Explorer wristwatch in Australia start at around $8,000, according to American news company CNBC, the most expensive Rolex ever sold was a rare 1949 Oyster Perpetual model with a cloisonné enamel dial that sold at auction in 2014 for $1.6 million. Rolexes which have passed through the hands of celebrities dominate the list of the most expensive pieces with a 1971 Rolex Daytona watch owned by singer Eric Clapton selling for $505,000 and a 1973 Rolex 5513 watch worn by actor Roger Moore, in his role as James Bond selling for $662,000.

But it’s the method in which its products are made which has helped the heritage brand dominate the world of prestigious luxury watch-makers. Having shifted its manufacturing base to Switzerland in 1919 to avoid wartime taxes levied on luxury goods, Rolex watches today are brought to life by a team of more than 6,000 employees across the brand’s four sites in Geneva – which also doubles as its world headquarters - Plan-le-Ouates, Bienne and Chêne-Bourg. Geneva is home to management, research and development, design, communication activities, sales and after-sales service. It is also where the final assembly of the components, delivered by the three other sites, and final quality control of the finished watches take place. The Plan-les-Ouates site, its largest, brings together all the development and production activities for watch cases and bracelets, from the casting of the gold and forming of the raw materials to the machining and polishing of finished components. The Bienne site is the main production facility for the movements of Rolex watches. The Chêne-Bourg site houses the development and manufacture of the dials, as well as the gemmology and gem-setting activities. It may sound like poor time-keeping to the uneducated but Rolex once claimed that it takes around 12 months to make each product in its range. True or not, it is not entirely outside the realms of possibility. This is largely because almost all components are made in-house. Critical to this process is the fact that in 2003, Rolex became the only watch manufacturer in the world to use the 904L steel – a unique type of stainless steel, more expensive to purchase and more complicated to machine but equally more rust and corrosion resistant than the 316L version favoured by competitors. All the essential components of its watches, from the casting of the gold alloys to the machining, crafting, assembly and finishing of the movement, case, dial and bracelet is hand assembled and tested. The movements are sent to the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute for chronometer certification and re-tested for accuracy after they are cased for several days while simulating wear before they are sent out to retailers. To ensure its products endure, the company’s manufacturing headquarters boast their own science lab with a stress test room where watch movements, bracelets, and cases undergo simulated wear and abuse on custom-made machines and robots. Rolex watches have to pass more than 20 different drop tests before their launch, including surviving shock-testing equipment that submits the watch to an impact equivalent to 5,000 G. Its Deepsea divers' watch is tested in a specially designed highperformance tank and taken to the extreme depth of 3,900 metres while its new generation Oysterlock, fitted on Professional Rolex models, underwent 26 different types of drop tests during its development. It was also immersed in tanks of chlorine and salt water with added sand, where it was opened and closed tens of thousands of times to ensure it remained fully functional. Meanwhile, every Rolex Oyster watch is immersed in water and subjected to a pressure 10 percent greater than that found at the depth to which it is guaranteed – 25 percent more in the case of divers’ watches. The company also boasts its own foundry where it creates the 18 ct gold alloys used for its watches – yellow gold, white gold and Everose gold – an exclusive pink gold alloy developed by Rolex. In addition, Rolex has it owns gemological department whose sole focus it is to purchase, test, arrange and handset diamonds and other precious stones to a range of Rolex models. Traditional jewellers are brought in to create custom settings for stones in the brand’s most exclusive watches, while only diamonds graded an F in clarity and D-G in colour are accepted for use. Its exacting standards means that in the years they have been testing

diamonds only two in 20 million have been found not to be authentic. In its widely acclaimed pursuit of innovation, Rolex has registered more than 400 patents since its inception and has been widely credited for producing the first waterproof watch, the first antimagnetic watch and the first watch with a rotating bezel. Yet, unlike many of its fellow watchmakers, it has only a limited number of models – including Submariner, Explorer, Daytona, Date Just and Yacht Master – which are updated and then re-released. In staying true to its popular taglines “It doesn’t just tell time, it tells history” and “a crown for every achievement” much of Rolex’s marketing has been based around Wilsdorf’s vision to have the brand align itself with the world’s elite sports events, sports people and adventurers. Evidence of this approach can be traced back to 1927 when, just a year after launching the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, Wilsdorf equipped English swimmer Mercedes Gleitze with the innovative watch when she swam the English channel. Today, the tie-ins are stronger than ever with Rolex lending its support to the sports of golf, equestrian, yachting and tennis as well as the sports’ leading personalities including golfing superstars, Tiger Woods and Lydia Ko, Tennis ace Roger Federer and top tier equestrians Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Zara Phillips. It is also a great supporter of the arts, having formed an alliance that dates back to the 1970's with New Zealand soprano, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and others such as Spanish tenor, Plácido Domingo, Chinese pianist, Yuja Wang, and Canadian jazz singers, Diana Krall and Michael Bublé. The company says sponsorship is not only a vital part of the brand’s DNA, but also a “perfect reflection” of the company’s inherent values and ethos “from heritage, reliability and trust to excellence, passion and precision”. “Rolex is at one with the skill, timing, endurance and the perpetual quest for perfection that characterise ground-breaking exploration, the most prestigious sporting achievement and the greatest artistic performances around the world.” Un i que Luxur y

M

iuccia Prada’s take on fall/winter 2016 could almost be a reflection of the woman herself – a survivor, willful, battle hardened and with a fierce determination to complete the journey ahead in her own sui generis style. Staged in a multi-level set designed as a square for ceremony or as Prada herself put it “a gathering of the rich, the poor”, the collection was an excursion through history. Italian fashion’s leading lady presented a menswear collection that saw models take to the runway clad in clothes that appeared torn, battered and wrenched away from the body.

Bag - $3,830

Decked out in sailor hats and coats with wide lapels, there were several references to the past with worn and aged fabrics, battered canvas twills and shirting where buttons were mismatched. Key Trick - $710

Shoes - $1,650

Once again, Prada drew on the talents of French artist Christophe Chemin who was brought in as a collaborator, with his prints of mythical beasts and medieval fighting appearing splashed across a number of oversized dress shirts with elongated cuffs. The colour palette largely consisting of blacks, greys and beige combined with suit jackets, double-breasted overcoats and billowing ankle-length pants providing a nostalgic nod to the time when travellers dressed up when traversing the globe.

fter three years Christopher Bailey’s incredible run as Burberry’s dual chief executive officer and chief creative officer is set to come to an end. From 2017, Bailey will cede control of the company’s day-to-day management as part of a boardroom overhaul where he will be replaced by luxury goods veteran, Marco Gobbetti, of the French brand, Céline. Instead Bailey will take on the new title of president of the UK fashion house and will retain his role as chief creative officer. Prior to joining Céline, 57-year-old Gobbetti was CEO of Moschino 162

arriving there in 1993. He joined LVMH’s Givenchy as CEO in 2004. On top of a generous seven figure salary and share options, Gobbetti’s generous remuneration package includes a £80,000 allowance for clothing, car and travel. Burberry chairman, Sir John Peace, said Gobbetti had “an outstanding” track record of delivering growth in the luxury industry, and his vision for the sector was also impressive. The news comes not long after Bailey detailed plans to save £100 million (A$175.1 million) a year off Burberry’s annual costs by 2019 owing to volatility in the luxury sector. It is believed the savings will be made via a reduction in the number of items the 160-year-old fashion house sells as well as staffing and operational changes.

t could be argued that fashion designers exist solely so we laymen and women can truly understand how devastatingly uncreative we are when it comes to cohesion in putting together looks that accurately reflect the people we are. But where we struggle, artists such as Dior’s Kris Van Assche appear, seemingly, to be able to do it in their sleep.

Shopper in black quilted and embroidered nylon - $2,350

Embroidered leather wristband, palladium-finish metal buckles - $890

In speaking about this, his winter 2016/17 collection, Van Assche noted: “The idea of ‘the hybrid’ is intrinsic to the collection. Today, people don’t just fit in the box, they fit into many. And all at once.” And in one simple sentence he has managed to sum up the reason for our struggle. So with this in mind he set about introducing us to a collection that featured everything from extra long biker jackets, calfskin oversized pleated trousers and top hats, to peaked beanies, ribbon neckties and black cotton skinny fit jeans, hand-painted with "Untitled 1". His aesthetic relied heavily on a striking combination of red and black. It was reflected on the stage in neon lit skate ramps and half pipes and it was there in the clothes where red and white cut-yarn check was reinterpreted in look after look.

Lace-up boot in black calfskin with woven red and black micro-check laces, palladium finish buckle, black rubber sole - $1,750

High-top sneaker in black leather and technical fabric, white rubber sole - $980

The suit jacket, one of the Dior Homme staples, was reinvented this season with lines of fraying embroidery but true to its signature remained clean, sharp and tailored. Un i que Luxur y

culpture is key for the Boss design team this season, bringing a new expression of classic elegance to its much-anticipated spring/summer 2016 offering. In what the German fashion house has hailed as a “redefining of luxury, its range this season boasts a range of reworked pieces with multifunctional looks defined by - as can typically be expected of the global designer label - ultra-precise cuts.

cropped above the ankle and sneakers to make the modern man stand out from his peers. And still the surprises in both form and function keep arriving.

With a clear focus on avant-garde shapes and materials, men dressing for the beach or the boardroom will find much to indulge in as Boss breathes new life into wardrobe staples.

Classic parkas are offered in mint green or poppy red and pants arrive equipped with an elastic waistband and short leg zippers at the legs. Foldable raincoats are sure to command attention, as too will field down jackets and denim with a decent stretch. Performance-wear ideas are explored via taped seams and pockets, and laser-cut details.

A seemingly seamless neoprene coat is styled with a grey business suit and paired with double-strap monk shoes. A traditional navy blue trench coat has been given a make over and is worn with pants

Fabrications are also high end with dyed silks, cashmere blends, and textiles with a soft sheen finish reinforce the core notion of the collection: luminous exposure.

historique The 10th Grand Prix Monaco Historique

Un i que Luxur y

187

T

he Monaco Grand Prix was first run in 1929, around the same street circuit that is still used to this very day. Some wonderful and legendary cars and drivers from the annals of motor racing history have competed at one of the spiritual homes of motor sport. Loius Chiron, after whom part of the circuit is now named, finished fourth in 1933 in his Alfa Romeo 8C Monza; Stirling Moss, who was in attendance in the Principality 60 years on, was the winner in 1956 in his Maserati 250F, whilst the great Argentine, Juan-Manuel Fangio, also driving a 250F, won the following year ahead of Tony Brooks in his Vanwall VW7; 1958 saw Maurice Trintignant win in the Cooper T45; Australian Jack Brabham won in 1961 in a Cooper T55, but such is the nature of both sport and life that the next year, when driving a Lotus 24, he did not finish. Brabham abandoned again in 1964 driving his own car the Brabham BT7. This was the year that Jim Clark finished fourth in a Lotus 25; 1970 was a win for Lotus with Jochen Rindt leading the others home in the Gold Leaf Lotus 49; in 1972 it was the turn of John Pierre Beltoise to be the victor in the Marlboro BRM P160; five years later in 1977 Niki Lauda driving a Ferrari 312 T2 came second whilst 1979 saw Patrick Depailler fifth in the Ligier JS11 with Carlos Reutemann making the podium in third place in his Lotus 79. Great names, great cars, great competition at this, perhaps the most mythical (who could ever forget Alberto Ascari in 1955 crashing onto the harbour waters, or indeed Australian Paul Hawkins ten years on becoming only the second person ever to do

188

w w w.uni quees t a te s. co m. a u

so) and extraordinary event on the Grand Prix calendar. Of course, the Formula 1 GP still takes place here each year and this year the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes, the Ferrari pilots Kimi Raikonnen and Sebastian Vettel and the young pretender to the throne, Max Verstappen, will all be trying their darndest to win a race that possibly means more than any of the others in the sport. Today, the Monaco GP has lost none of its glitz and glamour, but maybe it has lost a little of the charm of years gone by. Perhaps it is still possible to turn back the clock though to those days when the heroes of the sport are remembered through black and white images or early fading colour photography - a time when both the imagery and the vehicles were pre-digital. The Grand Prix Monaco Historique was first run in 1997 and, from the year 2000 on, has been held every two years with it recording its tenth edition in 2016. Run over three days in May, it is a marvellous journey of the history of the racing car in Monaco. This year, there were seven different classes for the passionate pilots to endeavour to emulate their heroes. The first category being for pre-war Grand Prix cars. Featuring a variety of Bugattis, Aston Martins, an MG K3 Magnette, Maserati 6CM, a unique Riley Dobbs, Mercedes-Benz SSK and an Alfa Romeo 1750SS Zagato – this group did not actually race but ran a series of parade laps to venerate the early pioneers of racing in Monaco such as Chrion, Tazio Nuvolari, Achille Varzi and Rodolf Carraciola.

Series B, for pre-1961 front engined F1 Grand Prix and Formula 2 cars, was an evocation of the single-seat racers that ran at Monaco between 1948 and 1960 such as the Cooper Bristol, and the Maserati 250F which had taken the honours in 1956 and 1957 with Moss and Fangio behind the wheel. Series C was for front engined sports racing cars which competed at Monaco between 1952 and 1955. A large field was made up amongst others of Allards, Frazer Nash, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Maserati and a handful of wonderful C-Type Jaguars. In 1959 the Monaco GP was won by a Formula Junior Stanguellini. The Formula Junior cars, featuring the engine at the front and drum brakes, in group D were all built between 1958 and 1960. The 49 entires in this very competitive group featured a wide variety of marques including, of course, Stanguellini, but also three lovely Osca Tipo J. Another very competitive class was that of the 1500cc F1 Grand Prix cars from 1961 to 1965 inclusive. This was the formula that Graham Hill, driving for BRM, won the Monaco GP in three successive years in 1963, ’64, ’65 - an amazing feat of skill and consistency. The beautiful little open-wheelers in Series E really did look the part here and took me back to my very early memories of motor racing. Groups F (F1 Grand Prix cars from 1966 to 1972 inclusive) and G (Formula 1 cars from 1973 to 1976 inclusive) meanwhile, provided incredibly serious and motivated racing. Whilst there had been plenty of British victories earlier, it was home town hero Alessandro Caffi, in the 1976 Ensign N176, who stood atop the podium in the

last race of an amazing weekend. Caffi looked happier winning this trophy than he perhaps did in any of the 56 World Championship F1 GP he competed in between 1986 and 1991. It was serious but friendly rivalry all the way through the different classes with other famous drivers taking part such as Emmanuele Pirro, winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2000/01/02/03/06, whilst Adrian Newey, engineer of Red Bull and Williams Renault fame, was pushing the beautiful Gold Leaf Lotus 49, driven in period by Jim Clark and Graham Hill, very hard. To my mind though, the 10th Monaco Historic Grand Prix was not about winners and losers. It is about the atmosphere and ambience, the passion and vibrancy, the sound and the legends rather than the palmarès and honour of standing on the podium. It may sound like a primary school cliché, but every one who took part was a winner on the day. And if you wanted a little quiet time away from the track, there was plenty else to do with three major classic car auctions taking place over the weekend and a fabulous Historic Racing Boat exhibition in the Riva Tunnel right by the paddock, featuring some amazing craft such Rafale V, which used to ply the waters of this famous harbour back in the 1930's. The abiding memory though is of the cars (many of them with amazing provenance) and their drivers screaming through the Chicane, past Tabac and Chiron and Rascasse, transporting us back to those halcyon days of races gone by. Roll on 2018!

Even though it’s located right in the village with its quaint street frontage and beautiful country garden, it is very much rooted in the picturesque rural landscape viewed from the rear of the property.
