P

assion persuaded Thomas Hamel to leave his home in the US in favour of Sydney and love has compelled him to stay here.

Yet not even Thomas, who is from French and Irish extraction, could have foreseen the personal and professional fulfilment the ensuing journey would deliver him.

Growing up in southern Virginia in America’s deep south Thomas found himself surrounded by colonial architecture. Something of an introvert as a child, he soon discovered that designing miniature homes afforded him a confidence he struggled to locate elsewhere.

He created his first residence aged just 10 when he turned a tiny bookcase into a doll’s house by removing the doors and carefully wallpapering each division. Filling it with his collection of miniature furniture, he included a study with a Tiffany desk lamp constructed from a ping pong ball.

Today, aged 53, Thomas is an award-winning international designer

and principal of one of the largest interior design practices in the country with more than 30 staff operating out of his inner-city Sydney headquarters.

The interior designer of choice for a host of prominent Australians, including actor and film producer Russell Crowe and former NSW premier Neville Wran, his eponymous design firm’s handprint can be sighted on luxurious homes all around the country, as well as throughout holiday homes in locales as diverse as France, London, Florida, Hawaii and Bermuda.

Finding his work regularly featured in many of the world’s foremost interior design magazines, in 2010 he published his acclaimed book, Residence, which showcases many of his favourite residential projects from around the world.

In 2014, he teamed up with Dylan Farrell to commission and curate the Hamel + Farrell Collection, a furniture offering developed in collaboration with international brand Jean de Merry.

Thomas was barely out of his teens when, as an “impressionable youth” in the 1980s, he turned his back on the Colonial Williamsberg and restored period homes of his beloved Virginia to study at New York’s famed Fashion Institute of Technology. Earning himself an associate’s degree, he then went on to the American College in London to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design before returning to New York City to begin his working career.

His first job was with Bebe Winkler, where at the tender age of just 23, he was a partner in a small design firm with his own secretary.

It was there he could put his learnings into practice, while also being exposed to the many challenges involved in running a burgeoning business.

He could scarcely believe his luck after landing a “plum job” at the revered design firm of Parish-Hadley and Associates shortly after – a role which was to have a deep and profound impact on his own design aesthetic.

“At this point they were at the pinnacle of their game and considered the most celebrated firm in the US. This was an education unto itself, more valuable than anything I learned in college. Under the tutelage of Albert Hadley and Mrs Henry ‘Sister’ Parish I received the ultimate training in the art of living and how to achieve appropriate interiors.

This was a defining experience for me and I now try to pass this invaluable understanding and these experiences on to my team.”

His position at Parish-Hadley was primarily to work on one large home which, at the time, was being created for Canadian clients in Bermuda. It was, he admits, every inch as glamorous as it sounds.

“Beautiful antiques, rugs and accessories were being sourced from all over the world and I was tasked with combing auction catalogues from Sotheby's and Christies to find the perfect pieces. It was lovely to also be included in elaborate garden designs that were being detailed for the estate. This broadened my understanding of the importance of garden and interior design together.”

Thomas was in Paris shopping for furnishings with a Californian client when he first met, and later fell in love with, Sydney-based antiques dealer Martyn Cook.

He came to Sydney to be with Martyn, setting up his own design firm at around the same time. While the personal relationship would not last, the professional one would endure and the design firm of Thomas Hamel & Associates has never looked back.

While there are a multitude of differences between The US and Australia, each has their own unique properties when it comes to interior design, he says.

“The US is such a treasure trove of antiques, decorative objects,

fabrics and all things design. There are so many options and they are all accessible to everyone. I always remind friends of the enormous population differences though, I feel we have come a long way in Australia over my 20-something years here. The market is vibrant and varied in all aspects. And I must say, Australian publications of interior design are world-class.”

Initially finding all his clients were Sydney-based, with Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull among them, it wasn’t until Thomas began receiving hearty praise for his first project in Victoria, that he found himself “being passed around” between clients’ friends and relatives in places further afield.

Together with partner George Massar – the owner of trade furniture and fabric showrooms Kneedler Fauchere and Gregorius Pineo in the US – Thomas spends almost as much time abroad as he does at his adopted home.

This has resulted in an international, sophisticated design style that is truly timeless with “cross pollination” and “intelligent editing” the hallmarks of his unique style.

Thomas cites travel as his number one inspiration but says he is “constantly reading, looking and shopping” to keep on top of current design trends, with social media sites such as Instagram and Pinterest proving a powerful lure.

One of the best things about his job is having the opportunity to travel with clients on shopping trips to LA, London, New York, or

even Melbourne to select special pieces for their home, he says.

“These adventures lead to each piece having a 'story to tell'.

I usually blend a few pieces from many various cultures into a room. A bit of tribal art, a piece from the Orient, these all add personality and intrigue into a room. Woven baskets and interesting shells are also personal favourites. However, a very important note is that it is always important to carefully edit an interior. All projects are different and while it is nice to have a big budget, we love the challenge of creating beauty within parameters. An important part of a great project is the attention and desire to have wonderful art... we try to develop clients interest in this and a significant portion of a budget needs to be allowed for this aspect of the project. Anything is possible with creativity and a good eye.”

Thomas believes the definition of luxury is being able to spend time at home, and taking the time to enjoy your surroundings.

This perhaps goes some of the way to explaining why he considers designing his own abodes in Sydney as among the most significant projects he has been involved with.

“There is nothing more special than being surrounded by lovely people and having beautiful things such as books, art and photos to give you a chance to reflect upon the memories and achievements of a lifetime. It is important to feel comfortable and happy in your own space - it is vital to have a sanctuary.”

He did such an impressive job on his first “true home”, an apartment in Broughton House in Sydney’s CBD, that it has been photographed, Instagrammed and published in Vogue Living, Belle, GQ and US luxury design publication Veranda, becoming something of a calling card for Thomas Hamel & Associates in the process.

That aside, Thomas says that when it comes to great interiors he is sometimes guilty of being a little obsessive compulsive.

A more recent move with George to another spectacular apartment on the waterfront has again been shot by Belle and provided yet another showcase for his work.

While he feels it is important to live the life of a perfectionist, he also believes expectations must be managed otherwise “no one enjoys anything”.

“One thing I cannot settle for though is bad lighting. A person must look attractive. A room lit only with downlights is a disaster to me... the shadows cast upon people's faces is so unattractive.”

or his last show with Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci goes out with all toy guns blazing.

Riccardo Tisci used Western American references from childhood memories to build a positive Givenchy collection made of signature house codes such as horizontal stripes, stars, embroidered check patterns and graphic colourful prints.

Tisci described the collection as “Seeing Western America with the eyes of a child”.

Indeed, there were Americana motifs, classic checks and totem poles ¬- all overblown through Tisci’s boyhood eyes.

As an impoverished Southern Italian boy surrounded by Catholic bling and eight sisters, everything from those cowboy movies he grew up on must have seen oversized and hyper-masculine.

Hence, the giant buttons and toggles that adorned coats and jackets, and the colourful graphic faces covering jumpers for a pyjama party vibe.

The key take-home piece was certainly mature though - a beautiful Civil War era take on the duffle coat, cut in shearling, with sweeping collars and multicolored toggles.

There was still plenty of black leather and signature sports silhouetted skirts in this collection though.

In 2009, Tisci made his debut for the previously directionless and ailing Givenchy menswear label, setting the runway show to a symphonic rendition of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” and a line-up full of black leather trim and sports-inspired silhouettes, like the fashion world had never seen.

So, there is circularity in this very epic Americana wild west collection. Tisci has saved Givenchy from financial ruin, giving it the street and celebrity cred necessitated by the era of Instagram.

Neither a cowboy or an indian, Tisci has definitely played ‘good guy’ for the label and Givenchy devotees will miss him dearly.

Birthed from the same stable as exclusive Melbourne eateries Chin Chin, Gogo Bar, Baby, Kong and Hawker Hill, Kisumé is a contemporary Japanese restaurant and the latest venture from renown Victorian restaurateur Chris Lucas and his independent hospitality group.

Roughly translated, Kisumé (pronounced kiss-oo-meh), translates to “pure obsession with beauty”, an apt name for a space that has been cleverly designed to stimulate the senses.

Touted as a place where the traditionalist and modernist meet, Lucas himself describes Kisumé as a place that fuses outstanding talent and superior service with “next level” food and a design of both Japanese and Australian origin.

The minimalist interiors, constructed largely of concrete and timber flooring, matte brass, grey leather and velvet were brought to life by renowned Melbourne architects Wood Marsh and marked the firm’s first restaurant project in two decades. Meanwhile, designer Fabio Ongarato has taken charge of curating the space with work

by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki and Australia’s Polly Borland adorning the walls.

Australian fashion designers Alex and Georgie Cleary, of Alpha60, pieced together the uniforms inspired by Japanese culture and design.

Nestled in the heart of Melbourne, the restaurant itself occupies 620 square metres and operates across three separate levels.

“It's not hard to be captivated by the energy of Flinders Lane. It is arguably Australia’s foodie epicentre. Being surrounded by other great restaurants is exciting for us, it draws people to the precinct.

The site itself has these incredible original concrete beams that run across the roof of each floor. This created a really raw element to the space and presented a canvas we were really excited to work with,” says Lucas.

The basement houses the restaurant itself and kitchen number one. At ground level is the sushi and sashimi room, bamboo bar and kitchen number two. On the first floor resides the restaurant’s crowning glory - Kuro Kisumé – the home of two private dining spaces, the Chamblis Bar and a unique omakase-style bespoke dining experience that seats only 12 and goes by the name of The Table. And, you guessed it, yet another kitchen.

In the restaurant’s main dining area, guests are offered two food menus, featuring a selection of raw and hot dishes including Tamago Mushi with Egg Custard, Prawn, Shiitake Mushroom, Foie Gras and Sukiyaki Foam and Chilled Hiyashi Lime Soba Noodles in Bonito Broth and Fresh Lime.

The restaurant’s dedicated sushi bar also offers innovative dishes where diners can select from assorted and speciality rolls and sashimi including Alaskan King Crab with Spring Onion, Flying Fish Row and Soy Paper.

The Table, which launched mid-August, sees the executive head chef, head chef and sommelier work hand-in-hand to provide a personalised journey built around a modern interpretation of the traditional kaiseki philosophy.

An ancient tradition whose origins can be traced back to the historic town of Kyoto, kaiseki is a seasonal journey of dishes created to represent the land and sea of the chef’s environment.

It includes the traditional cooking methods of grilling, steaming, frying and soups.

Once the 12 guests are seated at the bespoke table - constructed from solid bamboo and brass - they can expect a menu featuring only locally-sourced foods with the exception of caviar which is not produced in Australia.

Hero dishes include Toro Shavings, Mud Crab with Uni and Caviar, and ‘Syphon’ Soup with Abalone, Fish, Tofu, Basil Seed and Lime.

While the menu will change every few days, guests can expect to pay around $175 per head for the 15 courses, plus drinks.

Growing up in Seoul, Moon says he was lucky to be surrounded by a great food culture.

The Chablis Bar, Australia’s first, offers up to 80 Chablis by the bottle and has a regularly changing selection by the glass. With the wine list hand-selected to complement the delicacy of the food, Kisumé will also offer single vineyard tap wines made by some of Australia’s best winemakers.

“My mother loved to cook and made the best traditional Korean food (no bias), she really inspired me to follow this path. As I started to immerse myself in food, I read an article in the newspaper about a Japanese chef which made me realise the exact type of cuisine I wanted to cook. I was fascinated by the techniques and rich history of Japanese cooking and food. I went and found that chef I read about, he went on to be my teacher and my mentor to this day.”

Of The Table, Lucas says: “It’s pure theatre and Chef Moon the master”.

Chef Moon is supported in the kitchen by Kitak Lee (of Sydney’s Momofuku Seibo and Cho Cho San fame) and a team of more than 60 front-of-house and back-of-house staff.

Lucas says many of the staff are handpicked from overseas and the local staff go through many weeks of training whether on the floor or in the kitchen. Staff are the most important element of the business and where those from the group put most of their energy, he says.

“The offering at Kisumé is highly specialised and requires rare skill sets. To be able to execute this we had to bring in international talent to complement our Australian talent. It was challenging to find the right individuals, but we have managed to create an incredible team.”

Among these are a formidable wine team led by pre-eminent wine expert Philip Rich and group sommelier Jonathan Ross, formerly of Eleven Madison Park.

While guests are given the option to choose from a wine or sake pairing, an a la carte wine list or the wine wall, a fourth option comes in the form of a unique gin exclusive to the restaurant.

A collaboration between Four Pillars Gin distillery and the Kisumé team, the gin came about after Chef Moon and chief distiller Cam Mackenzie spent a day distilling gin and experimenting with a raft of ingredients indigenous to Australia and Japan.

The result was a botanical mix featuring juniper, orris root, nashi pear, Fuji apple, yuzu, Tasmanian wasabi, strawberry gum, sesame seed, lemon myrtle, sansho pepper, ume and a dash of Australianmade sake that appears in three signature cocktails – the Kisumé G&T, Kuro martini and Bergamot sour.

Lucas says he feels a great sense of achievement in being the first to introduce the authentic kaiseki movement to Australia and credits his team with the positive feedback the project has garnered since first opening its doors in May. “The Table experience especially has been really rewarding to execute, we are able to show people what true kaiseki is about.

[But] I’m proud of how unique the restaurant is, not just within Melbourne, but really anywhere outside of Japan.

“It’s a world class product and it’s been exciting to see how Melburnians have taken to it.”

In recent years, the perception that surrounds hiring domestic staff has been changing in Australia. People are realising that you don’t need to be royalty or a billionaire to utilise the services of trained and experienced people to assist you in your home.

ay the word “Butler” and most people get images of a stiff gentlemen standing tall in a waistcoat in a castle in England.

Things have certainly changed these days. The fact is that these days it’s not so rare to find that savvy Australian households are employing fulltime or part-time professional domestic staff.

We asked Donna Morris, Director of Australian Elite Domestic Staff (AEDS) for her comments: “There are a large number of professional households where the home owner/s have fulltime careers and simply don’t have the time (or inclination) to stay at home or take on the sole responsibility for running the home, kids, pets, garden, cars, boat, renovations etc.”

It would seem that the job titles have changed too. These days the butler role has expanded. Executive households are enjoying the benefit of employing a professional person to run their home and the new “House Manager” role is all about being a Personal Assistant in the true sense of the word.

The House Manager role would usually include supervising cleaners and contractors to perform to the required standard and overseeing the quality of their work – so that the principals do not need to.

Additionally, they could arrange anything from the weekly shopping to the family holidays, from buying gifts to getting quotes, organising entertainment and events, whilst managing a budget and keeping a close eye on expenses.

So how did the AEDS agency start? Donna Morris and Hannah Moore also run a Superyacht Crew Placement Agency called Superyacht Crew International. “Some years ago, a number of clients (who own

yachts) kept asking if we could find them “Superyacht-standard” staff for their homes!” Morris reveals.

“The typical complaint would be ‘We just can’t find staff who ‘get it’ – who understand how we like to live and can anticipate what’s required.’ There were also comments along the lines of ‘regular cleaners just don’t see the detail or go into any depth’, or ‘we want continuity: someone who not only remembers the details but who goes above and beyond’. We could go on..” adds Morris.

AEDS Recruitment Manager, Hannah Moore explains, “We realised that our land-based clients also wanted a high calibre of staff to assist them in their everyday lives. When you travel you want to enjoy a high level of service. There is no reason why you can’t also enjoy high standards in your home on a daily basis! It’s a lifestyle decision.”

It may not be all that well-understood what ‘superyacht standard’ means. Morris gives this explanation “Superyacht crew work at the very top (elite) level of hospitality – regardless of their specific job onboard. Their entire focus is on anticipating the guests’ every need and meticulous planning and organisation to ensure that guest satisfaction is complete. The hours are long and there are few days off during the season. As long as guests are onboard crew are working to their highest endeavour. There is hospitality service 24/7, the chef and stewards will provide anything the guests’ desire – at any hour. The captain and his deck crew will provide a safe and interesting cruise which is completely bespoke. The yacht will be gleaming – inside and out. The sheets are crisp, the towels fluffy,

the flowers fresh, new magazines and newspapers each day, the fridges stocked with guests’ favourite beverages, the cushions fluffed and the crew will be smiling and attentive to every detail. It doesn’t get any better than that!”

Moore adds, “Of course we source elite domestic staff from all spheres, nationalities and locations – not only from the Superyacht industry”.

Let’s face it, these days we have high expectations of what we want to achieve and the majority of successful people running their own businesses or in high-powered corporate roles are rather time poor.

So things can start to unravel at home unless there’s a competent person taking up the reins.

It is a House Manager’s job to manage all your domestic affairs, so that you can be more productive in your professional sphere as well as have time for leisure with family and friends. Alongside their daily responsibilities a House Manager is required to be a jack of all trades when necessary: If the home needs renovations they will ensure that everything is done to your liking, the House Manager can step in, organise the tradesmen and quotes and act as your representative to give direction and keep an eye on progress. In this way, you the Principal can get on with your other commitments without being concerned about what’s happening at home.

So, if you are one who has a lot on your plate, both in your professional life and at home, it is within your reach to get professional assistance to help you keep it all under control.

It really depends on your budget, but the truth is that there are quite a number of families in Australia who have a number of

domestic staff: chef/cook, House Managers or Butlers, nanny, nurse-helper, housekeepers, gardener/groundsman, personal PA and Travelling Assistants.

Some families start with a Housekeeper a few days a week. AEDS are finding that often times this soon becomes a fulltime role when clients discover their capabilities beyond cleaning. Morris tells us that “AEDS are offering a full service to clients which includes draft Employment Contracts and comprehensive House Management manuals to ensure that every aspect of home (and estate) management is well-organised and fully taken care of. Additionally clients can benefit from the initial meeting and assessment of the home by AEDS recruiters so that they are able to find the best fit of candidate to client. Our recruiters have found that a personality fit is just as important as skills and job experience.” explains Moore .

Morris adds “As our services are confidential and discreet we are not able to publish a list of the clientele we serve. However, I can say that we are regularly approached for staff who can perform at the elite level they require. Since we are also Superyacht Crew recruiters we have unique access to the kind of staff that would suit these roles: who are mature and used to dealing with exclusive clientele on Superyachts. It’s a minor adjustment to bring their skills, organisation and understanding to a land-based role.”

So should you employ domestic staff? It comes down to two simple questions: Would being more organised at home add to your quality of life?

n terms of game-changing technological advancements, 1947 was a year more notable than most.

It was during this 12-month period that the sound barrier was first broken, Polaroid debuted the first instant camera, the transistor was invented and the first cellular mobile phone made an appearance.

It was also during this most significant of years that a modest Italian automaker, headed by Enzo Ferrari, rolled off production of the first sports car to bear his marque, the Ferrari 125 S. It was a bold move launching a two-seater prestige racer, powered by a 1.5L V12 engine, into the grand touring market at a time when much of Europe was still reeling from the ravages of the Second World War. Yet Enzo Ferrari had never been one to take the easy way out.

Born in 1898, Ferrari was inspired to race cars for a living at age 10 after his father took him to witness Felice Nazzaro's win at the 1908 Circuit di Bologna. Following the collapse of the family’s carpentry business some years later, Ferrari began searching for a job in the car industry. He eventually found work as a test-driver for Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali, a car manufacturer in Milan, where he was promoted to race car driver in 1919.

A year later he joined the racing department of Alfa Romeo as a driver. After winning the Circuito del Savio in 1923, Ferrari met the

parents of an Italian World War I fighter pilot who suggested he use the emblem that decorated their son's fuselage – a prancing horse - for good luck.

In 1929, he pulled together his own team of drivers and engineers for his Scuderia Ferrari (Ferrari Stable). Launched initially to buy, prepare and field racing cars for gentleman drivers, it soon became the official racing arm of the automaker.

Just a decade later Ferrari left Alfa Romeo and founded a new company ostensibly to produce machine tools and aircraft parts yet Ferrari couldn’t help himself and later reverted to form by building two examples of a race car.

Fast forward 70 years and Ferrari, together with its famous horse moniker, is now one of the most recognisable – not to mention innovative - brands in the world.

With a reported revenue of more than $3.1 billion in 2016, today Ferrari exports around 95 percent of its output from its manufacturing base in Maranello via 200 dealerships across 60 markets around the world.

In the decade between 2003 and 2012, it registered an impressive 150 patents. Meanwhile, its 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO model became the most expensive car in history, selling to an American communications magnate for a remarkable $US38.1 million in 2012.

At 44-years-old, Sydney-sider Herbert Appleroth is decades younger than the brand he has dedicated much of his working life to.

Anointed CEO of Ferrari Australasia upon its launch as a subsidiary in 2013, Appleroth is living the dream of high-end car enthusiasts the world over.

Having held senior positions with other automotive brands including Audi, Chrysler Jeep and Volkswagen, the former marketing co-ordinator was named the President and CEO of Ferrari Japan in 2010, having served Ferrari and Maserati in various roles since 1999. It was during his tenure as Representative Director of Ferrari Japan when he commanded the attention of Ferrari hierarchy by turning the Japanese market into one of Ferrari’s Top 3 worldwide.

Appleroth says, as with Enzo Ferrari himself, he can trace his own infatuation with fast cars to a very young age. He recalls being just seven or eight when he first heard the iconic Ferrari engine roar.

Determined then and there to own a Ferrari “one day”, his wish came true when Appleroth purchased his first Ferrari – a 355GTS – at the tender age of 26.

Directly responsible for five Australian and one New Zealand dealerships, it is under the Bond University graduate’s watchful eye that Australia is now regarded as one of the most matured markets in the Ferrari global network.

Appleroth says the growth of the luxury market – not just in cars but right across the segment - has been on an upward trend for many years in Australia. And, he asserts all the signs point to that growth continuing.

“I think in Australia our clients are becoming much more sophisticated in their approach to luxury. They are much more open to celebrating their successes than perhaps they were in the past. There are also greater levels of communication, engagement and particular focus on bespoke customisation. The art of luxury is giving clients a unique and

special experience, different to every other Ferrari client.”

Part of the reason Ferraris have always held such aspirational appeal is the fact they have always been produced in small numbers. In fact it wasn't until 1963 that a single model saw more than 500 cars produced.

The first Ferrari arrived into Australia in 1952 – just five years after the company was formed. This car remains in the country to this day. Currently there are six models sold in Australia: the California T (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $409,000), the 488 GTB (MSRP $469,988) and the 488 Spider (MSRP $526,888). The newest models in the range include the 812 Superfast (MSRP $610,000), a front mid-engine, rear wheel drive grand tourer and the GTC4Lusso T (MSRP $503,888) a twin-turbocharged V8, based on the power unit in the California T and the mid-engined 488 GTB Coupé and Spider. It’s the first V8-engined four-seater Ferrari.

In a nod to its past, the GTC4 Lusso (MSRP $578,000) has a 12 cylinder engine just like the brand’s first car into production.

Sleek and refined, it couples a four-wheel drive with a fourwheel steering system to deliver a sporty performance even in low grip conditions.

In addition, there are limited editions such as the F12tdf, LaFerrari Aperta – the spider version of the acclaimed LaFerrari supercar that are released from time to time while an as-yet-undisclosed model will also be added to the range at the end of 2017.

While reluctant to disclose numbers, Appleroth says since first opening as a subsidiary in 2013, the company has enjoyed successive years of record sales with his patch downunder now leading the western world in the number of “new to Ferrari” clients.

Australia also leads the western world in the number of female Ferrari ownership. “These figures are around 60 percent and 10 percent respectively – while the new to Ferrari figure is strong, we would like to see more women driving a Ferrari in Australia,” he says.

While there are numerous reasons for the popularity of the Ferrari product in Australia, Appleroth believes it is the brand’s unique approach to its clients as well as to its staff, which remains key.

“Enzo Ferrari founded the Ferrari marque with a goal to be the best of the best, and this is something that the team – both in Australia and right around the world – continues to be driven by, every day.

As an international team, we are continually striving for excellence in all that we do. That of course comes through the product itself, created by our designers and engineers, but it’s much more than that too.

Excellence in design, innovation, craftsmanship, technology, and client experiences – our ongoing commitment to all of these elements is what keeps Ferrari at the top.”

As a result, customer engagement is a core part of the Ferrari ethos. Each car ordered is personalised and built from the ground up, meaning it can often take anywhere from six to 18 months between placing an order and receiving the car. A fact that hasn’t seemed to deter would-be Australian buyers with Appleroth confirming the unprecedented pre-launch response to the 812 Superfast proved so popular it came in at 1.5 times the country’s full model-life allocation from the factory despite the fact that the first delivery of the car is not slated before 2018.

In addition, each customer is able to share in the production process with access to an online diary showing the progress of their car, renders, photos, even a perfectly scaled model car with exactly the same specs as their ordered vehicle.

Appleroth says clients ordering a new Ferrari via the authorised dealership network also receive complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first seven years of the vehicle’s life.

The unique program covers the scheduled maintenance labour along with the relative original spare parts, engine oil and brake fluid and also extends to any subsequent owner within the seven years.

Appleroth says Australian clients, as with most customers globally, spend an average of $65,000 customising their cars during the creation process.

There are several different levels of bespoke personalisation offered by Ferrari ranging from exterior colours to seat styling and stitching options or adaptive lighting systems. The second-tier system comes in the form of an Atelier service at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy which is booked through the dealer, and is essentially the same process as the standard personalisation but with greater exposure to finished products and the opportunity to work with an experienced personalisation consultant, enhancing the ideas and design scope.

The third option offers special equipment ranging from extra range leathers, alcantara detailing such as piping, three-layer paints, coloured carbon fibre and painted rims. ‘Tailor Made’ is the brand’s most exclusive customisation process and involves clients making their personalisation choices on site in Maranello where they are accompanied by a personal designer who will assist them in creating their bespoke Ferrari right down to the tiniest detail. Here owners can opt for luxury traditional materials such as cashmere or denim as well as being afforded access to high tech options such as carbon fibre.

“The end result in each and every instance is a standard of exclusivity completely unmatched anywhere in the automotive sector. In fact, this is the first time many of the materials are being used or approved for use on cars,” Appleroth says.

Launched to coincide with the brand’s 70-year celebrations, the GTC4Lusso’s V12 engine is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds.

Each year Ferrari Australia hosts around 300 events across its Australasian network, incorporating an array of lifestyle experiences with the finest food and wine, art and design. A core part of this program is what Appleroth describes as “money can’t buy” experiences which have included sharing the closed road stages of Targa Tasmania with clients whose cars included limited editions LaFerrari and F12tdf.

ith her entire career spent in the automotive industry, Susan Butler has harboured a secret.

A talented leader who has around 40 staff reporting directly to her, Susan’s knowledge of all things automotive is exhaustive and her dedication to after sales service is second to none.

Yet, while few would dispute her industry know-how, those closest to her know to always check the transmission type before jumping in the car alongside her.

“After all these years in the car industry, I am still terrible at driving a manual,” the Victorian born mother-of-one concedes.

Yet despite her preference for an automatic, there is little in Susan’s professional background to suggest she ever opted for the easy way out.

A good student, particularly in the subjects of French and English, her early career aspirations were to become a journalist.

She despised mathematics, yet after year 12 went on to Monash University and studied a degree in art, majoring in sociology, before completing a business degree majoring in management.

While the degree was broad, she says it introduced her to research and analytical skills, and fine-tuned her approach to strategic thinking and communication.

Growing up in Melbourne as the eldest of five children, Susan believes it was the success achieved by her father that first exposed her to the value of hard work.

“My father owns a successful real estate business and I think that growing up in a real estate household aroused my interest in selling, and my understanding of building a business through networking and customer retention and loyalty.

“I think this is also where I got my work ethic from – my Dad would work crazy hours – weeknights and weekends. Thankfully automotive is not quite as demanding. As much as my father was a slave to the industry, he loved it – so from a young age I understood that you should enjoy what you do for living and develop a passion for it.”

Her career in sales began aged 14 when she was employed to “sell hamburgers” for fast food chain McDonalds. After starting out as a dining room attendant, she was eventually promoted to what she terms as the “rather prestigious” position of drive through operator.

She believes, as do many former employees, that McDonalds was an “amazing” employer whose regimented, process-driven approach and culture formed a great platform for young staff members new to the workforce. The company also engenders an enormous amount of pride from its staff by instilling the brand values, she says.

“It was probably here that I began to learn the value of a strong brand and, as an employee, the responsibility you have to communicate it in every interaction you have with the customer.”

Susan’s introduction to the automotive industry came almost by accident after she was part of a graduate program with another major German manufacturer.

In applying for a job with the company she erroneously assumed the offer of a role that would mean working in the corporate side of the company – possibly in training or HR. She was devastated upon learning her employer required her to work in a dealership for 18 months to learn the retail side of the business.

“It was actually my father that pushed me into accepting, and giving car sales a go. I took to the role and soon discovered that the ‘retail world’ is where the action happens.” You meet interesting people, the pace is very fast, and the job is lots of fun. After my first month, I Unique Luxur y

Last year Susan achieved her long held aim of being a published author after finishing and self-publishing her first book.

She began as a new car sales cadet in August 1996 and by 2004 had worked her way up to the role of General Sales Manager.

Her way of giving back to the car industry, ‘Life is not a test drive’ is an instructional, anecdotal and what she hopes will be an inspirational book about how to survive long-term in the automotive business.

In 2011 Susan made the move to Queensland for a competitive prestige automotive brand and duly became one of the few female Dealership Principals in Australia. Just three years later she moved back to her hometown after taking over the Mercedes-Benz Toorak dealership, making the move to her current role last November.

Initially set up as a satellite site, Mercedes-Benz Melbourne Airport serves largely as a convenient centre for people to service their cars whilst travelling.

Aside from developing a reputation for employing the highest quality technical staff and offering lightning quick turn-around times, Susan says the business differentiates itself from others in the sector by going the extra mile to enhance customer satisfaction levels.

This includes offering a chauffeur service to and from the PARKROYAL Hotel and a complimentary lunch, as well as a valet service to and from the airport. In addition, it is the only MercedesBenz dealership in the country with a helipad on site, regularly transferring customers to a variety of destinations including Southbank and South Wharf. At any given time, there are over 200 vehicles on display and many other options are readily available.

Since joining the dealership, Susan says she has worked hard to change perceptions of the business to ensure it is renown not just for its ability to service cars but also for sales.

This approach has also been extended to after sales service. Susan and her team take the approach that the service really begins when the customer drives out of the dealership at the wheel of their new vehicle. The higher the level of back-up service, contact and care provided over the years, the greater level of loyalty and trust.

“When you develop this relationship with your customers, it becomes so much easier for everybody. I have learnt over the years the price is only a small part of the overall equation. What customers really value is peace of mind and the sense that they are an important long-term customer of the business. This doesn’t happen without a lot of effort on our part.”

A keen runner, Susan says having interests outside of your professional life is key, as is taking pride in your work.

“I have a very busy home life – I have a nine-year-old girl and her pets to look after! She is obviously the most important part of my life and being a role model for her is something I take very seriously. I find time to exercise at least four times a week – I think staying fit really helps me to perform mentally and physically at work. I also have a love for writing and although I never quite achieved my goal of becoming a journalist, I have had some work published – this is something I am proud of.”

Labelling it a shame that car sales is not a popular career choice for most women, Susan says she is only too aware female employees are still a minority in the automotive sector, yet gender is not something she thinks about at work.

An advocate for getting more women into the sector, she tries to speak as often as she can at automotive forums and training colleges, actively encouraging young people of both genders to put it on their list.

“This industry offers a variety of career paths and rewarding opportunities for both men and women. We all work long hours in the car industry, you have to be hands-on due to the customerfocussed nature of the job. It can be mentally tiring, but never boring or tedious.”

Success means many different things, Susan says, but ultimately it is being able to look back at where you are in your career and being really honest with yourself.

“If you can say that you are proud and happy of where you are and how you got there, then this is success. Every job I have ever had, I feel I have tried as hard as I possibly could to achieve results, and regardless of the outcome on any given day, I go home knowing I have done my best.”

He was mentored by some of the best in the business but it is his family connections that proved to be the most influential in bespoke jewellery designer Matthew Ely’s burgeoning career.

he most precious gems in the life of Matthew Ely are undoubtedly wife Nicole, daughter Amity and the new addition which will be joining the Ely clan early next year.

Diamonds, however, run a close second.

Born into a jewellery dynasty the pride of Sydney’s west, exquisite rocks have always played a significant role in the young entrepreneur’s childhood and early upbringing with father Robert, mother Helen and brother Douglas all involved in the trade.

“My parents own and operate [York Jewellers] a wellestablished jewellery business in Sydney’s [Penrith], which allowed me to experience the day-to-day running of the industry and gain an insight into the world of jewellery design. My mother and father have always exemplified a strong work ethic.

I was extremely inspired by my father and his passion for design as a child, and his influence definitely shaped my approach to luxury jewellery design.”

Yet despite his own success, and the early enthusiasm shown by his son, the family patriarch was initially apprehensive about allowing his second born into the family business.

In 1999 when he was 12, Matthew applied for a job at York but was knocked back with his father politely, but firmly, insisting there was no spot available. He encouraged the then teenager to instead try his hand at other trades.

Matthew found work at a furniture store and later as a boilermaker but the attraction of the jewellery industry proved too strong and

three years later Robert relented and offered him a job at York as a sales assistant.

He began his formal jewellery design training at Enmore TAFE and was still in his first year when he placed first in the state and second nationally in the World Skills National Championship. On the back of that he received a scholarship to London with the Australian Overseas Foundation.

Moving half way around the world at such a young age was not easy but it wouldn’t take him long to begin fulfilling his passion.

After securing digs in East Putney he started knocking on doors to find work. Just weeks after passing through Heathrow immigration, he secured a job in a manufacturing workshop, Jacobs Jewellery. With it arose the opportunity to work alongside, what Matthew describes as, some of the greatest designers in the industry.

“The workshop manager had worked on some of the biggest diamonds in the world - 100 carat-plus - the diamond setter was a man whom had worked on the English crown jewels, and lastly, there was a New Zealand jeweller that manufactured the £1 million necklace from [219-year-old British fine jewellery design house] Boodles. My experiences in London working alongside three of the best jewellery mentors in the world were extremely inspirational in terms of my creativity and passion for design. Their expertise and humility in sharing their knowledge helped to refine my design practices and master the skills required to craft luxury bespoke pieces.”

Yet, in spite of having easy access to an assortment of precious stones, to this day Matthew only wears a single piece of jewellery – his wedding band which itself also has a unique connection to the time he spent abroad.

“This is a particularly important piece for me as l designed and crafted it myself and it features personal engravings which are very close to my heart. The engraving was a wedding gift from my engraving teacher in London. He was the engraver [employed] to carve the plaques in Westminster Abbey.”

Upon his return to Australia in 2014, Matthew was afforded the opportunity to open his own boutique in Woollahra in Sydney’s leafy eastern suburbs trading under the name Matthew Ely by York Jewellery.

He admits being “enthralled” by the idea of transcending from small and rustic to grand and luxe while utilising the training and skills sharpened while he was abroad.

Despite it occurring some years ago, Matthew says he can still vividly recall his first customers, a recently engaged couple who trusted him to craft their engagement ring, offering him the opportunity to not only design an exquisite piece but to personally source the gems within the ring.

In 2011, Matthew, who by then was a qualified Gemmologist, took out the Creative Jewellery Design Award at the Showcase International Design Awards. Other accolades include the ‘Fancy Colour Award’ at the Diamond Guild Australia Awards in 2013 with an Argyle pink and Blue diamond ring and the ‘Red Carpet Award’ at the Showcase International Design Awards in 2015.

He has recently been invited to join the Diamond Guild and is now the youngest ever invited member.

Showcasing a selection of his hand crafted, bespoke fine jewellery along with some award-winning pieces created over the years, his eponymous boutique specialises in custom one-off pieces but also offers recrafting of beloved pieces as well as repair and cleaning services.

Its point of difference is unquestionably the boutique’s bespoke design services.

“We create distinct bespoke pieces that feature immaculate design and craftsmanship and draw on my experience and knowledge of the industry. My process creating bespoke pieces for clients is an outstanding concept that allows for personalisation and something more unique than your classic jewellery piece. For brides, it represents an exciting opportunity to design a new piece that is their own, as opposed to buying a ring that is ready-made in store.”

A typical entry price point for a bespoke engagement ring is around $15,000 and he has a “small and trusted group of jewellery makers” who assist in bringing his inspiration and designs to life.

Every piece is designed and crafted onsite.

The process begins by Matthew inviting interested parties into the boutique where he gets to know them personally. Once in the store, clients are able to go into detail about what they’re looking for in their dream engagement ring or statement piece via a oneon-one consultation. Once clients have decided on their desired ring style, diamond (shape, cut, colour, clarity) and precious metal for the band, he hand draws various sketches of the piece so they can visualise how the piece will look once complete.

“I try to make these as realistic a representation as possible, believing it is crucial to ensure the end product closely resembles the dream piece that the client has in mind. We have the opportunity to source so many exquisite pieces for our clients, but one experience which I recall vividly was being asked to source a one carat Pink Diamond from Argyle for a private client.

This was such an exciting experience, as I had the opportunity to touch and see one of the rarest gems in the world. With regards to value, I would never divulge, but I will say it had to be delivered by armoured guard.”

An advocate for ethical sourcing, Matthew says the boutique partners with a number of suppliers to locate and source some of the most stunning and rarest gems in the world. He takes particular pride in supporting Australian suppliers and materials and has worked closely with the Argyle mine in the past, to source natural gems.

“I try to be vocal in my support of ethics in both gemmology and running a business.”.

Matthew says the jewellery industry has changed dramatically since he first became involved, particularly in the engagement market, where partners now spend much more to impress and meet much higher expectations from their brides to be.

“The old three-month salary rule is no longer valid, with couples spending more to craft their perfect bespoke piece to reflect their unique love story.”

But the greatest issue impacting the sector has been the use of synthetic diamonds – a development he believes has only increased the value and demand for luxurious high quality natural diamonds.

With such an abundance of different forms of diamonds available, the popularity of naturally coloured diamonds is continually on the increase and supported by growing industry demand over the past few years, he says.

“There is a definite ‘Hollywood factor’ contributing to this rise in popularity, with naturally coloured diamonds exemplifying a modernity and fashion forward approach to jewellery design. We often see clients looking for something different or unusual in

terms of their jewellery, and utilising a naturally coloured diamond is an excellent way to exemplify uniqueness whilst maintaining a luxurious design. I am also seeing a sharp increase in demand for pink diamonds with the announcement of the Argyle mine closing in 2021. This supply supports 95 percent of the pink diamonds in the world.”

The demand has also been extended to pearls which have also seen a resurgence in popularity. Having become somewhat of a destination for stunning pearls, Australia is in a perfect place to capitalise on this, he says.

“The globalisation of the market has allowed for gems and other precious materials to be easily sourced by all. I think it’s now more important than ever to develop a trusted relationship with your jeweller. As an expert in the field, only a jeweller can provide you the knowledge and experience necessary to ensure you are truly paying for quality. There is a multitude of information online which may give people an impression of being a diamond expert. Whilst clients should by all means be informed, it’s important that they build a strong rapport with their jeweller so they can understand what they are buying.”

t is a design philosophy that has transitioned through more than nine decades of trading, numerous global economic meltdowns, a world war and countless technology revolutions.

Yet Danish brand Bang & Olufsen’s (B&O) focus on products that transmit sound authentically - the way the artist intended it to be heard - and opulent, sculpture-like finishes has never held it in better stead.

From humble beginnings in 1925, today B&O is one of the world’s most prominent home entertainment manufacturers with its heavyweight portfolio of quality televisions, music systems and high-performance loudspeakers, telephones, and multimedia products now sold across an extensive, independent retail network of 700 stores in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Clearly striking a chord with both audiophiles and those who appreciate clean design, superior technology and fine craftsmanship, it boasts its own wing in the Struer Museum, records annual group revenues of around A$496 million and has a cult-like following where a number of fan sites have sprung up dedicated to dissecting the company’s every move – whether real or imagined.

Not forgetting, of course, its enviable research, development and test facilities highly sought after by the automotive industry by brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, as well as the oft-repeated rumour that the revolutionary Apple iPod design was inspired by B&O’s BeoCom 6000 – a wireless telephone that contained a wheel to scroll.

The group currently operates 22 eponymous stores across the Asia Pacific region with a presence across Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland. The brand’s Australasian arm is led by general manager Julian Kipping who boasts a 20-year history with the brand, initially as a franchisee in his native UK before being approached to head up the ANZ market in 2006.

In his time occupying the big chair, Kipping has led the group through an enormous period of change that aside from new store openings and new inventory has also witnessed the Australasian operations acquired by privately owned conglomerate Emerald Group Investments (EGI) just two years ago.

Led by former bank analyst James Kennedy with former Prada Australian manager Melinda O’Rourke as chief business development officer, EGI has not been shy in positioning itself as the Australian version of French luxury multinational LVMH. The result of which means B&O is now housed in a stable that includes several luxury fashion and homeware brands including Graff Diamonds, Kennedy (the leading multi-brand watch retailer for Cartier, Rolex, IWC and Patek Philippe) and Spanish brand Loewe.

Kipping says EGI’s decision to invest in the brand came about due to the recognition that the ANZ market held great potential for growth but that investment was needed to realise it.

B&O’s global strategic focus did not extend to company-owned stores and as such a partnership with a local master dealer was the clear direction, he says. “EGI has wasted no time in auctioning the

We have moved two locations and upgraded them to sensory experience stores, doubled the level of marketing investment in the brand and invested in people via enhanced training and a broadening of the organisational chart, adding more headcount to provide a better end service internally and externally.”

Clearly the move has proved a profitable one with the Australian operations boasting significant growth in a period where other luxury retailers are struggling.

B&O’s current offering includes six types of wireless speaker systems, five different television products, 11 speaker offerings, two sound systems, four Bluetooth speaker systems and 10 different headphone types as well as numerous apps and accessories all designed to combine technological excellence with emotional appeal in what the brand itself terms a “sensational design language”.

Kipping says he’s unsure how much of the overall revenue the Australasian market accounts for but notes that it is “significant”.

While an increased marketing push has helped boost the Australasian coffers, its success is largely due to the introduction of the B&O Play ‘‘on-the-go’’ standalone range of speakers and headphones that since its introduction in 2012 has allowed

consumers access to the brand’s sleek design at a low entry point, he says.

“We’re seeing people come in who are in their 20s, buying into the brand.

“You can get into a pair of Bang & Olufsen headphones for under $200. Right at the other end of the scale there’s people who have been with the brand for many, many years still purchasing, repeat purchasing, and adding to their existing systems well into their 70s.”

In an interview with The Australian newspaper late last year Kipping noted B&O’s current offering was the best brand portfolio it had ever had.

“We’ve become a lot more accessible in one sense and a lot more luxurious and exclusive in another... we’re appealing to more and more people.”

In April last year the group opened its first Australian sensory store in Melbourne. The next generation store, designed in collaboration with local architects Bates Smarts and the global Bang & Olufsen design team, spans 381sqm and is the fourth largest of its kind globally.

brand’s signature sound. The hero of the store occupies almost a quarter of its space and is the largest interactive speaker wall in the country.

Kipping says the size in itself is very unusual – both for B&O itself and also the audiovisual world generally.

“The 1920s building it is located in provides a nod to our birth heritage of 1925, when it all began in Struer. It is designed to surprise people by bringing a sense of luxury look and feel, as well as experience, to buying television and hi-fi, including a coffee bar area to just sit and take in the ambience of the location.

“Turning walls enable a customer to view a number of different television sizes, types and stand positions from a single seat and a loudspeaker wall hides and reveals different types of loudspeaker depending on the customers choice. Finally, a dedicated experience room, with our top end loudspeakers and television combination takes home entertainment to a whole new level of luxury.”

This innovative, interactive way of doing business is a world away from the brand’s origins when a young Dane by the name of Svend Olufsen began tinkering with a relatively new piece of wireless technology, now known as a radio transmitter in 1924. A year later he teamed up with fellow engineer, and former classmate, Peter

Bang and the pair set up a makeshift laboratory in the attic of Olufsen’s ancestral home.

The first commercially viable product to bear the B&O name was produced in 1927. Labelled the Eliminator, it enabled a radio to be connected directly to the mains rather than being battery-operated which had been previously the norm.

Later that same year the pair moved production to a new, purposebuilt factory just outside the town of Struer, around 350km west of Copenhagen, where Peter concentrated on the technology while Svend dealt with business operations.

Having their factory burnt down by pro-Nazi saboteurs unhappy as B&O’s refusal to collaborate with the Germans did little to dissuade the pair who rebuilt and continued to concentrate on quality materials and the application of new technology. Early products included the Five Lamper, a radio in a walnut and maple cabinet that took its aesthetic cues from furniture, a radiogramophone and a tone-film public address system for use in cinemas.

In the mid-‘80s the brand entertained plans to develop new mobile phones, MP3 players and recordable hard disk drives but following the global financial crisis of 2008, abandoned these to focus on its traditional strengths of high quality audio and video products.

It wasn’t until 1990 that the brand opened dedicated B&O stores selling directly to users instead of selling through retailers.

In 1997 B&O opened new headquarters in Struer where almost a third of the town are employed by the brand. Affectionately known as 'The Farm', the building covers a total area of 1121 square metres and continues the brand’s unorthodox approach to design. Inspired by the solitary farmhouses typical of the area, the new main building and its courtyard boasts glass floors, staircases, and ceilings as well as an unfettered view of all activities.

While numerous high-profile designers including Henning Moldenhawer and Jacob Jensen have put their name to B&O products, the brand prefers to hire designers rather than employing them directly.

In addition its pioneering design team only spends two days per month at B&O headquarters and construct initial versions of products out of cardboard, paper, plastic or whatever is at hand.

The company believes this approach gives the designers the freedom and flexibility to take a fresh approach to each new product.

Yet this fluid approach to work does not translate to the company’s sustainability and corporate social responsibility obligations, these it takes very seriously. Being the producer of audiovisual goods has meant its manufacturing process has always been the subject of much curiosity.

To this end each product has a project manager that must sign-off that the product will meet the relevant environmental design standards otherwise the product cannot progress to the next development stage.

In addition, testing is carried out to simulate the dismantling process at the disposal after 15–20 years of use to ensure that the product can actually be separated into the appropriate fractions.

This process also generates suggestions for improvement in utilisation of waste products that can be applied to subsequent development projects.

As well as consumer products the company also produces business-to-business services, particularly in the area of custom audio-visual installations for car manufacturers, and the service industry. Additionally the company's expertise in aluminium manufacturing is available to other businesses for the production of non-B&O products.

Owing to both its aesthetic and durable properties, aluminium has always been the brand’s go-to core material. For this reason the farm boasts its own anodizing department consisting of 50 baths, each with its own function ranging from degreasing and preserving, to staining and sealing.

In order to meet its sustainability obligations, the waste water containing remnants of colourants and aluminium is cleaned in an internal cleaning unit before being transported to public utility cleaning facilities. The waste water is neutralised during cleaning.

Sludge from the internal cleaning unit is then drained and compacted into filter cakes prior to removal. The aluminium-based sludge is then reused in production processes for concrete. Yet more proof that the B&O design philosophy was built to endure.

or its 71st collection, Christian Dior releases the third season of Maria Chirui, the fashion house’s first female creative director. While last year’s Tudor velvets and houndstooth skirts inhabited some distinctly period elements, Chirui’s fall collection embraces a scarily topical ‘genderless’ brief.

rada was a true co-ed runway show. There was something dreamy about it all, like creative director Miuccia Prada had spliced together her coming-of-age memories of 1970s bohemian Italy - mishmash of corduroy, fur and pulp fiction iconography – with highly-loaded shamanistic symbolism of conch shells, feathers and sticks.

What we can decipher from the dream? Back stage Ms Prada offered the clue: “I don’t want to be political. Not officially political. I have to slip it in.”

In such an autobiographical collection, one looks to the pulp fiction prints for a political agenda. The artwork was pulled from paperback novels of the ‘60s, drawn by renowned illustrator Robert E. McGinnis. His femme fatale Barbarella and Bond girl shtick has been critiqued in the past as a product of a sexist patriarchy.

It is home to the second highest mountain peak in Indonesia and the scene of some of the largest surf breaks on the planet, but Australians are discovering there is much more to Lombok than meets the eye, as Unique Luxury reveals.

epending on who you believe, Lombok is an island of many faces. With descriptors ranging from the “Phuket of 30 years ago” to Bali’s “better looking sister”, the island that lies east of Indonesia’s most populous tourist spot is rapidly gaining a reputation as the go-to destination for unspoiled tropical beauty.

As most fly-in fly-out Western Australian workers can attest, the most developed tourism area of the island is on the west coast of where it is centred around the township of Senggigi – along an area which stretches out along several kilometres of the beachfront just to the north of Mataram.

Covering around 4,725 km2 in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Lombok is a small island that spans 80 kilometres from its northern point to its most southern point. Its most prominent feature is Mt Rinjani, an active volcano that dominates the landscape, rising 3,726 metres above sea level.

The site was the scene of a building frenzy in the late 1990s when Lombok was being heavily touted as the next big Indonesian destination. However, race riots, together with the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings and the 2007/08 global financial crisis dealt Senggigi a severe blow, with many construction projects halted and tourists severely impacted.

Just three hours and 40 minutes flying time from Perth, two hours 30 minutes from Singapore, or just 30 minutes from Bali, Lombok boasts a climate that seldom sees temperatures above 33C or below 21C. Which perhaps goes some of the way to explaining why around 3.1 million Indonesians and an increasing number of ex-pat Australians now call it home.

Despite an increasingly modern society, Lombok is one of the few places frequented by tourists that has managed to retain much of its authentic history and indigenous culture. About 85 percent of the 3.1 million population of Lombok are Sasak, a people closely related to the Balinese.

Famed for its beautiful, largely deserted, white sandy beaches, unspoiled rainforest, rich biodiversity, diverse marine life, enviable diving, surfing and snorkelling spots and cascading waterfalls, Lombok is also home to Namada Park. Lying just 10km east of the capital, Mataram, the park was originally a relaxation compound for the king but is now open to the public. Featuring a traditional Hindu temple and swimming pool, it’s biggest drawcard is a unique water feature known as the 'youth fountain' which is said to grant long life to anyone who drinks the water.

There is, however, much more to Lombok than initial impressions would suggest.

In recent years things have once again started to take off.

A 2015 report produced by Horwath Hotel Tourism & Leisure showed that, overall, the growth in tourism arrivals to Lombok has been solid, from a low of under 400,000 in 2004 to about 1.6 million in 2014. The same report noted that together with Malaysia, Australia was among the top feeder markets for Lombok, accounting for 25 percent of all guest arrivals on the island.

The Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) credits the opening of Lombok International Airport in 2011 as the reason the island has registered a 200 percent average increase in visitors.

Inhabitants of the island have also benefited from the influx through the creation of jobs while the development has also prompted new infrastructure in the form of roads and power plants.

In order to put this effort into meeting its goal of attracting around 20 million foreign holiday makers by the year 2020, the Indonesian government also introduced a visa-free tourism policy which covered inbound travellers coming from more than 100 different countries. Clearance approval was also eliminated for yachts entering the Indonesian territory and the cabotage policy was deregulated for international cruise ships.

Interior Designer Ros Hemley, the creative director of Burleigh Heads headquartered design firm The Interior Space is a regular visitor to Lombok.

She first began visiting for design projects several years ago and was eventually prompted to open an Indonesian arm of her business and attained ex-pat status.

Ros says when she first visited Lombok she found herself captivated by the raw beauty of the island.

Already home to an expansive community of affluent ex-pat Australians, investment on the island, particularly on the more affluent southern tip is booming.

“Colours have such clarity and the views are breath-taking. Having spent a lot of time in Bali, I immediately felt like I had stepped back in time.”

Wary of the mistakes made by Bali in opening the doors to tourist hordes but conscious that the same growth potential exists for Lombok, the Indonesian government has been open about the fact it is determined to handle progress carefully.

Ros says while Lombok is as equally beautiful as Bali, it is less developed, which many feel is a refreshing change, she says.

Viewing sustainable tourism as the way forward, it has developed an eco-economy master plan and promised funding to market it.

“The architecture comes alive with the gilding and colours of the mosques, traditional fabrics in rich weaves and prints adorn the outfits of the women as they pass by. Market places are seen by the roadside with all on offer from fruits to Ikat or woven baskets.

It is common to witness locals travelling in horse and cart.

As a result, there are a number of both private and governmentbacked resort projects being constructed in Lombok.

“I have been impressed with the way in which people in third world cultures have a sense of happiness and their strong belief system seems to give them a depth that is difficult to conceptualise. It is better to experience this and I am sure that is why Lombok is fast becoming an important destination on the experiential travel calendar of those in the know.”

But it seems it’s not just tourists who are being lured by the island’s

By far the largest and most impressive is the development of the new US$3 billion Mandalika Resort in Kuta Bay, South Lombok which the ITDC head of investment and marketing Ricky Baheramsjah says is a major driving in increasing land values on the island. The project, thought to be the largest of its kind in South East Asia, will see the development of a number of luxury hotels, a yacht marina, golf courses, water theme parks and a Moto GP race track. More than 10,000 hotel rooms and 1,500 residential units will be built, the vast majority of which are expected to be operational by the end of 2018.

Construction of the Pullman Hotel is already underway with Club Med, Royal Tulip, Paramount Hotels and X2 Resorts all due to start building before the end of the year.

Supporting infrastructure planned for the Mandalika Resort area includes facilities for reverse osmosis, solar cells, water and waste treatment plan, accessibility support, ports and a marina, tourism school, places of worship, offices, roads and bridges, water irrigation, electricity, gas, and ICT. To support the vision of the Mandalika development, an internal transportation system is also being touted. The electric train will be the alternative for an eco-friendly transportation solution.

Embracing the natural setting, there will be a cable car for public recreational transport.

Another new addition to South Lombok is Selong Selo Residences, a premium residential villa community being built 30 minutes’ drive from Kuta.

Located on a hillside overlooking Selong Belanak Bay in a more remote part of the island, it is the brainchild of two Australians – investment bankers Andrew Corkery and James Nash - and offers residents a complete resort-style experience with access to high-end facilities including a gym, kid’s club, restaurants, spa, swimming pool and tennis court as well as 24-hour security, an in-house chef, butler and activity centre.

Comprising 65 private residential villas, investors can choose to purchase sub-divided plots or fully-furnished turnkey villas that come with two or three-bedrooms and around 2,443 square feet of living space.

Due for completion in 2020, the developers are taking the property's green credentials seriously, employing the head of green infrastructure developer IDPM, to oversee how best to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In line with its sustainable development model, the development will use green building materials, including European-engineered timber. In fact, the Selong Selo Group is implementing the integration of advanced solar and water treatment technologies across all aspects of the development, enabling the entire complex to subsist on a microgrid. When complete, the resort will include high-efficiency air-conditioning, LED lighting and smart whitegoods that can be controlled remotely.
