hen it comes to the invention of items of historical importance, the early to mid 1830s proved quite the bonanza period.
It was around this time that a chap by the name of Edwin Budding England first patented the design of the lawn mower, a contraption that would transform the grass to lawn of sports grounds and expansive private and public gardens. It was also during this period in time that French tailor Barthélemy Thimonnier patented a machine capable of replicating hand sewing, becoming the first ever mechanised clothing manufacturer in the process. Eager to be a part of this important revolutionary period, 1833 was the year the son of a humble blacksmith, Antoine LeCoultre, invented a machine to cut watch pinions from steel. That same year he would transform a family barn in the Swiss village of Le Sentier into a small watch-making atelier. Yet it would take the self-taught industrial pioneer a further decade of honing his horological skills before inventing, what at the time proved the world’s most precise measuring instrument, the Millionomètre. The first instrument in history capable of measuring the micron, its invention enabled the design of smaller, lighter watches. Its composition however was kept a closely-guarded secret and was used by the company for more than 50 years before making its public debut at a world fair in Paris.
In 1847, the high-end watchmaker created another system - this time one that did away with the need to use keys to wind up watches, by utilising a single lever crown to serve these two purposes. Twenty years down the track and the family workshop had morphed into the first fully-fledged watch-making facility in the area, a place where multiple watchmakers pooled their expertise in the invention of new mechanisms. In 1903, some years following Antoine’s death at the age of 78, French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger called for Swiss manufacturers willing to develop and produce the ultra-thin movements he had invented. Antoine’s grandson, Jacques-David LeCoultre, accepted the challenge and the partnership that would later officially be known by the name of Jaeger-LeCoultre was born. Today, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Swiss luxury group Richemont, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains one of the world’s most prestigious watchmaking manufacturers. Renowned as much for its custom designs as it is for its high profile alliances across the cinematic and sporting industries, it has a presence across more than six continents including Europe, America and Asia, as well as its 19 Australian stockists. Since being launched, the brand has produced an impressive 1,242 different clock and watch mechanisms (known to the watch-making community as calibres), registered approximately 400 patents and created hundreds of other inventions.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin
Custom made engraving on a Jaeger-LeCoultre Classic Reverso
Those familiar with the Jaegar-LeCoultre name will no doubt know it for its Reverso timepiece which this year celebrated its 85th anniversary. Invented as a watch capable of surviving the hard knocks of a polo game: the case can be swivelled in its carrier to protect the watch glass. Other timepieces produced in the range include: the Duoplan, one of the first gem-set steel watches and the first to boast sapphire crystal glass; the Joaillerie 101, still considered the world’s smallest movement and the wristwatch of choice for Queen Elizabeth at her coronation; and the Atmos Clock - a timepiece of near-perpetual movement needing no human intervention and almost no energy. Iñigo Ohlsson, the managing director of Jaegar-LeCoultre Australia and New Zealand, says rather than undertaking seasonal launches, the brand launches a new collection, consisting of around 30 new pieces, at watch trade show Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie held in Geneva in January. Its grand complications (the more complex embodiment of its timepieces) are released throughout the year.
The ‘Big House’ is divided into a series of workshops where the masterful hand-enameling, engraving and gem-setting takes place. The vast room where most of the handcraft is completed is entirely enclosed by glass, while a round display table in its centre livestreams the different arts taking place by the talented craftsmen and women inside. One of the first and one of the last remaining watch manufacturers to make and assemble its own pallets – the regulating organ it calls the heart but in layman’s terms is the bit that makes the watch go ‘tick tock’ - all parts of the watch are decorated or circular grained, even the oscillating weight, which the brand refers to as adding “the sunshine” inside the watch. “A visit to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture is always a journey,” he says. “There are as many interesting encounters as stories unfolding. Each workshop has its own sounds, its own atmosphere, its own soul. Passion is everywhere - in every detail, every word spoken.”
While men’s watches have always been central to the brand, Ohlsson says this has changed in recent years to incorporate a range that reflects a more diverse audience. “The Australian consumer is smart and savvy. They appreciate fine materials and quality craftsmanship. They understand the value our watches hold.”
But it is not for vanity that its entry-level pieces start at around $8,000 per watch. While the majority sit in the $20,000 to $30,000 price range, some of the brand’s grand complications, many of which feature artwork as elaborate as Botticelli and van Gogh recreations on a 3cm2 dial amid other bespoke items, are priced closer to $500,000.
He believes the reason the heritage brand has withstood the pressures of modern commercial enterprise, at least in part, is owed to the effort it makes to breathe life into each of its products.
Typically, it can take up to four to five years from idea inception to completed watch, via sketches and movement design, then prototyping and finally debut and delivery. Assembly alone can take months, Ohlsson says.
Affording it an immense level of control over quality as well as a great level of flexibility when it comes to design and experimentation, Ohlsson says a key plank to its success is the fact Jaegar-LeCoulture is still manufactured from its Switzerland base from a site colloquially known as ‘Le Grand Maison’.
“Some of the grand complications take nearly a year to complete. Some pieces have as few as 100 parts, whereas others have upwards of 1,000 parts. The hands of many craftsmen and craftswomen end up touching each watch.” Unique Luxur y

One of Jaegar-LeCoultre’s most unique items, the Reverso Snow, has more than 2,700 diamonds and takes upwards of 600 hours to complete. To set the diamonds, which are placed on different levels to resemble a snowy motif, the craftsman must first ready the gold with a carving to seat it into, and then sculpt gold balls at the edge of each diamond corner to hold it into place without disrupting the beauty of the stone. Always seeking to tread the balance between what is trendy and what is timeless, the brand has undertaken numerous collaborations in recent years, including one with Australian designer Marc Newson, to ensure it remains relevant to the changing needs of its audience. In 2004, it teamed with Aston Martin to launch the Aston Martin Jaeger-LeCoultre gentleman’s watch inspired by a 70-year historical link between the two companies and in 2012 it teamed with the Italian luxury leathergoods brand Valextra to offer a two-tone version of its ladies’ Reverso watch.
Rendez-vous Ivy
However it is its 2016 collaboration with celebrated footwear designer Christian Louboutin for which it has garnered the most attention.
Ohlsson notes innovation is central to the brand DNA. “The brand loves a challenge and when you have an exacting customer, it drives the brand to challenge itself even further. Digital technology can be considered gadgets, it is a different product with different functionality and purpose. Fine watchmaking is timeless and people who have fine watches care about the complexity of producing a mechanical device that is also extremely accurate in time. You will find the majority of our customers also have a fitness tracker as well. Our watches and these trackers serve completely different purposes. Our watches will never be replaced by them. “Jaegar-LeCoulture [however] is ultimately about its people, its employees - each share in the brand DNA. Growing and investing in our people will protect the brand in the future.”
Reverso One High
A promotional video the brand produced to offer insight into its creations claims some of the staff in this area have dedicated more than 40 years to this specialty and consider it ‘the height of their art’.
Timed to coincide with the 85th birthday celebrations of the product, Louboutin helped re-design the Art Deco-inspired Reverso ladies watch to show his personality, complete with a telltale red leather inside the strap. In helping launch the offering Louboutin noted: “I found parallels between making shoes and watches. Both contain hidden engineering that in a shoe has to carry weight and give the right centre of gravity for balance, and in a watch makes it keep accurate time, which is far more technical. When you design a shoe the last gives the shape and structure – the rest is decoration – and I always say a shoe needs the ‘perfect face’ that a good last gives it. The Reverso is the same: the dial design is so well balanced I didn’t want to change it, but to work within that frame.”
Rendez-vous Ivy Minute Repeater
Under artistic director Janek Deleskiewicz, master watchmakers work side-by-side with the companies designers and engineers to make the grand complications.

ttending the recent Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance at Blenheim Palace in the Oxfordshire countryside set my mind thinking. My train of thought not only ran along the line of beautiful cars set amid stunning architecture and grounds, but it made me reconsider one of the greatest British figures of the last century. Blenheim is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, often described as ‘Britain’s Greatest Palace’. It is currently home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, and was a gift of thanks from Queen Anne to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. The reason for the bestowal was to mark his victory over the French forces of Louis XIV at the Battle of Blenheim on the Danube in Southern Germany in 1704. This Baroque architectural masterpiece along with its 2,000 acres of landscaped grounds by Capability Brown provides a wondrous setting for the visitors who come to the event. It was also the birthplace of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30th November 1874 – 24th January 1965). Visiting the great man’s birthplace made me appreciate what an amazing life he led but more importantly what an amazing character he must have been. Twice Prime Minister of Great Britain between 1940-45 and 1951-55, educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, Winston Churchill was undoubtedly born with a silver spoon in his mouth (just look at the monumental splendour of Blenheim Palace designed by John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor) and belonged to the class of the very privileged few. And yet in his greatest hour here was a man loved by every one of his compatriots and the world over. Of

course we are all familiar with the Churchill who led Britain through its darkest hours of World War II and who famously said, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat”, the Statesman who united a nation and the United States and the Soviet Union against the Axis Powers. But look a little deeper behind that British Bulldog physiognomy and the V for Victory sign and there is a complex character offering much more than just blood, toil, tears and sweat, indeed quite a lot of champagne too! This was a man who was a romantic and a realist, a patriot and yet a citizen of the world, a dyed-in-the-wool conservative but one with liberal convictions for social reform. Of the upper class, but yet a British yeoman, albeit one who could say, “My tastes are simple; I am easily satisfied with the very best.” Even as early as the First World War, Churchill was a polarising figure, a man who alienated the ruling class of which he was a part by his understanding of the needs of the common man. Prior to this he had already proved himself in the battlefield and had returned home to England a hero after being interned as a prisoner of war in South Africa and then making his escape whilst reporting on the Boer War for The Morning Post. All through his life he was involved in politics at the very highest level but he was a man of humour and intelligence and a man who loved the finer things in life, who in 1937 said, “Books, in all their variety, offer the human intellect the means whereby civilisation may be carried triumphantly forward,” but who also said in 1931, “First things first. Get the Champagne.”
Churchill was a politician, a soldier, an orator, a journalist, a biographer, a talented amateur painter, a traveler, an historian of classic proportions, a winner of the 1953 Nobel Prize for Literature ("for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values"), and a bon vivant who probably did more for Pol-Roger and cigars than any other single individual. In 1946 he said to Odette Pol-Roger, “I could not live without Champagne. In victory I deserve it. In defeat I need it.”
Citizenship. Today this influence still exists, not only in his legacy of saving the free world from Fascism, but in little things too. As I flew to England for the Blenheim event my plane stopped in Hong Kong, the cigars at Duty Free carried his imprimatur, and my little hotel when I arrived in Oxfordshire, why the Churchill Court Hotel of course.
Churchill loved England and saved England, but he also loved to travel the world and this is reflected in his paintings, not only of the English countryside, but also of places such as North Africa and Canada, and in his appreciation of an 1807 Napoleon Cognac when staying at the Hôtel de Paris in Monte Carlo where he often demonstrated his copious appetites. The stories of this amazing and quirky character are endless. Nancy Astor, the American-born socialite who became the first female Member of Parliament once said to Churchill, “If I were married to you, I’d put poison in your coffee.” The riposte from Winnie, quick as a flash, “If I were married to you, I’d drink it.” All of us have our favourite quotations and there are so many of them, none it would seem apocryphal but all true. What would one expect of a man who wrote and read and thought so much and who lived until his 91st year. “I hope, sir, that I will take your picture on your hundredth birthday,” said a photographer in 1949, “I don’t see why not, young man. You look reasonably fit and healthy” was the pithy reply from the man who started drinking Johnnie Walker Red Label at breakfast and was never without his habitual cigar. These, of which he smoked eight to ten a day, he had first been exposed to after visiting Cuba in 1895 as a reporter for the Daily Graphic covering the Spanish-Cuban war! What a character, his influence so far reaching that in 1963, two years before his passing he was uniquely granted honorary US Unique Luxur y

urberry expresses how perfectly positioned it is to attract a new kind of fashion consumer – one who covets pre-industrialised craftsmanship, where the making and the maker are as important as the product. Which is why Burberry did something extra special when launching its first ‘straight to consumer’ show by creating the ‘’Makers House’, a pop-up partnership between the British heritage fashion brand and British luxury craft retailer. Makers House gave the perfect context for Burberry’s latest collection, celebrating “methods, materials and makers”. According to the fashion house, the collection was inspired by 50

“a reflection on the way a house changes its character over the centuries driven by the people, clothes and cultures that inhabit it”. “The collection combines noble and authentic fabrics, blending denim and sweat shirting with cashmere and pyjama silks. It blurs masculine and feminine, casual and formal, night and day, all mixed together to create a new reality born of all the moments that have gone before.” Pea coats and silk pyjama bottoms trussed with studded leather belts featured. Structured, riveted suits with graphic designs also tell the story of their makers and materials. Importantly, the craft popup show signaled Burberry’s first straight-to-consumer collection fashion show.

ll things tropical may seem ubiquitous on mid-market racks this summer, but rest assured Chanel’s take on the Caribbean aesthetic is something special. Lagerfeld double-scoops with a full gelato palette for the Cruise Cuba men’s collection, but the best of the women’s show differs with a distinctive subdued smokiness.
Black gold and beige leather loafer - $1,360
Caribbean silhouettes are given a tobacco flavour with blacks and whites in cloudy, shadowy hues. Chromatic Cuba is offered up in a tiered flounced petticoat in a leaf motif embroidered organza that Lagerfeld beefs up with a mess jacket worn over a white shirt with tie. Beige straw and black grosgrain hat - $1,790
Birds of paradise embroidered on a long dress and bolero ensemble in beige crochet is smoking hot. For day, a diaphanous blouse is paired with rolled-up chino trousers; for night, the Cuban shirt is transformed into a black transparent organza blouse tightly belted with a flared skirt.
Multi row fantasy pearls necklace - $4,950
Square Chain sunglasses - $630
The Cuban accessories translate effortlessly into the spiritual seaside mecca of North Coast Australia with caged sandals worn over ankle socks. The crocheted backpack is versatile, sure, but the “cigar box” reticule crystalises Cuba’s appeal and should prove popular among those who really exhale the old-world Caribbean aesthetic. Trade restrictions may have been lifted with the US, but the look is pure Havana.

n leading the Christian Dior creative team’s efforts this season Lucie Meier and Serge Ruffieux tell a story all about English curiosity and eccentricity.
The talented duo say this cruise offering this season drew inspiration not only from the post-war high society’s wardrobes, but also the restlessness and wanderlust that characterised the period: the urge to travel and discover the undiscovered. For cruise the Dior woman finds her inspiration in travel and discovery and this sentiment is most evident in her accessories. Bracelets are an accumulation of bangles of different materials and colors such as dark wood, leather, enamel, stones and metal. Zebra stripes and giraffe prints just add to the unconventionality. A diverse use of velvets and silks in Asian and African prints, patterns and embroideries are purposefully eclectic. Jaffa, black, red and gold feature throughout the collection. Dior's signature bar jacket is loosened at the waist and Dior’s signature bows are flagrantly left undone. Darn the old rules, the restless voyager seems to say with several layered outfits such as skirts over trousers. The sleeves are big and bunched up to the elbow, worn with trousers flared and cut above the ankle or slim skirts. After all, when each exotic layer symbolises a stamp in the passport, who needs to play with all the Dior rules.

reathtakingly beautiful in every way, Chapel House is the epitome of an historic country estate with all the charm and character of yesteryear. Surrounded by 9 acres of magnificent gardens, the property incorporates several truly unique buildings each with their own amazing story. The oldest building is the Cobb and Co Inn, built of stone around 1832 and is mostly in 'original' condition. Behind that building is the quaint cottage, now a 2 bedroom guest cottage named The Owl Pen, which is believed to have been the original kitchen for the Inn. Attached to the cottage is 'the studio'. It started its life as an openair hand ball court for the Franciscan Monks who occupied the site from approximately 1919 to 1925. A second storey was added in the 1970's and was used as an art studio for 10 years by John Olsen, probably Australia's best known contemporary artist. The Franciscans also built the Georgian-style main home in 1920, attaching it to the Inn. This magnificent home features a large country kitchen, beautiful light-filled dining and lounge rooms, a billiard room and 4 bedrooms. The current owners have filled the garden beds with thousands of bulbs and roses, built arbours, created meandering streams and lovingly tendered the magnificent grounds and buildings. The property also incorporates 170 acres of land, an enormous dressage arena and holding paddock and is located in the historic village of Rydal. Rydal is a small Heritage-Listed Village with two churches, a hotel and the railway station. The nearest shops are in Wallerawang about ten minutes drive away. The property is located just 20 minutes from Lithgow and 2.5 hours drive (& 3 hours by train) from Sydney. Chapel House is a truly magical estate that must be seen to be truly appreciated.

Unique Luxur y

W
hat can I say about the Goodwood Revival except that I loved it and that three days is simply not long enough to see and do everything that is on offer.
Is the Revival an historic motor racing event? It is certainly organised by the British Automobile Racing Club. But then again is it a grand fancy dress ball or fashion parade? Certainly I have never seen so many people so pre-occupied with what they are wearing. Is it a music festival? Certainly everywhere you go at the Revival you can hear live bands playing, whether it is the Ding Dong Daddios on the Gasoline Alley ‘Bullet’ Stage or the band of the HM Royal Marines Portsmouth and at a dozen places in between. Air displays (Goodwood is the site of a former RAF base), an auction, a huge number of merchandise stands, a wall of death, a fun fair, you can even get your hair done or your shoes shined – for goodness sake, there was even a temporary Butlin’s holiday camp! Hi de Hi! I wanted to spend more time just looking around, the literally, hundreds of exhibitors all with something either interesting, nostalgic, exciting, unusual, luxurious, antique, vintage, authentic,
72
w w w.uni queest ate s. co m. a u
or just wonderful to see and possibly buy. Now, looking back at the programme, I could kick myself on account of the fact that I missed so many – I mean, I did not even make it to see the Bikini girls! But there was just too much great racing happening and those wonderful cars from humble Austin A35 to more exotic Ferrari 250 GTOs than one would have thought it possible to gather together in one place, just kept on appearing on the track. Even before I had got to the motor racing, even before I had reached the circuit, I knew that I was going to enjoy this time-warp experience. It was just like the first time I visited Venice – I had seen photographs of course, and knew what to expect, except that when I arrived what actually greeted me, was just so, well, unexpected. The Revival is all about anniversaries and this year the theme was the 50th Anniversary of England winning the World Cup in 1966. Here were people dressed as period football supporters, as period footballers – it was brilliant as I thought back to the day itself. 1966 was also the year that Jack Brabham became the first and only person to win the Formula One World Championship in a car bearing his own name. The aforementioned bikini was also celebrating 70 years, and it was also 50 years since Goodwood, “the home of British motor racing” closed its doors to racing.
In 1998, the owner of Goodwood, the Earl of March decided upon the idea of the Revival which winds back the clock to the circuit’s first era celebrating the cars, fashions, sounds and tastes of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. It is, in truth, a bizarre apparition that greets one, with people dressed in all manner of outfits: Hercule Poirot, Lawrence of Arabia, Soldiers, Sailors, Teddy Boys, Fly Boys, American servicemen, Edwardian Ladies, small boys with catapults, girls in miniskirts, women who wore miniskirts in the ‘60s in miniskirts, men in tweed, men in cloth caps, nurses, people dressed as mechanics in overalls, mechanics in overalls. Michael Crichton directed a film with Yul Brynner in 1973 called Westworld. If you remember, it is based in a future-world theme park where the guests indulged their role play fantasies. The Revival is like that film except that this is a nice world, where nothing goes wrong except for perhaps the weather. But even then, this being England, the stoicism of the natives comes to the fore just as it did back in the 1940s and ’50s – time for another cup of tea and carry on regardless just as Sid James might have done in Carry on Cabby, the 1963 movie which the amalgamation of period costume before one best evokes. It is a curious mixed up fashion world of innocence – not the 1940s, not the 1950s, not the 1960s, but a jumble of nostalgia, something remembered through rose-tinted spectacles, like the school milk of the time. Make no mistake though, the dressing up is taken seriously, the women chic and voguish, the men adopting an alter ego as if some video game avatar. If the period fashion is somewhat surreal then so too is the historic racing. Where else could one see 30 competing Austin A30 or A35, each mechanically identical and offering just 1293cc as in the St Mary’s Trophy race? The Settrington Cup is for Austin J40 pedal cars of the type that raced between 1949 and 1966 with nearly 50 little Stirling Mosses and Mossesses pedalling away frantically. Grand Prix and Voiturette cars from the 1930s and ‘40s; sports prototypes from the early 1960s; motorbikes from a 1926 Brough Superior to Vincents and Norton Manx taking part in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy; the Lavant Cup for drum-braked BMW and Bristol-engined sports cars form the 1930s -1950s; 1960s unlimited sports prototypes like Ford GT40s; cars form the early ‘50s such as the Jaguar C-Type that used to challenge for the Goodwood Nine-Hour races back in the day; Formula Juniors; 2.5 litre front-engined GP cars like BRM, or the legendary Maserati 250 F of which nine were running in the Richmond Trophy; World Championship sports cars including the Jaguar D-Type; quintessential 1960s 1.5 litre GP cars; the Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration with one of the most valuable grids imaginable, chock full of AC Cobras, Ferraris and Jaguars reliving the race which ran in period; or the twilight Kinrara Trophy, a brand new race for the type of cars that competed in the Tourist Trophy from 1960 – 62, British Racing Green versus Italian Rosso Corsa. The sensory smorgasbord is overwhelming. It is impossible to take a break from the sights and sounds of the cars, it is impossible to take a break from the fashion. It is as if one has been transported back from the digital/electronic age to the mechanical age – to a time when everything seemed much more simple, more innocent, more fun. The whole of the 2.4 mile circuit and everything inside it and outside of it makes one yearn for one’s own days of innocence, when, “most of our people have never had it so good”, as Harold Macmillan famously declared in 1957. But all good things must come to an end. So it is back to reality, at least until next year, and in the meantime, as a dedicated follower of fashion, I am working on a new outfit.

The Linney Effect For more than four decades the Linney name has been synonymous with gems of distinction, the best of which are hewn from the tough West Australian earth, as Tracey Porter discovers.

A
s the son of a watch maker, it seems only natural that Alan Linney should invest great store in precision and structure.
But were it not for a simple proposition from his father, this story may well have been about Alan the architect and not Alan the artisan.
It was around this time Linney met Bill Reed, an ambitious marine biologist, who was eager to take Australian South Sea pearls to the world. Impressed by Linney’s free-flowing designs and retail experience, Reed joined forces with the youngster and the legend that would ultimately become Linneys Jewellery was born.
Linney was only 15 when he left school determined to make his mark on the world by designing buildings, allegedly only changing his field of study upon learning he didn’t have the necessary marks to successfully configure constructions from his drawings.
It was the decision to specialise in local gemstones in the form of “mesmerizing” Argyle diamonds, “lustrous” Broome pearls and “sparkling” Kalgoorlie gold that helped make Linneys a household name in Western Australia and beyond.
It was Linney’s father who first tempted him to the world of jewellery and after securing a traineeship at a goldsmith’s in Perth, the teenager knew within weeks this was the opportunity he was destined for.
Linney says he has always enjoyed designing and making free-form or organic styled jewellery, working with the natural shapes of pearls.
In 1972, shortly after qualifying, Linney set up his first store. Inspired by his love of surfing, early pieces featured a leg rope from his board, driftwood and other non-traditional items, a move that caused some friction among his peers who initially sneered at his unique approach but later emulated it. “After a six-year apprenticeship I knew I wanted to create something different. I had the desire to combine the worlds of sculpture and jewellery together in a new way,” he says.
“My love of the Australian landscape has inspired much of my work over the past [44] years. I had the desire to combine the worlds of sculpture and jewellery together in a new way. It’s always been about the purity of the design and the execution.” These days Linney helps to oversee a multi-million dollar retail operation business, which had grown to four stores in Western Australia at one point, but today is concentrated across three showrooms in Perth’s Subiaco and Crown Casino and in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall.

Not as involved in the day-to-day operations as he once was, today Linney’s official title is managing director, a remit that includes control over the luxury brand’s creative team. Linney’s two sons are also involved with the business: youngest son Justin as creative director and middle son Nathan as the company’s Sydney-based operations director with responsibility for business development and coordination of Linneys’ pearl product. When it comes to pearls, Linneys primarily works with the white Australian South Sea incarnation although many designs also feature black Tahitian or stunning golden pearls. While its diamond range includes the famed Royal Asscher varietal, it is the Argyle diamond collection from which Linneys forged its formidable reputation, one that is has so cleverly cultivated. At the high end of its spectrum is its bespoke offerings, whereby some of the world’s most precious gems are purchased, paired with 18ct gold and other precious metals and then fashioned in iconic jewellery. At a more accessible end Linneys releases new collections annually with entry level price points starting at around $220 for a sterling silver neoprene bracelet, rising to $720 for a pair of 18ct white gold Australian South Sea Pearl earrings and $11,480 for a 18ct twotone gold sapphire and diamond ring.
At the very top end is the brand’s limited edition collections where $28,000 will be needed to secure a candy bracelet featuring 4.73ct of argyle pink and white baguette-cut diamonds which are set in 18ct white and rose gold. Synonymous for having one of the largest collections of Argyle Pink Diamonds in Australia, Linneys began working with fancy coloured Argyle diamonds shortly after the establishment of the mine more than 30 years ago. In 2010, Linneys invited former Argyle Diamonds international sales and marketing manger David Fardon in as chief executive to help consolidate its reputation as a purveyor of the mine’s coveted gems. Fardon says interest in pink diamonds and pink diamond jewellery has been building in recent times as the Argyle mine nears the end of its life. It is partly for this reason Linneys is a regular fixture at the annual Argyle Pink Diamond Tender where the best of the mine’s pink diamonds are offered for sale to the trade and then offered for purchase to the Linneys customer. In celebration of its lengthy connection with the mine, one of Linneys favourite showpieces is an Argyle Pink Diamond Tiara, an iconic and historic piece of Australian jewellery. Designed by the Royal Jeweller, Asprey of London, the almost 40ct tiara is bejewelled with 178 rare pink diamonds and valued at $2.85 million.

Earlier this year, Linneys displayed a collection of 15 pink diamonds, collectively valued at more than $20 million, at its stores in Perth and Sydney in what was one of the largest packages of pink diamonds assembled for sale in Australia outside Argyle’s own tenders. The showcase included a special piece called the Argyle ‘Blossom’ ring. Valued at $3 million, the ring was especially created to showcase the diamonds typically presented in the Argyle tender and featured five Argyle Pink Diamond stones totalling 3.22ct and a 0.33ct Round Brilliant Argyle violet diamond nestled amongst white diamond petals, bordered by more than one carat of Argyle blue diamonds. Fardon says while global markets have shown volatility and instability in recent times, demand for Argyle pink diamonds has continued unabated with the stones’ value increasing steadily over the past decade. “Each year Argyle pink diamonds appreciate at least 15 percent. Prices vary with the uniqueness of each Argyle pink diamond, with pink diamonds attracting prices 20 times higher than their white diamond equivalents. The gap widens for higher quality and stronger coloured pink diamonds, up to 50 times the value for diamonds with red colour tones.”
Priding itself on the ethical sourcing of its diamonds, Fardon says Linneys is associated with the Gemmological Institute of America and is part of the Diamond Guild of Australia, an association of industry leaders committed to establishing and preserving a benchmark for quality and ethics in the promotion and sale of diamonds throughout Australia. DGA members are selected due to their strict adherence to industry best practice and the Guild’s uniform Code of Ethics. To this end David Fardon says Linneys will only use the “highest quality, premium cut diamonds sourced in accordance with the Kimberley Process”. Linneys likes to support businesses that have supported it and in 2015 sponsored Australian couture designer Steven Khalil’s runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney. The alliance saw Justin Linney collaborate with the designer to create a curated collection of looks for the premiere showing. In addition, Alan and Michelle Linney support many worthy charitable causes including Variety – The Children’s Charity and the Ronald McDonald House.
In an interview with The Australian recently, Fardon said there are “many, many people” who buy pink diamonds because of what he termed ‘the aspirational factor’ and the fact they want to have a beautiful piece of jewellery that has a small piece of Australia in it. However, increasingly purchasers were looking at the purchase far more strategically – with some even buying them for their selfmanaged super fund portfolios.
This generosity also extends to its clients whom it hopes will keep its jewellery pieces as family heirlooms. Aside from its distinctive offering, the Linneys culture also sees it work hard to ensure repeat customer loyalty with customers offered free ring re-sizing and a complimentary clean and check of their items. In addition, the brand offers complimentary replacement and re-sizing of all its neoprene bangles for the life of the product while a gold plated display chain is included free of charge with all pendants.
But it is not just the impressive dollar value of these precious stones that is important to the Linneys team.
Testament to the fact that Linneys treats its customers as valuable as the gems they purvey to them.

reative director Riccardo Tisci recently noted that “in moments of crisis, people want to buy something that they recognise”.
And indeed there is a lot of recognisable Givenchy in his classic wardrobe component, with suits, jackets and shirts in navy and black with red band accents. But it’s the collection’s urban wardrobe that hints at the aforementioned crisis, with a pandemonium of prints layered to great effect. This is most evident in his layering of ‘Crazy Cleopatra’ prints - bold optical grid patterns – on leggings, Bermuda shorts, ankle boots, windbreakers and rave masks.
Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci military green backpack - $2,000
Givenchy by Riccardo Tisco new urban street high sneaker (calfskin) - $1,200
An Egyptian falcon motif is supersized and heat-bonded onto jacket tails, which is at once classic and athletic. The look is also in keeping with that gothic clubber aesthetic - the Italian designer’s longstanding point of difference. The lines between day and night are dissolved with the use of red striping and workwear paneling in his urban wardrobe. Jogging in neoprene with contrasting rubber side bands, teamed with a military green carcoat is a perfect example of athletic couture. For the man who wants to shout urban Givenchy, there is the t-shirt with contrasting collar with ‘Givenchy Paris’ printed to the chest. he palm-woven Panama hat, synonymous with Pacific seaside locales, translates effortlessly from old Cuba to new fiesta town, Byron Bay. In fact, the mood of Lagerfeld’s Cruise collection, although unashamedly Cuban, seems to have its sea legs firmly planted in both Pacific ports. The candy palette prints of Buicks and Cadillacs travel well to the Australian East Coast party. A rakish panama hat, teamed with Lagerfeld’s take on the traditional Cuban shirt, with pockets, shoulder tabs and pleats, effortlessly channels scoundrel chic. The exuberant mood of the collection was palpable at its launch on
the streets of Havana, which took place in an open-air street show featuring a tutti-frutti parade of open-top cars. The collection’s Cuban candy-coloured joy represents the very real newfound hope which has come from the recent lifting of strict trade embargos the country had with the United States. It is worth noting that The Chanel show came to Cuba only hours after the first American cruise ship in nearly 40 years arrived into port from Miami. The Panama hat, and Chanel’s steamy take on the Cuban shirt are welcome exports. The gelato colours are cross-cultural winners and reflect a time of great potential. Un i que Luxur y

omadic LV director Kim Jones is a traveller’s designer. But the globetrotter’s latest collection is more of a homecoming.
Jones’ collection is a personal journey that fuses formative years spent in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana with his later dalliance with London punk. The result is a culturally literate safari which bears witness to a remix of classic LV essentials—the bomber jacket, the travel bag, the luxury knit—with dangerous textures and detail. The collection may be coined ‘Safari Punk’, but his take on men’s jewellery, leather chokers, locks and silver key earrings have their roots in the English subculture. The locks, or Lockits, were made in association with UNICEF, and a proportion of the sale goes to help fight AIDS in South Africa.

I
t would not surprise me if Queen Street in Sydney’s fashionable village, Woollahra, was renamed. “Auction Alley” might be a more appropriate name for the beautiful tree-lined street which has become a mecca for Australia’s leading auction houses. Starting at one end of the street is the boutique Shapiro Auctioneers and Gallery, and as one walks up Queen Street towards Centennial Park, next comes Bonhams, now situated in the old Woollahra Post Office building. Just a little further along at number 39 is Leonard Joel, whilst Sotheby’s Australia is over on the other side of the road. Recently, not to be outdone, Australia’s leading operation came to town, when Mossgreen moved into 36 – 40 Queen Street. Mossgreen, since its foundation in Melbourne in 2004, has established itself as the region’s pre-eminent destination to enjoy, buy and sell rare and desirable objects of beauty and intrinsic value. As Australasia’s leading multi-department auction house, with a higher dollar turnover than any other, Mossgreen offers expertise and advice and holds auctions across a very wide sphere and range of disciplines. In particular, however, it has a fine reputation for handling Single-Owner Collections, high-end Australian, Chinese, Asian and International Art, Numismatics and Philately, and recently for important collectors motor cars. 2016 saw the acquisition of leading New Zealand house Webb’s and its rebranding as Mossgreen-Webb’s; as well as the establishment of Mossgreen on Queen Street in Sydney. Paul Sumner, co-founder and CEO of Mossgreen had long said that he would not open a Sydney site until he found a space compatible with, and commensurate to, the ethos and offerings of his company. This meant a space that would be a proper on-site sale room and not just a Sydney office base. The search for an appropriate space was a long time in the finding. However, Paul, with 30 years of experience in the industry including a spell as Managing Director of Sotheby’s in London, and his Board of Directors, Jack Gringlas OAM and Charles Leski who had established Leski Auctions in 1973 and which amalgamated with Mossgreen forty years later, jumped at the opportunity when it arose. 36 – 40 Queen Street is perhaps, along with the Georgian childhood home (on the same stretch of street at number 112) of the opera singer Dame Joan Sutherland, dubbed the “Voice of the Century” by Luciano Pavarotti, one of the finest and most interesting buildings in Woollahra. Woollahra, itself, being one of Sydney’s finest and most historic of suburbs. For Australia’s first and only combined auction house and art gallery, the new venue was perfect. Housed in The Bond, an iconic heritage building and former Odd Fellows Hall (a similar fraternal organisation to the Freemasons, or the Water Buffalo Lodge beloved of Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble), the exclusive new Sydney offering features two large-scale exhibition galleries and auction rooms as well as a state-of-the-art function space over the three levels in what is Queen Street’s largest building. The grand Mossgreen premises were originally built by architect John Frederick Hilly in 1867 and later extended to become a tobacco factory. Mossgreen has fully renovated the building for a second time after the work carried out by Leo and Anne Schofield back in 1970 and restored it to a wonderful arena for any work of art. Indeed, to launch the new Sydney Headquarters, a landmark sell-out auction of Max Dupain Estate photographs was held to much acclaim. As Paul Sumner said, “Mossgreen is delighted to launch our gracious new Sydney Auction Rooms and Galleries with such an important art event, by one of our country’s most celebrated artists. Max Dupain is a legend in himself and has created so many iconic images that are deeply etched in the psyche of this nation. We are delighted to be able to offer our Sydney clients access to the best exhibition and viewing premises in Sydney, as we further expand our business in Australia and New Zealand. We look forward to welcoming our highly valued clientele to our new home.”

t’s a keenly contested title but Singaporean Claire Chiang See Ngoh may just have the best job in the world.
The daughter of Chinese migrants, 65-year-old Chiang is a highprofile activist, entrepreneur and author but is perhaps best known for being the co-founder and senior vice president of the publiclylisted Banyan Tree Holdings Group (BTG). In a recent interview with the China Post espousing the hospitality group’s plans for future expansion, she detailed how much of her time is spent travelling and sightseeing while "looking for the best sites to open new hotels and resorts". “My job is idling away time in pursuit of pleasure,” she wryly noted. But however Chiang is choosing to spend her days it is clear the group’s ongoing success means she is unlikely to run out of opportunities to travel anytime soon. It was 30 years ago when Chiang and her developer husband Ho Kwon Ping purchased an expanse of coastal land in Phuket, Thailand that at the time was punctuated by cobalt blue lagoons. Their delight soon turned to disbelief when they discovered the blue

was in fact pollution by the former tenant, a tin mine. Having already fallen in love with the site and only too aware of its commercial potential they cleansed the acid-laden soil by planting more than 7,000 trees. In doing so the pair transformed an ecological wasteland into an oasis, the environmentally benign first Banyan Tree resort in 1994. Today BTG is a leading international operator and developer offering bespoke travel experiences across a global multi-million dollar portfolio of 43 hotels and resorts, 66 spas, 90 retail galleries, three golf courses and a timeshare holding on more than 100 villas. BTG’s Australian group property development manager, Rob Dullisear, says the properties are spread across 28 countries on three continents and have a total of around 5000 rooms available, each of which commands room rates at the high end of its local market. In addition, Banyan Tree develops and sells residential properties across seven countries: Thailand, Seychelles, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam and Australia, and has recently announced plans to launch new properties in Turkey and Cuba in addition to its intention to radically expand its Chinese portfolio.
Banyan Tree Phuket - Thailand Exuding elegance and refinement, the luxuriously appointed Banyan pool villas have seen this resort garner numerous international awards over its relatively short lifetime. The resort complex includes a range of restaurants and bars, meditation, t'ai chi and aerobics classes onsite and an 18-hole gold course, making it the ideal tropical retreat for rejuvenating body and soul.
