Activating the Parklet Our Vision
Official Events Programming
We envision three different categories of parklet programming for swissnex.
Prospective Programming
Prospective Audience
Frequency of Programming
Swiss government officials, swiss educators, current partner organizations and institutions
Members of current partner organizations, visitors from Switzerland
1-2 times per month
Visitors to swissnex, passersby, neighborhood residents and business employees
Weekly, biweekly
Business employees, tourists, other people unrelated to swissnex
Daily, outside of other programming
Entrepreneurs, local businesses, talented individuals
Local Programming
The public
Daily Usage
Our Role
We will assist swissnex in the curation of casual and frequent local programming of their parklet by expanding their knowledge of and engagement with other small businesses in Jackson Square. We will have a smaller role in swissnex official events programming and influence over daily usage.

Predicted Results of the swissnex Parklet “Connecting the Dots” in Jackson Square
Julia Grebenstein
Gabrielle Guidetti
Dana Schoewe
The results of these three parklets can be replicated in the swissnex parklet; furthermore, it is likely that pedestrian traffic will increase more dramatically with organized and interesting events occurring in the parklet on a regular basis. Parklets and the increase in activity they attract make nearby businesses more visible. Therefore, Jackson Square as a whole will reap both economic and community benefits from the swissnex parklet.

Demographic Characteristics In order to better understand who will benefit from the parklet and what the audience for programmed events will be, we have analysed the area demographics through GIS mapping. The result of the resident analysis was then contrasted with a study of typical users of the Jackson Square area.

Jackson Square is San Francisco’s original business district, strongly marked by the unique history of the gold rush and the Barbary Coast. Today the district counts many state and national landmarks, as it is one of the only neighborhoods to have survived the 1906 earthquake.

The Jackson Square region has a high frequency of parklets as a percentage of total open space. Pedestrians will be more accustomed to using the parklet as a space for recreation and programming. Green space is scarce and therefore incorporation of green elements into the parklet would serve a need in the community.

The instance of pedestrian traffic collisions is a proxy for total number of pedestrians in an area. Jackson Square has a relatively low pedestrian collision count, suggesting that the neighborhood currently has a low pedestrian volume and is likely perceived as relatively safe for pedestrians.
The parklet can influence the Jackson Square region in three important ways. First, the parklet will increase green open space where it is lacking by incorporating live plants and living walls. Second, the parklet will increase pedestrian-accessible open space where much of the open space is relatively inaccessible. Third, parklet programming will increase pedestrian activity in Jackson Square by activating a destination for tourists, workers in the Financial District, and the local population.

Jackson Square Neighborhood An examination of current building tenant use at the ground floor level created a baseline understanding of street life in Jackson Square. This analysis categorized building occupants and ground permeability. Permeability looked specifically at whether a member of the general public could access the building without a reservation or appointment. A three question survey was conducted of the local workforce about the neighborhood and swissnex.
Building Analysis
Intersection of Montgomery and Jackson While Jackson Square is a nexus between many different neighborhoods and has a walk score of 98, the buildings themselves remain largley inaccessible to passersby. Low permeability due to occupation mix creates an atmosphere of exclusivity.
Occupation mix is dictated by the rich history of the buildings. Tenants are predisposed to value history and design. Law offices and antique stores traditionally occupy these buildings.

Montgomery Street While ample sidewalks and abundant trees lend a generous and open atmosphere to Montgomery St, most buildings are impermeable to the general public. The parklet is a gateway to insert swissnex into the local community, and its programming provides a platform to open all doors in Jackson Square to the neighborhood´s residents, business owners, local workers, tourists, and everyone else that circulates in the Historic District.
Pedestrian
Green Space
Permeability
The parklet opens swissnex´s doors to Jackson Square while offering a platform for other neighbors to do the same. This helps to unlock Montgomery Street to the general public, making the area even more welcoming and increasing economic activity.
The parklet provides pedestrians with both a destination and a temporary refuge. It is a meeting place and a lunch spot, a rest stop and a tourist point of interest.
Programming activates Montgomery Street with participatory activities that give the general public another reason to come and stay on Jackson Square rather than simply pass through. The streets are lined with trees but the Historic District lacks welcoming spaces to accommodate people on the street. The parklet is an additional option to build green spaces on Montgomery St.

swissnex Parklet What is a Parklet?
A parklet repurposes a parking space into a public space for pedestrians to enjoy. Parklets are aesthetically pleasing street enhancements that add to a streetscape in an urban environment.
They provide amenities for pedestrians, such as seating, planting, bike parking and art.
20 ft
20 ft

While parklets are generally maintained by the private sector, they are open to the public at all times.
A General History (Park)ing Day is a global event that began in San Francisco in 2005. On this day every year, organizations create temporary public spaces in urban contexts around the world. As a spinoff of this event, the first longterm parklet installation was built in San Francisco in 2010, and there are now over 30 parklets in the city. Veg and the City Parklet Partnership.

Due to the successful (Park)ing Day event at swissnex in 2013, we are investing in a more permanent parklet installation to help further the connection between Switzerland and North America in science, education and art. This parklet is one-of-a-kind; it is the first parklet to ever incorporate event programming into its public space.
2
swissnex Parklet Structure Design 1
The structure is a stage to creatively activate the neighborhood and a frame to showcase innovation. The unique design is source of inspiration.
4 5 2
3
The parklet’s design as an assemblage of cubes and planes aims to ressemble a stage in its neutrality and sophistication. When occupied with content, the design fades allowing our attention to focus on the temporary event hosted by the parklet. The adaptability of the space encourages a creative use of the parklet and allows for a diverse set of events. Creating a striking contrast with the historic buildings that characterize the Jackson Square area, the innovating design brings strong visibility to the parklet. The structure serves both as an invitation to engagement and as a support to explore new ideas.
Key Features 1. Adaptable Canopy
The canopy can be positionned in four distinct ways, allowing the parklet to adapt to different types of events. This flexibility encourages innovative use of the space. The canopy is designed to act as: a roof, a noise barrier, a screen for projections or a physical connection to the main building.
2. Movable Units
4. Lighting
3. Special-use Units
5. Projector
On top of being movable, the parklet units can be adapted to special needs. The units can either be modified to better fit the needs of a special event, or they can simply be replaced by specially designed elements.
The parklet is equipped with a small shelf positioned towards the top of the structure, specially-made to hold a projector. This will enable screenings directly on to swissnex’s building facade, with seating available through the parklet units.
All the colorful units can be moved to better serve the users of the parklet. Principally used for seating, they can provide shelving or tables for groups to gather around. These units are astutely conceived to be space-efficient when stacked into the walls of the parklet.
Certain units and parts of the structure are equipped with lighting. Adding lighting to the parklet gives more opportunities for evening events.
3
swissnex Parklet Programming Scenarios
All parklet programming is free, accessible and open to the public. This new outdoor space allows swissnex to connect the dots between the local community and its global network through active participation in programming. A Historical Reference Point
The historic location of the swissnex office allows for a partnership with local tour groups, such as Foot Tours and San Francisco City Guides, in which the parklet becomes a stop on history tours of Jackson Square. Mark Twain reportedly wrote in the building where swissnex is located today. The seating provided by the parklet and potential coffee and snacks offered by swissnex are a perfect opportunity for a tour to regroup and reenergize mid-way through a lengthy walking excursion. The guide can also spend a few minutes touching on historic places down the street, such as the Belli or Genella building. It will also increase swissnex’s visibility by providing a friendly face with which tourists can associate with Jackson Square, San Francisco and Switzerland.

The Jackson Square neighborhood is known for housing expert architecture, urban planning, art and design firms, and also contains a few well-established bookstores that specialize on these subjects. Bookstores such as William Stout Architectural Books would be great partners to lead discussions or book reviews on a variety of subjects pertaining to their fields of expertise. It also gives swissnex the opportunity to bring in prominent Swiss thinkers in these fields. This will create opportunities to connect to both the neighborhood and the Bay Area through a shared interest in European research and innovation.
