DISCOVER THE PLEDGER WETLANDS on a Community Walk You are invited on a leisurely Community Walk with the Friends of Pledger Wetlands Volunteer Group.

When: Sunday 16 October Time: 10am with a walk for 30-40 mins Where: Starting at the Pledger Wetlands sign on Brookside Drive Coordinator Colin Taylor said that the wetlands area that stretches south along the railway line from the rail interchange, is not well known even amongst Mawson Lakes residents. "For anyone who enjoys a walk, jog, dog exercise or bike ride along a beautiful nature reserve, the Pledger Wetlands is a true gem." Since 2007 the Friends of Pledger Wetlands Group has, under the authority of the City of Salisbury, been revegetating and maintaining a large stretch of the area and has planted in excess of 10,000 seedlings, as well as undertaking regular weed control, mulching and watering. To help develop the area into a true nature park, the Friends have enlisted help from the City of Salisbury, Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges to have bird identification signage installed.

The signs will be officially launched as part of the community walk. Photographs used in the signage were taken mostly in the Pledger Wetlands, by resident Mike Flynn who is a member of the Friends of Pledger Wetlands and photographer for the book Birds of Mawson Lakes. "Mike’s photographs are truely beautiful," said Colin. At the conclusion of the walk, you are invited to join with the Friends for morning tea. Enquiries to Colin Taylor on 0427 616 814.

Encouragement through sponsorship When the cars from this year’s Variety Bash came into Clare, Mawson Lakes Living was at the finish line to greet our guys who drove a Ford LTD in the 9-day fundraising event from Port Lincoln to Clare (photo opposite). The car was covered in sponsor’s logos and I was heartened to see that so many local businesses had financially supported the event which overall raised $2.6 million to aid children in need. Nigella was there too and she gives her account through a dog's eyes on page 28. Mawson Lakes Living likes to support people who have exciting ideas and enthusiasm that will make a better society, bring joy to some, and help to others, so throughout this year the magazine has supported/ sponsored many businesses, local clubs and charities in Mawson Lakes. Some of these include:

Throughout my career I have raised a lot of money via sponsorship for worthy projects, mainly in the Education sector. Now I'm happy to be on the other end, in a position to give something back through sponsorship. have your say...

Positively pink Loved the positively pink issue of MLL in September. All that pink reminds me of a quote from Audrey Hepburn who famously said, "I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles."- Megan Lewis, The Cascades Selling off Mawson Lakes The SA Government is selling off Mawson Lakes. Two sites totalling 1.55 hectares are up for grabs for residential/mixed use development. One site contains 'The Levels' historic homestead overlooking Sir Douglas Mawson Lake. For years I have been asking Renewal SA about this historic homestead and was told it was earmarked for community use. However, whenever anyone contacted Renewal SA seeking to use the homestead for a community event/activity they were told they could not. Is this another one of those underhanded, dodgy deals by the government selling off the State’s valuable community assets? - David, The Cove A dog-awful place My home is in the USA but I am living in Mawson Lakes for a few years and I cannot get over how unfriendly Adelaide is to dogs. I was blocked from taking my perfectly-behaved dog on a leash into a showground to visit an outdoor festival at Willunga; I went to see the Bay to Birdwood and could not enter with a dog; I am barred from eateries even those with outdoor tables. I booked into a motel and they wanted to charge me an extra $25 to have a dog. In the US dogs are respected. We are allowed to travel together on flights and go shopping together without any bother. If a dog is a trouble it is asked to leave, but here the officious security guards jump on you if a dog shows its face and the council dog-catcher punishes you if your dog is walking gently along the footpath off a leash. It’s a dog awful place. I am adding to the growing chorus of voices that broadcast Australia as a dogunfriendly country. - Franklin B Wilson

Fashion parade feedback Thank you for a gorgeous double-page-spread on the Mawson Lakes Fashion Parade in MLL/Sept. I was one of the models and we all had a marvellous time. I bought the coral dress I modelled (pictured) and my boyfriend bought me the faux fur sleeveless jacket for my birthday. The event was an inspired way to bring the community together and to raise money for a worthy cause. Congratulations to all involved. - Olivia Pollard Mr, Ms or Mx I find your editorial comment (MLL/Aug) one-sided and quite over-the-top in policital correctness. The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) group would love you! Being a former educator, haven't you thought of what you're doing to young minds in promoting confusion on gender identity? Why don't you ask all the parents in Mawson Lakes if they would allow their child to play-act as if they were LGBT adults, dress in the school uniform of the opposite sex and use their bathrooms, and be reprimanded for asking if a baby is a boy or a girl - for this is the idea imbedded in the planned "Safe Schools Program". - Vel Flavel, Trinity Green Retirement Village Gender Neutral I was reading your magazine when I was waiting for an appointment and just wanted to say how great it was to read about your commitment to change your pronouns to gender neutral. PS The dog with the purple ears is super fab!! - Adam Duritz Toastmasters This month Mawson Lakes Toastmasters Club will hold its 100th meeting. What an achievement. The club which started in June 2012 helps members develop their communication and leadership skills and attracts residents, university students, business leaders and professionals. - Paul Curtis, President ...continued on page 6

Aldi proposed development Aldi is making a move on Mawson Lakes. They have submitted plans to Salisbury Council to build a 3-story building in the car park outside Target. This is a ridiculous development. I cannot believe that Salisbury Council has approved this application. A very disappointing aspect of the development is the lack of information to the residents plus the absence of consultation with shop owners regarding the application. The carpark will go and spaces that were used for the existing speciality shops, dentist, medical centre etc will be gobbled up by Aldi. Large delivery trucks will block our streets. I am also concerned about the narrow alley-way that will be created behind the lakeside shops - a tremendous security risk. The proposed building is to be 3 levels with the top two levels being apartments. Just what we need; more apartments. If you are concerned about this issue contact our elected representatives on Council, Steve White and Brad Vermeer on 8406 8222 - Lyall Hill Rail danger Rail Safety Week held in August is an annual community awareness week designed to engage the community in safe rail practices. What a joke. Residents in ML have been trying for years to get a safe pedestrian crossing to link Shoalhaven with the rest of ML. A road bridge that rises high over the station and mixes children, cyclists, and pram-pushing mums with heavy traffic is not the solution, hence kids (and adults) dart across the rail line at the interchange. So dangerous. We were promised

A disgrace to the Council, Department of Transport (DPTI) and the local MP, who have achieved nothing in more than 3 years of community lobbying. - Philip Danby, Shoalhaven A wonderful gesture It was our wedding anniversary which we celebrated at Renno Spice Chinese Restaurant in Mawson Lakes. We ordered three courses along with wine, then, to our surprise, two men who had been dining in the restaurant and who had overheard the staff talking about our wedding anniversary, came to our table as they were leaving and told us that they had arranged to pay for our complete meal. We were amazed. There are some wonderful people out there! If the two men involved happen to read this article, please be assured that we are so incredibly thrilled by your generosity. - Shirley & Terry Richards, Trinity Green Retirement Village Planning a new business I’m starting a new business in Mawson Lakes in 2017 and am doing research on the area. In every issue of MLL that I've gathered, I sense a strong level of support for local business. I’m impressed at how passionate and loyal people are to this little magazine. Everyone I talk to tells me they get a copy and that it is a trusted source of information and essential reading. They advise me to advertise my new business in MLL so please tell me how to go about it. - Peter Emeka Ed: For information on advertising and a booking form look at our website or page 35 in this issue.

Business Profile - Building Designer Creative people are more productive when they can work in a quiet, contemplative environment, and Mawson Lakes is just the right space for building designer Gareth Underwood (pictured) who has his office Dennis Underwood & Associates in Technology Park. Gareth has watched Mawson Lakes evolve, firstly when he was a member of the Urban Design Advisory Panel for the City of Salisbury from the late 1990s until 2010 and now as an independent building designer. "Architecture influences and defines a street, a suburb, and ultimately a township. A designer needs to be empathetic to the client, but also to the relationships surrounding a building. That does not mean staying with the old look. I like a modern approach where we are progressive within a framework of practicality. I seek to create environments for people, not just habitats. Well executed innovative architecture is a good investment for everyone." Gareth says that architecture in Mawson

Lakes is generally dull and safe. "Adelaide is not as architecturally progressive as Sydney and Melbourne where art is quickly embraced in all forms of design." Having said that, he admits he does like a lot of the architecture on our UniSA campus which he describes as "exciting and refreshing." Ed

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

FLAT FEET Flat feet is a term commonly used to describe feet which roll in excessively when standing. The rolling in gives the appearance of a flattened arch. Often the feet have an arch when sitting however this flattens on weight bearing.

Nightingale Travel and Tours Serving South Australia for more than 30 years

FLIGHTS

& MORE

Problems: The main significance of flat feet is that the excessive rolling in subjects joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles to increased forces which can result in pain. There are many conditions related to flat feet these include such things as bunions, hammer toes, corns, callus, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, shin pain, knee pain, back pain and hip discomfort. Treatment: Treatment of flat feet is focused on improving foot function and comfort. To identify the cause of pain we perform a biomechanical assessment to check alignment, strength and foot function. We also assess walking patterns and footwear to analyze contributing mechanical factors. The cause of the issue will determine the specific treatment plan, and this may include orthoses to improve function, exercises, footwear or other physical therapy.

Causes: A flat footed appearance is often due to inherited structural factors including bone shape, muscle tightness or weakness, bony alignment and excessive force on the arch of the foot.

the BEST BREAKFAST

in MAWSON LAKES

Visitors say Mawson Lakes is very quiet in the mornings and it’s not easy to find a place to buy breakfast, so MLL scouted around to see who goes where and what's available. Our recommended top spots are The Watershed Cafe and Indulge Dawn til Dusk. Both offer a delicious menu and bright sunrise customer service. See their opening hours opposite. Ed

FOOD REVIEW by Nicole Aspinall Breakfast at the Watershed Overlooking the Greenfields Wetlands, the Watershed Cafe boasts a unique and appealing setting for a lazy weekend breakfast with the family. The expansive deck invites diners outside where you sit surrounded by nature. There are both covered and open air dining options outdoors as well as a cozy cafe inside. The breakfast menu is impressive. Highlights include Artisan Brioche with whole poached pear which you can have served with fresh berries, berry coulis and honey ricotta or caramelised

banana and maple syrup with double cream. If you prefer savoury for breakfast you can't go past the Eggs Benedict for their soft poached free range eggs served atop wilted baby spinach, mushrooms and caramelised onions with a delicious house made hollandaise and a generous serving of your choice of ham, bacon or smoked salmon. If you haven't been, you must. The Watershed is an absolute gem for breakfast lovers.

In My Garden

by Berry

Coastal Native Rosemary (Westringia Fruticosa) grows very well in Mawson Lakes.

Mawson Lakes

Garden Club

Two years ago I planted two plants at 85 Sanctuary Drive Mawson Lakes to create a screen in front of a window. Today they are over a metre in height and bear whitish/lilac flowers from about July to February. They can grow to 2 metres in height and to a width of 1.5 metres. They have small blue green leaves and tolerate salt and salt spray well. They are drought tolerant and grow well in most places from coast to inland and enjoy full sun or part shade. They live well in a vase of water and make a beautiful display. The plants never seem to be affected by pests or diseases. The New Holland Honey eaters enjoy the sap of the flowers. It is so beautiful and peaceful to watch them through the window enjoying a feast. Westringias belong to the same family

Inc.

as mint, rosemary, lavender, sage, lemon balm, marjoram and patchouli. The name 'Rosemary' refers to the appearance of the plant only, as the leaves do not have the familiar Rosemary smell. Unfortunately it is not an edible plant. Sponsored by Mawson Lakes Living

Home Loan Help with Anthony Vancura What’s better: property or shares? It’s a debate as old as time – what’s the better wager? Will borrowing to invest in property or shares reap greater benefits? The reality is there’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer to this question. Property and shares both have their risks and their rewards, and success at either form of investment depends on your attitude as an investor. Are you looking for short-term returns, or are you playing the ‘long game’? What’s your appetite for risk – can you afford to make a loss or are you ready to speculate?

AAA Mortgage Solutions

Suite 5, 32 - 36 Metro Parade, Mawson Lakes As a general comment, wealth is not built by most individuals when ‘timing the market’ – i.e. buying stocks or property at a market low before trying to sell at a market peak within a cycle or two. Timing the market requires a crystal ball, time to watch your markets extensively – and an appetite for risk and swift transactions! Naturally, both the property and share markets are affected by fluctuations in the short term, which can leave risk-averse investors anxious about their assets. By taking a longer-term view – known as time in the market- and observing trends over a substantial period, property or shares bought well can both offer quality returns. Buy well, buy once is the mantra of many savvy share market and property investors. Interested in building either a property or a share portfolio? Contact your broker to discuss lending options that work best for your circumstances.

Come if you dare, ready for a scare Halloween is on Monday 31 October and Mawson Lakes Living is looking forward to opening its door to the kids of Mawson Lakes again this year. Halloween is a time to dress up - the boys rap on my door looking fearsome, and the girls come in an awesome parade of fancy dress, big hats and wild makeup. My gosh, I like to get into the swing of it all myself and dress as the 'Purple Witch'- a friendly witch who gives out treats. In Parkview Drive (the Christmas Street) we get into the mood just because we like to have fun. We’re a kid-friendly, outgoing bunch of neighbours and we festoon our houses with cobwebs, pumpkins, bats and broomsticks. At No 37 Rob and Karen are working on a scary cave where only the brave should venture! Not everyone supports Halloween so stick to houses with a Halloween signature so you know you will be welcome. Linda BAT COUNT: Find and count all the hidden bats throughout the magazine. Answer on page 34.

Walking for Wellbeing

5 STEPS FOR WALKING TO WORK

Friday 7 October is National Walk to Work Day. All employers and employees are encouraged to start walking regularly to improve their health, prevent disease, improve mental condition and enhance general wellbeing. The recommended daily walking goal is 10,000 steps but most Australians on average walk only 7,400. How many steps do you clock up a day? "One of the best ways to improve your health is to build walking into your daily routine," said Christine Hillier who is the organiser of the Mawson Lakes Heart Foundation Walking Group (pictured below). "Our group meets 3 times a week at 8.30am for a one hour walk and we reckon we have the perfect environment here in ML for exercise. (Contact on page 34). Ed

1. If you can't walk all the way to work, use public transport and get off the bus, train, tram or ferry a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way. 2. If you need to drive, try to leave the car at least a kilometre from your destination and walk the rest of the way. 3. Take a walk at lunchtime for at least half an hour. 4. Where possible use the stairs rather than escalators or lifts. 5. If you sit a lot at work, walk around at least once every hour or get up to talk to a colleague instead of sending an email.

I need to get a Grant of Probate of my late father’s Will. How much will it cost for me to apply for the grant?

Meet Ada De Duonni, one of our team of lawyers who has special experience with Wills and estates.

The application fees have recently changed. From 28 February 2016, the Court has moved away from a fixed fee to an asset based application fee structure.

The application fee is calculated on the gross value of the estate. That is, the value of the estate without deduction for debts, encumbrances or funeral expenses.

The cost of applying for a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration will be determined as follows:

The new rules further provide that if the gross value of the estate is less than originally disclosed to the Court, a refund will be paid to the applicant for the difference between the application fee Port Adelaide: 8447 4466 paid and the application fee that should have been Adelaide: 8212 6875 paid if the gross value disclosed was accurate. Gawler: 8522 7160 Similarly, if the gross value of the estate is Visit the website more than originally disclosed to the Court, for more help / advice. the applicant will have www.scammell.com.au

Gross value of deceased estate:

Fee:

$200,000 or less

$750

More than $200,000 but less than or equal $1,500 to $500,000 More than $500,000 but less than or equal $2,000 to $1 million More than $1 million $3,000

to pay the difference to the Court. You don’t always need to apply for a Grant of Probate or for Letters of Administration. Depending on the value of the assets owned by the deceased and how those assets are held, a deceased’s estate may be administered informally.

Noisy cars rumble into town

by Nigella

When we arrived in Clare the main street was bare. It was Saturday afternoon and the shops were closed and there wasn’t a person or dog in sight. Then all of a sudden the town exploded with activity. More than 100 cars came roaring into town; but these were not ordinary cars. I’ve never seen cars like this. They were big, old, cars, covered in outback red dust, plastered with flags and colourful signs and they honked and hooted and rang bells and ambulance sirens. One of the cars was an old ambulance. Mummy pointed out the car that MLL had sponsored. That’s why we were there. The ML car was decorated like a golf course with green grass on the roof (unfortunately no good for a doggie rollaround) golf balls stuck on the windows and golf caddies on the roof - see photo. Out of the ML car stepped Trent Ryan looking pretty rugged after 9 days on dirt roads. He gave mummy a hug and picked me up for a hug too. By now there were people everywhere and lots of dogs. (I always notice the dogs). Kids sat on the curb as the procession rumbled into town and the cars were directed to park on the main street.

28

Weird people dressed like skeletons, monsters brides and tigers got out of the cars and gave out presents. I scored a soft purple ball.

Nigella gets a cuddle from Trent Ryan at the Variety Bash in Clare

All this racket was the Variety Bash coming to the finish at Clare. I wonder if any dogs went along for the ride. I’d love to go on an outback adventure like this but I reckon I’d come back unrecognisable - red dog.

Have you ever considered what dogs must think of us. We come back from the supermarket with the most amazing haul - chicken, pork and a side of cow. They must reckon we’re the greatest hunters on earth! Anne Tyler
