Choosing a representative on Council When a member of the local Council leaves office midway through their term it creates a vacancy that has to be filled with a supplementary election. We have such an election coming up in our Ward this month so this will impact on you. Salisbury Council is made up of eight Wards and each Ward has 2 elected representatives. Mawson Lakes is in the Levels Ward. When one of our representatives resigned at the beginning of this year a supplementary election was needed. I spoke to several candidates for the position and invited them to talk to you through the magazine. Their responses are on pages 8 and 9. If we want good local governance it is up to us to choose the decision-makers on Council, so consider each candidate, give them a call if you wish, and be sure to deliver your postal vote to Council by 8 May.
One of the sweetest days of the year is coming up. Mother’s Day is on 14 May so we asked the mothers of Mawson Lakes how they will be celebrating. Each mother said she would like to be pampered on this lazy Sunday. See their photos inside and if you need a little inspiration for a gift see our Mother's Day Gift Guide for local products and services on page 16. Have you spotted any cute little geckos climbing the walls and windows of your house? Katarina took some macro shots of the geckos in her house and I selected one for Mind Massage on page 20. They have specialised toe pads so they can climb up walls and across glass. These harmless little city-dwelling lizards hide under the bark of trees during the day and come out to catch insects and spiders at night so they are worth having around.

Dog attacks threaten family safety It was awfully upsetting to read that a Jack Russell was attacked and killed by two huskies last month in The Bridges. Our dogs are part of our family and the horror of losing a little loved one under such gross conditions is excruciating and unforgiveable. My little dog was attacked walking around the lake when a large dog held by a small child pulled the child over, got loose and came charging towards my dog. The owners grabbed the child and the dog and disappeared real quick while I was tending my stunned "baby". The answer is not to lock up working and hunting breeds behind fences or in garages in an urban space, they should be in a different environment. One attack and they should be taken off their owners for good. This should get the message across to irresponsible owners. Council needs to toughen up on this issue. This year alone 90 cases of dog attacks have been reported to Salisbury Council. This threatens our family’s safety and is not acceptable. Roberta Knox Artificial Intelligence Technology may be the way of the future (MLL/April mayor's comment) but it is also the way to kill off jobs as robots and automation change the landscape. Predictions are that robots will replace two in every five workers in SA over the next ten years. Workers in the transport, retail and hospitality services are under the most threat, according to industry analyst Professor John Spoehr from Flinder University. He said that artificial intelligence and robots ("droid workers") are also automating sophisticated jobs such as banking and accounting. I'm at TAFE and the Naracoorte TAFE will close next month and be replaced by online courses. What will happen to the employees? DW Too many people On my way to work in Mawson Lakes, I listened to a news report that said figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the population growth of SA is the second lowest in Australia following Tasmania. To me that’s good news. Property developers and business bodies were calling for new ways to increase the population to stimulate the economy but 4

as I crawled along Elder Smith Drive, then couldn’t find a parking space in ML, I thought we already have enough people living here. Traffic congestion is one signal of overcrowding, throw in water shortages, electricity problems, insufficient jobs, and a public school in ML turning families away. Let’s have fewer people than the big states but a better quality of living. Look after the people we have and curtail the greed of property developers and big business. David Graves Free speech eroded I used to think I was just a regular Aussie guy but political correctness, government inaction, and minority group influence has changed all that: • I am white therefore I must be a racist. • I am heterosexual, so now according to gays, that makes me a homophobic. • I went to a private school so I am a privileged urbanist who is an ally of ugly big business. • I am non-union which makes me a traitor to the working classes. • I am a Christian, which according to Muslim literature, makes me an infidel. • I want a plebiscite to express a no vote against same sex marriage so I am xenophobic. • I support closing our borders so that makes me anti-humanitarian. • I value the police and law and order which makes me a right-wing extremist. • I make a joke about another culture so that makes me offensive. • I talk to kids in the playground so that make me a suspect predatory pedophile. How fearful I am to open my mouth. What has happened to fun, freedom and free speech in Australia? Adapted from Mike Williams Carp solution A carp explosion is threatening the waterways of SA as a result of heavy rainfall and a hot summer. The fish stir up the water and the silt suffocates native fish and destroys the health of the water environments. Fishing alone cannot control the numbers. As soon as they are caught on the hook more carp are bred. A female carp lays one million eggs per year. In May last year the federal
Read past copies online at www.mawsonlakesliving.info government announced a plan to release a carp herpes virus by 2018. Maybe then the lakes of Mawson Lakes will return to good health. Chris Vespermann Living in Shearwater We moved to Shearwater in December and have had nothing but noise out the front of our house every single night. People park their cars with music blaring, chatting loudly, giggling and whatever else, then drive off and throw their rubbish out the window. Add to this intrusion the motorised speed boats – at all times of the day. No, 6.30am on a Sunday is not acceptable. We are getting nowhere with the local council. I’d like to know if this annoys other people living in the area. Kirsty at Shearwater Changing face of the North The State Government is turning its focus to the North and is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the region. It has identified areas with the greatest potential for growth as construction and urban renewal, agriculture, defence, mining equipment and technology services, tourism and recreation. The largest injection of money will be spent providing facilities and services for the ageing and the disabled. Knitting and Crochet Club Children who are the victims of domestic violence may be lucky enough to get a knitted headband made by Wendy Harvey to give their mothers for Mother’s Day.
Wendy (standing) helps Chris with a knitting problem
Wendy is an award-winning craftswoman who has started a knitting and crochet club in Mawson Lakes. Her headbands use oddments of bright coloured wool because she says "domestic violence is so ugly that I want to make something pretty for children to give as gifts." Versatility and innovation are a feature of this clever woman who took out several prizes at the 2016 Royal Adelaide Show. In her miniature travel box of Little Treasures (photo below) she put an itsy bitsy pair of crocheted jeans and some tiny dresses and matching hats and bags. She was inspired by a book she bought in Japan on the Art of Amigurumi. "Japanese like little things so I took ideas from this and crocheted a range of cute clothing that was less than 10cm in size and the judges loved it."
"domestic violence is so ugly that I want to make something pretty for children to give as gifts." Wendy who is an active 80-year-old is a life member of the Hand Knitters Guild of SA and is involved in knitting for charity, a pleasure that takes her to craft fairs around Australia.
She moved to Mawson Lakes a few months ago and is happy to share her skills with local ladies and inspire needle workers with ideas, show them where to get free patterns, and if they have dropped a stitch, made a hole or screwed up their needle work in any way, Wendy will tackle the problem. Headbands for Yes, that may mean Mother’s Day unravelling! Ed
Classes are open to advanced or beginners and held at the Mawson Centre on Mondays from 1pm to 3pm during term time. Wendy’s award winning crochet of Little Treasures

Council By-election
Mawson Lakes is in the Levels Ward in the City of Salisbury Council. This Ward also takes in Cavan, Parafield and parts of Pooraka and Parafield Gardens. Due to the resignation of one of our elected representatives on Council, a supplementary election will be necessary to fill the vacancy of Councillor for Levels Ward. Our other representative is Steve White.
You are entitled to vote in an election if you are on the State electoral roll. If you have recently turned 18 or changed your residential or postal address you must complete an electoral enrolment form, available from post offices or online at www.ecsa.sa.gov.au.
The election will be conducted entirely by post with ballot papers being sent out 18 - 24 April 2017. Ballot material must reach the Returning Officer no later than 12 noon on Monday 8 May 2017. Results for the supplementary election will be available early June 2017.
If you have any queries regarding the Council supplementary election for the Levels Ward please contact 8406 8222.
BEAU BRUG FOR COUNCIL
As a candidate who lives, works and went to school locally, I am aware of what is important to residents. When doorknocking I hear that the cost of Council rates is constantly being raised. I will not support an increase to Council rates above inflation.
As a manager of a Mawson Lakes business I can see the suburb is changing but not for the better. We need to grow existing businesses and attract new ones in Mawson Lakes by removing extra costs applied to commercial tenants.
I will work to improve parks, reserves and footpaths. I will work with Government to remove heavy vehicles from Elder Smith Road, upgrade the bridge to multiple lanes and construct a multi-story carpark in Mawson Lakes to address major car parking issues around the interchange. We need infrastructure in line with development, so I will not support development that contributes to existing problems. I will work with the Federal Government to secure a Post Office and with SA Health to control mosquitos. For a young and hard-working representative who will listen and act, please support Beau Brug by Voting 1 before May 8!

KATHRYN TRIPODI FOR COUNCIL
BRAD LANGSHAW FOR COUNCIL
I have served the community from the city to the outback through volunteer emergency services including attending national disasters and working as a community ambulance officer. I’m passionate about representing minority groups, such as multicultural and GLBTIQ communities. As a returned peacekeeper, I understand the notion of pride in where I call home. I have lived in Mawson Lakes since 2007 and seen this community grow, change and become a prominent community in Salisbury. As your representative, I will listen to your issues, meet with you, be approachable and take your issues to Council as required.
Working with you we can make Mawson Lakes into the best place in South Australia to live, with a thriving social culture, economic success, and support for locals to succeed.
We need good representation to Council. You need a counsellor who will stand up and put the issues on the table. Although we have several State Government issues like traffic, access and parking, knowing this will allow me to ensure that they are never forgotten and are the uppermost priorities of my representation of you.
Committed to Community
I was born and raised in the City of Salisbury and I reside here and own a local business Storage 2000 with my husband. We have 2 children.
I am trust worthy, loyal, passionate and believe in getting things done. For the past 10 years, I have dedicated my time to helping many community groups in the North with practical support and major fundraising events, such as Northern Domestic Violence Service, The City of Playford Christmas Carols and Elizabeth Special School. As a candidate for Levels, I will approach my role on Council as I do with all my community work and that is to Listen and Learn and speak and act for those in the community who can’t speak for themselves and address the real needs of the community. I am committed to helping those in any form of disadvantage or vulnerability.
I believe in dignity for all people and give everything I put my hand to my very best shot. I have the runs on the board, I don’t just talk the talk, I walk the walk.
With your support, I will drive Levels Ward forwards, openly, honestly, and more importantly as a local, with a passion and pride for local success.
I believe in service, action and results, where integrity is my currency and character counts.

Meet the new community coordinator Andrew Murray (pictured) is the new Community Development Coordinator of the Mawson Centre. This likeable and energetic young man, appointed by the City of Salisbury, is responsible for the day to day operation of the Mawson Centre. His office is next to the Library. Andrew has a degree in sports development and a working background in community centre management. He was born in England where he met a lovely Adelaide girl who enticed him back to SA. He has been here for 5 years, loves it, and now has an 18-month-old daughter. The Mawson Centre is managed by a committee made up of representatives of the Salisbury Council, the University of South Australia and the Department of Education. Andrew liaises with the other stakeholders to generate community initiatives and encourage community participation by providing activities and space for meetings in the Mawson Centre and the Denison Centre. A look at the Mawson Centre Program for April, May and June shows a lot of exciting things on offer such as quilting, photography, public
speaking, language classes and computer courses. When it comes to health and fitness there’s a choice from pilates, tai chi, yoga, dance and more. Andrew invites anyone with a hobby or interest groups or community-based businesses to talk to him about space and assistance. "We have just started a new group for knitting and crochet (see article page 6). People from surrounding suburbs are most welcome to join in any of our community events." There’s also plenty of things going on for young people in the holidays and after school, including dance classes, library and craft classes, and Andrew’s idea of "Movies at Mawson" in the auditorium is proving popular. You can pick up a printed copy of the program from the Mawson Centre, or go online, or ring Andrew on 8302 8222.

My ex-boyfriend and I exchanged sexual images during our friendship He won’t return my laptop. I’m concerned he’ll publish my photos on a ‘Revenge Porn’ site. How can I recover my laptop?
Firstly, recent changes to S.A. criminal law has meant that a mere threat to share your private intimate images constitutes a criminal offence. Sharing does not need to have actually occurred. You need to report him to the Police if he has threatened you with this. They should have the power to seize your laptop as part of your complaint. Even if your “sexual images” do not depict a sexual act but are images of genitalia or (for females only) bare breasts, they are considered ‘invasive images’ which cannot be shared without your consent. If you do not want to press criminal charges, or if he has not yet committed a criminal
act, you could apply under the Family Law Act for the return of your laptop in addition to other property / financial orders. Your laptop is considered “property” under the Act and the Court has the power to make orders on who should have possession of it.

You can even seek a Court hearing be held without your exboyfriend present on the laptop Port Adelaide: 8447 4466 issue alone, to avoid arousing his suspicion. Not a last resort but a final solution Kevin’s grandfather described us as "the last resort" for his 12 year-old boy. Apart from learning difficulties, Kevin’s background included foetal alcohol syndrome, trauma, attention difficulties, concentration concerns and speech delay. He had been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD and was displaying poor on-task behaviour and not finishing required schoolwork. However, he was an excellent footballer and loved playing for his school. Kevin was initially difficult to engage until the topic of sport was mentioned. He understood how all the positions in the team had a part to play and when they all communicated with each other efficiently they were able to score goals, just like the different parts of his brain. Treatment and results The Low Energy Neurofeedback System(LENS) was used to initially create a "brain map" displaying the electrical activity in Kevin’s brain and telling him his brain was working very hard and was so overactive that it was disturbing his ability to focus and concentrate. At the same time it was not operating flexibly, so he could not easily adjust to new situations. After about two treatment sessions, Kevin’s grandfather reported that Kevin was running faster and "thinking more" on the football field and was selected for interschool sports. His teacher noticed improved concentration and he received an award for reading. He is more relaxed, happier and confident. We don’t have to be a last resort. We can be the solution. To find out more about LENS look on our website then talk with Tony, a LENS provider for more than twenty years. Performance Management Psychologists Maria and Tony

I want to thank each and every person who gives their time to support a community activity. Whether it’s helping out at a local sports club or school, spending time with those needing assistance, or lending a hand to keep our environment in good shape: you are doing work that is valued and critical to the wellbeing of our society. Recently I contacted over 50 community organisations urging them to consider nominating volunteers for this year’s recognition program. This is one small way we can show our appreciation each year for their selfless dedication. On a sadder note, this will be my final year representing the people of Mawson Lakes inwww.carpetcourt.com.au Parliament. From the next State election on 17 March 2018, the Electoral Districts Boundaries Commission has determined Mawson Lakes will no longer be in my electorate of Port Adelaide, and will be moving into the electorate of Playford. The Electoral Commission of South Australia will update your records and prepare maps and materials to ensure you are informed of these changes in the lead up to the next election. Thank you for your support in the past, and of course I will continue to represent you in Parliament until March next year. Should you require any assistance with state matters please do not hesitate to call my office on 8241 0300.

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards
Hammer Toes What is a hammer toe? A toe, (usually the second) which is abnormally bent at the middle joint and points down in the shape of a V is called a hammer toe. Who gets hammer toes? The hammer toe deformity is a mechanical problem primarily caused by the structure and function of the foot. They are more common in women than men, and often seen in people with bunions. Hammer toes can also be caused by injury, and tight, narrow footwear. Hammer toes are also common in people with nerve damage such as diabetes or stroke. Problems caused by hammer toes. Because of the shape of the toe, it can be painful in shoes which impacts on mobility. Often hard skin or corns develop on the top of the joint and end of the toe which can be painful to walk on. It can also cause pain under the ball of the foot. The toe nail can also thicken due to increased pressure which is uncomfortable.

Treatment. Wearing shoes with adequate width and length will avoid squashing toes improving foot comfort. Shoes with a deep toe area will prevent the toe rubbing on the shoe thus improving comfort. Regular removal of hard skin and thinning the nail will maintain comfort. Pressure relieving padding can also dramatically reduce pain. If the toe is stiff and pain affects movement, surgery may be an option. Orthotics can be used to improve foot function and mobility. So if you have a bent toe that is causing you pain and inhibiting your lifestyle call us on 8262 9999 for an appointment.

We will perform an airway assessment at your general check-up or sleep consultation. If you snore or are aware of sleep apnoea type symptoms you can request a sleep consultation to discuss diagnosis and treatment options. We can provide a referral to an accredited general practitioner or sleep study centre for a sleep study. This is assessed by a Sleep Physician and assessment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea can be determined. Mandibular advancement splint or CPAP machine may be recommended. Mandibular Advancement Splints Mandibular advancement splints (MAS) are mouth splints worn in the mouth during sleep used for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea. In the Garden - Mandavilla Vines
Mandavillas are at their best at this time of year twining their flowering vines up fences, trellises and clinging to poles in Mawson Lakes.
It winds its way up a bare wooden veranda post and I pinch off the ends to keep it compact. A watering of high phosphorous water-soluble fertiliser every couple of weeks keeps it flowering for several months.
Their vigorous growth can transform a bare fence into a frieze of foliage and flowers in a variety of colours, including white, pale pink, dark pink and strong red. A beautiful soft pink Mandavilla has been growing in a large pot in my front garden for many years and every year it delights.

Mandavillas like warm sunny days and not too much water. As the nights get cool and dew forms they may be affected by mildew. A spray with Eco-Oil will cover the leaves with an oily coat that dispels the mildew infection; or you can do nothing and they will grow out of the fungal problem in spring. Ed

NAPLAN by Preet This month, thousands of Aussie kids will be sitting down to complete the NAPLAN test. My sister who is in Year 3 will be one of them. NAPLAN stands for National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy. In previous years, there were many debates on how the results were being used. The My School website ranks schools in order from the best NAPLAN results to the worst. Many say that it’s unfair as NAPLAN was designed to assess individual children and not whole schools. Now NAPLAN is going online as a trial in 2017. The government says that this will create a new learning environment that is more engaging than the previous pen and paper tests. They also say that the results will come in much faster taking weeks instead of months. They have been giving out sample tests and they say it’s been working
really well. On the other hand, many adults and even children disagree. Having NAPLAN online means that there will definitely be problems concerning technical issues. Teachers are also concerned that there will not be enough laptops, computers, surfaces and other resources for the school to use as more than one or two classes will be using them at a time. I disagree with the online NAPLAN tests not only because of technical problems but the previous pen and paper tests helped children prepare for the scholarship tests and high school tests that they would have to experience sooner or later. The pen and paper tests provided a method similar to these tests and helps children get used to them. The NAPLAN tests take place in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. - Preet, Year 6 ! STOP PRESS The Federal Government has just announced that online NAPLAN has been abandoned due to technical problems. It's back to pen and paper in 2017. Ed

Evil vs Inspiration
International Costume Puzzle
A 13-year-old friend of mine who loves her horse is having nightmares after seeing Beauty and the Beast. Why is it that modern filmmakers think they need fear and violence to make a movie exciting for kids. Time enough as they grow older to witness the evil side of life, no need when they are young, hence I will not be taking my young friends to see Beauty and the Beast. While parts of the movie were cute and romantic, the prolonged scenes with the vicious wolves chasing the white horse were awful, and the villan's violence throughout was ugly. Instead, let me recommend a glorious movie that leaves you with a warm glow and a broader view about a part of the world rarely seen. The Eagle Huntress takes us to Mongolia and shows us a way of life radically different from our own, yet it illustrates the power of positive parenting and the successes that children who are brought up believing in themselves can have. This message makes the film relevant for parents as well as young viewers. It’s a beautiful and gentle film (except for a sacrificial killing of a goat and the hunting of a fox), about a young girl in a man’s world who learns to catch eagles, train them to hunt, then release them seven years later to breed in the wild. It's an uplifting story of achievement that will resonate with teenage girls around the world - whether eagles are their thing or not! The simple, family-friendly movie is rich in universal themes we can all appreciate - female empowerment, a father daughter bond, striving to reach a goal, and the stunning beauty of the natural world. The movie is subtitled in large print so is suitable for young readers and up. Ed

Thistle Attack
by Nigella
When we go out walking in Mawson Lakes I usually bring home a few burrs, particularly in the dry season. I drag these out of my coat with my teeth or mummy unravels them and brushes them out. But when I was over on the Eyre Peninsular last month I got caught up in some nasty desert weeds, and the biggest, meanest thistles I have ever seen latched onto me. Mummy was gathering brochures at the information centre at Elliston so I took a little stroll outside and I came back with three long grass stalks sticking out of my face. Mummy tried to tease them out but these were no Mawson Lakes burrs. These were vicious desert seed pods with fine sharp spines that were ravelling the silky hairs on my face with my every movement. Quick action was needed. An emergency operation. There were three long thistles, one attached to my cheek, one under my eye and one in my ear and they were huge - as long and fat as a little finger and as sharp as a razor.
First of all we needed an operating table so Mummy found one of those silver metal picnic tables in the shade. Next some operating tools. She dived into the first aid kit and took out a pair of thin, sharp scissors. She put on her strong reading glasses. Oh, this didn’t look good! She sat me on the table and explained what was going to happen and how I needed to be very, very still. She started to cut away at the burrs and discoverd they were full of tight black seeds. Even as she worked the seeds were spilling out and the claws were grabbing hairs and boring deeper like a screwdriver. The most delicate part of the operation was to remove the thistle just under my eye so I put my head on our friend’s knee and he gently covered my eye to keep me calm. Every fine silky hair that was bound to the claws had to be cut away. It took over an hour and mummy kept reassuring me with soothing words so I knew I would be OK. In the end I surfaced with half my ear feathers gone and two big hair-less patches on my face, but not a single nick in my skin. Clever mummy. She said that because I stayed so still for so long we didn't need to go to the vet. What a relief that was, but, oh, it really messed up my hairdo!
