A lot to love about winter There’s a lot to love about winter. It’s cosy. The light is soft and moody. The landscape changes from sunburnt cream to rich green as the parks and countryside soak up the winter rain. Dry Creek becomes a misnomer when the water comes gushing from the Hills and our sluggish watercourse bursts its banks and closes the roads. Nigella and I like to watch the long-legged birds foraging for worms in the muddy pools created by the flooding water. No sooner do we fire up for winter than the days begin to get longer after 21 June. This is the winter solstice, or the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere. From now on daylight gradually increases bringing us towards spring. In the North there's a lot of talk about training for

new jobs and future-proofing careers. "The future will be a lot tougher than the past," according to John Driehuis. Read his solution to survival on page 8. Talking of jobs, I thought you might like the following job joke. A man hopped into a taxi and sat in the back seat. From behind he tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him something. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, veered toward a bus, swerved onto the footpath and stopped just short of a shop window. For a moment the driver sat motionless and drew deep breaths, then he turned to the passenger and said, "Hey mister don’t ever do that again, you scared the daylights out of me. I’ve just changed jobs and today is my first day as a taxi driver. I’ve been driving a hearse for the last 20 years."

Beautiful thoughts Thank you Mawson Lakes Living for giving my kids ideas on how to celebrate Mother’s Day. My two young boys (with dad’s help) bought all their presents from the Mother’s Day Shopping Guide in the centrefold. They read what other kids were doing for their mums and did the same thing, so I got breakfast in bed and a bubble bath surrounded by scented candles. Then they took me out to lunch. I had a gorgeous day. The May issue was full of beautiful thoughts and I loved the bright pink cover. Lucy Ostrevor

just can’t untangle the burr, try crushing it with pliers. Crushing the burr and breaking it into tiny pieces can make it easy to then pick or brush out. Burrs are easier to get out when my coat is wet or some cooking oil has been rubbed around the burr. Sometimes burrs get between my paw pads and this is really painful. Some speargrasses with barbed spikelets catch on my coat and keep migrating forward like the story you told in MLL. Speargrass is mean and can make its way into ears, eyes, nose and organs of dogs. This is mighty dangerous. Tikka the country collie

Bad burrs Hi Nigella, I could really relate to your article on burrs last month. I know burrs. Although we have a manicured lawn in front of our house, we’re otherwise surrounded by bushland and that includes some real thorny problems. I have a dense coat with feathers and a super bushy tail that’s just perfect for snagging on all things thorny. The best method to remove burrs is for your owner to firstly try to detangle the surrounding hair with fingers and comb, but, if he

Savage Dogs There are houses in Mawson Lakes that I am afraid to walk past with my baby in a pram and my dog on a leash because loud, angry dogs live behind these fences or are shut away in garages. As we go past they bash violently at their fence and gates and behave in a threatening way and if one of these dogs got out and went for us I fear we would be mince meat. This is intimidation and it should be illegal to have dogs confined like this in city communities. Juanita Serokos

CONGRATULATIONS to Beau Brug on being elected as the representative for the Levels Ward on the City of Salisbury Council in the recent by-election. He sends this message. It is an honour and a privilege for me to be elected. The City of Salisbury and Levels Ward are very special to me and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to my election. Over the last few months, I have doorknocked thousands of residents and businesses and spoken to hundreds of people. Residents raised with me various issues and complaints, but although they recognize there is much Council can do to improve the services to them, they are proud of where they come from and where they live. Many residents of Mawson Lakes commented that ML has become run down since Delfin handed over to Council. Their concerns relate to their belief that Council has not

4

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 120 - June 2017

maintained the quality that Delfin provided. They point to a lack of infrastructure in line with growing development, a clear lack of parking, a decrease in community events and culture, broken fountains in essentially every lake, park and reserve. Small roads that do not allow for the significant population growth as the suburb has ballooned. Roads of critical need are Elder Smith Road which requires funding from all levels of government and should be at the forefront of Council lobbying efforts especially in the lead up to the coming State election. Essentially, the feedback from ML residents is that they pay some of the highest rates in the City of Salisbury, indeed in SA – but are not getting the services they require and pay for. Please contact me with any concerns at bbrugg@salisbury.sa.gov.au or 0430 188 175

Past issues can be found online at www.mawsonlakesliving.info Dumped! I see them by the creek, in the by-lanes behind apartment blocks, or just standing by a street corner. Before you jump to any conclusions as to what I am referring to, it’s the humble shopping trolley. Mawson Lakes is an idyllic and clean suburb but these shopping trolleys lying strewn around is an eyesore and spells laziness. We, as civic citizens of this suburb should collectively make an effort to stop this practice. We don’t want Woolies or Target to impose restrictions, so the effort should start with each one of us, it’s our suburb and keeping it clean, safe and tidy should be our priority. Andrew Power Beauty treatment I saw in last month’s MLL that a new beauty and slimming salon - Jenae’s Beauty and Slimming has opened in Mawson Lakes so I went along to try it out. Just want to let you know that I had the best facial I’ve ever had from a professional and generous lady. Sally

Online NAPLAN abandoned Preet was on the mark when she pointed out the problems with online Naplan testing in schools (MLL/May). It’s good to see such critical thinking in one so young. All Australian states and territories have abandoned the trial of online NAPLAN citing technical unreliability. As a school leader I like the idea of online testing but we need to get it right before we roll it out. We don’t want another census debacle. 10th Anniversary The Pledger Wetlands is a beautiful stretch of parkland along the railway line behind Shearwater and Trinity Green. The development and maintenance of the area is solely undertaken by the Friends of Pledger Wetlands with supplies provided by the City of Salisbury and with the support of Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges. In June Friends of Pledger Wetlands will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a lunchtime get together on Sunday June 4th. For further details contact Colin Taylor 0427 616 814. Revenge Porn Articles in MLL are always so up-to-date and relevant. I particularly like the columns by professionals. The page last month (MLL/May) by the lawyer on revenge porn hit a personal note with me. I was caught up in a case of revenge porn when I was 16 and was horrified to discover naked pictures of myself on international websites with my name, school and descriptions of exaggerated sexual behaviour. My girlfriends and I were pressured to send 'naughty pics' of ourselves to our boyfriends to show we were 'chilled, fun-loving girls'. We did it for a giggle. Later my ex-boyfriend turned spiteful and posted the pics on porn sites. Explicit sexual material is growing online at an alarming rate so if this happens to you contact the Office of eSafety, and be careful what you put on social media. Jani, Cascades Dumping in ML Just up the street from me in The Strand someone has dumped a dirty old couch and two big armchairs on the footpath. This displays a total disregard for the suburb and its residents. It costs millions of dollars of ratepayer's money to clean up dumped rubbish. Under new laws, hefty fines and jail sentences can be given out for anything from throwing away a lit cigarette butt to dumping furniture, paint, building materials and asbestos etc. So if you see someone dumping rubbish take a photograph, and better still, a vehicle numberplate, and send it to Council (city@salisbury.sa.gov.au) with the details. No need to confront the bogans, just silently photograph them. Harry, The Strand

Correction The heading for the article in MLL/May from Brain Solutions+ on LENS should have been "A last resort? - a case study." MLL apologises to anyone who was distressed by the published heading. Ed Who pays? We have just caste a vote in the supplementary election for a new representative for the Levels Ward because Brad Vermeer opted out of his position to take up a job in the Northern Territory. A newspaper report said the byelection cost council $33,000. Surely if an elected representative leaves the post they should pay the cost of replacement, not the ratepayers. Norma Stokes Building community We saw the ad in MLL for Movies at Mawson and went along. Had a great time, met new people and liked the free goodie bags. Thanks to Andrew Murray, (our new community coordinator) for organising the event. We would like to see more community activities like this in the Mawson Centre. Mary and kids Driverless trucks steal jobs I am sitting in my home in Mawson Lakes wondering how I am going to pay the bills now that I am out of a job. I worked for many years as a haul truck driver in the outback mining industry but when the company brought in a fleet of driverless trucks they shifted the workers out declaring, "the autonomous trucks can run 24 hours day, 365 days a year, without a driver who needs bathroom and lunch breaks." Great for company profits but devastating for hardworking employees. The comment in MLL/April on automation rings true when it says that jobs are being replaced by smart machines. Steve the truckie

Girls on a mission Abandoned children and orphans living in poverty in Kenya will this month welcome two Mawson Lakes residents who are members of a school mission to Africa. Ashley Vasey and Alison Wilkins who are both in Year 11 at Tyndale Christian School will spend three weeks of their holidays with their classmates helping with hands-on projects such as house painting, construction, socialising with children, helping with homework and setting up income-generating projects.

FLAG MATCH-UP Match the traditional costume to the country's flag

Ashley said they can take a few gifts in their luggage and the focus this year is on stationery. "I'm allowing space for board games, pencils and pens and vitamin gummies which are a favourite with the children." And when the girls depart they can leave their surplus clothing behind if they wish.

3

To pay their travel and living expenses the girls have been working part-time. In addition they each have to raise $1000.

4

Mawson Lakes Living is a supporting sponsor because a mission like this gives our young people an appreciation of the challenges facing third world countries and shows ways in which individuals can make a difference in the world.

Victims of Crime Compensation – when am I eligible and how do I make a claim?

People who fall victim to an offence such as an assault, a sexual assault, or a myriad of other offences may be eligible to receive compensation from a government funded scheme under the Victims of Crime Act, 2001. In order to be eligible you must have sustained an injury, whether that be physical or psychological, and you must seek treatment from a GP, specialist or any other recognised professional. If the only damage caused was to your property or the offences are along the lines of a property damage or trespass on property, you will not be eligible for Victims of Crime Compensation.

sustained a compensable injury, the government solicitor must firstly be satisfied there is sufficient proof that the offence was committed. If the offender was found guilty or pleaded guilty, you will automatically be eligible to apply for victims of crime compensation, as the offence(s) are already regarded as proven. However, if the offender is unknown or cannot be located and brought to justice, your solicitor will need to persuade the government solicitor that there is sufficient proof that the offence was committed.

Defence Institute established in Mawson Lakes SAAB in Mawson Lakes, in partnership with the University of South Australia, will undergo a $40 million dollar expansion of its Mawson Lakes headquarters to house a new Defence Institute. The global technology company, with a workforce of 300, will build a third wing over the next two years and add several hundred employees to its workforce in Mawson Lakes. The SAAB/UniSA Defence Institute is in close proximity to UniSA's Mawson Lakes campus which has the university's Schools of Engineering, Information Technology and Mathematics and its Future Industries Institute. The Defence Institute will educate and train the workforce required to deliver future defence industry projects. Students studying engineering, IT and a variety of other STEM-based degree programs will be able to undertake real world projects at SAAB.

The partnership will also see UniSA researchers and SAAB engineers conduct joint research on new technology and current industry requirements. The partners will work with SAAB to redevelop the Masters in Military Systems Integration.

The Institute will educate and train the workforce required to deliver future defence industry projects. At the launch of the deal in Mawson Lakes last month the Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said the Defence Institute will develop a source of sustainable Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) university graduates by immersing them in real world problems and situations to bring academia into the heart of industry. Face of families in SA New data from the recent Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows the population has changed dramatically since the first census was taken in 2011. Then, the typical Australian was a 24-yearold male. Nowadays, women outnumber men and our population is ageing. ABS data shows that the 'average' South Australian is a woman who was born in Australia, has English ancestry, speaks English at home and has completed Year 12, but there are plenty of local differences - for example, an average person from NSW, Victoria and WA is likely to have at least one parent who was born overseas. This is likely to be the case in Mawson Lakes which is a diverse multicultural community with a high proportion of young families. The data shows that age varies across the states. While Tasmania comes in with the oldest average age of 42, SA comes in second with an age of 40. This is one year older than the average age in 2011 which was 39.

Miffy (40) with Amelie (4) and husban d Bruno Lanceleaux

SA is one of the smallest states and because it does not have the same growth economies as the larger states its population is more stable and therefore older. The data reveals that the typical woman is married with 2 children. The family owns 2 motor vehicles and lives in a three-bedroom house. Most Australians do not own their own house outright, instead, the majority have a mortgage because of rising house prices. The typical woman does between 5 and 14 hours of housework per week.

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

Footwear As a podiatrist I spend a considerable amount of time educating people on good footwear choices. Whilst shoes are a fashion accessory it is important to remember that they can have a considerable impact on foot comfort and general mobility and also your long term foot health. Studies show that a 2.5cm (one inch) heel can increase the pressure under the ball of the foot by 22%. Increasing the heel height increases pressure and can contribute to such problems as bunions, hammertoes, Achilles tendon issues, stress fractures and callus and corn production. In addition to the potential foot problems, abnormal foot position caused by high heeled shoes can have flow on effects on general posture, hip and back alignment and function and alter walking patterns. When choosing a shoe there are some key points to consider;

Invisalign accredited dentists

From the Dentist By Dr Emilija Ports

It’s no secret that fear of the dentist is a very real problem for many people causing you to delay your important dental checkup, or leaving that tooth that’s giving you agony. According to a study by Jason Armfield, approximately 21% of Australian adults were moderately to extremely afraid of going to the dentist. However the fear is largely based on problems of the past. There’s no need to fear the modern dentist if you find yourself a good one. Modern dentists are specially trained in handling fearful patients. A variety of methods and treatments are available to reduce pain and fear in patients. A good dentist understands the reasons behind your fears and will work through them with you. At Mawson Lakes Dental we will explain what you will feel, frequently ask permission to continue, let you know that you can stop the procedure at any time that you feel uncomfortable and make time for breaks. There have been many advancements in the technology and procedures used in modern dentistry to reduce pain and discomfort for patients. Some procedures no longer require needles for anesthesia, strong numbing gels can be used and sedation is an option to make any procedure more comfortable. If you have any fears, just let us know so that we can address them. Book that visit now before you let a minor problem become a major one!

Roaming cats Does your cat have clandestine adventures at night? In a world first study called "Cat Tracker” researchers at Mawson Lakes UniSA have discovered that many domestic cats take a stroll at night, often unbeknown to their owners who think they are are fast asleep indoors. Using global positioning devices (GPS) fitted to more than 400 suburban pets, the data was superimposed on aerial maps creating a series of yellow lines to show each cat’s movements. Victoria Fielding was shocked by the results for her cat because she was sure her 15-yearold pet never left home. "She seems to have a secret life that we don’t know about.”

The study revealed that the home-ranges of the cats was from 0.07 to 31.13 hectares, and the median home-range was 1.04 hectares, approximately half of the playing surface at the Adelaide Oval, or eight Olympic-sized swimming pools. To read more about the cat tracker results go to www.discoverycircle.org.au

KID'S PAGE Unleashing student creativity by Preet, Year 6 It’s that time of the year again for the SASTA Oliphant Science Awards. This is a special competition held at schools in South Australia that was started in 1981, to honour the great Australian Physicist "Sir Mark Oliphant". It has now become SA’s biggest science competition for students from Reception to Year 12. There are 9 categories in the awards, Computer Programming & Robotics, Crystal Investigation, Games, Models & Inventions, Multimedia, Photography, Posters, Science Writing and Scientific Inquiry. Last year, there were around 2100 projects!

Science awards are held to spark an interest in science. While having some fun along the way, these types of challenges persuade children to look at how science affects every-day life and enable them to report on scientific investigations, explore their talent and creativity. It also helps to develop their knowledge and understanding in science. And after the projects are judged the display hall is open to everyone to go and see what young people are doing in Science. Register before the 22nd of June. See the video at www.oliphantscienceawards.com.au I hope that many young people will enter this year and show what young minds can create.

Doggie p-mail

by Nigella

Whenever my friend Muffin walks past my house he leaves a message on the grass to tell me he's been by. When I go outside I pick up his e-mail, or should I say p-mail, and I can tell how long ago he passed. I read the little love message he left and I reply with a few drops on top so he knows I love him too.

Some smells are complex and it takes me a while to unravel the chemical markers and pheromones in a new dog’s pee. Mummy gets impatient if I linger too long going up and down a single blade of grass or a pole or fence but there’s a lot of information to gather.

Then I like to go to new places and pick up other smelly gossip. With a calculating sniff I can tell if the pee belongs to a male or female dog, the age, general health, how tall, and even the stress level of the piddler. Here I am (below) in Wallaroo checking out the local p-mail and leaving my own calling card.

Some little dogs have to work really hard to leave their p-mail in the right place. Mummy and I laugh at the acrobatic ability of little dogs who stand on their front legs and adjust their rear end to squirt a yellow stream as high as a German Shepherd. They want to overwork the scent of a big dog and they don’t let short legs stop them sending a reply.

Some p-mails are sweet and just leave a good morning message like, "Hi, I’m out and about", but others are possessive or aggressive.

Aggressive dogs mark their territory with strong scent that says: "Don’t come near my place or I will eat you!" I stay clear of these posts. Others say: "This P-mail is a vital form of P-mail is a vital calling card between is my patch and I’m letting communication between dogs. Going for a walk and reading you know it." That’s OK. I lift dogs, some of it sweet, and replying to all the p-mails keeps my leg on top of theirs and some not so nice, but say: "Hey this is communal every one is individual. me endlessly entertained. property and I’m here too." Going for a walk and reading and replying to all the p-mails keeps me Then there's girl dog's pee that says: "I’m a bitch endlessly entertained. In Mawson Lakes I know looking for a hook-up, follow the trail and find nearly every dog’s signature - there’s Roxy and me." This is doggie dating p-mail. Lexy and Bella and Monty . . .
