EDITOR'S LETTER

Although we are only two issues in, if it’s one thing I’m sure about, writing the Editor’s Letter is the most challenging part. In a perfect world, I’d decide to rave about memories of a lavish vacation to the Cayman Islands or, a summer trip to Paris inspiring the editorials within these pages. However, aside from an enjoyable trip to Howard University’s homecoming, I attended years ago, all my traveling as an adult has been between Buffalo, NY to New York City preparing for my relocation to Harlem, which I now call home.

Photographer: Jennifer Jean-Pierre As this issue came together, it was these trips from my first home to my now humble abode that I used as a guiding light for the fashion of this Summer season. Whether flying here for a day of market appointments or making Manhattan home for the duration of NYFW, I knew that New Yok City was a place where I would see the latest runway looks pounding the pavement. The sky-high buildings were the backdrop for the vision of women in dresses like the yellow Tibi structured pleated hem dress on page 10. The overcrowded sidewalks served as the canvas for guys ripping and running around uptown just to complete errands in full looks of designer activewear like the Kappa separates on page 20. New York was my haven for high fashion and those memories were the push to create this Summer issue. I must send a big thank you for the love and support shown to our debut issue, including Essence Magazine who featured us on their webpage. I also would like to welcome our new Editorial Director, Bryant DeBerry and our Copy Editor, Kimberly Denise. Now, it brings me great pleasure to share with you our double cover Summer issue of KOLOR Magazine featuring Queen Onyemaechi and Johnathan Hurtado. In the same way I am inspired by the people and the fashion in NYC may this issue be an inspiration to you. With love and respect, Nigel Isaiah

NATASHA ZINKO

The unveiling of Pre-Fall collections, to both press and the sales floors (whether digitally or physically) falls nowhere near Valentine's Day or Sweetest Day, but the theme of love flowed throughout Natasha Zinko's summer offerings. "I'm in love" are the words inscribed on Russian pussy-willow blouses and wide leg trousers. Pink and purple hues added pops of passion to oversized suit separates and knits layered over tracksuits and clavicle bearing dresses were equally feminine and flirty as they were grim and grungy. @natashazinko

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Pre-Fa

In our best Adele Givens voice, the Christian Siriano woman is "such a f*****g lady". Inspired by old photos of his mother, Siriano's Pre-Fall line up features bold stripes, black sequins, vegan leather, denim dresses and separates elevated with exposed stitching. The collection also offered red carpet options for his extensive celebrity clientele. Though the color palette is muted in comparison to his Spring 2018 collection, fans of the brand from Janet Mock and Danielle Brooks to Leslie Jones and Cardi B would all flock towards and look equally stunning in the black one sleeve gown with the thigh-high slit or the brands signature ruffled sleeves gowns. @csiriano 8

THOM BROWNE

You can count on a Thom Browne collection to put some "prep" in your step. Yes, his shows can be a spectacle (see his Little Mermaid inspired SS18 collection or the larger than life suiting from his AW17 menswear collection) but in the midst of the fashion chaos are impeccable sportswear seperates. From look 1 to 33 Browne's Pre-Fall offerings read like perfect daily uniforms with standouts including denim sets with shearling lapels, school girl appropriate pleated skirts, and outerwear that fits like it was made-tomeasure. @thombrowneny

all 2018

Frederick Anderson designs with women in mind and in New York City, that design thought process is essential as stylish ladies are not only looking for a wardrobe to carry them from day to night. Some want clothes that will help them tread the fine line of blending in and standing out whether they are in the Upper East Side or Downtown Brooklyn. Anderson's mixed-prints, fringed hem dresses and delicate lace separates can do just that. To keep things current, luxe track pants and athleisure detailing on outerwear kept the ladylike lineup youthful and fresh. @federickanderson_designer

When it comes to brows the general rule is to keep it as natural as possible. To achieve this, for some it may not require any shaping at all. For others, to help tame an unruly brow the answer can be as simple as threading- a technique that allows for more control and precision by following the natural line of growth. If you want to give your brows a boost, we recommend using a natural coconut, olive, or castor oil to provide you with shapely eyebrows that have fullness and strength.

STYLED

&PROFILED

The Duchess with a royal sense of style!

For me, Michelle Obama was an end of an era I thought we'd never see again. A Black women who, with style and grace stepped into the shoes of being a poster woman for fashion. Setting the tone during 2008's election night when Barack Obama was announced as the President of the United States in a scoop neck Spring 2009 Narciso Rodriguez black and red sleeveless dress, the Harvard Law School graduate was a new face -or the first face for my lifetime-- of what it meant to be an overnight style icon. Upon her departure from the White House and the spotlight (by choice) I wondered if we would see @meghan_markle 16

another woman, in general, fill Ms.Obama's shoes. Someone who could represent designers like Tracy Reese and Naeem Khan in the same manner that Kim Kardashian puts on for Yeezy or Off-White, especially since the current First Lady of the United States isn't receiving tons of coverage for donning the latest fashions. Along came Meghan Markle. In the blink of an eye, the California born actress became the Duchess of Sussex, marrying Prince Harry in a Givenchy dress designed by Claire Waight Keller, the first female Artistic Director at the French fashion house. Just like that, the unfillable shoes were filled, fitting like a glass slipper on Markle's foot. Following up her wedding dress in a sleeveless Stella McCartney --another wedding day moment--, wrap dresses by Oscar de la Renta, and two-piece Carolina Herrera set the fashion industry found their new everyday woman style icon. While it's still early in her style journey, the big luxury shoes she's walking in has yet to be documented in its entirety. However, we can always wonder. Wonder if as a black woman if she'll support designers of color who create royal family worthy attire. Wonder if as an American born citizen will American fashion designers have a new way to penetrate the international market with their clothes on The Dutchess of Sussex's back. Time will only tell if she will be the fashionista I (and let's be honest, the fashion industry) want and need her to be, but it's good to see another black woman getting a go at inking her name into the style icon books.

Then and Now: Your Ultimate Guide to HipHop’s Love of Denim

The universally beloved twill cotton fabric found in closets across the globe has and continues to be an essential bridge (if you will) connecting fashion to Hip-Hop. In the 90’s and early 2000’s, the “baggy” jeans that your favorite rapper rocked with a “tall tee” and a fitted cap to match were all the rage. Denim sagging down to the knees so the extra long shirt wouldn’t cover the embroidery and adornments on the jeans, though controversial, was a look that was equally embraced and rejected. Or maybe you were dripping in complete denim looks from brands such as Platinum FUBU, Akademiks, Iceberg, and Calvin Klein. Don’t let us forget about the original curve friendly brand, Apple Bottoms which the one and only Oprah cosigned.Yes, Hip-Hop loves denim. So let’s take a look back at some of the denim brands that paved the way for our denim obsession today and the music that welcomed them.

Marithé + Francois Girbaud

"Know Yourself"-Drake

Founded in 1972 by stylist François Girbaud and Marithé Bachellerie, Marithé + François Girbaud is a France based clothing brand that was widely popular in the 90s and early 2000s. The duo pride themselves on being at the forefront of innovation when it comes to cuts and fabrics on clothing and jeans. Currently, the two launched a new line through their M+F Line, Mad Lane. You can follow them on Instagram at @girbaud_official.

David Neville and Marcus Wainwright have built quite the following with Rag & Bone. Since 2002 the New York-based brand has honed their skills as a premier ready-to-wear and denim brand for both men and women. Rag & Bone has hundreds of stores around the world. The creatives behind the brand have recieved numerous CFDA Award nominations and wins. Follow Rag & Bone on Instagram @ragandbone.

Filth Mart Jeans

"I Just Wanna Love U (Give It To Me)"- Jay Z

Rag & Bone Jeans "No Flex Zone (Remix)" - Nicki Minaj

Filth Mart got its start in New York City in 1997 by vintage curator Mike Sportes and actress Drea DeMatteo. Their success stemmed from custom vintage pieces that were so hot Jay-Z had to rap about them. Today the brand operates on the west coast where they continue to curate and customize vintage finds for vintage lovers. Stay up to date with Filth Mart @filthmart on Instagram.

Before there was Fashion Nova to cater to the needs of curves Apple Bottoms, the denim brand founded by rapper Nelly was coveted by women everywhere. With the "Country Grammar" rapper at the helm of the line, hip-hop particularly embraced the jeans and the brand became one of the most popular denim brands in the 2000s. Oprah even featured the now-defunct denim line as one of her favorite things on her world-renowned talk show. 26

ALEX DA KID feat. H.E.R. &RAPSODY- "Go"

“Go” is a soulful and sultry track exploring drunken temptation. U.K. native producer Alex da Kid tapped the faceless R&B sensation H.E.R. and Grammy Nominated MC Rapsody to bring his latest musical offerings to life. H.E.R.’s voice melts on the track as she explains how after a drink or two she’s ready to let go, “and all the things I won't do I'll reconsider after just two I need the liquor just to get through,” she belts. Towards the end of the track, the 'Laila’s Wisdom' rapper dropped a few bars before H.E.R. closes the track with some runs on the chorus.

Angel puts his modern spin on the classic R.Kelly track “Bump n’ Grind" with his latest song, “Nothing Wrong.” Opening the song with “I don't see nothing wrong if you wanna come to mine” before the beat drops and R&B track turns into a turn-up situation. Angel has a knack for remixing nostalgic tracks into a cool bop. His remake of Sisqó’s “Thong Song,” entitled “Tongue Song” which dropped back in 2016 follows the same format as his new release and both songs are infectious hits. "Nothing Wrong" is one of the lead singles off the UK R&B singer's sophomore album, Woman.

ANGEL "Nothing Wrong"

STYLES P G-HOST From start to finish G-Host, Style's P ninth studio album is the official big homie project. The project ping pongs between pop shit records --and my personal 2018 anthem-- "Ghost Wars" and deep cuts "Curb the Lane," where lines like "Giving you game right now/Cause a lot of n****s is lost and others is in the system," show off Styles' lyrical skills as a gangster and a gentlemen. With no guest rap features, the "Good Times" rapper depends on vocals from Dyce Payne and Oswin Benjamin to break up verses. 28

EXPLICIT CONTENT

Intro's, interludes, skits, and outros are a lost art in music. On albums and EP's, these snippets introduced the following song or transitioned from one mood to the next. They can be humorous, see Dave East's "Regular Harlem S**t" featuring Pimp Pimp P on Paranoia 2, or they tell a story like J.Cole's "Interlude" on Cole World-The Sideline Story and sometimes they can be downright nasty. We're talking graphic, explicit, almost embarrassing to blast at full volume because of who else might be listening next to you. Album cuts like these were in abundance in the 90s. Blast some of these classic explicit skits through your speakers and see how long you can listen before you feel the need to turn the volume down.

MUSIC

NAS ALBUM OUT!

"Nas Album Done!" That was the track title off DJ Khaled's 2016 LP Major Key that had stans of the Queensbridge representative and hip-hop fan alike anticipating new music from the MC. His last fulllength project, Life is Good dropped in 2012 and while fans had guest features on Jadakiss' "Rain" from Top 5 Dead or Alive, Rick Ross' "One of Us" from Black Market and The Game's "The Ghetto" from his The Documentary 2.5 album to satisfy their consumption of Nasir Jones, features don't compare to a full-length project. In an era of mumble rap, there's a fanbase who desire to hear some knowledge kicked in their ears. The DJ Khaled collab gave hope that arguably the best rapper dead or alive was gearing up to drop something, so we waited. Waited for a single, a video, hell we waited for the official two weeks countdown that Nas told the New York Times he needed to finish the album, but we got nothing. That is until almost one year after his NYT profile and two years after the release of "Nas Album Done" that we got a definite launch date for his 11th studio album from the Yeezy designer himself, Kanye West. "I'm hand producing all the albums I tweeted about. Been chopping samples from the sunken place. Pusha May 25th My album June 1st me and Cudi June 8th and Teyana June 22nd and oh yeah...Nas June 15th," the Chicago native tweeted on April 22nd, 2018. West has had success producing for other New York artists in the past from Foxy Brown's "My Life" off her 1998 Chyna Doll album to Cameron's "Down and Out" from his 4th studio album Purple Haze and of course, the 30

numerous songs he engineered for Jay-Z's extensive catalog. But in an age where "The College Dropout's" sunken place has equated to his support for our --better yet, your President-- Donald Trump and that slavery was a choice would Mr. West hands on a Nas album work, or would it distort the consciousness many have grown to admire from the "It Was Written" rapper. At first listen to NASIR (which you can stream here), the album's title, via live stream on Mass Appeal's YouTube channel I had immediately fallen in love with "Not for Radio" featuring Puff Daddy and 070 Shake. The politically charged opening track on the seven-song project includes bars like " To Catholics, Moors and Masons (motherfuckers) /John Hanson was not the first black pres to make it/Abe Lincoln did not free the enslaved/Progress was made 'cause we forced the proclamation." "Bonjour" explored lustful desires. "Having drinks in Vegas, my business/She didn't see me coming, now she's an eyewitness/Laissez le bon temps rouler/Say ahh so the kids could play" playfully described women taking sexual facial. And then there was the personal favorite, "Cop Shot the Kids." Sampling one of the best hip-hop stories, Slick Rick's "Children Story" West and Jones tackled police brutality. "Reminds me of Emmett Till/Let's remind 'em why Kap kneels," Nas spits before the infectious chorus of Slick Rock repeating "the cops shot the kids" drops. For now, there's no confirmation, and it would be difficult to believe that these were the same seven tracks from 2016 when Escobar season was initially announced. Though it would explain why Nas' most recent domestic violence allegations from his ex-wife Kelis weren't touched on, the mention of Colin Kaepernick for his protesting of police brutality against black and brown people which started on August 26th, 2016 happened after the release of the DJ Khaled and Nas collaboration, so was Nas album really done? Still, there were plenty of solid moments throughout this album to confidently say that Nasir's pen game is sharp, and not to be questioned or doubted eleven albums into his career. Hopefully, the 'Illmatic' artist still feels he's sharp enough to bless with studio album 12. Nas Album in the works (in our best Khaled Voice) maybe?
