"Do you know what today is? IT'S OUR ANNIVERSARY!" Well, not technically today but it's our first issue of 2019, and with issue 5 we celebrate one year of Kolor Magazine. That said, to our returning readers and those new to this space, thank you for your readership and support. The glass started half empty entering 2019, I starting having doubts about this space and if I was the man for this job. By the time we published our December sustainability issue, I felt drained. This kind of intense hustle and grind without a strong vision or voice feels like flailing

helplessly; I didn't want to move forward like that but I knew stopping would yield zero results. I remind myself to be like the one man with leprosy in the book of Luke who turned back to tell God," thank you." Kolor had an incredible inaugural year; a feature on Essence.com, we worked with some of the best brands in the business and most importantly, I met some of y'all, readers who've shown the magazine SO MUCH LOVE! As I reminded myself of this, the wheels started to turn.

N O W L E T 'S G E T M O R E IN T E N S E

I'm currently sitting in my London Airbnb reliving Matty Bovan and Jasper Conran Fall 2019 shows. It's my first time traveling abroad (not including Canada), and in true Nigel form, my first venture across the pond is for fashion week. I'm juggling between scanning the catwalks for looks to pull and shoot for Kolor in the fall and working on what you'll find beyond this page. At the beginning stages of issue 5, I found myself looking at old covers of Code Magazine, a niche publication created with the intent to be a GQ for black men that launched in 1999. My father then told me about Ebony Man (first published in 1985), then I remembered Giant, King, Black Men, and my favorite, Emil Wilbekiin's Vibe when I was a kid. BOOM it clicked: KOLOR Man, a tribute to black men's style and interest magazines that aside from Bleu Magazine are currently extinct both in print and digitally. The influence that black men wield in the business of fashion today is at an all-time high despite the overall lack of color on and off the runways and examples of blatant racism that still plagues the industry at large. Is there still work to be done, HELL YEA, but the Tally's, Wilbekin's, Enninful's,`Kamarake's and Snell's laid a blueprint and built a foundation for me. With this, our anniversary issue, I hope to be my idol's wildest dreams. LET'S DO THE WORK! With love and respect, Nigel Isaiah

Barack Obama has style! Almost five years ago Republicans didn't hesitate to criticize his decision to wear his tan easter suit to a press conference. On CNN, Republican Congressmen Pete King thought the look might be more appropriate for a soiree in the Hamptons --his real issue was how he addressed the country on Syria, but the fashion critique in King didn't deem tan appropriate for the moment. I remember the single breasted two button suit because my grandfather has a similar one, and when he's feeling extra sharp on a Sunday morning for church Papa passes on the black, navy and gray options and breaks out the beige. There's no question that black and brown fellas love to "get dressed" just as much as our woman do. If you were born and raised in the black church, or have parents or grandparents who'd done so, you know what "Sunday's best" is (clothes designated specifically for attending church) and for men that was a suit. However, the relationship between black men and suits is rocky. In the 1940s when fashion trends derived exclusively from Europe and World War II government rationings funneled all of its resources, including textiles, into supporting the military, men wore naked suits. Gone were lapels, cuffs, pleats, pocket flaps, and super relaxed fits; the look was plain jackets and slim legged trousers, but in minority communities, a new style was bubbling up. Full trousers and long jackets, Zoot Suit, were becoming popular among young black and brown men. These clothes defied the idea of conserving for the war. With large lapels, high-waists, bagging pant legs with crisp cuffs and accessorized with chain watches the look was showy and considered to be one of the first youth cultures. That dare to be stylish however caused the Zoot Suit Riots, a series of conflicts that took place in Los Angles, California where white men were attacking Zoot Suit wearers. Fast forward to 2015, and you find Mashable did a profile done on black men wearing suits as a form of armor to protect against police brutality.

Aside from suits and the occasional pair of dad jeans, pinpointing where Mr. Obama's style has shown that he's style icon material beyond suits was sketchy, until Wednesday, February 20, 2019. At the UNC/Duke college

basketball game, Barack donned black on black. Dad jeans, check; sweater/button down layering combo, check and to complete the casual drip the former President wore a black Rag & Bone customized with "44" embroidered on the sleeve. This bomber is just one of the many on-trend jackets owned by POTUS. With dungarees, he's been spotted wearing his White Sox baseball bomber and a widely loved classic brown leather jacket. The game night fit was consciously stylish for a couple of reasons. One, you can never go wrong in all black (ask your favorite PR girl about the iconic get up) and two, it's also worth noting that like his better half, Michelle Obama, Barack is a supporter of American design talent. Now let's see if his style choices can impact fashion consumption during the 2020 election season. Image Courtesy: Instagram @leaguefits RAG & BONE Bomber Jacket $595, mrporter.com 23

The Gentleman's Accessory You're Not Carrying But Should Birthdays, Christmas, graduation, random care packages from home, any occasion where I received gifts from my father, a pack of handkerchieves came with the goods. For most of my young adult life, I never understood why my dad always bought me these cotton napkins I thought I'd never use. I never questioned why he bought me packs of them instead of giving me what I thought I wanted: more clothes and sneakers I that didn't need to style and profile. Around three years ago that changed. Faced with my worst enemy, a runny, stuffy nose that would inevitably drip for the next 72 hours and leave the skin on my upper lip raw from constant rubbing, wiping and blowing, I found a pack of handkerchiefs that I neglected in the past and comfortably blew my nose all day. Hankies are square pieces of cloth for blowing the nose or cleaning the face. Usually made from cotton, with a stitched hem, they fall under the general category kerchiefs, a piece of cloth made for the face or neck. Men who carry these gentlemen snot rags store them in their inside jacket or back

pant pocket. Handkerchiefs are not to be mistaken for pocket squares, made from silk (though you can find them in linen, polyester or cotton) in an array of colors and patterns and carried folded in intricate shapes in the front breast pocket. These kerchiefs are for decoration only. Unlike handkerchiefs, the beautiful silks used for pocket squares don't absorb mucus and sweat in the same fashion. Now after years of carrying a handkerchief to manage my dripping nose or sweaty forehead needs, the label whore in me is ready for a luxe snotty. Hermes has several of them in multiple colors made from jacquard cotton with hand-rolled edges.

1.

Those start at $140. Fancier ones with hand embroidery, signature "Clic Clac a Pois" print and "Petit jour" finishing can hit the $200 price point. More cost friendly, but still "high brow" options include a 7 pack from Brook Brothers, the oldest men's retailer in the country, and it will set you back $35. Thanks to my father I love the handkerchief so much I plan to own "boffum."

Pocket squares lack function but pack serious style. Remember when it comes to suits, the details: fit, style, and accessories reign supreme. Try a pocket square that will start a conversation with every hand you shake. 24

F A S H I O N G U Y s & G D I ' S On the SS19 Menswear Trends

E V E N M O R E S P A C E Baggy Denim

Denim fits from the 90's and 2000's are rearing their baggy heads on the runways, but the styles are everything but unpleasant. I first noticed the return of baggier styles last season in Willy Chavarria's AW18 collection with Polo Sport inspired, and butter leather separates. Chavarria, who was nominated for the 2019 International Woolmark Prize, doubled down on the exaggerated denim showing exclusively baggier dungarees for SS19. Other brands giving you extra leg room include Band of Outsiders, Y/ Project. Etudes and Heron Preston. - FASHION GUY: "I think baggy denim is a cool trend but definitely not for everyone. I like it because even if you're wearing a t-shirt and sneakers your silhouette stands out. Bloody O styles baggy jeans really good." - Jeremy . Fashion Design Student/Blogger @jermz_wrld GDI: "Like the look but it's not my personal style. I have noticed this look becoming more noticeable in hip hop but I'm not into that style anymore so I personally can't." Thomas F. Knot The Usual

Style and function become one with a pair of cycling glasses. These lightweight specs provide full protection for your field of vision against UV rays and flying debris while the fluorescent lenses and sleek frame styles offer a superhero meets athleisure vibe that's fresh for the season. For Spring, designers opted to protect their male models on the catwalks from iPhone and Andriod camera flashes with these cyclops-like shades. During mens fashion week in Europe Kenzo, MSGM, CMMN SWDN, and GmbH Paris presented sunglasses styles perfect for channeling your inner black Scott Summers FASHION GUY: "I actually was about to buy a pair of Balenciaga sunglasses. So yes, I would participate in this trend however, it's not for everyone." - Darius Thomas . Stylist & Image Consultant GDI: "I would wear them, probably the black ones thought; I'm not a fan of colored lenses." - Christian Hawks . Hotel Manager 28

We're starting to see the beginings of an anti-street wear movement bubble up on the runways. Sure logos, monogram prints, and expensive graphic tees has a strong hold on fashion now, but classic menswear is hitting back. Spring 2019 found designers paying special attention to suiting. While tailored options always find their way in menswear collections, this seasons cooler styles are boxy and double breasted. . Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani, and Wooyoungmi showed jackets with wide overlaps paired with slim and wide leg trousers and dressed down with denim. FASHION GUY: "I love that the suit (clean) look is coming back in [style] but, I'm always going to be a hoodie, ripped jeans and chucks kind of guy." - Lunden Olin II . Stylist looksbylunden.com

A L L -C A R R

GDI: "I like the look, it gives me LA/Miami vibes. It looks perfect for a day party or a brunch. I’m more of a streetwear guy so I wouldn’t wear this look often, but if I’m on vacation this would be something I’d wear." Y - Prince W. Juugtalk Podcast

Men's Handbags The days where men's bag options are limited to can structured briefcases and backpacks are over. The resurgence of fanny packs --now popularly worn across the chest instead of around the waist-- has kicked down the door for men's bags to come in a wide range of shapes and sizes to take center stage as a must-carry accessory. On the Spring runways, male models carried bags of all flavors: crossbody, clutches, messenger, lunch top handle, bucket and tote bags in every fabrication imaginable. Some of the best bags of the season to redefine the accessory genre for men debuted at Dunhill, Burberry and Iceberg FASHION GUY: In my opinion, the men’s accessory has been the most functional and adaptable trend in menswear. In my current role I consider myself a guy on the go. When you’re in the city it’s hard not to travel with your charger, phone, tablet and water bottle so you need somewhere to place it. A super slick crossbody or luxe book bag is my weapon of choice for how I’d rock this trend. - Dave . Fashion Consultant mrdapperdave.com GDI : "I might be too macho for the purse but I want a fanny pack bad as hell." - Zico B. Computer Tech

L e t 's T a l k A b o u t F a b o l o u s ' H e l m u t L a n g J e a n s T h a t E v e r y o n e H a t e d WHAT ARE THOSE?!?!? That was social media’s reaction to the jeans Fabolous wore over the weekend. Friday night Fab touched down in Las Vegas for a performance, and while we can assume fans in the crowd thoroughly enjoyed

screaming the rapper's lyrics word for word, his Instagram followers gave him an earful on his outfit choice.

Here are a few comments that were left under Fabolous' outfit of the day post: @lildoe_: “Bootcut jeans with Balenciaga's.” @redjapchi: “I’m trying my hardest to understand these pants.” @miggz3: “Chief called and said them jeans ain't it.” @suave_111: “yo chief, where u going with Michael Jordan’s Jean's bro.” @pimp215: “Damn bro, them jeans giving me wrangler vibes. You still my man tho” @daverychh: "Why ya jeans look like that flee?? You definitely from Brooklyn."

HELMUT LANG Utility Jeans $360, barneys.com

For his Vegas appearance, the “I’m So Into You” rapper wore a slime green and lean purple Vyner Articles denim jacket, a black tee, Balenciaga (possibly women’s) Triple S Leather & Mesh Sneaker in neon green and Helmut Lang denim. Ripped to shreds by social media, the jean in question wasn’t, in fact, bootcut but a pair of slim utility jeans. Utilitarian-inspired, low rise, and slim fit, the jeans feature front panel details, a carpenter loop, and three side patch side pockets. White topstitching and silvertone hardware as accents gave these jeans traditional dungaree vibes.

So what the hell was wrong with the jeans? Nothing to be honest. Fabolous is technically right on trend with what's happening on the menswear runways for Spring 2019. Brands like Y/Projects and Willy Chavarria have embraced a baggier denim pant fit that saw more popularity in the early 2000s. However, we do see an issue with the look as a whole: too many inspirations for one outfit. The neon green Balenciaga trainers: hypebeast fashion, Vyner Articles tie-dye denim jacket: SS19 runway trendy and then you have these Helmut Lang jeans with a circa 2001 feel but designed for where style is heading in mind. It’s a lot to digest, especially when people expect you to look like “right now,”i.e., a slimmer, or dare I say bodycon fit. You can’t please everyone with your outfit choices but other styling options for the Helmut Langs utility jeans exist, and we’ve thought of two. Option 1 - Damn Daddy: If the jeans have a dad fit, commit to a dad look. You can still do luxury sneakers that are current with the times but not overly 2019 with a pair of Nike Air Monarch trainers designer by London based menswear designer Martine Rose. Above the waist, opt for a vintage crewneck and a dad hat to top it off. You can’t go wrong looking like a dad in dad gear when you’re an actual real-life father. Option 2: Throwback Fab. Break out a throwback basketball jersey, lace up in a pair of classic kicks — we’re suggesting white low top Nike Air Force ones —, tie that bandana around a fitted cap and remind folks who the f**k Ghetto Fabolous is.

In Fabolous defense, when you take fashion risks, every look won’t translate to a successful ensemble, even for the most experienced style connoisseur. Finding your style, or in Fab’s case, navigating how to style certain pieces takes some trial and error; kudos to him for not fearing fashion and dressing to the beat of his own drum. On Instagram Fab did respond to one user questioning his choice of denim. “Bra are those bugle boy jeans? I ain’t seen a loop on jeans since 2001,” @tony2k_ wrote in his comments. The Brooklyn natives response, “I was tryna do a whole farmers/painter jean look. Shirt was a painted tie-dye look. Pants were a little long too. Guess it didn’t work in pics/ performance. But whatever. No biggie. I got a big bag to stuff in my big jeans.” 41
