Everyone complains about the weather... But nobody does anything about it… ---Mark Twain Greetings to you all! As you know it is now 4:20 in the a.m. of this f.m. day as I sit to peck out the final column of this, the Hot Summer Nights edition of this evanescent noosepaper. Why do we call it that? This is the only underground rock ‘n’ roll publication here in the Bible Belt, and doing it is inspiring to us, and it beats the hell out of getting a real job, too…something we concentrated on since the Summer of Love when we not only saw all the Bay area bands live before they got big and famous, we got to play music with some of them. That was the Summer I first turned 13 and it was so good I decided to stay there. Hence, I’m forever stuck in a life of puberty and to be honest I like it… First off, news about my lovely wife Dianne. After nearly a year sleeping on her daughter’s couch near the hospital in Little Rock, I’m happy to say that I brought her home. She’s still waiting for them to build her new leg, but is able to get around on her walker and wheelchair beautifully. Add to this, she’s got an important spirit…sort of a ‘damn-the-torpedoes-full-speed-ahead’ attitude. Better than I would have, I assure you… Had a serious let-down the other day…we travelled to Little Rock to get her prosthesis that was supposed to be ready only to find that it didn’t fit…so they are in the construction mode once again and it should be yet another couple of weeks. We are both incredibly grateful to everyone for all the prayers, gifts and love, and with her spirit and God’s immensely powerful energy, we will get past this one well…

In general...

Festivals have been intense and full of surprises. Who’d have thought that the Altered State would become totally

tropical this year? Indeed, there have been numerous thunder storms almost every day for the last few months. (The yard here in the compound needs to be baled rather than mowed…) And right now, while it has been a clear day thus far, the clouds are beeﬁng up once again so it will probably download upon us by daybreak… Wakarusa was a real treat this year, and even the weather seemed to cooperate. Tens of thousands of music fans attended and heard a couple hundred bands over the 4 days of Waka. Indeed, it was my favorite thus far… Not so lucky was Highberry several weeks later. Sporatic storms drenched the thing every day… Many have asked me about the real reason for Thunder On The Mountain being cancelled. My own take on it is that one of the scheduled sponsors of the event pulled out at the last minute, thereby yanking the necessary funds to pull it off. Let’s face it, when you have dozens of expensive huge-named acts on the bill, along with a staff of hundreds, it costs quite a lot of money to produce shows like this. Unless you have really really deep pockets, you can’t produce these events. And if someone who agreed to supply more than half of the promised funding drops out two weeks before the event you have to drop your plans. There are all sorts of lawsuits going on, as you can imagine, and there are many bitter feelings involved. ‘Nuff said… The annual Eureka blues fest, on the other hand, went off without a hitch and thousands of blues lovers attended and had a great weekend. Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is the largest open-air asylum in the country, and live blues music happened in the Auditorium, all the clubs, all over the streets, and at the incredible Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. Due to having busted a bone in my foot I was unable to attend, but our incredible reporters and photographers did. See the photo galleries all through

this edition to see the details…Meredith Mashburn, Jeremy Scott, Julia Udouj and David Hughes did a wonderful job of being there at all the events and I am grateful and proud across the board. The return of Strawberry Jam, set for May, got postponed all together, but happened several weeks later with a tiny turnout. Too bad, too, because the lineup was very good. Barth Grayson, the creator and promoter, is planning a very big festival in September, combining his Indian Summer Jam and Goat Roast on September 18 and 19. This will happen at the North Central Amphitheater located near Bald Knob. Included on the bill will be Tyrannosaurus Chicken, Hard Cider Boys and many more. We should have the whole line-up for you towards the end of August when we print our annual Out House Reading edition, so watch for it…

In Central Arkansas…….

There are wonderful musicians in these parts virtually every day at the clubs. I’m pleased to report that the Amy Helm & The Handsome Strangers show at Another Round brought in a packed house. Another Round has quickly become one of the best live music venues in Arkansas. The stage is good, the acoustics are excellent, and the food is, in a word, phenomenal. Set to appear in the coming weeks are Roy Hale, Thread, Jet 420, Rick McKean, Ben Lewis, The Trustees, Trey Johnson, The Funky Mothers, The Deltatones, Roy Hale, Josh Green, Camille Rae & District 26 and a bunch more. The club is open every day, has a ﬁne menu, good bar, huge-screen tvs, a cool outdoor smoking patio and a staff and owner that go out of their ways to make your visit as cool as it can be. There’s no cover charge…and for poor reporters that’s a real winner. Set to appear in the coming weeks are the Big John Miller, The Trustees, Salty Dogs, Shannon Boshears, Big Stack, Brian Nahlen, Funk Yeah, Steve Hester & DeJaVooDoo, The Karla Case Band, Roy Hale and the incredible Beckham Brothers Band. And make a point to check out Stratton’s Market, their magical store next door. This is a complete liquor store, among other things, along with various treats like pies and cookies and cool munchies and other fanciful stuff…and soon I am told Stratton’s will carry the entire line of ElﬁnVurkin jams, jellies, apple butter and honey. These products come with a warning: “Caution: highly addictive controlled substances”, whatever that means… Dugan’s is the newest music venue in the illustrious Little Rock River Market. Word on the street is that North Little Rock will soon have it’s own version of Midtown Billiards, when Conan Robinson opens The Four Quarters Bar this Fall. Conan has been the man with the plan for years at Midtown, and has been working for months getting the club in gear. There will be a tremendous menu, great bar and essential live music. He’ll tell us very little so as not to jinx things, but we have known Conan for many years and it shall be a hit, I assure you… The club will be at 415 Main, North Little Rock… Watch for it……. Meanwhile at Midtown Billiards, things are still very exciting. Midtown is the Altered State’s closest thing to a New Orleans dive bar. It’s open every day until daybreak, has intense bands on weekends, (not to mention an intense crowd), a great full-service bar, the best cheeseburgers in the world as well as delicious Spam sandwiches, and a crowd that really takes the cake. Let’s face it, any club that publicly advertises that it’s “where the bands come to get off when they get off everywhere else” has a lot going for it, you know?! The Hot Springs Blues and BBQ fest is on the way. See the feature elsewhere in this edition, but put it on your calendar NOW…and don’t miss this. This year the Spa City Blues Society has teamed up with Oaklawn Park and it will happen on the infield of the race-track on September 19 and 20. The feature acts are Keb’ Mo’ and Los Lonely Boys, along with Heavy Suga’ & The SweeTones, Lightnin’ Lee Langdon, The Hump Night Blues Band, Eric Hughes, Salt & Pepper, Trey Johnson & Dave Almond, Jackie B & Me, John Calvin Brewer, Ray Bonneville, and Shemekia Copeland, Jocko Deal Brian Martin, Ben Rice, Lucious Spiller, The Stacy Mitchart Band, Randy McQuay and much more. The partnership between the blues club and Oaklawn should be a good fit, and a major improvement from the years past, when the show was on Bath House Row, and always seemed to conflict with the doings of the National Park tourist crowd on the streets…plus, I might add, the parking issues of years past are no longer a problem. ---Sondra Goode The Hillberry Bluegrass Music Festival is slated to take place August 20 - 23rd, 2015. Deadhead Productions has announced they will bring this unique festival to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The event will feature two nights with the Schwag - The Grateful Dead experience, and will include a set each night where the Schwag will play bluegrass style. Hillberry will also showcase some of the best regional bluegrass acts in the area such as Rumpke Mountain Boys, Mountain Sprout, Foley’s Van, ClusterPluck, Dirty River Ramblers, Hattrick, Tyrannosaurus Chicken, Arkansauce, Cutty Rye, Big Steel River, Chucky Waggs, Mark Bilyeu & Cindy Woolf, and Woody & Sunshine. Peacemaker Music & Arts Fest

Putting all the festivals together in Fort Smith in 3 days ---Dori Colston While Fort Smith has long had a tradition of live music venues, it’s festival scene has been limited…until now. Traditionally, Fort Smith residents have been able to count on The Riverfront Blues Festival as their one annual downtown festival with music. However, this year has brought us the ﬁrst Steel Horse Rally in early May which held live music on the riverfront and coming soon we have the inaugural Peacemaker Music and Arts Festival to look forward to. You might say, we have a festival scene developing here. This ﬁrst annual Peacemaker Music and Arts Festival will take place at the The River Park Amphitheater along the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Fort Smith. The dates are Friday, July 31st through Sunday, August 2nd, 2015. Music will feature local, regional, and national acts of various genres ranging from Americana, Blues, Rock, Gospel, Country, Bluegrass, and Jam Bands. True to the festival’s intent, all genre encompassing music will be highlighted as well as various art styles. Art displays will be set up around the festival for festival goers to enjoy before and during the music at the festival. Just think, it all started with a Facebook post. That’s right, Jeff Gosey, co-owner of AJ’s Oyster Bar in downtown Fort Smith put a post on his Facebook one day asking if anyone was interested in helping him start a music festival. The response was enthusiastic. A few short weeks later, a board had been formed and the festival started to come together.

“This has been an amazing ride so far,” says Gosey, festival president. “I’m blown away by the dedication and hard work of this organization and we’re excited to announce a killer line up for this inaugural event.” I agree, the line up is killer. Huge props go to Bill Neumeier for pulling together a stunning line up that will surely pull crowds not just Arkansas, but all over the surrounding states.

I remember him smiling at me and me thinking to myself that I had to meet and know him. Over the next couple of months we would sit and chat and I would make sure he had his fresh ginger ale. We spoke of music and well, just life in general. I grew to feel honored to know him and I loved to see him smile as he came through the door. He was always smiling and a voice of positivity for me and he became a staple of our blues therapy family. In fact, as I write this I sit looking at his empty seat. I am saddened by the knowledge that he will never occupy that chair physically again and yet, so very grateful for all of the memories I have of him sitting there. If you didn’t know Jon, he lived and breathed music. He embodied it and it ran through the very essence of his soul. He supported and encouraged local musicians and he could be seen a nearly every show, event, and venue in Fayetteville, taking amazing photos and documenting nearly every minute. I know some of my favorite photos of myself are ones he captured of me when I was unaware that he was…including the video he caught of me dancing one night…very badly I might add. Lol. What he did for local music by his photos and support was immeasurable and vital to our artists but his presence and enthusiasm and smile were the true contributions to us all. The last time I saw him, he hugged me and told me to love myself more because I deserve to and that I could have, be, and do anything I want and for the ﬁrst time in quite some time, I really believed it. The following week I learned that he had gone to hospice and when I got home I took down a gift that he had given me about a year ago. A lil frog for good luck. It was gifted at a time when I was in much need of luck and love… He gave me both and ever since I had that frog on my dresser so I would see it every single day. Since that night however, I have slept with it next to my pillow. The memorial that was held at Jose’s for Jon was the most beautiful and amazing tribute. The outpouring of love for this man was touching. The all day event consisted of music from too many of our local musicians to mention and what made it even more wonderful was that his family was able to be there from all over the states. I am sure that he was smiling down on all of us and that he had a great time. It is one of life’s beautiful gifts and treasures that a stranger can become our friend and our family. How they can make such an impact on our life and heart and can bring us all together. I am positive that those of you who knew him have the same kind of fond memories and similar stories of the man with a wooden peace sign on his chair and a smile on his face. We gonna play the biscuit ---Bill Ramsey A few weeks ago I lost my dear friend and “podnah” Jack “Daddy Jack” Fryer. The tragic details of his death made news across the state. It was standing room only at a candlelight vigil at the church where he had sung in the choir. I am sure his memorial service will be the same. Mention the name Daddy Jack Fryer to just about anyone in Arkansas and you will likely get a strong response. Whatever is said, good or not so good, will only conﬁrm his iconic stature. A football hero, a business titan and visionary, he was also an alcoholic, drug abuser and ultimately an inmate. In later life, he would conquer his demons and dedicate his life to serving others. I seldom found him without a massive agenda of projects to help his fellow man. I knew Daddy Jack from a musician’s perspective as a side man, at ﬁrst by chance and later by choice. A singer, showman, soul man and a blues man of astounding proportion, he was well known as the leader of his own outrageous rhythm and blues band. I recall back in “the day”, when not fronting “The Screamers”, Jack would arrive at one of my gigs, jump on stage, grab the mic, turn and say under his breath, “Midnight Hour”. It could have been J. J. Jackson’s “But, It’s All Right”, Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me, or some other evergreen nugget. Whatever the tune, we would dutifully comply and the crowd loved it. Much to the chagrin of the band, he would steal the show, schmooze his way through the crowd, exit as he had arrived and leave the band wondering, how do we top that? Jack loved all music. He had a passion for original blues music. Not anyone’s covers, but the “real blues” by the likes of Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Elmore James and all from the early Chess label. He asked if I had ever played the “real blues”. In my ignorance I said, “Sure, that stuff’s easy”. In the course of the next few weeks, he showed me just how wrong I was. He would grill me every day to slow down and capture the authentic essence of the music. He would bellow,

“Cat, quit playing like a rock and roller”! I would try my hardest to play it like Daddy wanted it. Authenticity was the name of the game and Jack was insistent and unrelenting in his quest. From our efforts, Daddy Jack and the All Star Blues Band was born. Our first gig was to a packed house. Once again, Jack’s adoring fans had shown up to support him. Daddy Jack wasn’t shy about passing the hat for his charity. It was always suggested that the audience make a “greatly appreciated donation” cover charge to Addiction, Recovery and Support Ministries. Then Jack would milk the crowd for more donations following every song. They willingly poured more cash into his old hat positioned at his feet on stage. He joyfully acknowledged every deposit with a “thanks, podnah”, or “thanks darlin’”. One thing nobody knew was that no matter what the band was paid, Jack never paid himself. All of his performances were 100% to benefit others. Jack told every audience, “we gonna’ play the biscuit”. He meant the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena. He realized his goal in October of 2013 when Daddy Jack and the All Star Blues Band performed on the Rising Biscuit stage. Another magical moment he shared with me. Daddy Jack Fryer inspired me in ways nobody else ever has. It wasn’t always pleasant, but I learned and grew under his tutelage. He gave me my “blues name” Fat Cat Slim. He also led me further on up the road to becoming a real blues man. Most of all, Daddy showed me unselfish, loving friendship I will cherish for the rest of my life. Happy Trails Podnah! Until we jam again...

Hot Springs Blues and BBQ Festival ---David Hughes The Spa City Blues Society and Oaklawn are joining forces to host the Hot Springs Blues and BBQ Festival. The event, formerly known as the Hot Springs Blues Festival and held in downtown Hot Springs, will feature local, regional and national Blues acts as well as some of the region’s best barbeque, all on the infield of the Oaklawn facilities. The Hot Springs Blues & BBQ Festival, presented by Budweiser, will be headlined by Los Lonely Boys Saturday, September 19, and Keb’ Mo’ Sunday, September 20. “We are very excited to bring Los Lonely Boys and Keb Mo to Hot Springs,” said Rob Pratt, President of the Spa City Blues Society. “Partnering with Oaklawn has really allowed us to take this event to a whole new level.” The Grammy Award-winning trio Los Lonely Boys is comprised of brothers Henry (guitar, vocals), Jojo (bass, vocals), and Ringo (drums, vocals) Garza, who are following in the tradition of their father, Ringo Garza, Sr., who had a band with his brothers called the Falcones in the 70s and 80s. Their debut single “Heaven” reached number one on the Billboard adult contemporary chart in 2004 and the following year earned them the Grammy for best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. Other top songs include “More Than Love” and “Diamonds.” Three-time Grammy winner Keb Mo is touring in support of his 12th full length album BLUESAmericana, released last year. Over the past two decades, Keb has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music through his live and studio performances. His songs have been recorded by B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Dixie Chicks, Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer, and his playing inspired leading instrument maker Gibson Brands to issue the Keb Mo Signature Bluesmaster acoustic guitar. A funny thing happened on my way to the computer: I forgot what I was going to write. Ah well, as Mom used to say it must not’ve been important. BB King was laid to rest in his home town in Mississippi and over in South Carolina, nine churchgoers were gunned down during a Bible study / prayer meeting. And now Southern states are scrambling to erase a “symbol of hatred” from public places: the Confederate battle flag. Oh hell, man, I have the rebel flag tattooed on my right shoulder; got in 1961 as a result of taunting by yankees I served with in the military. I reckon they proved their point that we Rebs were stupid. But the thing never stood for what so many people seem to think it stands for, not to me anyway. To me it’s I am who I am … maybe I shoulda got a Popeye tattoo. Nah, I’m a rebel, not a sailor man. Y’know, there’s an incredible amount of live music going on, it being summertime in the South and all, but what we have here is recorded music. Sometimes it’s from established artists, though not often. Usually it’s something from an act that’s going to be playing this market or from a label that knows its market here in the hinterlands. Let’s face it: Arkansas is not a hotbed of glistening touring acts. On the other hand, we do get a share of the big names and, even better, we have local and regional talents that can blow some of those “name” acts off the stage. Still, like the only reason we got Frank Zappa at the Robinson was because he had a couple days free between Dallas and Memphis and performing still interested him (money too). Which reminds me: they’re redoing the Robinson Auditorium. Tore the guts out of the staid old edifice in order to construct a whole new listening space within. I can’t wait. I saw Horace Heidt there and Blackstone the Magician and “Hello Dolly” with Carol Channing and Black Oak and Ella Fitzgerald and her band acoustically rocking the house when the amplification went out. Bonnie Raitt and John Prine on the same bill, even jammin’ together. A lot of great memories in that building. Hey, I even trod that stage myself as part of a marching band in a Metropolitan Opera National Company production of “La Boheme.” I was sternly warned not to make a sound on my instrument (a clarinet, which ironically I attempted to play in bands at Garland and West Side, where the band director

politely informed me that I had no musical ability whatsoever). C’est la vie say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell. Oh yeah, Ornette Coleman is gone but not forgotten; legions of jazz saxophonists still mention him as a mentor. I humbly apologize for last issue’s reviews, especially to Dana Louise. She provided us with a ﬁne album and I did a tongue-in-cheek review and then lost the serious comments on the individual numbers. Mea culpa. I was not myself … or I was myself as the other self, y’know? The one what keeps losing keys and tools and forgetting why he came in here.

LIVE AT GEORGE’S MAJESTIC LOUNGE Earl And Them Swingin’ Door This is a live recording and I do mean live. The band was cooking on stage and the audience was cheering ‘em on. Funny thing is crowd noise never intrudes on the music. Hooray for the tech guy (Mark Risk is credited as producer). David Renko has been playing along with Earl since he was a kid and has matured into one hell of a ﬁne sax player. He was always good but now he’s even better, more nuanced. I don’t know what I could tell you about Earl Cate that you don’t know already, except maybe that he’s not only a master musician, he’s a really nice guy. Earl has had what just about any of us would accept as a successful career, yet remains humble and willing to share the stage and spotlight with my favorite (active) guitarist, Jimmy Thackery (I think they were trying to see who could bend the most notes the farthest – I’ll see your wahwah and raise you this reverb). I cannot think of enough glowing adjectives to add to this report. Like the sinuous “Yellow Moon” or the righteous version of John Lee Hooker’s “Hug You, Squeeze

You” or “I Shiver” - spooky. Wonderful vocals abound, whether it be Earl, drummer Terry Cagle, guitarist Jason Davis, or Dawn Cate. I mustn’t leave out solid bassist John Davies, who like Thackery and Renko, does not sing here, but he does provide a solid bass, without which foundation the other pillars would just crumble and tumble right off the stage. I didn’t forget to point out that it’s the kind of music that gets you up out of your seat and moving your feet, did I? BY GHOSTS Paper Anthem Sophrosyne Excellent … this opens mightily and soars. Joseph Hitchcock has talent, a smooth voice and a good sense of time, even of humor. Plays the piano well too. Produced by Adam Putman at Insomniac Studios in Fayetteville, it was sent off to West West Side in New York for mastering. This is the kind of music you need to actually listen to, deﬁnitely not background sounds, contemporary but classically styled. GLOBALIENATION Baiki indie Here’s what I’d like: for every album I get to listen to be as good as this one. I mean all the way around (and it’s not even my personal favorite type of music) from the quality of the songs to the quality of the recording. And as a special added bonus, the lyrics are sometimes in French and sometimes in English and it doesn’t matter, because you get it.

And it makes it extra interesting and listenable. It’s mostly upbeat and even hard rocking at times, but always with alluring melody and rhythm. They say the way to say his name is like “buy-key” but I’d be willing to bet he himself adds a tad of inflection at the end of the first syllable, maybe because he has an umlaut over that first i. Whatever, his given name is Philmarie and he does it all, gloriously, whether writing, singing or playing guitars, bass, and drums. Oh, and producing (at Studio La Riviere, which I suspect is nowhere near the good ol’ U S of A). Dude looks a lot like world-famous architect Jean Nouvel, same intensity. I don’t find a contact address, but I’ll bet he’s on line.

BOOM TOWN Victor Wainwright & the WildRoots Blind Pig All right! Victor and his band get right down to the boogie and don’t cut any corners. Victor sounds a lot like Dr. John at times but at other times not so much, so he has his own voice, it’s just that when he dusts off the blues he brings the good doctor to mind. He and bandmate Stephen Dees wrote / co-wrote the songs and they are all good. Some are just better than others. I have my own faves of course, like “Genuine Southern Hospitality” - what could be better? Wainwright plays piano and organ; Dees plays bass, guitars, and tambourine; both sing, as does Patricia Ann Dees, who also plays tenor sax, as does Ray Guiser. Charlie DeChant plays tenor and baritone sax. Nick Black adds electric guitar and vocals; Stephen Kampa adds harmonica and Billy Dean is the drummer. I should also call attention to Ernie Lancaster’s slide work on the aforementioned “Hospitality” track. Apparently he has since passed as he gets an RIP in his dedication. more could you ask? I especially like the one about the 12” 3-speed oscillating fan; reminds me of Lyle and Barry’s post-dated, out-of-state, two-party check (can you believe they wouldn’t cash it?). Sounds like a small but enthusiastic crowd they’re playing to…appreciative too. I don’t have the band members’ names or contact info – perhaps I can get my executive assistant, Sandra, to look that up for me (in fact, how do you know she’s not doing these reviews?) Oh yeah, I have an executive assistant and a chauffeur and a housekeeper and a cook. I also have a ghostwriter who hasn’t written a single ghastly word, which is why I am certain he’s a ghost; he appears frequently and brags that he’s going to do a bang-up job, but nary a word do I see. Except for the ones that pour in a steady stream from his vocal apparatus, which I actually hear, not see; I ain’t that stoned. 5 SONGS Towne Hall indie Five good songs in point of fact. Crash! He starts off with a bang and some ZZ Texas-type guitar before launching into his vocal, which turns out to be as good as the guitar. Then he turns around and gets all Brit on us, which sound then morphs into midwestern. Rockabilly? Not exactly, but there is that element along with southwestern inﬂuences. In other words, I can’t nail down his inﬂuences other than to say he’s something of a polymath – he has incorporated many approaches, melding them into a mellow melange. I have my reservations about his name though. I suspect it might be a pseudonym or maybe even an alias. I remember a guy named Johnson Small, who was born

black but had a larynx transplant so he could sound white. Hunh, could be....

GIANT FLYING TURTLES Giant Flying Turtles indie I don’t remember what I wrote about them last time, but I do remember that I’d mislaid their album. Well, I found it. It’s still good. Reminds me a bit of stuff I heard in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Still good, engaging. I’d say interesting, but musicians often don’t want to be interesting or thought provoking; they want to be famous and wealthy, which is the same as rich and famous, just sounds better to me. There is also some exceptional keyboard work in the mix. Think Frank Zappa doing Monkees songs or actual monkeys doing Frank Zappa. “Run For Your Life!” No, I’m kidding. They do nice harmonies and even add some strings. It’s mostly as pleasant as a glass of sherry, like if you added a dollop of absinthe to it. Zappa, remember? I still don’t have contact info. Hell, try www.giantﬂyingturtles.com and see what happens. BLACK MEDICINE Flatliners Holodeck Out of Austin’s throbbing electronic music scene come Flatliners, with their very rhythmic electro mix. The best thing about their music for me was the way they handle their rhythms, skipping a beat here, adding one there, always ﬂowing, a river of electrons in a rapids now and a placid pool next and then perhaps a whirlpool or at least an eddy. I regularly have several customers come into my shop asking advice about purchasing Acoustic/Electric guitars. Some have been beginners who have played for less than 6 months. Some are just looking for a “gigging” axe. Some are under the impression that an Acoustic/Electric is the “next step” up the evolutionary ladder from “just and acoustic”. To the beginners, I gently remind them that the reason to buy an Acoustic/ Electric Guitar is to have the capability to plug into a sound system and allow more people to HEAR them… Now, If you’ve only been playing for a couple of months… you have to ask yourself… Do you really want MORE people to hear you? To the pickers who are looking to gig… well… to these folks I can only HELP advise them as they sift through a myriad of choices. It all boils down to “the right tool for the job”… And the jobs range from the ﬁngerpicker who is looking for a ﬁne guitar that they can plug in and play at performances with the same clarity and depth of sound that the guitar can produce acoustically… To the working musician who needs a “work horse” laminated instrument that can take the rigors of the road and still perform every night without fail. There are plenty of offerings from nearly EVERY manufacturer… for a wide variety of prices. The “Next steppers” are the most challenging. Many have done some research and their monologue goes something like this: “I’m looking for an acoustic electric guitar… I want a good one… a name brand… As much solid wood as possible… The electronics need to truly reproduce the instruments natural sound… An exotic wood is cool. I’ve seen those… It needs to have low action… AND… I don’t want to spend over $400…”

SKREEEEEK! WHOA… Whoa… whoa… There’s the rub! While there ARE several acoustic guitars with electronics that are priced under $400… the quality of the guitar AND /OR the quality of the electronics will, in most cases, be compromised. An Acoustic/Electric guitar has two major components to reproduce an amplified acoustic sound:First – The guitar… Preferably one with a solid wood body, although finding one for under $600 or so can be challenging. There are some “notso-name-brand” instruments (Asian made) out there that sound quite good and are reasonably priced. The Luthiers in Asian countries have been producing guitars for western markets for over 35 years, now, and have pretty much mastered the art of building a quality instrument. One of these would be the imported offerings from Blue Ridge… They are great sounding acoustics! Some large manufacturers like Martin, Taylor, Larrivee and others pride themselves in making the fine acoustic instruments that have an electronic pickup option. Other manufacturers such as Gibson, Fender, Yamaha, Ibanez, Alvarez… and others… offer “entry level” Acoustic/Electric models that range from $200 to $600. When shopping these instruments, the buyer must pay close attention. One has to remember that manufacturers are trying to make a product within a particular price range that can have a sufficient profit margin to justify the continuation of the line. In other words, they have to balance how well the acoustic instrument is built with the quality and reliability of the electronics on board… and make it cheap enough to make money. These will start with all laminate bodies with little or no detail/binding, inexpensive tuning keys, basic electronics with an LED tuner for “bling”. Sometimes they even throw in a strap and some picks… probably because they feel guilty about the quality of the instrument. Now, I’ve mentioned “laminate” several times so far and if you are still a little fuzzy on this guitar building material, here’s a quick rundown. Laminate is, basically, a 3-layer plywood. The inside layer and outside layer is a thin veneer, usually of the same wood so as to “fool” the buyer into thinking it is made of solid wood. Now, Not all laminate is bad… It is very strong and holds its shape well. While it may not resonate like solid wood, it still vibrates and can sound surprisingly good when properly braced. Another cool application is that builders will layer an exotic wood with a cheaper “strength” wood in the middle to produce a strikingly smart looking instrument. Alvarez does this with one of their lines and while the guitars are pretty “dead” sounding acoustically, they make up for it by putting in decent electronics for a darn good sound when amplified. It looks pretty “flashy” on stage! Acoustic/Electrics that have solid wood tops and solid wood backs with laminate sides make for a good sound acoustically but unless a decent preamp and pickup is installed, the package CAN miss the mark. This is why I will usually recommend that a buyer find the best ACOUSTIC guitar that they can get within their price range… A player needs to “love” the way the instrument feels and sounds first… THEN have a good pickup installed.

When I look back over my 79 years of life, here’s what I find. For 60 or more of my years, I have been a working musician and I still am. For over 50 years I have been owner, teacher, manager or salesman in a music store. I’ve made many friends, and no enemies that I know of. I still enjoy playing in church, for solo concerts, and with my band, the Bob Boyd Sounds, in concert and for receptions and private engagements of all kinds. Like Paul Overstreet wrote, “The more I’ve tried to prove them wrong, the more I’ve proved them right.” Never miss a good opportunity to shut up. Don’t try to “reinvent the wheel.” Find somebody who knows how to do it and learn from them. You don’t get if you don’t ask. The best rule is the “Golden Rule.” Jesus taught us to treat everybody the way we’d like them to treat us. Be thankful, every day, you have something you have to do that you don’t want to do. Doing what we don’t want to do is the only way our souls can grow larger and stronger. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “We must do what we cannot do.” Suit up, show up, speak up and when the time is right, shut up. (Sometimes that’s the hard part.) Most problems come down to deciding which of these 3 is involved; principles, personalities or profits? Everything changes, except principles. Whether we like it or not, we are setting an example, good or bad, for someone, maybe many. When we have gone on to our reward, people who knew us will only remember the good we did for them. We want to believe we can “take care of ourselves” and run our own lives. But we can’t run our lives without help. I have to call on my Creator, the Creator of the universe, many times every day. He wrote the Book. He has all the wisdom I need. Cats don’t like to take baths. (I thought I’d just throw that in. 12 is a good round number.) ---BB

I also advise them to have their guitar tech do the least invasive installation as possible. This is to not disturb the intended acoustics of the instrument. There is no need to cut a big hole in the side of the guitar for a control panel… no need for an on-board tuner (get a clip-on!)… Also… when installing the jack to allow for connection to an ampliﬁer, make the hole through a part of the guitar that can support some pulling and tugging. I promise… at some point, the cord WILL get stepped

upon. The end block is usually a good site for jack installation. Above all pick an Acoustic/Electric instrument that SOUNDS good… After all… you want more people to hear you, right? Old School & New School Gretsch Guitars ---Story and photos by Steve Evans Gretsch orange is a stand-out color for vintage guitar enthusiasts, and the two guitars featured in this month’s article happen to be in the famed transparent orange finish. Take a look at the accompanying photos showing the striking color and beautiful styling of these two guitars, each representing a different era of the Gretsch Guitar Company. Both guitars were named for the country music guitarist, Chet Atkins, who helped design them. One is an old-school 1969 Chet Atkins “Nashville” and was made at the original factory in Brooklyn, New York, while the other is a newschool 1978 Atkins “Super Axe,” made in Booneville, Arkansas. The Gretsch Company manufactured guitars in Brooklyn, New York, prior to 1970, then moved production to a facility in Booneville, Arkansas. The Arkansas-made Gretsch guitars were produced from 1970 through 1981. In writing this article, I (Arkansas native, Steve Evans) feel proud that Gretsch guitars were once made in Arkansas and I dislike hearing negative comments about the Arkansas era. For example, Jay Scott, of New York City, said (in his Gretsch history book, published in 1992) that the Arkansas-made models were a “de-evolution,” and a couple of models in particular were “abysmal” and even “awful!” Since Jay’s sarcastic comments appeared in the first book ever dedicated to the story of Gretsch guitars, this has affected how vintage guitar enthusiasts value these guitars today. The Arkansas guitars were not inferior, but were something of a departure from the old-style Gretsch guitars of the 60’s. In the new Booneville factory and with a new work force, the Gretsch Company chose to make a fresh start, stepping away from the old-fashioned image of string mufflers and Bigsby tremolos, and adding some of the hot trends of the 70’s, like Gibson-style humbucking pickups and Bad Ass brand tailpieces. More than sixty-eight different Gretsch models were produced in Arkansas and they each had a model name and a four-digit model number. The Arkansas model numbers began with a “7” or “8,” while guitars with model numbers starting with a “6” were built in Brooklyn. Some of the new Gretsch guitars made over-seas also begin with a “6.” The model numbers are not always shown on the guitars, but the “serial” number is, and this can be helpful in dating the guitar. Chet Atkins “Nashville” model #6120 with a serial number of #39392 was made in March of 1969, and an Atkins “Super Axe” model #7680 with a serial number of #3-8035 was made in March of 1978. To date a vintage guitar by serial number, call Jacksonville Guitar Center & Museum at (501) 982-4933. Specifications for the 1969 Gretsch Nashville The double-cutaway body is hollow and has painted-on “f” holes. Having these non-cut-out “f” holes was a feature meant to reduce feedback when the guitar was played at loud volume. The maple body and neck are fully-bound, and the ebony fingerboard is inlaid with neo-classic thumbprint position markers. The tuning keys, pickups and control knobs are 24-karat gold plated. The Bigsby tremolo (integral for playing Chet Atkins style music) is not gold-plated, probably because it was cost prohibitive to gold-plate such a large object. Adjacent to the bridge is a string muffler, operated by a manual adjuster knob which can raise the muffler to dampen the sound of the strings. The peghead has a brass nameplate engraved with “CHET ATKINS NASHVILLE MODEL” and the gold-colored pickguard sports a likeness of Chet Atkins’ signature. In 1969 the Nashville retailed for $500.00. Adjust for inflation and that $500.00 would be the same as $3,239.85 in 2015. pearl position markers. The guitar body is solid in the center with hollow wings on the sides, similar in construction to a Gibson ES-335. Both a compressor and a phase shifter were built-into the guitar, which seemed like a revolutionary idea when this model was introduced in 1976. These effects work extremely well and are powered by a 9 Volt battery activated when the guitar cord is plugged-in. Rock guitarists appreciated the combination of a stop tailpiece and a semi-solid body designed to give superior sustain. The Gibson-style humbucking pickups also aided with sustain and the hot output worked well when using a fuzz box. The 24 1/2” string scale was slightly shorter than most other brands of guitars and made for easy string bending when playing lead guitar. The Super Axe was truly the Gretsch Company’s all-out attempt at making the ultimate guitar for the rock musician. In 1978 the Super Axe retailed for $895.00 (= $3,264.35 in 2015 dollars).

Life is short. I think we can all agree on that. It hits home when we lose someone close to us. Sometimes, we don’t even need to lose someone close to us. It can be someone we were simply an acquaintance with, someone in the circles we orbit. It can be an incident hundreds of miles away that brings the reality of how fragile and short life can be into full focus. The music world ripples with sadness when one of its own passes. Whether it’s on a national stage or something closer to home, there tends to be a nostalgic sadness that accompanies the shock and grief. We remember the good time we had when we saw ‘that band’ play. Or the time the guitar player came out after the show and shared a drink and a laugh. Why do we feel this way when we hear about ‘the day the music died’? I venture to say it’s because music touches all of us in some primal form, deep down in our roots. There is a basic rhythm we move to, the sound of a train clacking along a track or the whispers a pine tree utters as the wind passes through. We hear it, instinctively, and we move to its ebb and flow. When we find people who make music that moves us we gravitate to them. The music they play takes us somewhere, it makes us feel alive. When that music is taken away we grieve its loss. Not just the music but the person who made the music. There has been a lot of loss lately in the music world. Call it the circle of life, time marching on, whatever. People who made us feel our emotions, who led us to a place of comfort, are gone. And with them, the music they made. Several Spa City musicians have gone on to the big bandstand in the sky recently. Rather than lament the loss of these folks I want to celebrate their lives. All were good people that, in the face of their issues, kept a smile and an open heart for the people around them. Whether they were pounding the skins or slinging a drink or stroking a guitar, they impacted the people who knew them. They gave us a part of themselves when they shared their work. It’s painful to say goodbye. But, do we really have to say goodbye? Are these folks not alive in our memories? In our deeds that we perform after they’ve gone? Have they not inspired us, moved us? I challenge you, readers, to live your life to the fullest. To take advantage of the things this world has to offer. Remember these folks who have left us by living your life, by taking chances, by helping others find their rhythms. While our friends are now gone it remains imperative on us to carry on. For our time, too, is short. What will you do? On Saturday, August 15, a memorial/fundraiser will be held for late Lythium guitar player Nathanial ‘Nate’ Bates. It will be held at the Low Key Arts Building in Hot Springs (118 Arbor). More details on this event will be forthcoming. Watch social media for information. As usual, I’ve been on the road, taking in as much music as I can. Most recently I was in Eureka Springs working as the stage manager in The Auditorium for the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend. Another exceptional event put on by Charles ‘Rags’ Ragsdell. There was a lot of outstanding music over the course of several days leading up to the Father’s Day weekend show at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. My favorites shows through the weekend… Shawn Holt and The Teardrops – Shawn played in his late father’s band, Magic Slim and The Teardops, for a number of year. Once the opportunity came to lead the band, Shawn didn’t shy away. He and The Teardrops lit up the Barefoot Ballroom inside the Basin Park Hotel. Solid Chicago-style blues all night. Earl & Them – One of the best performances by anyone during the week. Earl Cate can stand toe to toe with just about any guitar player out there. The band came out swinging and held the audience to last note of the set. The Bel Airs – From Columbia, Missouri, this three-piece

has been around as long as I can remember. Brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt along with Mike Cherry put on a hell of a show. I heard these guys for the first time about fifteen years ago in Fort Smith and they are as good now as ever. Playing old school rockabilly smothered with blues, the guys were solid through and through. Nick Schnebelen of Trampled Under Foot, John Del Toro Richardson of Diunna Greenleaf’s band Blue Mercy, and Noah Wotherspoon, backed by Wotherspoon’s band – Three Albert King Award winners from previous International Blues Challenges (the award given for the best guitar player in the competition) took the stage and delivered a guitar assault for the ages. These guys are not shredders (although they could be). They played some of the finest blues guitar I’ve heard in a long time. The coolest thing about this set was there were no egos involved. It was obvious these three guys knew each other and respected each other. Their licks and riffs were tasty and emotional. I wish I could have videoed the performance. Chris Thomas King – Performing solo, King delivered a stellar set, alternating between guitar and piano. King played the role of Tommy Johnson in the film O Brother! Where Art Thou? He also played Lowell Fulson in Ray. King’s musical styling told the story of Louisiana folk music. Another performance to remember. The Nace Brothers – I saw the Nace Brothers a few years back at Maxine’s in Hot Springs. Their drummer stands up to play the drums, which automatically has you scratching your head. The guys delivered their usual up-tempo set, prevailing through sound issues like a boss. The ESBW culminates with a picnic/concert/all-star jam at Turpentine Creek. All proceeds raised from the ESBW goes to support the big cat rescues and other functions and expenses at the sanctuary. If you’ve never been to Turpentine Creek, make the time to go. It’s worth it to see some majestic animals who are now well cared for in a habitat that was

made for them. A great festival with a great cause is always worth being a part of. I made a trip to Louisville, Kentucky, for a work function. But, as you are by now well aware, I always tend to find the music. And in this case, the bourbon. Every Tuesday evening in Louisville at Stevie Ray’s down on Main Street, there is a blues jam. I got to hang out with some local musicians and hear some pretty good tunes from the jammers including my good friend Jason Lockwood of the Stella Vees. Jason holds down guitar and vocals for the band. His playing is so smooth that I get lost watching. He once told me that the Stella Vees music is all about space. “It’s not what we play”, Lockwood said. “It’s what we don’t play.” I also got to visit with the band’s bass player, Tim Dennison. It’s always nice to go somewhere and see old friends. And many thanks to Jason and Diana Lockwood for sharing their home and food (and dog) with us. So glad to count you guys among my friends. It’s also nice to get hold of some fine, aged, small batch bourbon. And boy did I. The Louisville area is a great place to pop your whiskey flavored cherry. There is a bourbon for every occasion. I came home with several nice bottles that I plan to partake of soon. A little closer to home I recently had an opportunity to sit down and chat with Eric Gales. Another great guitar player and a great person to boot, Gales told me he was working on another album and having the time of his life right now. He’s on the road constantly and still loves what he’s doing. Catch his show if you can. Speaking of closer to home, as I was making the return drive from Louisville I had Bluesville tuned in on satellite radio. A song came on and I thought ‘Man, that sounds familiar. Who is that?’ Turns out it was very familiar. It was Joe Pitts’ song Pain In The Streets. It’s pretty cool when you hear your friend’s songs being played on the radio. Kudos Joe Pitts! Congratulations to newlyweds Steve and Marianne Hester on their recent nuptials. Things keep looking up for Hester and his band, DeJaVooDoo. The guys recently released their new album. Keep your eyes out for that. Be sure to tune in to KABF 88.3 FM Saturday evenings from 7 to 9 pm for The Saturday Night Ramble. I play all kinds of music you just don’t get on corporate radio, everything from country to blues to metal to jazz and most music in between. Coming up will be a show featuring local music from Louisville (Big shout out to the folks at Better Days Records for hookin’ me up with the local stuff!). Also, coming soon, I’ll be featuring a craft beer brewer each month, telling about their particular concoctions and talking about the industry in general. Be sure to listen for that! Sing in the shower. Let the music take you. And when it prompts that lost memory and it makes you smile, take the time to reach out to the people in that memory.
