Great greetings to you all. It is now 4:20 in the a.m. of this fm day…(well…this clock actually shows 4:35 but it’s close enough to party), as we sit down to peck out the final notes for this, our annual Lefts of Spring edition. It’s Spring, kiddos, and that means it’s once again time to get outside and party under the stars like God meant for us to do…and party in front of the stars onstage, too…like we’ve been doing a lot of lately. A word about my wife Dianne. I’m happy to say that she’s still holding her own and has more patience than anyone I know. Her strong spirit and good faith have kept her sane (well, as sane as can be expected under the circumstances)… she plays with her grand-daughter each day, and doesn’t just lie around feeling sorry for herself. Indeed, for this edition she’s back to doing what she does best for this publication: chasing down the club managers on the phone and gathering the calendars. Sheesh…now that’s patience! The doctors say that her leg nub is getting healed nicely, and before long they’ll be building her new leg, getting it attached, and training her to use it…and then she’ll be coming home!!! Hey - she’s been gone since last September… We owe a large debt of gratitude to Meredith Mashburn and Jeremy Scott for putting together the recent Stand For Dianne fundraiser at George’s Majestic Lounge a couple weeks back. These are our two top photographers, and when they heard about Dianne losing her leg and still in the hospital, they built the show, secured the venue, lined up the bands, lined up the restaurants and the merchandise
for auctions, and basically put the entire concert together. Isayah Warford was supposed to bring his Isayah’s Allstars to the show…instead, he brought the entire Earl & Them band, along with Kory Montgomery and a bunch of other great musicians. On the bill were also Tyrannosaurus Chicken (God Bless Them!!!), Jeff Kearney, and a bunch more…(I’m sorry I don’t recall all the names…some of the bands on the bill had to skip and replaced their performances with a few folks I don’t yet know…) The first song of the night was a hoot: Terry Cagle, the drummer of Earl & Them, was singing the old Band tune “Ophelia”, and I overheard some girl saying “That sounds just like how Levon Helm used to sing it!” Little did she know that Terry was Levon’s nephew and worked many shows with him throughout the world… Truth is, Dianne still has a world-class version of Cabin Fever, as can be imagined… In general……. Had a wonderful time at Byrdfest on the banks of the Mulberry River a few weeks ago. The Schwag was giving us all a Gratefully dead blessing note after note…and the crowd was overly exciting at this first big outdoor campout music festival of the year. Phunkberry, another such campout music festival, happened last weekend. Despite the rain and stormy weather, the word is that the event happened without a hitch, and several hundred music lovers turned out…and stayed for the several days… We’ll have photos and a report on Phunkberry in our next issue…and have a photo collection posted online as soon as the NF photographers come to enough to get them to us…(!)

In particular……. Lots of truly incredible music festivals are in the works. See our Concert Listings for more details, but in a nutshell (or a handful of nutshells), Creekfest, Wakarusa, Thunder On The Mountain, Eureka Blues Weekend are all on the dock for the next several weeks… And a real blast from the past, the return of The Strawberry Jam outside of Bald Knob will happen on May 16th. Promoter Barth Grayson has sold his newspaper, built a new amphitheater and is getting back in the Concert game…only instead of one Strawberry Jam will be doing several large concerts throughout the season. The event was an annual musical blowout for years through the 80s and early 90s, and was a rock ‘n’ roll must-do celebration each year for thousands. This year’s jam will be headlined by Black Oak Arkansas, Moonshine Mafia, Mountain Sprout, Shipp, and Sonny Burgess & The Legendary Pacers. Also on the bill will be White River Monzter, Ransom, The Luke Williams Band, Blues DeVille, 90 Proof, The Garner-Moffitt Band, Gib Ponder, Strangelove, Delta Blues Aces, Silver Tongue, Chris Gulley and a lot more. The North Central Arkansas Amphitheater is two miles north of Bald Knob off highway 167, at 225 Prince Cemetary Road. For further information call (501)6267403……. Creekfest is yet another multi-day campout music fest. This year it is happening on May 22-24, and will feature dozens of bands. It happens at Moore’s Outdoors at the Twin Bridges on Big Piney Creek. On the bill are Mountain Sprout, Whiskey Shivers, Deadman Flats, The Brody Buster Band, 1 Oz. Jig, Arkansauce and quite a few more. See our Concert guide for the entire line-up. The Zak Brown Band, Carrie Underwood and The Band Perry will be the headliners, and several dozen other bands will be helping you camp and party for several days…

In Central Arkansas……. Another Round is kicking butt and taking names. Coming right up is Amy Helm & The Handsome Strangers (the late Levon Helm’s daughter) and her very good band. Dugan’s continues to be the place to be for great food, music and fun. The club is open every day, has a fine menu, good bar, huge-screen tvs, a cool outdoor smoking patio and a staff and owner that go out of their ways to make your visit as perfect as it can be. There’s no cover charge…I like that… Set to appear in the coming weeks are the Karla Case Band, Pepper Land, Jason Lee Hale, Luke Johnson, The Beckham Brothers Band, Adrienne & Bonnie, Taylor Made, The Deltatones and The Trustees. And while you’re there, make a point to check out Stratton’s Market, their store next door. The 12th Annual Festival...Alive At Mulberry Mountain ---Sondra Goode The 12th annual Wakarusa Music Festival is just a few weeks away. The 2015 festival will feature electrifying Main Stage performances by Umphrey’s McGee, The Floozies and Gigantic Underground Conspiracy on Thursday, followed by Chance the Rapper, STS9 and Big Gigantic on Friday. The Roots, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals and Major Lazer will headline the Main Stage on Saturday and closing out the festival on Sunday evening: Portugal. The Man, Lotus, and Thievery Corporation. Wakarusa Music Festival will take place at the magnificent Mulberry Mountain in Northwest Arkansas June 4-7, 2015. For the second year, Wakarusa will showcase a new era of art, creativity and interaction on Mulberry Mountain with the Mulberry Mountain is My Muse art grant program. This year the program will welcome 20 art installations, over 15 visual artists and collaborators and over 100 roving performers. This year’s festival will include a plethora of activities including, disc golf, yoga, hoop and flow workshops, and a Friday evening costume contest and parade, lead by MarchFourth!. Additional activities include a Sunday morning drum circle with Brandon Draper, rides on the Waka ferris wheel, hiking, canoeing, rafting, tubing, fishing and more! In addition to hundreds of food and craft vendors, patrons will also have a chance to visit Wakarusa’s, non-profit area: BLVD for a Better World. BLVD For A Better World will feature 10 regional and national non-profit organizations whose goal is to help promote political, environmental, health and social activism. This year’s non-profits include: Rock the Earth, Conscious Alliance, Love Hope Strength, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mulberry River Society, Native Expeditions, HeadCount, Leave No Trace and Arts Society of Ozark. New this year will be the Wakarusa Farmer’s Market, organized by The Arts Society of Ozark and several local agricultural non-profit organizations. Fresh produce will be available on-site and brought in from local gardeners and farmers all located in Franklin County, AR. 2015 Eureka Blues Festival
Partying In The Country’s Largest Open-air Asylum • June 18 - 21 We’re expanding the Eureka Springs Blues Weekend to a week’s worth of music this year, starting with Jimmy D. Lane in Basin Spring Park on Saturday, June 13, continuing with workshops and performances all week long in and around historic Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and ending with our Father’s Day Blues Picnic at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge on June 21. Featured acts include, in alphabetical order The Bel-Airs, Earl & Them, Shawn Holt and the Teardrops, Kelley Hunt, Chris Thomas King, Jimmy D. Lane, The Nace Brothers and The Noah Wotherspoon Band. Noah was this year’s Albert King Award winner at the International Blues Challenge, and will host fellow Albert King award winners Nick Schnebelen of Trampled Under Foot and Jonn Del Toro Richardson of Blue Mercy in a Tribute to Albert King. We’ll also feature free music in Basin Spring Park with performances by Brick Fields, Doghouse Daddies, Isayah Warford & Friends, The Jones Brothers and Lucious Spiller. We’ll also feature the winners of this year’s Ozark Blues Society of Northwest Arkansas Blues Challenge Buddy Shute and Amanda Rey & West Street Blues. And at noon on Saturday, June 20, we’ll give away 100 Hohner harmonicas to kids of all ages during our Blues For Kids Harmonica Workshop with George Hunt. Plus there will be blues music in all of our partner clubs featuring great local, regional and national acts. They include the Shari Bales Band, Brody Buster, Jeff Horton, Norman Jackson, RJ MIscho, Patrick Sweany, Tightrope and many more great acts. In addition to the music, workshops will include “Basics of Blues Guitar”, “How To Build And Play A Diddly-Bow”, “Performance Photography”, and “Writing The Perfect Blues Song”. Shari Bales Band Shari has a big voice, a big heart, and a big family! She is one of nine children and has always loved music. Since the age of five her family has had a tough time keeping the mic out of Shari’s hand. Gaining recognition for her vocals by winning numerous talent competitions, including winning talent twice in the Miss Arkansas pageant, it was easy to see Shari was born to be on stage. Since earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Arkansas, she has become an accomplished professional vocalist and vocal coach. Shari has performed in front of tens of thousands of people at events ranging from concerts to sporting events. Shari has always had a passion for supporting the American Cancer Society. Since it’s inception in 1999, Shari has performed and supported Garland County’s Relay for Life, not missing a single year. The Bel-Airs Fronted by brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt on bass and electric guitars, with Michael Cherry on drums, the Bel Airs play a danceable mix with an authentic but eclectic bluesy-countrysoul-and-rock-n-roll sound influenced by the likes of Wilson Picket, Slim Harpo, Howlin’ Wolf and Johnny Cash. The Pruitt brothers’ harmony vocal style sets them apart in the contemporary music scene--leading one reviewer to refer to them as the “Everly Brothers of Blues”. David’s “big guitar” and Dick’s howling vocals over soulful, right-on rhythm playing make this trio a powerhouse. Their most recent recording effort is GOT LOVE on Hightone Records. Recorded at The Studio with Lou Whitney in Springfield, GOT LOVE features the intensity of the live shows that loyal fans know and love, with guests Jimmy Carpenter on horn and Joe Terry on hammond organ adding depth and polish in just the right places. Brick Fields Larry Brick and Rachel “BRICK” Fields both Arkansas natives, come together with their natural approach of Ozark Gospel Blues. Larry, on guitar and background vocals along with Rachel “BRICK” using her ambrosial voice while playing guitar and flute, bring together a stormy performance each and every time. Brick Fields, the multi-award winning musical team are definitive blues artists and they are no strangers to being surrounded by great music. Rachel has spent many years touring the country and playing with many known and unknown artists from across the world. Larry has spent 30 years making a living in the music business and signed his first record deal in the 70’s. Brick Fields repertoire includes originals written by both and of various genres including Gospel, Roots, Blues, Folk as well as some loved and well tested standards. The collaboration of these different genres of music touches the heart and soul of people from all walks of life. Known for presenting enriching concerts either with their 7 piece band deemed “The Chosen Ones” or as a duo, Brick Fields offer American entertainment for the young and old alike and have released 4 albums together since 2009. “On The Vine” in 2009, “Gospel Blue” in 2010, “Shambhala” in 2011 and “Go Ahead and Sang The Blues” in 2013. The Nashville Blues Society has called Brick Fields Music an “Unleashed cleansing of the soul!” and New Music Of Tomorrow says, “Brick Fields is by far the most soulful artist I have heard in years!” Brody Buster The Brody Buster Band is a blues/rock band based out of Lawrence Kansas. Brody Buster is a former child prodigy who was featured on countless television shows including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Brody was also a regular performer at B.B.King’s Blues club and performed with BB himself several times. BB King was quoted saying, “ Despite his age Brody Buster is one of the greatest harmonica players of our time.” Brody has also performed with Quincy Jones, James Cotton,Keb Mo, Chaka Khan, Robert Downey Jr and Richie Haven, just to name a few. Brody formed the Brody Buster Band in 2009 and the three piece band has been constantly performing shows and writing new material ever since.Along the way they have gotten to open up for such acts as BB. King, Robert Randolf and the Family Band,Taj Mahal, Split Lip Rayfield, Sugar Blue, and Cedric Burnside. Brody and the band have also performed at countless festivals, bars, juke joints, city events and blues clubs all over the Midwest. The Band is currently performing around 150 shows per year and working on the next album. Doghouse Daddies Kansas City’s Doghouse Daddies exemplify the best of KC Jump Blues. Featuring Bill Morlan on upright bass and vocals, Mark Rollings on guitar, Neil Nolan on sax and harmonica and Greg Schaberg on drums, the Doghouse Daddies have played at festivals and clubs across America, and have been finalists at the International Blues Challenge. Earl & Them Earl Cate and “Them” is fronted by the legendary guitarist and vocalist Earl Cate, and features Terry Cagle on drums, “Baby” Jason Davis on guitar and John Davies on bass. Earl and Terry both toured the world with The Cate Brothers and The Band. Earl was honored when Steve Cropper named Earl as one of the top ten guitarists of all time, and his songs have been recorded by numerous artists including Coco Montoya. Still in high school, Terry Cagle replaced his uncle Levon Helm when Levon left the Cates to join Robbie Robertson and The Band. His vocals are eerily reminiscent of Levon’s, which led Terry to singing vocals with The Band on later tours when Levon was unable to sing. Jason Davis hails from lincoln, Nebraska, and his band “Baby Jason & The Spankers” toured extensively prior to him moving to Arkansas, where he was part of the legendary Tablerockers. Jason has also played with Magic Slim, James Harman and Sue Foley. John Davies is the newest member of the band, but don’t let that fool you. John has toured the world for decades, playing with blues legends like Son Seals, Guitar Shorty and Michael Burks. Shawn Holt & The Teardrops Shawn Holt Shawn Holt is the son of the late Magic Slim. The high energy, hard-driving sound of The Teardrops is still alive and well. If you liked what Magic Slim and The Teardrops played for the last 35 years, you can continue to enjoy that unique sound and energy with Shawn Holt, a chip off the old block, fronting his dad’s band. Shawn took the lead when his father fell ill during a tour where they were opening for Johnny Winter. Slim was hospitalized shortly before a performance in Pennsylvania, and the promoter asked Shawn and the band to perform despite Slim’s absence. The audience gave Shawn and the band standing ovations, and Johnny insisted that Shawn and the band complete his tour as his opening act. When Slim passed on to the great blues jam in heaven, The Teardrops asked Shawn to keep the band alive, and they have been touring constantly since! Shawn and The Teardrops won the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut for their debut recording on Blind Pig Records - Daddy Told Me. With Slim, The Teardrops were also honored with 19 BMA nominations, and wins for Blues Band of the Year and Blues Song, and two wins for Contemporary Blues Album. The Teardrops are Levi William on guitar and vocals, Vern Taylor on drums and vocals, and Christopher Biedron on bass. Jeff Horton Band The Jeff Horton Band is a guitar-driven blues band from Bentonville, Arkansas that combines a mix of original music and covers to deliver a great night of danceable blues. George Hunt George Hunt was recently honored by the Blues Society of the Ozarks as the Blues Musician of the Year. George is one
of the leading Blues in the Schools instructors in the midwest, teaching students how to play harmonica and all about Blues history. George has competed in the International Blues Challenge, and plays guitar, harmonica, mandolin, lap steel and sings. Kelley Hunt Born in Kansas City, Hunt’s love for her craft was ignited listening to early blues, R&B, roots rock, jazz and Gospel influences -- artists like Ruth Brown, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Ann Peebles, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, Charles Brown, Wanda Jackson and a crossection of the New Orleans/St. Louis/KC piano traditions of Professor Longhair, Toots Washington, Johnnie Johnson and Kansas City masters Jay McShann and Mary Lou Williams among others. Before that came the sound of her mother singing jazz and blues - her first musical memories - and the influence of her New Orleans Gospel singer grandmother. Reminders of these very traditional influences are evident in Kelley’s live performances and recordings but the lyrics, soul and passion are all her own. Her career path so far has been a story of fierce independence, incredible will, unassailable cred as a blistering live performer and hard-won accomplishment. Kelley and her band has logged over 1500 performances at a long list of premier North American and International festival stages and clubs, and has appeared six times on ‘A Prairie Home Companion’. Her new album “Beautiful Bones” is getting extensive airpplay and rave reviews. Blues Blast Magazine said “...this work is both totally inspirational and one of the best CDs you’ll hear this year.” Norman Jackson Band Norman Jackson grew up on the south side of in Chicago, singing in the church where his father was minister, hearing blues, R&B and rock, meeting Sam Cooke and B.B. King, and immersing himself in the city’s rich blues scene. Jackson said he was ordained as a minister at age 22 and began singing and traveling widely in gospel groups. He moved to Springfield around 1990 and joined Don Shipps’ Titanic Blues Band. Since Shipp’s untimely passing in 2004, Jackson has fronted his own band with soulful vocals and guitar playing. He performs regularly in Springfield, as well as festivals across America. The Jones Brothers Steve and Jerry Jones are long-time Eureka Springs residents, and have performed at festivals, events and clubs for decades. In fact, they helped found the original Eureka Springs Blues Festival, and performed at several. They have also performed at The King Biscuit Blues Fest, Kerrville Folk Festival, Little Rock Blues Fest, Charleston Blues Fest and The Bluebird Cafe. Akeem Kemp Band Akeem Kemp is an up and coming bluesman hailing from Morrilton, Arkansas. His debut album, I Like It All, was recorded while Akeem Kemp was only 18 years old and still in high school. You wouldn’t realize that though listening to his voice. His baritone voice has that timber that you would expect from a mature blues musician. It has received great reviews and extensive airplay on blues radio shows around the world. Chris Thomas King Grammy Award winner Chris Thomas King helped expose millions of movie-goers to the Blues as Tommy Johnson in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, the blockbuster hit starring George Clooney. The movie featured several songs performed by King, including a rendition of “Hard Time Killing Floor” that was recorded live during filming. King also starred as Ray Charles’s bandleader Lowell Fulson in the movie Ray, and as Blind Willie Johnson in Soul of a Man, and has appeared in the HBO series Treme. Born in Baton Rouge, King is the son of the late Swamp Blues musician and club owner Tabby Thomas. Chris played with his father, and helped run Tabby’s Blues Box and Heritage Hall. King’s latest recording is “D2D” or “Direct to Disc”. As the title suggests, it was recorded direct to a master vinyl disc at the legendary Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, Kansas. It is as close as possible today to recreate the “sing into the can” recording experience depicted in “Oh Brother”, where the music is taken directly from the microphone to the master record which is then used to create the pressing plates. As King wrote about the experience “Only my J-45 Gibson guitar, vocal, and the ethereal reverb from hallowed church walls, is etched into the 200-gram vinyl disc. “

Although I don’t get paid for listening to stuff so bad that I can’t even think of words to describe it. This isn’t that bad, in fact, not as bad as far as vocals go as the last album, but seems ol’ dude can’t make up his mind whether he wants to be Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen; he’s pretty good at channeling either one. I’m so out of date that I relate ISIS to Horus and them. Music has been important to me since I was a kid. For as long as I can remember I’ve been humming or whistling or singing as I walk or drive or ride my motorcycle. I suspect I’m not alone in that, for I’ve heard others humming or whistling as they shopped or strolled. Or worked – remember “Whistle While You Work?” And who hasn’t put a more powerful radio / tape / CD player in his or her car? If you didn’t love music, you probably would not be reading this. I hope you’re making music too. If you are, I know you’re loving it. One of our greatest Arkansas-born musicians has passed at his home in Pine Bluff at the age of 92. Clark Terry is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest and most influential trumpet players of the Twentieth Century. He was highly praised by disparate musicians from Miles Davis to Quincy Jones. He had a great philosophy: “Your mind is a powerful asset. Use it for positive thoughts and you’ll learn what I’ve learned. I call it getting on the plateau of positivity.” I like it. I also liked a guy named Bill Valentine, official name: William Valentine, Jr. Bill was a major league umpire who became the Arkansas Travelers’ GM in 1976 and served in that role until 2009. He lived and breathed baseball until he expired at 82. I am a fool, as has been pointed out to me many times by parents, teachers, bosses, and colleagues, but I’m a fool in love, in love with life, in love with adventure and even, yes, risk, which is why I have a motorcycle parked in my living room. She’s parked (Star is her name) because it’s cold and wet outside, but I was sure as hell riding her t’other night when it was clear and cool enough to make a leather jacket feel comfy and I stopped by a local watering hole for a brew or two and hit a ditch in the parking lot that threw me for a loop. Luckily there was a very kind young black man nearby who helped me right Miss Star and asked if I was okay. “Oh Yeah” I said and rode home without further incident, but boy have I been sore ever since! Anybody wanna buy a used slightly bruised motorcycle? Nah, just jokin’ – I’d be out on her right now, but Peter wants to put out a newspaper, silly boy.
Dana Louise indie? “The Sweetest Thing” is the sweetest song … reminds me of the kind of song Frank Wood used to write, you know, upbeat, got that swing … except his voice wasn’t as pretty as hers. Someone told me her daddy is a fella named Ezra Idlet, who’s off trout fishing with a buddy and probably doesn’t even know his daughter’s out runnin’ around makin’ records. Anyway, she definitely has a sweet style and a sweet voice. She can do a cool calypso and a poppy buffalo shuffle or a folky ode to a soldier’s heart, even a countrified message song. And is that her pickin’ under the goldfinch twitter? I’d give her a green light, like, “Timber!” I mean some really good pickin’ goin’ on down to the river. Dust my broom! Whooeee, won’t ol’ Ezry be surprised when he gets back from that fishing trip and finds out his daughter is a famous recording artist, written about right here in these pages. Maybe she can do for him what Norah Jones did for her daddy, you know, make him famous like Ravi Shankar. That’d be a hoot. HOLDING COURT The Cash Box Kings Blind Pig I think I’ve said this before but I’ll say it one more time: Blind Pig never fails to put out a good album and this one might be the best yet. These guys: Joe Nosek (harmonica, vocals); Oscar Wilson (vocals); Joel Patterson (lead guitar, backing vocals); Mark Haines (drums, backing vocals); Beau Sample (bass, backing vocals); Kenny Smith (drums); Barrelhouse Chuck (piano, organ, backing vocals); Billy Flynn (rhythm and lead guitar); Brad Ber (upright bass); Alex Hall (percussion) make up one hell of a batch of great blues performers. You want to know what the pure citified country blues sounds like? Check this out: they do covers but they mostly do original stuff and it’s every bit as good as the covers; that’s what I love. Wait a minute … Barrelhouse Chuck? PULL MY FINGER TO LIGHT MY PYRE Em El Jr. indie Oh yeah, I love these independent cats what send us stuff like this. A couple of Johnny Cash covers that are good but not great and then a mix of rock, country, folk, and blues that’ll make you sit up and take notice. There are 22 cuts on this one CD and they all entertain; all
are worth listening to for sure. I don’t have contact info yet, but somebody’s bound to clue me in one o’ these days. LOVE AND LOSS AND STUFF LIKE THAT Elizabeth Butler Running Home This is very nice, quite sweet, romantic even and I am a sucker for romance. Ms. Butler has an affinity for the good side of love, the sweetness and light as opposed to the dark, tragic side, so we get hopeful songs that make us feel good. Can you say “it’s my party and I’ll laugh if I want to?” Hey, good for you; look up Elizabeth Butler for your next shindig. BREAKFAST SERIAL Dali’s Watch Ravenhurst Oh, oh, oh, oh man, I expected something far out and got pretty much that, but not exactly as I’d expected. It’s mostly hard rock, metallic even, and well played. Great driving music … until they slow down … come on guys, keep rockin’ that stereo. Mic Wynne is the artist behind this; he writes the songs and sings and plays guitar and keys … hey, multi-talented (psst: keep the pedal to the metal, Mic), backed up by a superb rhythm section: Michael Galway on bass and Gary Venable on drums. Mic didn’t write all the songs; his brothers David and Devin contributed to one track and there is one cover of a Duran Duran song. Go figure. Try ravenhurstrecords. us for further details. YOU WILL GO TO THE MOON Dan Hylton and the Ghostrunners indie According to my spellchecker, “ghostrunners” is misspelled, but that’s what it says on the album cover (Ghostrunners, I mean, not misspelled). This is some very mellow music. A friend and I listened to this with me (after the Dali’s Watch disc) and she loved both of ‘em. Reckon it’s good to mellow out after a hard rock bash. Hylton has a fine high tenor, almost to the point of falsetto at times, but it’s soothing music and happened to come at a moment when I had gone from “head out on the highway” to “stuck in the middle with you” - as in right on time. DEMO Four Checks indie Four-part harmony just like it spose ta be. This reminds of the days when vocal quartets were everywhere on the airwaves, TV, radio, maybe not elevators but, you know. There are but two songs here, the second being a bit better than the first. I hope these guys (or this guy if it’s some dude in his bedroom with a four-track) do some more of this and maybe even make it popular again. Dana Louise & the Glorious Birds Recording highlights extreme family natural talent...and then some...
---Doug Trreadway I am not a plagiarist. I might borrow a phrase here and there or reword a paragraph or two, but I don’t just copy the press stuff or the words of other critics and pretend it’s all my own. So I have to admit that I am leaning heavily on press releases and rumor, as well as what I’ve actually heard on record re: Dana Louise and the Glorious Birds. Dana Louise is something special. I can state that for a fact, because I have heard her with my own ears. She is capable of hitting the right notes and of beguiling you into believing she’s singing those notes just for you. It’s nothing short of magical. Her dad is Ezra Idlet, half of Trout Fishing In America. Both he and his partner in that endeavor, Keith Grimwood, play in the rhythm section for Dana on this release, Ezra on percussion and Keith on bass. They but add to the magic of Dana Louise and The Glorious Birds. Banjo and vibes are handled by Adams Collins and John Fulbright handles harmonica, Mike Meadows does drums and percussion, Jack Williams does backup vocals, and Lee Zodrow tickles the keys on both piano and organ. Apparently Dana and Adams start performing as a duo, traveling around the state and the general region, and got good enough that they were recruited to join the stable on the Trout label started by the aforementioned Ezra and Keith. Is this a fishy story or what? Yeah, so okay, they put out this album that has a bunch of fascinating, fantastic songs which I’ve had the privilege of listening to, ergo, a few comments of my own. 1: 2: 3: 4. 5: 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11.

John n Nita: EVO ‘n’ OVE ---Story and photos by Sharon Cook John and Nita Lo Re are known in Hot Springs, Arkansas as “EvO n OvE”. They are a talented couple in their early 70’s that have started playing at different Hot Springs venues. The first was the Star Gallery and since then they have slowly been playing more and more. Their mission is to bring peace, joy and love to the masses through their music (as well as their art, skullptures and poetry.) Their style is original and unique as is their story. John Lo Re was born in 1942 and has been literally involved with music since. He and his mother spent many wonderful hours together, listening to many different kinds of music. His siblings helped him become involved with visual art as well. This Avant-Garde artist studied religion, art, metaphysics, psychology, philosophy and nutrition. He combines his passion for music and art into what he calls “Sonic Skullptures”, “Tronic Art”, Space Chimes and Interactive Skullptures; all designed to help all people live better lives through “Positive Kosmik Vibrations”. This eclectic artist has a special bond with his wife Nita as they both share a common love for the arts. Nita Lo Re was born in 1944 and raised in rural New Jersey. Her story is a little different that her husband’s because she actually started with art in a professional manner. After earning her BFA Degree in 1966 she taught art to 3rd thru 5th graders. When she was 24 she was assigned to work in an infirmary for a short time while in Israel. This led to her decision to

enter the field of nursing (she worked as an LVN part time to support her prolific art creations). In 1990 she received a MA in Marital & Family Therapy (with an emphasis in Clinical Art Therapy). Her involvement in music at this time was totally as a listener. Little did she know that when she met John in 2004 that her involvement was about to change. While developing their relationship he involved her in the creation of live music. John taught Nita how to play the keyboard and then the electric bass guitar. Not much later singing came and she loved all of it!
Because of his help, encouragement and love she is now able to play and sing with a real conviction. Nita said “Evo helped me realize all of the untapped potential that I have inside”. The Silvershakers
---Jessica Ellis ---Photos by Clayton Taylor I want to take a moment of your time and tell you about a new and upcoming band called The Silvershakers. They are by far the coolest band that I have seen recently. They are an Americana rockabilly swing band straight out of the ‘50s. I have gotten to know Tara Norwood thru her lending her sultry voice to my dear Brick Fields family. So I, of course, thought of her when I was putting together a show. I asked if she could create a unique sound for it. They were set to open and then due to unforeseen circumstances they ended up being the show in its entirety. They packed the house and by packed, I mean not even standing room only. Everyone was engaged and taken aback because their sound and style is unique…not only is it aesthetically pleasing but it sort of pulls you back into forgotten times of long ago. Their music radiates a charm and class and a rebel livelihood especially by standards of music of today. They definitely put together something that has not been done in quite some time and they are doing it astonishingly well. Let me tell you about the members of this band… First, you have the beautiful songstress Tara Madory Norwood, on guitar you have Mike Rickard and when you don’t find him playing with the Silvershakers you will find him playing with Jumpsuit Jamey and the Can’t Hardly Wait to Playboys and the Swinging Doors. They alternate each week on Tuesdays at Bear’s Place on Fifteenth Street in Fayetteville. His influences are the likes John Craig, BB King, Albert King, Freddy King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Albert Collins, and Pete Anderson, which is probably why he has a vast range of style and sound. I truly believe he can play any instrument his hands touch. Then you have Matt Norwood on the drums keeping everything flowing and on beat. When he isn’t pounding away absolute dynamic beats for you with the Silvershakers you will find him performing in his other band The 58 Delrays. And last but not least, you have Mark Scharf on standup bass. He also can be found playing in the band The 58 Delrays. I asked him to describe the Silvershakers’ sound and he put it in the most descriptive and truest way I can imagine for them so I am going to share that with you. “If you were to take a pint of Johnny Horton, a shot of Wanda Jackson & Gene Vincent, a dash of Patsy Cline, and mix them with a twist of Kim Lenz and top it off with the Stray Cats, the Silvershakers would be the result.” From time to time they will have special guests that come and join them and lend a new dynamic to their sound and you can often find each of them lending their special style and skill to other local bands such as Dawn Cate and the Rhythm Kings, Brick Fields, and the ‘58 Delrays. Since that night just a couple of months ago they have been performing all over NWA. And to think that the term ‘rockabilly’ used to be used as an insult back in the day to insult rock and roll artists that had more of a bluegrass or honky tonk sound… where would we be today without Happy Days, poodle skirts, diners and drive-ins, jukeboxes, and the easy coolness that radiates from rockabilly and swing music?! My recommendation to you is that if you own Dickie’s trousers, a motorcycle jacket, a polka dot dress or a poodle skirt, get them out, dust them off and get down to their next show and get pulled back thru time…back to the old diners and classic cars and a time when music just radiated cool… ---JE

---Bob Boyd For several years, I have been studying my Bible by writing my own paraphrase of each verse. I call it ‘The Word on the Street.’ It helps me to better understand what it means. I would like to share some of it with you here. Just about everybody has heard the familiar story of David and Goliath. Here’s the real story and its messages to us. They come directly from God’s Word: Samuel’s 1st Book, Chapter 17… So the Philistines rounded up all their warriors and got ready to do battle with the Israelites. They were already on the turf of Judah‘s inherited land, about 15 miles from Bethlehem. Meanwhile, Saul’s CI troops gathered in the Elah Valley, lined up on one mountain, loaded for bear. The Phils were on another mountain across the Valley, ready to go at it. Each side was waiting for the other to attack first. The Phils had this huge hulk of a guy named Goliath. He was about 9 feet 9 inches tall! He wore a bronze helmet and a coat of mail (metal scales woven together) that weighed 125 pounds. He had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin or scimitar. The handle of his spear was big as a weaver’s beam (about 6 inches in diameter) and the spear point alone, weighed 15 pounds, and a shield-carrier went out in front of him. So there Goliath stood, with his feet planted in the “no man’s land” between the 2 mountains. “Okay, all you soldiers of Saul!” said this scary giant. “Here I am, ready to fight. Pick your best guy and send him out here! I’ll take him on, and if he kills me, we surrender and will be your slaves. But if I kill him, ya‘ll have to surrender to us! I hereby defy the armies of Israel today. Send me your best guy!” (Note: battles were sometimes settled this way. When each side was a little spooked, and wanted to avoid whacking each other up, they each picked a “champion” contender and ran them in on each other.) Well, when Saul and his guys heard this guy daring them, they were really shaking in their boots. As we learned, Saul was their biggest guy and should have taken on Goliath, but he was chicken. Meanwhile, David is still down near Bethlehem. His geezer dad Jesse had 8 sons, and his 3 oldest sons were already in Saul’s army. David was the kid brother. He had been to Saul’s camp to play the harp for him, but in between gigs, he came home and tended his old daddy’s sheep. This Goliath guy had been doing his challenge act twice a day, morning and evening, for about 40 days, and nobody would take him on, especially Saul. One day Jesse told David, “Hey, Dave. I want you to run down and see how your big bros are doin’. Take about a bushel of this dried grain and 10 loaves of bread to them. And while you’re at it, take these 10 big chunks of cheese to their commanding officer. Then come on back and give me the news.” So Dave got out of bed early the next morning. He left his dad’s sheep with a keeper, and took all the groceries his dad had given him, and took off down to the war zone. He got there just as the soldiers were hollerin’ and gettin’ up their courage to go out to the front battle line again. He left all his groceries with the supply sergeant, ran on down to the battle line and said “Hey!” to his bros. While they were glad-handing each other, here comes big ol‘ Goliath out to make his challenge again today. David heard him bragging and taunting his people. Goliath scared the heck out of all the Israeli soldiers. They would run in fear, from this giant pagan redneck bully. The soldiers asked him, “Have you seen this guy? He’s defying us. Word is that whoever kills him, the king will make that man rich, and give him his daughter, and he won’t have to pay any more taxes!” David asked the guys standing there with him, “What happens to the guy who kills this loudmouth bully? And who is this uncircumcised Philistine? He’s out here defying the armies of the Living God!” The guys told him about the rewards the king had promised to whoever killed Goliath. Well, Dave’s oldest bro Eliab heard him talking, and said, “Hey, little bro! What you doin’ here? Who’s at home watching dad’s sheep? I know you’re proud and insolent. You’ve run off and come down here to watch the battle!” Dave said, “Hey, big bro. What’d I do now? You got a good reason to talk to me like that?” Dave turned around and started talking to another guy, and he told him the same things. So word got around and somebody told Saul what David had been saying. Saul said, “Bring that kid here to me.” When Dave got to Saul, he said, “All your troops need to relax and take a deep breath. I’ll go out and fight with this Philistine.”
Saul said, “Kid, you can’t do that! That guy is a killer from way back. You’re just a kid!” David patiently explained, “Your servant (I) used to keep my dad’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and stole a lamb, I took out after it and whacked the critter and took the lamb out of its mouth. When it tried to grab me, I grabbed it by the whiskers and whacked it to death! I’ve killed both lion and bear. I’ll take care of this uncircumcised Philistine the same way! Why, he has defied the armies of the living God! The LORD, who saved me from the lion and bear, will save me from this Philistine too.” Saul gave in. “Go do it, kid, and the LORD be with you.” (Note: this is the first time we hear from Saul that he knows the LORD is with David.) But first, Saul dressed David in his own armor, a helmet and a coat of mail. David hooked a sword onto his armor and tried to walk but couldn’t get around with all the weight. He said, “I don’t need all this stuff,” and took it off. He grabbed up his stick, picked 5 smooth rocks from the nearby creek there, put them in his shepherd’s carrying bag. In his hand was his sling, as he walked out into “no-man’s-land.” Goliath saw him and came closer to Dave, with his shield-carrier guy out front (just in case.) The giant Philistine took one look at Dave and said, “What’s this runt doin’ out here, comin’ at me with just a stick? You think I’m a dog or somethin’?” He laughed at his own joke. Then he started cursing David, using his own phony make-believe gods to swear by. “Come here, kid. I’m gonna feed the birds and critters with your dead carcass!” David replied, “Sure, you’ve got a sword and a spear and a javelin. But I’m comin‘ at you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel. That’s who you have been defying! Today the LORD will turn you over to me, and I’ll whack you and chop off your head, and I’ll feed the birds and wild beasts with you and your Philistine buddies’ dead bodies. Then everybody here will know that the LORD doesn’t save with sword and spear. That battle is the LORD’s, and He will give y’all into our hands!” That ripped it. Goliath started toward Dave. Did Dave run away? No! He ran TOWARD Goliath and the Philistine army. Dave reached into his bag, grabbed a rock, put it into his leather sling. He slung it and it went deep into the giant warrior’s forehead, and he went down like a tree, face first. David ran up to Goliath’s body and drew the giant’s sword out of it’s sheath and whacked his head off. Well, when the Philistines saw their big bully front-man was dead they took off running like bandits, with their tails between their legs. Now, the men of Israel and Judah jumped up and hollered, and took out after the Phils and chased them clear back to Ekron. Their bodies were strewn all along the way. When they came back from chasing them, they plundered the Phils’ tents. David took Goliath’s ugly head to Jerusalem, (note: that was to remind the Jebusites living there of the LORD’s victory,) but he put Goliath’s armor into his own tent. When Saul saw Dave going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, his commander-in-chief, “Ab, whose boy is that?” Ab shook his head. “You got me. I don’t know who his dad is!” “Well, go find out for me, Ab!” So after Dave rocked Goliath to death, Ab got him and brought him to Saul. Dave still had Goliath’s head in his hand. Saul said, “Hey, kid. Whose son are you?” “Jesse, from Bethlehem, is my dad.” What’s the message for us in this famous story of David and Goliath? David saw no difference in killing lions and bears to protect his sheep, to this vile, profane pagan. He was a dead shot with his sling, and knew the giant’s vulnerable spot, where his bronze helmet didn’t cover his forehead. Just like Dave had protected his dad’s sheep, so he protected the CIs from this animal who was defying and cursing them. What is YOUR Goliath? Do you have one? No one or no thing is more powerful than God, the Creator of the universe and all that is in it, the Director of every person who lives, and who ever lived, who directs and regulates all things, from the movements of the earth, planets and galaxies, to the seasons and animals of all species on earth, to the very hearts and relationships of each of His created persons. There is never anything for us to fear, if we are following God and staying within His will. But we’ve got to have complete faith in Him and not let anything scare us, ‘cause God is always at the controls, 24/7. Just remember in times past when God helped you through a tough time. He’s always there, but we gotta call on Him.

C.F. Martin Cowboy Guitars ---Story and photos by Steve Evans From 2000 through 2006, C.F. Martin & Company of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, offered a series of five unique cowboy guitars. The artwork of four of the five designs included the likeness of Chris Martin (Company CEO). Here are some excerpts from Martin “Sounding Board” magazines describing each model: 2000 “Cowboy X” limited edition of 250 guitars, list price $999.00. The Cowboy X takes advantage of cutting edge HPL photo laminating technology to reproduce Robert Armstrong’s vivid cowboy campfire scene. The back and sides are cut from “Dreamy Illusion” HPL material to complement the color of the top. The neck is shaped from Stratabond, a resin impregnated wood laminate with remarkable strength. 2001 “Cowboy II” limited edition of 500 guitars, list price $999.00. The chuckwagon has broken out the morning provisions, fresh coffee has been heated up, and the fried eggs are sizzling. The cook might look a bit familiar. It’s C.F. (Chris) Martin IV feeding dinner scraps to a hungry trail dog, or perhaps it’s a friendly coyote. Before breakfast, the trail hands unwind with a few songs, accompanied by their trusty old Martin guitar. The internal soundboard support for the Cowboy II utilizes solid spruce X-bracing with thin graphite plates to reinforce the bridge area. 2002 “Cowboy III” limited edition of 750 guitars, list price $1,099.00. The corral scene is set against a backdrop of evergreens and snow-covered mountain peaks. Ranch hands relax around the perimeter of the corral fence. One cowhand, outfitted with chaps and bandana, fingerpicks a familiar tune on his Martin OM-28 complete with teardrop tortoise pickguard. The dog in the foreground is no doubt part wolf. He joins in with a lonely howl, right in tune. Meanwhile, there’s a bucking bronco that needs busting and no one better to do it than that Pennsylvania greenhorn Chris Martin. He seems to be holding his own though. 2003 “Cowboy IV” limited edition of 250 guitars, list price $1,199.00. The Cowboy IV is the fourth in a series of original western themed models. Robert Armstrong’s painting depicts gringo Chris Martin with his “CFM” branding iron freshly heated over the coals. The brand has been burned into the back of one of the Cowboy IV guitars (a detail that is carried forward onto the actual model), but you can rest assured that no instruments were harmed during “the branding of this guitar!” An hombre with his three compradores and trusted dog are ready, Martin guitars in hand, to join in an afternoon rendition of “Back in the Saddle Again.” 2006 “Cowboy V” limited edition of 500 guitars, list price $599.00. Features C.F. Martin Chairman Chris Martin, wife Diane Repyneck and young daughter Claire Francis Martin on horseback in a western landscape near sunset, with Chris serenading his wife and daughter on guitar while their trusty dog “Buddy” trots alongside. Although Chris Martin appears on previous Cowboy Limited Editions (he is the man with the branding iron on Cowboy IV), this is the first time the entire family has been portrayed.

The artwork for the Martin cowboy guitars was painted by Robert Armstrong. Armstrong is a prolific artist known for being the illustrator of the Mickey Rat comic books. Armstrong is also an accomplished musician who plays with the “The Cheap Suit Serenaders.” To learn more about Robert Armstrong take a look at his website at http:// armstrongartandnoveltyhut.com/ The first four Martin cowboy models were traditional “000-size” guitars made in the USA, while the Cowboy V model of 2006 was a smaller “0-size” (also known as a little Martin) made in Mexico. The guitar bodies were made of HPL (High Pressure Laminate), which is a material comprised of wood fiber and laminated plastic sheets of synthetic resin. With the durability of the HPL body and the warp-resistance of a multi-laminated wooden neck, these guitars were built to outlast traditional wooden guitars. They sound really good too, due in part to Martin’s famous X-bracing pattern under the top and the use of solid spruce interior braces, top and back. These guitars produce tones similar to upper-end Martins. The Martin cowboy guitars deserve to be recognized as the best cowboy art guitars ever mass-produced.

So, the other day I was wading through the drifts of social media, killing time by skulking around to see what misery had been bestowed on the denizens of Facebook, self-induced or otherwise. I came across an article that I found quite interesting. After reading it I did what many of the self-indulgent who inhabit social media do. I shared it. With the world. Because that’s what you do when you find something on-line that is so amazing and brilliant that it MUST be given to the world. I couldn’t possibly keep something like this to myself or simply pass over it with a glance. What would the rest of the connected world do without it? Honestly, the article was ok, but you get my point. The article was about the top ten modern blues guitarists since Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was a list. Couple of things here before I go on. First, I like lists, personally. I think lists are cool and fun and they generate some good discussion among people who can think and speak intelligently regarding the content of the list. Second, a list is a list is a list. One person’s list of things is not the end all, be all, comprehensive, completely exhaustive cornucopia of topic. Take it for what it is...one person’s opinion. Finally, the list was about blues guitarists. Now, when someone says blues in a conversation, it is amazing how polarizing it can be. From the blues Nazis who think anything that didn’t come from the cotton fields of Mississippi could not possibly be a part of the royal blue bloodline to the SRV knock offs that think they’ve discovered a new way to play Little Wing. I’ve talked about my view of the blues genre many times in this column. Blues music is like any other form of music. It evolves and continues to evolve, carrying with it the mark of all who bend the notes to make the sounds. A couple of key words related to blues and the aforementioned list...’modern’ and ‘since SRV’. That said, back to the list. As I mentioned, this list was of the top ten modern blues guitarists to hit the scene since Stevie Ray. It was an interesting list and even surprised me with some of the names, people I would not have thought would play blues music in their repertoire. I was pleasantly surprised by the comments that supported the lists claim and found myself trying to locate music from these folks to see just what the author was talking about. The list was by no means comprehensive but it had a lot of heavy hitters...Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Jack White, Eric Gales, Dan Auerbach, Davy Knowles, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Derek Trucks, Jonny Lang and Ben Harper. Not a bad pedigree if your gonna make a list of something related to music, guitars. Or blues. I found it interesting to read the author’s interpretation of these guitarist’s influence on and participation in the blues genre. No, I didn’t agree with everything on the list and yes, there were names left off that I might have added. But, back to one of my original points, it was a list. A check off of one person’s opinion. Now, I tell you all that to actually get you to the real points of my diatribe. I shared this article and two things became apparent to me about Facebook and social media in general. Actually, it was more about the people who haunt facebook and social media in general. First, and this is something I’ve reckoned on for awhile, people do not read. They do not read to understand nor do they seem to care. People read just enough to get what they think are the facts. The rest of it, well, I think they make it up as they go. Reading the article all the way through would’ve tempered some of the comments and made some of these folks appear a little less militant. Second thing I noticed was that the article could not be debated because people were too busy tearing the author down because he left out their favorite guitarist or the local guitar hero wasn’t on the list or some other player who didn’t fit the list due to the era in which he played. I refer you back to ‘modern’ and ‘since SRV’. Really, I guess it comes down to one thing mainly...people just don’t read. At least not all the way to the end. There were a number of comments regarding guitar players that were around before SRV. One comment even mentioned ‘how could you leave Stevie Ray off this list’. Really? Did you actually miss the title and opening lines of the article? Are you even reading THIS article? This example is just a small example of what is part of the bigger issue. We, as a society, do not seek to understand those around us. We are so busy trying to be heard, trying to make sure our angst is stirred into the mix, that we fail to be empathetic and compassionate to others. It doesn’t matter if it’s a list of guitar players or the Affordable Care Act. It’s a fact documented in numerous studies that all of us want to be accepted, understood, heard. We fail, however, when it comes to accepting, understanding and hearing others. We seem to get lost in our own searches and forget that part of life’s search includes traveling the same path as others or crossing the paths of others. That requires interaction, communication, understanding.
We’re very good at stating our point of view. So much so that we resort to name calling and finger pointing when someone disagrees with our opinion. And Heaven forbid you get the ultimate social media fuck you...you get unfriended. What’s a fella to do? Next time you see a list or you notice an article, take the time to actually READ it all the way through. Maybe even a couple times. There is a line that keeps coming into my head as I write these lines...’seek first to understand’. Makes sense to me. When we can understand the other person’s issues it makes it easier on us to make decisions about that person. Their issues, their concerns, whatever it may be. By understanding others we become more empathetic and compassionate. It’s these things that allow us to let people into our lives, to grow ourselves and to nurture relationships. And relationships are what it’s all about. Bob Margolin told me one time that we’re all in this together. He’s right. We don’t have to think the same thoughts or agree on every statement that is made but we damned sure don’t need to hate each other or forget who our friends are over a list. We are social creatures and we crave interaction. Our differences are what make us so interesting. Wouldn’t
it suck if we all agreed on everything? But that’s ok. We can disagree. You can have your list and I can have mind and at the end of the day we can still shake hands, exchange a hug and break bread without knocking each other down. Just food for thought as you read the next list you scroll across on social media. Talking about lists, here’s my short list of things I thought about the recent Fleetwood Mac concert in the Rock. I love Fleetwood Mac. I’ve been listening to them since the days of Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. This version of the Mac is, in my opinion, the most recognized and most successful of all the incarnations. The five ‘original’ members put on one helluva show that night. Following is my list of observations from that night... 1. Mick Fleetwood is a bad-ass on drums, especially for his age. 2. Lindsey Buckingham is a bad-ass on guitar. Still. 3. Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, although you can hear the miles in their voices, are still able to sing their songs beautifully. 4. Stevie Nicks still has all the makings of a 9th grader’s coming of age fantasies. And for a 50-something year old man’s fantasies too. 5. Fleetwood Mac’s music is timeless. Just my opinions. I could be wrong. Whatever your list may be, don’t be afraid to share it. But, remember to pay attention to the other guy’s list too. You just might learn something. Maybe even about yourself.
