NIGHTFLYING.COM • RITES OF SPRING • 2015
The two most important days in your life…The day you’re born and the day you find out why… ---Mark Twain Great greetings to you all. It is now 4:20 in the a.m. of this fm day…(well… this clock actually shows 4:22 but it’s close enough to party), as we sit down to peck out the final notes for this, our annual Rites of Spring edition. It’s Spring, chilluns, and we love it…the festival season in the Altered State is being born at last…and if the recent weather tells the tale, it is now time to shake off the dust from our Wintery dazed eyes and get outside under the stars where God meant us to be. He does it every year, of course… Sure…in the Altered State, this doesn’t mean the sunshine will beam down on us entirely. Indeed, within the past week we’ve seen snow, sleet, and all sorts of nasty wintery final furies. But that’s what happens in these parts. If you don’t like the weather in Arkansas, stick around for a bit - say, ten minutes or so - and it will change… A word about my wife Dianne. In a nutshell she’s holding her own…still waiting for them to build her first prosthesis and trying to be as patient as possible under the circumstances. (She's very tired of being a patient...) The club Another Round threw a huge benefit concert for her recently that featured the Joe Pitts Band, Tyrannosaurus Chicken, Weakness for Blondes, the John Calvin Brewer Band, Stella Luss, Kyndryd Spyryts, Mike Mayberry & The Slow Hands, Hi Balls, Deltatones, Greasy Gravy and more. Despite serious rain storms the crowd showed up and spent a fine evening partying for her benefit. What a way to go out and have fun! ElfinVurkin sold out of jams and jellies and honey (for the first time), and all the proceeds went toward her medical expenses. Thanks too, to the good folks at Tom FM and The Point radio stations for the airwave support. A lot of folks there told
us that they heard word about the show on their stations. Tom Wood, Jeff Allen: you are saints…I don’t care what anyone tells me… ‘Thanks’ is a small word, but a most accurate one. Thanks to everyone for the support. Truth is, she has a world-class version of Cabin Fever, and getting out to attend this event did her a world of good…a real understatement in any terms…
In general…….
Let’s see. Now’s the time for some of the best music shows in the area to start up… First on the list, of course, is South By Southwest, the largest music festival in the world. Nightflying, of course, is one of the founding publications of SXSW, and through the years we have continued to help sponsor it, and each year have sent a musical act to represent Arkansas. Some of the artists include Jubilee Dive, David & The Immatures, Burger, Richard Johnson, The Tares, Punkinhead, Lucero, The Skeeterhawks, The Ben Miller Band, Pope County Bootleggers, Blues Patrol and as many more as we’ve had years since the beginning. It began in 1987. We started it with 700 registrants from the US and now it includes more than 28,000 registrants from throughout the world. Not bad for only 13 alternative publications to plant the seed and develop, if we do say so ourselves… This year we’re most proud to present Tyrannosuarus Chicken…one of the most intriguing and talented bands in the area…shoot: in the world. Rachel Ammons and Smilin’ Bob Lewis fill the
Tyrannosuarus Chicken
stage with a veritable jungle of instruments, and between the two, create a musical force to be reckoned with. From cigar-box to guitar to dual banjos to violin, fiddle, cello, harmonica…and most clever vocals that leave you wondering if they’re even from this planet, every minute of a T. Chicken show is essentially mezmerizing. The common statement is “I Can’t believe this shit!!” It’s very much like the old Smucker’s commercial: with a name like Tyrannosaurus Chicken it has to be good. To put it mildly, musically they perform a psychologically twisted type of Delta-Chicago-Memphis-New OrleansMississippi Blues with a little rock ‘n’ roll, boogie, Texas swing and beebop for good measure tossed in. The SXSW show will happen at Whisler’s on Thursday, March 19 at 1 p.m. The club is located at 1816 E. 6th Street in Austin. Phone for the club is (512)480-0781.
In particular…….
Lots of truly incredible music festivals in the works. See our Concert Listings for more details, but in a nutshell (or a handful of nutshells), Blues In The Natural State, Byrdfest, Phunkberry, Creekfest, Wakarusa, Thunder On The Mountain, Eureka Blues Weekend… And a real blast from the past, the return of The Strawberry Jam outside of Bald Knob will happen on May 16th. Promoter Barth Grayson has sold his newspaper, built a new amphitheater and is getting back in the Concert game…only instead of one Strawberry Jam will be doing several large concerts throughout the Summer. The event was an annual musical blowout for years through the 80s and early 90s, and was a rock ‘n’ roll mustdo celebration each year for thousands. This year’s jam will be headlined by Black Oak Arkansas, Moonshine Mafia, Mountain Sprout, Shipp, and Sonny Burgess & The Legendary Pacers. Also on the bill will be White River Monzter, Ransom, The Luke Williams Band, Blues DeVille, 90 Proof, The Garner-Moffitt Band, Gib Ponder, Strangelove, Delta Blues Aces, Silver Tongue, Chris Gulley
Black Oak Arkansas
and a lot more. The North Central Arkansas Amphitheater is two miles north of Bald Knob off highway 167, at 225 Prince Cemetary Road. For further information call (501)6267403……. Phunkberry will be the launch of The Farm in Eureka Springs. Jon Walker and Sara Jones are kicking up their new music Happening in the Altered State. To wit: they have been creating an allnew outdoor venue for camp-out-music production. The Farm is a large outdoor musical paradise. The two have been producing festivals for years at Byrd’s Camp Ground on the Mulberry River
(that they will still be doing). Phunkberry will feature Dumpstaphunk, Kung Fu!, The 1 Oz. Jig, The Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, FreeVerse, Friends Of The Phamily, Totojojo, Guta, Flatland Funk Donors, Fractal Sky, Isayah's Allstars,
photo: Michael Weintrob
Dumpstafunk
Groovement, Crate 2 Crate Sound System, Richie "Shakin'" Nagan, and a lot more. See the Concert listings or the ad for details… Byrdfest 10 is planned for April 17 & 18. This year’s headliners are The Schwag, Josh Heinrichs & Skillinjah Reggae Band, Isayah’s Allstars (doing their Allman Brothers tribute show), and a lot more. This event will happen April 17 & 18, and as always will happen at Byrd’s Adventure Center on the beautiful Mulberry River. Go to www.byrdfest.com for details and information… Creekfest is yet another multi-day campout music fest. This year it is happening on May 22-24, and will feature dozens of bands. It happens at Moore’s Outdoors at the Twin Bridges on Big Piney Creek. On the bill are Mountain Sprout, Whiskey Shivers, Deadman Flats, The Brody Buster Band, 1 Oz. Jig, Arkansansauce and quite a few more. See our Concert guide for the entire line-up. You can visit www.bigpineycreekfest.com for all the details… In the last several years these multi-day campout music fests have inundated the Altered State…and we are so glad they have. Arkansas is such a beautiful state, with myriads of nice streams, mountains and concert areas. The real draws for these shows are not only the music, but the fact that fans can get as toasted with recreational libations as they want without having to risk getting in their cars to go home…not to mention that the crowds are essentially all equally involved. Add the fact that in these rural areas cell-phones don’t tend to work. You won’t see folks with their faces in their phones at these things…at about half the indoor shows we attend many of the people aren’t even connected with each other…they are connected on their phones with someone else, and essentially ignoring the shows in the venues. What is the point of being there anyway? To me, the enjoyment of a good live music show is the energy it produces: the sheer synergy of the bands, the people, the food, the drinks, and basically, the commeraderie at the events that are their importance…these electronics are cool in their own ways, but if they prevent you from connecting with the real world where you are, they are robbing you of reality… Personally, I consider reality as opposed to fantasy any time…
In Central Arkansas…….

In Fort Smith…….
Headed down the hill to the Fort has become so much easier since that interstate has been completed. I know... that's been a few years now, but having lived in Northwest Arkansas before its time and risking my life on Hwy. 71 for years, it always still thrills me...) There is no better music room in the Spa than The Big Chill. This is home away from home for hundreds of musicians. Well folks that’s about all the time we have to chat. The sun is rising and it’s time to put this puppy to bed as they say. That and the good folks at the printer are by now cussing us and making comments we can’t politely say in a family noosepaper. Alas, it’s all cool though, and we continue to do it for your love. Jeff Kearney
One of the most talented musicians in the Altered State ---Meredith Mashburn “I first got into music when my parents bought me a boom box and Michael Jackson’s Thriller tape. It was such a beautiful gift where I could create my own musical identity. Before that I was exposed to the blues, The Beatles, Sunny Terry, and Eric Clapton through my parents. The first three tapes I ever bought for myself were Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols by Sex Pistols, Mothers Milk by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the other one was Pump by Aerosmith. I didn’t listen to Aerosmith too much but I burned up the Sex Pistols and Chili Peppers.” Jeff remembered that sometimes the tape would break and he had to perform surgery on them with scotch tape. “I miss that old technology” he said, reminiscing the times when he had to call into the radio station to record his favorite songs. When the song finally came on, he would be ready to press record and stop at just the right time and then start the process all over again. “We had to really work for our music back then.” At the age of fifteen Jeff moved to Texarkana with his mom. This was when he first honed his skills on the guitar. At the beginning of the summer, and new to town, Jeff spent the next couple of months constantly playing his guitar. From that point on he had the bug. During this time he was mostly listening to music identified with the grunge scene. However, being in a rural area, he had to learn how to play Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the like, in order to play with other people. He moved to Newton County and formed his first band, Honey Bop. Soon after this, he joined a band called Shaboinken. Having no amp, he rigged a house speaker to play his bass through. After Shaboinken, he joined a band called Mr. Swellbelly, playing with two twin brothers, Joe and Pat Vilines. It was in 1996 that Jeff joined the Flipoff Pirates. This band has a heavy funk groove that transcends the genre and encompasses so much more. With a unique sound and funky groove this band has played together for almost twenty years. “They are my family. I love all of those guys. Jake Weeden is one of the best songwriters I have ever met and Matt Smith is a freaking incredible guitar player. Barry More is some kind of beautiful maniac.” They grew up together, went to high school together, got married and had children at similar times. “We play together still. We just recorded a record that we need to finish up that is going to be a monster. I want to call it the Next Monster but we are still debating the name. I have always loved funk music. It is something that connects with people so deeply that they have to move their body around. It is so rewarding to see that you are affecting people in such a positive way. This has always appealed to me.”
shakes, and moves you. Listening to this music, amazing horns pared with rhythm, you can’t help but get down. More recently, Jeff is playing solo gigs. His first solo gig was at The Green Door in Fayetteville.
“There is a freedom when playing solo. You can slow down if you want. You can speed up when you want and get quiet when you want. As I got more and more solo gigs, I realized that there is a little bit of money in it as well. The sound naturally is different from when you play in a band. When you play with a band in bars and clubs, people are there to shed their weekly woes and party. In that environment you want to keep everything upbeat. The solo stuff gives me
Jeff also plays and tours with the band 1 oz Jig. This band has a deep funk sound that grabs, 8

a chance to play darker more subtle notes. I can explore different aspects of my songwriting.” Kearney is currently in the process of writing his first solo album after twenty-five years in the business. It will allow him to create a sound that personal to him. He has always written and played for bands. “This is the first time I have made something just for me. I have always loved funk music. It is something that connects with people so deeply that they have to move their body around. It is so rewarding to see that you are affecting people in such a positive way. This has always appealed to me. As I get older, I like to explore the deeper parts of human emotion. For a couple of the songs, I want it to be stark and broken down, with small instrumentation. I am excited about being able to sing quietly and experience the nuance of the sound. I think I am going to call my solo record Home, just because when I was a kid my family moved around a lot. I was the perennial new guy all of the time. When I left home, I continued on that road, taking off hitchhiking, with my guitar. I was just thinking about this the other day. Now that I have a family, a beautiful wife, and children, I have a home now for the first time in my life. This was a comforting realization for me. Now, no matter where I am at, if I am with my wife and my kids, I am home.” To reach Jeff for booking or more information, please call (479)790-4761. ---MM

Estrogen rises and the music gets hotter:
Arkansas Women Who Rock ---Sondra Goode So the era dominated by boy bands is at an end as we stumble into 2015, and it seems that women are on the rise musically once again. With the inception of Heart, the Wilson sisters blazed new female frontiers following in the footsteps of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and many of the male influenced groups of the time with their “Dreamboat Annie” release and beyond. Then the runaways in the late 70’s as Joan Jett and Lita Ford tested the meniachal waters with a punk version of their later selves, then split off to their own genres. As Suzi Quattro blasted out the controversial punk sounds of “Can the Can” & “She’s in Love With You” and the radicial Patty Smith belting out “Rock and Roll Nigga”! Then along came Fleetwood Mac with Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie as strong female singers and songwriters with Lindsay Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood. Formed from a blues band started by legendary guitarist Peter Green, they laid down a string of hits like the world had never seen like “The Chain”, & “Don’t Stop”, to name a few, legendary multi - platinum albums in Tusk and Rumors, set the gossip world ablaze with talk of multiple in band sexual partners and are still influencing chick rockers today. One of the most memorable moments of the female rise was in Deborah Harry as “Blondie” in “One Way or Another” and “Heart of Glass” to the over sensual Madonna with the over the top pointed bra, her tell all book - “Truth or Dare”, and her genius of “Like A Virgin” to the Bangles “Walk Like An Egyptian”, and the Go Go’s Bluesy back beat of “Cool Jerk”. Then Pat Benatar with the searing riffs of her husband’s fingers, which had many more talents. to set the world on fire with her “Crimes of Passion” LP and she did “Hit me with Her Best Shot”! And later she spoke out against child abuse with her “Hell is For Children” release. Lita Ford later being heralded as the “Queen of Metal” with a monster hit “If I Close My Eyes Forever” with guest Ozzy Osbourne on the main track, and Joan Jett as the punky lady killer, love em’ and leave em’ “I Hate Myself For Loving You” - “I Love Rock & Roll” kinda gal with her Blackhearts band in the beginning of the 80’s. And recently in the late 1990’s and into the new millennia we have more Metal Maidens as in Amy Lee of Evanescence & Lizzy Hale of Halestorm, a woman
who can play as good as any man, and out sing them too, with bigger balls! All in all the ladies have proven themselves time and time again in the studio or live on stage. Always a plus, the natural curves of a woman’s body with a guitar strapped on it, anything strapped on it, or sweating madly with their skimpy or flamboyant clothing sticking to their skins has been a sexual turn on. Especially when they can belt out any tune and shred their lovely, seemingly over sized guitars which fit into the crevices of their physiques like God made them to be revered as all of our heroes.. Locally in Little Rock we have such queens of the musical persuasion in Erica Jones and Brean Oliver Schoultz. With their concept of “Women Who Rock”. A show starring “Hooker Red” and “Kyndryd Spyryts”. With their male counterparts burning up the frets and the skins, these ladies of rock appeal to every man woman and child. Erica Jones started her dreams of musical passion in the rocking 80’s: She came from a musical family starting with her mother Mickey Glaeser, uncle Lynn Tanner, and brother Joe Glaeser, cousins Rick Dicus and Jennifer Evans. She was inspired by watching “Top of the Pops” BBC television show every Thursday night while she was living in Cheltenham, England from 1972 to 1975, and was a big fan of Suzi Quatro, David Essex, & Golden Earring. By late junior high school she was infatuated with Ann Wilson of Heart and the band Styx. And all through school, the thought of being on stage like her heroes in front of all those people really scared the hell out of her. She was tricked into forming her first band in 1985, a group called Titesqueeze and reluctantly she closed her eyes, clenched the microphone, and locked her knees, which nearly made her pass out, and actually placed 2nd in the state wide battle of he bands that year. She was then asked to sing with Mike Tabor and Paul Chunn’s band Bad Habits at Tiffany’s Club on Ouchita Ave. in Hot Springs later that year, until the bar burned down. In 1989 She played in a band called Baby & the Blues Boys with Tommy Rock. She then formed a band with the remnants of that group and called it Rocking Horse, and landed a house gig at Goodtime
Charlies and played there for the summer. The next few years found her in and out of different bands like Justus, Alias Jones and Old School Players to name a few. She then decided to take a break to raise her children from 1991 to 2002. In 2003 she was called on by David Harvey her to sing in a Christian band 3:16 and they performed at many large Christian rock events, festivals, and venues all around the Arkla-tex-a-homa and Memphis area for several years until that founder moved to Dallas. Most recently in 2014-now, she has been performing in local Hot Springs band Kyndryd Spyryts with long time friend Tommy Rock. Both a full band which consists of Steve Davis on the drums and vocals, and Chuck Smith, Scott Harpster, or Tommy Tucker on the Bass when they are available. Between band gigs their acoustic duo, Kyndryd Spyryts Acoustic and the full band Kyndryd Spyryts they have performed gigs all around in the Altered state at venues like Pop’s Lounge in Oaklawn, The Mirage in Arkadelphia, TC’s Midtown in Conway, West End Smokehouse & Tavern in Little Rock, Fox and Hound in North Little Rock, and many lake venues around Hot Springs such as Barefoot’s Lakeside Grill and Hawg’s Pizza, along with venues in Texarkana, Stuttgart, Caddo Valley, and the last 4 Nightflying Anniversary Parties at The Big Chill to mention a few. Rock and Jones have developed a solid partnership based upon their work schedules and are out performing music 6 to 10 times a month. The musical bond Tommy & Erica have developed is much more than spiritual best friends. They are a God-fearing team of consummate professionals driven to excel by giving of themselves to help their fellow brothers and sisters, by performing with sober, clear minds and vocals that harmonize like the cold North wind whispers through the bare winter trees with love and compassion that naturally emits from their fiery, passionate, musical souls. Brean Oliver Schoultz & Ron Schoultz who in the mid 2000’s ran Club 2720, have formed a bombastic, full blown rock band that covers songs from the ‘70s, ‘80s, & ‘90s to Lady Gaga. With a couple of kids, and 5 bulldogs in tow they have opened their own restaurant, Shady Corner Café & have taken ownership of a small engine business, Lakeside Small Engine, and are living the American dream. As the saying goes behind every good man is a better woman, Brean the lead vocalist pushes the old man Ron to exceed in his lead guitar playing, and the love for his family pushes him even further to excel in everyday life. Like two Phoenix’ rising from ashes they survived a devastating house fire where they lost everything, to rebuilding to the successful point in their lives they are today. With a solid team of competent players behind them, Steve Baker on bass, Drew Dickson on drums, and Ron’s long lost estranged son, young blood Alex Looper on guitars. These players all work together as a solid team and deliver a high energy rock show that few posses the skill to achieve in the area. Sex sells and this band is oozing with it, along with a solid sound. They are working towards a better life, and are always there to help friends in need. The future looks bright for them as they are always trying to improve themselves. They have the right attitudes as down to earth, God fearing, caring, human beings with very full lives, and yet somehow the Schoultz’s find time for a rigid rehearsal schedule and gigs monthly. As a famous Arkansan says: “There Ain’t No Cure”, music is in their blood, as is the love they share and hold for their family, friends, and rock and roll. And like Domino’s pizza, they deliver! Kyndryd Sprytys have formed a team partnership with Hooker Red and support and closely work together as a promotional team at each others individual shows, The Rock and Roll Society, and Southern Rockstar emagazine. They have their partners backs to the end so to speak, to overcome adversity, prejudice, and silly people wherever they may perform. They have several more Women Who Rock dates planned and booked. The variety speaks for itself, and all are influenced by the great musical women of our time. Whether together or apart, these 2 bands will rock you to your knees and while you’re down there thank the Lord for good effin’ music!
Brean Oliver Schoultz

like a high school student, but he writes songs and plays guitar like a seasoned veteran. Even his singing belies his looks. He gets excellent support from his band: Bjorn Tore “Daffy” Larsen on better-getup-and-shake-it harmonica, Roy Oscar Petterson on bass, and Havard Sund on drums. Additional help comes from singer Kirsten Thien, Erik Boyd, Magnus Westgaard, Ola Overby, and Kristian Koppang. The album was recorded at Big H Records, mixed and mastered at Dirt Floor Studios. I have no idea where those facilities are but you might try www.magnusbergmusic.com if you want to find out.

Well, it’s 2015. I like the years that end in either a zero or a five. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s a genetically-based bias, you know, like five fingers, ten fingers, five toes, ten toes, see? I like symmetry too: two eyes, ears, et cetera. So it was only natural that, when I was introduced to binary coding, I took to it right away (better than a sergeant who tried to tell me something erroneous and, when I tried to explain to him why he was wrong, brought me up on charges of insubordination; I lost a stripe and my security clearance – but that’s another story). So far this year has been pretty good. Last year was a debacle; let’s not go into it. Oh, the good news? Turns out the guy who hit me does have insurance and they sent me a check for more than enough to repair the structural damage to my truck. Ain’t that good news? It is when the temperature is in the teens and your alternate mode of transportation is a motorcycle. Uber-fan Tim Bradley stopped by and told me I need to mention some names from the past, Arkansas musicians who are gone but certainly should not be forgotten, folks like Patsy Montana, Jimmy Driftwood, Louis Jordan, Burger, Tim Sullivan, Frank Wood, Rick Fowler, and so many more. You might see my own obituary here. Meanwhile, Stuart Scott of ESPN succumbed to cancer at 49 and Edward Brooke III, the first popularly-elected black senator (Massachusetts), just plain wore out at 95. Consumer advocate and former Miss America, Bess Myerson, has passed at 90 and the most beautiful cinema star of her day, Anita Ekberg, has faded from the scene at 83. Oh, the musicians Joe Cocker and Andre Crouch both went out at my age (72) and drummer Dallas Taylor, who played with CS&N among others, has paradiddled his way off the stage at 66. Arkansas poet / translator / teacher Miller Williams got 86’d at 84, his greatest contribution to the world probably his daughter Lucinda. Speaking of contributions to the world, the guy what came up with instant replay, TV-producer Tony Verna, is gone at 81. En fin, Ernie Banks has tipped his cap to the crowd for the last time at 83. Known as Mr. Cub for his zeal for his team and the game of baseball and the place he played, beautiful Wrigley Field in Chicago. Banks set the record for most homers by a shortstop (he hit a career total 512 taters, but moved to first base toward the end). He was MVP of the National League two times in a row, becoming the first player to do that, plus, one of
those MVP seasons was on a team with a losing record, the first time anybody had done that in the old NL. He was a great ambassador for the game, always giving autographs until the crowd dispersed, never charging a fee, not even after he retired from the game. I just heard that Bob Ketchum has died. I don’t know how old he was but I do know that he had a great influence on Arkansas music, which he loved so much he was most likely ageless. Music has its charms you know. We have lots of good music to consider, so let’s get on with it:
CRYIN’ MERCY Altered Five Blues Band Omnivibe Wow! I mean really, like, wow, these guys write fine songs, play them superbly, and just roll out badass blues cut after cut. Lead vocalist Jeff Taylor has a fantastic voice, so well fit for these tunes, and he is more than ably accompanied by the guitar work of Jeff Schroedl and a rock steady bass line by Mark Solveson (both of whom add backup vocals). Raymond Tevich adds some terrific keyboard finesse and Scott Schroedl handles percussion handily. The Altered Five tore this up, I mean recorded this album of eleven terrific songs at The Dream Factory in Madison, Wisconsin and then had it mixed and mastered at The Switchyard in Nashville, Tennessee. See www.alteredfive.com or www.omniviberecords.com for further information. LIVE MY LIFE Sena Ehrhardt Blind Pig Well, as I always say, if it’s on Blind Pig, it’s gonna be good and this is no exception to that rule. Sena Ehrhardt kicks ass, sort of a cross between Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin. She even writes some of her own songs and covers cats from Albert Collins to Leon Russell. Hell of a
show. She even gets a shot of slide guitar from Smokin’ Joe Kubek., not to mention Cole Allen’s hot leads (he also wrote or co-wrote a couple cuts). Ooh, try it, ya just might like it. Go to www.senaehrhardt.com or www.blindpigrecords.com for details on ordering if you can’t find it in your local … oh, closed did it? There you go – try on line.
THE WHEEL MAN Watermelon Slim and the Workers Northern Blues Oh yeah, I expected great things from this disc and it delivered. The Wheel Man cometh and taketh away your breath. He plays harmonica, Dobro, and percussion as well as sings (have I already used the term “kicks ass”?). You know, when you listen to two truly kickass albums in a row, it can be easy to fall into platitude mode, but I shall fight the urge. I will say something original! Uh, how about I quote Jerry Wexler, who called him “a one-of-a-kind pickin’ ‘n’ singin’ Okie dynamo.” And hey, Magic Slim makes an appearance here too. Wanna find out more about him? His website is www.watermelonslim.com. CUT ME LOOSE Magnus Berg indie Ow, I admit I got a lot more than I expected from this disc. The kid looks
EVERYTHING I NEED R J Mischo indie OK, this is some funky blues. R J plays harmonica and sings, backed by Jeremy Johnson and Frank Krokowski on guitars, Bruce McCabe on keys, Billy Black on bass, Victor Span on drums, and Richard Medek on percussion. And they do get lowdown. A dozen tunes recorded at Barking Jack Records in North Saint Paul, Minnesota and well worth the listening. See www.rjblues.com for more.
INDIAN RODEO Josh Newcomb indie Josh wrote all the songs and handled the recording and mixing as well. And he sings, plays guitar, bass, and drums along with some help fromTim Crouch on fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, Tony Paoletta, Vic Lawson, and Robbie Springfield on steel, and drummers Randy Kohrs and Robert Hannah (not all at the same time). This is just plain old down home country, the

best kind, y’know. He’s got a good voice he can meld into a melodious ballad or a rousing shit kicker. Go to www.indianrodeo.net, www.facebook.com/joshnewcomband, or www.youtube.com/warpaintent for info, OR check out www.warpaintentertainment.com to download his songs for free! I recommend it. I bet you’ll like it too, lessen yuh jes’ don’ lahk country – you ain’ one o’ them is yuh? Of course not; you wouldn’t be a Nightflying reader if you weren’t open to music in whatever genre as long as it’s played well and with brio. Josh does just that, touching just about all the country music bases, like nods to Johnny Cash, George Jones, Willie Nelson, broken hearts, cheatin’ wimmen, and all that good stuff.
THE DEVIL IN HEELS Whiskey Neverland indie Doggone it, I so wanted this to be good and not that it’s bad, but the band doesn’t seem to ever really get into the groove and the singer, well, she just kind of has a flat affect and her voice gets kind of thin at times. Worse, I can’t read most of the lettering, even with a magnifying glass, so I don’t have much information. I just like the cover art.
DRINKING WITH THE ANGELS Don Kesson ? I don’t see a record label but the spine has “DMCK0001CD” printed on it, so by extrapolating the parameters of the musical universe in which people can have two middle initials I conjecture that it’s an independent product. Now’s when it gets weird: the music is pure dee country and was recorded at Maybank Studios in Glasgow as in Scotland as in Jolly Olde England (if you don’t believe me go to www.maybankstudios.co.uk) OK? Are we in for another British invasion? Only this time it’s country instead of rock and folk and pop and all that Sixties stuff. They play Young guitars (by John Young) or at least I think Don does and maybe Matt Harvey, who also plays mandolin and fiddle, and possibly Alan Thomson, tho I doubt there’s a Young bass. And I’m quite certain that drummer Ross Wilson is not playing Young instruments. All songs were writ by Charlie Sharkey. Find www. donkesson.com to get to the bottom of these and other mysteries. Or get the disc
for a whole bunch of good music.
YOUR OWN REACTION KCDC indie This was recorded in California: Lost Monkey Studio in Hayward and Studio K2 in San Francisco. Deborah Crooks, the vocalist, has a somewhat flattened affect, but she knows exactly how to use her voice to fit the lyrics and the tune she’s selling. She never tries to overpower the song and she has a really good guitarist playing with her named Kwame Copeland, another artist who doesn’t try to force anything. They found a couple cats, drummer Mike Stevens and bassist Andrew Gibson, who are capable of playing precisely what the spirit of the song calls for and keep that beat. Turns into a truly enjoyable musical experience. Sadly, it makes me miss my old haunts in the Bay Area. Even sadder is the fact that if I were to go back out there it wouldn’t be the same. Oh well, at least I get to hear music that reminds me of freer times. Try www.deborahcrooks.com or www.kwamecopeland.com or contact them via deborahcrooks@gmail.com or kwame@hotmail.com.
they’re good songs too. Layne Smith sounds just a tiny bit like Dolly Parton at times, but for the most part she’s a fresh new voice that’s all her own style and circumstance. Bud Jones is her guitarist; John Heinrich is her bassist (who also plays a bit of flute); David Morris her drummer, plus she gets help from LaDonna Brewer-Capps on backing vocals, Tim Atwood on piano, Barry Wayne on congas and backup vocals, and David Russell on fiddle and mandolin. Forgive me if I left out anybody. I plead guilty by reason of I got caught up in the music, which was put together start to finish at Gene Breeden Recording Studios in (where else?) Nashville, Tennessee. Oh, and it’s not all gospel music, some, in fact most of it is good ol’ country with a religious message – what are the odds? FRESH NEW SONGS #1 Fromm’s All-Star Music indie Fresh indeed. Jaunty even. Instrumentals on keyboards and strings, well, organ and guitar … sort of reminds me of Tony Nardi. I have no contact information.
BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT COULD BE Brian Nahlen Indie This 6 song recording captures the musical energy of Brian Nahlen. An excellent songsmith, he fortifies his tunes with light instrumentation and extremely pleasant vocals. “Nation of One” stands out as a mind-bending fully produced band. Nick Devlin, Lisa Doss, Jason Hale, Larry Mann, George Mitchell, Erin Murphy Martinez, and Stephen Winter all join Nahlen to form a delightful and rocking band. “Better Than I Thought It Could Be”, the title song of the ep, only makes one hope to find more Brian Nahlen music as soon as possible. Recorded by Jason Tedford at Wolfman Studios, this recording places these six tunes on my disc machine often these days. Based in Little Rock, Brian performs often at clubs around town. STEPPING INTO TIME Georgie Bonds th 8 Train This is the first album I’ve heard funded by Kickstarter (as far as I know). It’s Philadelphia blues, kind of slow jam, beginning with a nice version of the traditional “St James Infirmary” then moving through a few originals and ending with a John Lee Hooker tune. Neil Taylor, who wrote or co-wrote many of the songs here, is a fine guitarist and the whole rhythm section is nice and tight. Kenny Githens or James White on bass, Buddy Cleveland on harmonica, Walter Runge or Joey Stout on keys, and Russ Joel or Andy Haley on drums give great underpinning to the songs. Bonds sounds a bit like Lou Rawls, which is not a bad thing. He can be contacted at georgie@georgiebonds. com or try www.georgiebonds.com for additional data. STAND STRONG Layne Smith indie Gospel, oh yes and oh my, it’s original songs written by the singer and

31st International Blues Challenge Lives up to its name: A Real Contest ---David Hughes The 31st International Blues Challenge is in the books. The ‘largest gathering of blues musicians in the world’ was held in venues on and around Beale Street in Memphis, January 20-24. Almost 250 acts participated in the 2015 edition of the IBC in the solo/duo, band and youth categories. More than 35 states and 15 countries were represented in the line-up including acts from Croatia, the Phillippines, Canada, France, Israel and Italy. The IBC is produced each year by the Blues Foundation (www.blues.org). Acts competing in the IBC play two nights of quarter finals, being judged each evening by three different judge. Judges for the IBC are former IBC winners, performers, producers, journalists, radio personalities and other music industry professionals. Acts are selected randomly and placed in venues on and around Beale Street, usually 9 to 10 acts per venue. After the quarter final round scores are tallied, four acts from each venue move on to the semi-finals. One act is selected from each of the band venues to move on to the finals while two acts from each solo/duo venue are chosen to move on. The finals are held in The Orpheum Theater with a total of eight acts in each category. There are a number activities that happen during the IBC. Several of showcases have popped over the years to highlight acts from regions of the country, from around the world and from talent agencies looking to connect their artists to festivals and promoters. Among the showcases are the Galaxie Agency, Blind Raccoon, Canadian, Pacific Northwest and Women in Blues showcases. There are workshops on funding projects, promotions and other music business related topics. The Keeping the Blues Alive awards are also held during the IBC. A number of open jams are held nightly in venues around Beale Street after the competition ends. Friday afternoon is reserved for the Youth Showcase, started in 2007. The Youth Showcase is set up

to help prepare young musicians for future competition and to give them a place to spotlight their talents. Thirty youth acts from across the US and around the world participated in the Youth Showcase in 2015. A special highlight to this year’s IBC was the release of the book Blues on Beale Street: Documenting the International Blues Challenge. The book was put together by photographers and writers Jenn Ocken and Greg “Slim Lively” Johnson. It documents the last ten years of the IBC throught pictures and stories from participants, volunteers and fans. It’s a real behindthe-scenes look at the IBC and captures the essence of the competition. Ocken and Johnson made a special gift of this book to each of the kids who participated in the Youth Showcase. The IBC Finals are held in the majestic Orpheum Theater.A number of awards are presented during the finals. Acts can submit their self-produced CD’s for consideration in the Best Self Produced CD competition. This year’s winner is the Altered 5 Blues band from the Grafton Blues Society (Milwaukee) for the efforts on ‘Cryin’ Mercy’. Other honors are reserved for the participants in the semi-finals and finals. The award for the best harmonica player receives the Lee Oskar Harmonica Award which includes a set of Lee Oskar harmonicas. The 2015 winner was Nico Wayne Toussaint from France. Gibson Guitars and Category 5 Amps provide the prize package for the Best Guitar player. Noah Wotherspoon from the Dayton (Ohio) Blues Society picked up the hardware this year for his scorching guitar work. The award was presented by former IBC and Best Guitar winner, Sean Carney, also from Ohio. In the solo/ duo competition, Ben Rice, representing the Ashland Blues Society, picked up a St. Blues cigar box guitar as the Best Guitarist in the solo/duo finals. Picking up the solo/duo title for 2015 was Randy McQuay, representing the Cape Fear Blues Society. McQuay delivered a comedic set of original tunes during
the finals, engaging the audience with his self-effacing humor, masterful lyrics and tight guitar playing. Second place went to Brian Keith Wallen from the Dayton (Ohio) Blues Society. The prize package for the solo/duo champ includes $2500 cash, a plaque and gigs at several festivals. The winner of the band competition was Eddie Cotton, representing the Vicksburg Blues Society. 2015 marked the second consecutive year the IBC winner has come from the Vicksburg society. For his efforts Cotton and company received a plaque, $3000 cash, a feature ad in Blues Festival Guide and several festival gigs including the King Biscuit, Legendary Rhytm and Blues Cruise, Heritage Blues Festival, Hot Springs Blues Festival and many more. Second Place went to the Noah Wotherspoon Band from the Dayton (Ohio) Blues Society while Nico Wayner Toussaint’s Mighty Quartet, Southern California Blues Society, took third place honors. Arkansas was well represented in the 2015 competition with five of the six blues societies in the state committing acts to the competition. Amanda Rey and the West Street Blues Band and Buddy Shute represented the Ozark Blues Society of Northwest Arkansas. The Buffalo River Blues Society sent Eagle Claw & the Mighty Talons and 2 Blue to the competition. Representing the Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Society was the Eric Matthews Band and Matt Dodd. The Spa City Blues Society and the Arkansas River Blues Society sent acts in both the band and solo/duo competitions as well as sending acts to the Youth Showcase. Representing the Spa City Blues Society were the John Calvin Brewer Band, Jackie B and Me and the Spa City Youngbloods. For the Arkansas River Blues Society, the Kim Griffin Band, The Crime and the Akeem Kemp Band held court on Beale Street during the IBC. The Spa City Blues Society was one of only three blues organizations in the competition to send acts to the semi-finals in both categories. The Crime also made the semi-finals for the Arkansas River Blues Society. For more information on the International Blues Challenge go to www.blues.org. The 2016 IBC is set for January 26-30. ---DH

Hot Springs Gumbo & Crawfish Festival ---David Hughes The Spa City Blues Society is pleased to announce the upcoming Hot Springs Gumbo & Crawfish Festival. The festival is a fundraiser for the non-profit organizations’ many civic activities. The society is dedicated to “Keeping the Blues Alive” through education and performance events. Learn more about SCBS at spacityblues. org. The festival will held on Saturday, April 18th, in Historic Downtown Hot Springs at Hill Wheatley Plaza, and will include a gumbo cook off, crawfish boil, and dance music. A small admission price will get one in the gate, to sample gumbo from top gumbo teams from around the state. Generous cash prizes and a gaudy trophy will be awarded to those deemed most worthy by a panel of unimpeachable judges. And because the SCBS appreciates the opinion of attendees, there will also be a prize for the gumbo selected as the people’s favorite. Those attending the festival will be able to purchase a flat of boiled crawfish and sides, as well as beverages. Gates will open at 2:00pm. Prizes will be awarded at 5:30, and the fun ends at 6:00. Festival coordinator and SCBS board member, Tracy Barrett, says the festival is a replacement for the Blues Society’s annual lobster dinner. She said the big crustaceans got to be too expensive, so they opted for a festival involved their smaller cousins. For more details go to hsgumbofest.com.
Springfest 2015 set for Northwest Arkansas ---Jessica Ellis Ok, let me begin by just saying that I am SUPER excited for SpringFest this year. It has got to be the absolute most fun packed into one day! There is not only amazing music and I will go into that in a moment but there is the 5K run, local arts, crafts, bed races, and so very much more. It is for a wonderful cause and all the proceeds go to Habitat For Humanity. I can say from first-hand knowledge that the people that organize this do so strictly on a volunteer basis and put their blood, sweat, and tears into it. They work tirelessly to make it the success that it is. We owe them a huge thank you for the fact that we get to enjoy such a great fun time because of their hardwork. There are of course several stages for you to find music at. First, at the Jose’s Streetside Stage music is set to begin at 8 am on April 19, 2015. Their lineup begins with The Jinn’s, Bottle Rocket, Hypnotion, Blacklisted, Witch Sister, Atomic High 5, Galaxy Tour Guides, and Groovement. I am super excited to catch these shows. Groovement has become one of my favorite local bands to seeand I try to catch them any chance I can. I recommend you do the same and get there early so you can see these other great bands too. It is great lineup. Next, you have the Bruce D. Walker Memorial Stage and music is set to begin there at 10 am. Their lineup begins with School Of Rock, my good friends in Aisle 24, Arkansas Groundscore, Crazy Neighbor, Homeschool Dropouts, Smokey & The Mirror, and Vintage Pistol. To say I am excited is an understatement. This year a new stage has been added for your musical pleasure. It is called the Satellite Stage and music will also begin at 10 am there as well. Their lineup has me thrilled. You have Fett’s Foley, Trey O’Dell, Ozark Mountain Choir, The Hillraisers, Voxana, and Woody and Sunshine. Voxana and Woody and Sunshine have put on absolutely amazing shows every time I have seen them. I can not wait to catch all this live local musical talent at SpringFest. We are blessed to live in a community with such talent, skill, art, and beauty. So please come on out to SpringFest and hang out with me. Support local art and music and a great cause. I hope to see you there.
Cutty Rye
---Sondra Goode Fayetteville has a dynamic and growing music scene, and bands like Fayetteville’s own Cutty Rye are growing as well. This multi-talented four piece band of “bluegrass aficionados” has decided to up the ante by adding local monster Isayah Warford to it’s folds. Known by many for his free flowing creation “Isayah’s Allstars” and his work with bands such as Andy Frasco and the UN and The Blues Brothers Revue, Isayah will be making a departure from his electric roots in favor of a blistering acoustic style as he pools his talents with some of the best pickers in the area. Isayah joins an already stout lineup, which includes last year’s addition of Dave Gesualdo, who is making his own departure from electric to upright bass. Dave is a recurring member of Isayah’s Allstars and he and Isayah thrive off each other’s energy and skill. Banjo extraordinaire Adams Collins, master mandolin player Warren Dietzel, and local songwriting talent Chooch Meisenbacher round out the regional touring band. Cutty Rye is poised to take 2015 by storm…

Left Of Center
---Jessica Ellis I am not sure if you are familiar with Left of a Center but, if not, you need to be. You need to run to their next show, buy their cd, watch YouTube videos, and get to know these amazing boys’ music. They put on a great show. They pull you into the music with engaging rhythms and charismatic personalities and carefully crafted lyrics and melodies. You drift away in the music, which is something we all need to do, from time to time. For two years now I have attended nearly every one of their shows. To say I am a fan is quite an understatement. Their renditions of old classics have a way of reaching into my soul and speaking to it in a way that only real music and real muscians can. Their music feels like home to me. It’s an intense yet, comfortable possession of me as a whole. It resonates deeply in my heart because it is the music I grew up on. It brings back wonderful childhood memories for me and it’s almost as if they paint these beautiful portraits with their music. L.O.C. as they are commonly referred to are made up of the phenomenal Jesse Dean, who radiates 70s style and undeniable charm. He can play pretty much any musical instrument that he chooses to touch. Then you have the absolutely amazingly talented Vince Turner on bass and vocals. Next up is Kevin Carl Bonner on drums and from time to time you get a musical treat when he surprises you with his own off the hook vocals. This trio is by far one of my favorite groups in NWA. I am always excited to hear and see them. Their music is engaging, fun, and they not only cover songs from days gone by but their orginal pieces are beautiful and have a style and flare all their own. They embody heart and soul. Their down to earth soulful music seems to come from deep places inside that we have all known and felt and are humbled by. Some of my favorite of their original songs are “Pond Water Spigot,” “Unforgettable Experience,” and “Little Things”.... I must admit that I have become more than a fan. They are truly treasured friends of mine and I encourage you all to go see them. You will not be disappointed. They will be part of your favorite play list and some of your dearest friends because that’s just the kind of people they are. You not only need to know their music, you need to know them. So find them on YouTube, Facebook, Reverbnation, etc... or better yet in person. You can thank me later. Media Contact: Jessica Ellis, jessellis2115@gmail.com
I hate to keep harping on this but...I am asked at least 3 or 4 times per week: “What is the most common cause of damage to stringed instruments?” I usually pose the question back to see just what IS the perception. I get a number of guesses: Broken necks or headstocks… No… Cracks… Nope Electronic Failures… Not really… It’s String-Related damage! The one thing that all stringed instruments have in common is… of course… strings. I’ve seen many instruments in my shop and, as you might imagine, the severity of damage or distress varies greatly... But, by far, the most common culprit is… the use or abuse of strings. String Age Many folks are under the impression that the age of the strings are “incidental” to the health of their instrument. I have been told, many times, “I just though you changed strings only if they break”. The fact is… any stringed instrument can be damaged just by leaving the strings on too long. We all know that strings stretch when they are installed on an instrument. There is that, sometimes annoying, “honeymoon” period when you have to tune your instrument between EVERY song. Then comes the “sweet” time when the strings have reach a nominal elasticity point… usually around 3 to 5 hours of playing time. This is when you can go several songs without having to tune too much. What many musicians DON’T know is that there is a MAXIMUM point of elasticity (for steel stringed instruments - around 4 – 6 weeks after installation) when the string effectively stops stretching. I say “effectively” because one of the interesting things about metallurgy is that all metal will keep stretching until it breaks… but for instrument strings, the stretching slows to a point that turning the tuning machine begins to add more tension than is released through string stretching. This causes the instrument to undergo tremendous stress. The neck begins to bow… the bridge begins to lift… the tuners begin to lean… the saddle will chip… and… (no laughing)… the stress can cause crushed nuts… Ouch! Lets talk about the damage caused starting with the headstock and working our way down. Headache When extreme pressure is applied to the Tuning machine shaft, it can begin to lean. This can exert enough pressure on the surrounding wood as to cause fractures. If the wood is dry enough, the headstock can actually split. Crushed nuts? The nut is one of two guides that keep the strings in place as they are stretched down the length of the neck. In recent years the nut has been designed to be one of the two intonation points. It can be made from a variety of materials: Bone, Tusq (man made bone-like substance) and plastic. As the string pressure increases beyond the instrument’s designed, from whatever material the nut was made, begins to crack and chip. Sticking your Neck out The neck is especially vulnerable because of the thinning of wood at the nut. Over the years, builders have begun to slim-down neck profiles on many models of instruments. The reason for this is unclear. Perhaps manufacturer are trying to capture a younger (smaller-handed) market… or ,possibly, they are trying to save money on materials… maybe someone just input the wrong data into the CNC machine that cuts the neck profiles… but whatever the reason, many instrument necks are becoming more susceptible to breakage. String tension applies a continuing force to assist in the occasional shock to the instrument… just enough to find andy flaw in the wood and break the neck. The neck will inevitably bow under the stress of older strings. The unyielding force placed on an instrument, that is predominantly made of wood, can succumb to the pressure and if left for months or even years, the wood can become “formed”… so much so as to be permanently bowed… sometimes a truss rod adjustment cannot correct the issue. The Body of Evidence An acoustic instrument, as you might imagine, is more susceptible to the forces of string tension. The top can begin to bow and crack. I have seen the neck heel of several types of instruments actually pull away from the body. The bridge is one of the most vulnerable points. The bridge on an acoustic guitar, for example, is attached with glue. Some manufacturers add a small bolts to re-enforce the bond. If an adhesive is the only form of attachment, string tension is the most common cause of release of the bridge. Solid body instrument are not immune to string stress either. Tremolo mechanisms can be a saving grace but stop-tailed instruments can suffer cracking as well as other unpleasant effects. I have seen severe cases of solid body guitars actually bowing from old strings… of course ALL of these were exposed to extreme temperatures and humidity. The solution The easiest solution to the afore mentioned maladies… Change your strings! Even if you do not strum the instrument… even once… Change your strings at least once per quarter... for most instruments. I know what you’re thinking… there are exceptions… basses can go 6 months… Nylon string instruments can go up to a year… the point is: Change your strings. You can save yourself a lot of headache and heartache in the long run. ---BK
THE SAGA OF BOYD MUSIC CENTER: EPISODE 10 (CONCLUSION OF SERIES) “WHY DID BOYD MUSIC CENTER GO OUT OF BUSINESS?” On July 7, 2000, after some 38 plus years of serving our music community, my wife Donnie and I swept the empty floors, turned off the lights and locked the doors of Boyd Music for the final time. There are still many of you who do not yet understand why we closed. In this closing chapter of my series of columns on the history of Boyd Music Center, I will answer your questions. We didn’t want to close our doors. Despite the mail order catalogs and then the beginnings of E-commerce, our loyal customers had kept us in business for over 38 years, since March of 1962. Many thousands of musicians learned to play in our teaching studios. There are still perhaps thousands of working musicians and hobbyists playing guitars, basses, drums and even amplifiers they bought from us. (We still service many of those instruments at Bryon Knight’s Little Rock Frets.) But God in His wisdom, had other plans. My landlords for 36 of those years, the family who built the building, put it up for sale in 1996. I didn’t buy the building because I didn’t have the money and didn’t want to go further in debt. Instead, the church behind us bought the building and continued to lease it to me for 3 years. In late 1999 they informed us we needed to vacate the building at the end of our lease, in the Spring of 2000. We saw this as our first answer to our prayers. This left us with 3 choices. 1. Sell the business totally to another owner (if possible, without a location or a lease,) 2. Move the business to another location, which would very expensive and risky, or 3. Have a “going-out-of-business” sale. Donnie and I did not have the wisdom to make that decision alone, so we asked God for His guidance. In a day or two I got a letter from a company in Denver, the G. A. Wright Company. They specialize in conducting sales for businesses, including going out of business sales. We saw this as a possible answer to our prayers so I called the company. They sent their agent to confer with me. I told him, above all, I didn’t want my customers to be mistreated in any way. After looking over our business, our inventory and our records, he met with us at a nearby hotel the next morning. He said, “We can help you sell out to the bare walls in 10 weeks, and nobody will get hurt.” Our response was, “That’s a mighty big promise.” It included sending their agent to work with me every day during the sale, handling our advertising throughout, and advising me on a daily basis. So we signed the agreement and set the opening date. I’ll never forget how painful it was for Donnie and me to announce to our associates at our monthly staff meeting, that our going-out-of-business sale would begin in April. Some of our concerns were: where would they go to work? Some of them had worked for us for over 20 years. You can always recognize the hand of God in your plans when you see things happening that you didn’t even imagine or consider. The owner and manager of Sigler Music of Fort Smith came to visit me to say they were accelerating their plan to open a store in Little Rock, and asked if they could interview my associates and hire them when we closed. Thank You, God! Later they bought my yellow page contract so they would have my 4 telephone numbers, and my list of 9,000 qualified friends of Boyd Music. Thank You again, God! Later still, they gave me a job in their store and I happily worked for them for the 7 years they operated in Little Rock. Thank You again, God! The G. A. Wright agent was a man in his 70s who had already conducted 22 sales for them. He had all the answers. He worked shoulder-to-shoulder with us during that very busy 10 weeks, which ran closer to 90 days. We became good friends and still enjoy our friendship by e-mail. Thank You, again, God! On the opening day of our sale, at 9 a.m., there were almost a hundred customers lined up at the front door. We formed 3 check-out lanes. Our sales that day were more than we usually had in an entire month. Thank You again, God! Thanks to the weekly newsletter they mailed, that continued throughout the weeks of the sale. We gave away a television, a stereo system and many other valuable prizes to the customers who came in most frequently. We did sell out to the bare walls, and Sigler Music bought the walls! (The slatboard display panels and other items) and another customer bought all the huge guitar rack woods. So, if you’re stuck with a tough decision, just remember; God’s plan for us was much more delightful than any plan we could have made for ourselves. But we had to be ready to accept absolutely and totally, whatever plans He had in store for us. ---BB

Jacksonville Guitar Center Now Forty Years Old ---Story and photos by Steve Evans I was working at Solid Sound guitar shop in 1974 when the owner decided to move his store to Colorado and close the Jacksonville location. I was 18 years old at the time. My Dad suggested that I not go through with my plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas and instead open a guitar store to fill the void for a guitar shop here in Jacksonville. With Dad’s help, I opened Jacksonville Guitar Center in January of 1975, at 521 Dupree Drive in the Mini Center. My Dad made a terrific sign to go up on the roof. By measuring a Gibson Les Paul and enlarging the proportions by 400%, he built a giant 4’ X 13’ guitar. He cut out small strips of aluminum and nailed them in place to replicate the frets and inlays, and he used baby food jars for the four control knobs. He painted the inside of the jars gold and screwed them onto the caps which he had nailed to the guitar. He made the pickups and bridge from wood, and used plastic covered wire cables for the strings. I was really surprised how great it turned out. It took a few years to repay my Dad for a $7,000.00 loan for the initial cost of merchandise, but as business picked up, the inventory grew. Before long we had outgrown the 850 square foot building on Dupree Drive, so I bought some land just off Main Street and started making plans for a new building. On March 28, 1986, we made the move to our new building (and current location) at 1105 Burman Drive. It is four times larger than the original location and is just the right size. In the layout, I had drawn-in an area for displaying my vintage guitar collection, and this became known as the Guitar Museum. The museum has many rare and unusual guitars, several of which have been photographed for guitar history books. When people come from out of state to visit Jacksonville Guitar Center, it’s usually to see the guitars in the museum. Another point of interest is our band photo collection adorning the walls. Since the beginning I have been asking customers to bring in an 8 X 10 photo of their band which I frame and hang on the wall. This led to a huge collection in itself. All these years we have continued doing business as usual and stayed with what we enjoy and know best - “guitars.” We have a large selection of guitars for sale, usually around 350, and when we stock up for the Christmas season our inventory can exceed 500 guitars. We also carry drum sets and a good selection of PA equipment. We offer guitar lessons by Steve Hudelson, who is a professional guitarist well known in this area. Our knowledgeable sales staff includes Bobby Appleby and Bob Tanner, who have worked here for an amazing 22 years, and Bruce Maddox has been helping out on Saturdays for the past ten years. I think we all enjoy working here, because it’s a fun place to be.

An army of guitars waiting for you to take them to battle...
---David Hughes I’ve had a lot of people ask me through the years about my involvement in the music world. How’d you get involved? Why do you do it? Do you play anything? I’ve been involved in music in some form or fashion for a while, either going to concerts, writing articles and interviews, booking, promoting and any other number of things related to the biz. The short answer as to where my musical motivation comes from is pretty easy. My love of music came from my parents. Growing up, there was always music playing in our house. Whether it was a 6:00 a.m. wake up moan of ‘Your Cheatin’ Heart” from Hank Williams, Sr., or the jumping bass beat of Elvis Presley singing “Don’t Be Cruel” on a rainy afternoon while we were cleaning house, there was always music playing. Dad was a country and western fan so there were lots of old vinyl albums around from the likes of Hank, Sr., Johnny Cash, Ray Price, Jim Ed Brown, Jim Reeves, Porter Wagoner and many, many more. Being children of the 50’s, mom and dad both played a lot of what I call “at the hop” songs. It wasn’t unusual to hear things like “Charlie Brown”, “RockinRobin”, “Rock Around the Clock”, “Come Go With Me”, and tons of other songs playing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Mom was a big Elvis fan and she handed it down to me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my folks had given me a wonderful gift. The gift of music. As I’ve grown older and I look back from time to time over the wake of my living I can see music woven all through my travels and endeavors. I am an avid collector of vinyl records. I am an avid collector of music in general in any medium. I write about music. I go to as many music shows as time and money will allow. And my musical tastes vary widely, from blues to country, classical to metal, and most things in between. All this stems from growing up in a home filled with family, love and music. I can recall my dad waking us up for school at the unholy hour of 6:00 a.m. with, what I thought at the time, was a bag =full of screeching ass cats. Turns out it was Hank, Sr., or possibly Bob Will and his Texas Playboys. And that music that so grated on my nerves back then is now some of my favorite. Dad often worked a second job on the weekends so we kids were at home with mom. Most weekends were spent doing laundry and cleaning. Mom would crank up a little Elvis or maybe Buddy Holly on the stereo while we whittled away at the day. One of my favorite memories was mom teaching us kids how to do The Stroll down our long hallway at home. As I grew older my musical tastes began to change. I branched out to the popular music my friends were listening to. I was a child of the 70’s so I was listening to Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, ZZ Top and Foreigner, among others. I was also turning on to Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, Ronnie Millsap and a few other country folks. I managed to discover the Jackson 5, The O’Jays, Parliament, The Gap Band and The Sugarhill Gang during those years. I believe the reason my tastes were so diverse was because my folk’s tastes were diverse. Along with the country and old time rock and roll drifting through the house, on any given day we might hear Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Petula Clark, a motion picture soundtrack filled with classical music or the Glenn Miller Band. We watched the Porter Wagoner Show, Hee Haw, Donny and Marie and The Dean Martin Show on television. I’m tellin’ you, music was everywhere in our house growing up! Oddly enough, no one in my family played/plays an instrument. My brother tried, as did I, to learn to play guitar. I still attempt the guitar and mandolin but, sadly, I remain a frustrated musician. Even without instrument in hand, I developed a keen interest in music and a deep appreciation for the people who could play it. I loved going to live music shows. Still do. I still go out of my way to find old vinyl record shops. I can spend hours, literally, flipping through stacks of music looking for those nuggets that need to be in my collection. My interest in music has taken me places that I never dreamed I would go as a child. I’ve had the good fortune to see a lot of places with my work but the most interesting stops have been because of the music. Because of my interest in music I’ve been given the opportunity to write for this magazine (Thanks Peter!). I’ve interviewed
Gordon Lightfoot, Bobby Rush and Ray Manzarek among others. I’ve got to hang out with Zac Harmon, JP Soars, Victor Wainwright, Bobby Rush, John Nemeth, Nick Moss and many, many others. I’m able to call a good many of the musicians I’ve run across friend. I have delved deep into SXSW, handled artists at the Blues Music Awards and emceed a venue during the International Blues Challenge. I’ve managed to have four different radio shows in my life to date. My colleagues often joke with me when we travel because, inevitably, regardless of the city we are in, I will find live music somewhere and will, more often than not, run into someone I know. Many times I’ve put musicians up for the night and fed them as they were traveling through. My home is nicknamed the Hughes Hotel for Lost Souls and Wayward Musicians for a reason. Having the gift of music given to me early on in life from my folks helped pave the way for me to be able to wrap myself in the music, make lasting friendships and pass the love for a good tune on to my kids and my friends.
So, now you know where it came from. Now you know, for the most part, why I behave the way I do. I can’t imagine a day going by without music in it. Much like I can’t imagine a day going by without my parents in it. They are the reason my ties to music are so strong. I don’t know any other way. For that gift, among many, I thank them wholeheartedly. I don’t know what my world would’ve looked like if music had not been a part of it. I’m sure I’d have survived it but, oh, how gray and boring it would have been. Much love and thanks to my parent, Lola and Charles Hughes, for their love of music and their willingness to share it with me. (By the way, my mom’s name was my introduction to The Kinks!) As I write this column, my mom is in her final days of life, losing the good fight with breast cancer. As she lays in her bed, there is a CD player on the night stand with music pouring out of it. The sounds and words are comforting to her in her last days. To the end music continues to play a strong, vital role, providing comfort and whatever solace may remain for a tired body and weary soul. Count your blessings good people. Don’t take lightly the things that your parents or other relatives or friends have bestowed upon you. Think back to why you love the things you do and make it a point to thank the person who showed you the way. Hold your people tight and always tell them you love them. I’m sure, somewhere in the background, there will be music playing. Peace y’all. ---DH

An anti-semite is drinking in a bar. He notices a Jew sitting at a table nearby and doesn‘t like it. “Bartender! A round of the good stuff for everyone except him!“ Everyone except the Jewish man receives a glass of premium scotch. The anti-semite looks over at the Jew with a smug grin. The Jew smiles back. The anti-semite loses his satisfied expression. “Bartender! Give everyone a drink of your finest, plus an appetizer!“ He looks directly at the Jew and adds, “Everyone except the Jew.“ The Jewish man looks at the anti-semite, and smiles again. Furious, the anti-semite says to the bartender, “Is that Jew just stupid or pretending to be?“ “Oh no, sir, he‘s the owner.“
Fishing
Four guys have been going to the same fishing trip for many years. Two days before the group is to leave, Ron‘s wife puts her foot down and tells him he isn‘t going. Ron‘s mates are very upset that he can‘t go, but what can they do. Two days later the three mates get to the camping site only to find Ron sitting there with a tent set up, firewood gathered, and dinner cooking on the fire. “Shit Ron, how long you been here? How did you talk your missus into letting you go?“ “Well, I‘ve been here since last night. After dinner at home yesterday evening, I was sitting in my chair and my wife came up behind me and put her hands over my eyes and said, ‘Guess who?‘ “I pulled her hands off, and she was wearing sexy brand new lingerie. She said she had been reading Fifty Shades of Grey and she had a devilish look in her eyes!!! She took my hand and led me to our bedroom. The room had candles and rose petals all over. On the bed she had handcuffs, and ropes! She told me to tie her up and cuff her to the bed, so I did. And then she said, ‘Do whatever you want.‘ So . . . . here I am!“ An old man walks into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender notices the guy‘s head is the size of a cue ball. “I got to ask, sir,“ says the bartender. “What happened?“ The old guy sighs and tells him, “My ship was torpedoed by the Germans in WWII. A mermaid rescued me and promised to grant me three wishes. For my first wish, I asked to return to the States. My second wish was to have all the money I would ever need. Finally, my third wish was to have sex with the mermaid.“ “That doesn‘t sound too bad,“ says the bartender. “Then what happened?“ “Well,“ sighs the man, “mermaids can‘t have sex, so I asked her if I could just have a little head...“ Three women were sitting in a bar, (a brunette, red head, and a blonde) they were all pregnant. The brunette says, “I know what I‘m going to have.“ The other to asked how. She replied, “well I was on top when I conceived so I will have a boy“. The red head said, “If that is true then I will have a girl because I was on the bottom when I conceived. The blonde starts crying and orders another shot and starts screaming, “PUPPIES, PUPPIES!“... There‘s this drunk standing out on the street corner, and a cop passes by, and says, “What do you think you‘re doing?“ The drunk says, “I heard the world goes around every 24 hours, and I‘m waiting on my house. Won‘t be long now, there goes my neighbor…“ An Irish man walks into a bar. The bartender looks at him and notices he has a steering wheel stuck down the front of his pants. “Hey,“ he says, “What‘s with the steering wheel down your pants?“ “Ach,“ says the Irish man, “it‘s drivin‘ me nuts…“ Two drunks had just gotten thrown out of the bar and are walking down the street when they come across this dog, sitting on the curb, licking his balls. They stand there watching and after a while one of them says, “ I sure wish I could do that!“ The other one looks at him and says, “Well, I think I‘d pet him first…” A guy named Benny is sitting in a bar mouthing off that he knows everybody. So his buddy bets $10 the next person to walk in the bar didn‘t know him. Somebody walks in the bar and says “Hey Benny what‘s up?“ so the guy then bets him $100 he doesn‘t know the first person they see outside walking down the

street. So they go outside and see some coming up to the bar and says “Hey Benny how are things going?“ Flustered the guy bets him $500 he doesn‘t know the President. So they drive up to the white house and the security guard says “Benny you know you can‘t just show up here like this.“ Then a limo pulls up with the president in it and he rolls down the window and says “Hey Benny how have you been?“ So then he bets him $1000 he doesn‘t know the Pope. So they take a plane down to Rome and he says “Ok now watch up there on that balcony I‘m gonna come out there with the Pope.“ So he goes up there and looks down to see his friend pass out. He goes down there and says “Are you that surprised that I know the Pope?“ he says “No somebody walked behind me and said who‘s that guy up there with Benny?“ ***** McQuillan walked into a bar and ordered martini after martini, each time removing the olives and placing them in a jar. When the jar was filled with olives and all the drinks consumed, the Irishman started to leave. “S‘cuse me,“ said a customer, who was puzzled over what McQuillan had done. “What was that all about?“ “Nothing,“ said the Irishman, “my wife just sent me out for a jar of olives…“ **** Pat and Mike had been drinking buddies and friends for years. After having a few drinks in a bar, Mike said to Pat “We have been friends for years and years and if I should die before you do would you do me a favor? Get the best bottle of Irish whiskey you can find and pour it over my grave.“ Pat replied, “I would be glad to do that for you my old friend. But would you mind if I filtered it through my kidneys first?“ **** Mary Clancy goes up to Father O‘Grady after his Sunday morning service and she‘s in tears. He says, “So what‘s bothering you, Mary, my dear?“ She says, “Oh, Father, I‘ve got terrible news. My husband passed away last night.“ The priest says, “Oh, Mary, that‘s terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?“ She says, “That he did, Father.“ The priest says, “What did he ask, Mary?“ She says, “He said, please Mary, put down that damn gun...“ ****** An old Irishman was asked, “At your ripe age, what would you prefer to get...Parkinson‘s or Alzheimer‘s?“ The Irishman answered, “Definitely Parkinson‘s...Better to spill half an ounce of whiskey than to forget where you keep the bottle…“ ***** A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street. “But officer,“ the man began, “I can explain.“ “Just be quiet,“ snapped the officer. “I‘m going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back.“ “But, officer, I just wanted to say,...“ “And I said to keep quiet! You‘re going to jail!“ A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, “Lucky for you that the chief‘s at his daughter‘s wedding. He‘ll be in a good mood when he gets back.“ “Don‘t count on it,“ answered the fellow in the cell. “I‘m the groom...” **** An elderly woman goes to the doctor and asks his help to revive her husband‘s sex drive. “What about trying Viagra?“ asks the doctor. “Not a chance” says Mrs. Murphy. “He won‘t even take an aspirin for a headache.“ “No problem,“ replies the doctor. “Drop it into his coffee, he won‘t even taste it. Try it and come back in a week to let me know how you got on.“ A week later Mrs. Murphy returns to the doctor and he inquires as to how things went. “Oh it was terrible, just terrible doctor.“ “What happened?“ asks the doctor. “Well I did as you advised and slipped it in his coffee. The effect was immediate. He jumped straight up, swept the cutlery off the table, at the same time ripping my clothes off and then proceeded to make wild passionate love to me on the tabletop. It was terrible!” “What was terrible?“ said the doctor, “Was the sex not good?“ “Oh no doctor, the sex was the best I‘ve had in 25 years...but I‘ll never be able to show my face in McDonald‘s again…” ****

Best of Burger (1949 - 1998)
LEO (July 23-August 22) If at first you don’t succeed, try again...but not too hard. Leos just don’t have much luck where winning is concerned. The smart Leo just accepts failure and saves his or her energy…
St. Gypsy Woman
ARIES (March 21-April 19) For the first time in your life it looks like things are going to take a turn for the better. That business deal is about to close and there’s a love-interest in your life. Those nagging doubts remain, however, and you give in to the negatives. The deal goes sour and your romance fades and dies. God, you Aries are such wimps...
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) This ain’t your month and that’s no bull. Take my advice and pose as a Gemini at every opportunity…
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Nothing new here for you, pal. Life, love and the future are all gonna be just groovy. Don’t worry about a thang you good-lookin’ son-of-agun. Don’t you never die!!!
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Bad luck takes a turn for the worse...cut your losses and try to sleep as much as possible and avoid contact with all animate beings whenever possible. To associate with rocks in the wilderness may be your only solution…
In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards... ---Mark Twain 46

VIRGO (August 23-September 22) Your fate is determined by two signs this month: STOP and KEEP OFF THE GRASS. Heed both these warnings and prosper. Never attempt to solve complicated problems on your own, such as tying your shoelaces to buttoning your own pants. Seek help from superior intellects. That should include almost anyone except another Virgo…
AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18) Time and time again the slow-witted yet determined Aquarian tries to find his niche in society only to be bounced hither and yon...first a goat-herder in New Jersey, then a lumberjack on the Gobi Desert... One thing about the Aquarian, he never quits. I hear there’s work for a chicken plucker up north of Nome...
PISCES (February 19-March 20) Narcissus was a Pisces...so was Venus...but that don’t mean nothin’ ‘cause you ain’t pretty and nobody loves ya...
LIBRA (September 23-October 22) Cheer up, Libra...how can things get worse? Your hair’s falling out and your teeth are next. When you ain’t got nothin’ you got nothin’ left to lose. You’re sure to bottom out soon, so relax and enjoy your inevitable decline into oblivion…
SCORPIO (October 23-November 21) Are you guys still around? Jeez! I though y’all would’ve taken the hint long ago. But it’s not too late... © 1989 Nightflying Publications. All Rights Reserved. SAGITTARIUS (November 22-December 21) The ups and downs of that roller-coaster ride that is your life seems to suit the ever-adaptable Sagittarian, no matter that the downs outnumber the ups by ten to one. Just being known as “adaptable” is usually enuff for those born under the sign of the “ho-hum…”
CAPRICORN (December 22-January 19) Jesus was a Capricorn and so is my mother... I guess that’s about it. Who knows what happened to the rest of you?
