Dear friends,

here we are with another issue of Night&Day Magazine Winter Edition.

For the third consecutive year we are here in Miami during the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival to inform you about the previews of Ibiza and Formentera 2012. We will be at the Congress Hotel South Beach from March 15 to 25, where we will be with House Ibiza, a meeting point chosen by our friends from Ibiza where you can have fun at the pool parties and events while looking at the ocean. A complete program with our partners from Ibiza Global Radio, Welcome to Ibiza. On the cover of this issue you will find the talented Nina Kraviz, who will present her first CD, and Ritchie Hawtin who, after his successful Plastikman tour (his show at Amnesia in Ibiza was so incredible that we encored in Turin), will introduce our special about Berlin by interviewing the most important characters from the music scene in this city, from the creators of Tresor, the first techno club, to the legendary Watergate. Be careful because over the next few months we will be on tour at the best clubs to present this special issue and the Night&Day compilation.

aquí estamos de nuevo con la edición de invierno de Night&Day. Por tercer año consecutivo estamos aquí, en Miami, en el Winter Music Conference y el Ultra Music Festival, para informaros sobre los avances de la temporada 2012 en Ibiza y Formentera.

Nos vemos en el Congress Hotel South Beach del 15 al 25 de marzo, donde estaremos con Casa Ibiza, un punto de encuentro pensado por nuestros amigos ibicencos donde podréis divertiros en las fiestas en la piscina y en los eventos mientras contempláis el océano. En la portada de esta edición tenemos a un gran talento, Nina Kraviz, que presentará su primer disco, y a Ritchie Hawtin que, después de su exitosa gira de Plastikman (tan increíble que, después de ver su espectáculo en el Amnesia de Ibiza, repetimos en Turín), presentará el especial de Berlín con entrevistas a los personajes más importantes de la escena musical en esta ciudad, desde los creadores del Tresor, el primer club de techno, hasta el legendario Watergate. MAURO PELO LOCO Hi all, dear friends of N&D, how is your winter going?

This year I write from the beautiful and white (due to the snow) Italy, whereas a year ago I was on the beach in Miami... What a difference!

I am very happy to be in the snow that I love so much, although I have to admit that my experience in Miami was really positive and I feel some nostalgia for this wonderful city... I’m sure I’ll come back soon to spend more unforgettable moments of pleasure and work!

Miami is a great city where you can live very well, thanks to the sun, beaches, people (who play sports all the time), the South Beach nightlife, the extravagance and the freedom of people, the cultural and linguistic differences that are mixed in a mainly, but not exclusively Latin American fusion, as there are people from around the world who come and go and enjoy the splendour of this city with thousands of resources!

I would like to take this opportunity to greet all those people I met last year, many good friends and clients who have followed and helped me during my positive experience in Miami... Este año os escribo desde la bonita y blanca (por la nieve) Italia, mientras que hace un año estaba en la playa en Miami... ¡Vaya diferencia!

Estoy muy contento de estar en la nieve que tanto me apasiona, aunque tengo que reconocer que mi experiencia en Miami fue tan positiva que siento algo de nostalgia por esa espléndida ciudad... ¡Seguro que volveré pronto para pasar inolvidables momentos de placer y trabajo! Miami es fantástica, se vive muy bien en ella, gracias al sol, las playas, sus habitantes (que practican deporte a todas horas), la vida nocturna de South Beach, la extravagancia y la libertad de la gente, las diferencias culturales y lingüísticas que se mezclan en una fusión sobre todo latino-americana, pero no solo, ya que hay gente de todo el mundo que va y viene y ¡que disfruta del esplendor de esta ciudad con miles de recursos! JUNIOR NUÑEZ FERNANDEZ Where are you from? I was born in Asturias but my teeth came out in Madrid and I have been living in the Balearic for 17 years.

What’s your job? During the day I run a bar on the beach with “juicetheraphy” and cocktails, and at night I’m a familiar face that welcomes you at the door of clubs and restaurants.

Connection with the island The “total connection” came with my first job on the island, at Kumharas, some years ago.

An unreachable erotic dream Unreachable??? (Laughs) An obsession Music.

Do o you use any social network? More talking in bars and less chatting on portals.

Do you do something to save our planet? Poor planet, it’s dying and those who can do something just look at it. Here in Ibiza we act locally, with small things: we plant trees, recycle and respect nature.

What do you like the most about your job? Being in direct contact with the good people living and coming to Ibiza.

¿De dónde eres? Nacido en Asturias, pero los dientes me salieron en Madrid y llevo 17 años en las Baleares. ¿A qué te dedicas? De día llevo un chiringuito en la playa de zumoterapia y cócteles, y por la noche soy una cara familiar que te recibe en las puertas de algunos locales.

Conexión con la isla La “conexión total” llegó con mi primer trabajo en la isla, Kumharas, hace ya unos años.

Un sueño erótico inalcanzable ¿¿Inalcanzable?? (Risas) Una obsesión La música. ¿Utilizas alguna red social? Más hablar en los bares y menos chatear en los portales. ¿Haces algo para cuidar nuestro planeta? Pobrecito, está agonizando y los que pueden hacer algo solo miran. Aquí en Ibiza se actúa localmente con pequeñas cosas: planta de arboles, reciclaje y respeto por la naturaleza. ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de tu trabajo?

ROBIN EBINGER Where are you originally from? Hi there, my name is Robin Ebinger from Heidelberg close to Mannheim.

Tell us briefly about the history of Time Warp: when and where was it crreated? How has it developed? It all started in the early days in an old warehouse in Ludwigshafen, a city close to Mannheim. The line up of the first event saw people like Speedy J, Robert Armani, Laurent Garnier... In 1995 Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Josh Wink made their Time Warp debuts and we moved the event to the Maimarkthalle in Mannheim, our homebase. In the following years, the event grew in audience size and international awareness. Furthermore, Time Warp has been held in several other cities in Germany and abroad such as Vienna and Prague. Since 2008 Holland is our regular yearly party abroad and in 2011 Italy joined in. Today, Time Warp is a very international brand that represents an authentic event experience and a place to be inspired and meet people from all over the world. For a special atmosphere where time and space intermingle. A great picture consisting of music, people from all over the world, innovative technology to enhance the music experience and enrich visual impulses and a trustworthy place where artists deliver extraordinary performances in close proximity to the audience.

How was the first Time Warp in Italy last October? Amazing! The crowd, the vibe and the atmosphere were unbelievable. The Italian audience was so euphoric about Time Warp. We were simply overwhelmed by excitement of the people and also by the fact that the first ever Time Warp in Italy was sold out only in its first year. Mille grazie Italia!

Relationship with Ibiza 2011 was my first year in Ibiza, but I knew this island would give me a lot!

You started playing when you were very young, did you discover your passion thanks to your family or other people? I was 13 when I started, however, I’ve always had music in my soul as the biggest gift I could have received. I have to thank my father Alfonso because since childhood he made me listen to a lot of intense melodies!

At the beginning which music genrre did you prefer? How has your music evolved? Pure house and funky house. Over the years, after listening to many different genres, I have begun to push the boundaries and have worked to create the right energy for the dance floor.

Musical evolution is like human evolution - we still have so much to learn!

In 2011 you played at various festivals and clubss on the white island, such as Pleiadians and La Plage; it has been a very intense summer. What are your plans for the 2012 season? 2011 has been a very good year, but according to the prophecy 2012 will be much better! In addition, I will collaborate with different clubs, for example, Vanilla Ninja in Moscow, Minù in Rome and Mazoom in Desenzano. The project for 2012 is called Descending Order.

Relación con Ibiza El 2011 ha sido mi primer año en Ibiza, ¡aunque ya sabía que esta isla me daría mucho!

Empezaste a tocar y pinchar muy joven, ¿descubriste tu pasió ón en familia o gracias a otras personas? Tenía 13 años cuando empecé, sin embargo, siempre he tenido la música en el alma como el dono más grande que se pueda recibir. ¡Tengo que agradecer a mi padre Alfonso que desde pequeño me hizo escuchar muchas melodías intensas! ¿Qué género musical te apasionaba al principio? ¿Cómo ha ido evolucionando tu música? House pura y funky house. Con los años, después de escuchar muchos géneros distintos, he empezado a romper los esquemas y a trabajar para crear esa energía adecuada para el dancefloor.

La evolución musical es como la evolución humana, ¡hay tanto que aprender todavía!

En 2011 has pinchado en varias fiestas y clubs de la isla blancca, como Pleiadians y La Plage, ha sido un verano muy intenso. ¿Qué proyectos tienes para la temporad da 2012? El 2011 ha sido un muy buen año, ¡pero según la profecía el 2012 será mucho mejor! Además, colaboraré con clubs como, por ejemplo, Vanilla Ninja de Moscú, Mimù de Roma e Mazoom de Desenzano. SIS Where are you from? I am from Germany, the son of a Turkish family.

When did you start in the music business? It was about 2005 with my first release.

How did you become a producer? After starting to play as a DJ I got in touch with Reason and soon I had my first tracks.

What kind of music does COCOLINO promote? Of course music close to my sound but presented in a different way. I am not looking at new artists just if I meet someone who has the same way of thinking about music, life and all these things.

Next releases The next release is Cristian Viviano, one of the most talented artists I’ve met during my time in the music scene. His first release will be ‘Fatima’s bed’ and the ‘Less is more’ B-side. Both of the tracks are totally different. ‘Fatima’s bed’ is kind of message with chords inside which recalls 80s love. There is also a version where I played a solo for the track and we’ll release both of them.

‘Less is more’ is a typical house dance floor breaker with a straight pumpy baseline and pianos played by Cristian himself. In addition, I have some other releases on others labels and I’m working on my second album, we’ll see which label I release it with!

Tell us your plans for 2012 In 2012 I will try to work more on my label and concentrate on some artists.

We are also starting Cocolino’s nights in different countries, a collection of t-shirts, and my new project coming soon - chill out music with live instruments.

¿De dónde eres? Soy de Alemania, hijo de una familia turca. ¿Cuándo empezaste en el negocio de la música? En 2005 con mi primer lanzamiento. ¿Cómo te convertiste en producto or? Después de empezar a pinchar como DJ, me puse en contacto con Reason y pronto tuve mis primeras canciones. ¿Qué tipo de música promueve COCOLINO? Sin duda, la música que se acerca a mi sonido, pero presentada de forma diferente. No estoy buscando artistas nuevos, solo si encuentro a alguien que tiene la misma forma de pensar sobre la vida, la música y todas estas cosas.

Próximos lanzamientos La próxima publicación es Cristian Viviano, uno de los artistas con más talento que he conocido durante mi carrera en la escena musical. Su primer lanzamiento será ‘Fatima’s bed’ y ‘Less is more’ en la cara B. Las dos pistas son totalmente diferentes. ‘Fatima’s bed’ es una especie de mensaje con acordes dentro que recuerda el amor de los años 80. También hay una versión en la que toco un solo del brano y vamos a publicar las dos. ‘Less is more’ es una típica house dance que rompe las pistas con una línea de bajo muy directa y piano tocado por Cristian mismo.

Además, tengo más publicaciones en otras etiquetas y estoy trabajando en mi segundo disco, ¡vamos a ver con qué etiqueta lo publico!

CURLY Where are you from? I’m from Mannheim in Germany.

Where do you currently live? I still live here in Mannheim and during the summer I normally spend a few months in Ibiza.

When did you start DJing? I started DJing at the age of sixteen and had my first proper gig at 17, in a club called Vibration.

Was it exciting to play at Time Warp in Mannheim, your hometown? I’ve played a couple of times for Time Warp already and it’s always one of the highlights of the year for me, as I see all my DJ friends from all over the world in my hometown, along with my friends from Mannheim. Time Warp is also one of the best festivals we have in Europe.

Tell us about your next release My main project at the moment is my ‘Between The Lines’ album, which will be released in March on my label Cecille Records. I worked with several different singers and musicians on this and it’s very special to me..

Name one artist who deeply influen nced your career DJ SNEAK. A young DJ you like Steffen Deux.

Your favourite club Difficult question. I have to say that Space Ibiza, Electric Pickle in Miami, Ego in Hamburg, Watergate in Berlin and 2.35:1 in Stockholm are my some of my faves.

Your plans for 2012 Well, first of all I’m gonna do my Between The Lines album tour with the album release in March, along with a new EP. After all that I’m really looking forward to the Ibiza 2012 season. We have some big changes at Kehakuma this year! ¿De dónde eres? Soy de Mannheim, Alemania. ¿Dónde vives actualmente? Time Warp es también uno de los mejores festivales que tenemos en Europa.

Berlin fascinates with its different faces and mutability. Hardly any city in the world has been affected so much by change as Berlin has, and therefore it has gained more historical significance than any other city in the past 750 years.

“Berlin is addictive,” say many who’ve tried it.

The differences are more extreme, conflicts more tangible and problems bigger than elsewhere. But even the contradictions that Berlin creates are an important part of its appeal. The rapid change of influences and trends and the jumble of styles are what make the city so attractive, especially for young people from around the world. Your labels are located in Berlin. Why Berlin? Minus is co-located between Windsor and Berlin. We chose to keep one base in Windsor because it is our starting point, our home-base, but it was very important in the early 2000s to also have a European base in Berlin to help us feel more connected to the European scene. Berlin, in my opinion, is the centre of electronic music in Europe, perhaps the world. Many people will probably be upset with that remark, but this comment goes beyond just the clubs, it’s about the whole infrastructure of our scene that makes it possible. In Berlin you find booking agencies, lighting/sound companies, clubs, software companies, hardware companies, promotion companies, graphic designers, record stores, digital stores, distribution companies and all the other things that our scene needs to survive. Sure you find some of these in other cities, but no other city has so many people and companies dedicated to the sound and scene of electronic music.

What do you think is the impulse for many DJs, well known or just beginning, to move to Berlin? Whatt does it offer? As I said, there’s so many people working in the different areas of the scene in Berlin, this offers lots of potential for collaboration and inspiration. Of course, the heart of our scene is the music, and Berlin (as everyone knows) does offer many, many clubs and venues to hear, dance, and enjoy electronic music (every day of the week… nearly non-stop). The city also is relatively inexpensive when compared to other European capitals and has a very open attitude to alternative lifestyles. Berlin welcomes people who think/live differently!

Do you as a famous and established DJ and Pproducer support music-newbies in Berlin? We support any inspired individual who would like to help make their mark in the world of electronic music. Whether it’s a young Berliner working at Minus, or setting up a company that we will work with, or a new artist, DJ or producer. However, we are not only interested in supporting Berlin based talent. We have our eyes and ears open to the world for new ideas and individuals. Although I said Berlin is the centre of electronic music in Europe that does not mean that it is only about Berlin. Electronic music is a sound, scene and industry that spreads itself over the entire world, through languages and cultures and is a creative force that celebrates the idea of the Global Village.

What is your favourite place to play in Berlin? I love Weekend in the Winter when the nights are long and when you have a chance for a snowy-morning sunrise. I love Watergate for those longer after-hours-like sessions downstairs on the “waterfloor”… I like Panorama Bar for just hanging at the Bar having a drink and watching the people dance and smile.

Berlin Music Days, a unique club festival connecting creatives and drawing thousands of clubbers, musicians, label professionals and cultural entrepreneurs to Germany’s capital.

Born from the underground and governed by the free spirit of the metropolis, the Berlin Music Days, aka BerMuDa, is an attraction like no other. In 2011 more than 70.000 visitors joined to celebrate at 40 different locations together with 100 Djs, live performances and a variety of daytime workshops and events. BerMuDa with its open concept is initiated by the renowed Club Watergate.

The 4th edition of BerMuDa will take place from the 31st of October until the 3rd of November with an abundant program from parties to label nights, showcases to workshops, panels and presentations, exhibitions and fashion events – representing all aspects of electronic music and culture. The grand finale will be the FLY BerMuDa at its historic location Berlin Tempelhof airport.

TRESOR, TRESOR RECORDS LABEL MANAGEMENT, PULLPROXY AGENCY You are among the pioneers of the techno scene. How and where did it all begin?

At the end of 80s in Berlin: at the same time as in Detroit, also in West and East Berlin musicians, producers, DJ were working on new sounds in electronic music. Then the wall came down, the unique atmosphere in Berlin was the spark not only for a whole generation of youngsters and their music. The dance floor of Tresor Club (opened in 1991) was one of the first places in the city where East really met West. Tresor was the first club in Germany to bring Detroit acts to Europe.

And local Tekkno (back in the days Techno with 2 kk) DJs met the international acts with the same state of mind.

Electronic music was the soundtrack of the “new Berlin”.

Tresor became Berll in’s first Technoclub and an important step for the development of electronic music.

Do you think th hat this is why Berlin is an important place? Definitely. Without Tresor, the sound of the club, the label and the development of the club scene in Berlin would have been different.

Later the club was facing several problems before it was closed down in 2005. What was the reason? The main problem was the lack of safety in the area the old Tresor club was located. The city plans for the urban development of Potsdamer Platz demanded changes.

The same is happening now with the Spree area.

Culture, subculture, bars, clubs have to move for the new concepts of the city developers. So the old Tresor was blasted for a new insurance building. Until then the club had secured permission to stay for a limited period of time, without an exact date for the closing day.

Did you go on with the re-opened Tresor? What are you working on now? I continue working project wise for the label, but I became partner at the Pullproxy agency: management, booking and publicity. I wanted to concentrate more on artist development and club cooperations worldwide.

Eres una de las pioneras de la escena techno. ¿Cómo y dónde empezó todo?

A finales de los 80 en Berlín: simultáneamente a lo que sucedía en Detroit, en Berlín oeste y Berlín este también había músicos, productores y DJ que trabajaban en nuevos sonidos de música electrónica. Luego cayó el

muro y en el ambiente de Berlín se respiraba una sensación única de liberación, que no se limitaba únicamente a toda la generación de jóvenes y su música. La pista de baile del Tresor Club (inaugurado en 1991) fue uno de los primeros lugares de la ciudad donde realmente se reunieron este y oeste. Tresor, el primer club que se instauró en Alemania, trajo las actuaciones de Detroit a Europa. En el local Tekkno (en esos días Techno era con 2 k) los DJ se encontraron con que las actuaciones de otros países tenían las mismas ideas. La música electrónica fue la banda sonora del “nuevo Berlín”.

Sin Tresor, el sonido del club, su etiqueta y el desarrollo del panorama de los clubs de Berlín hubiera sido diferente.

Más tarde, el club se enfrentó a varios problemas antes de cerrar en 2005. ¿Cuál fue la razón n? El principal problema era la inseguridad sobre qué pasaría con la zona donde estaba ubicada el Tresor. Los planes de la ciudad para el desarrollo urbano de la plaza Potsdamer Platz exigieron algunos cambios. Lo mismo está pasando ahora con la zona de Spree. Cultura, subcultura, bares y discotecas tienen que moverse según los nuevos conceptos ideados por los responsables del desarrollo de la ciudad. Así, el antiguo Tresor se vio desplazado por un nuevo edificio de seguros. Hasta entonces el club tenía permiso para funcionar intermitentemente, sin una fecha exacta de cierre. ¿Seguiste con la reapertura del Tresor? ¿A qué te dedicas ahora?

Sigo trabajando como consultora para la etiqueta, pero me hice socia de la agencia Pullproxy: gestión, reserva y publicidad. Quería concentrarme más en la promoción de artistas y colaboraciones entre clubes de todo el mundo.

TRESOR CLUB How did you find the location for Tresor Club?

Actually my partner found it by incident. When the wall came down there was an incredible atmosphere in Berlin. There was hole in the wall for two new small traffic lanes between East and West Berlin. This street was always busy and cars moved slowly. When our friend’s (Achim Kohlberger) car stopped again because of the heavy traffic – exactly at that moment my other partner in the car –Johny Stieler – exclaimed: This can’t be! At that moment Achim looked to his left and asked: What about this barrack here on the left side? They stopped. And this lonely barrack became the Tresor club. We discovered the vault in the basement days later.

What was your vision and engine to try to establiish the first Technoclub in Berlin?: I already knew how to make a record and I quickly learnt how to sell drinks. We did not ask. We just did it. Actually we decided to create a platform where the music we liked could be played. We came with limited experience of a record label (Interfisch Record) but we realized that the combination of a record label and a club are perfect. The club generates money for our upcoming releases and necessary artist advances.

What did you feel when you had to close Tresor in 2005?

I was sad. The city did not realize that Tresor had started a wide network activity worldwide without mobiles and e-mail. Tresor brought people together who later formed an image of young Berlin and @ Tresor the creative industries began a great career. Berlin today is the city young people want to live in and want to go to experience this burning power station.

You re-opened the Tresor2 in 2007. Is it still the same or have things changed?

Sure things have changed but the spirit is the same. Young kids love this place to break through Berlin in three words No money, sexy, artistic freedom and open-minded international youth.

¿Cómo encontraste la ubicación para el Club Tresor?

En realidad, fui mi socio quien lo encontró por casualidad. Cuando cayó el muro, había un ambiente increíble en Berlín. Había un hueco en el muro para dos nuevas vías de tráfico pequeñas entre el este y el oeste.

Esta calle siempre estaba atestada de coches y avanzaban muy despacio. Cuando el coche de mi amigo (Achim Kohlberger) se paró otra vez por culpa del tráfico, exactamente en ese momento, el otro socio que estaba en el coche, Johny Stieler, exclamó: _No puede ser. En ese momento, Achim miró hacia la izquierda y le preguntó: _¿Qué es esta barraca de aquí a la izquierda? Se pararon. Y esa barraca abandonada se convirtió en el Tresor. Unos días más tarde descubrimos una bóveda en el sótano. ¿Cuál era tu proyecto y tu motivación para estaablecer el primer club de techno de Berlín?

Yo ya sabía cómo hacer un disco y aprendí rápido a vender bebidas. No preguntamos. Simplemente lo hicimos. De hecho, decidimos crear una plataforma en la que poníamos la música que nos gustaba. Teníamos algo de experiencia con un sello discográfico (interfisch Record), pero nos dimos cuenta de que la combinación de un sello discográfico y un club es perfecta. El club genera dinero para nuestros próximos lanzamientos y adelantos necesarios para los artistas. ¿Qué sentiste cuando tuviste que cerrar el Tresor en 20 005?

Estaba triste. La ciudad no se dio cuenta de que el Tresor empezó una amplia red de actividad en todo el mundo sin estar cerca y sin correo electrónico. El Tresor reunió a la gente que más tarde formó la joven Berlín y en el Tresor las industrias creativas empezaron una gran carrera... Berlín es hoy la ciudad donde los jóvenes quieren vivir y donde quieren ir a experimentar en esta central eléctrica que quema.

Volviste a abrir el Tresor2 en 2007. ¿Sigue siendo el mismo o han cambiado las cosas?

Las cosas han cambiado, pero el espíritu es el mismo. A los chicos jóvenes les encanta este lugar para “romper”.

Name Jan Kühn aka DJ Fresh Meat What is the Berlin Mitte Institut (BMI) and how was it created? Born as a radio program in October 2006, we started with electronic music, promoting myself as DJ, talking about the scene and about fun things. With the Internet as an increasingly powerful platform, my partner Matthias Kandel and I started to change the concept. Instead of presenting only new DJs and new tracks, we gave more depth to the content, we invited booking agencies to talk about their structure, how they work, and so on. In exchange they could promote their artists. We had live programs, for example, Florian Meindl making music, teaching DJ software and giving advice, we also held live parties and interviewed workers. Little by little we changed towards content and music programs. Now I’m working professionally on the structures of the techno scene: I’m writing a thesis on “Working in the techno scene in Berlin”.

What role does the Berlin Mitte Institut play?

We try to mediate between fun and seriousness.

We are part of the scene. We reflect and try to study issues and links to different sources such as academic texts, articles from students and participation in conferences.

You also talk about themes of social criticism, do you think you have a didactic function? Of course, although we do it in a free way. We provide knowledge and share experiences to keep people informed, especially with young people abaut the conditions af actions among its members. We shed light on this, help maintain control, make decisions and react appropriately.

Berlin is the basis and springboard to start and build music careers. Why does Berlin cause so much attraction and love? It’s the alternative infrastructure in Berlin with its many clubs, agencies, labels, artists, etc. With its own inbuilt non-commercial economy, quite closed but

Jan at the same time global. It is characterized by an intense passion for music and party, a great desire for freedom and individual action. Techno music is not just a product based on supply and demand, with big budgets. Quite the contrary: the debate is focused on keeping a low profile commercial style and organizers act outside the interests of the big industry. Berlin became an oasis, a special place and a Mecca for those who believe in the power of individuality.

What do you want for the future of Berlin? For politicians to stop trying to market the city and its creative scene, and for Berlin to remain a place with its own musical soul, that everyone will begin to understand and accept it as it is.

Nació como programa de radio en octubre de 2006, empezamos con música electrónica, promocionándome a mí como DJ, hablando de la escena y tratando los contenidos de manera divertida. Con Internet como plataforma cada vez más potente, mi socio Matthias Kandel y yo empezamos a cambiar el concepto. ¿Qué función tiene el Berlin Mitte Institut?

Intentamos mediar entre diversión y seriedad.

Somos parte de la escena, la reflejamos y tratamos de estudiar los vínculos con temas y fuentes distintos como textos académicos, artículos de estudiantes y participando en congresos.

También tratáis temas de crítica social, ¿crees que tenéis una función didáctica? Sin duda, aunque lo hacemos de forma libre. Queremos facilitar conocimientos y compartir experiencias para mantener informada a la gente, y sobre todo a los jovenes, sobre las condiciones de la escena entre los afiliados.

Queremos arrojar luz sobre ello, ayudar a mantener el control, tomar decisiones y reaccionar adecuadamente.

Es la infraestructura alternativa de Berlín con sus numerosos clubs, agencias, sellos, artistas, etc. con la que ha construido su propia economía, poco comercial, bastante cerrada pero al mismo tiempo globalizada. Está caracterizada por una intensa afición para la música y la fiesta, un gran deseo de libertad y acción individual.La música techno no es sólo un producto que se basa en la oferta y la demanda, con grandes presupuestos. Todo lo contrario: el debate se centra en mantener un estilo no comercial y los organizadores en actuar fuera de los intereses de la gran industria. Berlín se convirtió en un oasis, un lugar especial y una Meca para los que creen en el poder de la individualidad. ¿Qué es lo que deseas para el futuro de Berlín?

Que la política deje de intentar comercializar la ciudad y sus escenas creativas, que Berlín siga siendo un lugar con un espíritu musical propio, que todo el mundo empiece a entenderlo y aceptarlo tal y como es.

hack You’re from Echterdingen (S-Germany), how did you end up in Berlin? (laughing) yes exactly. I didn’t do well in school and Stuttgart always had been barren to me. In 1982 when I was 17, I quit school and moved to Berlin as it was making a name for itself through the squatting movement. This really attracted me, and as people living in Berlin couldn’t be recruited to the military, it was clear as daylight: Berlin here I come!

What makes Berlin so attractive? Clearly the uniqueness. Due to the Second World War Berlin suddenly became an island divided into East (communism) and West (capitalism). This left a vacuum of development behind that for all the army refugees – who were anti-nuclear and involved in the house occupying movement - made it possible to take over empty buildings and derelict sites without worrying and running about after the money for daily life, and instead trying and developing new concepts of living. The capitalization passed by Berlin first, but no one had a clue that the collapse of the socialist East was imminent.

Unfortunately the capitalization of the property market displaces exactly what Berlin made so attractive!

(Risas) Es así. No me iba bien en la escuela y Stuttgart siempre había sido estéril para mí. En 1982, cuando tenía 17 años, dejé la escuela y me trasladé a Berlín, que se estaba haciendo famoso por el movimiento okupa. Esto fue lo que me atrajo, y porque las personas que vivían en Berlín no podían ser reclutadas en el ejército, estaba claro como el agua: ¡Berlín, allá voy! ¿Qué hace de Berlín una ciudad tan atractiva? Es evidente que su singularidad.

Debido a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Berlín pronto se convirtió en una isla dividida entre el Este (el comunismo) y el Oeste (el capitalismo). Esto dejó un vacío de desarrollo que permitió que todos los refugiados del ejército, que eran contrarios a la energía nuclear y participaban en el movimiento de ocupación de viviendas, se hicieran con los edificios vacíos y sitios abandonados sin tener que preocuparse ni correr detrás del dinero para poder vivir, y así pudieron experimentar y desarrollar nuevas maneras de vivir. La capitalización pasó primero por Berlín, pero nadie tenía la menor idea de que el colapso del Este socialista era inminente. Por desgracia, la capitalización del mercado inmobiliario ¡reemplaza exactamente lo que hizo tan atractivo a Berlín!

Why is Berlin is so liberal with the electronic music scene? Aha, is it so? Well, I think that this is due to the past and the fact that we don’t have strong social pressure and are more tolerate of each other, as everybody has a chance to define himself. After the fall of the Berlin Wall the old East German forces no longer felt responsible, whereas the new West wasn’t yet responsible, so we could do almost anything we wanted. Politics at some point recognized that Berlin with its mix of old & new creates a strong attraction, which was adopted by politicians and served from then on as a marketing tool to push it forward among the front runners (wherever this front might be!). Therefore its liberal attitude - without tourism Berlin could barely pay its bills.

What led to the establishment of Watergate? What was your inspiration? We’ve usually had our own events and parties in other venues and clubs. At some point we just wanted to do our own thing, completely, from door, music, lights up to the toilets in order to be independent and create our own style.

If you compare the scene nowadays with back then, what are the differences? Why did people celebratee in basements and nowadays on rooftops? A good comparison! Berlin Techno started about 20 years ago, you can be part of a natural progress. One starts without money, a lot of naivety and ideas in a basement and slowly works his way up to the attic! It’s all very natural in Berlin, most of today’s clubs were part of it back then, too. In recent times entrepreneurs from outside the city try to get some of that cake too, but most fail….

What do you wish for Berlin and its future? I wish for nothing, it’s not Christmas! You have to do something that changes the way you think, unfortunately you’re not alone with your ideas! Future will bring normalization! It will be harder to distinguish it from other cities, when rents rise and the city capitalizes, many artists will then head to a place where you don’t have to plow 24/7 to pay your fucking rent and enjoy life a little bit.

¿Por qué Berlín es tan liberal con la escena de la música electrónica? ¿Ah sí? Bueno, creo que se debe al pasado y al hecho de que no tenemos una presión social fuerte y a que somos más tolerantes, ya que todo el mundo tiene aquí la oportunidad de definirse a sí mismo. Después de la caída del Muro de Berlín, la antigua policía de la Alemania del Este ya no se sentía responsable del otro lado, mientras que el nuevo Oeste no era responsable todavía de nada, por lo que podíamos hacer casi lo que queríamos.

La política reconoció en algún momento que Berlín, con su mezcla de viejo y nuevo, ejercía una fuerte atracción, hecho que fue aprovechado por los políticos, que lo utilizaron desde entonces como herramienta de marketing para impulsarla como una de las ciudades líderes (¡si se podían llamar líderes!). De ahí su actitud liberal, sin el turismo Berlín apenas podría pagar sus cuentas. ¿Qué llevó a la creación de Watergate? ¿En qué te inspiraste? Hemos celebrado nuestros propios eventos y fiestas en otros lugares y clubes. En un momento dado decidimos que solo queríamos hacer algo nuestro, completamente nuestro, con puertas, luces, música e incluso con baños para ser independientes y crear nuestro propio estilo. ¿Qué quieres de Berlín y de su futuro? No deseo nada, ¡no estamos en Navidad! Tienes que hacer algo que cambie tu forma de pensar. Desafortunadamente, ¡no estás solo con tus ideas! ¡El futuro traerá la normalidad! Será más difícil distinguirla de otras ciudades: cuando el alquiler sube y la ciudad se vuelve tan comercial, muchos artistas más tarde o temprano se van a un lugar en el que no tengan que trabajar todos los días de la semana de sol a sol para pagar un alquiler de mierda y sí poder disfrutar un poco de la vida.

It always reinvents itself and has character. Nobody needs to hide or is accountable to anyone. This is what makes Berlin so attractive to outgoing people, and it offers a stage for acting out and implementing ideals and visions.

How important is Berlin to the electronic music scene?

Especially for musicians, Berlin offers an extensive and financeable freedom to max oneself out. Particularly for artists, the community is widespread and allows space for interpretation and inspiration. On one hand, it is essential that some of the greatest and most important labels have moved to Berlin. On the other hand, it goes without saying that Berlin is also an important milestone in the history of electronic music. Compared to other German cities, we are lucky with Berlin as it still handles so permissively the habits of people partying, and it allows us to enjoy, dance, and experience excessively without temporal boundaries.

Juan, you are half Ibizenco-half Germaan. What do Berlin and Ibiza have in common? Berlin and Ibiza are distinct microcosms. Berlin, as well as Ibiza, isolates itself from conventional obligations, which creates a special, magic level...

Vives y trabajas en Berlín. ¿Qué es lo que la hace tan especial? ¿Qué ofrece a los músicos? Berlín trata muy bien a los artistas y es una ciudad diversa. Siempre se reinventa y además tiene carácter. Nadie tiene que esconderse o sentirse responsable ante nadie. Esto es lo que hace Berlín tan atractiva para las personas que están saliendo y ofrece un escenario para la actuación y la aplicación de ideales y proyectos. ¿Cómo es de importante Berlín para la escena musical electrónica? Sobre todo para los músicos, Berlín ofrece una libertad amplia y que puede ser financiada para llegar al tope. Especialmente para los artistas, la comunidad es muy grande y proporciona espacio para la interpretación y la inspiración. Por un lado, es esencial que algunas de las etiquetas más grandes y más importantes se hayan trasladado a Berlín. Por otro lado, es necesario decir que Berlín es también un hito importante en la historia de la música electrónica. HAWTIN Where

are you from? Born in Banbury, England where I lived until I was 9 years old and then moved with my family to Windsor, Ontario Canada, a small city on the Canadian/American border with the US city of Detroit only 15 minutes away.

How and when did you start DJing and what was the engine? In the mid 1980s I became very interested in the early break-dancing/electro music, along with New Wave (New Order, Erasure, Skinny Puppy) that was very popular in the Windsor/Detroit area. After a few years of buying lots of records my friends kept asking me to play a set for them so we rented a small nightclub so that we could hold our own ‘dance party’… that was around 1987. Shortly afterwards I got my first real DJ job downtown Detroit at the Shelter Club. At that time all the underground clubs in Detroit, the Music Institute (with Derrick May), the Majestic Theatre (with Blake Baxter) and the Shelter all played a combination of Industrial, New Wave and early house music and Detroit techno.

Poco tiempo después tuve mi primer trabajo verdadero como DJ en el centro de Detroit en el Shelter Club. You have established your own two labels, m-nus and plus8. What is the difference? Plus 8 Records was first set up in 1990 with my then partner John Acquaviva. The purpose of Plus 8 was to give John and I a platform to release forward thinking electronic dance music in the spirit of Detroit techno. Plus 8 had huge success in those early years of techno with influential releases by Cybersonik, FUSE, Daniel Bell, Kenny Larkin and Speedy J and continues today specializing in pure techno from the likes of Paco Osuna, Uto Karem, Alberto Pascual, Luigi Madonna and so forth.

Minus was set up in 1998 to explore a more minimalist sound with the motto “Minimize to Maximize” and, as with Plus 8, has been key to developing many new artists who are now quite well known. Minus artists like Magda, Marc Houle, Jon Gaiser, Ambivalent, Barem, Hobo are all important players in the world of electronic music today!

With your pseu u donym Plastikman you define yourself. How important is that for you? My star sign is Gemini, the twins, so I’ve always felt it important to be able to explore both sides of my personality. Over the years Richie Hawtin has come to be the name and face that most people recognize through the hundreds of gigs I do yearly around the world. Plastikman is my alter-ego which sits somewhat being the extroverted Hawtin, deeper, darker and more introspective, Plastikman allows me to explore my own inner feelings and ideas without having to worry about the expectations of the public.

M-nus has become one of the most famous music labels in the world. Are you proud of what you have achieved and how you have inflluenced the music culture and inspired a lot of DJs? I’m proud to have seen the world of electronic music grow up over the past 20 years, starting from a few dozen inspired DJ’s and labels to a scene of thousands.

From the beginning I hoped to entertain, inspire and even educate people with my feelings and thoughts about electronic music and I still hold all of these ideas very close to my heart.

What do you want to achieve in the future, wh hat are you dreaming about? To continue to inspire, to move forward, and to help educate the next generation about the past so that we can all move into the future together.

Plastikman es mi alter-ego, quizás el Hawtin que es más extrovertido, más profundo, más oscuro y más introspectivo. INTERPRETAR A UN NACI Y SER CREIBLE = DISFRUTAR MATANDO Y NO SENTIRSE MAL The work of filmmaker Tania da Fonseca with her project “OUT OF OPTIONS”, set in 1933, gave me the opportunity to get into the skin of Adolf Eichmann who was directly responsible for the “final solution” (Jewish annihilation) and deportation to German concentration camps during World War II. Her script tells how a Jew (played by Javier Alba de Alba) invents a time machine and travels with it to 1933, the beginning of the Nazi sovereignty, adapting a historical character as Major Eichmann to the fiction of her script.

Una vez mi profesor Juan Carlos Corazza dijo: “La diferencia entre los locos y los actores es que nosotros tenemos billete de vuelta hacia la cordura”. Mi trabajo como actor siempre se ha centrado en papeles oscuros, antagonistas, psicopáticos, es decir siempre he tenido que interpretar al mal. Para hacerlo bien y ser creíble es imprescindible sentirse cómodo y disfrutar la realidad de la acción del personaje, buscar entre tus instintos más bajos y primarios sin asustarse por lograr llegar a ellos y sentir que lo estas disfrutando. Importante conocerse bien.

El trabajo de la directora de cine Tania da Fonseca con su proyecto “OUT OF OPTIONS”, rodaje ambientado en 1933, me ha dado la oportunidad de meterme en la piel de Adolf Eichmann que fue el responsable directo de la “solución final” (aniquilación judía) y de los transportes de deportados a los Campos de Concentración alemanes durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Su guion cuenta como un judío (interpretado por Javier Alba de Alba) inventa una máquina del tiempo y se traslada con ella a 1933 inicio de la soberanía nazi, adaptando un personaje histórico como el Mayor Eichmann a la ficción de su guion.

abbiamo un ospitone, una delle colonne portanti della Purple Records, il grande Alfred Azzetto, dj e producer italiano di tanti successi, uno per tutti Point of you con Db Boulevard.

Ciao Alfred, anche tu qui a Miami. Raccontaci innanzitutto la tua entrata dalla porta principale in Purple Records, etichetta di riferimento per la sua qualità musicale. Ho spedito un mio pezzo via mail a Jammie Lewis, che è il boss della Purple, e ho ricevuto la sua disponibilità immediata nel pubblicarlo. Da lì è iniziata una florida collaborazione che dura ormai da 5 anni.

Dacci qualche altro titolo... Il primo è stato Voyager, a seguire Follow up colors, un must ancora strasuonato dai più grandi DJ internazionali e dalle radio di tutto mondo. Un’altra fortunata release è stata con la grande voce house internazionale di Robin Hess con la quale è nato il singolo Near the ocean.

Raccontaci delle tue esperienze all’estero, sei tra i pochi DJ italiani che ancora stanno riscuoteendo successi nelle serate. All’estero mi trovo veramente a mio agio perché ho sempre seguito una linea house con nuove sonorità, mi piace sperimentare e uno dei miei segreti è quello di tener sempre pronto un disco house di quelli che hanno fatto la storia.

Alfred, prima di andare in scena dacci qualche news sulle tue nuove produzioni. Sto facendo vari remix per prestigiose etichette internazionali e poi sto preparando il mio nuovo singolo per l’estate con Hornbostel e la strepitosa voce di Lisa Millet.

Cuéntanos tus experiencias en el extranjero, eres uno de los pocos DJ italianos que todavía coseecha éxitos en sus fiestas. En el extranjero me siento muy cómodo, porque siempre he seguido una línea house incorporando nuevos sonidos, me gusta experimentar y uno de mis secretos es tener siempre a punto un disco house de los que han hecho historia.

Alfred, antes de salir a la escena, cuéntanos alguna novedad sobre tus producciones. Lo storico club di Formentera, meta degli hippy nei primi anni ’70 e successivamente frequentato da Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd e Velvet Underground, riaprirà i battenti sabato 26 maggio 2012.

Dopo il successo dello scorso anno, dove si è distinto sia nella scena techno e underground ospitando artisti del calibro di Dennis Ferrer, Tania Vulcano, Miss Kittin, Satoshi Tomiie, System of Survival oltre alla chiacchieratissima residenza di Cocoon il giovedì, sia nella scena dance e party a tema, in puro stile ibizenco.

La programmazione di quest’anno si avvarrà di alcuni dei nomi più hot del panorama mondiale: già confermati per Cocoon Sven Vath, Cassy, Loco Dice oltre ai resident Ilario Alicante, Dorian Paic ed i nomi più vicini al brand di Francoforte. Este histórico club de Formentera, destino de los hippies en los primeros años 70 y después frecuentado por Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd y Velvet Underground, volverá a abrir sus puertas el sábado 26 de mayo de 2012.

Después del éxito del año pasado, en que destacó tanto en el panorama techno y underground presentando a artistas de la talla de Dennis Ferrer, Tania Vulcano, Miss Kittin, Satoshi Tomiie y System of Survival, además de la residencia de Cocoon cada jueves (que tanto ha dado que hablar), como en la escena dance y en fiestas temáticas, al más puro estilo ibicenco.

La programación de este año verá algunos de los nombres más hot del panorama mundial: ya confirmados para Cocoon son Sven Vath, Cassy, Loco Dice, además de los residentes Ilario Alicante, Dorian Paic y las figuras más cercanas al brand de Frankfurt. THOMAS Di dove sei? Sono italiano di Treviso, una città vicino Venezia.

Quanti anni hai?

Ho raggiunto la veneranda età di 34 anni.

Di cosa ti occupi? Dallo scorso anno sono il responsabile della sezione di Formentera di Night&Day Magazine.

Quando sei venuto a Formentera per la priima volta?

La prima volta sono venuto nel 2008 quando ero in vacanza a Ibiza e ho fatto una gita di un giorno sull’isola, innamorandomene all’istante!

Cosa ti ha convinto a trasferirti a Formentera? La domanda giusta sarebbe cosa mi ha trattenuto dal non trasferirmi prima! Il bello di quest’isola è la qualità della vita. L’amministrazione è molto attenta all’ambiente e che questo sia rispettato il più possibile, pur mantenendo anche servizi mondani, come le famose feste in piazza che è facile incontrare durante tutta l’estate. Senza dimenticare che per una serata divertente puoi sempre recarti ad Es Pujols dove non mancano i locali.

Com’è stata la tua prima stagione sulll’isola? Molto suggestiva. Ogni giorno, pur essendo un’isola non propriamente grande, ho scoperto situazioni e ambienti nuovi, ognuno eccezionale.

Il tuo angolo d’isola preferito Trovo molto appagante stendermi a Es Calò di giorno e godermi il tramonto a Cala Saona.

Il ricordo più divertente dell’estate 2011 Quando per l’articolo sulle cove, chiedendo ad un contadino, io e la mia collaboratrice ci siamo ritrovati a percorrere per qualche ora un sentiero molto stretto che scendeva a strapiombo fino ad una spiaggia isolata molto bella.

Peccato che la cova alla fine non l’abbiamo trovata!

DORI ¿De dónde eres? Soy italiano, de Treviso, una ciudad cerca de Venecia. ¿Cuántos años tienes? He llegado a la venerada edad de 34 años. ¿En qué trabajas? Desde el año pasado soy responsable de la sección de Formentera de Night&Day Magazine. ¿Cuá ándo llegaste a Formentera por primera vez? La primera vez fue en 2008, cuando estaba de vacaciones en Ibiza e hice una excursión de un día por la isla… ¡y me enamoré de ella! ¿Qué es lo que te convenció para mudarte a Formentera?? La pregunta sería más bien ¡por qué no me mudé antes! Lo bonito de esta isla es su calidad de vida. La Administración presta mucha atención al medio ambiente para que sea lo más respetado posible, aunque sigue manteniendo servicios más mundanos, como las famosas fiestas en las plazas que son tan fáciles de encontrar durante todo el verano. Sin olvidar, además, que para una noche de diversión siempre puedes ir a Es Pujols, donde abundan los locales. ¿Cómo fue tu primera temporada en la isla? Muy sugestiva. A pesar de que la isla no sea grande, cada día descubría situaciones y ambientes nuevos, todos increíbles.

Tu rincón favorito en la isla Encuentro muy satisfactorio tumbarme de día en Es Calò y disfrutar del atardecer en Cala Saona.

El recuerdo más d ivertido del verano 2011 Para redactar el artículo sobre las cuevas de Formentera, después de haber preguntado a un campesino, mi colaboradora y yo recorrimos durante unas horas un sendero muy estrecho que bajaba por un acantilado hasta una playa aislada muy bonita. ¡Lástima que la cueva al final no la encontramos!
